School House BBQ, in the speed trap otherwise known as Scranton, SC, was where I was formally introduced to SC BBQ buffets. That first impression was so strong, it is something that I will always remember. The pork barbecue is absolutely wonderful. It is loaded with plentiful red pepper flakes and a strong vinegar based sauce so typical of eastern Carolina barbecue. The ribs are so spicy that they will burn your lips. The collards and side dishes are prepared by people that know how to properly season soul food, translation: it's delicious. There is way more seasoning than any Southern cookin' in WNC. This is not a fancy place, but what they lack in decorum they more than make up for in sheer deliciousness. If you don't mind cafeteria seating, crowds of hungry locals, and standing in line, this place is a hidden treasure. If I lived nearby, I'd eat here once a week - it is THAT good. BTW, there are usually several SC police cars parked here at lunchtime, when they take time out from generating speeding ticket revenue for the nearby towns. Definitely visit School House BBQ if you are anywhere near the area, headed to the beach, or just generally lost, but please drive the speed limit approaching this town. You'll thank me later! Cash only.

Great value and everything was very fresh. My first introduction to SC BBQ Buffet and a memorable one.

This restaurant was just okay . It was very crowded when we went on Sat. Every thing seemed like it had been sitting . The fried chicken was good. Felt chaotic . I would eat there in a pinch . Think its cool they have exchange students working.

This BBQ restaurant is delicious. I was visiting a friend in the area and she said this was a place that the locals talked about. After eating there I now understand why the locals talk about it all of the time. The food here was amazing! It is a buffet style restaurant with a lot of options. THE ONE THING THAT EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE AWARE OF IS THAT THEY ONLY TAKE CASH. The owners were the ones that were working the registar and they were very welcoming of our group and talked to us for a little bit. I would recommend this place to anyone that is in the area!

One of my favorite places to eat anywhere. Took the family there and everyone was happy. We ate everything but the oink!! The girls loved the sweet tea and Laura and I really enoyed the fried chicken. Can't wait to pass through this part of SC again. Definetely worth a visit.

When looking for vinegar BBQ, you need to go no further. As a BBQ snob its one of the few that I endorse. Great sides, great setup in the old schoolhouse. Great that the folks that help with your drinks are typically boy scouts or the church.

Railfan BBQ joint. The Schoolhouse BBQ just north of downtown Scranton is a fixed-price buffet-style barbecue restaurant with cafeteria seating in a big old wooden school house overlooking the ACL (CSX) mainline. So you can stuff yourself silly and watch trains fly by out the rear window. I stopped on a road trip and it was nice to get a "home cooked" meal instead of fast food or expensive chain restaurant meals for once. I loaded up on vegetables and went back for seconds of the BBQ, even though it is quite spicy in the vinegar department--it had me tearing up and choking at first until I realized I was eating too quickly. You can eat healthy(er) by choosing from string beans, peas, corn, rice, mashed potatoes, or load up on gravy, fried chicken (which some prefer over the BBQ), all kinds of sweets and desserts. Everything is all-you-can-eat including iced tea (Southern and unsweetened), coffee, water soft drinks, and maybe other drinks as well. Atmosphere when I was there mid-afternoon was laid back, the hostess was very friendly and accomodating. Seating is anywhere from 4-top round tables to big 8-top round tables. NOTE WELL: Schoolhouse is like a number of barbeque places that only open Thursday through Sunday, so beware on other days. Also, they only accept cash, so leave home without your American Express. I sat all the way in the back of the great room and watched a man named E560 and Q493 go flying by on the CSX A-line in the short time I was there. Not too shabby! All in all, quite an enjoyable meal and diversion.

Another southern style BBQ buffet. $6 per person. Many items on the buffet. Great atmosphere in an old town. Located in an old school house. The group I went with all enjoyed it. The pulled pork was a little too vinegary and they didn't have hash. Well they did but it was liver and looked like blended earthworms and tasted much like it too.

Usually the BBQ Sandwiches are very good, but the last two weeks I bought Sandwiches which had a long string of fat and what look like veins of the pig. I do not plan to eat there again after seeing this twice in my Sandwiches which cost $3., UGGH! Someone needs to check this!
