Every time we go to Greggs we are blown away by the desserts. Our favorite was the cannoli cookie? I believe this was a seasonal special. Amazing. Food is always great, only downfall is it can get a bit pricey depending on what you order. Definitely worth it if you're looking for a home style meal and dessert

We didn't know what to expect and tried it on a whim. Boy were we pleasantly surprised! It has the typical diner atmosphere, but the food is so much better than that! You know it's good when there are a wide range of people who eat there. I should note that the desserts are huge and definitely shareable, although they are good enough that you won't want to! The only reason I didn't give them a 5 is that they don't have matzoh ball soup.

Stopped here with the grandkids for dinner on a Saturday night. The place was slammed, but we were seated pretty quickly. I ordered the turkey dinner (so did my granddaughter in kid size!). Dinner started with a salad nothing special, but fresh and good. Dinner came with mashed potatoes, butternut squash, slices of white turkey breast over a scoop of bread stuffing and a small side of cranberry sauce. Don't you just love Thanksgiving in August? The stuffing looked awful so I took it off our plates, so I can't even say if it tasted ok because I just couldn't get past the color (grayish,,,ewwww). Everything else was great. Turkey was juicy, not dry at all. We both ate every bite. Grandson ordered his favorite, Mac & Cheese with a side of French fries. He was quite pleased with it as well. Oh, and they placed hot rolls and butter on the table as well. Our waitress was fine, no complaints about the service. Prices are quite affordable. My one regret is I was too full for dessert. This place has the best desserts, cheesecakes, regular cakes, pies, and Eclairs!!! Yummy! Maybe next time, I'll start with dessert!!

This is a fine family restaurant. The food is a little below average in my humble opinion, but my wife and kids like it. The service is good and the food is served on a timely manner. If you are looking for a descent meal at a fair price, you will not be disappointed. ALL OF THAT SAID.... WOW! The desserts are nothing short of FANTASTIC! You simply can't go wrong. I have eaten at Greggs for a very long time. And I do not think I have a ever left this establishment unsatisfied. There food is spot on. Although I feel like the food is a little pricey for what you get, I still have no problem ordering a meal and never get upset with the price. But honestly, the dessert. The food, great... The dessert, unbelievable. I mostly go there for there chocolate layer cake. The cake has a great moist texture and a sprinkle of chocolate crisps on the nicely speed frosting. They also have the "death by chocolate" cake which is a little to much chocolate for me, but also delicious. But overall, great family restaurant and highly recommend it. ~jp

My husband is down in the area for work,and I came down to visit him for a few days. We were looking for a nice place to enjoy some dinner,and found Gregg's down the road from our hotel. We went in around 6pm,and they seemed very busy with a lot of regulars there. The staff was friendly and fast,and they offer a ton of comfort foods at really reasonable prices. We got our drinks, rolls and pickles first. My husband ordered the meatloaf and mashed potatoes, and I got a reuben. Everything was very good, but lacked in some salt (not a big deal) After dinner, they offered a special for their desserts for $2.99 for a dessert that is usually $5.99. We got the strawberry shortcake there,and got death by chocolate to go. The slices we got were HUGE and the cakes were super light and fluffy. We were both very full from dinner, but took down the giant slice of shortcake. If you want a nice place to eat with good prices and big portions, this is the place to go. We might be back next week.

I've always come here for desserts and probably always will, but tonight's dining experience was awful enough to ensure that I will NEVER come for dinner again. You always get pickles and rolls at your table. I used to rave about the pickles, but they're more like salty cucumbers now. With a strange aftertaste. Two of our four rolls smelled so weird I didn't dare eat them. The two warmer ones were fine. My husband and I ordered drinks. After more than 5 minutes, they arrived. They were tasty enough but we couldn't tell whose was whose. Then we ordered a salad. It took 22 minutes to come to the table. (My husband works at a restaurant so he times things like this sometimes.) Considering it was $12, I thought we could split it. But it was the size of a side salad with tomato slices decorating the rest of the plate. The chicken on it had clearly been frozen an hour before we ate it. Our waitress never apologized for the late food and never asked how the salad was. We asked for the check and desserts to go, and she waited until the desserts were ready to bring us the check! She was nice enough to the people a few tables down but seemed annoyed at us! The whole experience was slow and not worth the wait.

Just had dessert here, but man was it killer good. Lemon Meringue pie was out of this world good. Great portion size, taste, and price. Plus they had Del's pink lemonade in a bottle. Awesome! The group I was with had food and their portions were also very generous and moderately priced. Kudos!

Ok - let's be honest: Who doesn't mind sliced cucumber's and fresh bread roll's before a meal comes out?! That's what I thought. This place has ample seating and great food. Don't mind the dessert circling around in the display. If you plan on having a slice of cake be sure to go light on the meal or be prepared to split it with another person at the table!

I really used to love this place -- open late, inexpensive specials, and reliable home-style comfort food. So it pains me to leave such a critical review after so many years of satisfying meals. But our most recent experience here was flat out terrible. First, they forgot the dinner rolls and pickles... again. Then along came our calamari appetizer which was alarmingly mushy, a hamburger that was gritty and flavorless, and an order of chicken and biscuits which was mostly a giant bowl of instant mashed potatoes drowning in a canned vegetable gravy chock full of... more potatoes! And our well-meaning server -- an overworked trainee -- overcharged us when she confused our gift card for a frequent dining card. It feels like Gregg's has become that once favorite, eccentric aunt who can't remember your name any more. (Or maybe that's just the current clientele.) I hope time hasn't passed Gregg's by.

Terrific restaurant with friendly service. They bring out bread and pickles, which is nice. Ordered the sandwich with turkey and roast beef, and onion rings, which came stacked on a wooden holder and was fun to eat. There are a few choices of sides, mashed potatoes, baked potatoes or fries (regular or sweet potato), the mashed potato was great. Didn't have room for the dessert, but there are many choices. Waitress was so friendly and courteous. I agree with Chelsea L. that most of the customers are much older, but it shows how great this place is.

I'm going to get real with you about Gregg's. This restaurant has been open FOR-EVER. I can remember going here after father daughter dances and dance recitals as a little girl. There is really nothing to exciting about Gregg's menu. It is simple food, and they do an ok job with it most of the time. The elderly love Gregg's and I am sure that they are keeping this place in business. I drive by and the parking lot is always full of cars. I'm never one to announce "Hey, Let's go to Gregg's for dinner" but I will tell you the things they do exceptionally well. Here is my list in no real order. 1. Pickles :These are really more of a cucumber than a pickle but they are delicious and perfect and if you ask they will bring them out with your rolls. I could make a meal out of these alone. 2. Dessert. -Gregg's has 5 star dessert. From cheesecake to the Death by Chocolate and apple crisp they have mastered all things sweet. 3. Club sandwiches. Greggs does make a mean club. When I am craving a club sandwich they are still my go to. The moral of the story is Gregg's really just means tradition in RI speak. If it was gone I would miss it. Gregg's will always be there for you when you need chocolate cake, and as a true female I never take that for granted.

Great food, great service, great deserts, reasonable prices. The portions are very large so pace yourself and get a box to go. On Mothers Day we tried going to another restaurant which didn't take reservations, and it turned out to be a two hour wait. Rather than waiting we called Gregg's, and it was about a15 minute wait for the 12 of us. They pulled some tables together to accommodate all of us. Everyone was happy with their meals, and the wait staff was attentive with drinks and service.

My wife and I came in for a Multiple Sclerosis Support group meeting a few months ago where we received "diner like" almost equivalent to "truck stop" service in the far corner of the back room. During this visit the older, completely ambivalent woman spilled hot coffee on the table and was barely attentive. We chalked this visit up to the fact that we were a larger group of about 12 people taking up 4 tables and not ordering a lot so it was possible that the server had some animosity towards the fact that we may have been costing her money on the night. Last night (Labor Day) I took my wife and in-laws in. We sat in the back corner once again and ended up with the same server who belongs in a truck stop diner. I did not spoil our dinner by complaining, but the service and attitude of the woman was horrendous! Questions like "what's your drink order?" and when my 80 year old Father in law tried to make joking conversation she said "yeah ok, think about what you want and I'll be back." We were going to order an appetizer but it took her so long to come to the table I I didn't want to prolong the event. Very disappointed! Not sure why you keep servers around like this? I'm sure others have complained. Has she never been spoken to by management or is this the old school culture of Gregg's who has a large enough older generation crowd to sustain their business to not care about quality service and common courtesy? To me it's an insult. I spent my $$ on a poor experience. Not sure what her name was but she was in her late 50's, about 5'8" tall with short light colored hair. Needless to say she did not receive a tip from me and I'm pretty sure I have seen several faces just as miserable as hers going through the motions in your dining room.

If your grey hairs outnumber your colored hairs, then Gregg's is the place for you! The crowd here always skews older, and truthfully, the food is nothing special. It's okay, you won't go hungry, but you are never going to leave Gregg's talking about how great the food is. The dessert on the other hand, is pretty good. It is the one redeeming quality of this restaurant. But, if you want to shovel down forkfuls of tasteless gruel to get to the dessert, be my guest.

I cannot tell you the last time I was in a gregg's before the other night. I went here on a whim and saw a lot of cars in the parking lot. Why there were so many cars in the parking lot is beyond me. We waited in line a few minutes to be brought to a booth with food particles on the bench. I ordered the chicken parm dinner. The rolls and "pickles" (aka cucumbers) arrived first. Next came a small bowl of chicken soup. The main course arrived and if I were wearing dentures it would have been a tough task to chew this meal. This chicken was hard as a rock. I could only think of other places I had this meal elsewhere and how they it was made better. The price was not cheap. I am giving this place two stars for the good service of the wait staff. I would only return for an entire dessert to go as individual portions will run you $5.99 a slice.

We came here with a large group on a busy Saturday night, and they couldn't have been more accomodating. They were happy to do separate checks, which was a big relief, and no doubt got us out of there most efficiently as people were finishing. They gave us our own space, which was best both for us and other diners. We ordered a pile of appetizers and they set them up on a table. The menu was very large and everyone seemed happy with their food. I know I was; a side of broc was forgotten but brought promptly when requested. Drink service was good. The wait staff worked really hard to meet our needs and keep everything moving while staying friendly and pleasant. I definitely would go there again and would recommend for families and groups.

Greggs is a classic in RI. If you can't find something you like from here then you're crazzy!! The appetizer platter is so good with their homemade sweet & sour sauce (which is by far my favorite sauce) they have a full bar with fun drinks. Best of all is their cakes/desserts. I've had their cake's for my birthday probably every year since I was little. There is nothing like it...even if you go just for dessert it is worth it!!!

Just came back from Warwick location. Have been going there for 30 yrs. Ordered a hamburger club the fried and burger were cold. Waited 10 minutes for the new order to come. Burger was fine fries cold. When I went to register I was asked how everything was. The cashier said they would get the manager to speak to me (her initials are MM). He came then returned and said she was busy doing something and he handed me 2 free desert cards. I told him to keep them along with points card. This place has gone to hell

Gregg's is like the Chuck E Cheese for old people. The servers are especially friendly and will let you decipher over the menu as long as you want. Want a 10th refill on that bottomless coffee? No problem and they do it with a smile! The service is spectacular and the price is right for what you're getting because most of the food is just bland. I usually try to not add extra salt to my food but for my baked scrod, I felt as if I couldn't add enough salt and pepper to give it some taste. The mashed potatoes was decent but once again, I felt like I was eating a cardboard box. My huge slice of carrot cake was moist but aside from that, not much flavor. Despite the bland food, they seem to be doing well for themselves and that is great to see because Gregg's is a staple icon in Rhode Island. On Monday and Tuesday night you can get a three-course meal special for around fifteen dollars. The special lets you choose from a variety of dishes: baked scallops, baked scrod, meatloaf, etc. Along with the main dish, you can get a salad or a cup of soup. If you're not feeling the traditional appetizer, you can get two sides with your entree. The sides range from potato to veggies to rice. Then to top it off, you can have a nice slice of their pie or cake. Oh wait, the special also comes with a glass of house wine, a bottle of domestic beer, or soda, coffee, or tea. This is one-heck of a good deal and if you're looking for a local family restaurant to bring the older generation, this is it.

Gregg's is a great Rhode Island staple. It is not the place if you're searching for ultra fancy ambiance and stuffy choices. They are, however, masters of comfort food at a reasonable price with friendly, prompt service. Definitely check out the blue cheese dressing while you're there (I recommend dipping your French fries) as it's made by the restaurant.

Average at best. We both had a club sandwich, one ham and cheese, the other turkey. Fries semi warm and unseasoned. Server didn't stop by until after sandwiches were delivered even though she visited every other table around us. I had finished my soda half way through my meal but had to suck on ice because she never came back to check on us. Didn't waste any time coming back after the check was dropped off though! Nothing memorable or anything that would make us rush back there.

Let's be clear here... I don't go to Gregg's for spicy or trendy food. Gregg's doesn't claim to be that kind of place and I don't expect it. Gregg's is a solid family style restaurant that serves familiar food very well...at least in my experience. Love the turkey dinner, pickles, and burgers. Desserts (cakes!) are good for a restaurant, but then I'm a baker so I'm a bit pickier on these. Very good prices, large portions (really wish restaurants would downsize some of these!) and competent service.

I saw some good and bad reviews. Most of the bad reviews are from people who like chain restaurants like Chili's so their understanding of quality has not yet matured. I've been coming to Greggs for the last 35 years. The food is very good. Its not bland, just not overly spicy, but if you want that go to On the Border or someplace else. If you want consistency, good food, quality, value and awesome desserts give it a try. The service is good, and its comfortable. Its always packed, and its not just old people that go there. This is a BIG misconception. Its mostly families and people in the 35-55 year old range that frequent the restaurant. Pros: Good comfort food like meat pies, turkey dinners, chicken cutlets, chowder and chocolate layer cake. Cons: I can't think of any.

I can see why some people aren't crazy about this place but I have to give it 5 stars, here's why: I've been going to Gregg's since I was a little kid with my family so it holds a special place in my heart. I only Got spaghetti and meatballs until I was an adult then I tried everything on the menu. When a place prepares so much different food You can't expect it to all be great but most of it is Pretty damn good. The portions are very "AMURRRRICA" meaning excessive and overly big. If you split an appetizer and get a meal you most likely won't be able to have dessert. That is truly a shame because their dessert menu is one of the greatest you'll ever see from a restaurant. The pickles you can get upon request are simply amazing, not to bitter, not too garlicky, you will ask them to bring more out. Service is always great and they are open until 12 or 1 in Warwick which is later than most places other than fast food. I'm sure they have a late night pot head crowd that orders from them all the time.

Greggs is a hit or miss depending on location. While their wraps and salads are great lunch options when dining out with the coworkers, overall, their food is honestly mediocre. Not bad, not great: it just is. Their bakery goods certainly aren't terrible, but again, a bit overrated. While I much prefer the Pawtucket location, I've passed through this location enough times to leave me.. confused. After hearing the constant raves and hurrah's for their strawberry cheesecake, the fiancee, myself and three other buddies stopped by late one recent Wednesday evening. Dreary and dark, the dining area was all but totally empty. After an oddly random five minute wait at our table, the waitress appeared, took our drink orders (four waters & one soda) and hurriedly left us sans menu, silverware or those funky little paper place mates. No connect the dots for moi. Chatting it up and relaxing, we quickly lost track of time before I realized it had been nearly fifteen minutes since the drinks were ordered and still not a sign of our waitress in sight. Finally, after Charlie flagged her down, she plopped our beverages down, menus in hand. Before pulling her disappearing act and much to her irritation, we placed our orders, all dessert & one appetizer. Again, we waited. Time trickled by, minutes ticked on. The dining floor still empty & after nearly twenty minutes had rolled past, I finally spoke to the hostess who shuffled somewhere in the back. Eventually the waitress finally appeared with our food, a cool attitude and, well, rushed off before leaving us silverware. And thus, after another unnecessarily long wait, flagging down any employee who passed on our radars and eventually receiving the check, we left our payment sans decent tip and headed out to the parking lot. We had barely made it to our cars when the waitress actually dashed out the front door and called us over waiving the check. For a moment I thought we had short changed the total by accident before I overheard her angrily asking about the tip. ("That's it??") Yeah. That's it. The cheesecake was decently priced but was a little too wet for my tastes while the strawberry topping was typical. (I prefer my cheesecake firm.) As for the service? ...No. I'll pass.

I have to admit that upon entering the restaurant, the smell of seafood on carpet floods the nostrils and if you're not prepared for it, it makes for a less of an appetite feeling. I went with the calamari appetizer and the Summer Picnic Salad. It really isn't that hard to get those two wrong but they were average. I mean, I won't go there again just to have a salad that I can have anywhere else. Nothing stood out except the desserts! Huge desserts in terms of portion. Great all American taste.

Well Gregg's gets extra stars for being the only place that serves food till 1am in Warwick. There are many good dishes here but my hands down favorite is the St. Louis style ribs. These were some of the best ribs I've had ever. The pork just falls off the bone. I eat them with a fork and knife because they are so tender even the bones fall apart. The bbq sauce was sweet but savory. Who ever thought a restaurant in Warwick would have ribs as good as I've had in Texas. Only downside is they are a Saturday special. Why, who knows. The cheeseburger was great too. Toasted bun, fresh veggies, excellent cheese, and a perfectly grilled patty that was juicy but not greasy. Other favorites pulled pork quesadilla, chicken soup, pickles and rolls. The fries are terrible so don't waste the calories.

A dying breed among restaurants, and I can't say that its a bad thing. A vast selection of choices, all of which are prepared competently but not interestingly or very well. There is a certain comfort food level at play here I guess, but overall, we're talking about food that stays away from being "too flavorful" - not the place to go if you want a lot of spice or robust flavors - their nachos are nothing but chips and cheese with some guac, sour cream and a few pieces of chopped tomato on them, god forbid if they put some peppers on there. Not really bad, but not really interesting. Personally, I'd rather go to Chili's and have something with flavor than go to Gregg's, but if you're looking for something like a Cracker Barrel/Bob Evan's type of place up here in New England, Gregg's is your place. HOWEVER, they do have really good desserts, especially their chocolate cakes, which are phenomenally fudgy and delicious. Those get 4 stars. :)

It's a Rhode Island landmark institution. I first ate at Gregg's when this one, in Warwick, was THE Gregg's, the one and only. That was before most of y'all were born. Back in the mid-late 70s when I was an undergrad at URI. They really haven't changed in the kind of food, but they have expanded the menu to keep up with contemporary popular cuisine. Desserts were always the main thing at the original Gregg's. They paraded the sweets-du-jour in a ginormous glass display case you could drool over while waiting for a table. The chocolate cream pie was to die for, with real heavy-cream whipped cream topping and the best flaky crust that must have been made from lard to get the perfect flakiness. They still rule the dessert domain, though it seems they've compromised on some of the ingredients over the years, given the need to save money and the change in dietary preferences and healthy eating (yeah, like you go to Gregg's for healthy eating...), but it's still basically good ol' American comfort food. Between Gregg's and the old Nordic Lodge, another long-lived RI institution (the pig-out buffet never goes out of fashion), it's nice to know that there are things that I can always count on being there for me whenever I make a nostalgic visit to one of my favorite parts of New England.

(this is has been sitting unfinished for months so i should finish it) over the summer i stopped in here for dinner due to the recommendation of the hostess at our hotel. she steered us wrong. most of the reviews are by people who have been going here as a child and have the fondest memories eating here. since it has been a while since i've been here, i don't recall exactly what i ordered but i do know that neither myself or my dinner companion finished our meals. my food was bland and dry. the service was lackluster as well. i felt that our waitress just didn't care about serving us. she would go to the tables around us and not make any motion to come check on us. i asked her a question about the menu and she made me feel stupid for asking it. she just didn't feel friendly. i don't see what everyone else sees in this place. plus any establishment that charges you $3.95 for a 99 cent can of Arnold Palmers is no place i want to give my business.

along with wimpy skimpies, ny system and dels, it rounds out the very definition of comfort food RI style. the dreary winter afternoons I would order take out and race home down 37 are too many to count. I dont miss much in the way of american food, but Gregg's french dip with au jus, french onion soup and OH MY STARS their desserts.... I would give nothing more right now than to have a debauched romp with some warm cookie pie in my mouth and all 7 layers of chocolate cake smeared on my naughty bits. oh yeah, its that good. this will definitely be one of my first stops in RI when I return for the holidays after many years away. I'm coming back for you Gregg's, its been too long!

Greggs is a RI institution. Their fresh roast turkey sandwich, clam chowder, fish and chips, the pickles, and the desserts. I am not sure that 2 restaurants equates a chain....Legal Seafoods is a chain that has restaurants all over the country. Greggs is just a RI place. The food is simple, but consistently good. It is good RI basics, from Italian to American. If you are looking for Mexican, hot flavors, spicy food- no, this is not for you. As for Derek A's assessment, Cracker Barrel is mostly in the south and is NO comparison. Except maybe chicken and dumplings. And to compare it to awful Bob Evans..well. Their desserts have always been oustanding, from the 7 layer chocolate cake, to the huge eclairs to the pies, etc. They can't be beat. It does have an older crowd, because the food is consistent, always good, and the prices are reasonable. Hard to find in this economy. Thay have not changed, and as someone who no longer lives in RI, I always make time to go to Greggs at least once!

Every time we go to Greggs we are blown away by the desserts. Our favorite was the cannoli cookie? I believe this was a seasonal special. Amazing. Food is always great, only downfall is it can get a bit pricey depending on what you order. Definitely worth it if you're looking for a home style meal and dessert

We didn't know what to expect and tried it on a whim. Boy were we pleasantly surprised! It has the typical diner atmosphere, but the food is so much better than that! You know it's good when there are a wide range of people who eat there. I should note that the desserts are huge and definitely shareable, although they are good enough that you won't want to! The only reason I didn't give them a 5 is that they don't have matzoh ball soup.

Stopped here with the grandkids for dinner on a Saturday night. The place was slammed, but we were seated pretty quickly. I ordered the turkey dinner (so did my granddaughter in kid size!). Dinner started with a salad nothing special, but fresh and good. Dinner came with mashed potatoes, butternut squash, slices of white turkey breast over a scoop of bread stuffing and a small side of cranberry sauce. Don't you just love Thanksgiving in August? The stuffing looked awful so I took it off our plates, so I can't even say if it tasted ok because I just couldn't get past the color (grayish,,,ewwww). Everything else was great. Turkey was juicy, not dry at all. We both ate every bite. Grandson ordered his favorite, Mac & Cheese with a side of French fries. He was quite pleased with it as well. Oh, and they placed hot rolls and butter on the table as well. Our waitress was fine, no complaints about the service. Prices are quite affordable. My one regret is I was too full for dessert. This place has the best desserts, cheesecakes, regular cakes, pies, and Eclairs!!! Yummy! Maybe next time, I'll start with dessert!!

This is a fine family restaurant. The food is a little below average in my humble opinion, but my wife and kids like it. The service is good and the food is served on a timely manner. If you are looking for a descent meal at a fair price, you will not be disappointed. ALL OF THAT SAID.... WOW! The desserts are nothing short of FANTASTIC! You simply can't go wrong. They are all good! In fact, just typing this is making me want the death by chocolate this very minute.

I have eaten at Greggs for a very long time. And I do not think I have a ever left this establishment unsatisfied. There food is spot on. Although I feel like the food is a little pricey for what you get, I still have no problem ordering a meal and never get upset with the price. But honestly, the dessert. The food, great... The dessert, unbelievable. I mostly go there for there chocolate layer cake. The cake has a great moist texture and a sprinkle of chocolate crisps on the nicely speed frosting. They also have the "death by chocolate" cake which is a little to much chocolate for me, but also delicious. But overall, great family restaurant and highly recommend it. ~jp

Atmosphere at Warwick location is a little dated, I can't speak for other locations. I'm hoping they do well with the expansion of adding a bar. Service has been hit or miss, but food is good. Kind of reminds me of Howard Johnson's in the 90's, I'll still go on occasion but won't go out of my way

My husband is down in the area for work,and I came down to visit him for a few days. We were looking for a nice place to enjoy some dinner,and found Gregg's down the road from our hotel. We went in around 6pm,and they seemed very busy with a lot of regulars there. The staff was friendly and fast,and they offer a ton of comfort foods at really reasonable prices. We got our drinks, rolls and pickles first. My husband ordered the meatloaf and mashed potatoes, and I got a reuben. Everything was very good, but lacked in some salt (not a big deal) After dinner, they offered a special for their desserts for $2.99 for a dessert that is usually $5.99. We got the strawberry shortcake there,and got death by chocolate to go. The slices we got were HUGE and the cakes were super light and fluffy. We were both very full from dinner, but took down the giant slice of shortcake. If you want a nice place to eat with good prices and big portions, this is the place to go. We might be back next week.

I've always come here for desserts and probably always will, but tonight's dining experience was awful enough to ensure that I will NEVER come for dinner again. You always get pickles and rolls at your table. I used to rave about the pickles, but they're more like salty cucumbers now. With a strange aftertaste. Two of our four rolls smelled so weird I didn't dare eat them. The two warmer ones were fine. My husband and I ordered drinks. After more than 5 minutes, they arrived. They were tasty enough but we couldn't tell whose was whose. Then we ordered a salad. It took 22 minutes to come to the table. (My husband works at a restaurant so he times things like this sometimes.) Considering it was $12, I thought we could split it. But it was the size of a side salad with tomato slices decorating the rest of the plate. The chicken on it had clearly been frozen an hour before we ate it. Our waitress never apologized for the late food and never asked how the salad was. We asked for the check and desserts to go, and she waited until the desserts were ready to bring us the check! She was nice enough to the people a few tables down but seemed annoyed at us! The whole experience was slow and not worth the wait.

Just had dessert here, but man was it killer good. Lemon Meringue pie was out of this world good. Great portion size, taste, and price. Plus they had Del's pink lemonade in a bottle. Awesome! The group I was with had food and their portions were also very generous and moderately priced. Kudos!

Ok - let's be honest: Who doesn't mind sliced cucumber's and fresh bread roll's before a meal comes out?! That's what I thought. This place has ample seating and great food. Don't mind the dessert circling around in the display. If you plan on having a slice of cake be sure to go light on the meal or be prepared to split it with another person at the table!

I really used to love this place -- open late, inexpensive specials, and reliable home-style comfort food. So it pains me to leave such a critical review after so many years of satisfying meals. But our most recent experience here was flat out terrible. First, they forgot the dinner rolls and pickles... again. Then along came our calamari appetizer which was alarmingly mushy, a hamburger that was gritty and flavorless, and an order of chicken and biscuits which was mostly a giant bowl of instant mashed potatoes drowning in a canned vegetable gravy chock full of... more potatoes! And our well-meaning server -- an overworked trainee -- overcharged us when she confused our gift card for a frequent dining card. It feels like Gregg's has become that once favorite, eccentric aunt who can't remember your name any more. (Or maybe that's just the current clientele.) I hope time hasn't passed Gregg's by.

Terrific restaurant with friendly service. They bring out bread and pickles, which is nice. Ordered the sandwich with turkey and roast beef, and onion rings, which came stacked on a wooden holder and was fun to eat. There are a few choices of sides, mashed potatoes, baked potatoes or fries (regular or sweet potato), the mashed potato was great. Didn't have room for the dessert, but there are many choices. Waitress was so friendly and courteous. I agree with Chelsea L. that most of the customers are much older, but it shows how great this place is.

I'm going to get real with you about Gregg's. This restaurant has been open FOR-EVER. I can remember going here after father daughter dances and dance recitals as a little girl. There is really nothing to exciting about Gregg's menu. It is simple food, and they do an ok job with it most of the time. The elderly love Gregg's and I am sure that they are keeping this place in business. I drive by and the parking lot is always full of cars. I'm never one to announce "Hey, Let's go to Gregg's for dinner" but I will tell you the things they do exceptionally well. Here is my list in no real order. 1. Pickles :These are really more of a cucumber than a pickle but they are delicious and perfect and if you ask they will bring them out with your rolls. I could make a meal out of these alone. 2. Dessert. -Gregg's has 5 star dessert. From cheesecake to the Death by Chocolate and apple crisp they have mastered all things sweet. 3. Club sandwiches. Greggs does make a mean club. When I am craving a club sandwich they are still my go to. The moral of the story is Gregg's really just means tradition in RI speak. If it was gone I would miss it. Gregg's will always be there for you when you need chocolate cake, and as a true female I never take that for granted.

Great food, great service, great deserts, reasonable prices. The portions are very large so pace yourself and get a box to go. On Mothers Day we tried going to another restaurant which didn't take reservations, and it turned out to be a two hour wait. Rather than waiting we called Gregg's, and it was about a15 minute wait for the 12 of us. They pulled some tables together to accommodate all of us. Everyone was happy with their meals, and the wait staff was attentive with drinks and service.

My wife and I came in for a Multiple Sclerosis Support group meeting a few months ago where we received "diner like" almost equivalent to "truck stop" service in the far corner of the back room. During this visit the older, completely ambivalent woman spilled hot coffee on the table and was barely attentive. We chalked this visit up to the fact that we were a larger group of about 12 people taking up 4 tables and not ordering a lot so it was possible that the server had some animosity towards the fact that we may have been costing her money on the night. Last night (Labor Day) I took my wife and in-laws in. We sat in the back corner once again and ended up with the same server who belongs in a truck stop diner. I did not spoil our dinner by complaining, but the service and attitude of the woman was horrendous! Questions like "what's your drink order?" and when my 80 year old Father in law tried to make joking conversation she said "yeah ok, think about what you want and I'll be back." We were going to order an appetizer but it took her so long to come to the table I I didn't want to prolong the event. Very disappointed! Not sure why you keep servers around like this? I'm sure others have complained. Has she never been spoken to by management or is this the old school culture of Gregg's who has a large enough older generation crowd to sustain their business to not care about quality service and common courtesy? To me it's an insult. I spent my $$ on a poor experience. Not sure what her name was but she was in her late 50's, about 5'8" tall with short light colored hair. Needless to say she did not receive a tip from me and I'm pretty sure I have seen several faces just as miserable as hers going through the motions in your dining room.

If your grey hairs outnumber your colored hairs, then Gregg's is the place for you! The crowd here always skews older, and truthfully, the food is nothing special. It's okay, you won't go hungry, but you are never going to leave Gregg's talking about how great the food is. The dessert on the other hand, is pretty good. It is the one redeeming quality of this restaurant. But, if you want to shovel down forkfuls of tasteless gruel to get to the dessert, be my guest.

I cannot tell you the last time I was in a gregg's before the other night. I went here on a whim and saw a lot of cars in the parking lot. Why there were so many cars in the parking lot is beyond me. We waited in line a few minutes to be brought to a booth with food particles on the bench. I ordered the chicken parm dinner. The rolls and "pickles" (aka cucumbers) arrived first. Next came a small bowl of chicken soup. The main course arrived and if I were wearing dentures it would have been a tough task to chew this meal. This chicken was hard as a rock. I could only think of other places I had this meal elsewhere and how they it was made better. The price was not cheap. I am giving this place two stars for the good service of the wait staff. I would only return for an entire dessert to go as individual portions will run you $5.99 a slice.

We came here with a large group on a busy Saturday night, and they couldn't have been more accomodating. They were happy to do separate checks, which was a big relief, and no doubt got us out of there most efficiently as people were finishing. They gave us our own space, which was best both for us and other diners. We ordered a pile of appetizers and they set them up on a table. The menu was very large and everyone seemed happy with their food. I know I was; a side of broc was forgotten but brought promptly when requested. Drink service was good. The wait staff worked really hard to meet our needs and keep everything moving while staying friendly and pleasant. I definitely would go there again and would recommend for families and groups.

Greggs is a classic in RI. If you can't find something you like from here then you're crazzy!! The appetizer platter is so good with their homemade sweet & sour sauce (which is by far my favorite sauce) they have a full bar with fun drinks. Best of all is their cakes/desserts. I've had their cake's for my birthday probably every year since I was little. There is nothing like it...even if you go just for dessert it is worth it!!!

One good thing is the French onion soup, and pickles aren't my thing but people rave about them. I wish they would step up their game and get cooking like old times.

Just came back from Warwick location. Have been going there for 30 yrs. Ordered a hamburger club the fried and burger were cold. Waited 10 minutes for the new order to come. Burger was fine fries cold. When I went to register I was asked how everything was. The cashier said they would get the manager to speak to me (her initials are MM). He came then returned and said she was busy doing something and he handed me 2 free desert cards. I told him to keep them along with points card. This place has gone to hell

Gregg's is like the Chuck E Cheese for old people. The servers are especially friendly and will let you decipher over the menu as long as you want. Want a 10th refill on that bottomless coffee? No problem and they do it with a smile! The service is spectacular and the price is right for what you're getting because most of the food is just bland. I usually try to not add extra salt to my food but for my baked scrod, I felt as if I couldn't add enough salt and pepper to give it some taste. The mashed potatoes was decent but once again, I felt like I was eating a cardboard box. My huge slice of carrot cake was moist but aside from that, not much flavor. Despite the bland food, they seem to be doing well for themselves and that is great to see because Gregg's is a staple icon in Rhode Island. On Monday and Tuesday night you can get a three-course meal special for around fifteen dollars. The special lets you choose from a variety of dishes: baked scallops, baked scrod, meatloaf, etc. Along with the main dish, you can get a salad or a cup of soup. If you're not feeling the traditional appetizer, you can get two sides with your entree. The sides range from potato to veggies to rice. Then to top it off, you can have a nice slice of their pie or cake. Oh wait, the special also comes with a glass of house wine, a bottle of domestic beer, or soda, coffee, or tea. This is one-heck of a good deal and if you're looking for a local family restaurant to bring the older generation, this is it.

Gregg's is a great Rhode Island staple. It is not the place if you're searching for ultra fancy ambiance and stuffy choices. They are, however, masters of comfort food at a reasonable price with friendly, prompt service. Definitely check out the blue cheese dressing while you're there (I recommend dipping your French fries) as it's made by the restaurant.

Average at best. We both had a club sandwich, one ham and cheese, the other turkey. Fries semi warm and unseasoned. Server didn't stop by until after sandwiches were delivered even though she visited every other table around us. I had finished my soda half way through my meal but had to suck on ice because she never came back to check on us. Didn't waste any time coming back after the check was dropped off though! Nothing memorable or anything that would make us rush back there.

Let's be clear here... I don't go to Gregg's for spicy or trendy food. Gregg's doesn't claim to be that kind of place and I don't expect it. Gregg's is a solid family style restaurant that serves familiar food very well...at least in my experience. Love the turkey dinner, pickles, and burgers. Desserts (cakes!) are good for a restaurant, but then I'm a baker so I'm a bit pickier on these. Very good prices, large portions (really wish restaurants would downsize some of these!) and competent service.

I saw some good and bad reviews. Most of the bad reviews are from people who like chain restaurants like Chili's so their understanding of quality has not yet matured. I've been coming to Greggs for the last 35 years. The food is very good. Its not bland, just not overly spicy, but if you want that go to On the Border or someplace else. If you want consistency, good food, quality, value and awesome desserts give it a try. The service is good, and its comfortable. Its always packed, and its not just old people that go there. This is a BIG misconception. Its mostly families and people in the 35-55 year old range that frequent the restaurant. Pros: Good comfort food like meat pies, turkey dinners, chicken cutlets, chowder and chocolate layer cake. Cons: I can't think of any.

Gregg's has all your favorite foods and New England staple dishes. Their desserts are awesome and they are affordable. But I have to criticize them in one area, takeout. I usually get takeout a couple times a month while at work. It seems like fifty percent of the time I missing something in my order. Make sure you check your food before you leave the restaurant.

I can see why some people aren't crazy about this place but I have to give it 5 stars, here's why: I've been going to Gregg's since I was a little kid with my family so it holds a special place in my heart. I only Got spaghetti and meatballs until I was an adult then I tried everything on the menu. When a place prepares so much different food You can't expect it to all be great but most of it is Pretty damn good. The portions are very "AMURRRRICA" meaning excessive and overly big. If you split an appetizer and get a meal you most likely won't be able to have dessert. That is truly a shame because their dessert menu is one of the greatest you'll ever see from a restaurant. The pickles you can get upon request are simply amazing, not to bitter, not too garlicky, you will ask them to bring more out. Service is always great and they are open until 12 or 1 in Warwick which is later than most places other than fast food. I'm sure they have a late night pot head crowd that orders from them all the time.

Greggs is a hit or miss depending on location. While their wraps and salads are great lunch options when dining out with the coworkers, overall, their food is honestly mediocre. Not bad, not great: it just is. Their bakery goods certainly aren't terrible, but again, a bit overrated. While I much prefer the Pawtucket location, I've passed through this location enough times to leave me.. confused. After hearing the constant raves and hurrah's for their strawberry cheesecake, the fiancee, myself and three other buddies stopped by late one recent Wednesday evening. Dreary and dark, the dining area was all but totally empty. After an oddly random five minute wait at our table, the waitress appeared, took our drink orders (four waters & one soda) and hurriedly left us sans menu, silverware or those funky little paper place mates. No connect the dots for moi. Chatting it up and relaxing, we quickly lost track of time before I realized it had been nearly fifteen minutes since the drinks were ordered and still not a sign of our waitress in sight. Finally, after Charlie flagged her down, she plopped our beverages down, menus in hand. Before pulling her disappearing act and much to her irritation, we placed our orders, all dessert & one appetizer. Again, we waited. Time trickled by, minutes ticked on. The dining floor still empty & after nearly twenty minutes had rolled past, I finally spoke to the hostess who shuffled somewhere in the back. Eventually the waitress finally appeared with our food, a cool attitude and, well, rushed off before leaving us silverware. And thus, after another unnecessarily long wait, flagging down any employee who passed on our radars and eventually receiving the check, we left our payment sans decent tip and headed out to the parking lot. We had barely made it to our cars when the waitress actually dashed out the front door and called us over waiving the check. For a moment I thought we had short changed the total by accident before I overheard her angrily asking about the tip. ("That's it??") Yeah. That's it. The cheesecake was decently priced but was a little too wet for my tastes while the strawberry topping was typical. (I prefer my cheesecake firm.) As for the service? ...No. I'll pass.

I have to admit that upon entering the restaurant, the smell of seafood on carpet floods the nostrils and if you're not prepared for it, it makes for a less of an appetite feeling. I went with the calamari appetizer and the Summer Picnic Salad. It really isn't that hard to get those two wrong but they were average. I mean, I won't go there again just to have a salad that I can have anywhere else. Nothing stood out except the desserts! Huge desserts in terms of portion. Great all American taste.

Well Gregg's gets extra stars for being the only place that serves food till 1am in Warwick. There are many good dishes here but my hands down favorite is the St. Louis style ribs. These were some of the best ribs I've had ever. The pork just falls off the bone. I eat them with a fork and knife because they are so tender even the bones fall apart. The bbq sauce was sweet but savory. Who ever thought a restaurant in Warwick would have ribs as good as I've had in Texas. Only downside is they are a Saturday special. Why, who knows. The cheeseburger was great too. Toasted bun, fresh veggies, excellent cheese, and a perfectly grilled patty that was juicy but not greasy. Other favorites pulled pork quesadilla, chicken soup, pickles and rolls. The fries are terrible so don't waste the calories.

A dying breed among restaurants, and I can't say that its a bad thing. A vast selection of choices, all of which are prepared competently but not interestingly or very well. There is a certain comfort food level at play here I guess, but overall, we're talking about food that stays away from being "too flavorful" - not the place to go if you want a lot of spice or robust flavors - their nachos are nothing but chips and cheese with some guac, sour cream and a few pieces of chopped tomato on them, god forbid if they put some peppers on there. Not really bad, but not really interesting. Personally, I'd rather go to Chili's and have something with flavor than go to Gregg's, but if you're looking for something like a Cracker Barrel/Bob Evan's type of place up here in New England, Gregg's is your place. HOWEVER, they do have really good desserts, especially their chocolate cakes, which are phenomenally fudgy and delicious. Those get 4 stars. :)

Not sure how to rate this, it really needs 2 ratings, food and then bakery. Food: Disgusting! Bakery: Great, great place to get a cake. And at $20-25, you can't beat it. A friend of mine even ordered a bunch of their cakes for her wedding. YUM! Even if you love chocolate cake, try the yellow cake with chocolate frosting - the best! But again, DO NOT eat at the restaurant!

It's a Rhode Island landmark institution. I first ate at Gregg's when this one, in Warwick, was THE Gregg's, the one and only. That was before most of y'all were born. Back in the mid-late 70s when I was an undergrad at URI. They really haven't changed in the kind of food, but they have expanded the menu to keep up with contemporary popular cuisine. Desserts were always the main thing at the original Gregg's. They paraded the sweets-du-jour in a ginormous glass display case you could drool over while waiting for a table. The chocolate cream pie was to die for, with real heavy-cream whipped cream topping and the best flaky crust that must have been made from lard to get the perfect flakiness. They still rule the dessert domain, though it seems they've compromised on some of the ingredients over the years, given the need to save money and the change in dietary preferences and healthy eating (yeah, like you go to Gregg's for healthy eating...), but it's still basically good ol' American comfort food. Between Gregg's and the old Nordic Lodge, another long-lived RI institution (the pig-out buffet never goes out of fashion), it's nice to know that there are things that I can always count on being there for me whenever I make a nostalgic visit to one of my favorite parts of New England.

(this is has been sitting unfinished for months so i should finish it) over the summer i stopped in here for dinner due to the recommendation of the hostess at our hotel. she steered us wrong. most of the reviews are by people who have been going here as a child and have the fondest memories eating here. since it has been a while since i've been here, i don't recall exactly what i ordered but i do know that neither myself or my dinner companion finished our meals. my food was bland and dry. the service was lackluster as well. i felt that our waitress just didn't care about serving us. she would go to the tables around us and not make any motion to come check on us. i asked her a question about the menu and she made me feel stupid for asking it. she just didn't feel friendly. i don't see what everyone else sees in this place. plus any establishment that charges you $3.95 for a 99 cent can of Arnold Palmers is no place i want to give my business.

You can't beat the specials Monday and Tuesday. Reasonable prices, happy hour specials but most important my parents LOVE this place. All their friends eat here. Save room for the cake. Gregg's is a Rhode Island institution not up there with Del's or coffee milk but pretty close.

Yummy sandwiches, great desserts, good food. They have daily specials that come with a drink and dessert. Definitely worth it. I like the fish and chips here and their thanksgiving sandwich. So good!

along with wimpy skimpies, ny system and dels, it rounds out the very definition of comfort food RI style. the dreary winter afternoons I would order take out and race home down 37 are too many to count. I dont miss much in the way of american food, but Gregg's french dip with au jus, french onion soup and OH MY STARS their desserts.... I would give nothing more right now than to have a debauched romp with some warm cookie pie in my mouth and all 7 layers of chocolate cake smeared on my naughty bits. oh yeah, its that good. this will definitely be one of my first stops in RI when I return for the holidays after many years away. I'm coming back for you Gregg's, its been too long!

Greggs is a RI institution. Their fresh roast turkey sandwich, clam chowder, fish and chips, the pickles, and the desserts. I am not sure that 2 restaurants equates a chain....Legal Seafoods is a chain that has restaurants all over the country. Greggs is just a RI place. The food is simple, but consistently good. It is good RI basics, from Italian to American. If you are looking for Mexican, hot flavors, spicy food- no, this is not for you. As for Derek A's assessment, Cracker Barrel is mostly in the south and is NO comparison. Except maybe chicken and dumplings. And to compare it to awful Bob Evans..well. Their desserts have always been oustanding, from the 7 layer chocolate cake, to the huge eclairs to the pies, etc. They can't be beat. It does have an older crowd, because the food is consistent, always good, and the prices are reasonable. Hard to find in this economy. Thay have not changed, and as someone who no longer lives in RI, I always make time to go to Greggs at least once!

Another RI classic. If you're in the mood for home cooked American food, then Gregg's is it. Their desserts are pretty impressive as well.

A great local chain restaurant/pub concept that is also well known for starting the POSitouch revolution. If you've ever worked in a restaurant in the past 10 years before you'll recognize this brand name as the leader in computerizing the ordering and ticketing system in restaurants. The local RI favourites are a must here, chowder, fish & chips, calamari, etc.
