This little place is tucked into Trenholm Plaza off Forest Drive. It's a neighborhood staple. I see a lot of families coming in and the restaurant sometimes names food items after local celebs (sports players). I usually get the chicken fingers and fries with honey mustard (it's delicious!) or the Special sandwich. It's very much like a Groucho's STP but the sauce isn't the same or as tasty. The food is fine. They also have a handful of ice creams to choose from if you are looking for a little dessert. The inside is a little run down. The booths have some wear and tear on the seats. I've also had a little bit of an issue when I've called in an order to pick up. We didn't receive something we ordered but didn't realize it until we got home and when I called back I was told that since it was never rung up then I shouldn't worry about it. Except... I ordered it so it should have been rung up. It's great if you are looking for a super casual place to grab something quickly but don't expect too much and be sure to check your order if you get an order to go!

My experience there was a complete disaster. Went and ordered two sandwiches and two drinks. Got our number and sat down. The place was about 1/4 full. After about 15 minutes I noticed people were had drinks but no food. So I went back to the counter to get our drinks. They were poured from two litters. 45 minutes in I noticed the people that came in before us just got served. So I thought we would be next. Another 10 minutes goes by and I see two tables that came in after us get food. So an hour in and nothing. I go to the counter to get my money back. They can't find ticket, so they just asked me how much I paid with tip. I told them and they gave me cash with an attitude. This place is ran by kids it seems. Will not return. Also it doesn't seem very clean in there.

Despite middling reviews, my husband and I decided to give this place a try, and while it satisfied our taste for adventure, that's about the extent of it. The credit card machine was down, something that apparently happens regularly, so I got to pay with a check, which I have never done at a restaurant before. So that was exciting. The carbonator was also out, so they were pouring drinks from two liters, also kinda old-timey. So far, I can deal with the quirks. Then the food arrived. I ordered the "tomato panini," in reality a grilled cheese with tomato, and it was ok, but pretty greasy. Because they were out of pasta salad, I had fruit. At a deli. So I'll own that mistake. It was mostly rotten. My husband's club sandwich was bland, but not awful. The good news? The shoestring fries were pretty good. And the service was good -- everyone was friendly. That friendliness makes me feel a little guilty, but even for deli food, theirs is somewhat subpar. And there seems to be a layer of grime on every surface - a little degreaser would fix that right up.

I love Hooligan's! I've been going since I was nine or maybe younger. I love the sandwiches. And they have crushed ice! I will always go there.

Hooligans used to be a staple small business in Forest Acres. They've never offered anything "mind blowing" or anything like that...but it's always been just a nice place for locals to go for good food. Ivan, the owner, has been around a long time, survived the recession (unlike many other restaurants in the area), he knows most of his regular customers, and it's pretty family friendly place to go. I've been coming here now and again ever since I moved to Columbia in 2008 and never thought to even rate Hooligans on Yelp until my last experience on Friday (5/1/15). Over the last several months both the quality of food and service have been going down hill. Years ago the food was tasty, the prices were somewhat reasonable, and the service was friendly and quick. The last few times I've gone, however, leaves me convinced that Hooligans' best days are behind it. Something is always broken, they are always out of some staple food item, the prices have increased while the quality of food has declined, and it takes them 30 minutes to make something that McDonald's could churn out in less than five. On Friday, I ordered the Forest Acres Burger (a popular item) which has pimento cheese, onions, and a few other items, with fries on the side. What I got was a burger patty that had clearly been bought at Walmart in the frozen food section and thawed out. They had no Pimento cheese either. Not only that, but they also only had three kinds of coke (diet, regular, and sprite), as their drink machine was broken, and they still managed to get my drink wrong. The fries used to be good but are now the frozen crinkle fries you, again, find in Walmart's frozen food section. They were also out of pulled-pork, a certain kind of chicken, and some other side I can't remember. Their card machine was broken (which it has been about half the times I've been there over the past year) and the food takes FOREVER to get to you. It was the middle of the lunch hour and they had three people working there: a guy taking the orders and getting the drinks (and getting most of them wrong), a woman making the food and taking it to the customers, and another guy putting toppings on, making salads, etc. The place was maybe a third full (no doubt because you couldn't go there unless you had cash) and the food STILL took over 20 minutes to get to me. I'm legitimately upset that what was such a nice local place to eat has turned into another crappy and overpriced eatery. Over the last year or so, more and more of the food has gone from being made in-house to being bought frozen and thawed out, the service has gone from speedy to slow as hell, and something is always not working and/or they are out of some food that goes in most of the meals they offer. What also tells me a lot is that Ivan, the owner, is nowhere to be seen during the lunch hour (at least I haven't seen him). Sorry Hooligans, it's been real, but I'm taking my money elsewhere.

Hooligans is a local favorite sandwich shop among Forest Acrean families. I'd say they have a cult following of loyal patrons. I'm biased because I have been coming here since before I could walk, but I love the tom turkey! I like the burgers, too. The bread, meat and shredded lettuce ratio is just right, especially with fries. Besides, you can't get a scoop of icecream at just any sandwich shop! Kids love the place. You may get pissed off if you want a perfectly smooth running place, quiet children, and a working CC machine! LOL! They are really nice folks, though. I find it easy to forgive any hiccups, and Hooligans always hits the spot. It HAS been a little more chaotic and confusing lately. Otherwise, I'd give them 4 stars.

This place was just ok. It's in a strip mall just outside of the main gat of Ft. Jackson, and it isn't really anything special. The staff was very friendly, but everything on their special board, plus half of the rest of the menu was sold out. I was looking forward to a cuban, or at least a prime rib sandwich, but was relegated to the philly cheese steak. The sandwich was TINY. That isn't sarcasm with the capital letters, it was really small. There were more french fries on my plate than sandwich. It tasted ok, but there was a lack of peppers and onions, and just not worth the $8 I had to throw at it, plus $2 for a drink. I could see myself eating here in a pinch, but there is plenty of other stuff around and I could take it or leave it.

I was greatly disappointed with my experience with this restaurant. We live in the Forest Acres area, and have visited this deli on previous occasions. I do not normally make my complaints public, but my recent experience was so bad that I felt it necessary to share....Saturday afternoon lunch- later lunch, so place is clearing out...We ordered, paid, and received our number for the meal to be delivered. 20 minutes in (for 2 sandwiches), and my husband's sandwich arrives. Another 10 minutes, and I go to counter to ask about my order. Not ready..I ask can I at least have the side of pasta salad I ordered. By this point my husband was nearly done eating. Another 5 minutes....I go back to the counter to request a refund...and to ask to speak to Ivan the owner/manager. Instead a lady tells me that he is at the grill and cannot speak to me. She proceeds to calculate my refund for my sandwich, and notes when handing some money back that she deducted the pasta salad from the refund because it was given to me ahead of time. Wow. Talk about insult to injury! So I can't talk to the manager, you forgot my order for half hour+, AND the $2 pasta salad was deducted from the refund because I had asked for it ahead since my order was not made yet. 2 other tables and my husbands was served. It us clear they forgot my order. No apology, just that you're still gonna be charged for pasta salad...I was hot. Not about the $2, but that the whole situation was mishandled, and I was made to feel like I was the one who was wrong.....the customer. I promptly brought the uneaten salad back to counter and advised this same lady that it was very dry....and it's ok....they can keep the $2. The mismanagement of the situation and poor service has cost them this customer. I will not be returning to this establishment. Apparently customer service is not key in this operation.

Honestly, my experience at Hooligan's this afternoon just made me really sad. I love finding independent restaurants, because I usually get to find new, interesting food in a fun and friendly environment. My friend suggested we take our kids to Hooligan's this Saturday for lunch before our usual afternoon at the park -- she had a couple of Groupons, we could load them up with sandwiches and sundaes, and it would be great! So we got there around 1:30, and spent a few moments picking out what everyone wanted to eat. My husband went to place the order, but had to come back -- "they're out of veggie burgers!" OK, no problem, I pick out something else, he goes back up and places the order and comes back to the table to wait. 1:45, they're calling out order numbers around 81, 82... and we look at our ticket and see 97. Uh-oh... Around 2:00 (after a 30 minute wait, no food yet in sight), we look at our order ticket and realize it seems to be one sandwich short. He goes back up to check; yup, they'd missed that (hadn't charged us for it, but also weren't making it). So he got that sandwich within five minutes. All the other stuff on our original ticket WASN'T OUT YET. 2:15 (a 45 minute wait), my sandwich and two kids' meals finally arrived. However, our friends' food was still nowhere to be seen. We divided up various sandwiches, fries, and chips to give all the children something to munch on while we waited some more. 2:30, the three meals from the other ticket finally arrive. Yup, an hour. The meal was not a complete disaster -- there was nothing wrong with my sandwich and pasta salad. But SO many other were disappointing. * The credit card machine was down. Meh. * They were out of what I was craving. Meh. * They didn't get our order right the first time. (They actually sent out two of his sandwich eventually, I'm not entirely sure why, since we were only charged for one.) Ehh... still not terrible. * My friend was charged $28 initially for a $16 order, which took a lot of confusion and re-checking of menu items to figure out, and wasn't helped by the fact that her order ticket apparently got completely lost (she was not handed it at the register, and they couldn't find the kitchen copy). * The handwritten ticket ordering system seems to be way too vulnerable to human error, especially if that's what was causing people to be served out of order and with such long delays. * We waited SIXTY MINUTES to get food, which would be bad service in a sit-down restaurant, but is shocking for a deli. To quote the hungry people one booth over, "What the hell? This is a SANDWICH SHOP." We weren't the only people wondering what was wrong with the kitchen. This is really what killed the experience for me. * And nobody even said SORRY YOUR FOOD TOOK SO LONG. They acknowledged it took a long time -- "it's finally here" was what we heard when it was delivered -- but didn't actually apologize. That doesn't make me feel like a valued customer, it makes me feel like an inconvenience to your restaurant! Maybe I caught Hooligan's on a really bad day. I just don't feel like it's worth a second attempt. A decent sandwich isn't enough to make up for that pile of problems. I LOVE finding an interesting new place to take my kids instead of chain restaurants -- only if they manage to actually feed me in a timely manner, though. So I'm sad...

Hooligan's is a Forest Acres staple. In business for 31 years, they've served several generations of Forest Acre-ites fast, affordable lunches, dinners and banana splits. Owner Ivan is the man taking orders, ringing them up, answering the phone, taking someone else's order and organizing the hundreds of orders that come through there at lunch. The menu is vast and spans everything from grilled burgers to a massive, delicious club sandwich. Their chicken fingers (and honey mustard) and skinny little shoestring fries are well known in local play-date circles. In fact, there's so much on the menu it's easy to overlook the hot dogs. Hooligan's serves regular standard ballpark-style hot dogs with your choice of toppings: slaw, onions, chili, ketchup mustard, kraut and relish. They make their own coleslaw and step out on traditional white onions instead offering bold, thick chunky red onions. Ivan says they normally serve a lot of hot dogs, but when the economy started flagging a few years ago he noticed an uptick in hot dog consumption. Other things consumed en masse at Hooligans include: sweet, sweet iced tea and pellet ice (cue the chorus of angels). How the Dog Fight went down. Julie Dog 1: Mustard, chili, slaw, cheese Dog 2: Mustard, ketchup, relish Tim Dog 1: Chili, cheese Dog 2: Mustard, ketchup, relish Dog 3: Kraut, spicy mustard, ketchup Liz: Dog 1: Chili, slaw Dog 2: Mustard, ketchup Jeff: Dog 1: Mustard, onions, chili Dog 2: Mustard, onions, chili, cheese Dog 3: Mustard, onions, slaw The Dogs Hooligan's offers a solid, basic wiener. As is always the case, we compared wiener size to other hot dogs we knew. Hooligan's wiener is more stout than Jimmy's and bigger overall than LuLu's. That means when you eat three hot dogs at Hooligan's, it's like eating five from somewhere else. Tim and Jeff are probably still rubbing their bellies. The Toppings Today's lunchtime chatter centered mostly on chili, after we ribbed Jeff about the insane amount of pepper he puts on all his food. Hooligan's does not make their own chili but it's a perfect complement to their hot dogs. Tim noted that this was the first chili that tasted like it was meant for a hot dog. Perfect taste and texture. We thought it was interesting how some homemade chili we've had was awful while others were good just not the right fit for a hot dog. Liz, who wore her art director hat to lunch, noted they gave the mustard a nice zigzag pattern rather than just squirting it on there. Julie was silent, for a change, picking cold chili bits off her wrapper. Jeff gave Hooligan's extra points for using red onions rather than standard, run-of-the-mill white ones. The Verdict The consensus around the booth was that Hooligan's offered a great dog at a great price. According to Jeff, Dog Fight Director of Math and Spreadsheet Maintenance, Hooligan's scored a 20.96 just barely being bested by Mack's. The bottom line? Hooligan's is a great place to lunch and dinner. If you want to see all reviews with pictures check out facebook.com/theadamsgro… and click the Dog Fight Tab.
