My husband and I and my extended family enjoy Tom's. We will stop in for the lunch special and always get fast and friendly service. The Cheerwine sauce is excellent. We always get extra sauces to keep on hand at home. Tom's mustard sauce is the only "yellow" bbq sauce I will eat. The clincher, though, was back in June. I was having a surprise party for my husband and the original plan for food fell through at the last minute. I called Tom's and spoke to Tom personally. He accepted my last minute large order, even correcting my math by assuring me I did not need as much as I had thought. He was right! Everyone raved about the flavor and tenderness of the pork and I purchased it at an extremely reasonable price. Of course he could have made more money with a larger order, but he put his customer first and I am very appreciative!

I'm a little aggrivated today after visiting Tom's. It's unfortunate that I haven't felt compelled to write a review for this place until today. They are offering a sandwich, drink, and side special for $5 which is actually what brought me in the door (good deal). I have been here probably more than 10 times because the pork is good and it's fast, but its been a little while since I last visited. This new special likely exists to increase business due to construction. I ordered my meal, paid, and handed my punch card (buy so many and get the nth sandwich free) to the cashier. She asked the other woman if she can punch the card on the special, and she said "No." Seriously? Like I said... I've been here numerous times, and many of those times I have forgotten about the punch card completely. However, this time I acutally remember and I get denied? A little disappointing to say the least....really rubbed me the wrong way. Did I miss the terms and conditions (obviously they don't exist; they are not listed any where) for the punch card? It has never been a problem when I remember to use it. Anyways, as usual....the pork is good and so are the hush puppies. I tried the slaw for the first time and it was bland. If I come back I wouldn't order the slaw. The sides are mediocre here (at best). I'll probably go back to my other go-to BBQ place next time, even if they don't have a $5 special. The sides are better.

The smoker outside smelled divine. I was sure that we were in for a great meal. I ordered the ribs and my husband did, too. The hushpuppies were fantastic. The macaroni and cheese was better than average and the green beans came from a can. Hubs reported that his coleslaw was just okay; fries were the same. So, on to the ribs... they were smoked, but I couldn't say when. They had been refrigerated or frozen and reheated in the microwave. They were delivered to us still cold, so the staff took them back to the kitchen and proceeded to microwave them again. She said that's the way they always did it because they didn't sell many ribs. They didn't even bring us a clean plate with the re-re-heated ribs. I was so disappointed in the execution of the meal. I might try it again to sample the pulled pork. Maybe

Iama Critic Rating - Tom's Barbecue - 3 Stars 1143 Woodruff Road, Greenville, SC Overall: In our never ending pursuit of the finest BBQ in the Upstate, we search for and visit every BBQ dive and dinner that uses a smoker, and even some who only pretend to. So naturally we had to try Tom's Barbecue. Tom's is smack dab in the middle of the hustle and bustle that is Woodruff Road in Greenville. Tom's even has a small smoker out in the parking lot and it smells mighty good. But we have learned that doesn't necessarily mean they actually use it, so we went inside and ordered a couple of items. The Service - 0 Stars (0%) Tom's doesn't really offer wait service. We received more attention than normal as it was obvious we were there to review the restaurant. As such we felt a tip was optional and we did not choose to leave one. Our guest check listed a server, but we never received any sort of service. We typically provide 20% or more for 5 star service on the pre-tax portion of the bill, 18% for 4, 15% for 3, 12% for 2 and 0% for 1 star service. The Food: $7.50 Jumbo Pork Sandwich - 3 Stars We ordered this sandwich with fries and hushpuppies. The sandwich was served on a nice sesame seed bun that was not mashed, which is our minimum requirement for a three star sandwich. The pork itself was really tasty but had little "bark" and not much smoky flavor. It seemed almost "too fresh", like it hadn't been in the smoker long enough. The fries were as boring and average as they come. Our guest check says we ordered "2 Hushpuppies" and sure enough we received exactly two rather ordinary hushpuppies. $13.00 Texas Brisket Plate - 3 Stars This brisket plate was ordered with macaroni and cheese and baked BBQ beans. However the entree also came with exactly two more hushpuppies. The macaroni and the beans were good three star items. The brisket was very good, perhaps even four stars, but for thirteen bucks you simply deserve more! This price is a buck and a half more than the Smokin Pig's brisket plate which comes with more meat, two sides, a fabulous yeast roll and a pepper. The Smoking Pig's five star brisket also blows Tom's brisket away. Now don't get me wrong, Tom's brisket is good, and the smoky flavor is obvious. But for thirteen dollars it just can't match the "Flavor Value" of the best BBQ in the area. Foam Picnic Plates: Another problem is the foam picnic plates. Whenever I see foam picnic plates in a restaurant I know exactly what I am going to get. I am gonna receive an entire entree crammed on a single 10" picnic plate. This is fine it we are talking about a sandwich and dry condiments like fries, hushpuppies or onion rings. But if the entree is ordered with wet sides like BBQ beans or coleslaw, it all intermingles and ruins the flavors of individual items. Using these cheap plates means that my expensive brisket, which I am paying a premium for, is gonna taste like beans or coleslaw mayo. Good BBQ joints provide these wet sides, on the side! Yes it all ends up in the same place, but before it does it has to go past my taste buds, and my taste buds OBJECT! Picnic plates are fine for Uncle Bob's BBQ Bash, but at a restaurant, I want my food separated. Total Bill: $22.14 for two people including tax and water. Final Thoughts: So just how much is any picnic plate of food worth? Well believe it or not Five Star Restaurant Reviews has a formula for that, that we feel works pretty well. No entree should cost more than $1.00 per inch in diameter as a general rule. That means a 4" cup of soup should be no more than $4.00. And a picnic plate should cost no more than $10.00. Of course quality and quantity makes a difference, but it is a pretty good general rule. Of course you could just skip all these cost per plate worries and simply drive to Mutt's BBQ, where for the same price you can dirty as many foam plates, foam bowls and plastic forks as you want, eating off a fabulous four star BBQ buffet.

I tried the pork plate with Mac and cheese and sweet potato crunch both sides were good. It was evident that they took pride in the sides and didn't just add them to make the menu longer. The mac and cheese was made from real cheese not sauce. The sweet potatoes might have been from a can buy were not bad. Lots of sauces to choose from which is a plus I tried 5 of them and the Jakes sauce was probably my favorite but the mustard and north carolina were also good. I prefer the pork a little smokier but it's wasn't bad. I'd eat there again.

Just visiting the area and found this place through a Groupon ad. Great find. Small hole in the wall type place with great food and value...

I wish I could mark no stars. I can see that people have had a different experience with this place. And, I went today for lunch to Tom's barbecue because it's one of the very few places in the city that serves brisket BBQ. Unfortunately, the brisket plate for lunch was expensive (13 bucks a plate) and the brisket wasn't fresh. It was clearly microwaved just before serving and it was just bad. If I wanted microwaved bbq, I'd have gone to a grocery store frozen food section. In addition, the sides weren't great either. The sweet potato crunch had no crunch on it. Between my wife and I we spent 30 bucks for just awful food on our planned valentine's day celebration. Never gain.

This is my kind of Barbecue. Simple food prepared hot! Great lunch spot. They also have a great selection of Sauces. The line moved quick with just thee people working in the back. They were nice And didn't have to wait long for the food to arrive. Overall a great experience for me. I'll be back.

Best BBQ I've had in Greenville/Spartanburg area. Pulled pork is crazy good. Be sure to hit it before 3pm - that's when they close.

We used Tom's for catering and could not have been more satisfied with everything. We ordered through Tom himself and he was extremely helpful and generous to help us create a menu. He refused to charge us until after our party and said he would only charge us if we were satisfied. I need to cater meals quite often and anytime we do BBQ we will not use anyone else. First class all the way, not to mention, fantastic food and a variety of tasty sauces. Thanks Tom, see you soon!

I was asked if I liked BBQ by a local today. This turned out to be the most important conversation I have had today. Not only is this place awesome it was the best BBQ I had in a long time. "The Good" - The food is made with love and with pride and it shows. - I ordered the lunch special of a Carolina Pork Shoulder Sandwich with Two sides and a drink. I opted for the fries and the baked beans. - A large selection of sauces, I tried the Cheerwine Sauce (obviously made with Cheerwine and for my Yankee friends its Cherry Soda) and Hot. Both were delicious and are available by the gallon. - The fact that he had a decent stream of people filtering in after lunch. - The people behind the counter were polite and patient, very cool. - They Cater and the catering menu looks pretty extensive. - Go Phils! "The Meh" - Nothing meh.. it was a great lunch. "The Bad" - Again nothing bad to comment on.

Stopped on the way from Atlanta to NC. Pulled pork was excellent, and the choice of 7 sauces was really fun. Something for everyone whether you like vinegar, mustard, spicy, or the exotic sweet cheerwine sauce. Sides were a mixed bag. I liked the baked beans a lot, but the slaw, green beans, and mac & cheese were more typical of fast food bbq. Unfortunately they had run out of the house specialty sweet potato crunch. Oh well, next time.

Omg the baked beans are amazing. They aren't too sweet and have an incredible smoky flavor. The sweet potato crunch is an original and insane! Mashed sweet potatoes topped with brown sugar and pecans. Yummm. The baked mac and cheese was average. The fries were pretty terrible. Pulled pork was average and a tiny bit dry. Lots of sauces to choose from. Hot mustard and New North Carolina were great. Jake's Sauce had a nice cherry BBQ flavor and not as overpowering with the cherry taste as the Cheer Wine sauce.

Great BBQ, great prices, great service. I have purchased bbq by the pound here many times for events. You can't beat the price, but it's also the best bbq around. Their hushpuppies are good too. The best mac & cheese and good banana pudding. My only complaint about this place is that there are not more locations.

For openers, as you pull into this Greenville strip center you have a choice of three doors... The one to the right opens to a place that buys gold, the one on the left was to a shop that sells aquarium stuff and the door in the middle is to Tom's BBQ - the best choice given we were hungry for good 'cue. The smoker in the parking lot spewed an unending spiral of hickory smoke - a virtual aphrodisiac for barbecue lovers... the experience inside failed to meet hopes or expectations ... The ribs were obviously smoked and then oven baked(and kept in the oven until ordered), and came to the table smoking (literally) hot - meaning they had been cooked one too many times. The taste was that of stew meat that could only be disguised by your choice of seven sauces (more about that later). The chicken came with a peppery rub but also tasted oven baked. Not having tried the pulled pork or brisket, we identified three of the side dishes as being exceptional: the pork skins or rinds (depending where you're from), the sweet potato crunch and the apples. The rinds were light with real flavor that could be made even better with a few shots of Tom's hottest sauce. The sweet potato crunch seemed to be a mash of regular sweet potatoes with a sugar glaze finish and a few pecans, delicious, while the apples, swimming in a deep, sweet sauce, almost compensated, by themselves, for the poor barbecue. The Brown Shoe Gourmet mentioned the availability of seven sauces, the most unique of which is Tom's Cheerwine sauce... a sauce whose main ingredient is clearly Cheerwine soda (or 'pop' depending upon your geography).... it is unique and worth a shot. The proprietor, Tom, was on hand during our visit and certainly has a welcoming staff and an eat-off-the-floor clean shop; but what he does not have, or did not have when we visited, was exceptional barbecue. And that's a shame because that's what we paid for and were hoping for.

Don't be worried about the outside decor. The inside is very clean. The BBQ is stellar! I recommend the pulled pork hotdog.

Smokers in the parking lot are always a good sign and NO BUFFET!!!! The lady at the front counter was very helpful and friendly. I ordered a small portion of ribs and chicken with green beans and sweet potato crunch (basically mashed sweets with pecans on top). Most importantly, everything is made in-house and they take pride in what they serve. The chicken was chopped breast meat, nice and moist, though it did need some more time in the smoker. They have about 6-7 different sauces including one made with Cheerwine, which was really sweet and not my taste. My favorite was the Hot Mustard sauce as the I found the others had too much sugar for me. The ribs were tender and nicely charred but they also needed more time in the smoker. The owner tells me that he smokes them for 2 hours and then finishes them off in the oven. They were good but not great. The best thing was the fresh fried pork rinds which the nice lady gave me complimentary (I just asked if they were homemade and she cooked up a bowl for me). These were excellent, arriving to the table still crackling like Rice Krispies. Yum. Sweet potato stuff was very tasty while the green beans were your typical canned green beans that you see in zillions of places. Overall, a good experience, though I still haven't found the SC barbeque nirvana that I am looking for.
