I'm from Atlanta and working out of town and this place is right next door I yelped it and based on the excellent reviews I had lunch here. This is the first Mexican Restaurant I've been in that serves Al Pastor so I got the 3 taco lunch combo and the waiter recommends the pearl pineapple with the el pastor and I went with his advice since this is the only place that serves it to my knowledge. OMG they were by far the most amazing tacos I've ever eaten. I do make Al Pastor tacos at home if the carneceria happens to have made some Pastor. Then have Aqua Horchata to wash it all down with for the most authentic Mexican meal I have had in ages! Highly recommended!!!

We LOVE real Mexican food. This will now be our go-to Mexican restaurant! My friend and I each had a Margarita and laughed out loud it was so good. Then the Bean dip and the Salsa Bar. Yum! I had a single chicken taco cause I ate so many chips and salsa....and my friends had the pork and cactus, and some pork with chicken. They both said they were excellent. Our server did a good job explaining the Salsa Bar and got everybody's order perfect. We were stuffed.

Outstanding, fresh food that is plentiful, flavorful, and very well prepared. We went to the restaurant based on reviews and were not disappointed. Ernesto came over and chatted and showed us the awesome salsa bar that lets you add a little heat or interest to whatever you eat! Delicious--and what a great idea for no extra cost. My chicken fajitas were tasty and the meat was tender, the vegetables fresh...nothing frozen or canned shows up in their dishes. My husband just had a medical procedure and the delicious huevos rancheros made him forget how miserable he really was! A good sign always: 4 businessmen enjoying their lunches. Good advice from a previous reviewer to look for Target--La Reata is across the street--impeccably clean restaurant, genuinely nice people, and seriously good food priced right. We live in Hendersonville, NC, but look forward to traveling here for another genuine Mexican meal.

Authentic mexican food in greenville, sc, anything on the menu is delicious and flavored to perfection. I do wish they had more of a selection when it comes to drinks but they get 5 stars because the service was outstanding, and the owner is very personable and on a mission to make sure everyone leaves happy and full. We had to be rolled out of there.

REAL Mexican food and real margaritas! Also a great and clean atmosphere. I love the veggie burrito filled with fresh grilled vegetables. Ceviche is good, and everything is fresh. Usually good service.

Lunch was great. In town for business and found this place close by. Love that they have a vegetarian section on the menu. I had the 3 veggie taco plate with rice and beans. So tasty...lots of veggies...onions, peppers roasted tomatos, broccoli. Great with the avocado salsa added. The owner came out to check on me and said he normally also has squash and mushrooms on the veggie items. The tacos were great without though. Thumbs up!

Awesome food, real authentic mexican food (I was born and raised in Mexico, I know) the horchata was excellent, beens, rice and the ceviche! Muy buenos tambien!. The salsa bar is a good complement with the meals.

At first sight this looks like a hole in the wall ordinary low in Mexican American place. But it's very authentic! Delicious! Amazing he he choices and the salsa bar is incredible. I can only find a Mexican place that is this great when I travel to Texas or southern California. It's my favorite Mexican place in the upstate of South Carolina. Worth a try.

Saw this on yelp and thought we'd try it. Read the reviews and had an idea of what to expect. When we got there on the signs it says "Not Your Tex-Mex". We went in and was seated right away. Waitress was very attentive. It took us a little to decide what to order. We had ceviche as an appetizer after reading the review about how good it was. We loved it. Food was plentiful. And filling. Halfway through the meal we were already talking about coming back. I can see how the restaurant had the "strip-mall" feel to it, but don't let the location fool you. Can't wait to go back!

We thoroughly enjoyed our food and dining experience at La Reata. It had a great family restaurant atmosphere. The owner/manager came out and spoke to us and talked about the food. We went there because we heard the Tacos al pastor were the best in town. I'd say I have to agree. If it's authentic Mexican food you are seeking, try something beyond the Tex Mex staples at chain restaurants, try La Reata.

Guacamole was great. Salsas were decent. Burrito was very good. The cake was off da hook. ( Pastel de tres leche) Coffee was weak. Corona was cold. Wife was hot. Conversation was great. Go check this little place out.

Good spot. Good food and I love Mexican restaurants with salsa bars. The atmosphere is not as nice as some of the other local spots but the food is little better.

Consistently the best Mexican restaurant in town. Their tacos pastor on soft flour tacos are amazing as are their fish tacos. It's always a great choice.

This food is by far better than any mexican I've ever had! They have spoiled me. I don't like any other mexican place now. The meat is tender so you don't have to chew it forever. Awesome salsa bar and full alcohol bar. Try the Cantaritas!

Iama Critic Rating - La Reata Mexican - 3 Stars 5322 Wade Hampton Boulevard, Taylors, SC Overall: We have yet to find that illusive Greenville SC five star Mexican restaurant. But when we saw the ratings for La Reata we thought we might have finally scored a worthy prospect. Sadly, we just don't grasp what others are rating so highly. The service was average, our quesadilla was no better than you could get almost anywhere else. They serve the same boring beans and rice we have all had a thousand times. And perhaps for less because some of La Reata's more exotic entrees are somewhat overpriced. Sure I noticed the salsa bar, sure it nice, a step above most everyone else. But does a salsa bar alone make for a five star experience? Maybe I just hit them on a bad night or ordered the wrong entrees. I rarely order seviche and my guest critic, who always orders fajitas, ordered a boring quesadilla. However, until we try them again we stand by our ratings, and suggest a visit to Papa's and Beer where you can experience four star food and the MEGA BURRITO! The Service - 3 Stars (16%) The service we received was average at best. Our male waiter was rather useless, as most male waiters are. He was not sociable, interactive or helpful. He added nothing to our dining experience and did little more than fill glasses, bring us a bill and hide. For this performance we paid $6.50..... utterly ridiculous! We typically provide 20% or more for 5 star service on the pre-tax portion of the bill, 18% for 4, 15% for 3, 12% for 2 and 0% for 1 star service. The Food: Table Chips and Salsa - 5 Stars La Reata's table chips and salsa are simply phenomenal. La Reata provides a simply fabulous salsa bar with twelve or so incredible options! The hot salsa is extremely chunky and not runny! Wow, a five star salsa! Their bean dip sauce, which you almost never get for free, was also quite yummy. It has three star flavors; but because it is free I give it four stars. Frankly there is plenty to love about this salsa bar. $6.99 Chorizo Sausage Dip - 4 Stars Chorizo is one of the finest, greasiest substances on the planet. Eat enough of it and you can commit suicide! But you will die happy because this dip is just wonderful! I deducted a star only because the portion for the price is a little small! $8.99 Quesadilla - 3 Stars I was very surprised when my guest critic received his quesadilla. Considering La Reata's rating I was expecting something better than the plain, boring beans and rice I have had at every Mexican dive across the southeast! And the quesadilla was small. This "entree" came with a small plate of condiments that you could use as a salad or on your Quesadilla. There was simply nothing special about this ordinary quesadilla. $19.99 Seviche Fish and Shrimp Salad - 3 Stars One of the most expensive items on the menu, seviche is one of my favorite dishes if it is done right. The hard part about making seviche is that the vinegar and other sauces rapidly turn the other fresh ingredients brown and disgusting in a hurry. So you need to make it fast and serve it quick. I must admit that La Reata's sevechi is grand! But the price is just as outrageous. We are not talking lobster or king crab meat here. We are talking 120 count salad shrimp, some squid and un-named fish. At $12.00 this entree is five stars, but at twenty bucks it falls to three stars for this portion size. I love great flavor but I would like to be able to afford to go out again sometime soon. If money doesn't matter to you then by all means order this entree, it is incredible. Total Bill: $49.74 for two people including tax, tip and two soda fountain drinks. Final Thoughts: Our rating for La Reata is obviously lower than their average. For this reason we will try La Reata again. Hopefully they will do better next time and we will order the more popular entrees.

We've hit the other two Mexican spots within about a mile. While they offer the typical menu, we found something far better here. Tacos Mixtos are the best! Food is fresh. Salsa bar is awesome.

The best Mexican restaurant we've discovered. Don't be thrown off by the small location. Authentic Mexican food from a Californian owner. Salsa bar and bean dip provided with chips when you arrive. Very informative and friendly staff.

La Reata was recommended to us by someone who lives in the area and has dined there before. We were on a business trip and had a party of 10 and were looking for some authentic Mexican food. We found it at La Reata. Awesome food, salsa bar and excellent service. You can just feel how well this place is run and see why it is highly regarded. We met and talked to the owner. He has been is this business for over 40 years and based on the time we had there you can see why. I live in California where there are plenty of Mexican restaurants to choose from. La Reata is u[ there with the best ones I have eaten at..... Try the California Burrito,,,, awesome !!

I got take out yesterday for lunch and it was amazing. I orderd 2 tamales (one pork, one chicken) and that came with rice and beans. The food was top notch, very filling, and affordable. If I lived in town I'd be here pretty often!

Very solid Mexican food. The atmosphere is strip mall to the max, but that doesn't bother me much. The service is somewhat spotty, but we haven't had any major problems here. The food makes up for it. The tacos are my go-to, and the salsa bar is great. Just say no to covered in cheese Gringo-Mex

I tried this place after reading reviews . Very clean. Food was fresh. Server was friendly . Just not my taste as we usually eat tex -mex style food.

This is the real deal if you want fresh, truly authentic Mexican. Worth a visit for the salsa bar alone! Every salsa & refried beans made entirely from scratch (no cans here) and incredible homemade chips & tortillas!! Our nephew has severe food allergies and they are able to accommodate him...which turned his family into regulars. Wish we had a place like this in ATL. But now it will be a "must" stop whenever we visit Greenville!

This is a small place owned by a Mexican, and man can he cook! Tacos, burritos, pozole, tortas, sopes, beer & a salsa bar This is actual Mexican food, don't go expecting to find Taco Bell style anything. Enjoy!

REAL Mexican food....fresh, fresh, fresh....this guy can cook and he makes a lot on the menu from scratch...eg. tortillas, corn and flour, corn chips, refried beans, etc. etc. The salsa bar is amazing. Bring your appetite...you will need it.

You HAVE to try out La Reata Taqueria in Taylors (across from Target). They have the most authentic food you can get this side of the border, incredibly fresh ingredients and the most amazing kick-butt awesome, out -of-this-world delicious pico de gallo ever on their salsa bar. It is also one of the few restaurants where you can get crema instead of sour cream. SO GOOD!!! p.s. the california burrito is HUGE!!

Tired of the tasteless mystery meat of the mexican chain in town? This is a small family owned restaurant out of California. Everything cooked to order (versus everything in steaming trays). They have a salsa bar and are friendly. Certainly worth a try.

So I went to La Reata for dinner tonight. I've become a big fan of the place. So much so that I've started ordering anything that sounds remotely good. You see, the menu is in English, sort of, but the descriptions are lacking. I ordered Carne en su jugo. Which I translated as meat in his juice. I had no idea what that might entail but dude man, (Eduardo? I wanna say Eduardo. Not that I think all Mexicans are named Eduardo, but it feels right. Christ, I should know the guy's name, I've talked to him at least once a week for about 2 months.) Anyway, Eduardo has never served me a bad meal and I eat all over the menu. So the English description said (Beef, Bacon, and Beans). You had me at bacon menu, well played. So at this point I'm expecting anything. Well, I was sort of expecting Au jus with beef and bacon. The lady asked me if I wanted corn of flour tortillas, so I expected something spoonable anyway. Turns out it's a stew and it was very good. It would've been much better on a cold day instead of an 80 degree day in late October. Like I said, the guy just can't make a bad meal. Plus, he's one of the nicest and most attentive owners I've met at a restaurant. I still don't know what I was supposed to do with the tortillas though. I ended up dousing them in salsa and cheese and horking them down alongside the stew. So that was tonight's meal. Not this best I've had there but better than I'd find at the large Americanized Tex-Mex type places (Corona, Monterrey, Mr. Salsa's, et al). I can understand how some people like those places, it's just not for me. I'm a man who enjoys flavor. I guess I should explain the place now? I'm kind of Tarintinoing all over this review. It's a small restaurant that is in the middle of expanding. They are in a strip mall and are taking over the next unit over. At the moment, they sell beer and I guess wine. I've never thought of having wine with Mexican though. The expansion promises a full bar and alot more seating. The kitchen is set up kind of like a deli. There is no back of the house. If I were so inclined, I could sit and watch the man cook everything he's serving me. Hell, he'd probably enjoy talking about it. The dude lives for food and making sure his customers enjoy it. Anyway, no steam trays and nothing is sitting out. There is also a pretty damn good salsa bar in there. Eduardo offered us a new salsa he's working on today. Cilantro to start and a fiery habanero back, the guy seems to genuinely enjoy serving people. As you can probably tell, I love this place. It straddles the line between taqueria and Americanized Mexican restaurant perfectly. It isn't as intimidating as my favorite taqueria (La Estrellita) is to people who don't speak much Spanish, but still offers authentic dishes and new experiences for the adventurous. So, it's a taqueria I can take my Anglo friends to.

Easily the best authentic Mexican on this side of town. Full of flavor, salsa bar with flavor and tear jerkers. FRESH! Love their food! Multiple visits, never disappointed.

This is the definition of fresh food. They do not serve ground beef because, as the owner put it, "with ground beef you never know what you are really getting, and we Mexicans do not eat ground beef." he also told me that their produce does not come from a food truck, it comes from the farmers market in Atlanta. He makes the trip once or twice a week to pick the freshest food. I thoroughly enjoyed the restaurant, and will be back soon.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
