I would have to politely disagree with the poster below. Groucho's trumps Andy's all day, everyday. I work in 5 points, and right next to Andy's. Andy and his son are super nice guys, as I have given in and eaten there a few times. However, most days I walk right past his place, 2 blocks down to Groucho's. The selection is better. The amount of meat is greater, and the sweet tea is at least in the top 3 in the Columbia area. The 45 sauce is easily the best thing you could ever wish to put on a sandwich. Most people will recommend the STP, which is good. However, more bang for your buck is the turkey bacon club. Its enormous, and its difficult for me to finish it usually. Deny the honey mustard that it comes with, and opt for the 45 sauce and you're in heaven. Of course the pink and white moose are good choices. Although not a fan of frat kids myself, ill take eating at a superior deli with frat kids rather than sitting in a deli with increasingly lack of attention to quality and wood paneling decor. you say tomato, and i say potato.

Groucho's (and Andy's) is one of my favorite places in South Carolina, I now live in Chicago and miss Formula 45 sauce and STP Dippers. We always order the STP with bacon bits under the cheese, try it, it's amazing. Also, the Formula 45 sauce is amazing on almost anything.

Average deli. Has strong local following, a local following that does not know any better.

I will always have a place in my heart for Groucho's. My parents went here when they were students at the University of South Carolina and I can't tell you how many times I sat in this restaurant nursing a hangover and craving an Apollo sandwich. Seriously guys if you are in Columbia you need to head on over because they have great sandwiches and their special dipping sauce is incredible. I'm a little bitter that Groucho's continues to grow outside of Columbia. I think that they have something like 15 locations these days. It looses a little of its sentimental value when I know that there are a dime a dozen.

The location has been the same for decades and the sandwiches are original classics. I always opt for the Apollo Dipper All Turkey with the 45 sauce. This week I changed it up and went with extra swiss -- a good decision! Parking gets tight in the back of the building, but it's tight everywhere in that general vicinity. Don't let that keep you from a yummy sandwich. It's a local dive with outgoing and friendly staff. They have sandwiching down to an art form and they share this craft with Columbia patrons every day.

Came back here for the first time in over 25 years after moving away from Columbia. It's the same great place it's always been. Had the STP with 45 and it was awesome! My boy had his first one too and crushed it. Wish they would open in Atlanta.

If you're into sandwiches you definitely have to come here! This place is basically what I think of to eat at when one of my friends from out of town comes to visit me. It's the sauce that makes the sandwich! Personally, I don't like creamy sauces on sandwiches or dipping my chips into sauces, but this place changed that for me! I always get the Apollo which is turkey and ham with Swiss cheese and it's so good! Every sandwich comes with the sauce, a pickle, and chips. If you're driving through Columbia I definitely recommend stopping here. You won't regret it, and it might just make you come back for more!

I was wondering why a sandwich required an entire cup of dressing and when I tried it I understood why. I ordered a "Reuben variation" and was expecting a pretty standard reuben sandwich. Instead of Russian dressing on top, it was served with the "formula 45" dressing on the side. I admit as a Yankee I'm a little prejudice and thought it was something they did to cater to the morbidly obese. When I dipped my sandwich into the dressing to try it, everything made sense. This dressing is fantastic and worth the trip alone. I don't know if I could necessarily eat a whole cup (my SO and I only managed to consume half of it). The Reuben itself was pretty standard- the meat was a little on the skimp side compared to NY delis (enter the Mitch Hedberg joke about a few more slices of bread and some other people) but at 7 dollars it's not a bad price at all. I wouldn't mind it if they made it more expensive and put the "proper" amount of meat on it because the kraut was a tad too prolific.

Definitely a favorite while I was in college and is still one of my favorite unique spots to eat. The "dipper" subs are awesome. The STP is my favorite, but no matter what sub you get the Formula 45 sauce is amazing!

  • Bryan W.

How do you run a deli without pickles and a root beer Ivan would be disappointed. And the server failed to even tell us until after we got our food. I've been eatting here for almost 30 years. The worst service I've ever received.

  • Candace D.

LOVE this place and was totally addicted when I attended USC for college! The all-turkey STP dipper was my go-to sandwich and the sauce that came on the side... OMG sooooo yummy!!!! This is a must whenever I am back in Columbia.... I'm having withdrawals!

Everything about Groucho's is awesome, and they're about to open a store in Raleigh too! Groucho's is unique to Columbia SC and is spreading their wings. Watch out, Jimmy Johns... Groucho's is going to blow you away :) They serve late-night sandwiches on Thurs-Saturday!! The owner/manager even gave me a free dessert just because :) great PR guys! This little deli serves up some amazing sandwiches with their house chips... and 2 sandwiches were only $15! The bread was extremely fresh, and the meat was freshly sliced. They call their sandwiches "Dippers" because they all have a dipping sauce that makes the sandwich extra tasty. Their STP dipping sauce is very similar to a 1000 island sauce but has a little kick and is delightful. Groucho's service is on par, their food is excellent, and their prices are unbeatable. I wish they'd share this local treat with the rest of the country because this is the place to go for sandwiches! I hope they can get a Yelp event in Raleigh soooooon!

An institution in 5 Points. Couldn't count how many times I've been here and I've never gotten anything but the STP Dipper and sweet tea. For me, that's all they need on their menu.

  • Laura M.

Classic hangover cure after a night out in five points. If you don't get the Formula 45 sauce, you're a fool. Clean, friendly and super fast!

Like many Columbia natives who are divided by the Gamecock/Tiger rivalry, my wife and I are a "house divided" when it comes to Groucho's / Andy's Deli. I'm an Andy's man myself. I've been going to Andy's since I was a wee little tike. That is where we'd go on "Daddy day at work," so naturally there is a nostalgia thing there. I ate at Andy's regularly until I went to the College of Charleston. Then came the franchising of Groucho's and I was able to get my warm sandwiches dipped in special sauce fix via Groucho's in Charleston (had never stepped into a Groucho's before). My wife who was from Charleston, had come to USC and discovered "Groucho's Original Deli" so she started flying the Groucho's flag. Fast foward and now we alternate between the two. Yesterday I decided to go out side the box and got the Hogie with Turkey. I wasn't sure why the sandwich was put together the way it was (melted cheese on the bottom, lettuce, cucumber, tomato, then turkey with oil & vinegar on top of the turkey) and was disappointed. Stick with the Apollo or STP dipper and you will leave satisfied. #andysdeli

Went for the first time, and ordered the STP Dipper which was recommended but the waitress (she was really nice, by the way). The sub was really good and the pickle it came with was a nice addition! Service was great and the wait for the food was very short.

    (5)
  • Jason P.

I would have given it a five star rating, but they were a server short and it took too long to order and receive our food. I had the Turkey and Roast Beef sandwich along with the house dipping sauce. Sandwich was excellent. You could tell it was fresh.

  • Kayleigh D.

STP Dipper = best sandwich I've ever had to this day.

  • Rachel O.

Everyone has their favorites but I think we all agree... the 45 sauce is the real gem! Started going to Groucho's in Five Points when I was in college at USC. It's an institution in Columbia and you can always find a good mix of students, business people and families grabbing lunch there. Salads and sandwiches are the backbone of the restaurant and while none of them are really anything to write home about exactly, adding the 45 sauce makes them special. I personally always go for the all turkey STP dipper. It comes with turkey, cheese and bacon pieces on a soft roll. Extra 45 sauce on the side please! I dip everything in it... sandwich, chips, even the pickle. The only downside of Groucho's (and why it doesn't get that 5th star) is that they do microwave their sandwiches to melt the cheese and occupationally they microwave it a tad too long and the bread gets a little tough. Also, this particular location has been around a while and there's definitely been some wear and tear to the seating area. I think it might be a good investment if they upgraded their tables, chairs and the flooring. Just a general face lift but not a total overhaul. I know that part of the draw is that it reminds everyone of old times. That said... it's delicious and I recommend checking it out (or one of the other many locations popping up across the state). Definitely try the 45 and I'm pretty sure you can buy a bottle of it to take home with you.

These guys are great. I eat there frequently and they are always friendly. Even when they make mistakes, they work to correct them. They even reached out to me via social media when I complained about my order and made it right. The best deli in town.

  • Annie F.

stp over Apollo! Good subs, kinda pricy but unique and fast service!!!! Great dipping sauce

    (5)
  • Michael G.

Groucho's is a local institution/sandwich shop. The sandwiches themselves aren't particularly special, simple meat and cheese generally served in a hoagie. The 45 sauce that the restaurant is known for is what makes the food above average. Great for a quick lunch, affordable, well portioned.

    (4)
  • Kay E.

Visited the Forest Drive location after hearing good things...wasn't impressed at all and will probably never ever go back. First off...it was a "seat yourself",which I personally don't like. The sandwich I got was MICROWAVED. I don't even microwave sandwiches at home! The chips were nothing spectacular like everyone says they are...not terrible, but nothing to rave about. The ranch however was really yummy. Service was...nothing special. And the price for what we got was probably the most disappointing part. There are a lot better places in Columbia to get a delicious deli sandwich that is fresh, and not microwaved.

  • Morgan M.

After hearing a lot of hype about Groucho's, I finally got to drop by for the first time. I ordered the STP Dipper (with the 45 sauce), and it was incredible. I'll definitely be going back.

  • Katie R.

It blows my mind when people say they don't like Groucho's! I've NEVER had something here that I didn't like. I always get the Groucho's BLT and it is loaded with bacon. Add American cheese if you get it. Insist on their special sauce too--I won't say the name so you ask for it when you go! It is a weird combination of ingredients, but SO tasty! The STP dippers are good and most things you get will be filling enough to take 1/2 of it home.

    (5)
  • Kristin B.

I've found that if you top anything with bacon bits and cheese (and then toast it), it's going to be good. The STP dipper at Groucho's was no exception, especially because they put that bacon and cheese on top of a delicious sub roll already stuffed with thickly sliced roast beef and turkey. Groucho's also understands what sauce portion sizes should be, as the side of "45" sauce was more than enough to dip my sandwich into, as well as each of the extra crispy potato chips that came with the sandwich. Add a pickle, and a cup of water with that delicious flaky ice, and my lunchtime total with tax and tip came in at $8. Meals like this make me extra thankful for both my blackberry and that useful yelp app which led me to this Columbia gem on my way home from Charleston.

This review will be totally biased. My family has been eating at Grouchos for generations. I'm a vegetarian but make an exception for the Grouchos STP dipper, dubbing myself a Grouchoterian. It is literally the only thing I have ever eaten off the menu and I've been eating there my whole life. The 45 sauce is spoonable. Many a drunk nights, I have feasted on nothing but the sauce. The original location is seedy, overrun by college students, and has horrible parking, but I still love it with all my heart. And they have crushed ice, Dr. Pepper, and Diet Dr. Pepper. Every person I have brought there with me falls in love with it, too, but perhaps obsession is contagious.

There are some days only a Reuben will do it for you, and Groucho's executes this creation with true finesse. If you've never had a Reuben, this place will spoil you for sure(....) Read the rest of the review here: examiner.com/article/the…

The sandwiches are really tasty and different, and the special sauce is terrific; but a couple of things keep Grouchos from getting 5 stars: 1) They serve pepsi. I know Pepsi was started in New Bern NC, but I still won't give a place that serves Pepsi 5 stars. 2) We had 5 bags of chips with our sandwiches. Two of them were stale, right out of the bag. 3) Bread was slightly tough - maybe microwaved a little too long? Glad we came here in any event, it's a yummy and cool USC hangout.

I grabbed lunch to go from Groucho's today and was really glad it was to go (will get to that in a sec!). The ladies at the register were friendly and helpful. I asked which vegetarian sandwich they recommended and was told the Veggie Italian Sub is pretty good. For $5.79 it comes with a choice of chips and is quite the bargain. Now to explain why I was glad the sandwich was to go, once I opened the container and looked inside, I was surprised to see more of an open sandwich than a sandwich with two slices of a sub, it was interesting to say the least! The dipping sauce the sandwich came with, which was I believe their Formula 45 dressing, tasted great, and the sub was delicious. But I was soo happy my lunch was to go and that I was eating alone, cause I'm not going to lie, it was one messy meal with food and sauce dripping, um, everywhere! Still it was definitely a satisfying and filling meal and one that left me content. If you haven't been, it's a good deli in downtown Columbia with a nice variety of sandwiches and salads, worth giving a try.

A local college town deli and Columbia staple for decades. Great for lunch. Must try some chips in 45 sauce. Salads are good too.

best deli in Columbia by far. Great lunch after a hard night of partying, friendly staff and a great owner! When I was in town I would go here 3-6 times a week!

  • Donna W.

Our office ordered lunch from here. We had a total of about 10 orders. Once we unpacked everything, one lunch was missing-mine! We called them and they immediately sent someone back to the office to deliver my lunch order. I ordered a pink moose sandwich which is ham and cheese. There was a generous amount of ham on the sandwich. I ordered the sauce on the side, as I am not a big sauce fan. The sandwich was tasty. A bag of potato chips and a pickle spear was included. Good lunch even with the mix up.

Nice Sandwich Shop! This is a Columbia institution! A great place to go for a good deli sandwich or salad- They offer a wide variety, the food is always fresh, and the quality is great! The ambiance is not the greatest- it"s a busy place and I think the place may be a little run down?? (imo) but it has always been clean and the food is decent! One of my all time favorites here is the "My Wife's Salad Bowl" This is a man size salad to say the least! it comes with a load of ham, turkey, bacon, cheese, cucumbers, tomatoes, and a little bit of green stuff called lettuce! Put on this some of Groucho's famous FORMULA 45 dressing and you are good to go!

    (4)
  • Brian C.

The Apollo is a mainstay any time I visit a local Groucho's. The staff is always friendly and the food is great. Don't listen to the people with a lack of taste buds.

    (5)
  • James H.

Great sandwiches. Most come with a special "45 Sauce," and whether your dipping your sandwich, chips, or both there should be none left. You can't go wrong with an STP.

    (5)
  • Adam B.

Solid sandwiches served hot if you like them that way. The formula 45 sauce is what really makes the place though. I swear you can dip anything in that stuff (I usually finish off my chips with whatever is left over after my sandwich). Great quick lunch stop, the only downside may be that it's getting a little run down after being in business for so long. Could use some new furniture and decor!

  • Katherine S.

I love this amazing lunchtime spot! Every time I go back to Columbia for a football game (once a year), I make an effort to eat here. My sandwich: turkey, bacon, lettuce and tomato on pumpernickel, with a side of 45! Dip your chips in the 45, you will NOT be let down as the 45 is the most amazing invention on the planet. People will tell you to go to Andy's Deli bc they have something similar- but it is not HALF as good as Groucho's. In fact, the story when I was at USC was that someone from Groucho's stole the recipe and opened Andy's. Horrible. Get your own ideas, Andy! Also- a friend of mine lives in Columbia and was bragging about eating there for lunch one day...so I went digging on the website. I got an email today... THEY MAIL OUT THE 45! I am getting my order next week!!!!!!!!!! If you went to U. SC or want to try the most amazing dip ever- order this. Shipping is kinda pricey, but it is SOOOOOOOOO worth it! This is the gentleman who emailed me, Bruce: bouncingolive@msn.com I cannot wait for the mail to come!!!!

My sister took me here when I came to visit her for USC Family Weekend. It was a perfect lunch spot. It was cool because it is a local college restaurant, and I LOVE those kinds of places. They have GREAT sweet tea (as with every place in South Carolina) and I loved my sandwich. I had the White Moose, a turkey and cheese sandwich. But the kicker for the meal is the "secret sauce" they serve on the side. It is delicious! It tastes almost like a cross between honey mustard and thousand island. It is perfect for dipping your sandwich...and I loved it so much that I dipped my homemade Grouchos potato chips in it too (my sister told me to do this...) haha. Really good. A perfect lunch spot if you are looking for somewhere with a college'y feel.

  • Fred F.

People who grew up in Columbia rave about this place, so when some friends asked me to go I was looking forward to it. Sad to say it doesn't rate the hype. The sandwiches are OK, but most of the mom and pop delis in NYC can do better. They have this dipping sauce that people rave about as well, but as another poster said the main purpose seems to be to give some flavor to the otherwise uneventful sandwiches. Is it a decent place to put in your lunch rotation? Sure, but the truth is that the deli subs at Publix are just as good or better.

  • Tim H.

A long time tradition for college students of the university of south carolina but even good enough to find a Clemson Fan eating there. Great local sandwhich shop. the apollo and the special 45 sauce are musts for the first time visitor. great place for a good quck sandwhich when Five points or Threholm Road

    (3)
  • David B.

Sandwiches are decent. If you're already in the area though, you might as well go to Andy's. Better service and the sandwiches are superior in just about every way. The sandwiches are larger, the "special sauce" taste better, and the ingredients are fresher. Just gonna throw this out there too...whats up with the clientele? When you walk in it feels like you just walked in a Southern Catelian country club. Not my style, but if you're usual attire consist of pleated shorts, polo's, and boat shoes then I'm sure you'll feel quite at home.

    (3)
  • John David Johnston G.

I'd have to say Andy's is better. Much Better

    (2)
  • Pete J.

Andy used to work at Groucho's back in the day, & there was a big controversy about Andy stealing the recipe for the Groucho's special dipping sauce & spinning off his own place just on the other side of Five Points, but guess what? His place is better. Most of the time, he'll take your order himself. His sauce may be based on the Groucho's recipe, but it's slightly different, & slightly better. And if you want to talk about atmosphere, Andy's Deli has a warm, welcoming, family-friendly place, while Groucho's is run by frat boys & sorority girls, with the clientele fitting that same mold. Granted, the sandwiches are pretty good, & a local favorite. But you can't throw a rock in this place without hitting someone in a polo shirt (w/popped collar) & cut off khaki shorts. I'll take Andy's any day.

    (3)
  • Ted N.

Lets be real here. The scenery is always nice (college staff) but the food here sucks. If you have to get something the STP dipper is the way to go. All the ingredients are of the lowest quality. Everything seems a little overpriced for what you get. Service is usually pretty good though.

    (2)
  • Spencer S.

Great local sandwich spot. Definitely get something with the formula 45 sauce (STP dipper is popular). Mostly college students working there and also the main customers, but everyone loves it. My only complaint is that the sandwiches aren't as big as I would like and they only offer one size.

    (4)
  • Kacee G.

I keep going back to Groucho's but I keep asking myself why, when Andy's is right down the street and so much better! Groucho's has a bit more extensive menu but everything I've ordered has been lackluster. Squishy is the adjective I use for their sandwiches and if you watch the preparation process, which ends with a nice spin in the microwave, you know why. Okay that sounds harsh. I do enjoy their sandwiches and of course the dipping sauce (the Apollo is my fav). BUT, Andy's really is so much better. And it has Andy! Why even bother? My last Groucho's sub will be my last.

    (2)
  • Euphrosini S.

This is a great lunch spot. Quick, cheap, simple yet oh so delicious. I'm actually craving an STP dipper right now... Roast beef, Turkey and bacon crumble goodness dipped in Formula 45 always hits the spot the day after a night out. One of the few food places I miss in Columbia

    (4)
  • chris m.

groucho's is over-rated. maybe i'm not a fan because i don't like the 45 sauce, which people use to drown their tasteless sandwiches in. if you have to load down a sandwich with sauce for it to be good, it's not a good sandwich.
