This is the best southern food restaurant in columbia. They have all the classics but have some lighter fares too, such as grilled Salmon and Chicken and great salads. The food is flavored well and the prices are reasonable. I make some good soul food and this is the only place I have found that actually taste as good as or better than my own. The staff is always polite. Only advice is if you are getting it to go, make sure to call ahead because the meat is cooked fresh and can take a few minutes. Love this place.

While I wouldn't go on record to say that Bert's is the best southern cooking I've ever experienced, I will say that it's good. Especially for an inexpensive location, where it's easy to get a quick bite to eat, and go about your day. I ran in for lunch, and ordered up the Fried Chicken and 3 sides. I elected to try the black eye peas, corn, and Fried Okra. The only BIG negative about it, was the Fried Okra seems to have been dropped into fry by the handful. So some of them were stuck together and when you pulled it apart its breading would crumble and fall off. Leaving you with just well heated/cooked okra. Meaning it's a bit more slimy, and doesn't have that crunch I like from the breading. The corn and peas were typical. Nothing homemade to rave and scream about, but not something I wouldn't eat again either. It complimented my main course perfectly so I don't have a reason to complain. The chicken was fried very well, left it nice and juicy with lots of flavor. Flavor wasn't overshadowing the food itself, so it was nice to get in all that great taste without a ton of salt/pepper/etc fighting the chicken. So great job there! I followed it all up with some dessert in the form of warm Apple Pie. This was the perfect end of meal treat. Great flavor, tons of apples, perfect crust. It was delicious. Again, not the most amazing southern food I've ever had, but it was tasty and I wouldn't avoid this place if I'm in the area again. Although I may randomly stop in for dessert at a minimum. :-)

Brad S's negative review of this place is humorous. His best rating went to Domino's Pizza in the area if you look at his reviews. The food here is insanely good. The pot roast is the best I've had. The people are nice, the food is great and not overly priced. Solstice Kitchen, and this place are all you need to survive life in Columbia, SC :)

The food at this place is GREAT! They really put their heart and soul into the cooking and it shows. Some of the best southern food I have ever had. The waitress(also owner?) there is so sweet and accommodating. She gave some great recommendations and even gave our table a complimentary dish to try! The only part I did not absolutely love about my visit was the time that it took. I understand this is a small family place, I was just on a lunch break and went over my 1 hr break. Maybe it would be better to go during dinner.

Stopped by on Sunday and they had their brunch menu. Got the Sausage and Chicken Étouffée and the wife got the chicken salad sandwich. Both were delicious. The owner told us they make everything from scratch with recipes handed down from the family. We could taste the quality. We will definitely be back to try some of their other dishes. The owner said their burgers are very good too, and we haven't really found good burgers here yet.

We stopped here for dinner while driving through town. Very nice atmosphere. Comfortable like the living room of a person you'd want to visit. The owner sat us and was truly a pleasure. The food was very good. I really liked the fried chicken and the mashed potatoes. The batter on the chicken was excellent and the potatoes were buttery and a bit lumpy which is how I like em. Dressing and carrots were OK but nothing special. This is not a place to go for a quick bite. Service was relaxed but maybe a bit too much as we needed to get back on the road. The portion size was smaller than I would have liked. At $12, 2 pieces of chicken was a little light for dinner more of a lunch size. 3 would be more reasonable or maybe an option of 4 for $14 or $15. That said the owner was as I said delightful. I'm sure she would have upped the portion if I asked but as I said pressed for time and needed to get back on the road. The other issue. And this is a pet peeve of mine was that they don't do refills on soda. The profit margin on soda is so high that if you are not going to do a refill it needs to be under a dollar. And even then I really just prefer the refills. Would I stop again? Yes if I had time for a nice slow southern meal. But there is some room for improvement.

While I don't normally call people out, Brad S needs to get schooled in Southern cooking, and proper grammar. While it seems your biggest complaint was the lack of free refills ( hello McDonalds ), you did say the food was good, a seemingly severe understatement. The atmosphere at Bert's is relaxing and "home-y". The decor is Southern Comtemporary, not Cracker Barrel! And the service makes you feel like family. As for the food, it speaks for itself. They cover all of the bases : fried, grilled, baked, and broiled, along with a selection of soups and salads. Three sides and a choice of a meat for an average of $12 can't be beat. The flavors blend well among the multitude of choices, and there's always something new to try that's not on the menu. I highly recommend the grilled pork chop, squash casserole and the sweet potato soufflé. The newest item is the creamiest and dreamiest pimento cheese EVER!!!! Plan to spend a minimum of an hour while you're there as you'll love the relaxing meal and the staff. And if I thought I could get away with it, I wouldn't just lick my fingers, I'd lick the plate too ( just like at mom's )!!!!

My husband and I were in town for a wedding. We are totally unfamiliar with the area so I looked on Yelp for a nearby restaurant We decided to try Bert's as it had some of the best reviews. My husband had the pulled chicken bbq and I had the pulled pork. Both dinners came with 2 sides and cornbread. The restaurant is very clean and neat. I really liked the simple, uncluttered decor. The sitting area in the front is very tastefully decorated. They were not busy but it took awhile for our meals to come. I assume they pretty much prepare food as it's ordered. We were not in a hurry so this was not a problem. I don't mind waiting for good food. I think the hostess/waitress may have been one of the owners. She was very sweet and pleasant. We enjoyed the food quite a bit. I really didn't love the Sangria but I generally make my own and like it a very particular way. My husband especially liked the mustard based barbecue sauce. We've only had it in this part of the country. We would certainly return and recommend it to others.

What a great find! The restaurant is lovely and impeccably clean. The owners have taken personal pride in the styling and upkeep of the restaurant. Even though the storefront is modern, you are greeted by lovely container gardens at the front entrance. There are outdoor dining tables with red umbrellas to the side of the restaurant. Inside, the first thing you see are the homemade cakes flanking the counter--a sign of the good things to come. I had the meat and three combination with fried chicken, mac and cheese, green beans and fried okra. The food is so good and genuine, it is like a step back in time. The chicken is the best I have ever had and I have enjoyed a lot of fried chicken in my 60+ years--hot, juicy, with a bit of spice. It was clearly brined and the crust was so flakey. And I have been trying to make mac and cheese like theirs for years. Now I am just going to buy it from them. This is the real deal. And nicer folks you could not meet. The restaurant is in Elgin which is a bit out of the way for Columbia dwellers but it worth every mile of the trip to get this food. I am hooked!

What a joy!!! Arrived in Columbia tired after a 9 hour drive. Went on Yelp to review restaurants near hotel. What a pleasant surprise finding Bert's. The food is delicious and Kathy treats you like you're her first cousins! The smothered pork chops, fried chicken, oxtails, and ALL of the egg roll appetizers are great. Especially the collard green egg rolls!! They were wonderful. I will definitely visit again on my next trip to town. Thanks Kathy for treating my family so nice.

The night we went it was totally empty at 7 pm. That should have been a sign/warning. First the decor is a hodgepodge of various types of decor that really don't go together. It's a mix of Southern with what might call casual former furniture with plates and utensils straight from a cafeteria. Our server seemed to have never been trained or had any experience. She lacked a proper greeting and I don't believe she even told us her name. She didn't take our drink orders when she sat us, instead she told us to tell her when we were ready to order. We both ordered chicken. I got a soda to drink. When I asked for a refill I was told THEY CHARGE FOR REFILLS! I wished I was warned because I would have never order a coke to begin with. The food came out and was surprisingly good. My mash potatoes were more in the warm side versus hot. But everything else was good. While we ate we never really felt comfortable. The atmosphere with the decor made you feel as if you were eating at someone's house. It was silent and the lights were bright. They did in the middle of our meal start playing some Kenny G like jazz from a boom box. It was a little too loud. When we went to pay we had to tell them what we ate. The 2 of us ate for $28. I honestly thought that was a little overpriced for the atmosphere, the cheap plates, lack of service and for CHARGING FOR REFILLS. Also, they had all the signs saying not to touch anything or reach over the counter. You just don't feel comfortable here. In the in you are paying for cracker barrel food without the great service, professional atmosphere and comfortable decor. We won't be returning. And I unfortunately cannot suggest this place.
