Nonnah's is a quaint and cozy little restaurant with a romantic ambiance. However, it's also great for a girl's night out, which is why I was there! The menu offered several gourmet options. I wanted something light so I went with a spinach and feta quesadilla. It wasn't too expensive (around $9) but quite filling! It is normally served with a side of salsa but they will also bring you sour cream on request - free of charge. I wasn't too impressed with our server. He didn't seem very knowlegable about the menu items. One of my friends wanted to know if the salmon was wild caught and he said he didn't know - no offer to find out for her. He also wasn't as attentive as could be expected for an upscale restaurant. Despite this, I thought the food and the atmosphere was lovely. The wine lacked in selection but glasses were reasonable, priced between $6 and $9. I wasn't hungry enough to order a dessert but the choices looked delectable!

No desire to come back! Two orders and waitress tells us that they are out of it 10 minutes later...

Nonnah's was a solid choice for a late night light meal but seemed to be geared more toward dessert and wine. A solid 3.5 but I'll round up since the cake was so darn good here. Food- I had the grab Quesadillas which were tasty and filled nicely with crab meat however the salsa was disappointing. It was clearly from a jar ..and not that good of a jar at that :/ . Pico takes no time at all and would make all the difference. The chocolate cake I was lucky enough to steal a few bites of was divine - perfecto! It was velvety chocolatey wonderment ...team dessert all the way! Atmosphere- The front room seemed a little dated-diner-esque but the art on the walls was really cool and there were plenty of conversation pieces. Nonnah's would be an excellent first-date spot as it's not too fancy enough to be intimidating but it's nicer than your average coffee joint. Price- I paid $20 for my entree and a glass of wine. I didn't think that was too bad personally. Service- eh, not so great... he was a little on the green side (very young) and had trouble answering basic questions which wouldn't be that big of a deal but he didn't know enough to ask when he didn't know the answer.

Stopped at Nonnah's for dessert after dinner nearby. I was pleased to see they were open late on a Friday night. I had a slice of red velvet cake. The slices are a little pricey at $8.60 each plus tax and tip but WOW was that some good cake!!!! I can't wait to try another slice!

This a overpriced restaurant with marginal service $9 for a piece of cake and $9 for a drink. Date cost over $30 for 2 drinks and a slice of cake that took over 20 minutes to get????There is serious lack of service. Will not be returning, the Vista has better options.

This place is just ok. The cakes are large and look delish, but taste like they were made days ago. And the price is steep! My husband and I each had a slice of cake and really crappy coffees, with tip that ran us over $30! The service is just horrible. Our server was really rude and very impatient. There were maybe 5 people total in the restaurant, and it took over 15 minutes to get our orders. The new location isn't any better. It's still cramped and smells old. We won't be going back.

I'm now upgrading my review from 1 star to 4 stars. They have a new frontline manager (Greg) and he and the owner (Shannon) have been working with their pastry chefs on reformulating their cakes to produce a better (and moister) product. They use wholesome ingredients (100% unsalted butter) and added some more buttercream iced cakes. The sauces are also homemade. All three cakes that I tried were actually pretty good! They also now offer a trio plate at times where you can sample three smaller cakes which adds value for the price. I'm really impressed that they considered my comments and took them to heart. This shows they truly care and has heightened my opinion of Nonnah's. Their efforts really speak volumes to me. They are also moving which may make parking a little bit easier too. So I actually give them 5 stars for the new service based on Greg and Shannon (whereas before I gave them 1 star) and I'm upgrading the cakes from 1 to 3.5 stars.

We love going to Nonnah's! Best place for dessert in the city, hands down. Every time I'm there I ask for the tiramisu, but being that it is a "special," I rarely get to have it. Tonight they had it and it simply reminded me they have the best tiramisu I've ever had. It is so good! If you're in the Vista, make sure to stop by and support a local business! You won't regret it!

Let me preface that Nonnah's is known for their desserts (more than anything else) since they do serve entrees in addition to cakes. I'll admit, a slice of cake is on the steep side (starting anywhere form $7.50-ish and above), but the cake slices are HUGE! The other two people I was with last night had to take some of their cake home with them. They do serve entrees as well. Since I had already eaten dinner prior to my visit last night, really was not paying too much attention to what Nonnah's served, but again, pricer than I would normally would pay for (but not sure what quality / quantity of product would be). I am glad they kept the gallery when they moved across the street from their old location. Though their new location is slightly bigger than their old location, I did like the small and intimate feeling at the old location, which seemed to me was missing now. Not sure if they still do this, but they mentioned at one point you can reserve space at Nonnah's for bridal and baby showers as well.

Although the food was pretty good, the service was terrible. We were ignored multiple times and the whole dinner ended up being 3 hours long. Not worth the wait.

  • Linda K.

Still the same. The only thing that changed is the location. The cakes are the same dry slices. Tall but about and inch thin (they got some serious skills) . It still has the freezer or fridge burn taste. I will probably not give it another try even if they move locations again. So far silverspoon is the best place for any cakes for me.

This place is SO good. I came here for my birthday last year and has it delivered this year. Their chocolate cake is super rich, but amazing; gluten free dessert options are also available - and these taste wonderful.

I had high hopes for Nonnah's and I've even given them several tries. But it just never impresses me. The cakes are dry, the buttercream is American style, the new pastry additions just look sad and the cheesecakes aren't all that creative. Disclosure though, I'm a trained pastry chef (no longer practicing as a career, just a hobby) so I'm the first to admit I'm a dessert snob. (I don't eat grocery store cake, boxed cookies, banana pudding or even pudding in general, etc.) I just feel that a restaurant serving primarily dessert should have AWESOME desserts, not just a few dry cakes and the same old menu that rarely changes or improves. All of that said, I read another comment in which the writer said Nonnah's is working hard to reformulate their recipes and improve how dry their cakes are, etc. So I'm hoping to give it another shot when they open their new location.

I think Nonnah's finally figured out that the college-kids-on-a-first-date demographic isn't exactly the most discerning, and just went ahead and threw in the towel. The quality has PLUMMETED since their move across the street. Cakes that are past stale are regularly served without a second thought. And the core menu hasn't changed in 15 years. What used to be a semi-respectable wine list is now a dumping ground for Aleph (the only distributor they buy from), with several closeout items dotting the list. This used to be a fun spot, but they've stopped trying. Columbia diners thrive on mediocrity, so Nonnah's won't be closing anytime soon; but you can cave to your sweet tooth in more satisfying ways.

Nonnah's moved its location to a newer, larger location just a couple blocks away from its old location. The restaurant serves both lunch and dinner with separate menus for each meal but it is really know for its desserts. They have a variety of cakes, cheesecakes, and pies on display as soon as you enter the restaurant so it catches your attention right off the bat. I have never dined here for lunch but have had dinner multiple times which is good but this review will be focused on its specialty: desserts. Each one of its desserts is about 8 to 9 dollars that has a wide variety of styles and flavors. The restaurant has its own dessert menu that has its own full page with about 20 different choices. I am a chocolate lover so I always order a chocolate flavored dessert when I come here. I have had the chocolate temptation, chocolate raspberry fantasy, and chocolate chocolate cake which is my favorite since its pure chocolate with ganache. All of their cakes are delicious and sliced large enough for 2 people to easily share. There has only been 1 instance where I was disappointed in the quality of the dessert but every other time it has delighted my taste buds and satisfied my sweet tooth!

  • Dale C.

The desserts were great. Tried to go across the street bit too many people so we came here to their new bigger location. Had the salted caramel cake which was awesome. Just the right amount of salty and sweet. He bartender was fun to sit with and gave good recommendations. If you are looking for a place to have a great dessert, this is the place to go!

  • Furman L.

Nonnah's gets a solid 4 stars. It is a delicious dessert spot that is great, especially for a late night sweet craving after a nice dinner downtown. Very unique. Had to take off one-star due to the street only parking situation with no valet. I would highly recommend this restaurant for dessert. It is great for groups or a romantic evening out.

  • Will C.

Since they moved Nonnah's is larger and more enjoyable. The coffee there is spectacularly good and you can even order your own single serve french press! A lot of reviews complain about the price but the servings are usually quite large - one piece is usually plenty for two. This is a post dinner date night dessert place and I go fairly often. Only once was I not completely satisfied by the dessert, A side note, the waiting staff for some reason always seems to be a bit shy or awkward. Not in a bad way, just a noticeable one. It might just be me...

This is my favorite dessert place in Columbia. Whenever I have guests in town we will always go to Nonnah's just for dessert. They have great coffees which can be prepared in front of you. It's kind of cool seeing everything they put in their drinks and put on a little show for you by setting some of their drinks on fire. They have a different coconut cake that changes and I have always been very satisfied. The coconut cake special is always my go to.

    (4)
  • Courtney S.

Really disappointing. I used to go to Nonnahs for dessert and it was fantastic. Not the case now. I got the chocolate cake and my husband got the torte. The cake was wet/soggy and his torte just tasted like jelly and toast. Plus, we had terrible service. Our waitress only came by the table when we got up to track her down. I probably wouldn't go there again.

Never lacking in atmosphere, this the little cafe, recently expanded and moved. It gives guests a variety of options in food and desserts. Whenever I want to celebrate my own or a friend's accomplishment, treat myself or my visiting family member, or my sweet tooth is just aching, I always end up getting dessert here. Their apple pie is to die for and makes me reminisce back to eating on my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving. It's the type of apple you wish your momma made back home, the type of pie you would beg for the recipe too, it's just that good! Then the coffee, if you are feeling European or even just wanting coffee with my dessert, their coffee is in a self serve press and makes it one of the best cups of Joe you will find around the Columbia area. Unfortunately, I have not tasted many of their entrees as I go solely for their delectable desserts. But I would hope that they are just as great or better. I know without a doubt that their crab quesadillas are a hit with all of my friends and always brings them back with me.

Our experience would have been fine except that when we attempted to order a flambé dessert our server told us they were not offering them tonight (even though there was a table tent promoting them on our table) 2 minutes later the table beside us was being served flambé & my husband had to explain how to make an iced coffee

  • Andrea R.

Dined here on Saturday with six other friends. My husband and I split the turtle cheesecake that was so so good. The cheesecake was divine. I liked that they served wine too. We watched them make the bananas foster which was really cool and smelled great. Can't wait to go back and try more of the goodies! The ambiance is really cozy, low lighting makes it really romantic. Nice place to end the night after a great meal.

  • Adam P.

For a place with white table cloths, it is unacceptable to ask three times for water or to wait 10 minutes for any service. It is also unacceptable to have empty glasses on the table for more than 10 minutes and to wait an hour for a salad. This is the worst service I've had in a while.

    (1)
  • John C.

highly recommend, we tried Kaminskys across the street and it was crazy packed, so we tried Nonnahs in their new location. They had the best salted caramel cake that I have ever had and we quickly got a seat at the bar with the nicest bartender from New York. If you are downtown in Columbia looking for a special place for desert, give this place a try.

    (5)
  • Rick T.

Just get a slice of the chocolate temptation it's the best slice in the case, everything else doesn't even begin to compare. I tried the mint cake last night but should have stuck with my favorite piece I always get when I want a great desert that cost over 9 bucks.

    (4)
  • Bob D.

$9 for a slice of cake- WOW. It was good but not that good. The staff was extremely nice but prices were not shown and I ordered 2 pieces of cake for $19.

  • Roseanne R.

Our first visit at Nonnah's since they moved. We were seated in the very back room. Desserts were good, as always. Seems to have lost a lot in the way of ambience and vibrant buzz. Decor, paintings on the wall, remain similar but it was missing something. Thinking we will try the old location and check out the competition next time we want after dinner desserts and drinks.

  • Taylor S.

This place has amazing cake. The downfall to this place is the price. It's ridiculously expensive. It's a nice place to go but way too much money.

  • Brandon D.

After dinner at Rosso we wanted a good desert, so why not Nonnah's? Took is a little longer to find it because they moved across the street (near where Bella Vista used to be). When we arrived we where seated very quickly. For desert we ordered the Chocolate temptation cake. It was by far the best cake I've had. The cake was moist and the vanilla cream filling tasted great. Overall a great experience! I just wish that the portions were a bit bigger.

  • Mia C.

Great place for a late night dessert. We walked in one night around 10pm and our group had the entire place to ourselves. We ordered 5-6 different dessert items and shared among us. Prices are slightly high, but then the portions are large as well.

  • Lisa M.

Heard they offered lunch in their new location. Appeared only 1 person working the front end. Confusing two door entry points where they should have only 1. Extremely slow due to lack of people working. Hopefully it was just a one-off situation. They are located in a high business traffic area and need to turn the lunch crowd tables more than 1 time per hour. While the menu looked good and the prices are extremely reasonable; the food was unremarkable. My turkey with brie was tasteless as was the side of potato salad. I rarely have to pepper and salt my food but this time I had too. Will give them 1 more chance and re-rate if food and service improves.

  • Lauren F.

Nonnah's certainly knows desserts. They are delicious and well-portioned. Coffee is fantastic as well. It's definitely pricey, but given the ambience and quality, that only makes sense.

    (4)
  • Liz S.

Best desserts in town! Also special ordered chocolate cake for a birthday and it was moist and perfect. Owners are awesome and dedicated to perfection and service

Meh... Only had the desserts and they tasted ok. Nothing to rave about. Im still looking for a great dessert place in Columbia.

    (2)
  • Aaron Z.

The cake was really good, but I am not a frosting guy, and their cakes had a ton of that buttermilk stuff in between layers and on top. They had a pretty extensive dinner menu, so I might go back and try the dinner.

  • Channa P.

What a gem. I came in feeling light after eating some oysters at the spot next door and quickly filled up. I am a sucker for baked fruits, so I got the Praline, Apple Pie A La Mode. It was heavenly. Just so good, and I enjoyed every single bite. I hope I get the chance to eat at this place again. The only thing I didn't like was the Bigelow tea options. A cafe this cute, with this great of desserts (and coffee) needs better tea!

I went to Nonnah's last night for coffee and dessert. Based on the many positive reviews, I'll admit, my expectations were kind of high. Unfortunately my experience did not match that of others on yelp. I wouldn't say it was horrible, but it definitely wasn't great. First off, the dessert fell short. Fortunately a friend and I split a slice of the Chocolate Temptation cake so I didn't feel the burn in my wallet. Otherwise it would've been hard to swallow the steep $7.50 price tag. In my opinion it's not worth more than a $4 slice. It was good, but definitely not a slice where you get that foodgasm reaction! And if you're going to pay that much for a slice in small town Columbia, the return (foodgasm reaction!) would be good to have! Second, service. While our server was very nice and did get everything right with our orders, he did come to our table several times during the evening and directly interrupted our conversations. It wasn't like he walked to our table, paused so we could wrap up what we were saying, and then talk. He just walked to our table, loudly interrupted our conversation to ask us a question, and then would leave. I wouldn't care if this happened in a busy restaurant, but considering we were only one of three tables in the place, it would've been cool if he just waited a sec to let us finish our thoughts. Since this happened multiple times, it was kind of annoying. Lastly, at one point in the evening, an employee (Manager, Owner, or Waiter, don't really know), shouted across the restaurant to a guy at the entrance to tell him to leave his umbrella at the door (it was raining outside). I thought this was really unprofessional and just bad business. We weren't at a fast food restaurant, it was a place of fine dining. Shouting across the restaurant like that came off as tacky and lazy. The place isn't that big! I don't know why he couldn't just walk up to the entrance and speak to the guy softly, instead of screaming at him from across the restaurant. I'll probably give Nonnah's one or two more tries. But for a first time, it sadly did not make the best first impression.

  • Phirun C.

It was just OK. The 10$ slice of cake really isn't worth it. Most people who think that these slices are huge are clearly not aware that it really is an illusion. Make the cake really tall but cut them extremely thin so people will think it's huge! What a rip off, seriously. But I liked the atmosphere though. The place itself is nice and I really liked the room with the art pieces. But overall, nothing special that you couldn't find somewhere else.

I am disgusted. I called 2 days in a row to speak with someone about possibly hosting a baby shower. I spoke with Maggie both times. The first time, yesterday, she was rude, short and unhelpful...but I thought she was just that way because it was 5:00 and she was ready to go home for the day. Nope, I was wrong. I called back today (early) asking for information and she was just as short and rude. Apparently she doesn't want to do parties...SO TAKE DOWN THE PARTY MENUS!!! She kept directing me to her website to look at the party menus - which I had already done, so I was obviously interested. When I told her the dates I was looking at she huffed and puffed and then sort of smirked and said that is the week they were planning on moving. She said oh well sorry - and certainly didn't offer me any other dates. Obviously Nonnah's is doing better than I expected, because she apparently doesn't need any money. She was completley rude! So, I called Blue Marlin across the street - which is a wonderful place to eat, and asked if they had a room for parties. The person I spoke with was wonderful and I now have the baby shower booked for a private room, great food, and costs the same....but I would certainly pay more for great service. Will never go back to Nonnah's.

Nonnah's for dessert! The prefect place to get your sweet on with a nice espresso! It's a little pricey to say the least - BUTT, it is sooo goood! The waiter was supper nice, he explained, with joy (?), each item on the dessert menu. I ordered the Peach Amaretto Cake - Six layers of butter cake separated by peach custard covered with toasted almonds & topped with almond cream lattice. 7.50$ This was very good, nice and moist, the custard was light and fluffy- it was a nice cool delight that went well with the coffee. If you want to splurge a little try this place for a great dessert! PS - The Deep Dish Apple Praline Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream sounds delicious???

Nothing can top their desserts! Hosted a bridal shower here and the service was excellent. The salads came with small heart shaped biscuits and they only host one group at a time which is wonderful--makes it a special experience.

  • Katie N.

My friends and I walked in to Nonnah's in search of something sweet to eat to finish off the night. Clearly, my friends knew what they were doing. I decided to splurge a little - I ordered the chocolate chocolate cake and a latte. The cake was tremendously rich, but the mousse that sat between the layers of dense chocolate cake (get the picture now?) kept it from being too heavy. I'd definitely recommend sharing some of the larger desserts (I'll be following my own advice next time), and you will need to be prepared to drop $6-$8 on any given item, but the price is absolutely worth it. Treat yourself; it's the perfect place to do it.

Tooks my parents here while they were in town visiting. Desserts are to DIE for! Pricey, but huge pieces of cake. The spiked coffee was delish.

Order the cafe brulot. Coffee made table side with a chemistry trick. A little pricey, but very quaint and yummy.

We walked over to Nonnah's after a dinner at Motor Supply Co to finish off the evening with something sweet. My wife got a slice of the Godiva chocolate & sweet cream layered cake and I got a slice of the turtle cheesecake, which came out to $16.03... She thought her cake was pretty good, but my cheesecake was pretty bland. I let it warm up to room temperature but still had a hard time tasting the cheesecake itself, even when I tried it without any of the caramel & chocolate drizzle. I wish now I had went with the peanut butter pie. Or key lime. I don't mind exorbitant prices once in a while as a treat, but in return I expect appeasement. We both felt Nonnah's failed to meet this standard.

  • Jennifer R.

Had drinks and dessert here. Loved the atmosphere and the desserts were awesome. The only disappointment was the tiramisu-for the price it was so small-probably could finish in just a few bites. Compared to the other desserts we ordered (4 of them) this was by far overpriced. Overall a great place though.

  • Robert C.

This is just the place to end the evening. We all went here not expecting much but all were happy we came here. It might not be a great place for kids but if you have a sweet tooth and like art this is a great place to be. Some don't like art so then I would suggest that you stay upstairs and enjoy that area as it is more like a bar up there. Coffee was good also. Parking is a little hard sometimes and the place is a little hard to find. This is truly a diamond in the rough.

This quaint little cafe/restaurant/art studio has a lot of ambience, but I didn't find the desserts that amazing. They were good, just not what I would've imagined "Columbia's Best Desserts" to be. Also, I've struck out twice now on drinks. The first was a chocolate martini, which I thought would be a natural, what with all the other chocolate floating around that place. The waitress said it wasn't on the menu but the bartender would try it. It was kind of them to try, but they missed by a long shot. This time I tried one of the drinks they featured on their little table tent thing called the "Alexander". It was basically cognac and creme de cacao...with ICE in it. I'm not an expert on drinks, but that threw me for a loop. Especially since it was 30 degrees outside--I was hoping for something to warm me up a little!

  • Justin S.

Best Dessert in town. Fresh cakes, pies, tarts, mouses(mice?) made fresh daily. They also do Cherry's Jubilee and Banana's Foster to order. HUGE cake and pie slices are $5-10. And the fancier desserts are of course a bit more expensive. They have a full menu, drinks and coffee, but I would stick with the desserts. I would suggest hitting somewhere close by for dinner and then dropping in late for dessert and coffee. Looking for a place to wind the evening down and get something sweet with your sweetie? Then this is your place...

Best dessert ever! Plenty of options even if you don't like cheesecake like me, but if you do, you're also set! Never had entrees here, but def. worth driving here after dinner for dessert! Favorite- Triple Mousse Cake. Runner up- Lemon Cake or Strawberry Amaretto

Went last night after a nice dinner at Motor Supply Co. It was about 10:30 but there were at least 6 or 7 tables full and plenty of people working. We waited 15 minutes without so much as an acknowledgement and finally asked the hostess who our waiter was. She went to tell someone yet we waited another five minutes and no one came by. As we stood up to leave someone finally came running over. No dinner was being served at that point - how hard is it to come by and take an order for a slice of cake? My sister ordered the tiramisu which had way too much cream to cake ratio but was decent. I asked about the coconut cake and got a description of 'uhh, cake with layers of cream.' Okay, so a basic coconut cake...so I ordered it. It was dry boring white cake with layers of LEMON cream. It was okay but would have been nice to know, since my husband ordered the LEMON cake and we were going to share. The only coconut in the cake was a bit sprinkled on the outside of the bland icing and it tasted old. Incredibly disappointing, especially for the price tag! Bad service and blah desserts. Hadn't been in years and now I remember why!

Few times my sweet tooth can ever truly feel satisfied. Until of course I sank my teeth into every single cake that Nonnahs offers! Personally, my taste buds go ga-ga for the Chocolate Temptation and the Charleston Espresso. The cheesecake is something you would have normally found on Arthur Ave. If you know the reference then you know where you need to go next....... Nonnahs. Duh. See you there for a drink!
