Super tasty, I've eaten here three times this week and I'm afraid that I'm going to turn into Pizza the Hut from Spaceballs. The new Za's is SO MUCH BETTER than the old Za's!

Za's is under new ownership. There's a fresh coat of paint, the ropes are gone and everything looks new, with the exception of the Pizza Oven. We were seated promptly and our server was there in a minute..... She took our drink orders and we set about reviewing the menu. I have to be honest, there weren't many changes that I noticed. For an appetizer we decided on the Caprese Salad. Here is my one complaint ..... In July, you can find Red Tomatoes at the Farmers Market; they did not shop at the Farmers Market. Get my drift...... For the main course I ordered the Napa Zas Pizza. It was very tasty indeed. All in all a good meal with great service. Glad Za's is back.

I have eaten at Za's over the years and always enjoyed the food. The remodeling of the restaurant has really transformed the atmosphere and given the place a much warmer feeling. I had no idea that they have a private room for groups. We started with the spinach artichoke dip - excellent with a little kick, and plenty for four. I had a pizza with tomato pesto sauce, BBQ chicken, pepperoni, black olives, and mushrooms. Very tasty and well prepared. I will have to come back and try the rest of the menu!!!

I'm very glad Za's re-opened! This 3 star is based largely on the past, but may change up or down after our next visit. We've been enjoying Za's since we moved from Charleston a long time ago. My favorite menu item is not on the new menu, which was the Cali Salad with tuna. They took several menu options away. Instead of the old try-fold menu with different pizza options, pastas, salads, etc., they have narrowed it down to a one sided menu (cocktails/wine/beer on other side). Thank goodness they had the Chicken Ranch Calzone, or my wife may have rioted. The new updated look of the restaurant was needed, but on our first visit back the kitchen had a bit of a back slide. I blame this largely on execution. My wife's calzone was not cooked long enough, only had a few pieces of chicken, and was only about 1/2 full. They also raised the price on this dish, and took away the side dish? Yes, you read that correctly more expensive, less food, and poorly executed. I'm not sure how long they've been back open, but as a former cook I attribute this to lack of experience. The flavor was still there, but it was like when you buy a big bag of chips and open it and it is mostly full of air. The dough wasn't cooked through, and it didn't have nearly enough ingredients inside (especially for the price). I had the Greek chicken pita. It was exactly what I thought it would be. Not bad, but not something that had me wanting to come back for more. The staff was very nice, attentive, and good at their jobs. I hope these kinks can be worked out with more experience by the guys preparing the food. My wife said she didn't really miss the side dish, but was baffled at how they would take it away and raise the price. We'll go back after they've had a little time to work the kinks out. I hope it can return to their former greatness of years ago! This was one of our favorite spots for years.

I'm very glad Za's has reopened. It seems like forever since we have been here. The renovations are good, I guess. The place is really not that much different, but the walls are painted. The layout and patio area are all still the same. Even the booth we sat at was right next to our usual booth. They've made some menu changes, but not many. I still got the Za's Traditional Pizza. It tasted just like the previous one I used to order. I thought it was good. Our waitress was very attentive. We got seated immediately. No complaints at all in that department. We ordered the Caprese Salad which was good. However, since it's July, it would have been great to have a nice RED Juicy one. I also wondered why we got these tiny little containers with Parmesan Cheese and Red Peppers instead of the larger ones that sit on the table. Over all it was a great meal. We will be going back. Great Pizzas..... But a Red Juicy tomato would have made a better presentation in the Caprese Salad.

Well, well, well - the new(?) and improved(?) Za's. The atmosphere is less cozy but very sleek and clean. Thank God they took those horrible ropes off of the walls. It was like the place was supposed to be a Captain D's and they changed their minds at the last minute and decided to make it a pizza joint. Overall, the makeover doesn't suck. It certainly needed it. In more ways than just aesthetics. Of course, they were packed with a wait at 6:30pm. It was only 10-15 minutes and they will take your number and text you when your table is ready. You can also keep track of the wait time - who's in front of you, when you're next, etc - with a handy little app. I downloaded the app because I have about 100gb of extra space on my phone, but I don't see it making much sense for most people, given that only two restaurants in Columbia use it. It's a cool feature so hopefully that will change. The service wasn't terrible. The server was what you expect here. College age, little experience, doing her best. She brought us about 12 sets of forks & knives for our 4 top (and infant), which gave us all a tickle. She was really trying. We got the Spinach and Artichoke Dip appetizer - it was pretty dang good. My 2 year old loved it, which is a small miracle - photo evidence attached. However, she didn't bring us any app plates. And when she did, after being asked twice, she brought us regular plates with puddles of dishwater in them. Having worked in restaurants much of my life, I'm familiar with the "fresh out of the wash/no one bothered to dry these" plates. It's cool. They were super busy and it happens. Still kind of a bummer though. Our entrees were all good. There were smiles around the table. And, it's important to note that both my wife and I were employees of the previous version of this restaurant. That being said, we think the food might actually be better. It's still a little early to say, and the menu is more or less the same - but there's something different and it seems to be something good. I had the Chicken Bacon Ranch Calzone. I decided it was best to go for an old classic to really get a feel for what they've done. I'll be back for lunch to make the final determination on whether it was necessary to fire the entire staff and start over. That was a little cold, but okay. Anyway, it's worth a try.

Za's has just reopened, and the inside looks like a totally different restaurant. Swanky wood paneling, hip modern lighting, and a funky tree sculpture/light fixture behind the bar that mesmerized our small child. We had the caprese and the three cheese pizza. Even though the caprese was huge for two, with fresh heirlooms + perfect little clouds of mozzarella, I almost wanted to order two. The garlic flavored crust and quality of the cheeses on the pizza was delicious, but the ricotta made it almost too rich. With the long lineup of sauces and veggies available, I'll probably build my own next time. I love that Devine St. has another slightly fancier option with a solid looking menu. This is definitely a place I'll come back when I want to feel a little swanky while eating something simple and delicious.

So glad Za's has reopened! Their white pizza with smoked Gouda is one of my favorites. I usually add prosciutto which gives the pizza a great flavor. The crust is on the thin side which is how I like it. They do have take out so you can call ahead and pick it up on the way home.

Very disappointed with the "new" Zas, not much difference except the ridiculous ropes and curtain at he door is gone. The tables are bare, no salt, pepper, parmesan cheese or red pepper flake shakers on table. No more cloth napkins. No more bread served with a meal. The service was ok, wait staff could be found grouped at the bar chatting up a couple of men. Embarrassed at and for the female wait staff, wearing what appear to be underpants with tee shirts. When they bend over a table butt cheeks visible, not good for a family restaurant. Not impressed with menu or quality of food. Will not be back, too many really good restaurants in town, no need to dine at a so so establishment.

This was my first time back since they reopened and I was really disappointed. Za's had previously been one of my favorite restaurants; unfortunately, everything that made it a charming, casual, and tasty place to eat has been stripped during the remodel. The place takes minimalism to a new level, which left it feeling a bit cold--there aren't even salt and pepper shakers (or candles, flowers, something!) on the tables. I wasn't a fan of the weird rope thing but the whole place now just looks unfinished and generic. The service was... weird , confused, and rather off putting. The male servers were wearing Za's t shirts and shorts while the female servers and hosts were scantily clad. One of my three(!) servers looked as though she wasn't wearing any pants (very short shorts better suited to a beach under a long shirt) and the older person I was with was embarrassed every time the woman leaned over at the table behind us to put down food or drinks. There were also at least six servers standing around at the bar chatting with two men that I took to be the owner and/or managers, which made it feel a little like the diners were breaking up a staff party. The system for requesting something seemed to involve making eye contact with whoever happened to pass your table. My companion and I both ordered the chicken parmesan and were underwhelmed. The marinara sauce was very spicy and the whole entree came in a bowl with deep sides. It was extremely awkward attempting to cut a breaded chicken breast as it rested on a bowl of pasta and I had to ask for a plate. Breadsticks were extra (one came with the meal before) and were really needed to cut the spiciness of the sauce. Parmesan cheese had to be requested, which is odd for an Italian restaurant, and was doled out in one tiny plastic container with a lid, presumably to keep anyone from using too much? Nothing tasted fresh or special. Overall, this felt like some young man's idea of what a restaurant should be rather than someplace I actually want to spend any time at. We definitely won't be back as there are several other local Italian restaurants in town offering better food and a more welcoming atmosphere.

Blah! First time visit prompted by Free Times mention in "bite if the week". Nice patio, friendly and prompt service but my veggie pita and my partner's calzone were airport food court quality. Will try again but mike at FT needs to up his game.
