We use to eat here when we lived in the area and were younger. Now we have a 3 yr old and were in the neighborhood so thought we would visit. So we got seated and got menus quick. We ordered. all was going well. Until my husbands oreo milkshake came and was literally dripping down the side. The waiter said something along the lines of "sorry about the whipped cream, we ran out"....what? Quickly we got our meals. My husband got a hamburger and he said it was good. My son got hot dogs and they were black. burned black. He did not eat it and we don't wonder why. I had chicken tenders and they were alright. I also ordered cheese fries which did not come so when asked "is there anything else I can get you" I responded with the cheese fries. Well the cooker finished cooking them but the waiter was too busy chatting and they sat there. by the time we got them we were almost done eating and they were warm at best and cold in places. I also saw the cook tending to her phone a few times during "cooking" which is no surprise as to why the fries were forgotten in the first place and the hot dogs over cooked. Overall I would give it 1 star but my husband had a good burger. Service was terrible, guy looked new and confused and was too busy having conversations. Cook was busy on phone and also chatting. Tables were clean though so there is that I guess.

Im pissed the food sucked, very greasy, ordered a rout66 and two had no mushrooms asked for no seasoning had seasoning. The restaurant was absolutely filthy filthy. The tabe was so improperly cleaned. Had to move from my seating position twice. The bathroom door was sticky gross to touch. Water droped from the ceiling into my shake $5.00 waste and here is the kicker fruitflies in the vinegar that i put on my fries. I didn't notice until i mixed the ketchup with the vinegar and saw flies in the kechup thing they give you. My 2yr old daughter spilled my shake and the waitress was like in space and didn't see my waving to her for a towel i had to get up and ask the cook!! Then they had the nerve to ask if i would like to have the fries to go that i initially ordered from the beginning which was about 5 minutes after I was done eating. $30. Bucks down the drain! I hve seen the worst management ever three employees standing around as if they were lost

The food was not so good. There was a bit of a wait before the waitress came and took our order and they were out of chicken fingers. My friend thought his burger was too greasy, and my BLT's bacon was bad which I did not think was possible.

This is where you end up when your 6 yo chooses your dining venue. It really was not bad, but nothing to write home about. Husband and Kid LOVED their ice cream shakes. Their burgers looked appetizing, and I was highly impressed that you could opt for chx breast or boca burger instead of beef. I was also impressed that they had salads on the menu.... I ordered the Chipotle chick garden salad... think I could have made something more interesting. Next time, I will let the kid and hubby go by themselves.

After an exciting P-Bruins win, my son and his girlfriend asked for a Johnny Rockets dinner. Wandering back through Providence Place, we found that it was nearly 6--closing time. Fortunately, The PVDâ„¢ has a second Johnny Rockets in the very cool Thayer Street area. And this JR's did not disappoint. You know what you're getting here...burgers, fries and shakes. This particular outlet is small, with a nice counter that reminds one of a '50s style joint. Then again, that's the vibe that one gets in this place! Our server was adorable--a hard working RIC student who was very personable and sweet. She was working very, very hard to ensure the patrons at that counter were all taken care of appropriately. We were very impressed. Food is standard JR fare here. Be prepared to have large portions, tasty burgers, etc. I've always thought the shakes were a bit small, but that's probably my gluttony talking. Notes... 1. On street parking. I parked on a side street and walked a block or two to arrive...but damn, was it cold! 2. It's a hangout for Brown students. And some of them aren't all that bright (see my tip about the genius who couldn't understand what "just a minute" meant when he wanted to go to the bathroom). 3. The double burger is massive. Wow. 4. The crew doesn't sing and dance anymore. That knowledge makes me die a little on the inside. 5. Pricing has crept up in recent days...it's getting a little expensive for what you get. But it's still damn delicious. 6. In order to use the bathroom, one must grab a free token from the staff. I'm assuming this is so the average guy off the street is disallowed from it...which is illegal. A restaurant cannot, by law, require a purchase to use the lavatory. If you're dying for a burger and in the area, this place won't let you down. Just make sure you lock the bathroom door properly before doing your business!

The perfect spot when visiting the Brown campus! The staff is friendly, energetic, and always smiling! I love coming in here for a quick milkshake snack or a juicy burger!! My favorite is the chocolate peanut butter!! I recommend the sweet potato fries too instead of regular with the burger!!!

Burger is what I expect but this particular JR doesn't really make me a happy customer anymore. . First burger didn't come out as ordered and when it was fixed I saw it sit up there- in fact I saw all the food just sit up there- waiting to be delivered. This place just lacks organization and leadership.

Haven't been to this location in years but was in the area and stopped in for a milkshake. The place was filthy. There was lots of trash on the floor and while leaning on a ledge while waiting for my drink I discovered it was pretty sticky. The employee that took my order was friendly and quick. My milkshake was delish. Based on how yucky the placed looked though I'm not really interested in a meal here any time soon.

This is the first time I'm writing a review, and I'm doing so because I've never been so outraged at terrible service. Waitress that served us had a huge attitude problem. She practically threw the food at us, and leaned from the booth to throw us our food instead of setting it down nicely. She also threw us the bill, literally. However, she placed food on the other table nicely. Biased service, racist waitress. Left no tip for them, and will never return to this awful place.

Like any chain restaurant this place has food that tastes funny. Interesting concept...throw back to 1950's America, but other than that there is no reason to eat here.

So being an international, I wasn't aware of the Johnny Rockets culture here. My friends and I ended up in Providenve, RI, one time when we took the wrong train... We were hungry and checking out the scene here when we saw this place and they got all excited (they grew up here). It's a typical American food chain, I guess. Looks like the 1970's and 80's. Those seats, the uniforms, it's different! They had really good shakes and fries. Definitely worth making a stop for if it's on the way.

I'm not one for reviews, but this past experience left a bad taste in my mouth (literally). This was the second time they messed up my order using Foodler/Dash. I was a little ticked, but I understand that ordering through a third party means mistakes can happen. I called in and the gentleman on the phone apologized and corrected my order. However, I was foolish for not checking my order the second time around. As soon as I returned home I realized they had messed up my order AGAIN (& this time Dash/foodler was not to blame, because I repeated my order to Johnny Rockets over the phone to confirm). To boot, the burger wasn't even cooked properly & was mushy, but I was too irritated to make the 10 minute walk for the third time to complain. Overall this place was just extremely disorganized, and its employees need to pay more attention to customer orders.

I first went to the location at the Providence Place Mall, but when I discovered there was a location on Thayer Street, I had to check it out. My favorite thing on the menu is the Smokehouse Single, which is topped with bacon, ranch BBQ sauce and an onion ring. This burger is positively drool worthy. Then there's the vanilla shake, my favorite beverage choice. I always get one with my burger because it's so creamy and delicious. Of course, I always get some cheese fries, with emphasis on the word "cheese". The cheese fries are deliciously cheesy, and the bacon cheese fries are even better. I also love the onion rings, which are nice and crispy. I like to sit at the counter when I'm at the mall location, but on the Thayer Street location, I like to sit at one of the booths. Of course, I always bring a few nickels for the juke box. Nothing beats listening to "Crocodile Rock" while munching on a Smokehouse Single. The wait staff is nice, and they always greet you with a smile. The food is also reasonably priced, and the location isn't far from some of the shops nearby. If you're looking for a place with good burgers, this place is it.

The first Johnny Rockets I ever went to was in Nashville, TN, where they went all out. it was a big place with a full staff and singing, dancing, etc. This Providence location, downtown really doesn't compare. There were two people working and the radio wasn't playing oldies songs, there was no jukebox on our table and the ketchup smiley was non-existent. Enough with the criticisms. The food was DELICIOUS. Greasy and all-American and the shakes, were obviously, out of the world and well worth the price. I mean, you get two full shakes for $4. I wish the burgers came with fries, though. The shakes themselves deserve 5 stars.

Service at the counter was good, BUT! When asked if burger could be medium rare, the wait person said "we do med rare or whatever you want. Well, I ordered men rare less the lettuce, tomato, relish and mayo. What I got was a well done tasteless burger with excess mustard, which is all I could taste. But, the ice cream shake was excellant

Johnny Rockets is great for cheap, greasy American food. If you've had one Johnny Rockets, you've had them all, more or less. The service here is good. I've never had a problem with the waiters and waitresses, even late at night. Problem is, they start closing down after 10 and only allow takeout. This would normally be fine, but I felt as though the chef stopped caring at this point -- I ordered the Rhode Island Squealer (delicious) without tomato and my boyfriend ordered a Chocolate Madness shake (also delicious), but my burger came with tomatoes on it and his shake came with random bits of strawberry, which was kind of weird. It wasn't a huge deal, since I just pulled off the tomatoes and he pulled out the strawberries, but it might have been a problem, for example, if one of us was allergic to those items....

Not a fan ~ burger was mushy & raw in the middle ~ took forever to get the food ~ the 1 thing that was good was my son's milk shake.

I love Johnny Rockets. The food is always fresh and tasty. The waitstaff are almost always nice, helpful, and attentive. My favorite part of the visit is always when they waiter/waitress makes a smiley face with the ketchup. :-) This particular Johnny Rockets has a few things that knocks off a couple of stars. First is parking. There is none. Circling around trying to find a parking spot on the street is a PITA, even though it's to be expected on Thayer. The restaurant itself is quite small, and if you head over during a busy time, getting a seat is iffy. However, if you're craving a good burger, onion rings, and shake, this is the best place to go!

  • JLynn C.

Unfortunately I did not have a great Johnny Rockets experience here. After leaving the Byblos hooka place we stopped in here to eat and I was excited because I had never been to a JR. So I ordered chicken fingers and shortly after eating I felt like I was going to die. I went into the bathroom to pee and couldn't figure out how the hell to get out. So as I'm in here about to die and locked in I had to call the front and tell them the bathroom was holding me hostage. Needless to say I finally found my way out and my stomach continued to kill from the grease overload. I don't think I will return here.

  • Mike M.

The best thing about it is the shakes. I tried the squeeler, their bacon and beef combination burger. As a bacon fan, i thought it'd be awesome. However, it was disgusting. they found the fattest beef and combined it with the fattest bacon. It was not chewable. Awful. Me and my girlfriend both never made it to the second bite. And their foods overpriced.

    (1)
  • Michael M.

Johnny Rockets used to be much better years ago, but now its not much to brag about. I'm glad the Vanilla milkshakes still taste the same as back in the day and are still really good. The hamburger and fries are very similar to friendly's and thats not a good thing. I don't think I'll be coming back here just for the fact that theres better places on Thayer St. One of the highlights is the pricing, which is very good, but in this case you get what you pay for!

    (2)
  • Jef S.

It's a Johnny Rockets. So, yeah. I like their product overall; the burgers, fries, and shakes are always predictably good. But please, clean the men's room, guys! So gross that it (really) chops off two stars. Add that in with no private lot on busy Thayer St...sorry, you lose.

I had an extremely positive experience visiting this Johnny Rockets. Walking up and down Thayer, the neon sign posted at the corner lured a friend and I in to partake in some greasy diner food. If you go in knowing what to expect, and don't have an expectation of something the restaurant is not, then you too, can enjoy an fun-filled experience here as well. Sat at the counter and was waited on immediately by one of the college-age, if not older, employees behind the counter. All workers ran around with their white caps on, aprons flowing. Our waiter was extremely sociable, turning our average dinner out into a spectacular one. Though we did not receive nickels for the jukebox, oldies songs filled the small diner with enough variety that choosing a song was not necessary. The straws were offered to us in the usual spread. Joked about how the jukeboxes lined up made serving the counter customers a pain in the you know what. Food was satisfying. I had a tuna melt, with cheesy french fries, and a milkshake. You HAVE to get a milkshake if nothing else when dining here. They are absolute perfection. Creamy thickness, mouthwatering goodness pours slowly out of the tall glasses. Delicious!!! Very well may be the best milkshake I've ever had. Looking forward to dining here again on future trips to this busy street in downtown Providence.

This place disgusted me. I went in with two friends late one night just to get a milkshake, and let me tell you, with the time it took this girl to make my milkshake, you'd think she had to milk the damn cows herself. Walked in, there were two guys sitting at a table eating and two women at the counter. The associate stood at the counter talking to these women about her dying grandmother for about 3 whole minutes as I stood RIGHT in front of her waiting for her to turn and take my order. Talk about an awkward 3 minutes. She finally acknowledged me only because one of the women pointed at me, and asked "do you want something?" Appalled, I ordered my shake, and she kept talking. And talking. Then finally made her way to the machine and continued talking, not paying attention to what she was doing at all. Her waist length braids were beautiful but her customer service was butt ass ugly and my milkshake was weak.

Came here multiple times within the couple months and the experience has been the same. Its definitely a good spot to hit up if you're venturing down Thayer on a given Friday evening. But honestly, there is better competition on that street alone. Pros: Affordable quantities. Quick eat. 60's diner style. Cons: Service was sloppy, girl gave me a normal vanilla milkshake when I repeatedly asked for strawberry. Burgers are very mediocre, nowhere near In-N-Out or Fuddruckers quality.

Ho-hum. My six year old son loves the joint - but it's too gimmicky for me. The one at the mall is only slightly better. Don't waste your money ordering a salad. Ick. If there was a picture of the worst salad you can imagine - it would be theirs. Bathrooms are dirtier than you would expect for a Thayer Street joint. Go once, I suppose, to experience it with kids. Adults, don't bother.

Don't go in a rush Nothing to speak of, really Bring your sunglasses It's a chain; like Friendly's, only with less of a selection and a longer wait. This location stands out for me because it's a great place to people watch, but a bad place for almost anything else having to do with an eatery. Sure, the burgers are okay, but are too pricey for what you get in the basket. I generally want a little more than a thin patty and steamed and grilled bun for my money. The fries come in a decent size portion, but they're fries, they're cheap. The other big complaint I have about this location in particular is that the service outside is almost always terrible. I go here to sit outside; if I wanted to sit inside a Johnny Rockets I'd head to Cranston (and complain about the greasy tables there). On more than one occasion it's taken no less than 20 minutes to even get a food order in. Not to get the food, but to even order. Every time the waitress is very apologetic, but it's still really annoying when you end up taking a longer than necessary lunch because of poor service. When I do go here (generally always at someone else's suggestion,) I always get the chicken sandwich. It's not thin like the burgers, but a little thicker and a bit juicier. The short and sweet: if you want a great burger, go elsewhere. If you want to look at college girls strolling by, you're in the right place.

Food is what I expected, greasy diner. Good thick shakes, decent "jukebox." The staff is pretty friendly.. if they do it for tips, I can't tell. The only thing I can't stand are the annoying jerks from Brown University who go in there, order, then complain about the food. And then come back next week and do the same thing. And then come back drunk, piss on the floor of the bathroom and complain how the bathroom is piss stained.

Ah, good ole' JR. By far one of my all-time favorite restaurants. This one is way better than the one at Providence Place no doubt, way better service and no excruciating lines. When I come here I ALWAYS order the Eggsalad sandwich with a Root Beer float or a milkshake. Their Eggsalad is to die for and their milkshakes are heavenly delicious. I also love the jukeboxes, they always give me a few nickels to play a couple songs and the employees are always pleasant here. Five stars ATW!!!

Um. I like the music? The burgers are decent, but barely a notch above McDonalds or Burger King in my opinion (and I'm being kind, because I think I prefer Burger King) but the fries and onion rings are good as well as the milk shakes. Service is super slow though and the tables are hardly ever clean.

I will always have a soft spot and an appetite for Johnny Rockets. The whole theme and how it brings you back to the good ol' days, makes me happy. I love their fries and ketchup smileys. The burgers and dogs are prepared by chefs with a kick in their step. Sometimes, the mini jukeboxes don't work so well but either way, the Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy still plays on!

Tasty burgers. Kinda expensive. But god, those shakes are friggin awesome, and they give you a pretty hefty amount. Smokehouse burger + strawberry banana shake = gnsfkjvgs :D

Not the greatest burger, but it has a good location so we stopped by. Ordered a couple burgers and the chili fries and they were mediocre. Bathroom was pretty nasty when I went in. What they say is if a dirty bathroom then it's going to be a dirty kitchen! What can you expect, its a chain.

One night (before I discovered Stanleys) I wanted some onion rings. So I ventured out to JR. I was pleasantly surprised by this location. I was expected a moody teenanger with bad acne and an attitude to serve me. Instead I had happy go lucky college boy with a smile. He even recommened things to us! And gave us nickels for the mini juke box. The food is just like any JR, no surprise there. Our server checked on us frequently, held conversations and smiled a lot. I would go to this location again!

Yup, it's greasy. Yup, it's bad for you. But, as far as cheap, chain restaurant burgers go, they're surprisingly good, especially for a Johnny Rockets. I've been there a couple of times, and they've been consistently good with fries that are fresh, burgers that aren't sloppy or soggy, and attentive service. It's one of those things, if you have a hankering for a grease-fest of a dinner, it's a pretty good choice of places to go.

IMO, the best burger in Providence. Go with the Route 66. Awesome mushrooms, cheese, and onions on it. Cool vibe, 50/60's atmosphere. Milkshakes are great, as are the fries. This place can't be beat.

Stay away...STAY AWAY...unless you like eating in filth. If that's your thing, then this is the place for you. There is nothing really redeeming about this place. Been to other JR's and have enjoyed them. This one though is a disaster beyond repair. Literally just got home to write this (my first Yelp post ever) because I was so disgusted. I feel like I need a shower right now... I thought it would be a fun after school outing for my family (3 young boys) - you know, some burgers, shakes and fries...pretty simple I thought. Had to search for a clean table, and miraculously was able to find one (even though only 2 other tables were occupied in the place)...Anyway, after getting situated, it took forever for a server to come over (did I mention how few table were occupied) and then he had the personality of road kill (which may have been what we were served now that I think of it....and I apologize for being harsh on road kill - they deserve better than being word-associated with this place). So now we have our menus and start looking them over and another group comes in, sits next to us (at a dirty table that had not been cleaned after being left 10 minutes prior). ONly they were smart....no brilliant actually. After a brief discussion and careful survey of the warzone, the male of the group got up and left. HIs two female companions followed his queue out the door to probably have some good food and dirt-free atmosphere in the dozen of other Thayer Street eateries. I was so jealous of this group and their decision making ability. I wish I had my family follow their lead. You know, I am actually afraid of DCYF calling me for having my children eat in this place...ugh! So...onto the food, or whatever you call it there. Now I get it is gonna be greasy, fried etc....and it was...but the kicker of the food was that 4 of us get ours, but the server tells our 9yr old that the fryer is backed up so his will be another 5 minutes. Dude It's freaking chicken fingers - you should be able to crank those out like Octo-mom and babies!!! How in the world do you get backed up on chicken fingers and fries with 4 table occupied (yes another 2 groups of victims had been captured since our order was placed - I can only pray for them as I did not see what ever became of them). So here goes ladies and gentlemen....GRADE TIME!!!!! Cleanliness= ZERO, Service=Pathetic, Food delivery=Terrible, Enjoyment of meal=Non-existent, Any good parts (you mean besides leaving??)=milkshakes - but I did see a server practically lose a finger trying to work the shake machine, luckily ours were already on our table. Now I am no five star gourmet, I am as comfortable going to Mickey D's as a nice sit down with the spouse....the only thing I ever want is to feel like the money I spend is worth whatever I spend it on.....Well I may well have lit this $40 bucks on fire, because the return on this spend was like Enron stock...ZERO! Do yourself a favor....never board third world ferries in your travels AND never eat at this place...unless you are trying to break up with someone! And to my family, please accept my apology!!!!

This place is really going down hill. Waiting time gets longer and longer and the food gets worse and worse. The other day I ordered a burger to go and waited 20 minutes. When I asked for a refund the manager came out and said NOTHING to me. No hi, I'm sorry for the wait.... nothing. I did get my refund but I will never go back again. Terrible service. Not to mention that most of their staff is completely miserable.

One of the few places to pee on Thayer. The bathroom tokens are on the counter. You get what you pay for though. Last visit, the Men's room was totally piss-soaked! It may have been the site of the Great American Piss-Fest of '07. More whiz than an outdoor rock concert. Apart from the streets of San Francisco, I've never seen so much urine. Now you don't have to be Top Gun to be able to hit a target that's both WIDE and CLOSE. All I can think of is that there were a lot of little kids, and some kind of wild wienering was taking place in the restroom. I think they have burgers and fries here.

Yuck. Crumbs on the counter, a fatty, salty hamburger (topped with a dried-out, unmelted piece of cheese, a "tangy red-red sauce" that is apparently just ketchup, and mayonnaise that I didn't want), workers that hang around sullenly and carry on loud, annoying conversations with one another, overplayed oldies, and a runny, syrupy vanilla milkshake. All served up in a faux-diner decorated about like my milkshake: cloying sweetness, no substance. I definitely won't make the mistake of eating at a Johnny Rockets again, not when Providence has so many real diners worth patronizing.

Let's be honest. The food is not good. Everything is full of grease, you'll feel it in your stomach for hours on end. But they play crappy old music. So they've got that going for them.

so my RI friends took me here, and let me just say this place is what a 50's diner is exactly suppose to be like, its amazingly awesome. you gotta order something completely badass old fashioned their root beer float is soo good. and they got lil mini jukeboxes on the tables and counters. and they put nickels in front of all of them, are americans that poor, that we can't even afford to place our own nickels in them haha. they got some good selection of music. o and i was told that the staff has to pretend that its the 50's so if you ask them questions like who's the president they gotta answer as if it were the 50's :)

Cute theme, good milkshake. Had chicken fingers, they were pretty run-of-the-mill. I feel like we could have gotten better food at a mom and pop place, but what are you going to do?

This location is really annoying because there's always a TON of people here.. plus they have the music blasting outside so if there weren't enough people crammed inside, there's plenty outside making fools of themselves dancing and singing to the music... but, if you can stand all that their burgers and fries are pretty good
