I visited this place by the suggestion of my sister who now lives around the Charleston area because she thought I would enjoy the theme of the restaurant. I didn't just like it, I loved it! The theme is right up my alley; the walls are decked out with Edgar Allen Poe art and everything, I even wanted to pick up a shirt, but I was short on cash, unfortunately. It was really busy when we went to go eat (even being a Tuesday evening), and you seat yourself and whatnot. Our server was pretty cool and we got all of our food quickly for how busy it was. I got their black bean burger and made it a signature burger with their amontillado burger, sans cheese (so it came with guacamole and pico de gallo), with a side of fries. The burger itself was incredible, and it tasted fresh and handmade, kind of crumbly, but that's how I like my veggie burgers; if they're too compact it leads me to think it was just a frozen patty, you see. The fries were a bit greasy, but they were perfectly crunchy. Anytime I'm in the area I'm going back!
Made a stop here while on vacation... Based on a recommendation from a friend, we chose Poe's for a late lunch while traveling through. Quick rundown: - a true tavern look, with a nice bar and spacious seating. - a good variety on the menu, from salads to burgers to seafood dishes - very friendly staff - good, quick service, with excellent follow-up Our group chose burgers and fish tacos. The burgers were two fingers thick and cooked exactly to order, and the fish tacos (two variations) had a wonderful burst of citrus and peppery favors. Cold beers rounded out the meal. For my money, this place was extremely good value. For my enjoyment and relaxation, this spot is a must-stop!
*****Disclaimer: 5 stars based on the burgers (you should really just come for the burgers), 4 stars based on other items (appetizers and fish tacos were good, but I wouldn't come for just them)***** This was my second trip to Charleston and the second time I've gone out of my way to grab a burger at Poe's in Sullivan's island. Needless to say, the burgers are the bomb diggity. I've had the Black Cat and Tell-Tale Heart, both are delicious. Fries are solid as well. This is your spot if you're a burger lover. Will I come back here a third time the next time I'm in Charleston? You bet your half-pound angus beef patty ground in-house I will!

As a gelato conniseuer I can confidently say this place ROCKS. Whether you're a fan of more traditional flavors (lemon sorbet, coffee), or something a little more wild (cinnamon) they are sure to have something that suits your taste buds! They also have cool swag for sale here as well as at the Obstinate Daughter (restauraunt upstairs owned by the same owner). The olive oil and sea salt gelato is my all time favorite! At least give it a sample!
The only "ice cream" place in that area. They call it gelato, but it's not. Not bad, but it's not gelato and it's pricey. Get the homemade gelato/ice cream sandwiches from the freezer. they are great!!
Are there words to describe how much I loved this place? No. Do I have to try? Yes. I am a HUGE fan of gelato, sorbet, ice cream, and pretty much every other frozen dessert, and since my sister was in town and we were headed to the beach, we decided to check out Beardcat's. BEST DECISION EVER. While I agree with others that they could have used some signage labeling the flavors, the staff was more than happy to explain each one and let us taste them. I ended up getting the grapefruit sorbet and the chocolate gelato in a fresh waffle cone. Odd combination right? WRONG! It was fantastic. I was really surprised with their sorbets - the grapefruit and the lime blew my socks off. We went pretty late, around 9:00, and the staff were still upbeat, which I really enjoyed. There wasn't a line at all, and I really liked that the staff weren't focused on cleaning and shutting down everything quite yet. They don't offer a million flavors, but the ones they have they do right! They also have pre-packaged cakes and containers if you need to pop in and grab a quick dessert. They are located within walking distance of Station 21 (I think that's the right number), so it'd be a great date to grab a snack and head down to the water. I can't wait to go back!

Visited with my husband, toddler and infant last week. The interior is cute and they were very nice. Great kid's menu, but the food was pretty blah. Guac tasted like mashed avocado only-- no seasoning. Our lunches were fine, but nothing to go back for. And oddly, at the end of the meal, our server asked how we were "doing the check today." I assumed he meant cash or credit, but he was asking if we needed separate checks. Seeing as how we were a mom/dad/two-kid group, it was the weirdest thing we've ever been asked in a restaurant.
Our server was excellent. He was very attentive, was able to make suggestions and answer questions, and seemed friendly and laid back. He was perfect for a beach-side casual establishment. The food was ok. It arrived fast and was tasty enough that we'd be happy to visit again. But there is plenty of room for improvement on the food. First, tortillas make or break a taco. I'm from Texas (recently moved here), and all the truly great taco places in TX are making their own tortillas - not buying factory-made ones that NEVER taste anything like a fresh homemade one. Having fresh tortillas would elevate Taco Mamacita to a whole new level. As-is, the unheated factory tortillas make the end product taste like Taco Bell. But the prices are affordable enough that the overall value remains ok, and with such great service, I'm happy to bring the family again. They're very kid-friendly, too which is always a plus for those of us with kids.
Met a friend here for a beer and we managed to dig through two full plates of chips with their "original" salsa. The chips were nice and large, perfect for scooping. Not greasy at all. Beer choices were decent and unusual. I had a solid local witbier - White Thai. Service was excellent. Sit outside if it's warm enough. Plenty of scenery walking by! As with most spots in this part of the Island, parking can be a real pita. I don't have any advice for ya there, other than be sure to park legally. Sorry!

I went tonight for dinner. I read reviews a I heard from a friend that the food was good. I sat at the bar with my boyfriend. We ordered drinks and while we were ordering out food from one bartender, another bartender was using a shaker to make a drink. He must not have made sure the shaker was sealed tight because me and my boyfriend got splashed with the drink he was making. He turned around and looked but he did not apologize. The bartender taking our order said sorry, but the one who actually splashed up did not. We ordered the pretzel bread to share, I ordered the shrimp and grits and my boyfriend ordered the swordfish. My shrimp and grits were pretty good. The pretzel bread was delicious, but my boyfriends swordfish was small and a little dry. Not to mention it was 29 dollars for his plate, which was not worth the price at all. The best part of the meal was the pretzel bread, but the entrees, in my opinion, were overpriced.
What a great place!!! Their salad person has to be the best in the business. Great salads. Salt is as good as it gets.
Everyone at my table of 11 seemed to enjoy their meals. Especially their shrimp and grits. Though, I think their menu changes monthly so don't go with that expectation. The burger was yummy and huge (cooked how I asked) and the fries were standard. Yet, delicious. My only complaint is the server was kind of rude. I guess she thought she was too good or that we weren't good enough. I hate this mentality. Especially when I get to decide the gratuity. I would recommend this place! They do offer free valet. Handy when it's a busy night and you can't find street parking. You can take your key from the guy and/or see you car from the restaurant if you aren't a valet-type person. Would come here again! Also, beware if you aren't the adventurous type when it comes to food there isn't much for you. Like I said the menu changes. There is plenty of seafood and they are happy to take or add things to your meal. I ended up with a hamburger without the mentioned fontal (cheese).
