Iama Critic Rating - Steak 'n Shake - 2 Stars 499 Congaree Road, Greenville, SC Our Experience: You know the old saying, "When the cat's away they mice will screw around and serve really crappy food"? Yea, me neither, but I got a firsthand experience of it just the other day when I visited Steak 'n Shake. Mind you this is the same Steak 'n Shake I have twice rated four stars. I don't take four stars ratings lightly. A four stars rating means the restaurant serves some of the best available food for their price range, and Steak 'n Shake used to be worthy of such a lofty critique. Nothing disappoints a critic more than a restaurant that takes a dive after we give them a wonderful review. All you have to do is look at our photos and see how far they have fallen! But we now stand corrected! Steak 'n Shake is now a two stars dump! Me and my two guest critics walked into Steak 'n Shake at 9pm on a Sunday and the place was empty, except for a large plethora of employees. I thought "Service isn't going to be an issue tonight." But I was horrifically mistaken. I have never seen so many employees completely uninterested in doing their jobs. But they sure had no problem with chit chat amongst themselves while completely ignoring the task at hand! I ordered bacon cheese fries and a bowl of chili as an appetizer to be mixed together, and 25 minutes later we still had nothing but drinks on the table. The chili, if you could call it that, arrived first, the fries arrived after our meal was essentially over. I watched as our burgers were cooked and then sat around for ten minutes before they were served. Even the hotdog arrived looking like it was cooked and left to shrivel under a heat lamp for half an hour. I am sorry but I thought the purpose of a restaurant was to prepare and serve great food to satisfied customers, not to pay a bunch of kids to treat my special guest critics like they were high school chumps. That is the fastest way I know to destroy a restaurants reputation. My critic friends wanted to destroy this place with reviews on all the major site, but I convinced them to refrain and follow our standard of "Yelp only" reviews. The Service - 2 Stars (17% tip) The service we received was a truly pathetic display of "I don't give a rat's butt about my job". Our waitress did little more than fill our glasses. We had to request missing order items three times. She was not attentive, helpful or social. Well at least she wasn't toward me and my guests. She however spent a great deal of time sitting and chatting with some college kids at another table a few feet from our table. For her pathetic effort we provided an extremely overgenerous tip of 17% $5.00. However if I owned this restaurant I would be cleaning house of a few useless personnel. We typically provide 20% or more for 5 star service on the pre-tax portion of the bill, 18% for 4, 15% for 3, 12% for 2 and 0% for 1 star service. The Food: Simply take everything good I ever said about Steak 'n Shake's food and throw it out. This bunch couldn't cook a decent hotdog if they knew how to boil water! Side of Coleslaw - 1 Star This stuff was purple! Why? Because it was made 12 hours before it was served to me. Slimy and Gross! $2.99 Chili - 1 Star There is more meat in my dog's food than in this horrific chili flavored soup. I would say more but this chili flavored bowl of bean soup isn't worth the effort. $4.79 Bacon Cheese Fries - 2 Stars Ordered first, served last, so it was kinda pointless by then. $5.29 Jalapeno Burger - 1 Stars The meat on this burger was pounded so thin it was the thickness of cheese! Literally three ounces tops! Ridiculous! Loses another star for poor value! $3.99 Triple Steak Burger - 3 Stars This burger is almost like what we used to get at Steak 'n Shake. But who gives a hoot when everything else sucks. $3.99 American Foot Long - 2 Stars When did they cook this hotdog.... yesterday? Looked like my grandma's skin after ninety years of sunbathing NUDE on the beach! Yea, not a pretty picture! $3.49 Strawberry Shake - 3 Stars By the time this shake arrived no one at the table was in the mood to celebrate with dessert! I was in the mood to go back in the kitchen and bean a few high school drop-outs with it! Total Bill: $36.45 for three adults including tax, a ridiculously over-generous tip and two $2.29 soda fountain drinks. Final Thoughts: To go from four stars to two, wow that is an insane drop. The next time I go to this Steak 'n Shake I expect to see an entirely different crew. Or maybe the owner ought to send me a PRIVATE message and I will gladly come over and remind his overpaid crew what the heck employment is for. Either way, it will be a long time before I could convince my critic friends to set foot into a Steak 'n Shake again, and I would not suggest that you do so either.

I must start with I love their burgers. Thin, flavorful and tasty. So maybe I'm biased. Where else can you get a burger and fries for 4 bucks. My wife and I took our grandkids (13 & 14). Maybe the kids menus were not needed, but the hats were fun! We all had the specials. Yep. I'm a pig so I then had another. The burgers are small and thin but oh so tasty. Everyone was hungry. My grandkids had another as well! Shakes were great. The waitress almost kept up with my diet coke (yep I drink a lot). The other servers didn't seem very enthusiastic, ours was ok but not great. The weird is that the blinds were down at 8.30 at night. My wife wasn't sure they were open. Oh well. It was a fun night. Too many burgers ( think 8 servings) three shakes and a soda set us back $47. I can't complain McD's is more expensive and the food tastes worse!

Went here today after Five Guys right across the street. Two very different experiences in a very short amount of time. First, as you walk in, the little vestibule or like little room where you walk into the store smells like extremely bad body odor. Secondly, as a previous review said, the service here is terrible. I noticed at least 3 servers waiting around while we were waiting on our order. Our order consisted of 2 milkshakes, something that other places like Cook Out which are much busier than this steak and shake turn out within 2-3 minutes. It took us nearly 15 minutes to get a shake and a gentleman who came in after me was given his milkshakes before me. The milkshakes themselves weren't anything special. I definitely don't think they were $3.65 worthy. Cook Out has better shakes for a better price which won't leave me waiting 15 minutes.

Cashier took up the liberty of ringing up things we didn't ask for, gave us the wrong burgers, food was cold, literally took 6-10 mins waiting at the drive-thru window to get our food. That was the worst food I've eaten in a while. She basically gave us ketchup & mustard on slimy toast. I don't recommend throwing your money away in this crap hole.

This Steak and Shake location is great. Food is cooked to order, and the staff are very friendly when placing the order and bringing out the food. The new $5 menu is a great price for good food. If you like Thousand Island dressing on your burger, try it "California Style" (my favorite).

Went here for dinner one day and the customer service was terrible. They weren't extremely crowded and they had a lot of people working at the time. Our waitress was rude from the time we sat down to the time we walked out the door. She only came to the table maybe 3 times during our meal, and one of those times was to bring us our meal. It took a good 10-15 minutes for me to get a drink refill. The food was good as always, but we ordered shakes to go and it took a good 20-25 minutes to get our shakes. I don't think our waitress wanted to be working there at all, and she only seemed to be rude to us. She practically slammed my drink down on the table one time. It was only 3 of us,so I don't understand how hard it could have been. I'm almost positive that they had our shakes made and let them sit back there cause after we started talking about getting up and just leaving without our shakes,we seemed to receive them right away. Our waitress barely said a word the whole time,so it's safe to say that she did not get a very good tip from me mostly because of her attitude, then she got disappointed when she looked at her tip amount in front of me and acted like she deserved more than I tipped her. I usually tip more than normal, but not when you are rude to me. I also went back a few weeks later and had terrible service again. We had a table of 5 and there were only like 4 more people in the entire restaurant. It's a whole other story that I'm not going to get into, but this particular Steak 'n Shake has pretty poor and rude service.

It's hard to put into words how disappointed I was with our last visit to Steak n Shake. And I do mean LAST visit. There were so many things wrong with the service and the cleanliness that the problem must be management. The restaurant was almost empty, but still no one was interested in taking our order. When someone finally wandered over, she certainly wasn't happy to be there and didn't even fake it well. The milk shakes that she brought us were not mixed well, served in cheap Styrofoam cups, and had no whipped cream or cherry like they're supposed to. 20 minutes later, still no sandwiches. Even though the restaurant was still mostly empty, there were eight tickets hanging in the window and almost no food on the grill yet. Then someone decided to mop the floor next to our table with Clorox-smelling water. That was it. We just got up and left. We will not be back.

So how do we start this reiew. We arrived at 12p on Friday, and they somewhat busy. Anyway we ordered or meal giving exact instructions how it is to be prepared Wisconsin burger, one patty, lettuce, tomatoe, onions, grilled onions pickles and cheese. What we got was somgle cheese (the wrong bun), one patty some onion. So we asked where the tomatoe was. So they brought out a tomtoe. So when we open the sandwich, there was no grilled onions. So we sent it back, and when it came, it wa still wrong. So we asked for a manager. After 5 minutes she came and apologized for the order. Claims she has been here a couple weeks. Oh well, we LOVE Steak n Shake but won't be back to the Greenville location.

Went here for lunch. For 3 lunches and 4 shakes under $30.00. The food was great. Service was also great.

Can't say I was blown away. Service was as expected. Food quality was as expected. Cleanliness of location was as expected. We don't have a reason not to visit this place again.

Greenville's Steak-n-Shake is more like Steak-n-Hate. My boyfriend and I ordered two milkshakes from the drive through and upon receiving them, noticed the cups were only half filled. After complaining to the manager (his last name was Duke) that we just wanted to be topped off accordingly, he immediately became irate and defensive. We weren't sure if it's because we were gay or he was just an unpleasant man, but he said he wasn't going to remake it which is not what we placatingly asked for. And when we said that, he became volatile and belligerent. He immediately made a scene in front of his entire staff and restaurant patrons; boisterously announcing that the "temper" in our voices was uncalled for and that we needed to leave the store. His reasoning lacked verisimilitude, as all we wanted was simply to receive what we had payed for. After my boyfriend asked for the regional managers number, whom the manager said "go ahead and call, he's my dad," he told us to "f*** off." We walked out of the store only to have the manager storm after us "on the phone with the cops" reporting us to the police, telling them of my license plate number and dress. I seriously have never, in all my days, had an experience quite like this.

Steak 'n Shake is an American Classic. Excellent burgers, fries, sides, and milkshakes. When I lived in Louisville, KY, you would see these all over the place, in Greenville we only have one. I wish we had more!

Breakfast..The pancakes were pretty good - but not having coffee ready on the weekend is a serious offense! They told me they don't make it unless someone orders it because they have to brew it every hr...so I would have to wait 5 minutes - hello at 9:30 on a sunday morning?? coffee should be ready and waiting, especially in the morning guys

Perfect late night burger, fry, and shake spot. Cost to worth it ratio: 4 (super cheap for a full service restaurant--burger is around $3) Highlights: - Burgers: In and Out-like thin but not perfectly shaped which I liked cause it feels more homemade than mass produced cookie cutter paddys. - Menu: a variety of burger items as well as breakfast and sides. I like how you can make anything a meal and choose 2 sides. - Fries: thin and long. Best when you order cheese fries and chili as sides to make your own chili cheese fries. - Shakes: thick but not so much that you can't use a straw. Traditional vanilla and chocolate as well as specialty flavor mixes. - Sit down diner-style: clean white and red atmosphere with the slight feel of a diner or soda shop but without the excess grease. - Staff: graciously accepting of our sometimes silly and obnoxious post-drinking behavior. Say if an anonymous someone was throwing toast at another person at their table and doused their sausage paddies in another's vanilla shake, they wouldn't even bat an eye and just give them the freedom to be stupid. ;-) - End of the night stop: open 24 hours and serve large glasses of water. Lowlights (my flip side to highlights): - Few miles outside of downtown, so you need a responsible friend or cab to take you there after a night out. Another must visit place on our Carolina vusitng circuit.

Too bad there are no stars lower than one star. This steak and shake was terrible. I sat down to eat with four of my friends, one of them being a vegetarian. Altogether we ordered 4 milkshakes, 1 patty melt w/ onion rings, 2 cheesy cheddar burgers w/ Parmesan herb fries, 1 BLT w/ fries, and 1 veggie melt w/ parmesan fries (for the vegetarian). What we got was a VEGGIE MELT w/ BACON on it and no mushrooms, all regular fries, and no onion rings to be found, even though the ticket clearly stated ONION RINGS by the server. The waitress caught the mistake of the parmesan seasoned fries as soon as she brought us our food. Although she never caught the fact that we were missing an order of onion rings. Then we explained to the waitress that there was bacon on this so-called veggie melt. She was very confused looking on why he wanted to send the sandwich back to the kitchen. But when she finally did, the entire wait staff was standing around doing nothing as they stared in awe at our table. We shrugged it off and struggled to eat our mediocre food. I guess you get what you pay for with those cheap prices.

Went through drive thru at 1:30 on a Friday. It took 8 minutes to get to the speaker with 3 cars in front of us. Ordered a milkshake and a small coke. Took another 6 minutes sitting behind 1 car to get to the window. No apologies for the wait were offered. Then it took 4 minutes while she got our order together. Because for some unknown reason she couldn't get our order together while the car in front of us was waiting. The only reason we didnt pull out was to time how long it would take for two drinks. No thanks.

Worst steak and shake I've ever been to. Messed my order up, called gal was very incoherent and almost lethargic. Went in the next day to get it replaced same gal and the same story had no idea how to make the food that was on the menu or what went in it.

Honestly, what can I say about this place that hasn't been said before? Iama C. pretty much said anything you might want to know. It satisfies a craving and an urge to consume cheap, greasy food and feel like a damned 1950s barbarian while you're at it. And it succeeds in this attempt. Sometimes I can't help but wonder what exactly is in those "100% beef" patties.... Yeah, right. But I'm young, so my body can deal with "it". I've tried a wide range of food at Steak 'n Shake, but this time I opted for a less greasy option with chicken fingers. Which I've never had at any other one before. It's almost sacrilegious to not eat a burger here, I know. But there is a 10% amount of time every month where a burger just won't do it for me. The fingers ran me less than $5 and were decent. Nothing special, but good enough for what I wanted: something that tasted like chicken. The fries are always nice. Shoestring thin and crispy, and easily over-salted if you add too much of their seasoning, since they already pre-salt the fries. Service wasn't exceptionally slow, even though there appeared to be only one waitress on duty to feed the hungry folk after dark. Restaurant was clean enough. Food was good enough. What can I say, though I'm adamant that I "love Steak 'n Shake" it's a love born out of cheap, 3-4 star food, fast service, and a sweet 1950s setup. My body doesn't hate me after I consume their food (I'm looking at you 90% of fast food places), and my wallet is certainly thankful. So yes, I'd say I'm a fan, but I could never foresee a Steak 'n Shake receiving an "As Good as it Gets" 5 star review.

Walked in. Waited for table for one. Receptionist with cold personality. Waitress also seemed not to have a Care for a customer. Ordered chili mac supreme and chocolate shake. Came in a small bowl and shake in a to-go cup. Was told that they were out of glasses. This steak and shake Restaurant is poor service compared to others I have been to. P.s. I asked if they had hot sauce, waitress said yes. Never got it. Lol

Food is sweet always decent. However, we have been here 3 times this month and 2 of those times was lousy service. The one time it was good there was a manager from another store there... But tonight was my last straw. It seemed the host had to do the job of the two waitresses who seemed they would rather sit on dishracks behind the server station and play on their phones. I believe both girls were blonde. I manage a dine in restaurant and if I saw I had employees doing that while running up my labor they wouldn't be working for me much longer. I think that host girl was cooking too. Because after she brought our food out we never saw her again because she was in the kitchen yelling for the servers to get their orders....I don't think I will come back...this was crazy, where was the manager

The service here is not always the best but, today Tamika G was my server. Tamika did an awesome job. She was very attentive. She kept our glass full. There is a nice tip in store for her. The food is okay. I had the garlic steak burger shooters with fries. I love garlic so I did like the shooters. The only complaint about the shooters was there was a lot of bun compared to the amount of meat. Getting ready to have a shake. Hope it is as good as it looks in the picture.

Sad. Sad. I have always thought they had the best patty melt. But lately it's just bad. Not even toasted. Today it wasn't even warm enough to melt the cheese. The fries were ok, just not many. I had 18. That was ridiculous. I watched the "manager" clean the tables. It was sad. She was way too worried about her hair do to actually bens over any. She just wiped the water spots from the glasses and did not clean the entire table and left the ketchup running down the side of the bottle. You used to be able to depend in consistency of a franchise. Here you are going to consistently get bad. Go to five guys next door.

This place is awesome. It's diner style food. What I really like about this place is the Shakes. They are really big, thick and creamy. I always get the Reese's Peanut Buttercup shake. It has pieces of it swirled throughout the shake. They don't skimp on it either. The prices are very reasonable. You can eat good for under $15.
