We come here EVERY time I am in Greenville. The chile rellenos are not to be missed and the pollo fundido is always solid. Go for a glass (or three) of their sangria.

Iama Critic Rating - El Matador Restaurant - 5 Stars 2919 Wade Hampton Boulevard, Greenville, SC Overall: Well dear readers Chef Iama Critic has hit the big Two Five O, as in 250 Yelp reviews baby! And the chef worked his butt off for this one. Seems he tried no less than four times to get in the doors of El Matador before the grace of God let him in! Seems our schedules just never jived! And in all those 250 Yelp reviews Iama Critic's Five Star Restaurant Review crew has never found a five star Mexican restaurant in Greenville SC. Well the wait is over Mexifinatics, El Matador is the place. Sure the four star flavor salsa is too darn runny, but they give that stuff away! The rest of the menu is five star delicious! The Service - 5 Stars (20%) Oh sweet Angie! She drew me a smiley face and all, but that ain't what makes Angie the bomb! This lady handled our orders with class and style! And unlike 75% of waitresses, Angie is a delightful conservationist! You know, that is when the waitress gives a hoot and actually TALKS with you, smiles and actually cares if you are enjoying yourself. But who wouldn't enjoy themselves with Angie around. All you other waiters and waitresses need to take Angie lessons! Maybe you would make a little money for a change! We typically provide 20% or more for 5 star service on the pre-tax portion of the bill, 18% for 4, 15% for 3, 12% for 2 and 0% for 1 star service. The Food: Table Chips and Salsa - 4 Stars El Matador's table chips and salsa would be phenomenal if it were not for one thing. Oh, they got the chunk! Oh, they got the flavor! But they are just too dang runny! They need to drain off the juice! No guy wants their girlfriend's dress ruined by dribbling salsa. $4.50 Small Guacamole Dip - 4 Stars This price and size of this dip is average but the flavor is a step up from from the rest, so it is mighty good and earns four stars. Your chips will cry if you don't order this guac. $6.50 Chili Taco Salad - 4 Stars I can't tell you how many taco salads I have eaten. And this one is right up there with the best of them. The shell was strikingly different, light, crispy and surprisingly flavorful. I actually ate the entire shell! $10.50 #19 Burrito, Enchilada and Relleno - 5 Stars My guest critic ordered this seemingly ordinary combo. Buy nah, my friends, remarkable were the flavors and incredible was the meat within his burrito and enchilada. I know they look much the same as most. But while my pictures are worth a thousand words, you can't savor the flavor of words. But take my word for it, this special combo is special! And then there is that amazing relleno! More on that later! $15.50 #21 El Matador Sampler - 5 Stars A chalupa, an enchilada, a taco, an amazing chile relleno, awesome Spanish rice and beans worthy of being called Mexican! And then it also comes with a sopapilla and a mug of genuinely fantastic Sangria..... and I don't drink! Well, I guess I did that night! It took three photos just to cover this entree! And every item was better that you get elsewhere. You know the boring beans and rice you get everywhere else? Well not at El Matador! The rice is real SPANISH rice! And the beans were so thick you could spread them on bread and make a sandwich, and the flavor is so good! But the relleno, the relleno... oh sweety... you beautiful crispy round Mexican goddess! How I wish they sold you in a twelve pack like donuts! Flan - 5 Stars Who cares about the price. This heavenly desert is simply amazing. Words cannot express the delight my taste-buds experienced while delving into the richness of this desert. I actually like this flan better than the best cheesecake, it was that good! Total Bill: $49.58 for two people including tax, tip and two soda fountain drinks. Final Thoughts: Ok, I admit, El Matador is more like 4.5 stars. But I don't give half stars, so what's a critic to do? El Matador is too good for four stars, but really isn't perfect yet. And I am so tired of eating at countless Mexican restaurants hoping to find perfection. So until El Matador can snatch that last half a star out of my hand, like a good little grasshopper, there really is no perfect Mexican restaurant in Greenville. But El Matodor is the simply the BEST I have found!

El Matador is one of those hole in the wall places that will blow your socks off. FYI- The salsa is made on site. The father grows his own vegetables in his greenhouse to prepare the salsa they serve. I have always enjoyed El Matador when I'm in Taylors. The service is fast and the staff is very friendly. The food...is GREAT!! It can get crowded on the weekends but that is all I have to say, a crowded place isn't serving bad food. They're serving awesome food.. Go during the week if you don't want to wait a bit..It is worth it either way!!

Very good food. Feels like you're at home with the low lighting and friendly service. Good choice for a weekday meal but they are really busy on weekends so be ready for a wait. Margarita's are delicious.

My family loves el Matador, and have been coming here regularly since they opened 35 years ago. The food is outstanding, I love the cheese dips and fundido's; fantastic stuff. Best wait staff around.

Yeah, this place was a big disappointment, especially considering how crowded it was. I had a big burrito and it was the usual huge mess of cheese, ground beef and not much else. The margarita was good though.

My wife and I have been wanting to try this restaurant yet is closed on Sunday's which is our Mexican food day out. We decided to try it tonight. The lighting was extra dim so hard to read the menu; honestly, wasn't a lot to select from anyway compared to many other of the Mexican restaurants in the area; with this being said, I decided to just order their hard shell tacos with sour cream and guacamole and my wife got a fajita salad. This was the worst we have ever eaten and will never go back, same with the rice and beans I got with mine. We left this place and I was wanting to go to another restaurant, couldn't eat any more and this is not me as I have always cleaned my plate everywhere else.

I am still trying to wrap my mind around all the rave reviews of this place. It is those reviews that lead my friend and I there tonight. After reading the great reviews and passing this place several times, each time catching a glimpse of a packed parking lot, I believed I stumbled upon the go to place for a great, or according to many reviews, several great Mexican dishes. Now, after a highly disappointing experience from start to finish, I need to add my 2 cents...speaking of cents, I wish my friend could get his money back for this less than savory experience. To start, the server was not very pleasant or helpful. When I asked what came on the "super burrito," she looked at me puzzled and then set me straight by tritely saying "burrito sauce." What she failed to mention is that I should have brought my swim gear because I was going to be drowning in said burrito sauce. My dish was ok, nothing special, and I believe I could have filled a carafe with all the sauce. My friend's dish barely reached the okay mark. When the only part of your combination dinner that engages your salivary glands is the rice, you know you've fallen victim to the hype. Service poor, food not any better. The only positives to my experience is that I never have to spend future time wondering what I may be missing from this place and not so much bat an eye in the direction of there confounding packed parking lot.

We went to Greenville for a long weekend. My husband has diabetes and can eat pretty safely in Mexican restaurants. Our host recommended El Matador. Wow! I had the fried stuffed jalapenos with the house ranch/guacamole sauce, and they were perfection. My husband had the beef and chicken fajitas and loved it. My strawberry margarita was so great - not too sweet, and not too strong, but just right. The waitress realized it was our first time there and gave us samples of the cheese dip and guacamole. All were great, as was the mild salsa and chips. Even the flour tortillas were great - they were charred a bit on the grill, and I couldn't stop eating them. Service was fantastic, and the wait staff worked well as a team. The atmosphere was right on. LOVED the lounge in the front of the house. Love, love, love this place. We'll be back when we return to Greenville. A very unique local business that obviously is focused on excellence. !Muchas gracias, El Matador!

Went because I thought the building was beautiful. Turned out to be a very interesting Mexican restaurant. Food was fantastic, so was the service. Met the manager and he remembered my name. This place made it feel like family and was a great price too! I definitely suggest this place to anyone who wants to go somewhere eclectic, along with delicious food. An easy 5 stars all around

What a cool place. This spot is one of Greenville's cherished Mexican restaurants. It is in an old house that is decorated with a variety of eccentric paraphernalia, including a giant portrait of the owner and his pregnant wife looking like Harley Davidson rock stars. The food was really good, a different kind of Mexican flare. You must get cheese dip or guacamole. Great spices and the chips are always hot. My fiancé got the chile relleno and he has been obsessed ever since, trying to recreate it in our kitchen. I got a burrito but will get something else next time. A great little Greenville treasure.

Apparently accepting reservations means nothing here. 6pm reservation...still waiting at 6:30 (and our entire party was here on time). This is looking to be a "twofer" visit as my family says...first and LAST visit unless the food is exceptional which I doubt it will be. Well, after finally being seated and then waiting 40 minutes on food (one person in our group had to wait 50 minutes) EPIC FAIL. Surprised at how this place has been in business for so long.

I've eaten here 1time and it was great. I got the "superburrito" ( I think that's what they call it). It's huge and is definitely a full dinner and a lunch the next day. My grandpa has been going there for decades and drove us an hour to Greenville just to eat there. It was delicious and I'm about to hop in the car to get me another superburrito just talking about it.

Great Mexican food! The kids love the food too which makes dining out a little easier. The guacamole is amazing and the margs are very well done too. The chimis and burritos are very tasty. Haven't had a bad dish yet.

I've eaten my fair share of Mexican food, at restaurants all over the country, and South Carolina seems to have a unique menu item...Pollo Fundito. Basically, it's kind of a chicken and cheese chimichanga, with more cheese sauce poured over the top. Cheese-o-licious. You can get it at most mexican restaurants around here...but El Matador is the best. A margarita on the side (and yes, they have good margaritas), and you've got a great meal. The rest of their food looks good, but seriously, I've never tried anything else. My first time here I was told "you have to try the pollo fundito", and it's been the only thing I've gotten since.

Returned with another couple, and explored more of the menu. The chili rellenos are amazing! The papas fritas are a great appetizer, and enough for 4. Our companions had the Texas burrito and some enchilada thing. Everyone was impressed with the food and quality. The only minor complaint was the sangria ( just not impressed), but the margaritas made up for it.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
