Here's why it's a one star rating ... I was visiting the area and had eaten at a different Stax several times and thought the food quality was worthy of another visit to a new location. It was a Sunday around 10:45 am. I was very hungry and stopped in and was told to sit where I wanted. I found a small table and asked for a water. The waitress asked if I wanted breakfast or lunch. I said I wasn't sure so she gave me both menus. After a few minutes I decided on breakfast and was so looking forward to trying their breakfast. The waitress returned and asked if I was ready. I said yes, I would like the breakfast special. She responded by telling me that breakfast was over. I was stunned. She took the menus from me and I was so embarrased that I got up and left. I went down the street to another place and a customer told me that Stax serves breakfast 24/7. I will never go back. I never experienced anything like that before.

This is a very typical diner set up. Menu is also pretty standard diner fare. I stopped for lunch on my way out of town. The server was what one would think of as a great diner waitress. She was bubbly, super sweet, friendly and in a big hurry. There were no signs, placards or anything like that to say that there were "daily specials" available so I just ordered a burger off the menu. I know I could have asked, but there was just no evidence that there was any options other than the menu. After I had ordered, I overheard another server explaining the lunch options to a nearby table. Anyway, the burger was totally unimpressive, way overcooked and bland. Fries were served lukewarm at best. So, a nice atmosphere with, friendly service but no reason to go back either.

Some places advertise 'beyond ordinary'. This place was on the way there- fully ordinary. Actually that would be a generous description after being there experiencing bad pancakes I swear were 30 minutes old, runny flavorless eggs and ordinary gas station tasting coffee. I would say the cut and dry waitress being friendly and that the bad food was brought quickly were the two redeeming points of the breakfast with friends. Organic, fresh, local, gmo free- I would think a discussion of these topics with the cook would bring a questioning stare. Keep driving toward Main Street.

Came for a late breakfast on a Saturday, and the parking lot was completely full, with a line out the door. The line moved pretty fast and the food was awesome as usual. My wife had French toast and I had a western omelette. Both were made perfectly. The staff is friendly and efficient. If you are looking for a traditional diner meal, this is the best place around!

We used to eat lunch there everyday and breakfast most of the time great waffles , cooked like I liked them. I just get tired of same food I am kind of a pizza , burger woman myself. They do make great good we used to order out Thanksgiving dishes from them like we will this year. Well worth it.

Worst diner experience ever. Not kidding. Service without a smile. No oatmeal for breakfast? "Plain" bagels only? Totally retro but not in a cool kind of way. Exposed fluorescent ceiling bulbs. A weird chemical smell when I walked in (kinda like a disinfectant one smells in a barber shop with a bit of old cigarette mixed in). Icky small bathroom despite our 730am arrival on a Sunday. My group had pancakes seemingly out of a low quality box mix. Unremarkable coffee (though our server was good to keep our cups filled). Passable BLT. Low quality bread .... off the shelf from the cheap shelf. My first 1-2 star review ever.

Great home style country food with a little Greek thrown in.

Seeing this place weekly and hearing about it from locals, I knew that I had to make it here before I left the South. I went in on a Sunday morning, and there was already plenty of hustle and bustle. Clearly, this is where you need to eat when in Greenville and want a homestyle meal. The grub here is fairly standard, and the prices are low. The servers are as hospitable as they come. I was pretty pumped to eat a good ol' country meal on the outskirts of the uppity town of Greenville. I went with country ham, a biscuit, and some home fries. The country ham was ok, but super dried out. The biscuit was mealy and doughy. It did not crumble or crunch or melt as a biscuit should. The home fries were dry, underseasoned, and lukewarm. They were a lot like the kind you get at a buffet from under a heat lamp... disappointing. At $4.50, my meal was affordable... but just not good for a true Southern breakfast. I really like the atmosphere here, but I thought this joint could use some tweaking in the food department. All in all, I think that Stax's Original would offer a solid dining experience, but my grub was pretty disappointing. Check it out if you want something classic.

Usually for breakfast, we end up on Woodruff Rd, but we wanted something closer to home this morning. In living here over 7 years, this is the first time we'd been to Stax as a family for breakfast. The staff was pleasant and attentive. Our group of 4 adults and 2 kids had our meal in about 5-7 minutes (approx, I wasn't really timing, but I did note it was out quickly). I can't comment on the non-breakfast menu beyond the options looking good. An overall good experience and I'll be bringing my family back. It's also a nice bonus to know your dollars are staying in and helping support the local community instead of some faceless corporation.

I was hungry. Real hungry. Ordered an open faced roast beef sandwich w/gravy. Got one veg to go with it. Tiny shreds of beef on white wonder bread drowned in pale brown gravy that was tasteless. Served semi-war. One small scoop of stewed tomatoes in a small bowl, sweet and semi-warm. I felt like Rick Santorum after listening to the Kennedy speech. Just wanting to throw up. This place is an insult to taste. I was afraid I was going to be sick later....one of those places. Shame on them. But then it was ONLY SEVEN BUCKS! plus tip. Never again.

a solid place to get good breakfast. nothing fancy really... but i was always curious why they're so busy for breakfast... i've tried it, and i think i still prefer country ham house (tom's ham house) on Rutherford.

Went couple of times for brunch. Twice is enough. Menu seemed promising, especially their version of eggs benedict. Wife ordered the special on the board and other breakfast staples for the kids. Both times we were disappointed. Simply didn't taste good. Can't put my finger on it except saying generally that it was very bland and didn't seem homemade. Stick with Tommy's. We've never left the ham house unsatisfied -- lots of made from scratch dishes.

First of all, the service was great, all the servers were friendly middle-aged women with quintessentially "South Carolina" accents. But you go to restaurants to eat, and the food, though delivered quick and hot, was beyond bland. The gravy tasted like thick water and the the egg biscuit was only slightly more flavorful and was made with American style cheese, rather than Cheddar which is what Mary Beth's uses. Also the coffee was watery and weak. Bummer! I love the name and was really wanted this to be my go-to breakfast joint. Oh Well!

Stax the Original...from hearing "natives" talk, this place sounded like the holy grail of breakfast...and we thought we just might be on to something when we saw the packed parking lot and old timey diner décor... Wrong, think again there buddy. I really want an explanation for why there was even a single car in the parking lot at this place... (aside from the staff). This has to have been one of the most disappointing experiences I have had in Greenville, and Lord knows there have been many. Here's a rundown of our order... Me... "I would like a grilled cheese and hash browns, and I will have water because you have Pepsi products." Husband.... (Not sure what the particular combination was called", but think "Denver Omelet, toast, and hash browns and coffee" Waiting, waiting, waiting...drank water and coffee...no refills... Oooooo, food's here...while you are dropping it off we realize you are not our server...but we are thirsty... So...where's the cheese in the grilled cheese? Wonder bread, one slice of American cheese, and flattened is a kind explanation...cold hash browns with odd bits of slimy onion... Oh husband...how's your food? Small omelet, skimpy vegetables, same hash browns as you...and Wonder Bread toast... All this was ours for almost twenty dollars... Save your money, borrow a ten year old, and let them fix you breakfast at home.

Great breakfast location. The food is southern diner. I like to go here for breakfast because of the staff and the style food. If you go with any regularity at all, the staff will recognize you and welcome you. My kids love the pancakes and french toast. They offer grits or hash-browns. Coffee is basic, but they do provide half and half vs. non-diary creamer and free pour sugar instead of packet-only sweetener. The food is quick to the table and what I consider to be standard for a southern diner. Much better quality/experience than a Waffle House.

This place is the granddaddy of the 3 locations. It is across from Cherrypoint Shopping Center in an older section of Greenville. I could have gone to the Stax Omega Diner, which is literally down the street from my hotel but, I didn't want to waste an opportunity to see a different part of the city. The diner has a booth section as well as a large serpentine bar area. Grabbed a stool along the bar area since that's where a lot of the locals were hanging around at. Immediately greeted by a chipper waitress - you know you're in the South when a total stranger calls you "sweetie". As a Southern boy, I never tire of this Southern custom, especially in the morning. Ordered the breakfast special: two eggs, grits, biscuit or toast goes for about $4.35. Substituted home potatoes for the grits for an added 35 cents. For the life of me, I can't handle grits - so not all Southern customs cotton to me. Added a side of sausage patties for about a buck more. OJ was $1.55, coffee was $1.25. Bowl of gravy to go with the biscuits was 85 cents. Order came up in about 30 seconds - I was stunned at how fast that order came out. My suspicion is that they have premade the eggs, sausage, and potatoes on the griddle in the back and plated it once the order was in. All of the items were lukewarm, adding evidence to my theory. Sausage gravy was too floury for my taste, too. I'll admit that I was slightly peeved at this - breakfast should be freshly made, especialy eggs since it'll take all of 2 minutes to create my order. If they can do it in fast paced cities like Houston, Atlanta, and San Francisco, certainly Greenville can take the time to do it right. I had my juice, coffee, and biscuits to hold me until a freshly made order was done. So, they get docked a star for this. Had an extended talk with Judy, the cashier, at bill pay time. She has lived in Greenville all of her life and welcomed me on my first visit. She sang the praises of Caesar's Head and Table Rock State Parks (which I'll visit later today and tomorrow). When I mentioned that I begun to love this city, she invited me to move here. Now, that's friendly Southern manners! Who couldn't love these people?

As people have stated, other Stax's have been really great. So we tried lunch yesterday. I order chicken fried steak. Food looked like high cafeteria food and tasted the like. I found my steak had a piece of paper on the backside. Waitress said she would see about comp' ing my order. Another plate came right out, which was actually warm. All our food was either Luke warm or inedible. Really disappointing! To make things worst manger didn't comp my plate. To make things worst, he didn't want to hear about our concerns. What a jerk! Won't visit this place again.

Average eating at best. Classic meat and veggies hotspot. The fried chicken is not awesome at all; however, the mac and cheese, green beans, and cornbread were good. Pretty decent portion sizes for the price (around $7.50 for a meat and 3 plate). There aren't a lot of good meat and 3 places around in my opinion. Stax is really no different....just an old, popular place in a really good location.

Amazing breakfast and great service. We stopped in after a weekend of moving- tired, hungry and sore and desperate for coffee. We were sat promptly and greeted with coffee and water quickly. The pancakes were huge, hot and delicious. Biscuits and gravy platter was fresh and yummy with lots of black pepper and crumbled sausage in the gravy. And throughout the meal, the server kept the coffee coming. We'll definitely be back.
