I take the family here once a week for lunch on Sat or after church on Sunday. Get the coupons from the papers and feed a family of 4 for $20.

Sandy's is a Columbia classic. I've been going for a while but today I tried a hot dog with pimento cheese and onions and it was AMAZING!

Good for what it is: an inexpensive hot dog joint. Don't go expecting gourmet options or good service. They'll give you your food and it'll be what you ordered, but nothing more. If you just want a hot dog, good place to go.

Not a huge fan of hot dogs, but this place makes pretty good ones. Got two slaw dogs (dog topped with chili, onions, slaw, ketchup and mustard) for about $6. Honestly they were some of the best hot dogs I've ever had, and the toppings were all delicious. Dogs were cooked well, and the buns were nice and fluffy. If you want a quick bite, this place is pretty good, and not too pricey.

Looks like an old school place, it's even called famous but it was mediocre at best. This is based off one visit so I might just be unlucky but the hot dog was barely warm and reminded me of cafeteria food - except with a ton of toppings; this was a fork and knife job. Maybe I'm just spoiled with the old school drive-in style hot dog of the north. This place has the old feel, but not the old quality.

Sandy's was a pleasurable childhood memory and today I decided to share the magic with hubby. It was clear as soon as we pulled up that this was not the best of the locations to choose. The building is extremely rundown and in need of major TLC. The Chili Dog was decent but the chili tasted like it could have come from a can. The hotdog itself was delicious. I tried to enjoy it, but honestly the sadness of the restaurant around me made it extremely difficult. As another reviewer put it, old school place lacking old school quality ingredients and pride. One day we may visit another location, but certainly not this one.

This is a Columbia institution. The 1/8 lb. is better than 1/4lb. dog. Best slaw in town! Get one dog all the way and one with slaw. Good for a quick filling lunch. Cheap and worth it. Banana split is legendary and enough for a table.

One word here...Disappointed! I like to check out hot dog joints anywhere and everywhere I can across the country, I've been to almost 100. Whenever I'm in a town I look for the local "Famous Dog", and I'm in Columbia so it's Sandy's. Sandy's indicates that they have several locations but this review concerns my visit to the Main St. spot. This place may have been a hotdog Mecca like 20 years ago but today it's just old and tired. It's one of those places that must have built a great reputation sometime in the distant past and it's been running on that rep ever since. Dark, dingy and run down, no one has invested a penny in this place in a long time. Peeling paint, poorly patched shabby wallpaper, and that general malaise that affects some places that are past it. As far as the dogs go, results were mixed. I had a regular size (as opposed to the 1/4lb Super version) "Famous Slaw Dog" and a regular size "Chicago Dog". Slaw Dog wasn't bad but definitely nothing to be famous about. The Chicago Dog was not so great at all. A true Chicago style dog is a beautiful thing but seems like no one here has ever actually been to Chicago. Overall I was really Disappointed.

I haven't had much of their food before but their ice cream sundaes are amazing! They give huge portions for the price and have a good variety of flavors and toppings. Def hit them up if your sweet tooth has you craving something sweet!

What can you say about hotdog?. They are what they are, but you can certainly improve a bit with some good condiments. I had the special chili dogs with mustard and onions. The chili was piled high, the onions were numerous, and the mustard was just right. Overflow was in evidence, so you probably would make another choice if feeding a five-year-old. However, for me it was over the top. Price was good too!

Good hot dogs- but I mean it's hard to mess a hot dog up! Very great ice cream though- cheap for a good amount and a lot of yummy flavors! I would go here for cheap and fast food! Took about 3 min to get my food! always pretty empty inside but check it out

I was excited to try Sandy's out and get a Chicago dog. I'm a Chicago native and have been searching everywhere for a place that could top Portillo's back home. Unfortunately Sandy's is not that place. Their service was very friendly, however, the hot dog was just okay. I've had better... Their "Chicago dog" was nothing like a true Chicago hot dog. I'm guessing this is the go-to place for chili dogs (which I didn't try) so maybe that's my fault... but if you want a super cheap, basic hot dog then you'll be fine. Their prices are extremely affordable, but I have issues with a hot dog place that doesn't serve fries!! When you eat a hot dog you want soda and fries... not a bag of chips. This threw me for a loop... but I guess the fine folks in Columbia like it this way. I'll pass on eating there. Their hot dogs were okay, but didn't hit the spot.

Food okay if you like burned hotdogs. No hamburgers available even though it is on the menu. The excuse was we only usually get 5 in when we get them. I would suggest a pass.

I saw Sandy's when I was in town a few weeks ago for business. The location is right on campus and they clearly demonstrate their support of the local college with decor inside. Thanks to a few Yelp reviews, I decided to try the Reuben Hot Dog as well as the Slaw Dog. First off, the price was decent. Even with a large soda thrown in, I definitely spent a lot less than expected. Second, the staff was pretty friendly, especially when they noticed it was my first time there. Third, there were cuties there! Don't know how attractive a guy scarfing two hot dogs is to a chick, but I always enjoy a beautiful girl's presence. So, the Reuben Dog was exactly what you would expect - a hot dog inside a bun with sour kraut, dressing, and cheese on top. It was good, not great, but good. I felt that the sour kraut was a little bland, but overall I liked it. The Slaw Dog contained cole slaw, chili, onions, and cheese on top of a hot dog and was unique tasting and pleasing as well. Again, it was good, but not great. I highly recommend if anyone is in the area, they check out Sandy's. While I know they won't win the "Best Hot Dog in the Country" award, it's definitely a place worth eating at.

This is a great place to eat hot dog. I love their chilly dog. This is my first choice for hot dog.

This place was pretty good, I like the location since it's right next to the state house on Main st., and it's next door to the Nickolodean so you can go old school and get a dog and shake before a movie. I tried both the Slaw Dog Supreme and the Chili dog, and I thought both were pretty good, though the chili didn't have much of a kick to it at all. The dogs themselves were all beef, which I think is a necessity, and the slaw was decent. A great addition to this place is the fact that they have a lot of ice cream to choose from as well if you want a dessert, plus they do splits and floats. A good place to go for something quick, easy, and chock full of americana.

Sandy's is an old Columbia local institution. You probably remember the closed locations (USC, Richland Memorial, Parklane) as easily as the ones still in business. The good news is not much has changed, including the brain-jarring red and white striped wallpaper. Sandy's dogs are still "So big! So good!" and they still serve up tons of great ice cream, too. Sandy's serves pure beef franks. Not someone else's, but wieners especially made for Sandy's. You can choose any dog from two sizes: 1/8 pound or 1/4 pound and they serve them up on supple, center-cut buns. They're famous for their slaw dogs which are served with mustard, chili, onions and slaw. You can also choose from above the Mason-Dixon line faves such as the Reuben dog, kraut dog, Chicago dog and others. One of the greatest things about Sandy's is cheese. Want to add cheese to your dog? First, you have to decide what kind: shredded cheddar, pimento, nacho cheese or sliced. They are as affordable and family-friendly as you remember and for most of our visit we noticed the fast-moving line was out to the door. When the Sandy's crew noticed the line backing up, they opened the other cash register just like you wish Wal-Mart would do on Saturday morning. And, as Debra knows, they always have great coupons in the newspaper. Plenty of parking, plenty of seating and they make your order fast, fast, fast. How the Dog Fight went down. Russell: Dog 1: Super Reuben dog, all the way Dog 2: Slaw dog, all the way Debra: Dog 1: Chili dog, chili only Dog 2: 1/2 Chili dog, chili only Jeff: Dog 1: Slaw dog, all the way Dog 2: Chili dog, all the way Dog 3: 1/2 Chili dog, chili only Wayne: Dog 1: Slaw dog, add shredded cheddar Julie: Dog 1: Chili dog, no onions Dog 2: Slaw dog, no onions Karolynn: Dog 1: Slaw dog The Dogs Today's Dog Fight crew was discerning, ranging from a chili dog purist (chili only, please) to a hardy, the-more-beef-the-better adventurer. Karolynn was enjoying her first hot dog in the area and was quite pleased with the pop of her tubesteak. Debra started out with one dog and quickly got back in line to get a second which she ended up sharing with Jeff. Jeff noted Sandy's wieners were well seasoned and had decent snap. Julie thought the bun at Sandy's was almost as good as the bun at LuLu's ... almost. The Toppings Wayne, who has always professed a special place in his heart for Sandy's slaw dog, really likes that you get your choice of cheese, too. He'd like to see Sandy's up the ante with mayo or a spicy aioli. Karolynn thought the slaw had a great crunch and Julie remarked the slaw portion was overly-generous, in a good way. Jeff, however, said the slaw portion was so big it nearly overwhelmed the rest of the dog. Russell, who can always be relied upon to rebel against any sort of conformity, made two bold choices from the menu. He regretted the order in which he ate them and suggests that you do not follow the Super Reuben with a lesser dog. He felt the slaw dog might have scored a bit higher had he'd eaten it first. With so many first-timers chowing down today, there was extra discussion around the scorecard. As she noticed Jeff scored Sandy's low (in her opinion) on artistic merit, Debra remarked, "What were you looking for? Balloons??" The Verdict You can still rely on this old favorite to deliver a good solid flavorful hot dog at a very affordable price, even if you don't have one of their coupons. According to Jeff, Dog Fight Director of Math and Spreadsheet Maintenance, Sandy's Famous Hot Dogs scored a 23.52 and just barely squeaked by LuLu's in the standings. The bottom line? If you want a good hot dog and are broke from buying too many Simply Savory Wild Dogs, head on over to Sandy's. With any luck, you can badger your lunch companion into sharing a banana split with you. Unless you're eating with Jeff. Cheap. Family Friendly. Good for a quick lunch with 2 hungry toddlers. It is what it says it is. I was intrigued by the cross-section of social classes--dressed to the nines down to flip flops & gym shorts. Good, not great. But good is often good enough. We'll probably be back when we are hungry.

I absolutely love and miss this amazing place! When my sister and I lived in Columbia we went to Sandys 3 times a month. It is a local classic. No hot dog place has beat them so far. You can get a choice of toppings of your choosing. Go here and you will not be disappointed!

What sums up my Columbia childhood: 1/3 lb all beef hot dog with pimento cheese chocolate milkshake made with chocolate ice cream w/ an extra scoop + whipped cream What sums up my dessert going USC days: gigantic titanic banana split (shared with the boy) No, I do not weigh 300 lbs. I love this place. It's classic Columbia and I miss it now that I'm gone. Plus, I saw George Stephanopolous here (at the downtown location) and got his autograph! :)

hotdogs, hotdogs, and more hotdogs. Lots of options, and all good. Oh, and then the ice cream and the handmade milk shakes. The decor is like some kind of diner from the 50s or 60s, nothing fancy but it's adaquate, and the food is just what you expect and want if you have a craving for a hotdog or two. Staff, well, they hire college students a lot so it's up and down, but then in a college town you expect that so no biggie. Worth a try.

OK, who doesn't like Sandy's? No, seriously. Who? You? Get out of my city, you joyless punk. For the younger set, Sandy's is the atmospheric equivalent of Waffle House only without all the postmodern self-consciousness. And also the food is different. Whereas you go to Waffle House with your friends because you're WAY TOO COOL to go to the popular kids' post-prom party (translation: you weren't invited), or because you got tired of the inferior indie-ness of the bowling alley (translation: they kicked you out for defacing the scoring machine), you go to Sandy's because you're having good old-fashioned fun with your chums and you want to buy a perfectly innocent, non-suggestive hot dog in a restaurant that looks like a circus tent. Yes, yes, yes.

Hot dogs are often overlooked as a normal meal item, but Sandy's changes that. They have a good variety of toppings as well as a full ice cream shop. Food is cheap and fast. Within walking distance of USC campus, and I believe they are open late.

I stopped in at Sandy's on a Saturday afternoon when literally nothing else was open downtown, so they scored some immediate points with me right there. (Seriously Columbia: nobody is open at 3pm on a Saturday in this neighborhood?) I eased into a nice booth by the window and took in the kitschy decor, which was quite appealing, and the other patrons. Lots of kids and families and couples hanging out for a shake, or an ice cream. I ordered the chili dog for an appetizing price ($2.39), which came with mustard, chili, and onions. The bun seemed a bit too soft and threatened to fall apart with the chili on top. The chili was great though and definitely complimented the dog. Overall a tasty bite for cheap. I also ordered a chocolate shake, which was good, but didn't necessarily blow me away. But shakes are pretty hard to mess up. I found Sandy's nice for a quick stop if you are craving a hot dog, and they are an apparent destination for their shakes and ice cream. Overall a good visit and a solid 3.5 stars, but I'll be generous and round up.
