I should have read a few reviews before visiting this establishment. The fact that the place was nearly empty on a Saturday evening should have been a clue. But I was thirsty and hungry and my girlfriend was as well. OMG, where do I start; We sat at the bar and observed the bartender with a serious don't want to be here look on her face. She's working a 12 hour shift till 4 AM...yes, 4 AM. We order a beer and a wine, the Corona is cold! I'm getting psyched! Then we start ordering food. Appetizers; Wings, half buffalo, half BBQ. They arrived in a basket all together, in an all together sauce, she had to point out, the BBQ is on the left, the buffalo on the right. They all looked the same in a soupy sauce. Obviously warmed over, not hot. My girlfriend also ordered the sample size chili. I thought it was Bush's beans. Mostly kidney beans, little flavor. Now, we both ordered a dinner, 2 meats for her, ribs and beef, 3 for me, ribs, chicken and pulled pork. It goes down hill from here...The ribs were tough, flavorless and warm. Her sliced beef was truly inedible. Her mashed potatoes had to be from yesterday. My pulled pork was scary bad. The pork was cool, yellow and mixed with foreign stuff, I don't even know what. I do have to say, my chicken was good. The BBQ sauces, mild & hot were just awful. Flavorless and watered down. We called the Manager over who indicated she was new, saying she had heard these complaints before. We indicated we were not looking for freebie's, just wanted to bring this to her attention. Never again.

Went to this place with high hopes fueled by great third party reviews but was wildly disappointed. The interior was nice and clean, had just been remodeled but that didn't help the food at all. The waitress wasn't very attentive or knowledgeable. I had a gluten allergy and asked about their BBQ sauce and her response was, "I'm not sure, sounds like something you should google" - most places like that have unique BBQ sauce recipes so that response seemed rude and unintelligent. The food was terrible. Ribs were dry. Pulled pork was flavorless and the wings were under seasoned. We also both got sick afterwards. Needless to say we're not going back anytime soon.

I've eaten here 3 times in the past 15 years. Each time I had gotten out of the car and when I smelled the BBQ sauce, my mouth watered, but I was disappointed each time. Their ribs just aren't as good as some people say it is. I would say that its a lot less tastier than Outbacks. As one reviewer had said, burnt on the outside, and tough on the inside, and the bone to meat ratio isn't uniform. Well, its a novelty that one needs to experience.

The St. Louis style ribs I ate were tough, and I wasn't a fan of the sauce. The BBQ chicken was better, but if you have the word "Rib" in your name, I want really good ribs. These were just alright.

I've been everywhere, man. And most places I've eaten BBQ. Memphis (Central BBQ, best I've ever had), Amarillo, St. Louis, Dallas, Columbia SC (Maurice's Piggy Park, thank you very much and pass the mustard), Kansas City, Houston, Macon. Yup. Had some good BBQ. Just not at Wes' in Providence. I had such high hopes for this place, because I've had so many friends recommend it. I even wore my best cowboy boots. And when we walked in the door... whooooo-eeee! The smell was dead-on perfect. Figured I had a night of hickory smoked rapture awaiting me. Sadly, it weren't gonna be. It's a sorry-ass state when the best thing you can say about a BBQ shack is that the beans were pretty good. Look, I can sure get why someone stumbling into this place at 2:00 AM drunk as a skunk would think they'd just found heaven. The prices are reasonable (stuff yourself on the three-meat combo for $14.99). The staff is very friendly, and while we weren't there when the post-club cattle drive came on, I gotta figure they handle that crowd pretty well. But everything here was disappointing. It seems they start out pretty good with their meat, because it was all very thoroughly smoked. But for whatever confounded reason, they feel compelled to take lovely smoked meat and throw it on an open flame and char the holy life out of it. It was difficult to savor the smokey flavors that sure enough took hours to develop, because they were buried in bitter carbon that was forced upon these innocent cuts of meat in a few minutes of high-temperature abuse. When you pick up a chicken leg and black flakes of charred skin cascade down onto your plate and your lap, y'all know you are in a heap o' trouble. I ordered a three-meat combo, with chicken, "big ribs" and pork chop. I picked the large pork ribs over the baby backs, because baby backs are the easiest thing to screw up so I figured I'd check out how they did with the easy stuff. All three were dry, the chop so desert gulch dry that I had to take a big swig of beer just to swallow each bite. After finishing that my jaw was pert near tuckered out, so I switched to the chicken. Now the chicken itself was mighty tasty and the least dry of the three... once I chipped off the brittle, blackened skin. The ribs? What meat was on 'em wasn't worth the effort, because it was cooked to death. Sometimes you can save bad BBQ like this with a good sauce... or at least make it slide down a little easier. Not so at Wes.' They have two sauces, a "mild" which is nearly flavorless, and a "hot" which is merely hot and not much else. Both are about as thick and rich as tap water. The cole slaw was pretty good. The beans were pretty good. The "famous" cornbread tasted a lot like Jiffy mix to me, but it was warm and they served it with real butter, and it was the one thing that hit the table that wasn't overcooked to buzzard-bait dryness. I wish I could share the local fever for this place. Maybe if I went out drinking and smoking up all night and stumbled in after everything else was closed with an ornery case of the munchies I might have a greater appreciation. So, why two stars instead of one? Our waitress was the shizzle with the bazizzle... friendly, charming, informed, engaging, funny. As a matter of fact, I dead-panned her a sarcastic wisecrack and she lobbed it right back without breaking character. Very impressive. Also, it's kind of a cool physical plant... colorful location, clean, spacious... nothing like a southern BBQ shack, but comfy. I've read a bunch of reviews of New England BBQ places on Yelp written by southerners, and they ain't been too kind. When it comes to Wes' I gotta agree with 'em. LJ's on the Providence-Pawtucket line is a whole heckuva lot better, but it ain't A&R that's for damb sure. But if anyone tells you that all New England BBQ is about as worthwhile as goose poop on a pump handle, you direct them up to Redbone's in Somerville MA. Their teeny-tiny plastic sauce cups piss me off no end, but the sauces in them are so good, and the meat prepared so perfectly (get an Arkansas rib), you'll think you've died and floated off down south of the Mason-Dixon line.

I think the ratings on the food for Wes' are a little harsh. While I'm a New Englander who admittedly knows nothing of the "Southern way" of barbeque, I do know good food. Wes' is good. I don't know what kind of pork sandwich Corey A. bought, but I always get the pulled pork and it's always just that -- pulled pork. And it's damned tasty. It better be. It's my favorite BBQ item. My boyfriend's favorite? Ribs. Almost everywhere we go that serves ribs, he's gotten them. He digs Wes' ribs, and I respect his opinion. At this point I consider him a connoisseur. To top that off, I've stolen a rib or two from his plate/styrofoam take-out box and I have never wanted to put it back. It's usually an exercise in self-control not to try to steal more. Their sides are delish. Beans I want more of, coleslaw begging to be gulped, cornbread I want to slop through everything on my plate. See? I can eat BBQ like a Southerner... Wes' can put a bit of a dent in your wallet, unexpected considering its location, and sometimes when I go in to pick up take-out the cashier/hostess is less than welcoming. But the place smells like a BBQ pit. That's something I can get behind (or into?). I don't understand the extra BBQ sauce they stick in with my take-out. It tastes nothing like the baste on the meat, and frankly it isn't needed. All-in-all, though, for a gal who'd rather not cross the Mason/Dixon, as long as I'm in the Ocean State, Wes' is where I'll get my BBQ.

Is this place still open? Every time I go in there I feel like the only patron in the place. I usually belly up to the bar and prepare to get dirty. I like the place, it is a bit hidden but worth the visit. The ribs seem authentic and I've always enjoyed them. I wouldn't say they are the best ribs I ever had, but it's worth a visit.

I'd like to add BBQ to that shortlist of topics you're not supposed to talk about with strangers. Everyonehas their own concept of what "good" BBQ is and what one personmight find stunning another person might spit at. I'm not here to debatethe finer points of BBQ, heck, I'm a northerner, I don't even knowthe finer points of BBQ. I just know I like good food. Atmosphere: Wes' atmosphere mixesTex-Mex with industrial brick & mortar. There is plenty of Southern Décor juxtaposed with glowing neon signs andexposed rafters. The place is a little more cold than homey, but its stillinviting. Menu: Wes's menu runs the gamut fromribs, burgers, loaded cheese fries, chili, chicken, etc. This is not the placeto go if you are on a diet or if you're Vegan. Appetizers: Wes' Chili is tasty, Ithink it had a too few many beans and not quite enough meat, but otherwise Ienjoyed it. It cost a buck extra just for cheese & onions, which I was notinformed about when I ordered. My companions and I all ordered a side ofcornbread which was simply delicious. Served warm with butter on the side, it'sa must-have. If you're lucky your meals will come with it, but if notjust go ahead and order a side. Entrees: For my main course I decided togo with the pulled pork sandwich, which left quite a lot to be desired. Thissandwich was more like pork puree. It looked like it had been chewed up andthen spit back out again. This is not what pulled pork is supposed to looklike. I did not question it at the time because a.) I was hungry and b.) I waswith mixed company so I did not want to make any fuss. I can only wonder as towhether or not there was some sort of confusion in my order. Aside from looksit was tasty at least, but it left a lot to be desired. Accompanied by waffle fries which Igobbled up, the only thing that would have made this experience even betterwould have been a pickle. I cannot fathom how or why they do not carry pickles. It should be a crime. Instead the sandwich came with a side of slaw which didn'tquite hit the spot. I'm not a huge fan of cole slaw to begin with but Iwill always eat it if its good or if I'm just really hungry and I want tofill up. I think the slaw was a little too heavy on the vinegar or whatever itwas that gave it sort of a tart taste. I like my slaw wet, creamy, and sweet. Last Fourth of July I happened to findmyself at a cookout where someone was kind and generous enough to bring alongsome of Wes' famous ribs. There appeared to be two different kinds ofribs, the first was either a spear or baby back rib, and the other were "big"(I think Carolinastyle?) ribs. Both were smoked with a nice dry rub. The spear ribs didn'thave much meat and were on the dry side, but I enjoyed the heck out of the "Carolina" ribs. They were succulent and juicy. The ribs came "naked," sans anysauce, and were accompanied by two giant tubs of BBQ sauce, one was a "mild"which didn't really have much flavor, and the other was "hot"which didn't have much flavor either, except it was "hot". Value: Wes' isn't cheap but Ifeel as though you get what you pay for. Just be prepared to drop about $20 perperson. Service was excellent. We arrived just aroundhalf past midnight and we were seated right away. Our server was friendly andattentive. The deal with Wes' is that they'reopen late. People come stumbling in at the wee hours of the morning. After anight of clubbing, drinking, smoking, or whatever, it's nice to have alate-night munching option that isn't IHOP or Denny's. Timing iskey though if you don't want to have to put up with the drunk andobnoxious clubbers. The parking lot is a mad house, it'd be nice if theycould expand into that empty lot. My companions and I stood outside after ourmeal talking for about ten or fifteen minutes and in that span of time therewere at least half a dozen cars that came in, looked around for spots, and hadto back out because of the way the lot is shaped.

If you have "rib" in your name, I expect the ribs to be good. They really weren't here. We went on a Saturday night at 7pm and it was totally dead inside. That should've been a sign. I took my first bite of ribs: burnt, fatty, chewy and gross. I kept going, thinking that maybe it was just a bad bite. Or a bad rib. Or a bad 1/2 rack. Nope, they were all terrible. The only thing redeeming about them was the BBQ sauce, which was delicious. But in all seriousness, I have had better ribs at Chili's. Some of the sides we got were a little better. The cornbread was fluffy, buttery, warm and quite good. The waffle fries were very good; nicely seasoned with fluffy potatoes inside. The nachos were a bit sad... Once we ate the chips on top, there was no cheese left on the plate and we were left dipping plain chips into a side of sour cream. They were still better tasting than the ribs though I have to say. The reason for the two stars is the cocktail I had called the "maple old fashion" which was basically an old fashion made with maple bourbon. It was very strong with just a hint of sweet, and very well muddled. Their bartender is good. Our server was less than friendly and seemed to be annoyed by our presence. She came to check on us often because she really had nothing else better to do, but seemed bothered every time we asked for something. Also, this neighborhood is pretty scary, at least the area behind the restaurant is anyway. Nobody in their right mind is going to come here unless the food is amazing, which is obviously why it was dead in there when we went. On our way home, we definitely passed a super obvious drug deal and what looked like some hookers. There were cops patrolling the parking lot though, which did make me feel a little better. But still, if I'm going to put up with the neighborhood, you better be worth it! I'm sad to say that Wes' is not. Also I got a massive stomach ache later that night. I don't think I'll be returning.

Well, this truly is a mixed bag. I must admit that I am from being from Texas and have lived in Georgia for 6 years, and yes, that does count for something when it comes to BBQ. So let me just go through what I and the family ate and shared. 1) Chili - Skip it. First they served it to me stone cold. After nuking in the microwave, all of the vinegar came rushing up. Who does that to chili? 2) Onion Rings - If you like the Beer Battered stuff, you will love these. Hot, crisp and not to over the top on the batter. It was just right. 3) Beans and Cole Slaw - This was split. I liked both, my wife liked neither. The Cole Slaw has vinegar base, which I like. The beans were just different. Not that I would go out of my way to eat them, but they were good 4) The CORN BREAD is worth going in for, With the real butter, it is great. My wife is a huge fan of sweet cornbread. It is starting to grow on me. Not the usual fare down south, at least not in Tejas. Maine's: 1) Baby Back Ribs - too little meat and too dry. - Skip 2) Regular 'Big' ribs as they call them - Worth the trip. Big and meaty with good flavor. I would go back for these ribs. Even the wife approved. 3) Chicken. I must say that this is a winner. I am not a huge smoked chicken fan because it tends to be dry. These were fantastic. Great flavor and moist. 4) Pork Chops were very good as well. Moist, and flavorful. Now, there is the issue of not having un-sweet tea in hand. They will get you run out of town south of the Mason-Dixon. So I am a little disappointed. I am giving this 4 stars, all though I think it is more in the 3 to 3.5 rage, but there seem to be some fairly harsh critics out there and this does deserve a little more respect.

Wes' only gets three stars because of their corn bread and cheap beer. I was pretty disappointed with the flavor of their baked beans, mac and cheese, bbq pulled pork, and chicken. All the flavors were wrong for different reasons: baked beans were too sweet mac and cheese was dry with almost no flavor chicken tasted a little charred bbq pulled pork was a little too tangy but oh that corn bread is to die for - it comes out in a good size portion nice and warm with butter and it just melts in the mouth I don't know. In the end I'm not ready to give up on the place because of the cornbread and the cheap beer: Magic Hat (on draft) for 3.75. That's pretty awesome if I do say so.

Ate there once and didnt like it... my wife tells me, "give another try"... for what!? the worse ribs I had.. we ordered baby back and they wer huge (looked like dinosaur ribs) and burnt! my wife calls back to make sure it was the right order and the lady on the phone gives her a bad attitude and says "oh well, thats how are ribs are". sorry we even went there!.. im sitting here with burnt on the outside and soooooo tough on the inside ribs... how does TGI fridays have better ribs???! If they would of responded in a polite way I would of probably have not been writing this review but it seems like they dont care about customer service.

It sort of pains me to say this but this was the worst meal I have eaten in a LONG time. I went with my husband and a friend on a Friday night. There were maybe 6 tables of people sitting when we arrived and no one really looked happy. This should have been sign #1. We ordered drinks and appetizers right away. I received a weak whiskey sour that tasted more like watery Jack Daniels than anything else. I didn't come for a drink so this didn't bother me. We received our app's - nachos, ribs and jalapeno poppers (we also ordered buffalo wings but those didn't show up until 20 minutes later when the meals came.) The nachos were... terrible. The chips were the perfectly round variety found in high school cafeterias and were covered in a little bit of mozzarella cheese. The poppers were good but probably came from a box. Again, we didn't come for nachos so we let it slide. I have to note right now that I do not eat meat so any meat reviewing is from my husband and friend. I ordered a side of corn bread, salad and baked potato for my meal. As we were finishing with the app's pieces of our meals began coming out. I received my salad and corn bread and our friend got his meal (Rib platter) and the buffalo wings that were ordered with the other app's. My husband got his meal next and my baked potato came. The timing was off but whatever it happens. We start to eat and I snag a bite of mac and cheese. Whoa. Pasta shells covered in mozzarella cheese. Not good. I try the mashed potatoes. THEY WERE INSTANT. Straight out of a box. This is a BBQ place folks, WHY ARE THE MASHED POTATOES INSTANT?! We asked the waitress and she said "I think they use the flakes". Oh lawd. Apparently the ribs and pork were good but nothing to write home about. After the mashed potato fiasco we were just done. They get 2 stars solely because the cornbread was good (it was probably box mix but whatever it was tasty) and because we felt so bad for the waitress. She totally knew everything was bad and tried to help. I really expected more and tried to go with the flow of the meal but I just couldn't. I don't know if the economy or the area is having an effect on Wes' but I definitely won't be coming back.

This is definitely a Rhode Island institution that has to be tried. The food is OK . My last visit had to be the worst yet. I went with my son on a Thursday night, wasn't very busy, 2 tables tops. There's a bench when you first walk in, wasn't sure if it was seat yourself, in the past I've been seated, we sat there maybe 10 minutes with waitstaff passing us every few minutes. We walked out after being ignored another 5 minutes.

Sweet tea: 4/5 Cornbread: 4/5 Pork Ribs: 3/5 Chicken: 5/5 Collard greens: 4:5 Wait time: 5/5 Price: 5/5 Overall opinion: 4/5 Felt like ribs could have been smoked a while longer because it wasn't as tender as i thought it would be...although the chicken was beyond amazing! so soft, succulent, and packed a good punch with the slightly tangy bbq sauce. sweet tea here was ehhhh, it didn't taste up to par but it was close.... i hate to admit it but McDonald's sweet tea has the perfect sweetness to it, which makes it so ADDICTING! Oh, and I won $3 from their Scratchers hehe... maybe this place has some potential to hit the Rhode Island jackpot!

I've been to numerous barbecue places in Rhode Island and it's only been worth my time to review three. This is one of them: the other two you can check my reviews to see my opinion...they are at least humorous-trust me! As for Wes, hands down, this is finger lickin' barbecue. The sauces are good, possibly reaaallll good but I've been to the south so I'm a hard sell. The ribs are mean and come in the short and the large variety (NICE!) and the chicken is cooked just right without falling off overcooked and dry or just bland. Their sides aren't bad. The collard greens are cooked in a bit of a reddish hot sauce or something which kind of threw me. They shouldn't get too creative! Collards are good for their own merit but all in all, they were still pretty good considering it IS Rhode Island. I love their chilli which you can get with anything and the random cornbread they throw in is actually worth eating. One of the best things about this place is definitely the way you can order your food, not too much or just right, they definitely do feed you for the money you pay which is, on a scale of barbecue joints-pretty fair and not at all expensive. I generally am picky about waitstaff because when you work off tips, you should have the brain cells to be nice to folks-that's how you get paid after all!! Well, this place definitely gets it on that point. I've picked up lunch and met the cook right there geting my food and offering anything else, condiments, etc...I could need. The waitstaff is friendly, helpful and frankly, just fun. The bar if you stay in is a solid easy going 8 out of 10 if you're hanging out and washing down some homestyle barbecue. The really wierd part is where it's located, kind of out of the way but I like the lack of traffic and ingress of cars, so I liked that kind of funkiness. I think if you're looking for solid good barbecue in a decent, laid back casual atmosphere with a welcoming bar, this is it. Ladies, if you're having that craving this is definitely it! If you're hung over and NEED it, don't walk, run to this food-it's got what you need-a touch of home, spice, lovin' and down home comfort. Jump in folks, the water's just fine on this joint.

Where does a girl go when the bars are closing on the West end and she's in serious need of some late-night grub? To Wes' in Olnyville, of course! This will forever go down in history as the place where I broke my vegetarianism once and for all. Out with some school chums, I was quite "overfed" from a night at the E&O and I needed something meaty to sop up my shame. Everyone was ordering ribs, which I hadn't eaten in well over twelve years. I found the experience of eating the ribs to be a little too "real," what with all those bones to pull the meat from like a cave-girl. This isn't Wes' fault. The meat itself was tender and fatty and everything you want in a late-night rib. When I go now, I order the seasoned waffle fries. There's nothing special or uncustomary about these fries, but they tend to be exactly the sort of junk food I want after a night on the town. The outside is crispy and brown; the inside is reconstituted potato goodness.

man, only two stars for wes'?!? tough crowd... but, you know, i can see how this kind of thing happens. people are picky about barbecue. it's one of those things where someone's always yelling "well, this is OK, but the mop sauce just isn't up to par with the one place i had it in memphis nineteen years ago, so this is crap!" and with this logic, wes' doesn't stand a chance. there's good stuff and bad stuff on the menu. pulled pork? good. smoked pig platter? awesome. grilled chicken? eh. ribs? eh, not bad. brisket? god help you. also, the chili tastes like dirt, but there's something really addictive about it and i still eat it once a month. i think it's vinegar or something in there. their "bbq chips" (aka fries) are awesome, especially dipped in their hot bbq sauce. they also fry a mean chicken finger. whoever's on the fry station is on the money. not the world's best bbq, but if you get the right menu items you'll make out just fine. the service here is fantastic. all the people are really nice, they're always on top of your stuff. i've been here thirty times and i can count on one hand the number of times i've had bad service. the place is always empty except for 1am on the weekends when everybody rolls in cocked off their asses and goes to town on 4,000 calories worth of stuff. i can get behind this. i was gonna give this place three stars, but i've gotta help get that average up a bit!

I wish I had read these reviews before going here. I will confirm the statement that the ribs are extremely tough and dry. At 13.95 for 8 ribs, I felt the need to return them. I asked for a boneless rib sandwich instead. The waitress then brought me a bill with the ribs still on them. After pointing this error out to her, she told me that "there was no way to remove it". I informed her that I wouldn't be paying for ribs I didn't eat, and I actually heard her mumble under her breath about me as she went back to the register. She then brought back a bill with a hamburger on it ($1.50 more than the rib sandwich), which I decided to keep quiet about. Then she brought me a bag with a hamburger in it, instead of the rib sandwich I ordered. I just took it, because I was so uncomfortable dealing with her. Then when it came time to pay, she was unable to do simple math with 2 credit cards and some cash. We would have paid all on 1 card if she hadn't assured us 2 cards were OK. The whole experience was so unpleasant it is little wonder this place has been off the "Best of" list since '98.

Only in New England could this pass as BBQ. Wes' is to BBQ as Texas is to science education. Just one example: when one of the BBQ options is beef you naturally expect brisket, but no, turns out it's a 1/4" slab of beef (not sure what cut) that's merely been cooked on the flat grill then covered in their wholly unimaginative grocery-store-brand BBQ sauce. Ok, one more: the cornbread? Basically yellow cake mix. Two stars: I didn't die.

There is a reason this place wins best ribs constantly for RI magazine. I haven't been here in a while and it has since been remodeled. It's nice on the inside more modern looking than before- when it was replicating an old saloon- the ribs are the best, my father and I split a pail which was 16 ribs (enough for two grown men) service was ok, my father felt rushed by the waiter and we had to wait a while for the beers to be served. Beer variety is smaller than I expected. The bottom line is: the ribs are great and you need to get them when you are in Rhody

I see a lot of people commenting on the food here. I'm afraid their missing the point. Wes' isn't as much a dining experience as a human experience. If you just want ribs, go to Smokey Bones, eat burnt meat, drink stupid-sized beers and listen to REM on the TVs, then go home to your vanilla wife who has only given you missionary since the wedding...If you want an experience that is as likely to involve a strange man screaming in your face as it is the actual consumption of bovine flesh, hit up Wes' on a Saturday night. And don't skip the corn bread. It's the stuff of legends!

The cornbread was good. Ordered the ribs and beef. Came with a spoonful of Mac and cheese, and a tablespoon of dry mashed potatoes. Everything was dry. The waitress was nice but left us to steal napkins off the other empty tables. Still left her a tip. But I'll never go there again. The beef was terrible. I think it was bad. They should give you a pile of paper towels or something. Maybe once this place was good but we were disappointed. Fatty chewy ribs with not much meat. All the sides did not taste fresh. I would have enjoyed McDonald's better.

Wes's doesn't try to be anything more than it is. Good smokey ribs and meat with really good flavor. They serve their meats with 2 different bbq sauces one mild and one hot. Their corn bread is always very moist. It is one of the best places to late night after a night of drinking:)

A group of us went about 2 weeks ago and, though the reviews of the place seemed mixed, we decided to venture out and give it a try. The food got an "A", but the service got a "D"... There were about 10 of us at the table and the waitress (only one of two in the place on a Thursday night) placed the pitchers of water on the table and walked away... And stayed away. When she returned to take the orders, she stood, literally, about 3 feet away from the table, leaning on the table behind ours as she wrote down the orders. Lengthy waits for the food were almost worth it as everybody was very satisfied with the chicken, ribs, and other meats. The cornbread was great, the beans were unusual but good. Maybe the waitress was just having a bad day, but it was off-putting and I'm not sure I'd go back.

(2+5) / 2 = 2.5 stars The chicken is delicious. The beans and corn bread, very nice. The "beef" tastes like the sole of a shoe that walked on burning asphalt. It was tough, dry, burnt and sorta gritty. It may actually have been a shoe. Are the ribs from Keira Knightley? They're all boney. The bar needs more and better WHISKEY! BBQ was made for whiskey and Wes' only has the same ol' shit as every other bar. I suppose it's a beer drinking crowd. Beer is good, yay beer, but have a nice smokey whiskey first. The spunky, pudgy waitresses were cute and fun to play around with. There was no bartender, just a lady standing behind the bar pouring drinks. One other thing. In the Winter, this place is COLD. The heater ain't cuttin it.

Went there late night 2am. Adequate parking its right next to club therapy..its easy to find...Walking in we were greeted by a waiter and we were seated immediately. I thought the place was bigger its just like half a place its deceiving from the outside. Our waiter was very nice suggested the Fully loaded chips (pics included) to start Well, they were definitely loaded lol..almost too much but it was good. I like the cheese sauce as opposed to shredded cheese. I had some ribs with their baked beans that my friend was raving about so i had to try them..they were good 3 out of 5. Their Mac and cheese was ok 2.5 out of 5. Im not the biggest rib person so im not a fan of the charred meat on top..but underneath was moist flavorful scrumptious-ness. Wish it had more meat to it...All was good until..The crowds came.. and i cant blame We's for that you really cant control who comes in and out but there was this guy who was at the next table from us who kept getting up and wobbling around with his beer and i swear everytime he passed us by he would let out a huge BURP! or you hear it in the background like WTF! it happened like 5X. Then he would be shouting Xtra loud to his friends right in our ears..grrrrr..on top of that after a trip to the bathroom I find puke in the sink..guess the person couldnt make it to the toilet in time..wonderful but someone did alert staff and they took care of it. Then the table in front of us had a girl who was hyperventilating for some reason.. i thought it was food related but they had not ordered anything yet..so i was perplexed. I guess thats the crowd you get. Other than that the two of us spent 22 bucks. Cant complain I would go again.... at different hour.

If the place has ribs on its name, ribs should be their best feature. I can make better ribs at home and I don't cook. Meat sticks to the bone, barbecue sauce is all you taste because meat lacks flavor. To be fair, I liked the cornbread and beans they served. Location is kinda shady. Went during daytime and was looking over my shoulder. Won't repeat.

Love the corn muffin with butter! Ordered the dinner platter with iron steak and Salmon, both were grilled well and were decent. Ribs were good. Must try the sauce. However, one or two pieces of the ribs were completely/mostly scortched. But will def return.

Honestly I don't know why I even gave any stars but probably for that corn bread. I learned a lesson today, that if you feel like sea food then go to a restaurant on the water, if you feel like ribs then go Applebee's! We went to Wes' Rib House for father's day, since my father in-law likes ribs. Total failure and disappointment! I ordered shrimp over rice pilaf and grilled veggies. Shrimp tasted like a rubber and rice looked like it was reheated in the microwave. I told the waiter that I was all set and had no desire to order anything else. My sister in-law's order was totally messed up and my husband's food came ahead of everyone with fries that were almost cool and soggy. I ended up having half of jalepeno burger that my sister in-law spited up. The ribs weren't tender and there was no moist napkins given until we asked. Even my father in-law who never complains about food wasn't thrilled with this place!

Gross. I've only been here on late nights and the ribs are NOT fall off the bone, more like stuck-in-your-teeth. Come here if you have a full pack of dental floss and you want to spend the next twenty minutes trying to pick the meat out of your teeth.

  • Maria S.

Just Awful. I wish I could just limit it to the food or to just the service but unfortunately I cannot. They were both equally disturbing. I ordered the St. Louis Rib Platter. It really had potential and it was a complete waste of probably very good ribs but hardly what anyone in St. Louis would want to claim as theirs. As someone below mentioned not only did it not fall off the bone but you had to fight it the whole time. Still picking it out of my teeth and I left better than half a rack on the plate. I will say this, the beans were good or I was just that hungry. My girlfriend had a burger. Just don't make that choice if you decide to venture here. Enough said. All in all what makes this even worse is that we try to support restaurants Like Wes' and are willing to take a chance. Unfortunately not only was the food not good, but the service was awful! We sat at the bar. The bartender could not have been less friendly or less helpful if she tried. Now look just for those of you who are reading this, I grew up in RI and live here so I am no stranger to individuals in the industry who can be gruff...no problem with that especially when the food is good or even just adequate...however, times are tough for every one so when you set out to spend the money to have a meal, you just wish you could have good service and good food...you get neither at this place.

in one word, disappointing. the bbq, the main theme of the restaurant, was really not very good. the ribs were tough and not very tender, the chicken is passable, and the pulled meat bbq tasted like vinegar. the only good thing, like others have mentioned, is the cornbread, but i can make cornbread at home! i came here for the ribs! needless to say, won't be going back.

Having been here numerous times, it's time for a review. The last time I went back was purely because my friend wanted to go there. I'd rather go to a chain like Smokey Bones or TGI Friday's for ribs, but that's just me. The place was not busy. About 2-3 tables with patrons max. We put our order in, and from what I remember, I didn't really like the ribs. But I decided what the heck, it can't be that bad again. Gosh am I wrong! Anyway, we ordered a bunch of stuff, appetizers included. We waited and waited, the corn bread finally came out. It wasn't even warm! I thought it was taking 20 minutes because they had to whip up a fresh batch and bake it. Nope, not the case. My loaded fries which shouldn't have taken that long, came out the same time with the entree. The ribs were soooooo tough and burnt, you can taste char. If you have loose teeth, I'd be worried eating ribs from here! Dentures also, take that as fair warning! I probably will not be back. The staff was friendly though so they do deserve that 1 star I can give them.

Went in here and ordered four sandwiches for take out, then sat at the bar to wait for it... and sat, and sat, and sat. 40 minutes later we start complaining that it's taking too long and are met with forced smiles, and told "they're working on it". A while later I get fed up and ask for my money back. The guy there pretends he doesn't know how to give a refund. Someone goes "to check on it" again, and I'm told by the bartender "they won't give you your money back." Finally get the bbq and leave. Sit down to eat it and we're rewarded with bland dry BBQ with no sauce on the sandwiches or in the bag for us to add, and only one set of plastic ware to share between the four of us. I'll never go there again.

I love food burned on a fiery grill and you can bet your ass meat is cooked on a wood-fired grill whether it be beef, pork or even chicken comes out so damn good. This place is not for those of us that are on a diet (ahem) hehehe, but I LOVE BBQ pork chops along with chicken. Another place worth stopping by ;)

  • Justin S.

I don't know what the hell people are talking about because this place is freakin' great! Where else can in New England can you get delicious pulled pork and cornbread at 3am? And they have Magic Hat #9 on tap, a huge bonus. This place is extra fun late at night, when it's still packed and locals bring their sleeping babies in strollers (??!!). The place has great character. A terrific fun-times spot.

My mother recently got takeout for my sister's bday party. It was terrible!!! She ordered ribs and chicken quarters, which came with two big tubs of what they call bbq sauce. The ribs were extremely burnt and dry. They barely had any meat on them. The chicken was also extremely dry. The watery tomato juice and vinegar mixture that they called bbq sauce was gross. Needless to say, I and all of the 45 guests that attended the party will never order food there again. What a shame! :(

I'll preface that I may have hit a bad day as the crowd was thin. On initial impression I was hit with a waft of BBQ smoke that screamed 'Wow, we've hit the right place'. The cornbread was the highlight of the meal, and our server was quite friendly. With the complements our of the way lets get to the issues. I wasn't looking for an entire meal as this place was a deviation to our original plan for the day, however, the appetizer menu listed a "St. Louis Sampler" which was described as a half portion of their ribs for $8.39. The dinner menu listed "Dinner" described as one meat choice and 2 sides plus cornbread for $8.29. Wait, what?!? This seemed odd to me so I asked our server to clarify, and I was told that the "St. Louis Sampler" included 4 of the baby back ribs and dinner had 8-9 baby back ribs on it. That cleared up everything... obviously I want to pay $0.10 more for 1/2 the amount of ribs and no sides. So I order the dinner. I was able to substitute the baked beans for collards which make me happy. And, when the plate showed up it looked great - ribs with light sauce and pre-separted to a point. I should have just looked at it since it went downhill from there. The ribs aren't 'fall-off-the-bone' but they're not supposed to be either (if you're true to KCBS (Kansas City BBQ Society kcbs.us )). However, they didn't have a good release from the bone either which told me they were a little underdone. The downside to the pre-separated ribs were than they cleaved them, what this means is the bones are cut right through at random places so you don't always get the right meat:bone ratio. So i pour on some extra sauce and chow down. This is BBQ, you're supposed to get your hands dirty (and most of my face); clean up shouldn't be left to cheap napkins and a wetnap so i head to the men's room to wash up only to find a BBQ joint that doesn't have paper towels. Really? So I turn to the hand drier that's from 1905 and obviously intended to annoy me and make me finish drying my hands on my pants. At least buy an Xlerator - exceldryer.com/products_… they're only $200 Sorry Wes's I won't be back. 2-stars on cornbread alone (4-star if that's all you order to-go)

  • Lars A.

Are you kidding me?? Italian run rib joint? Waited 15 minutes for the corn bread they forgot while 4 employees tried to do their best goodfellas impression

  • Matthew M.

Came here right after taking down a dog at Haven Brothers. Food hopping is way better than bar hopping. Had the cornbread which was so good. Then got a mixed plate of the St. Louis Baby Ribs and then the regular big dog ribs. Both were good, but I preferred the baby ribs. Much more tender and less fat.

  • Richie S.

I know it's not the greatest BBQ in the world by any stretch but there is something about Wes' that always keeps me coming back. What is great about it is that you can be in and out for lunch in less than an hour and you don't have to break the bank either since we all know how expensive most BBQ joints can be. Chicken, ribs, cornbread plus a side of beans and slaw for less than $15 you can't go wrong.

    (3)
  • Steven C.

Theres a few reasons Wes' has been open for so long...1. The smell. Once you walk in, the smell of hickory and BBQ hits you..and its incredible. 2. The bar. This place is great to pop in for a cold one. 3. The late night hours. The food, I've found, is hit and miss. I ordered a 40 piece tray of pork ribs for a party I was hosting. Everyone said they loved them, but I found the ribs fatty and tough. I managed to save them, however, by cooking them for another 2 hours in a covered pan at 275 degrees. After that, they were "fall off the bone" tender, juicy and delicious. You can't beat that Wes' smoke flavor.

This was a great place to go after being out having drinks because they are open into the wee hours of the morning. I stopped frequenting this spot after we had a rather enjoyable dining experience of bbq and a few of us were waiting in the car...guess what we saw? All along the outside of the establishment, rats were scurrying all over the place. The dumpsters the back stairs and most importantly right in front of the back door. I had never had a bad eating or service experience there but i could never get past that view....ugh...and I could never go back.

BBQ ribs over a real wood fire for almost 30 years. I love the remodeling. classic BBQ chicken and ribs always a satisfying meal. I look forward to the new and improved building but please do not change the sauce!

  • Joe B.

Been here on numerous occasions and it's usually hit or miss. I really want to love Wes' Rib House, but it's the inconsistency of food quality that holds be back. The only thing that is consistently good is the corn bread. However, the ribs and pulled pork are typically hit or miss. I believe, the issue is directly related to the staff of the night. Hopefully you are lucky during your visit. The portions are good for the price, but as for the food itself, either you are lucky or not.

    (2)
  • Mack L.

Wes' Rib House smells great and has a great BBQ menu but, a true BBQ enthusiast would scream bloody murder. Ribs are tough, chicken was dry and nothing fell off the bone. I do way better at home and BBQ means slow cooked with succulent flavor. They're cooking way too much meat. Chef Ramsey please revamp Wes' Rib house!!

  • Jess Z.

So I got the pork chop, it was a pretty small portion. It was really smoky and good, I just wish there was more to it. The cornbread is delicious! The rest of the food, not so much, the coleslaw tastes like paper and the fries, both regular and sweet potato were kinda gross. I live right near this place and wish I liked it better.

I used to go to Wes's 20 years ago when I was in college for late nights eats. I was in the area so decided to give it a shot. I sat down at the bar and ordered a sandwich. While sitting there eating i watched a mouse climb up behind the lottery machine. I informed the waitress/bartender who then said "i'm not going over there" and promptly sat down next to me. Needless to say I will not be visiting here again.

I think this place is OK for Providence BBQ. Try the BBQ chicken and the cornbread. As a New Englander, I have a large tolerance for BBQ and will eat stuff that would be ranked 1 to 5 stars by other Yelpers.

Wes rib house is an awesome place to just go relax and grab a beer, or watch the game on their 80 inch TV surrounded by two other huge TVs. The staff is very friendly and helpful and my meal was delicious. I will definitely be going back many times to enjoy this again.

Well..im disappointed tonight..the ribs were very lg..yet no meat..the mac and cheese and beef were cold? I didn't get it tonight? Quite disappointed? The chili was greatvas usual..the waitress was ok..she seemed new..with the dinners..it comes with corn bread ..but not tonight? And had to hunt down to get another drink?

It's been a while since I've visited however food use to always be good! Just visited tonight and it was a shame. Saturday night, pretty dead My wife and I has to wait at the host stand for 5 mins just to be seated! Mind you, the bus boy had to seat us. Our waitress was at the counter playing on her phone ignoring us for 10 mins until she finally came over! No personality, no remorse nothing! She gave us out food and never came back! Worst part food was horrible! Chili was gluey and mainly red beans! Ribs were dead cold and pink center! What a shame! Use to love it! Never going back! Oh and waitress finally came back after we finished eating! Horrible! Never again

  • Lauren D.

I am going to have to agree with one of the earlier posts; if you are looking for a conventional dining experience you should probably skip Wes' Rib House. The servers were unenthusiastic in the most compelling way, there was no music playing, only the news on four different TVs, and its technically on a street that has yet to be named. The food was extremely reasonably priced and the portions were large. The cornbread was amazing, the pulled pork was delicious, and the beef was really good and smokey. I might skip the ribs but the rest of the food was worth the trip!

  • Dan M.

I want to give two stars because the service isn't bad, but man, the ribs. This is a "rib house". The ribs are burn't, tough and chewy. Don't come here for good ribs.

    (1)
  • Andy L.

Oh how the mighty have fallen...Wes' was THE place to go for barbque, but the newly renovated space does not deserve the quality of food that was presented. Since I had a hankering for some good pulled pork, we thought Wes's might fill the bill. Instead I was served a tasteless, tough mush of meat and onions that neither of the accompanying sauces could help. The ribs were equally tough and difficult to chew, let alone gnaw. The chicken fingers tasted like something that came our of a freezer bag. The best part of the meal? Waffle fries that lost their taste once they cooled off. Sorry Wes' we will not return. Now where to find decent barbeque in RI?????

  • Corey A.

The first time I went here I left feeling as though this was a 5 star restaurant. This was because I was drunk and starving at 3am. I have since been 3-4 times--all sober--and I have to tell you that the food is actually really bad. The meat is often overcooked. The pork used in the pork sandwich was molded to look like ribs... think McRib sort of texture. It was absolutely gross. Their corn bread and sweet potato fries are pretty good, but that's about it. Next time at 3am when you're starving and think, "Yessss! Wes' Ribs is still open!!!!"... just starve.

I've always been a fan of Wes's and go there often. Despite the fact that its location is not the best and the outside is not appealing ... It's worth going inside. The food is amazing. They recently remodeled and it looks great. A very large bar area with plenty of Tvs would make this a great place to watch a game or throw back a few cold ones. It was oddly quiet on a Saturday night but we were there around eight and I think they do a big late night business being open til four am. Yeah I said four am. Much tastier a than a drive thru option after a night out. We were seated promptly and our waiter was very nice. Our food came out fairly quickly and was hot. We had jalepeno poppers which were crispy and full of heat. I had a huge burger with four cheese and jalepenos on it. It was cooked very well and juicy. Waffle fries on the side were perfectly seasoned and way better than the regular ones. I had some of my dad and brothers ribs and they were cooked well. Seasoned just a bit so you really get the taste of the meat. Top it off with their spicy BBQ sauce and you will be very happy. I was too full to get it that day but their cornbread is one of the best I've ever had. It's huge and melts in your mouth. I will Definetly be back and will recommend it to anyone looking for some good BBQ. Only thing that kept it from five stars is the beer selection. With Wes's being a local business Id like to see them with some local craft brews on tap.

I come here about once a month for lunch. The chili and cornbread are great. More than enough for a lunch meal. Their ribs are OK. The location is unique. Old mill in the jewelry district, Olneyville.

I don't know why this place is rated low. I would say this is a go to place for after bar hours. The ribs are great and tender. It is not like the usual ribs from other places wherein it tastes uncooked. This is a friendly place for people who usually end up having no other place to hang out during late nights.

Really great atmosphere which is surprising when you drive in... Delicious sides sadly I was underwhelmed with the ribs my little ribs were better than my friends classic. Cute spot probably just hit it on the wrong day. Also very sweet bar tender!

My son and I dined at Wes' for the first time in several years, so we were confused at first to see no outside staircase, then a new first-floor bar/dining room instead of the upstairs place (which we preferred to the new, though the setting is still nicely renovated old brick architecture). On this Wed. evening there were few customers and Jeopardy! on the 3 big TV screens (eventually switched to a Red Sox game)--puzzling. We ordered beer, a ribs dinner, and the Finger Sucker (2 meats, baked beans, cole slaw and cornbread). The latter was a bargain at $12.75, and the ribs and chicken really tasty with great sauce. I see some diners got ribs they thought tough and fatty, but ours were very good. The cornbread came first and warm, delicious with butter. The beans maybe a little too sweet but still good, as was the cole slaw. One other good thing is that we saw only one campaign sign for owner Michael Solomon, running to be Democratic candidate for mayor. In all, we were happy to return to Wes' for the ribs and chicken and old-time milieu.

    (4)
  • Shanice J.

The one star is for the corn bread. It was delicious and warm. The rest of the meal left much to be desired. The ribs had barely any meat on them, they were fatty and burnt. Not tasty at all. Will not be returning

    (1)
  • Linda A.

Had the Finger Sucker platter with ribs and beef. I thought ribs were pretty good. Not a huge fan of hard to eat food like ribs. The beef however was amazing, very moist and tender. Corn bread was served warm and was delicious. My husband had the Kansas platter with ribs, beef and pork chop. He thought everything was excellent. Although the location is not in the greatest neighborhood it is right on/off the highway. The restaurant itself was clean and I liked the industrial look if the decor. I would go back again!!

I used to love this place but after last night ....not so much. Still not over the fact that they completely mind fucked me when we pulled up & I'm like where the fudge are we? That's what happens when you stay away too long. I am not a fan of the new renovations it's too fancy for this type of establishment. It's pretty, but just doesn't fit with the Wes' I remember. The food was a little off I felt like I needed more meat ....I got lots of bone. The beans were good though & so was the slaw. Our waiter was ehh okay I guess Will I be coming back next time I'm in town?.......NO!

  • Megan O.

Had the kabob meal, cornbread and a "Kentucky Rebel" (a shot of Jim Beam Honey in a Rebel IPA). The food was delicious, you could really taste the wood flavor. I forgot to ask what kind of wood they use in their pit. The grilled veggie skewer was colorful and the flat iron steak was surprisingly very tender. Cornbread-so good, like the other reviews mention. The new addition is really nice and reminds me of modernized Olneyville mill spaces. The bar is cool too, some kind of concrete with a resin top. So happy I'm dating a true Rhode Islander, he's bringing me to all the RI institutions!

    (5)
  • Dave A.

Poor at best. Pork chops dry, ribs tough, baked beans cool, slaw tasty, corn bread excellent. Server friendly & helpful. Price for meal excellent. Won't be coming back here.

    (1)
  • Scott C.

I feel like a bad Rhode Islander for taking almost 26 years to finally try Wes's Rib House but I am happy to say the wait has finally ended. I liked Wes's but it did not wow me like I was expecting. Now lets breakdown the meal: I got "The Finger Sucker" which comes with 2 meats baked beans, coleslaw, and cornbread Chili-good but I would have preferred more beef than beans Cornbread-Out of this world my favorite part of the meal!!! Pulled BBQ-had a great taste that was enhanced when you added BBQ Sauce Ribs-not good at all. They didn't have much meat the primary taste was charcoal Beans and Coleslaw-Both delicious and a nice compliment to the meal. I enjoyed my 1st Wes's experience but will be sure to avoid the ribs next time. I liked everything else I got. They are in the middle of renovations so I wonder how it is going to look when they are done.

Ate at Wes' tonight... One word... AMAZING Diane the bartender was so attentive and helpful, I feel as if she made the ribs taste better if that's even possible... Highly recommend; I will be back for sure!!!

Been meaning to check out this RI landmark for a long time, but finally got a chance before going to see a show at Fete the other night. It didn't live up to the level of praise and notoriety that I've heard people attach to it over the years, but it was decent. I had the ribs and the beef, which were both pretty tasty (the ribs were a little on the tough side, though), the cole slaw was really good (the cabbage-to-mayo ratio was just right), and the corn bread was amazing. Seriously, I could've eaten an entire meal of just their corn bread and been perfectly happy... warm, soft, awesome texture, just everything you want corn bread to be. The BBQ baked beans I could take or leave. The most surprising thing was that it wasn't very crowded... this was around dinner time on a Saturday and there were a lot of empty tables. Not the best neighborhood or biggest parking lot, I know, but still, that seemed weird. I'd go again, but it's not like there's any burning need to, you know?

they are currently renovating, NOT handicapped accessible yet! Reasonable prices, extensive menu. Very good chilli, pulled pork and waffle fries! worth the trip.

I very rarely eat meat, but once in awhile crave pulled pork. Ordered pulled pork sandwich with a side of beans to go. It was really delicious...great flavor, and really tender and lean. It was really large too. The beans were very good also. I would definitely order it again...next craving! Restaurant was tasteful and very clean, and the bartender who took my order was really nice. Very reasonable price.

Was there Saturday night for my nephews 16 bday there was a party of 30 and only one waitress waiting on us ,orders were all mixed up food was so cold we got out food after waiting and hour in a half waiter was so over whelmed she was rude it was my first and last time

  • Linda D.

if you have fond memories of Wes's, preserve them by never going back. we got take out last night and the mashed potatoes were clearly tasteless flakes from a box, the cole slaw was inedible (bad mayo?), the ribs were boring and tough (we threw away our leftovers!), the corn bread left a strange taste in my mouth -- the greens were OK. Anything I could have found in my refrigerator would have made a more satisfying meal
