It's not Mexican, I guess it's really bad American trying to be Mexican, or Tex-Mex as they call it. Trying to think of something positive...oh yeah the Dos XX was cold. The atmosphere, visually, is cool but the staff is a little disgruntled. Nothing better than listening to your server complain about the job. In his defense, I guess $3 an hour does suck. Bottom line...the food is not good. Nothing even close to authentic for any country/nationality combination. Unless they're trying to create their own kinda thing, if that's the case it's still not good. But hey...only one way for you to find out for yourself.

Should've listened to yelp. 25 minutes for a to-go order of fajitas when the restaurant was practically empty. When I got back home with my order, it was missing the sour cream, guacamole and the steak was barely cooked. Don't get me wrong, I like medium rare steak, but this was blue!!! The quality of food sucked, the wait sucked, all in all, you're better off going to Taco Bell.

Iama Critic Rating - Don Pablo's Mexican Kitchen - 2 Stars 741 Haywood Road, Greenville, SC Overall: At two stars I think I will just forgo my normal review style and get right to it. After having a great experience at El Molcajete, my critic friends and I have been counting the days to try another Mexican restaurant, so we chose Don Pablo's. When we arrived at 5pm on a Friday night the parking lot was literally empty, we thought perhaps the place had closed, but the faint Mexican music and undeniably delicious smells drew us to the door. Having the pick of the place was interesting, as the decor has much to draw your attention. First things first, all Mexican restaurants need to learn a thing or two from Don's about table chips and salsa, the table chips Don Pablo's serves are perfect half round tortilla chips, and the salsa, particularly their hot salsa, is fabulous, with chunks of onions and real grilled peppers in it! I could have eaten the chips and salsa and went home 5 Star happy. But sadly we ordered Cornmeal Spoon Bread, Acapulco Nachos and the Chicken and Beef Fajita's as appetizers. And to follow our excessive appetizers we ordered their Fajita burritos and the Presidente Combo platter. The two "real" appetizers and the three main course dishes cost a cool $50.00, but was it worth it? My Fajita burrito was served with the tortilla cracked wide open, but while its presentation was very poor, it was tasty, and the cilantro was a pleasant surprise. My dinner companion enjoyed his Presidente Combo platter without complaint, and he praised the Cornmeal Spoon Bread. Unfortunately, not everything was as perfect as the wonderful chips and outstanding salsa, the rice and beans were bland and ordinary, the Acapulco Nachos were certainly a nice presentation, but my guest's first comment was "Where are the rest of them". I don't care how perfectly you arrange a dozen nachos on a plate, can any restaurant justify $0.75 per nacho chip. And the Fajita's were perhaps the most meager I have ever seen, and lacked peppers of any kind. Under the paltry supply of chicken and beef was an inadequate pile of little more than onions. Perhaps this is why the three soft tortillas they provided were so small. While our dishes were tasty, Don Pablo's needs to either drop the price or bulk up these items, because most of our order was not worth the price. So if you are looking for a step up from the ordinary, Don Pablo's is the place, if you are looking for the best Mexican in the upstate, you will need to keep looking.

I went there for the first time this past Tuesday night. Yes, it was late (they close at 10, we arrived at 9:05). Normally, if you are coming in near the end of open hours, the staff tries to at least get you started quickly. Not so much here. We were seated quickly - and our drink order taken. It took over 5 minutes to get water (then the lemons for the water didn't arrive until the meals came!). It was an additional 10 minutes to get our order taken. It was NOT busy - and there were only 2 of us at our table. Also, we almost immediately set our menus down in the universal sign of "Yup! We're ready to order! Let's do this!" Evidently this waitress had never heard of such a thing. The chips and salsa were good... I love the salsa - but that teeeeny bowl they bring it in is, well, inadequate. I ordered soft tacos, chicken. They came with beans and rice. The rice was a smidge dry - that wouldn't have been a problem if we had more salsa! The beans were quite yummy. I would order those again! I also liked the tacos. The chicken was seasoned nicely, the tortillas were freshly made, and the overall experience of eating the tacos was "Mmmm.... Yummy". I would like to give this place another shot... maybe earlier in the shift? Maybe with a server who actually gave a damn?

This place is covered with dust and the waiters are rude and the food is disgusting and tasted like it was from a bag from the freezer not to mention it was over 30 dollars per person! If I were you I would go somewhere else.

We went here for dinner on a Sunday with a medium/large group (about 15 People). Let me begin with saying it was 6:00pm when we got there and there were only 3 other tables in the building, each with around 6 people. So the restaurant was pretty empty. It took nearly 15 minutes for the waitress to take our drink order. Then after 20 more minutes, she came back out to get our regular order. Then we wait 45 minutes and the food finally arrives. I ordered a beer and waited nearly 20 minutes. When the waitress came back I asked again. 20 more minutes go by and it finally arrives. The food was alright but more expensive (for smaller portion and lower quality) than the equivalent Mexican restaurants in town (Monteray's, Papas and Beer, Tequilas). Their largest beer size (for the same price as the other places 34oz) was 22oz. So that sucked. Pitchers were $16 compared to other Mexican places (usually under $10). We left around 8:30pm. Overall it was not a good time. I certainly will NOT be returning to this place.

Visiting Greenville for a conference. Outside looked bright and colorful. Service was terrible, no one was in the place so that should have been a clue. Weird waitress kept sneaking up behind us and thinking it was funny to startle us. Salsa out of a jar, cold tasteless chips, terrible food. Taco Bell would have been better.

Good service tonight...portions generous for price (pick 2 or pick 3 combos)...love the atmosphere...loss of color and fun layout...recommend trying the macho sauce (you will have to ask for it)-very good, not on the menu...overall experience was GOOD tonight.

  • DeAnne M.

I always enjoy the food, but during this visit I had a horrible waiter. He was so bad that I felt management needed to know that i had to waive over a different waiter just to place my order. However, i will not let this bad experience keep me from returning. The food is delicious!

  • David N.

I love this place for the following reasons: it has great atmosphere with colorful lights and decor and large spacious dining room with high ceilings. It is next to Barnes and Noble and the Haywood Mall and I love their cheese enchiladas and their fresh flour tortillas that are hand made while you wait.

  • Clair D.

I talked my bf into taking me here tonight. What a disappointment. The employees were very nice, helpful, and friendly, but that wasn't why I came here. The atmosphere was nice, just a bit too dark to see the menus at the table. The food is very mediocre. Very. I ordered cheese chile rellenos (poblanos) and an enchilada combo. Instead of delicious Mexican cheese, it was stuffed with colby jack. Not good. The enchilada was almost tasty, the only issue I had with it was it tasted like the cumin was sprinkled on just before bringing to the table and not cooked in the food. My bf had the 3 amigos and he was very disappointed. He said the chicken enchilada either had no chicken in it or nothing that he would recognize as chicken. Needless to say, we are done with Don Pablo's. If you want atmosphere and nice employees and you don't mind paying too much for tv dinner type food, go for it. Otherwise, drive on past and head for a different restaurant. If I could , I would give 4 star for service, and 0 for food taste, quality and value.

    (1)
  • Gil G.

Not what it used to be. Comparatively mediocre food and mediocre quantities for more money. Given the new competitive options in town, Don Pablo's has fallen off my "like" list.

  • Zachary M.

Worst fajitas ever. I was convinced from the other reviews that this place sucked ass but my dad just had to try it. His fish was way overdone and the portions were pretty pathetic. My fajitas came on about three bites of veggies. Lousy draft beer selection and even lousier selection of tequila. If i could give this place zero stars i would

Had high hopes for trying out a chain restraint that is void in my neck of the woods. Little disappointed. Chios n salsa were ok , but nothing like the "authentic" salsa from rural West Virginia that I'm used to. I ordered the Cinco Combo and while it had some good items , it also had a few that seemed like they just threw together a bunch of stuff from the kitchen into a corn shell and served it. Wish my relatives would have recommended going downtown to the Mellow Mushroom!!

  • Stan S.

Don Pablos is a chain Texmex eatery , and we have found it to be very dependable , and predictable ! The El Presidente plate with it's Chile Rellenos , is the only Chile Rellenos I have had in Greenville that even deserved to be called a Chile Rellenos ! Decent TexMex style food in Greenville is a pretty limited resource , but Don's food is hot, tasty, and we enjoy it allot ! Chips and Salsa are a good starter and keep you busy while the meal is being cooked to order . Keep up the good work Don Pablo Clan ! Exterior of building needs upgrade to get 5th star ....looks really bad outside ?

  • Amy S.

I, like everyone else wish that I read the reviews on this place before eating here. I also agree that the chips and salsa were good. The ambiance is very neat inside, much like a place in Mexico. The staff are all Hispanic so I figured the food must be authentic also. Boy was I wrong. I ordered the fish tacos. I couldn't believe that they came in flour tortillas. No one puts fish tacos in a flour tortilla!...not in Mexico, not in San Diego, not anywhere that I know of. The fish was awful. It tasted old. Basically, the food just made me feel sick. I cannot even remember getting a plate of food where I took a few bites and threw the whole thing in the garbage. That dinner was a total waste of money. I don't know what is going on with this place. You think they'd get the hint from these reviews and make some changes. Btw...On The Boarder is by FAR better than this place. I actually had a good meal there. So, if you don't think that is good food, then you really wont like Don Pablos!

Been here twice, even though I didn't enjoy the first time (friend wanted to go here for his birthday the second). Service was bad both times, food is greasy and unremarkable, though I think the chips and salsa were ok, but those are kinda hard to screw up. After second time, entire group of friends agreed not to go back.

Ate here last Saturday for dinner and was surprisingly underwhelmed. I wish I had read the yelp reviews before deciding on this restaurant! We got the queso blanco as an appetizer. It was so-so. Nothing to write home about. Chips and salsa were ordinary. Then I ordered 2 fish tacos. Fish tacos are one of my favorite dishes and I order them frequently when I go out for Mexican. I actually just wanted one but they don't let you order them a la carte which is quite inconvenient. They were probably the worst fish tacos I've ever had. They came with a cilantro sauce which I didn't care for. A choice of a side order was included - I got mash potatoes which I only took 2 bites of. D got three amingos enchiladas which were 3 different types of enchiladas. They were also just so-so and he only ate one of them. Our teenage waiter did recommend the corn bread as a side which turned out to be fabulous. Waste of money. If you must go here, order the corn bread as a side.

This place is about on par with South of the Border out on Pelham - bland and uninteresting. Actually I would say it's worse because the service has always sucked when I've gone there. Not worth visiting.

  • rob s.

Yup, definitely not real Mexican food. More less Mexican food for the masses. You may see Hispanics in the kitchen but you'll never seen them eating there. That should give you an indication. Think Taco Bell minus the "fast food" aspects.

Moderately priced restaurant. Free chips and salsa with every meal -- totally a plus. Came here for lunch and order the lunch special which was around $8 includes soup/salad. The waiter was a bit eccentric, but good service regardless. Huge interior so little time waiting for a table. Only negative was the location is pretty hectic, almost impossible to turn left out of the parking lot.

This is not good mexican food. Very watery and poor service. I think the chips were from a bag.

  • John C.

After reading all the negative reviews, I had exceptionally low expectations for this location. However, I was delightfully surprised! I reckon the service was pretty spectacular because the business was empty and the server was able to devote extra attention to our table. Chips and salsa was just ok. My wife loved the salsa but I know the salsa sucked and could have been A LOT better!!!! Ordered an app and two entrees and everything tasted accurate and good. Our experience was vastly different than those of the Yelp users who hated the place. We'd be back again at 4:30pm on a Friday night for sure!!!

  • Cricket M.

This is one of my favorite restaurants! I have no idea why so many reviews only have 1 or 2 stars. The salsa is homemade and way better than the chain Mexican restaurants we are used to. The guacamole is homemade and SO GOOD! I had the steak and chicken fajitas and they were excellent. My husband had 4 different types of enchiladas and he loved them all. The food is very flavorful. You get a TON of food and leave feeling very satisfied. This is a great place to eat.

    (5)
  • Lisa C.

Just sat down the waitress is very nice. The tortilla chips are kind of rubbery. We will see how the rest of the meal goes.

  • Daniel C.

My wife and I have been visiting Don Pablo's for years. Never disappointed. Hot and plentiful food and friendly service. Management presence on floor is a constant. The one star reviews baffle me. If you expect gourmet Mexican food go to a Rick Bayless restaurant or to a quaint cantina in San Diego where I used to live. The Chili Rellenos are authentic and handmade tortillas are hard to find. Don't give up on this place!!

    (5)
  • Jon V.

Atrocious, terrible, awful. Ok, I'm fairly lenient when it comes to restaurant reviews...but this place is bad. Rarely have I been so turned off by an order that I refused to eat more than a bite. This was one such time. I ordered the grilled fish tacos. When they arrived they were lukewarm at best. The cheese had solidified and the tortilla was soaked. The tortilla must have been drenched by the obviously dethawed or microwaved fish. The rice was reheated. The beans chunky and salty. I went with 4 others who ordered a variety of other meals and each was dissatisfied or outright hated it. Folks, in all seriousness...there must be 100s of better options in and around Greenville. This place should be avoided at all costs. Don't let the good location tempt you.

    (1)
  • JP S.

The Pablo's in Greenville is in a very cool reclaimed building. Bright, clean and with fabulous aromas. Service was good. Menu items plentiful and the dining experience was 4 stars worth. The Don's Burger is good for a gringo centered appetite.. Dilla Ck and RioGrand Ribs were yummy. Order the Plato Fresco with any small plate or entree for a healthy side. Plus they have GREAT Chips and the salsa ain't too bad either.

Die of starvation before you come here. The service was terrible. The food over cooked. This restaurant needs to go back to being a Houlighans.

  • MaryAnn R.

Thought we would try this place again after having a bad experience a few years ago....thought maybe they improved....nope. How do they stay in business? In their defense I am a special order type. Ordered fajitas, no peppers - came out just steak, no onions. But instead of redoing ( the steak was DRY yuck) they just sauteed some onions and brought them out on a plate! I had to ask to re-do (should have been obvious) but even the re-do was bland and poorly cooked. Epic fail. Blood orange margarita was sour, tasted like weak cheap tequila used..... not coming back, ever.

    (1)
  • Ben L.

I love fish tacos, but not theirs. The tortillas were cold. The fish was salty and very odd tasting. The glob of cheese was gross. There was some iceberg lettuce, a sad substitute for cabbage you find on better fish tacos. I tasted the sauce on a fork and just wrinkled my face in confused distaste. These were the worst fish I have ever had. My server was great, he was kind and tried to be helpful.

    (1)
  • Karen M.

The soup is pretty good, but I'm really not a fan of the small bowl. ..which is very shallow and tends to get the soup cold rather quickly also caution as there is quite a bit of a wait between refills apparently they start from scratch each time you order. Lol

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque.
