I am visiting Orangeburg for a week for work and haven't seen much besides the standard fast food that you can get anywhere (and is awful). I saw El Jarocho and decided to give it a try. I love mexican food, and I wasn't disappointed. Very authentic! I have had better but not by much, this is probably the best restaurant in Orangeburg. Great tacos, friendly staff. When I went the first time they didn't have fresh bread so I skipped the torta, I went back later in the week and got one and it was so so good. Also tried the enchiladas and they were smothered in mole and onions. YUM. Watch out, they don't take debit/credit.

you have to remember you are in a fast food mecca here in O'burg....and so this mom and pop taqueria is a welcome respite from the usual burgers and fries and chicken fare that the chains pop out. CLEAN...bright...friendly servers and the food is terrific. Highest recommendation! Huge selection of Mexican food...authentic and delicious...don't pass this one up!

No, there is not something wrong with your ears. That chorus of heavenly voices that you hear when you enter exists. You have discovered true, authentic Mexican food. The only reason more five star reviews do not exist is because those who have dined here have left this plane of existence for a higher one. I'm from Southern California. I've been dying for a real tamale. I finally found it. I now live in Atlanta. Driving from there just fr these tamales is worth it. Stop here if you want to eat great Mexican food.

Wow! I am SoCal born & raised - we miss delicious authentic Mexican food, stopped here based on the reviews esp. the couple SoCal people reviews, and this was - our experience anyway - neither authentic nor delicioso. I had a lengua burrito (which was listed as the kind where only the meat is inside & everything else is sitting on top - not my cup of tea, so I asked her to put everything inside, nothing on top/hand-held, and to add cilantro & onions to it). When it arrived it was SUPER small - like a child's size burrito off the children's menu, literally. No cilantro inside. Small tortilla with a couple tomatoes & onions & shreds of lettuce. And the lengua was in ultra-finely minced cubes(!) & hardly any in it. Authentic? California? I don't think so!! Hubby got 3 tacos which were nothing great comparably, but were decent. Sons shared a chicken burrito with rice & beans - tasted theirs & was pretty flavorless. Daughter got sopa de pollo (chicken soup) (which did have cilantro so know they have some in the restaurant lol! ;)). It seemed lacking a lot, & not much flavor. Asked for hot sauces & both green & red we're pretty watery & bland... Considering a child's plate is $3.50 and comes with extra sides & a drink, my child's size burrito should have been $3. It was $6. Service was reeeeeally slow, and it wasn't too busy either... This was a Friday at prime lunch time. We were not attended to too much & was very hard/slow to track down a waitress. They're just a small place & a nice family I'm sure, so I don't want to slam them too hard... Yet I think 5 stars & the "California" thing is a clear & utter misrepresentation of this restaurant and want people to be aware. Oh, also cash only. No credit/debit cards. And parking is extremely limited. Oh, also, it took an extreeemely long time for our food to arrive. Seemed as if they only had one cook. We were all super hungry by the time it finally came! Best to call it in early if you're going to eat here.

Had stopped in with my best friends for a quick meal was really disappointed in the service the waitress was having to do some sort of phone cards while we SAT and waited 20 minutes for tea. We finally got served at hour and a half later but the food was sub par..and the next day I was sick . although I can't prove the food made me sick. I am from San Diego and I'm quite familiar with authentic Mexican food and believe me this food was not authentic. Of course it's been about a year since I've visited there maybe hopefully the food has gotten better I don't know

My wife and I are from Southern California and have been missing authentic Mexican food since we left. Wife found this place on our way home from vacation and we tried it on a whim. Cash only, phone cards, money wiring services = legit. We had carne asada tacos, pastor tacos, pollo tacos, and chorizo tacos, all were great. Highly recommend!

Delicioso! While in Orangeburg on business, I stepped into this little gem of a restaurant for some take-out and boy was I glad I did! While looking over the menu, I noticed that they have multiple specials going on throughout the week. One of which is a lunch special consisting of $1.50 soft tacos. Not a bad deal. I have a weakness for traditional Mexican tacos so I ordered one each of the chorizo, al pastor et pollo tacos. They came wrapped in a warm corn tortilla with a healthy amount of cilantro and fresh onions on top and were served with a spicy salsa roja on the side. The al Pastor taco was my favorite, followed closely by the pollo. Since chips and salsa are a must at any Mexican restaurant, I ordered this as well. The salsa was homemade pico de gallo with chunks of fresh tomatoes, cilantro, onions and chili peppers. This was served alongside mouthwatering fried tortilla chips that tasted like they had just come out of the fryer. This place is an absolute must try if you're in the area. PS - As mentioned in a previous review, this is a cash only operation. They do not accept debit or credit cards.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
