We seem to always ride by the Sugar'n Spice and finally stopped in there for lunch last week....and I can't wait to go back. We were afraid when we saw the "a plenty" plates since the Beacon really disappointed with super greasy fries and sloppy burgers last time. I was all set to get a couple of hot dogs until we got to the ordering window and I saw the grill full of burgers. I quickly changed my mind to the cheeseburger (a plenty) and a tea. My brother in-law ordered the same thing and normally I would make fun of him but not this time. Our burgers were perhaps the best that I have had in years (sorry Mr. Bessinger). Actually everything on the plate was near perfect. The cole slaw and onion rings were just awesome! I was stunned by the slaw...which does not happen very often. The tea was great and all the people that work there were super nice. There was not a crowd when we got there but the dining area had almost completely filled up while we were there. I cannot believe that no one has ever mentioned this place before and would not even dare mention the Beacon in the same breath. I can't wait until next time....

Sugar N Spice provides a solid meal in Sparkle City. The Souvlaki and the charbroiled chicken are pretty amazing. The meat is wonderfully flavored and juicy. The cheeseburger is really good as well-- especially with chili! The onion rings are fresh, crunchy, and delicious. Overall, it's a good price for great food served by a friendly staff. I'd highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

One of the very few drive ins here in Spartanburg that still serves good food. I got take out and had the roast beef sandwich and onion rings. The meat wasn't overcooked and the onion rings were seasoned just right. The service was very friendly. I pray they won't change anything about with their food.

Love the Roast Beef sandwich and onion rings. Sandwich has great flavor and onion rings are homemade and crispy!

I take back my previous review. I'm pretty sure my daughter got food poisoning from their chicken salad. That is the only thing different that she ate from what we ate and she spent the next day and a half vomiting. I can't in good conscience go back to this restaurant after our experience.

Went here for lunch. It is a great classic local burger place. The prices were great and the burgers were good. I would go back and try other items.

This is my favorite dive. Love the jumbo cheeseburger a-plenty. Friendly folks and old drive-in atmosphere. No frills but great food.

We stopped in here on a lark after seeing the sign. They don't offer carside service anymore but you can still park under the remenants of their Jetsons style carport. It's not in the best shape so do so at your own peril. The food was outstanding, the roast beef sandwhich was made with beef that had actually been roasted and sliced that day. The jumbo cheeseburger more than lived up to it's name and when combined with the aplenty helping of fries and onion rings left me in a true food coma. More than enough for two people, this spread set us back a mere $12. I would highly reccomend the Sugar -n- Spice to anyone and would eat here over the Beacon any day of the week.

The roast beef sandwich was awesome! The onion rings were huge and plentiful, but I think I should have gone with the fries. I had a few rings that were that papery outer ring of the onion and they were a little too oily for me. The outside drive up area and the vintage sign are awesome. If you order your meal "a plenty" you get fries, onion rings, and cole slaw in addition to your sandwich. The owner took our order, made our drinks, and took our money. I like to see an owner so involved in the business. He was really friendly and seemed genuinely happy to see us. The original articles all over the dinning room are pretty cool. The lot full of classic cars and servers on roller skates. Ahh, the good old days and they haven't changed at Sugar n Spice and I hope they never do.

We stopped by based on it's positive reviews from fellow Yelpers. Glad we did! This is pure Americana: drive-in bays, huge portions, tasty comfort food, good ol' boys eye-hatin' us out-of-towners. You place your order with what I assume was the owner and then gave your payment to what I assume was his wife and co-owner. Both were friendly as hell and made me proud to be American (even though I think they were both Greek?) Proud to an Earthling, then. Order the roast beef-a-plenty. Mind the slaw. Tip with smiles and "ma'ams."

Roast Beef Sandwich + side of onion rings. Possibly the best thing you can eat in Spartanburg for the money. Not sure about the other things. I have been to the 'Spice probably 50 times over the past 25 years and i have never ordered anything else:)

Stopped in again yesterday to grab a quick lunch. Cheesburger with, fries and a sweet tea. For less than $6, I was yet again satisfied....except they had MSNBC on the dining room tv. ;)

I was a bit disappointed. I had heard nothing but wonderful things about Sugar and Spice and decided to try their seafood plate. I think I got scallops and shrimp. They were fried the same time as the fish and were so overdone that it was like eating rubber balls. The fish was excellent and the service was really good. I will try them again and next time I won't get seafood.

I found myself in Spartanburg around lunch time on Monday, and decided to visit the Sugar -n- Spice. It's been mumble-mumble years since I was last here, when my then-girlfriend was attending nearby Converse College. The place was pretty much as I (fondly) remembered it. The prices have increased a bit during my absence, but the roast beef sandwich was as tasty as before. The fries AND onion rings that come with the meal were ok, but not special. I think The Beacon does better onion rings, but it will take another trip to Spartanburg to determine if that is true. Perhaps I can compare chili-cheeseburgers at that time, as well. The sweet tea is nectar. Sugar -n- Spice is celebrating 50 years of service to Spartanburg; they must be doing something right!

Great burgers! Great fries! Great tea! What can I say, sugar and spice has it all. From the outside it looks great, and the food helps keep the vibe going. Traditional American with a few Greek favorites thrown in.

Oh my, now I regret not taking any picture of those awesome meals! I ordered fried chicken liver dinner and it was delicious. Livers were tender without any foul smell/taste and they came with fries, onion rings, and slaw. Fries were fresh & DELICIOUS!! My only complaint is slaw was kind of bland but maybe it's just my taste. Highly recommended for the ultimate roadfood experience. If you want some touristy gimmicks, go to Beacon Drive-In...but if you want something real, come dine at Sugar N Spice!!

I grew up in Spartanburg and still like to revisit Sugar 'n Spice. The place is just a landmark and never lets you down. I joke that they have the best tiny cubed ice for drinks (isn't that funny?) - and the grilled chicken sandwich with fries is my favorite. The sweet tea is great.
