I took my girlfriend here as a surprise. It was a great place! (The entrance door is to the left of Starbucks) We were greeted quickly by the hostess and sat at a nice table for two. The open layout of the restaurant was unexpected but turned out to be not so bad. We like to have more of a private table but it worked out decently. I would recommend making reservations, the place seemed to fill up quickly, as well as out on the patio. It's definitely a fine dining experience. The bartender made fantastic drinks. The Shrimp & Scallops was awesome. Do you know how hard it is to perfectly cook scallops?! Well it's quite difficult and these were perfection. The bill wasn't too bad considering we had an appetizer, 2 entrees and 4 drinks on the tab. Overall VERY good place. Noted: No female waitresses. No salt/pepper on tables.

This place was tremendous. Not only was the ambiance excellent, but the food was very good and portions extremely generous. Our server, Connor (spelling might be wrong) did a great job explaining the specials and was very knowledgeable about how the chef prepared all the different menu items. Compliments to the chef. For appetizer we split the crabcakes...very good. For the meal, my girl had the Sweet Tea Pork Chop -- that was off the hook. Pulled pork on top is excellent and the mashed potatoes that come with meal were very well prepared. The BBQ sauce was ridiculous. I had the Steak Frites...ribeye was perfectly cooked and, for once, I did NOT use any steak sauce or condiments on this. The vegetables were well prepared and the frites (fries) were excellent. This place is a great place to dine in Columbia...I WILL be going back.

Great meal last night! We sat on the patio in perfect weather. Both ordered filet mignon and were more than pleased with the meat, potatoes, and broccolini. We also split the calamari appetizer, which was nicely done as well. Probably one of the better steaks I've had in the past several years, although the plate was overall a tad salty. Loved the crust on the steak. Service was good with a nice young waiter, although he did forget to bring me my wine for several minutes. Saluda's doesn't fit my normal budget, but I would definitely return for a special occasion!

We have been there twice. Each time we had a pleasant experience. All the food served were well cooked and nicely garnished. My son liked Beef Carpaccio very much so we ordered two plates the second time we went. The waiters were attentive. If you could, you might want to go there after dusk and seat in the porch. I am completely confused as to how so many people are giving Saluda's bad ratings. Is the place under new management? Is there a new head chef? I personally think this place has always been topnotch. The last time I went was quite a while ago...but when I came across these reviews, I thought I should give my review. The atmosphere has a bit of an old-school gangsterness to it. Saluda's used to be an officers club and it was renovated. The food is mix of southern and modern cuisine. The tastes may not be familiar to some palates as the food can tend to be a bit upscale. Saluda's is one of my wife and I's favorite restaurants in Columbia. The food there is excellent, especially the filet: it is always cooked as ordered and tender enough to cut with a fork! There are only two negatives with Saluda's. First, the price. There is a difference between something being overpriced and something being expensive. I don't know if Saluda's is just expensive or if it's overpriced...but it is pricey. The second negative is the wait. If you go Friday or Saturday and you don't have reservations, you better show up before 6:45 or 7. Even with reservations after 7, you'll wait. The last time we went, we had reservations for four people at 7:30. We weren't seated until 8:20. All in all, great food and best steak in the city!

Ate for the first time tonight and was very pleased. In town for parents weekend before the USC-KY game. Food and service were tremendous. Our table had the calamari and lobster bisque as appetizers. Both were great. The sauce for the calamari was amazing. I want to try the BBQ fried green tomatoes next time. Entrees were scallops, crap cakes and I had the grouper special which had a butter nut cream sauce with grits. All were excellent. Look forward to returning. If you are in Columbia you need to try this great restaurant. As good as any around the country.

Came here for New Year's Eve with a large party, and wasn't disappointed. While the food did take some time, I chalked it up to our large group mostly, the experience was very good overall. Shrimp and grits were awesome and came with a ton of spicy sausage which is always a plus in my book. I'll definitely go back next time I'm in Columbia.

It was prom night, and there was a large group in a private room that apparently took the attention of the cook and the wait staff. Our server was nice, but disappeared and never came back. I had shrimp and grits. I liked it. It was creamy, and had shrimp, so it was okay. My mom had the fried green tomatoes and was unimpressed. Chef Blake Faries is one of Columbia's best, and the front-of-house staff has always been great, whether we have a sit-down meal or just come in for drinks and snacks at the bar. But it was the special night we had last Wednesday that prompts me to write this long-overdue review. But before the review, a word about one of the "additional tips" for which Yelp wants me to click a button. We had been to Saluda's for quite a few very happy evenings before we discovered that they actually *do* have a TV. The ambiance of the place is so quiet and lovely that you would never know. But one evening we stopped in for drinks and appetizers on a whim and decided to just sit at the bar. From there, we looked up and way to the right. Behold! ACC basketball was playing! (And if you tell the bartender you normal preferences, he'll happily get your opinion on a cocktail he's experimenting with, which is how I got to try their Revolver before it hit the menu.) But back to last Wednesday. My wife, Dr. SWMBO, has a number of food sensitivities that trigger her spastic colitis. We have gotten used to reciting the litany of her forbidden foods to our server so they can steer us away from hidden ingredients (like the now-ubiquitous roasted red peppers). On a couple of slower nights at Saluda's, our server has come back from the kitchen and asked if it would be OK with us if Chef prepared something special for her. The results were fantastic, but she has felt just a bit guilty about putting anyone to any special trouble. (I have a hard time convincing her that chefs like to experiment and vary what they're doing, and the current culture of people demanding special treatment and then bitching about every little thing on social media has only increased her own anxiety about being a good guest.) So, as our 31st anniversary approached I knew I had to thread the needle of finding her a very good meal but not making her feel guilty about "putting anyone out." And then I remembered the times that Chef Blake had created something special for her with what he had on hand. So, on Tuesday morning, I sent an e-mail with the long litany of forbidden foods and a request for reservations Wednesday evening. I figured that plenty of warning and a chance to either ask us to take her sensitive tummy elsewhere or to plan ahead for it would alleviate The Doctor's guilt. The results were amazing. Chef Blake created a tasting menu for SWMBO that ran from appetizer to dessert. * Appetizer: Goat cheese stuffed figs with candied pecans, dried cherries, a dusting of basil, and a smoked EVOO-white balsamic reduction * Salad: blanched long julienned carrots with bleu and feta cheeses, white raisins, pickled onions, pine nuts and EVOO (not a single leafy green on the plate) * Entree: roasted peeled tomatoes in a made-to-order sauce over rice noodles, with Shitake mushrooms and roasted red onions, topped with eggplant fries. * Dessert: lemon sorbet over sliced strawberries. It was just what the Doctor would have ordered had she known she could. I *just* ordered from the menu: beef empanadas followed by the sweet-tea-brined pork chop (on a bed of garlic mashed potatoes and garnished with pulled pork, BBQ glaze, and bleu cheese cole slaw) followed by the chocolate/peanut bombe. Our server was Brandon, who knew when to show up and when to leave us alone, and was just the right mixture of friendly, personable, and invisible. It was a lovely, leisurely dinner, and we can't thank Saluda's enough for it.

My husband and I had dinner here for restaurant week last night. I hesitate to even give one star. The appetizers were decent but the meal went down hill from there. Our server kept referring to us as "we" which was irritating to say the least. And are "we" ready to order came after having the menus for about a minute. The service in general was rushed, it was obvious she just wanted to turn the table as quickly as possible. I had the sweet tea pork chop with what was supposed to be garlic mashed potatoes but ended up being some bizarre "Israeli cous-cous" that had the taste and consistency of tapioca pearls from bubble tea. I didn't eat more than the initial bite. There was also a smear of bbq sauce under the cous cous that tasted distinctly like bottled. The broccoli on top was under cooked on the stem and overcooked on the top and had no flavor. The pork chop was over done and also tasteless, not a hint of the sweet tea flavor to be found. I ate half and gave the other half to my husband. He ordered the shrimp and grits which was a disaster as well. The shrimp were rubbery and overcooked. The grits had the consistency of elmer's paste glue and tasted just as bad. For dessert we ordered the tiramisu and the warm chocolate cake. The tiramisu was dry and had no flavor. The warm chocolate cake was ice cold in the middle, close to frozen and it looked like a lopsided brownie muffin. I had one bite, my husband had one bite of the tiramisu and we left the rest. Had a glass each of the Simi Cabernet which at $9 a glass was the least expensive on the menu. It sucked. I've had better wine from an 8 dollar bottle from Trader Joes. Given the prices I expected a much better experience than I received. Don't waste your money, there are several better restaurants in the Columbia area for those prices.

I made reservations for this place based on reviews and pics. I found it well worth the trip. We live about 35 minutes away from Columbia but for our 12th wedding anniversary dinner, Saluda's is by far worth the trip. Kevin was our server. Friendly, knowledgeable and let us try a couple wines before we chose. My husband had the ribeye special and I had the grouper special. Both were fabulous! Definitely recommend for a special dinner or just a nice evening out.

Our meal was delicious! The quality and preparation was well above average. It's nice to find someplace in Columbia that is not a chain or Sports Bar. My husband got the Filet and commented that it was a much better price and quality than the Ruth's Chris in Columbia. My seared shrimp and scallops were delicious and very fresh considering we weren't on the coast (where we live). The bread and honey butter is worth the splurge on carbs, but you have to ask for it. The atmosphere was white table cloth, no scenery and decent decor. The service was above average and our waiter was very helpful! The front door is a little difficult to find - make sure you don't go up the fire escape and through the outdoor dining area. Parking is tight, but they do have valet service.

I hate to give this place three stars, but there were a few things I couldn't get over. To start their food is extremely salty to my taste(and I don't mind salt!). You also have to ASK for bread. To most people that isn't so bothersome, but if you don't know to ask you don't get any. They should at least offer. Otherwise, I do like the ambiance, we sat outside both visits and really enjoyed the view. The portions are very generous and the service was great(we had the same server both visits). We got free champagne for our anniversary, which was nice, but that still doesn't wash the salty taste from my mouth. Both visits here I've used a groupon/yelp deal, I don't think I would pay full price here. It's a good restaurant, just not great.

I showed up around 8:10pm with a party of 3. I didn't have a reservation but thought I would try anyway. When the maitre DI approached us and asked if I had a reservation, I acknowledged that I didn't. She politely told me that they could not accommodate me at all for the evening. As I left, I pulled out my phone and went to the open table app. As it turned out, I was able to make a reservation 15 minutes later at Saluda's. I went downstairs and had a Starbucks. 15 minutes later, I returned and told her I was there for my reservation. They seated me immediately. Not a very smart Maitre DI, I would have tipped her had she worked me in on my initial attempt instead she got nothing. Food was good but the lack of attempting to accommodate me initially will always be in my memory of the night, doubtful I will go there again because of the snobbish attitude that they displayed.

Nice upscale dining in the heart of Five Points. The food is good, but for some reason some items were just way too salty when we went, like the Lobster Bisque and the Shrimps and Scallops. The fried calamari with banana peppers was good. Bread and honey butter was ok, but nothing special. I had the aged grilled ribeye over sweet potato puree (forgettable) and topped with fried oysters. The steak was a nice, juicy medium rare and I enjoyed it very much. The trouble is, after the soups, we waited a good 45-50 min. for our entrees. It wasn't even a busy night so I don't understand what caused such a delay. Nice ambiance and mostly good service, though a bit overpriced based on the overall experience. Willing to give it another try.

Food and service were excellent. Nice selection of wines. The only issue was a mix-up with the order- I was supposed to have a filet mignon topped with crab cake and instead received a ribeye. The steak was excellent, however, not what I thought I was getting. The waiter was apologetic, although I never got a clear answer as to whether he had misinformed me during his recitation of the specials, or if they were out of filet. Regardless, our meals were great and we will return to dine at Saluda's. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant.

This restaurant is by far the best one I have visited since coming to Columbia. For appetizers, my wife had the calamari while I had the meat and 3 cheeses platter. I don't eat seafood, but my wife LOVED the calamari. Normally when she gets calamari at other restaurants, it starts out crispy, but by the time she finishes eating it it loses its crispiness. No so with the calamari we got here. She said it was crispy and delicious from the first bite to the last. My platter was also good. For our main course, my wife had the shrimp and scallops while I had the filet mignon. My steak was like butter, it practically melted in my mouth. The potatoes that came with it were like silk, and they tasted so delicious with the truffle butter that came with the dish. It really was one of the best steak dinners I have ever had. My wife also raved about her dish. For dessert, we go the chocolate souffle. Again, one of the best desserts we have ever had. In addition, the service was great. The waiter was attentive, but not overly so. We used the $20 for $10 voucher we purchased from Yelp and the waiter was fine with it. I'm not sure that I buy what the other reviewer said about the server groaning and whatnot. All in all, it was a great experience. Just to give you some perspective, my wife normally doesn't like American food or Western food in general (she prefers Asian cuisine). However, she said that our meal was one of the best restaurant meals she has ever had, American, Asian, or otherwise. Definitely not cheap, but if you are looking for a place to go for a romantic dinner I would certainly recommend Saluda's.

I have a couple of favorite restaurants, and my loyalty to their staffs prevents me from calling any meal "the best" but my dinner with four hungry relatives at Saluda's was as good as anything I've eaten in years. It's restaurant week, so I went with the gnocchi and sweet tea pork chop from that menu rather than the osso buco, my usual standard setter for a new restaurant. Fortunately, another dedicated meat eater had the shank, so I had the opportunity to taste it, and it was delicious. The pork chop, though, was perfect and served with a delightful lagniappe; delicious pulled pork. The gnocchi was wonderfully satisfying with a delicious sauce, peas and bits of crunchy bacon. Service was relaxed and professional, the wine list is reasonably priced and filled with familiar favorites, and the tiramisu was very good. I also had a bite of a peanut butter and chocolate dessert that all by itself would be worth a visit. All in all, the kind of dining experience for which we hope but seldom find.

I enjoyed my evening at Saluda's immensely. From the moment we walked in the staff was very accommodating. We did have reservations, since we were a large party. Pros: The food was outstanding. The appetizers were a wonderful mix of very well paired cheese and other items. The warm spinach salad was a delicacy that I will do my best to recreate at home! The Fillet was perfectly prepared and literally melted in my mouth. The asparagus was prepared in a superior way that I will master in my own kitchen! The portions were large but turned out just right, so I could enjoy my meal, but not feel like a total glutton as I walked out the door. The chef and owner were both humble, professional and exceptionally accommodating. Extensive wine list. Good variety on the menu! Cons: The servers were a little slow and not exceptionally attentive (water glass empty several times for 10 minutes). That being said, I was part of a large group so the server had his hands full. If we asked for anything it was brought quickly. If you are the kind of person (like me) that expects superior service with no flaws, you will not find it here. You will however find real, caring and warm people here that make it easy to overlook the lack of attentiveness. Overall, I am glad I experienced Saluda's and their food. I will not go back soon because for the price I expect excellent service!

the restaurant is located upstairs from the starbucks. definitely one of the best "fine-dining" options in columbia. non-stuffy and modern decor with dark-wood tables and strategic ambient lighting. wait staff is pleasant and friendly. our dining company was a mix of couples on dates and groups on business. i prefer the tables by the bay windows which give you a fab view of the 5 points fountain. parking can be awful (metered street shared with many surrounding bars) so valet is an option. the food is new southern. the seafood risotto is very rich and has LARGE chunks of lobster. they don't skimp on the lobster in the lobster mac&cheese either. they sometimes offer fresh oysters outside of the gulf area which i always appreciate. the ostrich & foie gras is worth a try as well. i can vouch they make a great grey-goose vodka gimlet. always a solid delivery. can't wait for an excuse to go back. edit: i do not recommend their private dining room. i thought the menu was extremely limited in the private room. we went for an educational meeting. for some reason the servers were very noisy and loud (stomping footsteps, clattering of utensils and plates). it was distracting to those of us trying to listen to a speaker.

I have lived in South Carolina for over 12 years and from the first time I came in to Saluda's and walked up those stairs it has been my Favorite restaurant in Columbia and one of my favorite in the whole state. Last time we went was our anniversary 2 weeks ago and the food, service, atmosphere, and attention to detail was what I have become enjoy through the years. We ate inside due to the heat but my wife's fillet and my sea bass wrapped in smoked salmon were both perfectly prepared and tasted excellent! Granted this was during the week and the place was not packed (but busy) which may account for such good service but all the other times I have been here have been equally as memorable. The only thing I would try to change or add would be an elevator to eliminate the need to climb the stairs!

I went during Restaurant Week, and was worried about having to wait, but once I found parking (in notoriously hard-to-park 5 Pts), we were seated immediately . They didn't bring out the Restaurant Week menu until we specifically asked for it, but they weren't snobbish about it at all! The service was prompt, friendly, and everything you could expect. The salads were standard fare, with a blue cheese wedge and a house salad that was cleverly dressed up with some sharp crumbled cheddar, nuts, apples, and the like. The main entrees of filet mignon and scallops, which sounded so good on the menu, were somewhat disappointing. The scallops with sweet potato something-or-other were very good, but a tad too salty. The steak was overcooked (well-done, instead of medium as ordered), and the bed of onion and mystery items was overcooked and in the dimly lit restaurant, I had no idea what chewy, burnt thing I was eating, so I gave up and just focused on the steak. Even though it was overcooked, it was still tasty. The desserts were rather bland. I'd heard that this was the best restaurant in town, but either I came on an off night, or they're slipping!

Saluda's website says it's Columbia's "premier location for cuisine, wine and service." This past Thursday night, my wife and I and another couple discovered this to be true. Well, at least, the cuisine and service; we brought our own wine. We also brought a Groupon, which I highly recommend. After an enjoyable trip through the streets and neighborhood surrounding Saluda's looking for a parking place, we were quickly seated. Our waiter was courteous and knowledgeable and made us feel right at home. He decanted our wine at the table, pouring it in gingerly so that not a single drop was wasted. The best word I can think of to describe the service would be "unobtrusive". My back was turned to the dining room, so I cannot honestly say how many times he checked on our table. He did keep the water glasses filled and checked to see if there were any problems with the food. (There were not.) Other than that, he did not make any additional appearances. He answered all our questions to our satisfaction without attempting to be "chummy" or trying to impress us with his culinary knowledge. Our Groupon allowed for two appetizers. My wife and I ordered the crab cakes, and our friends got the calamari, although when they arrived, we shared. Both were delicious, and the portions were generous. My wife said that these were the best crab cakes she has ever had, and I had to agree. I found them to be dense, in that there was a lot of crab meat. Our female guest marveled at how "light" they were. Could we both be right? Yes. Lots of crab meat, but not weighed down with too much of any other ingredient. The calamari portion was huge, but then I realized that there were also fried banana peppers mixed in. Both were good, though nothing special. The sweet Thai chili sauce was very tasty. We each ordered something different for our entrees, and no one was disappointed. Our guests ordered the sweet tea pork chop and the shrimp and grits. My wife ordered the shrimp and scallops, and I got the 14 ounce rib eye. My friend took one bite of the pork chop and had to put his fork down. It was that good. The four of us each entered our own little Nirvana. The conversation dwindled, and the moans of pleasure took over. I ordered my steak medium rare, and it was cooked perfectly. It was served atop a small mound of garlic mashed potatoes. The influence of garlic was minimal also, but they were very creamy. The steak was the star, especially since it was smothered in gorgonzola "fondue". As far as presentation goes, the steak was the winner at our table. Everyone commented on how big it was, and I reminded them that the menu said "fourteen ounces". The steak was not thick, but it was tender and flavorful; one of the best steaks I've had when eating out. My wife was happy that I got the steak, as she got several bites. I, of course, reciprocated by snatching a bite of scallop off of her plate. It, too, was cooked perfectly: seared on the outside, as soft as butter on the inside. The updated menu we were given paired the shrimp and scallops with "Forbidden rice" and asparagus. I have never seen black rice before. My wife said, you've GOT to try this. It was very tasty; my wife said it could almost be described as "al dente". Our server told her that it is seasoned with cumin and coriander. They definitely need to make it one of their standard side orders! We were offered desserts, but the portions were large enough so that we were quite satisfied by the time our plates were cleaned. Speaking of plates, the ones they use at Saluda's are pretty cool. At least two of the entrees were served on what looked to be a ceramic cutting board. Intriguing. The atmosphere at Saluda's is relaxed yet sophisticated. Dark hardwood floors definitely give it an upscale feel. At one end of the dining room there is a couch and companion chair, as if inviting you to sit and chat for a while longer after your meal. I confess that I was too busy concentrating on food, wine, and conversation to pay detailed attention to our surrounding, but it is neither stark nor cluttered. We were also seated by the window so that we could watch the outside world go from sunset to darkness. On a business trip in Columbia and our group stopped in for dinner at Saluda's. The decor was very nice and we were not at all rushed while we settled in and discussed the menu. Our server suggested the Oyster BLT and BBQ Fried Green Tomato appetizers and they were both fantastic. Lobster bisque soup to start and the beef tenderloin as the entree made for an excellent dinner. The service was wonderful throughout the meal - I can't understand the recent negative reviews based on the service here.

For Columbia, this is as good as it gets. Located in the heart of Five Points, this place is a gem among nice boutiques and close to "the real" USC campus. The views are spectacular as palms abound and fountains soothed, the ambiance is superb: wood floors, picture windows, ceiling fans, classic-looking bar, dimly lit, and a good noise level with great jazz. The menu is pricey but you get what you pay for. I dined with one of my good friends, an 82-year-old botanist. I started with the iceberg wedge, which could have been a little fresher in the lettuce department but it was good. I dined on the shrimp and grits and it was mouthwatering. The shrimp were fat & juicy, good spice (not too hot), a nice smooth creamy and not too heavy on the brandy. It was topped with a fried green tomato which was a nice touch. My friend had the fliet and it was like butter (yes, I sampled a few pieces). This is definitely a power lunch, Mother's/Valentine's Day, special occasion restaurant. The wait staff was excellent also.

Great Location. Crappy Parking situation. The night we went the valet had called in sick and there was no where to park. I walked in and asked about the Valet and the manager told me the situation, but they would make a place for us to park, and they did. The food was incredible and the Cosmopolitan I had from the bar is absolutely the best I have ever had. Our server had a great personality, and made the meal that much better. My husband and I shared the baked brie appetizer, and it was beyond a shadow of a doubt the best baked brie I have ever had. AMAZING. My only complaint was that my steak was over done, but the sauce that came with it more than made up for it. It still melted in my mouth. You can dine inside or outside and they also have a space for private parties.

The wife and I came for our anniversary dinner. It was a great choice. I had the fillet mignon and she had the ribeye special. The steaks were cooked perfectly. Very, very good. They have Bordeaux wine, which made me happy. Our total was right at $100, which is a good price for this quality of dinning. Great restaurant.

I like to nitpick, I make it a point to especially when writing reviews so people know what to expect (which is the whole point of Yelp, right?) while also giving credit where it's due. Try as I might, I really can't say anything negative at all about my experience here. Absolutely fantastic. I came for a dinner party of about thirty people, we had the upstairs reserved just for us, so you have a idea of the setting. Saludas gives a very up-class and chic impression. Normally this feels sterile to me but two things pulled me away from that - 1) the staff was both amiable and professional while still actually being people capable of having a real conversation 2) Great art! I don't think I've ever been engaged by a restaurants art. Upon further inspection all of what i saw was by an artist named Wayne Rogers and I give them credit for their choice for sure. The food was delicious!! Try as I might I couldn't find anything wrong. House salad with blackberries and pecans.. Swordfish in a lemon sauce beautifully cooked devoid of the oily tough nature you can sometimes find with sword fish.. On the contrary it was crisp and moist, excellent. I had the pleasure of sampling shrimp and grits in what seemed like a red pepper and cheddar based sauce and it was also first rate. If grits were prepared like that all the time I'd quickly become a fan. For dessert the only option was tiramisu which I'm not a huge fan of as a general rule, so it would be unfair for me to comment on. The entire party shared similar feelings. From start to finish I have nothing to complain about, Saludas is an establishment that knows what it's about and hits every mark. This is the pinnacle of my food experience during my time in South Carolina.

I ate at Saluda's last summer with friends, had a good meal and enjoyed the ambiance, so I thought it would be a great place to celebrate a friend's belated birthday and recent business success. After moving back to the South four years ago, I have tried many a dish of shrimp & grits from Raleigh to New Orleans. The version I was served last night at Saluda's was the worst I've ever eaten. I could not finish it. Instead of grits, the rubbery shrimp languished in a gloppy, inedible mass of what appeared to be a gelatinous pink mayonnaise. Where were the grits? Were the two small slices of deep-fried breaded somethings added as decoration intended as the grits? One guest's seared scallops also suffered a similar tasteless, unfinishable fate. Only the guest of honor finished his chicken-fried duck breast. While the fried eggplant appetizer du jour was excellent, as was the cheese and meat sampler, the raw and fried oysters that topped the appetizer menu were not being served because, as the waitress put it, "they didn't look quite right." Why were they still on the menu? The tiramisu that our guest of honor had was bland, totally lacking the traditional zing of rum. Also the frozen peanut-chocolate parfait was frozen so hard that it shattered all over the plate when we tried to dig into it. Needless to say, I was very disappointed in this now last outing to Saluda's. I write this as finish my second round of Alka-Seltzer today, hoping to quell the gastric distress that is all too frequently reminding me of last night's terrible dish of shrimp and grits. At $169 (we brought our own Caneros wine), last night's meal was indeed an expensive mistake.

My husband made reservations and we were fortunate to catch a beautiful summer day that enabled us enjoy the view from outside seating. The feel,staff and appearance of this place is a three year rating in itself. I ordered the sweet tea pork chop but substituted sweet potatoes for garlic mashed. The blue cheese cole slaw was a nice boost of flavor. I'm not a huge thick cut meat person but this particular meal was sti good. My husband had steak with garlic mash and a crab butter of some kind. He ate the entire steak and it was a pretty good size. My bite of his was tender. Our appetizer was delicious as well. The crab cake! Everything was so wonderful we missed the fact we never ordered drinks. Just water. The staff were pleasant. Didn't feel the usual awkwardness in those type restaurants. Great experience! (I THINK my pork hop may have been undercooked towards the end and that's the only reason I didn't give 5 stars)

However, there is always a good crowd and it gets pretty great reviews here and on other sites, so I seem to be in the minority here. A hidden gem, often forgotten about but never disappointing. One of the best restaurants in town without a doubt. A cute little place in the heart of Five Points but don't let that scare you off. Classy atmosphere and nice ambiance. However, we weren't impressed by the food. We had the crabcakes appetizer, which was just okay. It was a bit heavy on the horseradish flavor for my liking. For dinner, I had the shrimp and grits, and it was so heavily cream-based that it left me feeling "ugh". Also, the grits were difficult to really taste, as they were scattered in the sea of heavy cream. My friend had the country fried duck breast which was better, but tasted slightly undercooked. The fregola sarda mac and cheese that accompanied the duck was also undercooked and was marred by the mayonnaise flavor of the bleu cheese slaw. Despite the food, the service was excellent. We sat outside and the waiters were very attentive and made sure we had plenty of water. Great place to bring family or a date.

Service, while friendly and warm, wasn't especially skillful. The restaurant has a fairly large dining room. I mention this because service was pretty slow the night we were there and I'd hate to imagine what happens on busy nights. It took so long between the arrival of the wine and the arrival of any sort of food (bread to start would have been nice). The outside seating when the weather is nice is a great spot to dine. Food wise... highs and lows. LOW: Oysters. Not served on ice and maybe it was just the delay of coming out, but they were a bit warmish by the time they got to our table. Which was fine, I'm sitting here healthy and well, but at the same time: no ice? Who does that? HIGH: Fried duck. I mean, why not? Fried is awesome. Duck is awesome. It's also served on a bed of cheesy israeli couscous. What's not to love?

Let me start out by saying Saluda's is still one of my favorite, if not my favorite upscale dining establishment in Columbia. Made reservations through open table for 8, showed up at 7:30 to reserve a spot on the outdoor patio. As we expected (especially since we were so early) we waited at the bar until an available spot opened up outside. We had a groupon for 38 for one app and two entrees plus $10 off. Not bad at all. If you're looking for a wide craft beer selection you may be disappointed. This is not somewhere to get beer. They had about 5 or so on tap, but I only asked about the ales. The had a rye pale ale and Columbia's own River Rat double IPA. Not my favorite, which is fine, I just wasn't in the mood for wine. The wine list, though I've never ordered off it, seems to be pretty good. We got the charcuterie board (meat and 3). Wished is came with more salami because it was so good. The three cheeses were superb and crostinis were charred at tips, just how I like it. I ordered the Osso bucco, he, the shrimp and grits. Lotta fat on the Osso bucco but besides that. some of the most tender, melt-in-your-mouth lamb I've ever had. The au jus was meh. Now the sides (brussel sprouts and sweet potato pruree) were each on their own yummy but the plate together did not really go together, which was a disappointment. Service was good. Not spectacular as has been in the pass and wait or had difficult time remembering the cheeses and such. Shrimp and grits was amazing as always, but no pancetta. Huge disappointment. All in all, Saludas is still my go-to fine dining in Columbia and won't hold one so/so trip against all the other spectacular times I've been there.

Saluda's is a great date night place. The aesthetics are definitely more appealing than Garibaldi's with the outdoor patio (but the food is a little better at Garibaldi's). The hardwood floors and seating arrangement make this a nicer establishment than most places. The service is outstanding and the server I had was well versed on the menu. There is an extensive wine list, if you enjoy a good glass of wine. This is definitely a restaurant worth trying if you haven't been. I recommend ordering the calamari for an appetizer. For my entree, I ordered the swordfish (a special) and it was pretty good, considering I'm typically not a huge fan of swordfish. My boyfriend the sweet tea pork chop and he stated that it wasn't quite as tender as expected, but had a good hickory barbecue flavor. All the food is presented wonderfully.

Top Shrimp and Grits: My wife and I went on a random Monday night and got our seating of choice with no wait (outside balcony). The dirty martini drink pour was very weak, however it was a very good martini! My wife got the grouper over grits and it was very good. Let me preface this by saying that I have eaten shrimp and grits every where it has been offered. I have ordered them as north as Maryland to as far south as the Caribbean, the shrimp and grits served here easily take the title! They are with out a doubt the best that I have ever had (probably due to the sauce). My boyfriend and I went here for our one year, and it was fantastic! We had the meat and cheese appetizer and wow it was delicious. Also, I'm not the biggest fan of wine, but I had the Zinon Moscato and I was hooked! For the entree I had the filet mignon and it was the best filet I've ever had! It came with delicious mashed potatoes and broccolini. I usually cannot finish a meal, but I ate every bite because I just couldn't put my fork down. My boyfriend got the the sweet tea pork which came with bbq pork on top of it and mashed potatoes and cole slaw. He very much enjoyed his meal as well! Saluda's isn't the cheapest place to eat for a broke college student, but the quality of the food is excellent and definitely worth the price!

I took my wife on a date here for the first time last night, and we were both super impressed with everything--food, ambiance, service, etc. The beef carpaccio, salad special, fish special, and rib-eye were amazing! In fact, the steak was probably the best I've ever had. The wine selection was great, I had a tasty Bordeaux. We were walk-ins, so had to sit inside as the outdoor tables were taken, so recommend calling in reservations ahead of time.

I had a wonderful dining experience here! The entire staff was very friendly. We used the Groupon deal for an appetizer and two entrees. The waiter was very knowledgeable and willing to explain any questions we had and make recommendations for us. Also, my glass of water was never less than half full. The staff was very attentive. We made our reservation for a Thursday night at 5:15pm and it was not to busy or crowded. Atmosphere was great. Service was good and having the option to sit outside was a plus. I was in Columbia visiting family and was taken to Saludas for dinner on Saturday. We sat outside on the patio and even though the weather was very warm, the fans helped make it comfortable. We were seated immediately upon arriving for our 8 pm reservation - a great start. Beth was our waitress and she set the tone for a fantastic dinner. She was attentive, patient, personable and willing to offer advise without being pushy. The timing of the meal was also leisurely which I find to be a major plus and hard to find these days. After each course we had time to sip our drinks and chat, then as we would be thinking of our next course, it would arrive. We started with the calamari which had a little Thai twist to it - chili oil and peppers. Then we had salads the special house and the wedge. Both were excellent, especially the crisp pork belly on the Special. I had the grouper and my daughter had the lamb. The lamb was cooked perfectly. The grouper was also cooked perfectly and very fresh. All the sides were perfect, especially the grits. For desert, Beth suggested the parfait type concoction that was the Chefs special. Not sure what was in it but it was sweet and creamy and the perfect ending to our dinner. We made a point of thanking Beth for the wonderful service. When you receive excellent service it really stands out and makes for a great evening. Can't wait to return. J

Excellent food and service in a great location with a decent wine list (especially if you are a fan of California). We tried three appetizers. The PEI mussels were delicious (one of the specials). The eggplant "fries" were interesting and also really well done. The lamb osso bucco was excellent. Savory and tender as it should be. The fish special (grilled grouper) proved to be a favorite at the table. Dessert also was not to be missed with the favorite being the molten chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. The raspberry, peach tart was also good, but dominated by the raspberry as I feared it would be. The peanut butter gelato with milk chocolate coating and caramel center was also amazing for Reese's peanut butter cup fans! Overall a really enjoyable evening.

If I could give 6 stars for dinner at Saluda's, I would. My husband and I met some friends for dinner here on a weekend and were enraptured by the excellent service, great wine pairing recommended to us by the waiters, and, above all, the nearly perfect dinner. My husband had a steak and shrimp entree that was so enticing, I couldn't help but distract him so I could sneak a few pieces of my own. The red wine we had from the Rhône Valley met the strong flavors of our dinner perfectly, neither overwhelming or overwhelmed. To give you an idea of how good dinner was, we even made room for dessert which is a rare treat. Don't even read further than these reviews, just go to Saluda's and know that your about to experience a fantastic evening of delicious decisions.

I eat out often. This restaurant was an interesting experience. Never have I received such bad service in any restaurant in Columbia. I finally had to meet the manager, he stated that I feed 400 people a day. I can not worry too much about a table of 7. I guess since the tip was automatically included they didn't care. The food was fantastic, worth going just for that. The service could have been better - slow, not "around", not imformative about why we were being given slow service. Had we been paid appropriate attention we would have spent more there and enjoyed the time a bit more. We sat outside as it was a nice spring evening. A carpenter bee hit my date in the face. We mentioned that to the wait staff and his response was "yeah, they are real bad right now". I was looking for a "We have called an exterminator and they will be here tomorrow" or "I will definitely report this to my management to have them look into it". My husband and I have been to saludas several times and have always had a fantastic experience from the service through to the food. Tonight Brandon was our server, he did an excellent job providing the best service we have had in Columbia. We ordered the calamari appetizer, wedge salad and fillet special all to share. We wanted it in 3 courses and that's exactly how it came, not rushed, perfect timing. The fillet was outstanding and they split it really nicely for us. Even though it was a 90 degree june evening, we sat outsized and it we'd very comfortable with the breeze and fans. Love everything about saludas, definitely try if you are looking for a memorable meal.
I would love to have reviewed Saluda's, but I never got anything to eat. I was visiting from Seattle and had made an online reservation. I arrived on time after paying the lot down the street $5 to park. The hostess told me that there would be a wait -- probably around 20 minutes -- which seemed a little excessive given that I had a reservation and given that there were 5 open tables (most still with dirty dishes on them). I'd heard good things, so I figured I'd wait it out and went to the bar. Apparently the other people who were waiting (despite also having reservations) were all there, too. There was only one bartender, and the poor guy just couldn't keep up with orders from the tables and also deal with the people at the bar who were waiting for tables. I finally went back and sat for a few minutes on the bench by the hostesses. After waiting for half an hour past my reservation time, I asked them to cancel my reservation and I left. The person who I think was the main hostess was full of excuses and blame (saying that management is responsible for the online bookings, so don't shoot the messenger). She was completely inept when it came to any sort of customer service. If Saluda's is going to take reservations, they really need to manage that process much, much more closely. I understand having a short wait when I have a reservation and things are busy, but this was crazy. It seemed like they were incredibly under-staffed, and no one really cared. Once you tick off your customers who go to the trouble of making a reservation by treating them poorly, they will NEVER come back. After leaving Saluda's, I had a great meal (and some really good service) at Cola's.

The hubs and I enjoyed outdoor seeting on a cool evening! The dinners will cost a pretty penny, but the items served with truffle oil were delish!!! I followed the instructions of a fellow yelper and asked for bread - they won't bring it to the table unless directly asked. They made a good dirty martini, which left the hubs in a happy place. I ordered an ahi tuna special, but the tuna was a large chunk of fish instead of (what I would expect to see) a more thin, longer type of piece - try figuring out how to make that description work for you..... We'd visit again, but I won't be ordering the tuna unless they tell me it isn't a huge glob of fish.

This place is EXCELLENT. I have been there twice. The crab cakes are superb. The fried duck was the best duck I've ever had. The dishes are well thought out and coordinated with delicious and complementary sides. The food is always cooked perfectly and the courses executed in a timely manner without making you feel rushed. The service is always great. As someone who works in the service industry myself, I was impressed with their poise. The servers are also very down to earth, and lack that air of snootiness that sometimes happens with higher end restaurants. The servers are clearly very professional and are knowledgeable about the menu and specials. The only things I would change is I would like to see a few unique house cocktails be featured. The bartenders seem to be very seasoned and I would like to see them showcase some mixology talent. Their liquors and wines they feature have great variety, though. I wish the parking was better, but the restaurant IS in five points, so not much can be done about that. Saluda's is awesome! I can't wait to go back.

Saluda ' is by far my favorite fine dining restaurant in Columbia. I absolutely love what Chef Blake Faries creates. It's reasonably priced and excellent. Good wine list if you drink, lots of cocktail options. The fried green tomato app with bbq pulled pork, topped with Bleu cheese slaw is literally worth killing someone over. I usually go for steak which they have some fantastic cuts and accompaniments, like sauce bearnaise, black truffle butter, port demi glace, but half the time I find myself leaning towards his infamous sweet tea brine bone in pork chop, which is outstanding. I assure you that whatever you order will be well worth it. The environment and dining room is beautiful, with patio seating overlooking 5 points and the fountain. There aren't many options for "better" restaurants in the Columbia area so I was hopeful for Saluda's. Went a few months ago with 2 other couples and none of us were impressed. The food was average at best and the service was below average. The food was far too salty and when I pointed this out to the server - not so much as a complaint but as to inform the kitchen - he basically shrugged his shoulders. Nope - not worth it. Oak Table, Mr Friendly's - - much better options!

Saluda's is excellent. Everytime I've gone there Ive been well taken care of. Their regular bartender is great and very friendly, as is their wait staff. The chef makes delicious food and the ambience is great for a date night out, a special occasion dinner with your family, or a fun night on the town with your friends. While it might be out of some people's price ranges, they offer deals and groupons on a regular basis--just remember to tip your server for the full price! :) Anyway, one of my favorite places to get a drink or a meal; I highly recommend it.

I was very disappointed in our meal. I ordered my steak well, no pink. It was very pink, not just in the middle. My husband's pork chop was raw in the middle. The waiter made a comment that the rules on cooking pork had changed and it didn't have to be cooked as well anymore. This was raw and cold to the touch still. My drink was empty most of the time and our bill took forever almost making us late for the concert. Our bill was over $80 for 2 people and we ate less than half our food. The best part of our experience was the valet parking. If we never eat here again it will be too soon.

Thus is one of our favorite "nice" restaurants in Columbia. I rarely crave steak, but when I do, I know where to go! We've tried most of their appetizers as well and there is always something for everyone in our party. Our out-of-town guests have enjoyed some Southern fare here, usually followed by a perfectly cooked steak. The view is also lovely, especially in warmer weather from the patio or windows overlooking the fountain. The service has always been courteous and efficient as well.

Try the sweet-tea pork chop, it's heavenly! Romantic, quiet ambiance in this place, and the service is top notch. One odd thing was being given bread plates, but no bread! That kept me from giving 5 stars, since that's one of my favorite parts of trying new places...seeing what kind of bread they offer! Definitely try Saluda's, but be prepared to walk a little since 5 Points parking is always hit or miss.

After reading several reviews, good and bad, we bought a Groupon for an excellent price at Saluda's. After dining there last night for a date night, we decided to purchase as many of the Groupons as allowed, and to return many times after that! An amazing meal, fantastic service, wonderful romantic ambiance....what's not to love? Many people complained that you have to request complimentary bread before the meal. While this is true, if you're main desire in a restaurant is free bread, I suggest Olive Garden or Fazoli's. If you're more after a fine-dining experience, with fresh ingredients perfectly prepared, then indulge a little, pay a few more dollars, and give Saluda's a try. Our waitress was polite, professional and knowledgeable, which we really appreciate since we always ask for recommendations on what to order. She suggested the Grouper with veggies, and my fiance had the famous pork chop. They were both stunning in presentation, and even more stunning in taste! The calamari was impeccable, and the sour cherry cheesecake was beautiful and heavenly. I cannot imagine what people could complain about; I guess if you're cheap enough to complain about not getting free bread, you can whine about that. We didn't need free bread, because we were too focused on our surroundings and appetizer! People also mentioned slow service. I think that's simply a matter of preference; we would rather not be rushed from course to course, and have time to actually chat and enjoy each others company. Our food was perfectly timed, and our waitress was so stealthy about filling our water glasses and bringing us clean utensils between courses, we didn't even know she had done it! I much rather that kind of polite service than one who interrupts our conversations every few minutes to ask if we are okay. We have a date night every few weeks, and look for restaurants who use fresh, local ingredients in a nice environment where we can enjoy each other and our food. We frequent the Motor Supply Co. Bistro, but this place gives them a run for the money! One of our new favorites, we will be returning....and returning....and returning again!

Thanks to other Yelpers, I decided to try this restaurant for dinner when I arrived late to Columbia. I was tired and not too hungry so I started off with a "special salad" -- beet salad. Very delicious, but lacking in a substantial amount of the main ingredient -- beats! The baby arugula salad with a mustard spiced salad dressing was delicious. The two pan seared scallops (why ?) included in the salad didn't really belong, but were cooked perfectly, so I couldn't resist. Next, I really wanted meat, but the 7 oz filet or the 14 oz ribeye was just too much. So settled for the crab cake appetizer. Happy I did. These crab cakes has little filler, wonderful crabmeat, and a perfect light crust. Great service, liked the atmosphere, good solid food with a bit of creativity. Hope others will come and enjoy as well.

I was extremely happy to find this nugget in the Five Points area of Columbia. Saluda's is quaint and well-designed in a great setting. I felt very comfortable there. And even though I was on a restricted diet, the staff was flexible and accommodating, and the food was delicious! I had spinach with garlic, crab cakes and shrimp and scallops. Loved the seating choices, and the soothing whir of the ceiling fans. A true southern dining experience.

I was in Columbia for work, and wanted to find a nice place to eat for my birthday. Saluda was the perfect spot. Nice view on the patio, and the dining was simply stellar. If you're wondering how good... Compare it with the Blue Marlin. I had heard about Blue Marlin, and honestly, the BM was just mediocre in my book. Don't get me wrong, it beats Chili's or Ruby Tuesday any day, but it's average as far as upscale dining goes. If you're REALLY a foodie, Saluda is worth a visit. If you happen to be in Columbia, you absolutely have to eat here. I don't typically write reviews, and I don't think that most of the reviews found on Yelp are worth reading, but this spot is inspiring.

i do not understand how this place has gotten such terrible reviews. maybe they have a new cook? new managers? new waitstaff?? however it happened, this place was fantastic! our waiter was attentive, knowledgeable about the menu and very prompt with all that we needed. the atmosphere was relaxing, classy but not snobby. and the food was phenomenal! my friends and i opened up with the meat and 3 cheese appetizer plate. the meat: salami. it was good. it was salami. not much you can say about it. the cheeses: a) bleu cheese. i'm not a bleu cheese fan, but the texture was nice and the taste was strong, but my friend likes bleu cheeses, and she loved it. so i'll take her word that it was good. b) fried bread cheese. subtle firm white cheese. kinda like friend mozzarella, but not as salty. nothing to write home about. c) apricot stilton cheese. SCORE! this was a great cheese! we paired it with the granny smith apple slices on the plate and it brought out several great layers of flavor! the plate also had balsamic jelly that we paired with some strawberry slices. i am now on a quest to find balsamic jelly and purchase strawberries. it was bursting with fresh sweet and tangy flavor! my friends split a salad. i dont do salads, so i have nothing to add to that. i had the grilled rack of lamb with blueberry demi-glaze over sweet potato puree and grilled asparagus. WOW!! the lamb was perfect! not dry, not under/over cooked, and paired with the demi-glaze it was fabulous! sweet potatoes always rock. my friends had the fried softshell crab plate (which were the largest and most tender softshell crabs i've ever had) and the red snapper plate (which was buttery and over a bed of perfectly cooked risotto). for dessert we split a chocolate souffle with melted hazelnut chocolate inside, topped with vanilla bean ice cream. it was the size of an average cupcake. normally this would never have been enough of a dessert for 3 people, but since we were all totally stuffed, this finished the meal off quite nicely. really enjoyed it. our bill came out to just under $200. my friends (who are from chicago, land of Amazing Restaurants) loved this place, and i will sing of this restaurant! so there!

I took my girlfriend here as a surprise. It was a great place! (The entrance door is to the left of Starbucks) We were greeted quickly by the hostess and sat at a nice table for two. The open layout of the restaurant was unexpected but turned out to be not so bad. We like to have more of a private table but it worked out decently. I would recommend making reservations, the place seemed to fill up quickly, as well as out on the patio. It's definitely a fine dining experience. The bartender made fantastic drinks. The Shrimp & Scallops was awesome. Do you know how hard it is to perfectly cook scallops?! Well it's quite difficult and these were perfection. The bill wasn't too bad considering we had an appetizer, 2 entrees and 4 drinks on the tab. Overall VERY good place. Noted: No female waitresses. No salt/pepper on tables.

This place was tremendous. Not only was the ambiance excellent, but the food was very good and portions extremely generous. Our server, Connor (spelling might be wrong) did a great job explaining the specials and was very knowledgeable about how the chef prepared all the different menu items. Compliments to the chef. For appetizer we split the crabcakes...very good. For the meal, my girl had the Sweet Tea Pork Chop -- that was off the hook. Pulled pork on top is excellent and the mashed potatoes that come with meal were very well prepared. The BBQ sauce was ridiculous. I had the Steak Frites...ribeye was perfectly cooked and, for once, I did NOT use any steak sauce or condiments on this. The vegetables were well prepared and the frites (fries) were excellent. This place is a great place to dine in Columbia...I WILL be going back.

Great meal last night! We sat on the patio in perfect weather. Both ordered filet mignon and were more than pleased with the meat, potatoes, and broccolini. We also split the calamari appetizer, which was nicely done as well. Probably one of the better steaks I've had in the past several years, although the plate was overall a tad salty. Loved the crust on the steak. Service was good with a nice young waiter, although he did forget to bring me my wine for several minutes. Saluda's doesn't fit my normal budget, but I would definitely return for a special occasion!

We have been there twice. Each time we had a pleasant experience. All the food served were well cooked and nicely garnished. My son liked Beef Carpaccio very much so we ordered two plates the second time we went. The waiters were attentive. If you could, you might want to go there after dusk and seat in the porch. I am completely confused as to how so many people are giving Saluda's bad ratings. Is the place under new management? Is there a new head chef? I personally think this place has always been topnotch. The last time I went was quite a while ago...but when I came across these reviews, I thought I should give my review. The atmosphere has a bit of an old-school gangsterness to it. Saluda's used to be an officers club and it was renovated. The food is mix of southern and modern cuisine. The tastes may not be familiar to some palates as the food can tend to be a bit upscale. Saluda's is one of my wife and I's favorite restaurants in Columbia. The food there is excellent, especially the filet: it is always cooked as ordered and tender enough to cut with a fork! There are only two negatives with Saluda's. First, the price. There is a difference between something being overpriced and something being expensive. I don't know if Saluda's is just expensive or if it's overpriced...but it is pricey. The second negative is the wait. If you go Friday or Saturday and you don't have reservations, you better show up before 6:45 or 7. Even with reservations after 7, you'll wait. The last time we went, we had reservations for four people at 7:30. We weren't seated until 8:20. All in all, great food and best steak in the city!

Ate for the first time tonight and was very pleased. In town for parents weekend before the USC-KY game. Food and service were tremendous. Our table had the calamari and lobster bisque as appetizers. Both were great. The sauce for the calamari was amazing. I want to try the BBQ fried green tomatoes next time. Entrees were scallops, crap cakes and I had the grouper special which had a butter nut cream sauce with grits. All were excellent. Look forward to returning. Came here for New Year's Eve with a large party, and wasn't disappointed. While the food did take some time, I chalked it up to our large group mostly, the experience was very good overall. Shrimp and grits were awesome and came with a ton of spicy sausage which is always a plus in my book. I'll definitely go back next time I'm in Columbia.

It was prom night, and there was a large group in a private room that apparently took the attention of the cook and the wait staff. Our server was nice, but disappeared and never came back. I had shrimp and grits. I liked it. It was creamy, and had shrimp, so it was okay. My mom had the fried green tomatoes and was unimpressed. Chef Blake Faries is one of Columbia's best, and the front-of-house staff has always been great, whether we have a sit-down meal or just come in for drinks and snacks at the bar. But it was the special night we had last Wednesday that prompts me to write this long-overdue review. But before the review, a word about one of the "additional tips" for which Yelp wants me to click a button. We had been to Saluda's for quite a few very happy evenings before we discovered that they actually *do* have a TV. The ambiance of the place is so quiet and lovely that you would never know. But one evening we stopped in for drinks and appetizers on a whim and decided to just sit at the bar. From there, we looked up and way to the right. Behold! ACC basketball was playing! (And if you tell the bartender you normal preferences, he'll happily get your opinion on a cocktail he's experimenting with, which is how I got to try their Revolver before it hit the menu.) But back to last Wednesday. My wife, Dr. SWMBO, has a number of food sensitivities that trigger her spastic colitis. We have gotten used to reciting the litany of her forbidden foods to our server so they can steer us away from hidden ingredients (like the now-ubiquitous roasted red peppers). On a couple of slower nights at Saluda's, our server has come back from the kitchen and asked if it would be OK with us if Chef prepared something special for her. The results were fantastic, but she has felt just a bit guilty about putting anyone to any special trouble. (I have a hard time convincing her that chefs like to experiment and vary what they're doing, and the current culture of people demanding special treatment and then bitching about every little thing on social media has only increased her own anxiety about being a good guest.) So, as our 31st anniversary approached I knew I had to thread the needle of finding her a very good meal but not making her feel guilty about "putting anyone out." And then I remembered the times that Chef Blake had created something special for her with what he had on hand. So, on Tuesday morning, I sent an e-mail with the long litany of forbidden foods and a request for reservations Wednesday evening. I figured that plenty of warning and a chance to either ask us to take her sensitive tummy elsewhere or to plan ahead for it would alleviate The Doctor's guilt. The results were amazing. Chef Blake created a tasting menu for SWMBO that ran from appetizer to dessert. * Appetizer: Goat cheese stuffed figs with candied pecans, dried cherries, a dusting of basil, and a smoked EVOO-white balsamic reduction * Salad: blanched long julienned carrots with bleu and feta cheeses, white raisins, pickled onions, pine nuts and EVOO (not a single leafy green on the plate) * Entree: roasted peeled tomatoes in a made-to-order sauce over rice noodles, with Shitake mushrooms and roasted red onions, topped with eggplant fries. * Dessert: lemon sorbet over sliced strawberries. It was just what the Doctor would have ordered had she known she could. I *just* ordered from the menu: beef empanadas followed by the sweet-tea-brined pork chop (on a bed of garlic mashed potatoes and garnished with pulled pork, BBQ glaze, and bleu cheese cole slaw) followed by the chocolate/peanut bombe. Our server was Brandon, who knew when to show up and when to leave us alone, and was just the right mixture of friendly, personable, and invisible. It was a lovely, leisurely dinner, and we can't thank Saluda's enough for it.

My husband and I had dinner here for restaurant week last night. I hesitate to even give one star. The appetizers were decent but the meal went down hill from there. Our server kept referring to us as "we" which was irritating to say the least. And are "we" ready to order came after having the menus for about a minute. The service in general was rushed, it was obvious she just wanted to turn the table as quickly as possible. I had the sweet tea pork chop with what was supposed to be garlic mashed potatoes but ended up being some bizarre "Israeli cous-cous" that had the taste and consistency of tapioca pearls from bubble tea. I didn't eat more than the initial bite. There was also a smear of bbq sauce under the cous cous that tasted distinctly like bottled. The broccoli on top was under cooked on the stem and overcooked on the top and had no flavor. The pork chop was over done and also tasteless, not a hint of the sweet tea flavor to be found. I ate half and gave the other half to my husband. He ordered the shrimp and grits which was a disaster as well. The shrimp were rubbery and overcooked. The grits had the consistency of elmer's paste glue and tasted just as bad. For dessert we ordered the tiramisu and the warm chocolate cake. The tiramisu was dry and had no flavor. The warm chocolate cake was ice cold in the middle, close to frozen and it looked like a lopsided brownie muffin. I had one bite, my husband had one bite of the tiramisu and we left the rest. Had a glass each of the Simi Cabernet which at $9 a glass was the least expensive on the menu. It sucked. I've had better wine from an 8 dollar bottle from Trader Joes. Given the prices I expected a much better experience than I received. Don't waste your money, there are several better restaurants in the Columbia area for those prices.

I made reservations for this place based on reviews and pics. I found it well worth the trip. We live about 35 minutes away from Columbia but for our 12th wedding anniversary dinner, Saluda's is by far worth the trip. Kevin was our server. Friendly, knowledgeable and let us try a couple wines before we chose. My husband had the ribeye special and I had the grouper special. Both were fabulous! Definitely recommend for a special dinner or just a nice evening out.

Our meal was delicious! The quality and preparation was well above average. It's nice to find someplace in Columbia that is not a chain or Sports Bar. My husband got the Filet and commented that it was a much better price and quality than the Ruth's Chris in Columbia. My seared shrimp and scallops were delicious and very fresh considering we weren't on the coast (where we live). The bread and honey butter is worth the splurge on carbs, but you have to ask for it. The atmosphere was white table cloth, no scenery and decent decor. The service was above average and our waiter was very helpful! The front door is a little difficult to find - make sure you don't go up the fire escape and through the outdoor dining area. Parking is tight, but they do have valet service.

I hate to give this place three stars, but there were a few things I couldn't get over. To start their food is extremely salty to my taste(and I don't mind salt!). You also have to ASK for bread. To most people that isn't so bothersome, but if you don't know to ask you don't get any. They should at least offer. Otherwise, I do like the ambiance, we sat outside both visits and really enjoyed the view. The portions are very generous and the service was great(we had the same server both visits). We got free champagne for our anniversary, which was nice, but that still doesn't wash the salty taste from my mouth. Both visits here I've used a groupon/yelp deal, I don't think I would pay full price here. It's a good restaurant, just not great.

I showed up around 8:10pm with a party of 3. I didn't have a reservation but thought I would try anyway. When the maitre DI approached us and asked if I had a reservation, I acknowledged that I didn't. She politely told me that they could not accommodate me at all for the evening. As I left, I pulled out my phone and went to the open table app. As it turned out, I was able to make a reservation 15 minutes later at Saluda's. I went downstairs and had a Starbucks. 15 minutes later, I returned and told her I was there for my reservation. They seated me immediately. Not a very smart Maitre DI, I would have tipped her had she worked me in on my initial attempt instead she got nothing. Food was good but the lack of attempting to accommodate me initially will always be in my memory of the night, doubtful I will go there again because of the snobbish attitude that they displayed.

Nice upscale dining in the heart of Five Points. The food is good, but for some reason some items were just way too salty when we went, like the Lobster Bisque and the Shrimps and Scallops. The fried calamari with banana peppers was good. Bread and honey butter was ok, but nothing special. I had the aged grilled ribeye over sweet potato puree (forgettable) and topped with fried oysters. The steak was a nice, juicy medium rare and I enjoyed it very much. The trouble is, after the soups, we waited a good 45-50 min. for our entrees. It wasn't even a busy night so I don't understand what caused such a delay. Nice ambiance and mostly good service, though a bit overpriced based on the overall experience. Willing to give it another try.

Food and service were excellent. Nice selection of wines. The only issue was a mix-up with the order- I was supposed to have a filet mignon topped with crab cake and instead received a ribeye. The steak was excellent, however, not what I thought I was getting. The waiter was apologetic, although I never got a clear answer as to whether he had misinformed me during his recitation of the specials, or if they were out of filet. Regardless, our meals were great and we will return to dine at Saluda's. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant.

This restaurant is by far the best one I have visited since coming to Columbia. For appetizers, my wife had the calamari while I had the meat and 3 cheeses platter. I don't eat seafood, but my wife LOVED the calamari. Normally when she gets calamari at other restaurants, it starts out crispy, but by the time she finishes eating it it loses its crispiness. No so with the calamari we got here. She said it was crispy and delicious from the first bite to the last. My platter was also good. For our main course, my wife had the shrimp and scallops while I had the filet mignon. My steak was like butter, it practically melted in my mouth. The potatoes that came with it were like silk, and they tasted so delicious with the truffle butter that came with the dish. It really was one of the best steak dinners I have ever had. My wife also raved about her dish. For dessert, we go the chocolate souffle. Again, one of the best desserts we have ever had. In addition, the service was great. The waiter was attentive, but not overly so. We used the $20 for $10 voucher we purchased from Yelp and the waiter was fine with it. I'm not sure that I buy what the other reviewer said about the server groaning and whatnot. All in all, it was a great experience. Just to give you some perspective, my wife normally doesn't like American food or Western food in general (she prefers Asian cuisine). However, she said that our meal was one of the best restaurant meals she has ever had, American, Asian, or otherwise. Definitely not cheap, but if you are looking for a place to go for a romantic dinner I would certainly recommend Saluda's.

The food is pretty good and the place has a nice atmosphere, but none of that is worth being subject to the rude and pretentious service my wife and I experienced here. It's restaurant week, so I went with the gnocchi and sweet tea pork chop from that menu rather than the osso buco, my usual standard setter for a new restaurant. Fortunately, another dedicated meat eater had the shank, so I had the opportunity to taste it, and it was delicious. The pork chop, though, was perfect and served with a delightful lagniappe; delicious pulled pork. The gnocchi was wonderfully satisfying with a delicious sauce, peas and bits of crunchy bacon. Service was relaxed and professional, the wine list is reasonably priced and filled with familiar favorites, and the tiramisu was very good. I also had a bite of a peanut butter and chocolate dessert that all by itself would be worth a visit. All in all, the kind of dining experience for which we hope but seldom find.

I enjoyed my evening at Saluda's immensely. From the moment we walked in the staff was very accommodating. We did have reservations, since we were a large party. Pros: The food was outstanding. The appetizers were a wonderful mix of very well paired cheese and other items. The warm spinach salad was a delicacy that I will do my best to recreate at home! The Fillet was perfectly prepared and literally melted in my mouth. The asparagus was prepared in a superior way that I will master in my own kitchen! The portions were large but turned out just right, so I could enjoy my meal, but not feel like a total glutton as I walked out the door. The chef and owner were both humble, professional and exceptionally accommodating. Extensive wine list. Good variety on the menu! Cons: The servers were a little slow and not exceptionally attentive (water glass empty several times for 10 minutes). That being said, I was part of a large group so the server had his hands full. If we asked for anything it was brought quickly. If you are the kind of person (like me) that expects superior service with no flaws, you will not find it here. You will however find real, caring and warm people here that make it easy to overlook the lack of attentiveness. Overall, I am glad I experienced Saluda's and their food. I will not go back soon because for the price I expect excellent service!

the restaurant is located upstairs from the starbucks. definitely one of the best "fine-dining" options in columbia. non-stuffy and modern decor with dark-wood tables and strategic ambient lighting. wait staff is pleasant and friendly. our dining company was a mix of couples on dates and groups on business. i prefer the tables by the bay windows which give you a fab view of the 5 points fountain. parking can be awful (metered street shared with many surrounding bars) so valet is an option. the food is new southern. the seafood risotto is very rich and has LARGE chunks of lobster. they don't skimp on the lobster in the lobster mac&cheese either. they sometimes offer fresh oysters outside of the gulf area which i always appreciate. the ostrich & foie gras is worth a try as well. i can vouch they make a great grey-goose vodka gimlet. always a solid delivery. can't wait for an excuse to go back. edit: i do not recommend their private dining room. i thought the menu was extremely limited in the private room. we went for an educational meeting. for some reason the servers were very noisy and loud (stomping footsteps, clattering of utensils and plates). it was distracting to those of us trying to listen to a speaker.

We sat outside and enjoyed a nice view of the town square. My husband enjoyed the 14 oz ribeye w lots to spare. The fried tomato appetizer was lightly breaded and very tasty. I had one of the specials and it too was awesomely good. Roxy,our server,was extremely pleasant and most accommodating w all our requests. I have lived in South Carolina for over 12 years and from the first time I came in to Saluda's and walked up those stairs it has been my Favorite restaurant in Columbia and one of my favorite in the whole state. Last time we went was our anniversary 2 weeks ago and the food, service, atmosphere, and attention to detail was what I have become enjoy through the years. We ate inside due to the heat but my wife's fillet and my sea bass wrapped in smoked salmon were both perfectly prepared and tasted excellent! Granted this was during the week and the place was not packed (but busy) which may account for such good service but all the other times I have been here have been equally as memorable. The only thing I would try to change or add would be an elevator to eliminate the need to climb the stairs!

I went during Restaurant Week, and was worried about having to wait, but once I found parking (in notoriously hard-to-park 5 Pts), we were seated immediately . They didn't bring out the Restaurant Week menu until we specifically asked for it, but they weren't snobbish about it at all! The service was prompt, friendly, and everything you could expect. The salads were standard fare, with a blue cheese wedge and a house salad that was cleverly dressed up with some sharp crumbled cheddar, nuts, apples, and the like. The main entrees of filet mignon and scallops, which sounded so good on the menu, were somewhat disappointing. The scallops with sweet potato something-or-other were very good, but a tad too salty. The steak was overcooked (well-done, instead of medium as ordered), and the bed of onion and mystery items was overcooked and in the dimly lit restaurant, I had no idea what chewy, burnt thing I was eating, so I gave up and just focused on the steak. Even though it was overcooked, it was still tasty. The desserts were rather bland. I'd heard that this was the best restaurant in town, but either I came on an off night, or they're slipping!

Saluda's website says it's Columbia's "premier location for cuisine, wine and service." This past Thursday night, my wife and I and another couple discovered this to be true. Well, at least, the cuisine and service; we brought our own wine. We also brought a Groupon, which I highly recommend. After an enjoyable trip through the streets and neighborhood surrounding Saluda's looking for a parking place, we were quickly seated. Our waiter was courteous and knowledgeable and made us feel right at home. He decanted our wine at the table, pouring it in gingerly so that not a single drop was wasted. The best word I can think of to describe the service would be "unobtrusive". My back was turned to the dining room, so I cannot honestly say how many times he checked on our table. He did keep the water glasses filled and checked to see if there were any problems with the food. (There were not.) Other than that, he did not make any additional appearances. He answered all our questions to our satisfaction without attempting to be "chummy" or trying to impress us with his culinary knowledge. Our Groupon allowed for two appetizers. My wife and I ordered the crab cakes, and our friends got the calamari, although when they arrived, we shared. Both were delicious, and the portions were generous. My wife said that these were the best crab cakes she has ever had, and I had to agree. I found them to be dense, in that there was a lot of crab meat. Our female guest marveled at how "light" they were. Could we both be right? Yes. Lots of crab meat, but not weighed down with too much of any other ingredient. The calamari portion was huge, but then I realized that there were also fried banana peppers mixed in. Both were good, though nothing special. The sweet Thai chili sauce was very tasty. We each ordered something different for our entrees, and no one was disappointed. Our guests ordered the sweet tea pork chop and the shrimp and grits. My wife ordered the shrimp and scallops, and I got the 14 ounce rib eye. My friend took one bite of the pork chop and had to put his fork down. It was that good. The four of us each entered our own little Nirvana. The conversation dwindled, and the moans of pleasure took over. I ordered my steak medium rare, and it was cooked perfectly. It was served atop a small mound of garlic mashed potatoes. The influence of garlic was minimal also, but they were very creamy. The steak was the star, especially since it was smothered in gorgonzola "fondue". As far as presentation goes, the steak was the winner at our table. Everyone commented on how big it was, and I reminded them that the menu said "fourteen ounces". The steak was not thick, but it was tender and flavorful; one of the best steaks I've had when eating out. My wife was happy that I got the steak, as she got several bites. I, of course, reciprocated by snatching a bite of scallop off of her plate. It, too, was cooked perfectly: seared on the outside, as soft as butter on the inside. The updated menu we were given paired the shrimp and scallops with "Forbidden rice" and asparagus. I have never seen black rice before. My wife said, you've GOT to try this. It was very tasty; my wife said it could almost be described as "al dente". Our server told her that it is seasoned with cumin and coriander. They definitely need to make it one of their standard side orders! We were offered desserts, but the portions were large enough so that we were quite satisfied by the time our plates were cleaned. Speaking of plates, the ones they use at Saluda's are pretty cool. At least two of the entrees were served on what looked to be a ceramic cutting board. Intriguing. The atmosphere at Saluda's is relaxed yet sophisticated. Dark hardwood floors definitely give it an upscale feel. At one end of the dining room there is a couch and companion chair, as if inviting you to sit and chat for a while longer after your meal. I confess that I was too busy concentrating on food, wine, and conversation to pay detailed attention to our surrounding, but it is neither stark nor cluttered. We were also seated by the window so that we could watch the outside world go from sunset to darkness. If I we win the lottery, Saluda's would be our choice to go to every week to enjoy an excellent meal with wonderful people. I look forward to dining there again, but it may have to wait until the next Groupon!

On a business trip in Columbia and our group stopped in for dinner at Saluda's. The decor was very nice and we were not at all rushed while we settled in and discussed the menu. Our server suggested the Oyster BLT and BBQ Fried Green Tomato appetizers and they were both fantastic. Lobster bisque soup to start and the beef tenderloin as the entree made for an excellent dinner. The service was wonderful throughout the meal - I can't understand the recent negative reviews based on the service here.

For Columbia, this is as good as it gets. Located in the heart of Five Points, this place is a gem among nice boutiques and close to "the real" USC campus. The views are spectacular as palms abound and fountains soothed, the ambiance is superb: wood floors, picture windows, ceiling fans, classic-looking bar, dimly lit, and a good noise level with great jazz. The menu is pricey but you get what you pay for. I dined with one of my good friends, an 82-year-old botanist. I started with the iceberg wedge, which could have been a little fresher in the lettuce department but it was good. I dined on the shrimp and grits and it was mouthwatering. The shrimp were fat & juicy, good spice (not too hot), a nice smooth creamy and not too heavy on the brandy. It was topped with a fried green tomato which was a nice touch. My friend had the fliet and it was like butter (yes, I sampled a few pieces). This is definitely a power lunch, Mother's/Valentine's Day, special occasion restaurant. The wait staff was excellent also.

Great Location. Crappy Parking situation. The night we went the valet had called in sick and there was no where to park. I walked in and asked about the Valet and the manager told me the situation, but they would make a place for us to park, and they did. The food was incredible and the Cosmopolitan I had from the bar is absolutely the best I have ever had. Our server had a great personality, and made the meal that much better. My husband and I shared the baked brie appetizer, and it was beyond a shadow of a doubt the best baked brie I have ever had. AMAZING. My only complaint was that my steak was over done, but the sauce that came with it more than made up for it. It still melted in my mouth. You can dine inside or outside and they also have a space for private parties.

The wife and I came for our anniversary dinner. It was a great choice. I had the fillet mignon and she had the ribeye special. The steaks were cooked perfectly. Very, very good. They have Bordeaux wine, which made me happy. Our total was right at $100, which is a good price for this quality of dinning. Great restaurant.

I like to nitpick, I make it a point to especially when writing reviews so people know what to expect (which is the whole point of Yelp, right?) while also giving credit where it's due. Try as I might, I really can't say anything negative at all about my experience here. Absolutely fantastic. I came for a dinner party of about thirty people, we had the upstairs reserved just for us, so you have a idea of the setting. Saludas gives a very up-class and chic impression. Normally this feels sterile to me but two things pulled me away from that - 1) the staff was both amiable and professional while still actually being people capable of having a real conversation 2) Great art! I don't think I've ever been engaged by a restaurants art. Upon further inspection all of what i saw was by an artist named Wayne Rogers and I give them credit for their choice for sure. The food was delicious!! Try as I might I couldn't find anything wrong. House salad with blackberries and pecans.. Swordfish in a lemon sauce beautifully cooked devoid of the oily tough nature you can sometimes find with sword fish.. On the contrary it was crisp and moist, excellent. I had the pleasure of sampling shrimp and grits in what seemed like a red pepper and cheddar based sauce and it was also first rate. If grits were prepared like that all the time I'd quickly become a fan. For dessert the only option was tiramisu which I'm not a huge fan of as a general rule, so it would be unfair for me to comment on. The entire party shared similar feelings. From start to finish I have nothing to complain about, Saludas is an establishment that knows what it's about and hits every mark. This is the pinnacle of my food experience during my time in South Carolina.

I ate at Saluda's last summer with friends, had a good meal and enjoyed the ambiance, so I thought it would be a great place to celebrate a friend's belated birthday and recent business success. After moving back to the South four years ago, I have tried many a dish of shrimp & grits from Raleigh to New Orleans. The version I was served last night at Saluda's was the worst I've ever eaten. I could not finish it. Instead of grits, the rubbery shrimp languished in a gloppy, inedible mass of what appeared to be a gelatinous pink mayonnaise. Where were the grits? Were the two small slices of deep-fried breaded somethings added as decoration intended as the grits? One guest's seared scallops also suffered a similar tasteless, unfinishable fate. Only the guest of honor finished his chicken-fried duck breast. While the fried eggplant appetizer du jour was excellent, as was the cheese and meat sampler, the raw and fried oysters that topped the appetizer menu were not being served because, as the waitress put it, "they didn't look quite right." Why were they still on the menu? The tiramisu that our guest of honor had was bland, totally lacking the traditional zing of rum. Also the frozen peanut-chocolate parfait was frozen so hard that it shattered all over the plate when we tried to dig into it. Needless to say, I was very disappointed in this now last outing to Saluda's. I write this as finish my second round of Alka-Seltzer today, hoping to quell the gastric distress that is all too frequently reminding me of last night's terrible dish of shrimp and grits. At $169 (we brought our own Caneros wine), last night's meal was indeed an expensive mistake.

My husband made reservations and we were fortunate to catch a beautiful summer day that enabled us enjoy the view from outside seating. The feel,staff and appearance of this place is a three year rating in itself. I ordered the sweet tea pork chop but substituted sweet potatoes for garlic mashed. The blue cheese cole slaw was a nice boost of flavor. I'm not a huge thick cut meat person but this particular meal was sti good. My husband had steak with garlic mash and a crab butter of some kind. He ate the entire steak and it was a pretty good size. My bite of his was tender. Our appetizer was delicious as well. The crab cake! Everything was so wonderful we missed the fact we never ordered drinks. Just water. The staff were pleasant. Didn't feel the usual awkwardness in those type restaurants. Great experience! (I THINK my pork hop may have been undercooked towards the end and that's the only reason I didn't give 5 stars)

I really want to love this place. It's a gorgeous restaurant in a cool part of town and the service is great. Sadly, the food just isn't up to snuff, and it's quite pricy. However, there is always a good crowd and it gets pretty great reviews here and on other sites, so I seem to be in the minority here. I will continue to eat there when company comes to town - it's so nice looking it's worth it.

A hidden gem, often forgotten about but never disappointing. One of the best restaurants in town without a doubt. A cute little place in the heart of Five Points but don't let that scare you off. If given the chance sit on the balcony, it had a great feel & view. Never had a bad mea; fish, shrimp, ribeye, wedge salad, charcuterie, or bisque. They also have a great wine list & make a mean dirty martini.

Classy atmosphere and nice ambiance. However, we weren't impressed by the food. We had the crabcakes appetizer, which was just okay. It was a bit heavy on the horseradish flavor for my liking. For dinner, I had the shrimp and grits, and it was so heavily cream-based that it left me feeling "ugh". Also, the grits were difficult to really taste, as they were scattered in the sea of heavy cream. My friend had the country fried duck breast which was better, but tasted slightly undercooked. The fregola sarda mac and cheese that accompanied the duck was also undercooked and was marred by the mayonnaise flavor of the bleu cheese slaw. Despite the food, the service was excellent. We sat outside and the waiters were very attentive and made sure we had plenty of water. Great place to bring family or a date.

Service, while friendly and warm, wasn't especially skillful. The restaurant has a fairly large dining room. I mention this because service was pretty slow the night we were there and I'd hate to imagine what happens on busy nights. It took so long between the arrival of the wine and the arrival of any sort of food (bread to start would have been nice). The outside seating when the weather is nice is a great spot to dine. Food wise... highs and lows. LOW: Oysters. Not served on ice and maybe it was just the delay of coming out, but they were a bit warmish by the time they got to our table. Which was fine, I'm sitting here healthy and well, but at the same time: no ice? Who does that? HIGH: Fried duck. I mean, why not? Fried is awesome. Duck is awesome. It's also served on a bed of cheesy israeli couscous. What's not to love?

Let me start out by saying Saluda's is still one of my favorite, if not my favorite upscale dining establishment in Columbia. Made reservations through open table for 8, showed up at 7:30 to reserve a spot on the outdoor patio. As we expected (especially since we were so early) we waited at the bar until an available spot opened up outside. We had a groupon for 38 for one app and two entrees plus $10 off. Not bad at all. If you're looking for a wide craft beer selection you may be disappointed. This is not somewhere to get beer. They had about 5 or so on tap, but I only asked about the ales. The had a rye pale ale and Columbia's own River Rat double IPA. Not my favorite, which is fine, I just wasn't in the mood for wine. The wine list, though I've never ordered off it, seems to be pretty good. We got the charcuterie board (meat and 3). Wished is came with more salami because it was so good. The three cheeses were superb and crostinis were charred at tips, just how I like it. I ordered the Osso bucco, he, the shrimp and grits. Lotta fat on the Osso bucco but besides that. some of the most tender, melt-in-your-mouth lamb I've ever had. The au jus was meh. Now the sides (brussel sprouts and sweet potato pruree) were each on their own yummy but the plate together did not really go together, which was a disappointment. Service was good. Not spectacular as has been in the pass and wait or had difficult time remembering the cheeses and such. Shrimp and grits was amazing as always, but no pancetta. Huge disappointment. All in all, Saludas is still my go-to fine dining in Columbia and won't hold one so/so trip against all the other spectacular times I've been there.

Saluda's is a great date night place. The aesthetics are definitely more appealing than Garibaldi's with the outdoor patio (but the food is a little better at Garibaldi's). The hardwood floors and seating arrangement make this a nicer establishment than most places. The service is outstanding and the server I had was well versed on the menu. There is an extensive wine list, if you enjoy a good glass of wine. This is definitely a restaurant worth trying if you haven't been. I recommend ordering the calamari for an appetizer. For my entree, I ordered the swordfish (a special) and it was pretty good, considering I'm typically not a huge fan of swordfish. My boyfriend the sweet tea pork chop and he stated that it wasn't quite as tender as expected, but had a good hickory barbecue flavor. All the food is presented wonderfully.

Top Shrimp and Grits: My wife and I went on a random Monday night and got our seating of choice with no wait (outside balcony). The dirty martini drink pour was very weak, however it was a very good martini! My wife got the grouper over grits and it was very good. Let me preface this by saying that I have eaten shrimp and grits every where it has been offered. I have ordered them as north as Maryland to as far south as the Caribbean, the shrimp and grits served here easily take the title! They are with out a doubt the best that I have ever had (probably due to the sauce). My boyfriend and I went here for our one year, and it was fantastic! We had the meat and cheese appetizer and wow it was delicious. Also, I'm not the biggest fan of wine, but I had the Zinon Moscato and I was hooked! For the entree I had the filet mignon and it was the best filet I've ever had! It came with delicious mashed potatoes and broccolini. I usually cannot finish a meal, but I ate every bite because I just couldn't put my fork down. My boyfriend got the the sweet tea pork which came with bbq pork on top of it and mashed potatoes and cole slaw. He very much enjoyed his meal as well! Saluda's isn't the cheapest place to eat for a broke college student, but the quality of the food is excellent and definitely worth the price!

I took my wife on a date here for the first time last night, and we were both super impressed with everything--food, ambiance, service, etc. The beef carpaccio, salad special, fish special, and rib-eye were amazing! In fact, the steak was probably the best I've ever had. The wine selection was great, I had a tasty Bordeaux. We were walk-ins, so had to sit inside as the outdoor tables were taken, so recommend calling in reservations ahead of time.

I had a wonderful dining experience here! The entire staff was very friendly. We used the Groupon deal for an appetizer and two entrees. The waiter was very knowledgeable and willing to explain any questions we had and make recommendations for us. Also, my glass of water was never less than half full. The staff was very attentive. For an appetizer we ordered the crab cakes which were devine! And for my entree I got the duck breast which was probably the best meal I have ever eaten in my life! I will definitely go back!!

Had the swordfish and country fried duck breast - AWESOME!! The daily menu is much better than the Valentines day special menu. We made our reservation for a Thursday night at 5:15pm and it was not to busy or crowded. Atmosphere was great. Service was good and having the option to sit outside was a plus. Dessert was just ok; however, we didn't try anything special - just had the chocolate cake with icecream. We definitely recommend. By the way dress code is casual and restrooms are clean.

I was in Columbia visiting family and was taken to Saludas for dinner on Saturday. We sat outside on the patio and even though the weather was very warm, the fans helped make it comfortable. We were seated immediately upon arriving for our 8 pm reservation - a great start. Beth was our waitress and she set the tone for a fantastic dinner. She was attentive, patient, personable and willing to offer advise without being pushy. The timing of the meal was also leisurely which I find to be a major plus and hard to find these days. After each course we had time to sip our drinks and chat, then as we would be thinking of our next course, it would arrive. We started with the calamari which had a little Thai twist to it - chili oil and peppers. Then we had salads the special house and the wedge. Both were excellent, especially the crisp pork belly on the Special. I had the grouper and my daughter had the lamb. The lamb was cooked perfectly. The grouper was also cooked perfectly and very fresh. All the sides were perfect, especially the grits. For desert, Beth suggested the parfait type concoction that was the Chefs special. Not sure what was in it but it was sweet and creamy and the perfect ending to our dinner. We made a point of thanking Beth for the wonderful service. When you receive excellent service it really stands out and makes for a great evening. Can't wait to return. J

Excellent food and service in a great location with a decent wine list (especially if you are a fan of California). We tried three appetizers. The PEI mussels were delicious (one of the specials). The eggplant "fries" were interesting and also really well done. The lamb osso bucco was excellent. Savory and tender as it should be. The fish special (grilled grouper) proved to be a favorite at the table. Dessert also was not to be missed with the favorite being the molten chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. The raspberry, peach tart was also good, but dominated by the raspberry as I feared it would be. I hope this is an appropriate review...we called Saluda's on short notice to attempt to get seating for our 16 person party. Not unexpectedly, they were unable to accommodate us. However - and I just find this amazing - they recommended a restaurant in town which had "comparable food and a similar price point". And we weren't disappointed. Major kudos to the person who answered the phone whose heartfelt recommendation guarantees that we'll try Saluda's the next time we come to town. And we'll call ahead this time. Thanks!

If I could give 6 stars for dinner at Saluda's, I would. My husband and I met some friends for dinner here on a weekend and were enraptured by the excellent service, great wine pairing recommended to us by the waiters, and, above all, the nearly perfect dinner. My husband had a steak and shrimp entree that was so enticing, I couldn't help but distract him so I could sneak a few pieces of my own. The red wine we had from the Rhône Valley met the strong flavors of our dinner perfectly, neither overwhelming or overwhelmed. To give you an idea of how good dinner was, we even made room for dessert which is a rare treat. Don't even read further than these reviews, just go to Saluda's and know that your about to experience a fantastic evening of delicious decisions.

Saludas was absolutely delicious! We had appetizers of green tomatoes and crab cakes, followed by a great duck dinner. We all enjoyed our dinner and the ambiance.. The reason I do not give it 5 stars is because it was difficult to find the entrance of the restaurant and the service was slow to get to our table. Other than that, it was a very nice dinner and I would recommend it to anyone looking to eat meat or shrimps and grits!

Hubby and I went for our anniversary dinner. What a great meal. We had purchased a Groupon for dinner for 2. Hubby had the rib eye steak special and I had the grouper. We enjoyed our crabcake appetizer. Also had great desserts apple cheese cake and peanut butter bomb. Couldn't have asked for anything better. Our waiter was the best, service was very personal and not rushed. Only drawback was the fact we had to ask people where the restaurant was, there was no sign and it was up a steep flight of stairs with no elevator. That would be impossible for handicap access. We would not hesitate to return.

I eat out often. This restaurant was an interesting experience. Never have I received such bad service in any restaurant in Columbia. I finally had to meet the manager, he stated that I feed 400 people a day. I can not worry too much about a table of 7. I guess since the tip was automatically included they didn't care. Our table decided that this restaurant is not one worth visiting again. The service defiantly didn't match the prices.

The food was fantastic, worth going just for that. The service could have been better - slow, not "around", not imformative about why we were being given slow service. Had we been paid appropriate attention we would have spent more there and enjoyed the time a bit more. We sat outside as it was a nice spring evening. A carpenter bee hit my date in the face. We mentioned that to the wait staff and his response was "yeah, they are real bad right now". I was looking for a "We have called an exterminator and they will be here tomorrow" or "I will definitely report this to my management to have them look into it". I was not looking for what was effectively a "sucks to be you" response.

My husband and I have been to saludas several times and have always had a fantastic experience from the service through to the food. Tonight Brandon was our server, he did an excellent job providing the best service we have had in Columbia. We ordered the calamari appetizer, wedge salad and fillet special all to share. We wanted it in 3 courses and that's exactly how it came, not rushed, perfect timing. The fillet was outstanding and they split it really nicely for us. Even though it was a 90 degree june evening, we sat outsized and it we'd very comfortable with the breeze and fans. Love everything about saludas, definitely try if you are looking for a memorable meal.

I would love to have reviewed Saluda's, but I never got anything to eat. I was visiting from Seattle and had made an online reservation. I arrived on time after paying the lot down the street $5 to park. The hostess told me that there would be a wait -- probably around 20 minutes -- which seemed a little excessive given that I had a reservation and given that there were 5 open tables (most still with dirty dishes on them). I'd heard good things, so I figured I'd wait it out and went to the bar. Apparently the other people who were waiting (despite also having reservations) were all there, too. There was only one bartender, and the poor guy just couldn't keep up with orders from the tables and also deal with the people at the bar who were waiting for tables. I finally went back and sat for a few minutes on the bench by the hostesses. After waiting for half an hour past my reservation time, I asked them to cancel my reservation and I left. The person who I think was the main hostess was full of excuses and blame (saying that management is responsible for the online bookings, so don't shoot the messenger). She was completely inept when it came to any sort of customer service. If Saluda's is going to take reservations, they really need to manage that process much, much more closely. I understand having a short wait when I have a reservation and things are busy, but this was crazy. It seemed like they were incredibly under-staffed, and no one really cared. Once you tick off your customers who go to the trouble of making a reservation by treating them poorly, they will NEVER come back. After leaving Saluda's, I had a great meal (and some really good service) at Cola's.

My son attends USC so when we visit we always like to take him somewhere new. Our reservation was for Friday of parents weekend. Not always the best time to try and have a nice dinner. We were pleasantly surprised, we were seated on time and our waiter did an excellent job. The food was amazing. We will be back!

The hubs and I enjoyed outdoor seeting on a cool evening! The dinners will cost a pretty penny, but the items served with truffle oil were delish!!! I followed the instructions of a fellow yelper and asked for bread - they won't bring it to the table unless directly asked. They made a good dirty martini, which left the hubs in a happy place. I ordered an ahi tuna special, but the tuna was a large chunk of fish instead of (what I would expect to see) a more thin, longer type of piece - try figuring out how to make that description work for you..... We'd visit again, but I won't be ordering the tuna unless they tell me it isn't a huge glob of fish.

This place is EXCELLENT. I have been there twice. The crab cakes are superb. The fried duck was the best duck I've ever had. The dishes are well thought out and coordinated with delicious and complementary sides. The food is always cooked perfectly and the courses executed in a timely manner without making you feel rushed. The service is always great. As someone who works in the service industry myself, I was impressed with their poise. The servers are also very down to earth, and lack that air of snootiness that sometimes happens with higher end restaurants. The servers are clearly very professional and are knowledgeable about the menu and specials. The only things I would change is I would like to see a few unique house cocktails be featured. The bartenders seem to be very seasoned and I would like to see them showcase some mixology talent. Their liquors and wines they feature have great variety, though. I wish the parking was better, but the restaurant IS in five points, so not much can be done about that. Saluda's is awesome! I can't wait to go back.

Saluda ' is by far my favorite fine dining restaurant in Columbia. I absolutely love what Chef Blake Faries creates. It's reasonably priced and excellent. Good wine list if you drink, lots of cocktail options. The fried green tomato app with bbq pulled pork, topped with Bleu cheese slaw is literally worth killing someone over. I usually go for steak which they have some fantastic cuts and accompaniments, like sauce bearnaise, black truffle butter, port demi glace, but half the time I find myself leaning towards his infamous sweet tea brine bone in pork chop, which is outstanding. I assure you that whatever you order will be well worth it. The environment and dining room is beautiful, with patio seating overlooking 5 points and the fountain. Dress is business/upscale, jacket not necessary but it would be nice. -Ryan C.

There aren't many options for "better" restaurants in the Columbia area so I was hopeful for Saluda's. Went a few months ago with 2 other couples and none of us were impressed. The food was average at best and the service was below average. The food was far too salty and when I pointed this out to the server - not so much as a complaint but as to inform the kitchen - he basically shrugged his shoulders. Nope - not worth it. Oak Table, Mr Friendly's - - much better options!

Saluda's is excellent. Everytime I've gone there Ive been well taken care of. Their regular bartender is great and very friendly, as is their wait staff. The chef makes delicious food and the ambience is great for a date night out, a special occasion dinner with your family, or a fun night on the town with your friends. While it might be out of some people's price ranges, they offer deals and groupons on a regular basis--just remember to tip your server for the full price! :) Anyway, one of my favorite places to get a drink or a meal; I highly recommend it.

I was very disappointed in our meal. I ordered my steak well, no pink. It was very pink, not just in the middle. My husband's pork chop was raw in the middle. The waiter made a comment that the rules on cooking pork had changed and it didn't have to be cooked as well anymore. This was raw and cold to the touch still. My drink was empty most of the time and our bill took forever almost making us late for the concert. Our bill was over $80 for 2 people and we ate less than half our food. The best part of our experience was the valet parking. If we never eat here again it will be too soon.

Thus is one of our favorite "nice" restaurants in Columbia. I rarely crave steak, but when I do, I know where to go! We've tried most of their appetizers as well and there is always something for everyone in our party. Our out-of-town guests have enjoyed some Southern fare here, usually followed by a perfectly cooked steak. The view is also lovely, especially in warmer weather from the patio or windows overlooking the fountain. The service has always been courteous and efficient as well.

Try the sweet-tea pork chop, it's heavenly! Romantic, quiet ambiance in this place, and the service is top notch. One odd thing was being given bread plates, but no bread! That kept me from giving 5 stars, since that's one of my favorite parts of trying new places...seeing what kind of bread they offer! Definitely try Saluda's, but be prepared to walk a little since 5 Points parking is always hit or miss.

After reading several reviews, good and bad, we bought a Groupon for an excellent price at Saluda's. After dining there last night for a date night, we decided to purchase as many of the Groupons as allowed, and to return many times after that! An amazing meal, fantastic service, wonderful romantic ambiance....what's not to love? Many people complained that you have to request complimentary bread before the meal. While this is true, if you're main desire in a restaurant is free bread, I suggest Olive Garden or Fazoli's. If you're more after a fine-dining experience, with fresh ingredients perfectly prepared, then indulge a little, pay a few more dollars, and give Saluda's a try. Our waitress was polite, professional and knowledgeable, which we really appreciate since we always ask for recommendations on what to order. She suggested the Grouper with veggies, and my fiance had the famous pork chop. They were both stunning in presentation, and even more stunning in taste! The calamari was impeccable, and the sour cherry cheesecake was beautiful and heavenly. I cannot imagine what people could complain about; I guess if you're cheap enough to complain about not getting free bread, you can whine about that. We didn't need free bread, because we were too focused on our surroundings and appetizer! People also mentioned slow service. I think that's simply a matter of preference; we would rather not be rushed from course to course, and have time to actually chat and enjoy each others company. Our food was perfectly timed, and our waitress was so stealthy about filling our water glasses and bringing us clean utensils between courses, we didn't even know she had done it! I much rather that kind of polite service than one who interrupts our conversations every few minutes to ask if we are okay. We have a date night every few weeks, and look for restaurants who use fresh, local ingredients in a nice environment where we can enjoy each other and our food. We frequent the Motor Supply Co. Bistro, but this place gives them a run for the money! One of our new favorites, we will be returning....and returning....and returning again!

Thanks to other Yelpers, I decided to try this restaurant for dinner when I arrived late to Columbia. I was tired and not too hungry so I started off with a "special salad" -- beet salad. Very delicious, but lacking in a substantial amount of the main ingredient -- beats! The baby arugula salad with a mustard spiced salad dressing was delicious. The two pan seared scallops (why ?) included in the salad didn't really belong, but were cooked perfectly, so I couldn't resist. Next, I really wanted meat, but the 7 oz filet or the 14 oz ribeye was just too much. So settled for the crab cake appetizer. Happy I did. These crab cakes has little filler, wonderful crabmeat, and a perfect light crust. Great service, liked the atmosphere, good solid food with a bit of creativity. Hope others will come and enjoy as well.

I was extremely happy to find this nugget in the Five Points area of Columbia. Saluda's is quaint and well-designed in a great setting. I felt very comfortable there. And even though I was on a restricted diet, the staff was flexible and accommodating, and the food was delicious! I had spinach with garlic, crab cakes and shrimp and scallops. Loved the seating choices, and the soothing whir of the ceiling fans. A true southern dining experience.

I was in Columbia for work, and wanted to find a nice place to eat for my birthday. Saluda was the perfect spot. Nice view on the patio, and the dining was simply stellar. If you're wondering how good... Compare it with the Blue Marlin. I had heard about Blue Marlin, and honestly, the BM was just mediocre in my book. Don't get me wrong, it beats Chili's or Ruby Tuesday any day, but it's average as far as upscale dining goes. If you're REALLY a foodie, Saluda is worth a visit. If you happen to be in Columbia, you absolutely have to eat here. I don't typically write reviews, and I don't think that most of the reviews found on Yelp are worth reading, but this spot is inspiring.

i do not understand how this place has gotten such terrible reviews. maybe they have a new cook? new managers? new waitstaff?? however it happened, this place was fantastic! our waiter was attentive, knowledgeable about the menu and very prompt with all that we needed. the atmosphere was relaxing, classy but not snobby. and the food was phenomenal! my friends and i opened up with the meat and 3 cheese appetizer plate. the meat: salami. it was good. it was salami. not much you can say about it. the cheeses: a) bleu cheese. i'm not a bleu cheese fan, but the texture was nice and the taste was strong, but my friend likes bleu cheeses, and she loved it. so i'll take her word that it was good. b) fried bread cheese. subtle firm white cheese. kinda like friend mozzarella, but not as salty. nothing to write home about. c) apricot stilton cheese. SCORE! this was a great cheese! we paired it with the granny smith apple slices on the plate and it brought out several great layers of flavor! the plate also had balsamic jelly that we paired with some strawberry slices. i am now on a quest to find balsamic jelly and purchase strawberries. it was bursting with fresh sweet and tangy flavor! my friends split a salad. i dont do salads, so i have nothing to add to that. i had the grilled rack of lamb with blueberry demi-glaze over sweet potato puree and grilled asparagus. WOW!! the lamb was perfect! not dry, not under/over cooked, and paired with the demi-glaze it was fabulous! sweet potatoes always rock. my friends had the fried softshell crab plate (which were the largest and most tender softshell crabs i've ever had) and the red snapper plate (which was buttery and over a bed of perfectly cooked risotto). for dessert we split a chocolate souffle with melted hazelnut chocolate inside, topped with vanilla bean ice cream. it was the size of an average cupcake. normally this would never have been enough of a dessert for 3 people, but since we were all totally stuffed, this finished the meal off quite nicely. really enjoyed it. our bill came out to just under $200. my friends (who are from chicago, land of Amazing Restaurants) loved this place, and i will sing of this restaurant! so there!
