The food can be pretty good. Unfortunately it's rarely prepared properly. For example, they are forever forgetting to put cheese on the veggie club. It looks so pathetic, I don't understand why they can't see that something is wrong before bringing it out that way. Also, the Savannah Chopped Salad is delicious when prepared properly, but they often forget ingredients, or serve it with balsamic dressing instead of the sherry shallot dressing it's supposed to have. The other day my friend got this salad and it was missing nearly everything except the romaine. How does that happen? To make it worse, I got the same salad that day and mine was awesome. We were on the same ticket, sitting together, and they couldn't see that one salad had nothing on it? They just don't look at the food before they serve it. I agree with previous reviewers who said the potato toppings are skimpy. I like most of the sandwiches, but portions are very unreliable. You never know if you're going to leave full or hungry.

When I was in high school I used to eat here all the time. Well, maybe not all the time. Some of the time. When I was sick of eating Mexican food. Yeah that sounds about right. I guess the biggest draw of coming here was that they had soft drink cups that were literally like 32 ounces. You math whizzes out there know that's a quart of soda. Now maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit, but I have never seen cups that large outside of a 7-Eleven. Now, being older and wiser, I realize the threat to, you know, world civilization that high fructose corn syrup poses and suddenly the place looks a lot less inviting. I used to always eat the Godfather here - roast beef, marinara sauce and cheese. I think they've taken that off the menu, however, and the portions in general seem to have shrunk the few times I've been back since high school. I think that's a positive trend, given how much food they used to serve, but every time I come back here I feel a little less interested in coming back again. So I'll stay away and keep this place at three stars, lest the downward slide continue.

Iama Critic Rating - McCalister's Deli - 2 Stars 1708 Augusta Street, Greenville, SC Overall: Really disappointing! No wonder the restaurant was empty. The Spud Max, one of their signature dishes, was utterly terrible! I used to go to the McCalister's in Spartanburg and remember the food as being much better than this junk! How far can a chain restaurant fall? $7.19 - Spud Max - 1 Star I take pictures of all the food I order, and It took a lot of time to make this dish look good. I had to clean the plate and "fluff" to potato just to make it look reasonably appetizing. But while the thin layer of condiments on this potato was pretty good, the other two pounds of this dish was disgusting, bone dry, overcooked, and worthless. It was basically like eating chunks of wet gray chalk. I gave it to my dog who ate the cheese and ham topping, but the disgusting potato is strangely sitting untouched in the middle of my yard. $5.29 - Bread Bowl of Chili - 2 Stars I have entered dozens of chili tournaments, so I sorta knows what good chili tastes like. This is not it! Not even close. This is like bottom of the chili pot, hot dog chili! This is like "Ryan's Buffet at the end of the day" chili! I mean it is not the worse chili, because it at least has tomato sauce, but it isn't all that good, and the only reason it gets 2 stars is the awesome bread bowl. $6.89 - Combo Half Reuben Sandwich and Half (Seasonal) Turkey Cranberry Salad - 3 Stars This is the only decent entree McCalister's delivered all night. This half sandwich half salad combo was delightful. The Ruben was perfectly prepared and meaty! The salad was tart and sweet and had a wonderful mix of fruits and nuts, but was suspiciously missing the turkey that was so prominently advertised. Still for less than $7 this dish was a flavorful combination! I deducted one star for false advertising in regards to the missing turkey. $4.00 - Chocalate Lovin' Spooncake - 3 Stars Why do restaurants always advertise with gorgeous pictures of desert cakes with huge slices sitting vertically and then, when you get your order, your tiny slice is laying on it's side on a tiny plate like a dead piece of wishful thinking? Perhaps this slice could not stand up properly because it was too thin to remain vertical! The rich flavor is what you expect, but there is just too little of what you were hoping for! $12.50 - Spud Max REMIX - 2 Stars We were so disappointed with McCalister's Deli's Spud Max and Bread Bowl of Chili entrees, that we decided maybe two not so good dishes might be better if we just dumped one on top of the other. Turns out it didn't do much for the chili, but it vastly improved the dry horrid potato. But this $12.50 entree combination, which you can make for yourself, is simply too expensive for what little flavor you get in return.

I loved McAlisters Deli. Had not been in a while. Stopped in for a spud and Tina sandwich. WORST tuna ever. Runny and dry tuna. The potato was plain with butter and sour cream. One very small cup that had obviously sat for a while because all the top was covered in water. A terrible to go dinner. Never going there again.
