Great food, a little pricey, not the place to go if you're in a hurry though!

Definitely in the top 5 if not The Best place for Philly cheese steaks in Charleston. I base my research off of City Papers special issue on the subject a few years back and my own fondness for God's gift to sandwiches. I have made my decision. Philly's is my favorite. The ratio of meat:cheese:bread is what it's all about and they have it down to a science. A perfect blend of herbs, spices, onions and mushrooms. It was a tough decision and reaching a conclusion probably cost me a few pounds, but the vote is in! ;)

I grew up near Philadelphia and loved to get cheesesteak sandwiches and hoagies. Family moved to SC in the '70's. We were excited when we found Philly's (different location at the time) in Summerville. Worth the 40 mile round trip! This is their third location, but the food was always top notch. I live in Hawaii now, since retiring, but always make it a point to eat here when I visit - often on the way home from the airport if the timing is right. Just a great place. And be sure to try the Tasty-Kakes! Butterscotch krimpets are the best. Much better than the Hostess brand stuff.

Philly's is mind blowing! Honestly...The philly cheese steak sandwiches are consistently fantastic and there french fries are better than any fast food place. And best of all, its a local family owned place. And it shows...The quality is great and the people are excellent. Why go to the subway down the street when you can to Phillys and have a satisfying experience.

    The food is great!!!!!!!

This is, quite simply, the best cheesesteak that I've found outside of Philadelphia. The lasagna and other specialties are good as well. I've honestly never had anything bad here. It's a family owned establishment, but you should know that it tends to be quite busy during rush hours.

The food here is fantastic every time I have came here everything was great until about 10 minutes ago. . The line at first was fairly short it took about 20 to 30 minutes wait time no big deal especially it being friday, but I saw at least four different people walk by a sandwiches just sitting there for a while no one bothered to call out the order this one waitress kept walking by after they handed people who were there after us go ahead with their order while ours was sitting on th counter.

  • Mo M.

The deluxe Philly was really good. The staff is very friendly. I would suggest calling ahead to avoid the wait time since the food is cooked to order.

Ok read these reviews and was on the fence but gave it a chance and was pleasantly surprised! They have three sizes 8 inch, 12 inch, and 18 inch. Either way I was hungry got the 12 inch and was way too much food. Now mind you it was $12.00 bucks for just my 12 inch it was huge and worth it I felt. If your a first timer.. Go for a 8 inch and a side. There onion rings are Awesome!! The food there honestly is quality!! If you just want a Sandwich go for a 12 inch and have at it. I finished half my 12 inch and my fries. Next time I'll get a 8 inch. I recommend this place it's pretty good.

Philly's is definitely my favorite guilty pleasure. I go here at least once a week to satisfy my philly craving. Food is always hot, fresh, and just how I ordered it and the staff is always super nice and friendly!! Definitely a must if you're in the area!!

When I moved to SC from IL in my early 20's I was a very picky eater and hadn't tried much of anything. That "much of anything" also included a cheesesteak sandwich. I'm sure I always skipped over it on menus b/c I wasn't a big steak eater, and I didn't like mushrooms or onions. While my dislike for mushrooms hasn't wavered, and I still avoid raw onions like the plague, I'm warming up to caramelized onions and of coarse now love steak! So when I moved into my first apartment down here, the Water's Edge, and found Philly's right up the road, I decided to give it a go. That was many many years ago, and boy am I glad I ventured in. I ordered my first cheesesteak with bell peppers and American cheese. Hooked! The sandwich was delicious back then and still is today. Perfectly seasoned steak, fresh bread that is soft inside with a crunchy exterior. All of their side items are great from french fries to the potato salad. I've also had their Italian deli sandwich, excellent as well. With the Tummy Tickler specials, I can now get a steal of a deal for $6 since even the mini version is too big for me to eat in one sitting. So if you travel up D. Road far enough to get to Ladson Rd., make a right and pull into Philly's. You won't be disappointed.

Food is prepared fresh so you may have to wait. Well worth the wait especially the Chicken Philly. Lunch time is always packed. Sandwiches are overflowing with meat. Best Phillycheesteak in Charleston!!!

My last visit was 5 years ago, shortly before I returned to the Left Coast. Philly's was at the top of my list of restaurants to visit upon my latest visit to the area, and it's every bit as good as I recall. The staff is helpful and friendly, and the bellybuster 17" sandwich will easily feed two. While not on the menu, Provolone and Pepper Jack may be substituted for American cheese on sandwiches. If you like cheese steak sandwiches, Philly's is the place!

Tried a cheese steak sandwich and fried mushrooms with my hubby. Food was excellent and everything smelled great. Small place but service was pretty fast. You order in line then if eating there you take a table and the waitress will bring out your food to you. Nothing fancy but excellent food for good prices. Highly suggest it.

Coming from the Philadelphia area a solid cheesesteak is something I missed. Phillys was spot on. Their ingredients and steaks are right from the Philadelphia area brought tears to my eyes. For those of us that know you can't get a good cheesesteak outside of the Northeast. I highly recommend grabbing a cheesesteak.

  • Stormy R.

Tried Philly's on a Friday night- the wait was moderate. Its fairly small inside, but it never got so crowded that all the tables were taken. I ordered a 12 inch cheesesteak to share with the toddler, the husband ordered Lasagna, and we ordered a basket of fries to share. It was waaaay too much food! The lasagna was enough for 2 people, though we didn't know it was going to be so massive when ordering. Go with less food than you think you'll need here. It was tasty and we stuffed ourselves more than we probably should've and still had a bunch of food left. We hated to waste so much food.

Seriously the best cheese steaks in Charleston. I have always gotten the chicken philly. It is dripping with cheese and green peppers and onions. omg the ooey gooey yummies is just insane. I have tried the regular cheese steak and its just as delicious, but there is something about that chicken cheese steak that always gets me. The place itself is small on the inside, maybe 20 people can fit in there to sit and eat, the outside - maybe 10? Doesnt matter, get it to go, it will still be delicious when you get home and devour it, and then you dont have to worry about people staring at you as you exclaim out loud how awesome it tastes :) The desserts are also to die for. Not sure who makes them or where they get them from, but wow. Delicious. Only con to this place is that it is closed on Mondays. booo. otherwise, its all A +++++

Very friendly staff. Very good cheesesteak sandwiches. The bread could have been better.

Best cheesesteaks in the Charleston area! Living in Mt. Pleasant, it takes some motivation to get all the way up to Summerville. Philly's is my motivation. Every time I go in I have these grand ideas of trying something new but as soon as I walk in that door, all I want is a cheesesteak. You get an option of an 8", 12" or 18" and then have a small variety of toppings to include. My favorite: with onions, peppers and added pepper jack cheese. Gooey, cheesey deliciousness! They cook the cheese in with the meat so it's gooey and moist throughout instead of just adding it on top at the end. Every bite is amazing and before you know it, you've just eaten 12" of sublime cheesesteak and are already thinking about when you can come back again for more. Throw their yummy fries into the mix and you'll start debating the merits of moving into the apartments across the street just so you can be closer to Philly's.

As a Jersey grown transplant to Charleston I miss foods from up north. Today, I felt a little bit like I was back home. I wish I didn't live so far from Ladson ave!

No matter what we have ever ordered it has always been terrific! Have heard some say they think little expensive but we feel it has always been worth it!

Absolutely the best cheese steak in town! Now that I think of it, all the food here is delicious!

  • Shelcie G.

Always great!!! Well worth are drive from west ashley... No other cheese steak is comparable in Charleston...

    (5)
  • Perry T.

Ridiculously expensive. The food is good, but it cost me almost $18 for lunch! I had a small cheeses steak with three toppings, large drink, small fries, SMALL coleslaw (it was about a handful) and small onion rings. The small sandwich alone with a mere three toppings is $8.50! But that sandwich alone will not fill you up. For $5 you can go to Arbys for a super roast beef with lettuce and tomato, and get plenty of barbecue, cheese and horseradish sauce. Believe it or not, you get the same amount of meat. Now you may think there is no comparison, but there really isn't that much of a difference. And I LOVE my meat sandwiches. And if you think about it, there really is no difference between roast beef and chopped steak anyway. Philly's is good, and I can afford it, but I won't be going back. They are just too expensive.

The food is great and the employees are friendly, but it would be nice if they expanded. Its much too small in there. Other than that its great.

We love Phillys!! The best cheesesteaks in town!! The lasagna is amazing also and huge! Enough to take home for another meal. I also love the antipasto salad. When I am watching my calories I always order it. It has a great homemade dressing and tons of meat and cheese. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu!!

    (5)
  • Melissa M.

Best cheesesteak around! Great spaghetti and meatballs too! Have never had a bad meal at Philly's!

  • Glenn V.

Typically my reviews encompass as many aspects of the dining location that are worth writing about. Having gone to Pilly's four times, I am going to make it short and to the point. The Cheese-steak is phenomenal, the shredding of the meat, the transparency of the cheese (to the eye, not to the taste buds). Served on fresh baked rolls, with or without grilled onions. I typically order the largest Original and when I control myself, I can get 3 meals out of the order, I pay the extra few dollars for the extra steak. I ventured off the Cheese-steak tunnel vision approach, just once and ordered the hoagie. I tried the 'Soprano', made mainly of Italian cold cuts (Provolone, Genoa Salami, Capicola, Proscuitto, Pepperoni) Yum! They serve salads, burgers, shrimp plated and have a nice kids menu. Phill'ys gets a little crowded (orders take a bit to time to process) and calling in prior will not help your wait time. I can say with NO reservation that the food I have experienced is well worth the wait. Suggestion: If you get too anxious and hate to wait, there is a cheap bookstore 2 doors down that sells .50 cent paperbacks.

Ok, so I wasn't blown away by these cheesesteaks. However, they were pretty damn good. I think I initially suffered from a little overhype after seeing all the super positive reviews on here. Guess I was expected the best sandwich of my life. Which it wasn't, BUT it was definitely a really good philly. I've never had a **Real** philly cheesesteak, so I'm no expert here (unless you count one from some random place inside the Philadelphia airport) but I can see this being close to the real deal. You can't make this combination of ingredients work much better together than this place does. I will however go for the extra cheese on mine next time. I'm sure it had an appropriate amount of cheese, but not nearly enough for this guy. Service was decent. They were kinda slow, but it was busy. Seems like phoning ahead is the way to do it, tons of people came into pick up pre-ordered food while I was waiting on mine. Other items were so-so. Fries were the little skinny ones with no flavor that I hate, so not a fan of that. Rigatoni with meatballs was decent, but quite a bit on the salty side. Just stick with what they do right, good sandwich. Also, this sandwich is huge(the large) so consider going the small unless you've got quite the appetite. I'll be back for sure.

Food was excellent, staff was friendly and the price was just right. We will definitely be coming here again!

  • Wendy G.

I love this place! best cheesesteak I have ever had. The bread is soft and fresh, the steak with grilled onions, mushrooms and peppers is the bomb. I add Jalapenos to mine because I like spicy and it is the best. The Lasagna is terrific as well.....Lots of cheese, tomato sauce is slightly sweet and the pasta is cooked right on. I say go there , eat up and repeat~

I don't try a lot of things when I go out to eat. So this is a 5 star rating on the philly's cheesesteak. Amazing, favorite place to get a philly's cheesesteak.

Excellent polite service. High-quality meats. Sufficient portions. Air conditioned and mellow. Precisely what I'm looking for in a sandwich shop. Philly sandwich is what you want to order.

  • Mike W.

Nice Cheese Steak but WAY WAY TOO Long to wait! It should not take 20 mins to make a sandwich that is your speciality. This business would not make it in an area where they really make these. No bad, I liked it, but I don't have time for this. By the way, calling in ahead of time doesn't do any good, you still have to wait on line to pay and pick up.

Um well this review is biased since I'm a vegertarian and was dragged here by meet-eating people. Just don't go here if you are a veg (I know.. it's a cheestake place why would you?) I ordered the Gyro, sans meat of course. And I guess I'm so accustomed to eating gyros where i'm from (NY - gyros a street staple) so if you say hold the meat they should replace with falafel or the pack on the veggies... but this was just a regular pita with iceburg lettuce and a couple slice of tomato and plain yogurt that they call tzatziki sauce!! Where was the dill and cucumbers in that? Don't call it tzatziki sauce if it is just yogurt!! It was so plain and mealy I think I burned calories just eating this thing. The 3 stars is b.c I'm a ranting vegetarian so I factored in my friends opinions. They really loved it.

Yummy! Nice variety on the menu and the food is prepared fresh as you order so sit down and relaz while they prepare a delicious meal for you.

Ordered the small hot philly cheesesteak and the small cold roast beef sandwiches; delicious and more than enough to hold the average person through the next meal. The chocolate eclair was pretty good too.

Visiting from Richmond, Va and this place was a recommended eatery while in Summerville and it did not disappoint.Since its named Phillys I had to try the house specialty, the sandwich was excellent. Everything tasted fresh, and came out hot. My stepson had the spaghetti and said it was good and the portion was huge. Will definitley come back when I'm in Summerville.

  • Jarrod S.

This is the best cheesesteak in Charleston. I have a standing order from my roommates to get one every time I am in the area. I take all my friends from Philly here just to rub it in their faces.

  • frank m.

The service wasn't that great. It was pretty pricey considering its a sub, and it didn't taste that great. Don't get me wrong it was good, just not great. I've been to Philadelphia and had a real Philly Cheesesteak, this was nothing like it.

    (2)
  • Nathan M.

Amazing cheese steaks, my friend said they have awesome lasagna as well, speedy service, I give it 4 stars.

Awesome food. Best Philly around and they make everything fresh. Takes a minute, but MAN! Worth the wait.

  • J. W.

I just tried this on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is small and cozy - nothing fancy. The staff was very friendly and the restaurant smelled great. I tried the original cheesesteak and found it to be qutie tasty. It wasn't the best I've had and would probably earn three stars by itself. The friendliness of the staff and the promise of more tasty items - both by the smell and a quick look at the items on other patrons' plates - bump it up a notch.

I went there with co-workers during business travel from Long Beach to Charleston, South Carolina. I ordered the 12-inch philly cheesesteak deluxe. When I received my food from the server, very courteous may I mention, the aroma of the cheese, meat and bellpeppers immediately struck my nose. The size of their footlong is HUGE. Normally I can eat a footlong from Subway without any hesistation, but this cheesesteak was a true challenge for me. I was only able to finish half of it and took the remainder of it back to my hotel room, where I finished the remaining half for dinner. This cheesesteak sandwich, by far, was the best I EVER had in my entire cheesesteak eating life, and I recommend that anybody who visits Charleston and surrounding cities take a little drive down to Summersville (It's right down the road from Charleston AFB, literally), find this place, eat there and be in cheesesteak heaven. I will definitely be back to this place.

Rick was my roomie in college, and later my best friend. He's from Philadelphia, and a pretty good athlete. Good enough to earn a football schollie to USC. Rick loved everything about the south, except the food. He hated it that he couldn't find a decent deli, a good italian restaurant, and most importantly, a good cheesesteak sub. So, here I am, got my best friend and Marisa(my girlfriend at the time), bitchin' about food. Like every day. Non stop. So, after awhile, we just quit going out to eat and just buy stuff from the grocery store and make what we wanted. Rick would buy those frozen steakums in bulk, go to a deli and get some kind of white cheese or provolone, and hard sub rolls. He would start grilling the onions, sometimes with mushrooms, then the shaved steak, and finally the cheese. He would then shove all this into the toasted grilled roll. Man, I thought they were great, but Rick would be pissed because it didn't taste like the ones in Philly. Every week, he would get all the stuff, and every week, he would be cussin' because he couldn't quite get it right. He finally gave it up, but I was so addicted to those cheesesteak subs, I started making them for us once a week. Our junior year, Rick invited me to Philly for the summer. His older brother owned a moving company, so we worked for him and lived at his parent's house. On the drive up, all Rick could talk about was eating. For ten long hours, Finally, we arrive in south Philly and he heads right for this greasy joint in what looked like a seedy part of town. Guys wearing wife beater tees, hangin' out on the street corners, drinking beer and smoking cigs. Old beat up buildings in need of paint and dingy lights, and wet dirty sidewalks. Nothing this country boy was used to. Finally, we duck into this old deli that you could smell two blocks away. Two big guys behind the grill with stained aprons and dingy tees. Rick holds up two fingers, greasy guy starts slapping meat, onions and cheese into a sub roll, wraps them up and shoves them in a bag. We pay, grab a couple of beers and sit on the hood of the car to eat our subs. And that night was when I finally found out what Rick has been talking about for two straight years. That was the best sub I have ever tasted in my life. The meat was better, the cheese was cheesier, and the bread was out of this world. Even the onions tasted so much better. I knew from then on, I could never grill another steakum sub. I finally came up for air, and Rick looked at me, smiled and winked. He knew he had me hooked. For life. That was 1983. Marisa has her quest to find a decent NY Pizza in the south. Mine was the ultimate Philly Cheesesteak. I have tried many a cheesesteak only to be disappointed. Only one that came close was Sonny's, bit they closed down a few years ago. Then I came across Philly's in Summerville. Being disappointed so many times, I didn't get my hopes up when I entered Philly's in 1997. Yeah, I already heard the stories, mom and pop are from Philly and had their own shop in South Philly. Yeah, they been doing this for over 40 years, blah, blah blah. Small place on the corner of a shopping strip. As you enter, it looks like a mom and pop store. To the left they have coolers and deli stuff. To the right, a small dining area with a few tables. Quaint. As you walk towards the counter where you order, there'a a giant menu on the right with different cheesesteaks. I ordered the small 8" Philly original. This comes with white american cheese and grilled onions. I get it to go so if I take a bite and don't like it, I can just chuck it in the nearest garbage bin and be on my way. I waited about 5 mins, my order was ready. I walked outside, sat on the hood of my car and unwrapped my sub. It passed the smell test. The sub roll felt hot, soft, but a little firm. The cheese was oozing, plenty of steak and grilled onions. I bit into my cheesesteak sub...... and it was 1983 all over again. Perfect. I was in South Philly. I found my Holy Grail. I 've been a loyal customer of Philly's for 11 years, and have never been dissatisfied. You can find me there on Wed or Thurs after the lunch crowd has cleared out. Yes, they have other stuff. Their chicken cheesesteak sub is awesome, meatball sub is great, and sometimes I'll get the Soparano... a hoagie with genoa salami, capicola, proscuitto, pepperoni, peppers and vinegar. All their hoagies are great because they make their own breads. Their lasagne is good also.( But, I wouldn't dare say that to Marisa.) If you are looking for authentic, Philly Cheesesteak, the best in SC, you gotta try this place. ilovephillys.com

Being a Keystoner myself I was hoping to find a place to quell my urge for a steak sandwich every now and again. This fits the bill as far as the Lowcounty is concerned. They make a decent sandwich, the service is slow because it is fresh made. And the best part? They have a fair selection of Tastykakes, which anyone from the Tri-State can appreciate. Are they like a real Philly? No. The bread is not the same, (it can't be without Schuylkill Soup) and its not the same ambiance as South Philly. But they try, and they are from PA and do an admirable job. So I say the next time you are over by Ladson and Dorchester, check them out. It might hold you over until you can get back to PA.

Oh. My. GOD. How amazing is this little place? The cheese steaks are off the chain. The flavor is amazing. The other Italian foods are awesome as well. This is a good find in Summerville and the prices are fair. I agree the service isn't awesome. But they have these poor girls doing about 20 things at once. If you need service for this restaurant you're being too picky. Eat your food and hush, what else do you need besides a refill...?

  • Matthew L.

Wow. Not sure how I forgot Philly's. Best cheesesteaks I've had in Charleston, hands-down. I'd go so far as to say they're better than anywhere else I've had them (besides Philadelphia, of course).

  • Chris D.

Excellent food, excellent service, and a corner diner feel. I don't think you can go wrong here. The menu is expansive, yet not overwhelming. The food feels authentic and home cooked. You don't get the fast frozen flash microwaved sensation that comes with some chain restaurants. Do yourself a favor, if you're hungry (why else would you read this?) and give this place a go!

Best cheesesteaks in town. Excellent service. Have been coming here for a couple of years now and have never had a bad experience. The food is always good.
