What an excellent restaurant! We stopped here on a road trip to Mt. Rushmore. The lady who works next door at the Rock Shop suggested we try it when we asked her what the best place to eat was! The burgers were cooked to perfection and come in a variety of options to satisfy both basic and artisanal burger palettes. We so got the Rhubarb bread pudding for dessert; it was superb. It was pretty affordable at only about $7 for a burger and a delicious side. I suggest the potato salad! Service was fast and friendly and the environment was quirky and homey.

Excellent pulled pork nachos -- an experience, for sure. Enjoyed the burger and fries, too. A good place, if you can get in. Tried the night before for dinner, but the wait was 1/2 hour! Lunch the next day was a bit easier.

Very good service when we walked in. And the place was packed!! Had to wait 5-10 minutes just because of our size of our group. Food was excellent ordered cheese curds and a Fat smitty buffalo burger. Forgot what the topping are go to their website to find out. Very good food, I will definitely go back there.

The best burger ever. We had a group of 8 that had just got back from riding our motorcycles all day and we walked in at 7:35. This was our 1st day here and we had no idea they closed at 7:30. The hostess and all the waitstaff were slammed busy and we figured we'd have to try elsewhere. But the hostess and waitstaff agreed to stay open late to accommodate us and a few others. 25 minutes later they call our names and we thanked them for getting us in. Turns out the hostess Christie is one of the co-owners and we had a very nice conversation with her about their business. The other owner is her husband Claude, who is also the chef there. I used to be a manager in the restaurant business. The people who do this type of work are on their feet all day, work hard in a hot and greasy environment, and deal with a lot of people who think they are a gift from god just by being there. So I know how much the extra effort they gave to us meant, with them now staying later away from their own personal lives with family and friends. So for customer service I give them an A+. Plus our waiter was a cool young dude who smiled and hustled the whole time we were there. He even chased a customer down the block who left their cell phone behind On to the food. One word..... AMAZING!!! I have never had a better burger in my life. I got the Fat Smitty and added roasted red pepper to it. The burger is fresh ground and you can pick up the mild saltiness to it in every bite. You also get a perfect blend of flavors from the thick cut bacon, garlic aioli, fried egg, etc. (Please don't ruin a great burger by adding ketchup or mustard). Fresh made burger and bun and all perfectly prepared. Talk about a burger orgasm in your mouth!!! Just incredible. I got the sweet potato fries which were equally as good. Thick cut and crinkle cut, crispy on the outside, hot and soft on the inside. Claude has got it going on in his kitchen!!! We were the last to leave and Claude came out of his kitchen looking very tired and beat, but smiling. We all gave him a round of applause. If you know good food then you have to eat here. I wish you had a place near me on the east coast. I will never ever have a burger as good as what we had here They also have some good locally crafted beers as well as the standard fare

My family and I stopped here for dinner after a visit to Crazy Horse. The menu is mostly all burgers, but they were amazing. There is a reason they were given the title "Best Burger in America" 2014. Plus, they have buffalo burgers. The prices were equally as awesome. Most of the burgers were priced at around $9 or less. I had the Iowan with buffalo meat... DELICIOUS! Highly recommend! However, they have odd hours and they fill up fast! Get there early, especially for dinner. You will more than likely have to wait. We waited about an hour to be seated, but it was more than worth it! Definitely worth the 5 star rating.

What an excellent recommendation from a local while visiting Jewel Cave National Park. She said it was the best place in Custer, and I'm so glad we made it in time before it closed (2PM). I loved the wide variety of burgers, including the Burger of the Week special (taco)! I ordered the special and the server recommended I try the black bean patty with it, and I was so happy I did. It was the best Mexican-flavored burger I've ever had! The burgers were delicious, perfectly sized (I actually finished mine!), and the service was fantastic. I'll definitely make a stop here again next time I make my way through South Dakota. And next time, I'll need to try their famous Hot Granny!

Burgers are some of the best I've had. I had the Hawaiian with teriyaki, green peppers, pepper jack cheese and pineapple. A delicious combination. Hubby had the Texan with the bison upgrade and he could barely finish his. Their German Chocolate cake is definitely a shareable size and is made there. Very tasty, but we had to eat that later as we were too full from the burgers. Would definitely go here again if ever in Custer. If you do go, be prepared for a bit of a wait. The place is small, but worth the 20 minutes we waited. The staff was friendly and the service was a bit slower than I am used to, but it was worth it in the end.

Best burgers ever! We were on vacay and stayed in the Custer area. I found this place on yelp and the car rental guy referred it too. We went here at lunch it was busy but we only waited about 5 minutes. I ordered the Texan and it was delicious fresh jalapenos, grilled onions with buffalo patty. My husband ordered the classics, as well as my son. We had the cheese curds for an appetizer, my kids are very picky eaters but they tried the cheese curds and loved it. Good food and excellent customer service!! Worth the money!

I'm back again! I couldn't wait. 1 year in the waiting and God did I miss this place. I'm not sure about the surrounding places, but this place hands down has my loyalty! Everything on the menu is great! The lines speak for themselves. I almost lost my mind when I showed up Monday morning and their old place had a new name. I had to ask one of the local vendors what ever happened to them. To my surprise they moved around the corner. Kept the old place and made it a taco place. That place was closed because it apparently rained so hard, fuel from the neighboring gas station spilled into their basement causing an odor and a unsafe place to operate. Wish I could have tried that place out. I'm sure it was great. Until next year, I hope you guys will be around for years to come. I look forward to buying a place to stay in Custer in the near future!

Best food ever. One star removed because of how slow it can be to get seated and served because they are SO popular.

  • LuLu S.

The food is soooooo good, probably the best meal we've had while we were staying in Custer! The waitress was so helpful with food ingredients and introduction, she is also very friendly:) highly recommend to go there for a fat smitty burger with buffalo meat!!

  • Dave B.

Unassuming place in total tourist town yet this is the best burger i've ever eaten. Anywhere. And I've had my share of burgers. The Iowan - third pound buffalo burger, melting Maytag bleu cheese, garlic aioli, bacon, carmelized onions, housemade bun. Also stellar tri-color baked beans, very good slaw, and heavenly peach cobbler a la mode. Nice folks providing great service. You wouldn't be in this town if you weren't able to handle tourists!

  • Laura M.

Delicious! And super busy, so make sure you get there promptly at 11am or a few minutes before! We all ordered different things and tasted each other's so I sampled a wide selection and liked each burger! I ordered the Hawaiian, it was the perfect blend of savory and sweet. The other two I liked best were the Greek goddess, and the hot granny. They were delicious! I'm tempted to go back before we leave town to try the fat Schmitty because it looked so good! We shared a s'mores brownie sundae and it was wonderful! Highly recommend! Delicious food!

  • Renee K.

Worth every second of the wait. I cannot believe that I, as a local, have not eaten here before now. Can't wait to bring the family! I had the chicken sandwich and side salad. How can this ordinary fare be so AMAZING!

  • Phil L.

Had the Old Granny Burger and it was great! It is a delicious blend of Cream Cheese, Jalapeño's, with a Sweet Sauce and topped off with Bacon.

  • Edwin S.

Showed up at 1645 and there was a long line outside...now I know why...the burgers were outstanding (I had the Fat Smitty)...the staff was also outstanding. We almost moved onto a different location due to the wait, but a local told us we'd regret it. Thank you!!!

  • Kristyn A.

We loved everything we ordered including the brownie Sunday and the kid friendliness of the place makes me as a parent want to high-five them. They even had special animal plates for the kids meals. We were here at the same time as the Sturgis motorcycle rally and were impressed with how well this little place handled large crowds. Do not skip the fries, they were awesome.

The HOT GRANNY! The best burger I have ever ate. This place is wonderful, can't wait to return

  • Mya A.

Excellent food, attentive waitress, quick service. Expect a wait time but very worth it!! I would highly recommend. The owner was working and asked us if everything was okay and if we needed anything. Could tell they wanted to make their customers happy.

The food was very good. I had baffalo burger with a a side of coleslaw. My burger was well cooked

  • Darren F.

There was a line to get in. We got number 5 thanks to a few family mishaps. Woohoo for that. The food was outstanding. We varied from buffalo burgers, beef burgers, to cheese quesadillas. Everything was great. I would definitely recommend.

After road tripping with two kids of 5 & 7 years old across the West, we were just about to freak out with the lack of culinary breadth afforded us. Burgers, burgers .. Hey what can we get here in this town - oh, pizza and burgers again. When I noticed that Black Hills Burger and Bun was rated #1 Burger in the U.S., I laughed and said well I am going to disprove that theory. Uh...joke was on me. We went for lunch at 1:30pm and had to wait 40 min for a table. No biggie, lots of people and they let you out to explore shops or talk outside while you wait. The menu had many unique burger combos with funny names. I ordered the "Western" and my wife ordered a chicken sandwich, kids had straight up cheeseburgers. We then waited for the magic....ummm..a good 30+ min for the food. Kids were getting uber fidgety and me just plain blood sugar decline frustrated. It arrived. ... And, I took one bite of it and said something nice but in a colorful fashion and that can't be put in Yelp. Frankly, I think they put crack in it (joking of course) or something because this was the following comments: Me: "darn, that may in fact be the best burger in America " Wife (note: confessed foody and non-beef eater): "Oh my Lord, that is unbelievable chicken sandwich" Daughter age 7: "(inaudible comment) then daddy, daddy, this burger is so so super duper good" So, net-net.... friendly staff, nice surroundings, epic burger. Go there at least once. (We sat next to the owner of one the larger hotels in the area who happened to be Asian and hails from our same town. He doesn't eat anywhere in Custer except this place) Nice job - highest rating possible. When you go, repeat this mantra whilst waiting: "It's worth the wait, it's worth the wait ...."

  • Riki H.

One of the best burgers we've had! We had the Fun Guy, a bison Westener and two burger of the week "Caesar" burgers. Patties were juicy and very well seasoned! Also loved the sweet potato fries with maple aoli. Usually there is a wait, but worth it! Staff was very pleasant and quick!

  • Peggy C.

My favorite kinda dive small joint. Start off with the loaded nachos...yum. The bugers are tender and juicy so take your pick. If you're a bean lover you gotta have them... and the pork tenderloin is just that...tender. It does need some kind of sauce.... I happen to like mustard on mine and they give you sweet cucumber chips let & Tom on a yummy fresh bun.....their BBQ sauce is sweet and tasty. Don't let the wait dissuade you..them move em through pretty quick... they close at two for lunch but open back up for dinner.

    (5)
  • Carrie D.

Read the reviews on yelp and ratings were outstanding! It's a small dive for groups of 4 or less. My boyfriend and I both had a bison burger ( I had the one with blue cheese and he had the one with cream cheese) and hands down best burger I've ever had. Sweet potato fries are a must. We also got dessert ... Banana bread pudding and coconut custard pie. Both were homemade. Waitress was friendly and helpful and service was fast. Even though it was a local dive, it was very clean. I am so happy we stopped in here!

  • Julie C.

Be prepared to wait. We had no idea of their "best burger" claim to fame and showed up at 5:05...bad call. Not sure what the story is with the hard open at 5 but there's a line every time outside the door before open. They let everyone in but then it takes an hour plus to get food and get out once you're seated since they've basics just taken 40+ orders and I'm assuming only have so much grill space. The people next to us didn't have their order taken for 30 mins and then it was another 30 to get their food. Seems like maybe that needs to be adjusted a bit? The burgers are delicious though. Worth the wait if you're up for it.

    (4)
  • Becky H.

The best cheese curds I've ever had! The burger was perfectly cooked and topped with roasted pepper, feta, spinach, and this amazing roasted garlic aioli. Well worth the wait, whether you live here or are just visiting.

  • Audrey A.

Not happy. Walked in at 145 told 45 minute wait and close at 2, refused to take my name. We decided to find another restaurant. A final note to this story the business attacked my post on Facebook and my friends comments on my post. Not a place I want to spend my money.

    (1)
  • Mary P.

Not to be mean but there is no way this is the best burger in the U.S. It was good. Not great. We waited for a couple hours for it to reopen because we felt like we had to try it. If they are open you will probably be happy you tried it but don't wait around for it or worry if you skip it. Service was very good.

  • Jumi Y.

Not the best burger ever, but nowhere near the worst. I liked this place, and found it to be one of the better places for food in the area. I am giving it 3 stars instead of higher because if I were to rate this place compared to places in my hometown, it would be a 3 (i.e, A-OK). They clearly take pride in their food and make everything they sell. I had the classic burger with jalepenos. The classic comes with the regular toppings- lettuce (the nice kind, no iceberg here!), tomatoes, home made pickles, and onions. The meat was well-seasoned but a little dry from overcooking. The bun was okay but also slightly stale (not off putting but still stale). I picked fries for the side. I also had a South Dakota microbrew IPA, which I thought was decent. The service was friendly and attentive. I would definitely come here again if I were in the area. There is a wait, but it's only about 30-45 minutes. Have some patience, and wait it out because you'll be glad you did.

  • Kathy B.

Loved this place! Saw all of the positive reviews on Yelp and decided to give it a try. My son and I both had the Classic with fries- delicious! The burger was juicy and flavorful! The fries were hot and crisp. Had the Pile-o-Dirt porter which was smooth and creamy. All-in-all it was a perfect little meal on a cold and rainy spring night in Custer, S.D.

This place is all it's cracked up to be! Excellent (buffalo) burgers prepared in amazing ways. We've had other buffalo burgers along the trip that tend to be dry & pre-made. These are handmade & cooked to perfection. I had the Texan with pepper jack cheese, sautéed onions, jalapeños & spicy BBQ sauce. My husband had one with bacon & fried egg. Both amazing! Great staff too. Agree with other reviewers: odd hours as they are open from 11am-2pm for lunch and 5-7:30pm for dinner. We got there at 5:15pm so missed the first sitting. We put our name on the list, went across the street for a wine & a beer and came back 50 minuets later to our table. So worth it! The kids aren't into burgers so both had the Fishy Fish sandwich. Excellent & crunchy. My husband wants to eat here again and again during our trip!!

    (5)
  • Chris D.

Excellent burger joint! It's busy because the food is that good. It's worth the wait so be patient. We started with the half nachos and cheese curds appetizers and each had one of the signature burgers with fries. Zero complaints.

  • Dave G.

Best food we had in the Black Hills. Small and always has a line, but worth the wait. The Hot Granny was excellent.

    (5)
  • Stephen M.

Usually, I would chalk up these high reviews to folks being hungry in an area with few offerings. But having eaten here, the 4-5 star reviews are legitimate: this place serves some of the best burgers around. Everything can be customized, so they cater to almost any taste. The Greek burger with feta was a winner. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. Black bean (veg) burger was good, too. Prices were higher than expected, but I guess that comes with being located off the beaten path. Highly recommend.

  • Leasa H.

Fabulous food, incredible service. We had the "original" and the "fun guy". The burger was lean but flavorful and just the right size. It was cooked perfectly and the toppings were just right. The servers were attentive and friendly and the atmosphere was great. On top of it all, everything was at a very reasonable price. Excellent meal!

    (5)
  • David O.

Wow wow wow!! This place is amazing. The staff is fantastic, the food is phenomenal, and the deployment is crazy efficient. This little gem was always busy but that didn't matter because the food made up for it. I had the the western burger during my visit and it was by far the best burger I ever had. If you're in the area this place is a must especially if you're a foodie.

  • David F.

I had read about the wait so I got there before they opened - still had to wait. But it is very much worth the wait. I had a double meat cheeseburger. Clearly 100% beef. Great flavor. Fries well above average. Hostess does an amazing job creating a waiting list, clearing tables, keeping people in the right order, and seating folks. Waiter very friendly and helpful. I am very critical of my burgers. And while this one is not in my personal top 5%, it was still outstanding. (I like my burgers greasy and unhealthy!) I would recommend you give this a try.

    (4)
  • Ahren A.

Great burgers! After reading previous reviews, we thought we'd give it a shot. We had about a 10 minute wait, which was just fine, it was packed. Once we got seated the hostess came and took our drink order, and told us our waitress will be there in a few minutes. I ordered the Hawaiian burger, I wanted the buffalo meat, but was told they ran out ( a big disappointment) and the sweet potato fries, which both were outstanding! My husband order the classic burger, and fries and said it was great. Both cooked perfectly. We would definitely recommend this place. I would have given it 5 stars, but due to running out of buffalo meat, was a little disappointing. Also the hours are a little odd, summer hours 11-2, and 5-7:30pm. Being a tourist town, I would have thought they would be open a little later, but apparently that doesn't stop people from waiting.

    (4)
  • John G.

They have moved to 441 Mt. Rushmore Road, just around the corner. Had the Fun Guy burger. Very good!

    (5)
  • Scott B.

Needed a dinner because mother nature rained on our campfire. Smallish restaurant with a waiting list, but because we were willing to sit at a couple of open seats at the "community" table we were seated right away. Staff seemed overwhelmed but hard working and cheerful. The burger and chicken sandwich that we had hit the spot but it took a long long time to get our food.

    (4)
  • Craig L.

Very crowded all the time, but so much worth the wait. It's about as good of a burger as I've ever had. Tasted remarkably fresh and the soft pillow-like texture of the bun was amazing. We had the weekly burger special with a dill sauce and it was delightful. Best place in Custer!

  • Kelly M.

Delicious! The Thai pork burger and the Hawaiian burger were a close tie for first in our family. Great stop.

Worth the wait. This hole in the wall place serves some swell burgers. I had the daily special, Hueva Jicanta which included jalapeño cream cheese and a fried egg. The buns are freshly baked and the burger which was fresh was perfectly prepared. I had an order of their cheese curds as well and they great and large enough to share. Topped with a Fat Tire beer and a perfect lunch was enjoyed. Service was fast and friendly. Ordered the upside down pineapple cake bread pudding with caramel sauce and this was the BOMB!

  • Mark M.

Yes, it is worth the wait in line for this place. Tasty burgers and super friendly staff. To top it off...they are dog friendly on the patio! This was huge...traveling with our dog we do not find too many places that you can grab a meal and not have to worry about what to do with the pooch. They were very accommodating. I had the buffalo burger with chipotle sauce and regular fries. all very good.

  • carrie r.

Wow, just wow! How can a plain ole burger and fries be SO good? 45 min wait but plenty of nearby shops to browse. Well worth the wait! Reasonably priced

  • Raj D.

Can you believe that this one of the absolute best burgers ever? I got the Iowa Blue Cheese and Bacon double.is it good? It's just awesome.

I just got a burger in Rhode island that made me miss the burger I got here a week ago. Simply delicious.

Had just left Mount Rushmore on a road trip and my tummy was grumbling for a hamburger. So, looked at a map... next town was Custer, and top on the Yelp list was Black Hills... perfect! I had a cup of chicken green chili soup and the burger of the week, which was called a "curd burger" with cheddar cheese curds, bacon, and other delicious fixings. It hit the spot for certain... so glad I stopped by. Plus, all the wait staff had smiling, friendly faces (and unexpectedly very attractive... cute girls in South Dakota? oh behave!) and were happy to point me down the road for a really good after-lunch espresso. The place is small and cozy, and was quickly packed with others who shared my joy for the curd burger. Seems like this is the #1 lunch spot in town for all the right reasons. Thanks for making my drive back to Denver a little brighter and more satisfying.

  • Tricia L.

HoLY WoW!! They should add the word best to the beginning of their name. Best Black Hills burger and buns explains it all. We waited approximately one hour from arrival to food. But I cannot say more how it was completely worth the wait and I would do it again any day. I had the Fat Smitty with coleslaw. My honey had the Iowan with Buffalo and sweet potato fries. The burgers were tender and juicy, cooked perfectly. The sweet potato fries were the most amazing sweet potato fries I have ever experienced. I would rate this 10 stars if I could! And the next time we visit from Iowa we will definitely make it a point to stop. No question.

Amazing hamburgers. Iowan fantastic. Greek fantastic. Texan fantastic. Western fantastic. Enemies the potato salad and beans were amazing! Great friendly service also. I highly recommend.

The guy at the hotel told us about this place, and he was so right! I got the Bad hunter veggie burger with fries and my mother got her favorite pork loin sandwich. I mean she looked like she was a little kid who just saw real Santa. The service was fast and friendly. We were early birds, so when we finished the line to wait was getting pretty long, and this was the off season!

  • A C.

This place really makes a mean burger. I had the Iowan and my bf had the hot granny. Both rocked. Also the deep fried pretzel fingers with cheese dip were amazeballs. What a gem. Would go to again if I'm ever near Custer.

  • Cara S.

I think we picked the best place to eat in Custer, SD. My husband loved his buffalo burger, and their homemade veggie burger (called the "Lousy Hunter" - I had to laugh out loud as I ordered it) is actually very good. It didn't taste like an afterthought, which was a surprise in this meat-loving part of the country. In addition, the homemade pickles are AMAZING! My husband doesn't like pickles on his burgers and sandwiches, but he loved theirs. If I pass through Custer again I'm definitely eating here.

Love! We love experiencing the new burger of the week! The atmosphere is great! The service is great even under the extreme pressure of being slammed from Open to close! We recommend BH Burgers and Bun Co to everyone!

  • John W.

We arrived at 4:30pm for the 5:00pm opening. A small restaurant with only 45 seats. We were the last group of 4 seated at 5:00pm. Service was quick and efficient and the burgers were great. Get here early.

  • Cassie C.

We stayed way longer at the Crazy Horse Memorial than we anticipated (Native American museum=awesome) and arrived here at 1:59 p.m. - they close from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.- w/ 4 hungry adults and 4 starving kids. All tables were full and we thought for sure we'd be turned away- nope, staff was excellent, assured us we'd made it in time, wait was short and fellow customers swapped tables so we could all sit together. As expected from reviews, the food was exceptional, not just for this area, but anywhere. Burgers were amazing, sweet potato fries excellent. Our waiter handled our hungry-grumpy kids really well and took the time to visit w/ us after we were done eating, not making us feel rushed at all. Many ingredients are locally sourced and a large selection of great deserts are made 'in house'. Superb food, superb staff. Make it a point to eat here while in Custer!

OH MY OH MY OH MY GOODNESS WOW I am a burger guy and thats holding back hands down best ever worth ever moment of the wait and yes you will have to wait there is a line for a reason

OHMYGOSH! This restaurant offers some of the most delicious burgers I've encountered anywhere. My husband had the buffalo burger and I had the Iowan (beef, bacon, blue cheese sauce, sautéed onions) and both were fantastic. Went back the next day for a redo! Store is usually crowded and fast-moving and esp. filled with locals. Wish we had one near home!

We visited Custer South Dakota last summer and I still cannot get this place out of my head. We ate there twice and both times were amazing. I want to drive right now from South Carolina to eat there. One of our all time favorites

Having the special! Love this place! I had their special Greek Burger and it was, by far, the best, juiciest, most flavorful burger that I've EVER had!!! Brilliant

  • Brian H.

We were in the area and figured to give it a try as a friend ate here and give it high praise. It also is supposedly America's best burger (according to TripAdvisor - perhaps not the most accurate source). Well, we arrived around noon and didn't see a line wrapping around the building, which we expected to see. Anyhow, we got up to the door to see a closed sign and a note saying that the oven was not working and they would re-open Monday. The oven was a hindrance as they cook their own buns. I can't give it an honest evaluation but I find it pretty bunk that they couldn't have cooked their buns elsewhere or just pick some buns up somewhere. Especially since it was a Saturday! I likely will never come to Custer again - its a rude tourist hell-hole basically - so I was very disappointed.

  • Julia N.

Excellent friendly staff in a cozy environment! Food was great! Had the Fat Smitty with BBQ beans. Wanted to try it with the cole slaw, but made a good choice. For dessert, the homemade brownie and brea pudding topped off a great meal! If you're from Southern California, I can compare this to the Sexy Burger truck and the Rider's Club joint in San Clemente!

By far the best food we had in South Dakota. Good service. Homemade buns. Great. Classic burger the best.

Great burger. It a small place so I wouldn't recommend it for party's bigger then 4 or 5. But get lunch or a early dinner here.

We stopped by for lunch two days running, as not a lot is open in October. This is, and it is a great place. One day we had beef burgers, the next day we had bison burgers. Both good. Of the sides we had - all good, also. Sweet potato fries, french fries, baked beans and coleslaw. The staff is very friendly - another draw to the restaurant. All in all, a great place.

Delicious burgers that are always worth the wait! Our first choice to eat in Custer is always at Burger and Bun! Superior food for excellent prices!

  • Jody G.

This place was worth the wait! I had the hot granny, a hamburger with cream cheese, jalapeños, bacon, and a sweet and spicy sauce. It was wonderful. Others in my group had the Big Smitty (hamburger with cheese and a fried egg), the western and the eclectic daily special. All were excellent! Sides were included and the prices were in the 7 - 8 dollar range. Very reasonable. We splurged on dessert - a delicious coconut custard pie and German chocolate cheesecake. Great dinner!

A quaint little burger joint with friendly service and a bit of a small menu, but don't let that deter you! You can customize your burger to your liking. Not to mention that the desserts are delicious as well! A must visit when in the area and in the mood for a burger. Try the buffalo burger!

Wow, amazing. Great kids meals: chicken strips. Great sweet potato fries, Idaho burger amazing. Service, attentive and kind. Wonderful experience.

Wow! This place is amazing! Be aware that they serve lunch until 2:00 and if you don't get in before then you won't be served. We were lucky enough to have a party not return and were graciously accommodated. Our server looked a bit flustered when we were seated and I thought we were in trouble! However, our server went above and beyond the call of duty when she offered to entertain our infant son so we could eat hot food! Best burger place in South Dakota!

  • Patrick S.

Outstanding. We arrived 10 minutes after opening and it was already slam packed - for good reason. Freshest burger I've ever had. They produce their own meat and buns, and I think their other ingredients are also locally sourced. They have a wide selection of unique choices, including vegetarian burgers. Surprisingly easy to find healthy options for a popular burger joint in South Dakota. Looking forward to trying more of their menu next time I'm in Custer. Also, great service.

It was over noon and busy. Service was slow but the food was worth the wait. Some of the best coleslaw I've ever had. Finally someone knows how to cook a buffalo burger!

  • Georgene F.

Hands down the best burger and bun I have ever had. I could have eaten a jar of the homemade pickles that came on a perfectly seasoned burger, and no wilted lettuce here- a crisp full leaf of butter lettuce on top. Add a side of Granny's beans and end with the peach cobbler - pillow of crisp cinnamon dough topping a generous serving of peaches. The restaurant is meticulous, service quick and friendly, and oh that burger- pure heaven!!

  • Don P.

Literally the best burger I've ever eaten. Some places win points by serving monstrously large portions, but this place just makes great, perfectly seasoned burgers. The fries were outstanding, too. It's worth the wait Despite being incredibly busy the staff was friendly and efficient.

  • Michelle D.

This place is crazy! Get there before it opens at 5:00 and get in line! And make sure entire party is with you. Burgers are the best we had in the area.

  • Orlando V.

The visit started off on a sour note. The waitress/hostess was rude. My phone was taken out of my hand by our waitress, i thought that was rude as well. The burgers are just burgers and nothing special. We live in Rapid City and will not be headed back. Firehouse Brewing Co has better service and the portions are a lot bigger. Not worth the hour drive. I ordered the german chocolate cheesecake which was pretty good.

I had been savoring for a burger at this place since I found out it was a must eat at burger joint and it exceeded my expectations as far as the food goes. I highly recommend The Greek Goddess burger...fresh spinach, feta cheese, roasted red pepper and kalamata olive aioli. YUM. I got the potato salad side which was homemade and delicious. You get a choice of white or wheat buns which are homemade. Their salads use only local grower produce. This place is super small so be prepared to wait. It's worth it. Service was outstanding and friendly. Can't wait to go back.

Noticed the line out the door during our trip to South Dakota. We waited quite awhile for a table. Worth the wait. Burgers were delicious. A lot to choose from and the homemade buns were so yummy. If you don't want to wait for a table, I would suggest ordering take out. Great customer service1! We had 5 kids under the age of 6 and the place was very kid friendly.

Had the Texan burger for lunch and I can honestly say it was one if the best burgers I ever had!!

Good burgers and a very friendly staff. Place was extremely busy and we had to order to go. Thought prices were great for a tourist area.

Easily one of the best burgers I've ever shoved in my face hole. It may actually be #1. Even as busy as they were our waitress was outstanding and friendly. We drove an hour and a half from Sturgis just to check it out and it was worth every second.

Good good good. Go buffalo burger. Homemade pies are excellent. They even have a vegetarian burger, not a common occurrence in South Dakota.

  • Matthew L.

Excellent service and even better food. Took four grand kids and parents plus another family with two kids (total six kids under 6 years old). The staff was unfazed by the commotion and remained calm and polite throughout. The kids menu had good variety of choices and was devoured by all. The burgers were excellent. My Greek Goddess burger was beyond excellent; perfectly cooked and wonderfully flavored. We will definitely be back.

holy cow this place is delicious! the best buffalo burger I've EVER had and the best sweet potato fries I've ever had as well. oh... and the best peach cobbler I've ever had (and that's saying a lot since I'm from Georgia). I'm almost glad I live 4 hours away or I would eat here every day and probably weigh 600 lbs. that being said... I'll happily making the drive back... even though all the hiking areas are crazy crowded.

We just had lunch here. It was delicious. I had the classic buffalo burger. My husband had the Western burger. Both of us really enjoyed our lunch. The buns are awesome and home made. The beans and fries were good too. I just wish I had room to try one of their homemade desserts, which looked delicious. Next time... This was a wonderful find. I highly recommend it!

One of the best restaurants in Custer, SD! My brothers and I took a trip to SD to check out the area, and we fell in love with this little gem. It is near downtown Cuter and is walking distance from most of the local Hotels. My brothers and I ate here about 3 times during the 5 days we were in the area and today are still talking about it. I live in Wisconsin and I wish we had Black Hills Burger and Bun Co. near us. Defiantly a place to stop at!!!!

My family and I were on vacation (In the Black Hills) and found ourselves in Custer, SD. It was a bit late for lunch and we were looking for burgers. We were directed by a store owner to the Black Hills Burger and Bun Co, saying that everyone she'd talked to said it was good. Boy was she right. I had the Hot Granny Burger and Wow! Bacon, cream cheese, chopped fresh jalapenos, and sweet/spicy jalapeno sauce - my taste buds didn't know what hit them. I think it was the best and maybe most original tasting burger I've ever eaten. I strongly recommend that you give it a try if you find yourself in Custer, SD.

Happened upon this wonderful place as we were looking for a place to park our U-Haul trailer. We couldn't help but notice the crowd on the front sidewalk. Took a chance and so glad we did. I had the classic cheeseburger with potato salad as my side. Yummy on both accounts. My sister had the black bean vegetarian burger accompanied by the potato salad. We couldn't stop talking about how good it was! The desserts looked delicious. We will be back again and will get dessert for sure. Everything on the menu is made from scratch. They even grind their own beef and buffalo. CLOSED SUNDAYS! Don't be disappointed and show up on a Sunday. Everything was 5star, from the service, to the food, to the atmosphere. Love it!!

Amazing burgers! I had a double Texan with buffalo and the sweet potato fries. It's to die for! A little bit on the greasy side but one of the if not the best burger I have ever had.

Went to this place for dinner tonight because fellow Yelper's said to. Anyway, I had the Texan burger and shared it with my mom, they were running short on Buffalo and since we were splitting it we wanted an extra patty, so one patty was beef and one Buffalo. The burger was amazing. We also upped the side to sweet potato fries and it was worth the $1. A friend that was with us had the Hot Grannie, he said it was amazing! He had the beans as a side which were awesome as well (I had a bite!) Then came the dessert.....they were out of what I really wanted, so we had Coconut Custard pie, chocolate/cherry bread pudding & creme brule. I would give the Coconut Custard pie a 5 star, the choco/cherry break pudding a 5 star (I would ask for a scoop of ice cream next time on top :). As for the creme brule I would give it a 3 star, not my favorite. 2 dinners with all the upgraded extra's, 2 beers, 3 desserts and the tab was $44 bucks....totally worth the money! All in all this is a cute little place to have a burger and a beer with some awesome funky choices. The walls are green, the table's, ceiling and floors are all hardwood, the walls are lined with a local artists photographs for sale. Server was great! What an awesome find.

Fried cheese curds were awesome! Our buffalo burgers were very good. I ordered the hot granny though, and I did not like the sweet & hot sauce they put on it. I think it was just pepper jelly, and they put way too much on the bun and it was way too sweet, soaked through the bun and I couldn't get it off. I wish I had ordered a different burger. Baked beans were very good and they make their own pickles. I think that's great, but they were sweet pickles and I am a dill pickle person. Dessert wasn't as good as I was hoping. The server was crabby and made a joke to me son about me. Kind of rude. We were on vacation in Custer in September.

Food was fantastic. I had a black bean burger and my husband had a buffalo burger and we were both very happy with our choices. The hummus appetizer was pretty good too. Only (small) complaint was that it was pretty loud, but it wasn't really the restaurant's fault.

  • Andrea A.

They may be very good but we got there at 1:50 and were told they reached their quota for lunch and we could not be served.

  • Joyce T.

Wow cannot describe the taste of their burgers. There is always a line out the door, but well worth the wait. I had the Hot Granny Burger with cream cheese, jalapenos and sauce and it was to die for. Had originally planned to take half home, but nope, ate the whole thing. Friendly staff, family owned, everything made fresh..Wanted dessert, but just couldn't fit it in. You MUST go here for the best burger ever!!

  • Judy M.

Excellent burgers - unique & delicious combinations of flavors & you can tell the meat is fresh - no frozen patties here! Best part for me is that buffalo meat can be substituted for beef on any burger, as beef often doesn't agree with me. Cole slaw & potato salad are obviously freshly made too. There's always a line to be seated, but it's well worth the wait. Can't wait till they move into their new location on Mt Rushmore Rd - hopefully they'll have more seating so the wait won't be as long.

    (5)
  • Katie F.

What a great meal! Whole family was extremely satisfied, and the wait staff was prompt / friendly. Burgers were excellent quality with homemade buns and creative toppings. My only criticism is that they were a little heavy handed with the garlic aioli on my burger. This is a new local favorite - we will be back!

  • BenandHeidi S.

Fast friendly service. Our server was amazing! He never stopped running the whole time we were there. He was on top of everything. The food was wonderful from the pulled pork nachos to the fresh hot burgers to the yummy homemade desserts. We couldn't be happier!

  • Adam M.

It's just plain good. One of the local merchants recommended it when my girlfriend and I were in Custer/Black Hills on vacation. The burgers aren't anything super fancy, but they are delicious. The only reason they don't get five stars is because I thought their drink selection was a bit limited. The menu is pretty concise: burgers, a few sandwiches, maybe a salad. They had some desert offering, which looked tasty, but we did not try them. See if they have the chipotle mayo. Hand-cut fries and chipotle mayo go together like bacon and everything else. Also, our server, who was fantastic, was/is most likely Kristen Wig's sister. She looked quite a bit like her and had the same laugh. The art on the walls was a nice addition as well -- a theme in Custer and the surrounding areas. Simple. Affordable. Filling. I definitely recommend it over anything you might think you like about the Sage Creek Grille also in Custer. Eat at Black Hills Burger & Bun twice before you think about venturing to some other uncharted, ill-reviewed facade.

Good burger joint if you have time for the wait. Hand made Patty on a fresh bun. Fair price. But small seating area and very little parking. If you don't want to wait 30 minutes or more to get in just head down the road to Chubby Burger in Hill City. Similar menu better prices and way better fries lots of parking.

Just as described....perfect. We had the Buffalo Burgers (western and Hawaiian) and they were excellent. And the Owner was very nice.

  • Teri T.

Best burger I've ever eaten. I don't recall the name of the burger (it came with a fried egg that I gave to my husband), american cheese, bacon and garlic aioli. The buffalo meat was juicy without being greasy and the whole wheat bun was excellent. Sweet potato fries well worth the extra $1 Don't be discouraged if there's a crowd, they get the food out fast.

  • K F.

We had to wait 10 minutes to be seated, but it was worth the wait. The food was wonderful. The people were friendly and offered suggestions. They even went out of their way to have the bday girl wear this embarrassing hat and sing Happy Birthday. Would visit again!

  • Sass S.

To start, this place has very strange hours... We couldn't even get in the first time we tried. But, it smelled so good we ended up going back the next day (during business hours). The food here is quite tasty, the fixings were fresh, and the meat was very well flavored and charred perfectly. The buns, and I have never talked about buns in a review, were really delicious, the perfect amount of bread to meat ratio. Would recommend, but be warned there are not that many tables and the hours are funky!

  • Mike A.

This was the best burger I have had in a long time. Maybe the best ever. Great marriage of flavors, really fresh meat and the bun was soft and flavorful. Not greasy at all, either were the fries. Great staff too.

  • Lindsay W.

The burgers are solid. Not the best I've ever had but a good meal. If your looking for a healthy option try the salad. A lot of places in South Dakota are kind of stingy with lettuce but this burger joint hooks you up so you don't feel ripped off.

    (3)
  • Yen M.

nice place to stop by and grab a bite. if you are passing thru the city from mt. rushmore like me, you gotta try a bison burger. if you are looking for something fancy, they are not a gourmet burger type of place. however, if you are wanting to have grab a well made burger for lunch, this is your spot. plus, the staff is super friendly.

My seven year old daughter says "It has really good service, and it has really good food." My 10 year old liked the variety including fresh salads and burgers. My wife like the decor and called it a "gem" in the hills of South Dakota. She liked the freshness and healthy options compared to the traditional tourist trap fare. Dad liked it because the ladies liked it. We were tempted by the desserts but were too full to order one!

This is an awesome place.... Our burgers were great, buns were even homemade. I highly recommend it. I had the buffalo burger and it was really good. The homemade beans were delicious too. The deserts look awesome but we were too full. Everything is homemade and wonderful !!!!

I loved the burger I had at this place. It was a mushroom/bacon/swiss special (bison burger). I wanted to return to this place before my trip ended, but could not fit it in. There is not that much seating in this place. I came at open to make sure that I would get a table for 4. I think that the bun had some kind of garlic mayo spread.

Leaving Rapid City or Mount Rushmore? Then please, stop here. This is one of the top 10 burgers that I have had in my life and I hail from California- home of In N Out. The buns are fresh and the patties were so juicy and tender. The service was also really great! Seriously, go here.

  • Monica F.

Great burgers, great service, great little place! Everything I have tried here is delicious, but I always go back to the Hot Granny. A fresh burger and bun topped with fresh jalapenos, cream cheese and jalapeno pepper jelly. Try it, it's DELICIOUS. The sweet potato fries have a special seasoning and are crisp and very tasty. The coconut pie for dessert is the perfect ending to a great meal. The place is small but the service is fast and it's worth a short wait for a table. The restaurant won the best new business in Custer and it was well deserved. We are thankful to have this gem in the Black Hills.
