Jewel’s Deluxe Restaurant & Catering

This is home cooking at its best: Unpretentious, ridiculously inexpensive, friendly, and soul-enriching. Placed idyllically on the lost-to-time town square, Jewel's isn't the place you go to check out the latest nouveau variation on Southern cuisine. What you get is straight out food yo mama cooked (or the mama of yo Southern friend), in an environment the locals (and their mama's) also choose to dine in. Another Yelper did a great job of describing the unique order process. I ordered baked chicken, rice with gravy, and a side salad. All had excellent flavor. My wife had the chicken salad, which she found a bit mushy for her taste, though she loved my mini cornbread bites. Drink choices are tea (sweet, naturally), lemonade, and water; don't expect more. It's so hard nowadays to resist the urge to adapt your menu to suit the kale and wine pairing crowd. My guess is that Jewel's will be serving its same menu long after the kale has wilted, the wine pairings have divorced, and Chef Gordon Ramsey has returned to his British fish and chips shop.
I've always been a little apprehensive to try this place because I don't like going to new restaurants where I can't scope out the interior before I go in. I've always heard good things about it but have never had the opportunity because it is only opened M-F for lunch, and I worked out of town. I have just recently started working across the street from Jewel's and I finally got a chance to try it. It is a meat and three sides place, but they give you a lot of choices each day and the food is very tasty. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is very cozy and comfortable. The staff was very friendly. When you walk in, they give you a pencil and there are small pieces of paper on the table to write down the items you would like to order. The waitress will come and pick it up and bring back your food once it is ready. They also give you small biscuits and cornbread muffins to go with your meal, which were delicious. You will leave with a satisfied belly and wallet, for a standard meat and three sides with drink runs around $9, not too bad. I think they may do catering, but I'm not sure.
WOW!!!! This place is great. I grew up on good southern cooking. This brought back many memories of Grandma's cooking.

Go for the burgers... And the friendly wait staff... Sit at the bar and take it all in. This is a serious "Hole in the Wall"... And I mean that as a compliment.
Extremely slow service and poor quality food. Wasn't informed until after eating that this place doesn't accept cards. Had to go to 3 ATMs to find one that worked. Horrible experience
When we want to get fancy in Darlington, we head on over to the Raceway Grill! The ambience is one of a kind with racing memorabilia everywhere and a nice hometown diner kind of feel. We always order the Ribeye steaks. I've always heard that the T-Bones are kind of gristly there so I stay away. I have ordered a hot dog with slaw and chili and it was good and I always have trouble when I try to make myself stop eating my fries (because they are delicious). I have noticed that the hamburger steak might be their signature dish, because everybody is always ordering that whenever we go. Be sure that you are in good company when you go and not on a time limit because it can take a while to bring out your food. They do serve beer in cans, so you can always choose to get a little tipsy during your wait. They don't deny these long waits, in fact, they keep a disclaimer at the front letting you know that they prepare their food fresh and it might take a while. I feel like sometimes it takes way too long, but that's just my opinion. If you don't feel like waiting you can just call ahead and go pick your order up when it is ready. Sometimes on weekend nights it can crowd up quickly, so keep that in mind. Also bring your cash or check because they do not accept credit cards.

My son and I have eaten here with my Mother several times because she likes their seafood. I found the food to be bland. What really tipped the scale for me was finding a small roach (not a water bug....a roach) fried into my onion ring. I almost vomited because I had already eaten a few before I saw the one with the roach in it. I discreetly informed the waitress. After taking my whole plate to the back she returned to inform me that it must have gotten into the freshly made batter and apologized. Needless to say....they have roaches. I figured as much, since the menus were covered in a sticky film and the bathroom was falling apart and filthy, but I was giving them a chance anyway since my Mother seemed to like the food. She comped my meal which I did not eat anyway. My stomach was in knots. My Mother still likes it and continues to eat here. I on the other hand refuse. If you have nerves of steel and a strong stomach...go for it. If you like cleanliness and have a sensitive stomach and don't like to eat deep fried critters...I advise you to head back to the search bar. *I gave it a 2 star for you Mom! It would have been 1 if I hadn't taken your love of their food into account.*
I always feel like I am sacrificing quality over quantity when I eat here. They give you huge portions at reasonable prices, but it's not the best fried seafood around. The food is decent though and they have other options on the menu rather than fried seafood like steak and chicken. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Previous reviewers are right on about the broiled seafood, stay away from it!
Best seafood without going to the coast!

Loved it the food was nicely prepared. Good selection.... The servers kept my drink full. That's a big deal for me. Service with a smile country appeal.
OMG this place is BAD. I'd give it 0 stars if I could. It's like the freakin Thunderbird with half the menu. I made the mistake of taking a colleague here on a business meeting, and it was very awkward because neither of us actually wanted to eat anything on this buffet. Never again...wow. Unbelievable.
The food was okay; buffet style. Nothing fabulous but it was fulling. Servers were nice.

The food was pretty good, but then I picked up my tea cup the wrong way and then.. BOOM! It spilled all over my pants . The workers just looked, and didn't do anything. They walked out and gave a few paper towels (which we had to ask for) I had to go in the men's room and use the at least 15 year old blow-dryer to try to dry it off. I ended up putting a fresh clean pair of pants on from my suitcase. we had been traveling to myrtle beach and luckily I did have an extra pair of pants! Then the girl walked out from behind the counter and started mopping and mopping and mopping but didn't go to our table and didn't ask for help!!! I've experienced better.
It a good thing they got the best location to catch all the beach traffic. I will not be a repeat customer. Staff was slow, rude and the food was cold. I wish I had counted the number of customers that brought their food back because it was wrong the first time.

I'm never going to this place again. I work late in Darlington and used to drop by occasionally. Not again. It's very early in the morning and an obnoxious waitress overcharges me because of a mis-communication when the order is placed. But this jerk had the nerve to refuse to fix it. It's not worth my time to call back the next morning and get a manager to straighten it out. Not over a $7 difference. But it pisses you off when an incompetent minimum wage fool decides to wave her hand in your face and tells you to 'go to waffle house instead'.
