Went here with my boyfriend and our newborn over the weekend in search of a buffalo chicken calzone. When we approached the building there was a line out the door! We knew that this must be something special, upon approaching the counter we were soon to be told they had run out of the buffalo chicken calzones....bummer! So instead we tried a meatball an cheese and we're not disappointed delicious! Can't wait to go back and try more! Calzone had the right dough consistency and was fresh! The inside was seasoned correctly and not bland tasty! I would come back and tell my friends!

Dear Mr. Bucci, I know that you would sprinkle a little something special on each and every one of your delicious calzones. The store has been closed for a few, due to renovations, and now that I have successfully detoxed from my last bender (a stretch of time when I dropped in to get a spinach and cheese, no less than every-other-day, for two months) I just want to say thank you for everything. The new storefront looks amazing (thanks to the craftsmanship of DB Glass) and I look forward to returning when Jeanette's reopens. Sincerely, bjs

Ask for a chocolate chip cookie warmed up in the microwave. The cookie is good, but the chocolate they use is to die for! One of the best cookies I've had!

The experience is awesome. First, the staff is really nice. Second, a giant spinach pie only costs $4?!! And the most important part is the taste. it's really favorable! The bread is chewy soft and compliments the filling!

Love the food! I wish they would have longer hours, usually closed by 1:00 pm and hardly ever answer the phone. I've called two days in advance and they can't make a box of pizza in that short a notice. I've called for two days now and no one will pick up the phone so I can place an order....

Only complaint about this place is the hours. Staff is very friendly. All the calzones are really good and cheap and the pizza is good too. Selection is usually the same day to day, but you will see a few different items occasionally (usually the pizza). Ratio of meat to cheese to dough is perfect. DO NOT go here if you are in a diet!

THE best calzones in Rhode Island! Always fresh and yummy! I can't pick a favorite because that are ALL amazing! The recent remodel came out great as well.

we LOVE jeanette's bakery. Especially after a night of heavy drinking. Calzones are delicious...all of them. This place is such a hidden gem. When we were moving into the city our mattress delivery gentlemen recommended it to us. SO glad he did. Get there early! CASH ONLY!

  • Jack C.

A hidden gem of Providence. They sell out fast, so call ahead to reserve your order. I recommend any of the spinach calzones foremost, and then the chicken Parmesan or cheeseburger. I deduct one star for their lack of an easily accessibly menu online as well as for their limited hours of business. I know it's part of the mystery of this seemingly empty shop, but it would make customers happier. Location is also inconvenient for pedestrian traffic.

I can't believe I've never been here before. It is absolutely amazing. The calzones are delicious. The spinach, pepperoni, and cheese is amazing. The filling to dough ratio is perfect. I'm not much of a carb/bread eater so I was a little worried when my friend suggested a calzone place for lunch. But they do not skimp on the fillings....and the dough/crust is perfect. This is a must try! Get there early and call ahead to reserve the ones you want. I went at 1 PM one day and they were sold out. The next day I went at 12:15 and they looked like they were running out. This is a must try! CASH only.

Great hardy breakfast! I got to the bakery at 7:35 AM on a cold, cold morning. The owner welcomed me in and sold be what was available. I will definitely be back for the breakfast Calzone.

One of my favorite bakeries. Made by hand right in the shop, each calzone and pizza has the best ingredients and the best value for size. Some items are not available every day so you just have to go with the flow. It isn't open all day so make sure you go in early. Not too early, as they don't open quite at 8am.

I've only been here twice and there was a line outside the building to the corner both times. Worth the wait.

Best home style calzones you can get in RI. And after 65 years, I would hope so! I usually go for their eggplant, spinach & cheese, or potato egg & cheese calzones. But I'm sure every one of them is as delicious as the ones I get. The people working there are also very friendly and helpful

A North Providence institution. Just go... ...but go early or there won't be much left.

The best calzone you will ever have, I'd probably choose the buffalo chicken calzone as my last meal if I were on death row. Great food, great service.

Get here early and don't get freaked out about the appearance of this hidden gem, best calzones around!

Love, love, love this place! No matter what you get from here, you won't be disappointed. They have awesome calzones, and great party pizzas too. My new favorite is the BBQ chicken! And yes, it's best to call ahead. They will gladly sit your order aside and have it ready for you when you come in.

Hands down best calzones around but go early cause once their out that's it.

God I love this place. Growing up my family always got their calzones for family parties and it's super easy to call ahead (like earlier in the week) and reserve whatever you want for a calzone platter. Our usuals are the Italian, meatball, spinach deluxe (WHAT IS THAT CHEESE IN THERE? SO PERFECT), steak and cheese, ham and cheese, etc. I could go on. Also a big fan of the breakfast calzone they do with potatoes, cheese, ham, and bacon. Their pizza strips are awesome too. The family that owns the shop and works the counter is patient and helpful. They happily call back into the kitchen every minute to see what's coming out of the oven and never lose their cool. Pretty sure this place is cash only, so stop by the ATM first.

Shhhhhh. A recent review in a local Providence publication didn't include an address because the reviewer didn't want the word getting out. This place is that good. It's an old bakery that recently got taken over by pizza bakers and now sells pizza and calzones to go. And by calzones, I don't mean "small pizza folded in half and baked." I mean square shaped with vent holes cut in the top, etc., etc. I've tried the eggplant parm calzone and the spinach, olive, and cheese. We're talking mouth orgasm, out of the league of any other calzone you have ever tasted in your life. Oh, and they're crazy cheap, running between $4 and $5 and big enough that I can't finish one on my own. No tables, strictly to go. They close when they run out of food, around 2:30. Do I feel guilty for letting the cat out of the bag? Nah. For the 10% of Providence yelpers who actually bother to leave the East Side and downtown, you guys deserve to know about this place.

I stumbled onto this place back in the mid-80's when I was working part-time just a bit down Branch Avenue @ Sears Service Center, and I've been a regular here since! Really appreciate how this hard working family gets started early in the AM, so that we can enjoy the fruits of their labor, once they open the doors, through to when they sell through their products for that day. Jimmy & Michelle are "good people" w/o pretense...never had a bad experience with the people nor the food. As other reviewers have mentioned - 1. no set hours...they close when there's nothing left to sell...once you get beyond 1:00pm or so, your choices are more and more limited; 2. call ahead...they will put together your order, so it's ready when you arrive, whether it's same day, or some day thereafter. As you can imagine, the timing of the call can impact availability of your order; 3. with the shear volume of product moved everyday they are opened, it is understandable that the later the "call ahead", the more likely you will get a busy signal. My fave has always been the "spinach deluxe" - spinach, cheese, & pepperoni, and also regularly buy the chicken parm, eggplant parm, Italian, and the potato/egg/cheese/ham/bacon... ...that being said, a comment on some of the lesser known calzones that have either been long timers on the menu, or been added through the years...and like the faves, just as tasty - bacon cheeseburger - never thought of trying a burger calzone, but if I was going to try it anywhere it would be here...and it didn't disappoint! - steak & cheese w/ peppers - buffalo chicken - as with the chicken parm, a nicely cooked chicken breast, plenty of cheese, but a nicely heat buffalo style sauce, in place of the parm's tomato sauce - spinach pie pizza - just as it sounds...one of their spinach pies, but with pepperoni pizza toppings - sausage wraps - J-U-S-T saw this item, first time, this week. Picture one of those cocktail hot dogs wrapped in dough apps, but waaaay supersized on steroids...and, of course, sausage wrapped, instead of a "dog". Spicy 5"-6" link (which I tried) or sweet link, with cheese, wrapped in their tasty dough... As the regulars know, it is especially fantastic if you hear "that's just coming out of the oven", and you're in there for that day's breakfast, lunch, or dinner, depending on the shift you work!... ...however, I'm never there just for that moment...if I'm there, I'm picking up "multiples" for myself, and or friends/fam. I've had calzones in my refrigerator (or freezer) for a few days, even up to a week or so, and found they come back to life, nicely, if you've the patience, to preheat a pizza stone/clay stone in the oven, to 450-500, and when preheating is done, microwave the calzone for 30 seconds, to help get the middle started, and then over to the stone for 3-5 minutes, depending on the calzone. It is rare to get great folks putting out a great products, nicely priced, period, let alone standing the test of time (for me, three decades). L-O-V-E this place...and I think you will too.

This place looks totally sketchy and one could assume that it was dirty. Don't assume, you'll be sorry. This place has the best calzones in New England. The italian calzone is killer. It oozes cheese, is chock full of cold cuts, and has yummy banana peppers mmmmm......The breakfast calzone is equally delish. Anything here is good but get there early because they sell out quick and close as soon as everything is gone!

The calzones are the freakin bomb at this place. Meatball parm is my favorite so far. I drove by this place a million times and it looks like it closed a decade ago. The sign is all faded and they close after they sell through what they baked. Someone from my office has always picked up from here so I couldn't tell you what it looks like inside.

If you haven't been there already, you should try it. Pretty simple menu, can't go wrong. Always a friendly face in there, and almost always a line to the door but moves quickly. Like others said, get there earlier if you want a better selection.

Not much to say that hasn't already been said about Jeanettes Bakery. The place is down & dirty, but the calzones are awesome. Pizza is very good too.

Forget about chain restaurants. Forget about commercial bakeries. This tiny, Providence hole in the wall has, for many many years turned out the absolute best calzones in the world! This is indeed the type of place that one tries to keep to oneself, as you hope it doesn't ever get spoiled. But too many folks know about it it now. There is nothing bad here, but try (1) the white pizza when they have it, (2) the 'breakfast calzone of eggs potatoes and ham, (3) the spinach deluxe, (4) the spinach deluxe, (5) the spinach deluxe. Every calzone is overstuffed, and weighs close to a pound. For a steak and cheese calzone like this to cost about $6.00 is insane. don't know how they make money! An important tip: the food moves so quickly, it is rarely displayed in their cases. Just ask what they have in back that just came out of the oven! Another important tip: Call ahead and put in your order. You'll get exactly what you want! Another important tip: Try the spinach deluxe!

Jeanettes has the best spinach pies I've ever had. They also have this "breakfast calzone" that has eggs, bacon and ham in it that's really good. They also have great party pizza. Everything from jeanettes is good, those are just my favorites.

best calzones ever. they run out quick, get there early. the spinach calzones are great but the chicken parm is to die for. the sauce is so good and there is a ton of chicken in the calzone. real cheap too. dont let the pure sketchiness of the place freak you out.

I have to agree with the other reviews. The place is small and they do sell out very fast try to call ahead (I think they stop answering the phone around 10am on saturdays or at least that is what it feels like). Back to the food awesome did not have a calzone or a round pizza there I did not like. They have a long list of calzones available @ 8am I say what the hell Italian calzone or a Veal calzone is breakfast of champions. The later you go the list dwindles and eventually disappears.

I love this place. It's a little hole in the wall hidden on Branch ave. It's a bit disconcerting when you first walk in, as all of the cases which in a former life must have held pastries are barren. Then you spy a couple of calzones behind the counter and the outlook starts to brighten. The later you arrive, the less choice you have, as they run out of things starting in the early afternoon. I had the spinach, cheese, and pepperoni calzone and it was great. I have a feeling this will be a regular stop for me. Cash only!

  • Kim S.

OMG I love this place! You have to arrive early because once they're out of food, they close up shop. The calzones are huge and oozing and delicious. I love that they haven't updated one thing inside either, it makes for a very homey feel.

I love it when tough girls call me "honey". Any of the short, tomato stained women working here are tough enough to kick your ass, and they all call you "honey". It's sweet and I love them for it. Spinach Pies and Calzones to die for. These are loaded with spinach, cheese, garlic, pepperoni, sauteed mushrooms, and a host of other goodies. Several different varieties available. Bonus points for not being pussy with the garlic. Helpful tips: They sell out fast! This place is busier than a half-price crackhouse. Try to call ahead. Or pad your schedule so you can wait 20 minutes for the next batch to come out. Always have a second choice in mind because they might have a run on one item. I saw one lady come it for 20 spinach pies. Try to get their hours and daily schedule. It can be unpredictable. Don't get nervous that the interior looks like a front for a bookie joint. Voted Best in the state, and they earned it.

18 bucks for a large pizza, and you have to order it a day ahead.

This place has the best calzones in the universe...hands down, no competition. It is take out only and 3 fat men can take up the entire waiting area...but i would brave a sweating Dom Deluise to munch upon their pigs in a blanket calzone. Locals don't rely on the grease stained paper menu crumpled up on the counter...we just ask, "What's left?"

  • Henry S.

Had the pizza recently and it was outstanding. Whatever minor deficiencies I find in the calzones (crust not crisp and cheese has slightly processed feel and taste) is not present in the pizza. They have thick cut squares of pizza with outstanding crust, good sauce, and just the right amount of cheese. The calzones are definitely delicious and I will surely be going back for another Italian grinder calzone and to try the chicken parm calzone, but their pizza is the real deal.
