this place is decent and cheap, but not great. i got the eggplant appetizer which is a specialty, and although the eggplant was good, the dipping sauce was obviously a store bought mexican salsa. the pasta was a little overcooked too. all in all, not bad, very pleasant staff and a nice spot, but not a great place

By far my favorite place for good homestyle Italian food. Their cavatelli is out of this world! Their soup of greens is also delicious! As a little girl I didn't really like their sausage but now that I've finally tried it again as an adult, I've discovered that it is delicious! The service is always great and the prices cannot be beaten. If your into unpretentious, good cooking I would definitely recommend this place for you.

Over the years on my way to Foxwoods this neighborhood restaurant was always part of the trip. Like another post mentioned, it was like eating at an Italian grandmothers house. Nothing fancy, just real good food. The veal and peppers or the tripe were always my favorites. They also will serve you a half order if you want to have it as a side dish. They have done a recent renovation and to be honest they did not have to. The food is good and very inexpensive.

Nothing will ever be as good as Angelo's in my book! I went to dinner there last night and ate like a pig and felt great about it. We had veal that was perfect and rather cheap as far as veal goes and lasagna! Ah lasagna from Angelo's is how my Italian mother would have made it if I had an Italian mother! I was concerned when they renovated that the prices would go up but I was wrong! Parking in the neighborhood is a drag but Angelo's has a valet and that is a lifesaver!

Awful, awful, awful. Most of my reviews are 4 or 5 star, because I usually review a place to recommend it. In this case I'm doing it to warn people away. It's unfathomable to me that this place's rating is as good as it is. I tried it 2 years ago and it was awful, and I tried it again yesterday and it hasn't improved a bit. Everything was bad. Pasta was mushy and overcooked, and the sauce tasted like my high school cafeteria. There were 3 of us, and it was clear from all our meals that everything was bad. There are so many great options for Italian on the same street. This place is permanently marked off my list.

I dined at Angelo's with my girlfriend on a Sunday evening. The decor is simple and had a nice old Italian look, which I'm a fan of! The menu was simple with the traditional Italian fare but with a home-cooking flare. We ordered a chicken parm and eggplant parm to basically split along with a side of cavatelli and a side of fettucini. The pastas were terrific and fresh with the perfect amount of sauce which made it feel on the lighter side so that was good! The chicken parm was fantastic. Once again, it tasted light but filling. The eggplant parm both looked and tasted like crap. I would highly recommend against it even as it appeared to be their specialty. I'm not sure if it was a Sunday night and the fact that it was fairly slow, but within 5 minutes of ordering [or maybe less], our dishes came out! We could not believe how quickly the dishes were prepared and we were a bit surprised at first questioning if everything was cooked or not but it was! Our waitress was very attentive and my waters were re-filled and the dishes were cleared promptly. While the cost of the food was very cheap and the chicken parm was a great value, we found that the prices we were charged differed from the prices on the menu. For example, the chicken parm stated $10.99 but we were charged $12.99 while the eggplant parm stated $9.49 and we were charged $9.99. We did get a salad which said it was $1.50 and we didn't see a charge on there for that but there was still a discrepancy. We commented that the eggplant parm was awful but nothing was really done with regards to our comment but we got out of there after spending $30 with tax and tip which was still very reasonable. Also, the restaurant did have free parking in the back which is a plus on busy Federal Hill.

A great Italian place! Its probably the cheapest Italian restaurant on the Hill and the food is awesome! Its a great place to eat before a show or any event in downtown because its great, filling food, and fast! There are no reservations though so go early and put your name in to make sure you have enough time!

Angelo's was featured by the Food Network on Guy Fieri's Diners Drive-Ins and Dives. I loved the restaurant because the food tastes great and comes in healthy portions at a cheap price. Since I ate dinner here with my co-workers during a business trip, we were able to order a lot of items on the menu with our dinner allocation. The meatballs and fries, stuffed mushrooms, and fried calamari are very good. Angelo's is known for its veal and peppers entrée. I tried it and it is exceptional. The pasta is also fresh and tastes great. We topped it off with the delicious desserts. It was formed in 1924 and they have the original countertops. Depending on your perspective, you may find it retro or think it is dirty. Do not let looks fool you. It is a great place to eat. Get the lobster ravioli -- delicious! There is parking behind the restaurant, which is very handy on federal hill. The place can get busy on Friday/Saturday night, and it can get a little loud inside. However, if your party is all of age, there are some tables and booths near the bar that were quite cozy!

After recently spending a weekend in Providence we happen to come down into the Italian section of the city and stopped in here I had the lasagna which apparently had already been made because they brought it out very quickly and my partner had spaghetti. Now at this restaurant they don't call the pasta sauce "sauce"; they call it "gravy"! And the spaghetti does not come with meatballs, you have to order them separately, otherwise you just get the 'gravy' with meat mixed in it. My lasagna was very good and it's was a generous portion. Since it had already been made the lasagna was served to me within less than five minutes as was my partners spaghetti and gravy with a side of meatballs. We were served Italian bread but it was kind of hard and plain. The staff vastly outnumbered the amount of people dining there around 5pm. But they were all very friendly and there were TVs to look at while you dined. We both like the sauces on our pasta. Mine was roasted and the spaghetti and regular sauce both were delicious.

Meh. I should have known based on the reviews that this place was not going to blow me away. The service was okay and the food was sub par. We had the chicken parm which was okay. The veal and peppers were decent. The meatballs were flavourless and so were the sausages. Will not be back there again. Totally overrated.

We saw Angelo's on a Diners, Dive-In and Dives episode. Since we were in Providence, we said why not. Plus, it was inexpensive. But that's where my excitement ends. (My partner LIKED it, too bad.) Only thing, we both agreed we ordered the wrong things for lunch (which was on the show.) At Angelo's, you get comp bread with butter and not oil (kidding me right?), CRAZY. Too bad, oil with grated cheese is better (new school). We tried green beans salad and the beef braciola. They are both off the Angelo's Classic Menu. STRINGBEAN SALAD $4.30 (1/5 me) (3/5 him) It was okay once you put on vinegar and oil on it with some grated parmesan. I WOULDN"T seek it out. He agreed to a certain extent. Plus, it was out of a can. NOT FRESH. BRACIOLA (BEEF) $10.95 (2/5 me) (4/5 him) He enjoys the simplicity of the food and pretty much enjoyed. Me, no. The red sauce seems out a can. NO HERBS, NO SALT OR PEPPER. (You gotta be kidding me.) Another thing, the KING beverage they served was more syrupy than carbonated. GROSS. The lemonade was TOO SWEET. Don't ask about refills, cuz didn't have one. No thanks on today, BUT there were a few glimpses of redemption passing while we dined. (Chicken Parm and Arugula salad with cannoli beans) We loved our server. (Chris was her name, possible short for Christine). Very efficient and attentive. WE WILL TRY AGAIN, but with new menu selections for each other. OVERALL, ME 2.5/5 STARS HIM 4/5 STARS

If you want quick, tasty Italian-American food in a place that gives a nod to its past, this is the place to go on the Hill. Family friendly, great staff, good prices.

Angelo's is dynamite, well priced and vegetarian friendly. Complimentary valet parking in the back, and the entire staff is very nice. Somebody made a ridiculous sh*tpost that the sauce is Hunt's. What a stupid, stupid claim. The sauce was obviously homemade. Very solid Italian restaurant.

    (5)
  • Nick B.

Was anticipating this place as old school Italian restaurants are rarer these days... Oh boy what crap food, portions were not that big. Everything was covered in HUNTS canned sauce... Food was reheated, bland, no pepper or olive oil.... Won't be going back, I hate giving such bad reviews but gotta tell it like it's.

I know Angelo's is an institution, an experience, a very specific appeal. But when you live in Providence and there are so many great Italian restaurants that are cooking old school gravy and cutting fresh pasta daily, there's just no reason to hit up Angelo's. Perhaps I'll be skewered for this review. Perhaps I ordered poorly. Perhaps the mediocre service is supposed to be part of the charm. My 'fresh' linguini was so water-logged that it ruined the Original House Sauce. I could barely get through the plate of it. While my friends genuinely seemed to enjoy their stuffed eggplant and chicken parm, I was just turned off. Also, the bread that comes to the table is barely a step up from Wonder, and you have to ask for butter -- and make sure you ask for REAL butter, otherwise they'll just bring you margarine. Both are in the little plastic packets. Some people love dive-y, diner-y, cheap food places. I am not one of them. And if you aren't either, then I strongly suggest you don't go to Angelo's. There are dozens of other spots where you can spend your hard-earned cash and have a satisfying experience.

My fiancé and I absolutely love this place and the funny thing is we've never actually eaten here, ha-ha!! In all honesty the fact that it's so easy to get takeout from here is what we love best about it. The chicken parm is one of the best you will find anywhere and when you get it to go you can be sure to have enough for more than just one meal.

Have been going there since 1979. The waitress we had tonight (tall stupid looking blond) was not interested in the least to serve us. The food portions were small and the quality was fair. After almost 40 years, by by

I'm beginning to think that any restaurant that's been featured on Guy Fieris "Triple D" is one to avoid. This will be the third one I've been to and am still looking for the restaurant that was featured on the show, and the third that has gotten a double thumbs down. Yes, Jay Leno dined here too....you'll see the photo on the monitor, but judging by the look on Jays face he wasn't impressed either. This is a Mom and Pop "we're cutting corners just to survive' type place. We both ordered chicken parmesan..... I ordered a Cabernet Sauvignon and was served Sauvignon Blanc.....OK fine. chalk it up to an inexperienced, young waitress. So we waited.....was hoping for maybe a basket of home made crusty italian bread with maybe some butter or herbed olive oil and balsamic but no go.....nothing but a shaker jar of Kraft parmesan cheese on the table to stare at. Ok...fine I guess the bread baker is off on Sunday. But what really drives me nuts is when an Italian restaurant just can't cook pasta. The penne was cooked about 4 minutes too long....it was soft, falling apart and borderline mush.... and I can forgive, if only my Co workers cavatappi wasn't cooked to mush as well. The chicken I didn't even taste because it was so paper-thin I thought it was just a disc of fried breading smothered in sauce. ok, so let's stab ourself in the other eye and splurge on dessert.....tapioca pudding. Yum! visions of my home made orange and cinnamon arborio rice pudding comes to mind so we both order that....what comes is a tiny ice cream scoop full of ....get ready, CANNED TAPIOCA PUDDING. Yea Guy......fabulous place ya found here....no wonder your restaurants get horrible reviews...... Won't be back anytime soon.

Actually, a 3.5. I had a very delightful (and filling) dinner when I was in Providence for a conference. Angelo's came with high recommendations from locals. I ate at the bar rather than taking a table in the main dining room. I had excellent service from everyone. Seemed to be a "locals" meeting place. I had the Jamie Special, which included Chicken Parmesan, Eggplant Parmesan, Fried Peppers over cavatelli? with a house sauce. All was very good. Came with a basket of bread and butter. Bread was really good, too! Not sure what their other selections are, but would expect they are as good. Seems to have a good local reputation.

So, after walking the entirety of downtown Providence (which didn't take long), my wife noticed a pine cone statue sort of thing. Her being Italian, she told me that this is the hallmark of an Italian neighborhood. Being around lunch, we decided to try it out. A short walk later, we decided to stop be Angelo's out of pure curiosity. The decor at Angelo's is pretty much exactly like every Italian restaurant that hasn't changed in 60 years. It's not a bad thing. It's a nice little mixture of nostalgia and comfort. As for the actual food, it was fairly underwhelming for me. My wife got an eggplant parmesan sandwich, which looks like the eggplant was recently reheated and put on a normal white roll. I ordered the cheese ravioli, which also looked to be prepackaged and reheated. It was all edible, albeit bland. It got the job done and the service was friendly, but I couldn't help be be a little disappointed in an Italian eatery with so much history to serve this up for lunch. 6/10

I may not be the best person to tell you about Angelo's because every time I go here I basically order the same thing. It's that kind of place. You come here because the food it consistent, it's not gourmet, but it's fabulously comforting and it fills that void. Friends of mine feel the same way, and one of them who has since moved away from RI still revisits Angelo's each time he's in town. It's that kind of place. You'd like to know what I get here every time? Well it's the chicken parm, although once I believe I tried the eggplant parm as well, which was also good. It's just so crispy and the sauce is tangy and the cheese is gooey, it's just exactly what I crave when I think "chicken parm." Even though my homemade version is great, there's something nice about coming here and having them make it their way. It just tastes right. Finally, the service isn't half bad either. Our waitress on our most recent visit was pretty hilarious. It's definitely a low-key spot, especially compared to other restaurants in the neighborhood, but that definitely helps it shine when you aren't looking to get gussied up and make reservations somewhere.

Chicken Parm. Needed a hacksaw to cut it. Probably frozen and semi heated before serving. Macaroni was medium warm. Bread and butter? Would not go back.

I stopped into Angelo's for dinner with some friends prior to a concert at Lupo's. To be honest, I was expecting more from such a long standing institution. Now don't misunderstand my rating, this is by no means a bad restaurant. The service was very good, all the members of the staff hospitable. However quality and quantity of the food itself was lacking. One item to try is the homemade pasta, it is properly prepared and quite tasty. One item to avoid would be the eggplant Parmesan. In both taste and texture it was altogether unsatisfactory. If you are thinking of going to Angelo's for lunch or dinner, do it. Some people love this place. I'm just not one of them.

Students rejoice - here's a place to go out to eat and NOT go broke! I love this place. A lot of times I just don't feel like cooking. As a poor student, that usually means Ramen. But every once in a while I just want to splurge and this is where I go. It's all old style and I like that. Reminds me of home and my Italian grandmother making me a big bowl of spaget.... yum!

As many here have already pointed out...Their Sauce is BLAND as can be! The meatball sub I had was tasteless. My friend had an Eggplant plate. We both looked at each from the first bite of our maeals & had the same opinion....Bland. By the looks of the kitchen staff....I don't think their forte is Italian food. Maybe south of the border cusine..... I won't be back!

I was all pumped up about coming to this place to eat after seeing the episode on Dinners, Drive-ins and Dives and was disappointed the moment I put the first bite in my mouth. Plain and simple, the food sucks and taste like it was out of a jar or better yet a can. The sauce from a Hunts can was better then the sauce on the Veal Parm..... The veal was tough, stringy and was breaded with the same stuff used on a burger chicken cutlet..... Service was slow and barely paid attention to us - and the place was empty. The waitress was nice - which was the only pleasant thing about coming here to eat. I will never be back and will never recommend this place to anyone

Tried to find a restauarnt open for Monday lunch on Federal Hill, Providence RI, choose the worst of the limited bunch ! I walked in and this place needs a make over in the worst way! History is lovely, but menu and decor dating from 1930's is not going to attract diners! Snail salad tempted me, I am a foodie and thought it would be interesting, too much citrus and over whelming flavors , the snail didn't shine through ( I didn't know that snails were the size of crayfish!!) The vegetable lasagne was very disappointing, seemed to me , it's not homemade Italian pasta, the vegetables were few and far between. Surprised that Diners, driven and dives would have good things to say! I would give it a pass!!

One of my all time favorite places to eat I love that it is kid friendly and fast the food is always consistent my kids love it here as well it is nice that you don't have to wait forever for your food which is hard to do with children I am always in and out within an hour love it

  • Robert S.

Their veal and peppers are legendary....moist, tender and flavorful. It comes with no sides, so you have to order pasta, potatoes, etc.... Their salad is not a good choice....a few lettuce leaves with 1-2 olives, 1-2 tomatoes....lots of water at the bottom of the bowl....go with the pasta or fries. Their veal parmigiana was out of this world...excellent dish..great tasting veal, not chewy at all, nice breading, great sauce...this is a winner !!!! Hostess and waitstaff are just OK, not great, but again, this is sort of a dinner, not the Mandarin Oriental ....

Angelos has been around so long, my parents went there years ago. You still order a la carte. That's the fun of the place, or it's the way to run up a pretty good bill. Last time I went I got a half chicken, which, by the way, looked a lot more like a Cornish game hen for eight bucks. I had a cup of escarole soup, which was escarole with chicken broth. We call Italian wedding soup "escarole soup" in my house and was expecting carrots, pastene, little meatballs... None of that, just escarole for three bucks. They also have pastene soup, which is also just pastene and stock. I had cavadi with pink sauce as a side for eight bucks and a six dollar glass of wine. Eight bucks for a SIDE of pasta. Mama Mia! Over 30 bucks with a tip, and the experience didn't move me. I've ordered eggplant parm and chicken parm, calamari, and the like. The portions are small, which I don't get for an Italian restaurant. The cutlets are a couple bites and I found them dry, like they were pre cooked and reheated. Yeah, it's on the hill. You're going to wait a long time and sit in a very crowded, noisy restaurant, but people love the stuff. It's not like mamma used to make. Not on my book anyway. I don't like it enough to wait in line for an hour, or to sit at a long community table with someone else's kids screaming in my ears and throwing food. Oh yes, been there. A The place has a famous name, so go check it out for yourselves. The last time I was there with my mom, we sat in the bar and there were a good twenty people standing between the tables. I got bumped no less than ten times, and a young guy in a polo shirt with his collar up dropped two F Bombs in a room full of women and children. The waitstaff and bartenders heard him and did nothing. I would have dragged him outside by his preppy collar and told him to stay out. Sit in the bar for convenience, but expect the rowdiness. There is valet parking in the back and Friday through Sunday, the place will be jammed.

Had the Cindy's Special, which was a fried chicken cutlet, topped with parmesan cheese and capicola ham, resting on a bed of penne pasta and marinara sauce. For dessert I had a mini cannoli. The cannoli shell was very hard. No complaints with the taste of the food, but the ratio of pasta to chicken was too heavily in favor of the chicken. Finding the entrance to this place was rather difficult. There are two doors on Atwell Street. One is exit only, the other is for take out. The actual entrance is around the corner on Bond Street. You enter and walk through the bar to get to the dining room.

Stopped in as the place looked great on D. D and D's ... A bit disappointed. We had chicken and eggplant parm. Whole ordering waitress tells us these dishes come with choice of pasta. Spaghetti ziti fettuccini or cavatti. What?? Cavatelli... No cavatti Hilarious. Sauce was very ordinary. Wasn't worth my effort to find it for our trip back home from Boston.

MY first time at this restaurant and I asked the waitress what was good. She offered me a chance to sample the veal with peppers and the eggplant parmigiana. The veal was very tender, but I really enjoyed the eggplant and ordered that. I was not disappointed. Thought the eggplant is battered it did not taste greasy or heavy themarinara sauce was perfect. The limoncello cake was also a nice light desert I would only say that I ordered a house salad and for 4.99 I thought the portion was a bit small.

Casual, classic good Italian food. I visited for lunch with a friend just the other day. We were on a budget for lunch but wanted Italian, voila Angelo's! After not feeling well for a couple of days I was so hungry. I just wanted veal parm/spaghetti. I was feeling much better and headed over to Angelo's Sunday night . It was about 8:20 when I arrived . Now I know that they close at 9:00 I was quick to order. Bacardi/diet coke. Chic escarole soup and veal parm xtra gravy spaghetti. I sat at the Bar. The Bartenders name was Pat. That's not because he told me. I over heard a co worker call to him. My Drink came with a lime that had been kicking around for some time . I'm not exaggerating . It was dried up like a prune. Pat came by with the Veal Parm and a 2 oz. plastic soufflé cup of sauce on the side. The Veal was burnt on the edges! Gravy was luke warm as was the pasta. Now the veal if cooked properly in a Sauté pan or deep fried would be then placed in a oven after sauced and cheesed. Not this one! Had to have gone in chef "mike" (microwave). Hard as a Rock!! Just awful!!!!.Pat never asked how my dish was. I really don't think he cared either .he was trying to clean up for the end of the night. I had put 3/4 of the veal that I had cut around on a B&B plate for someone to notice. It got tossed right into the bus bucket.I received my check, and had Pat take off the soup I never got. I would've told a manager, but I want the owners to know about this experience. Somebody worked so hard to build this landmark on Federal Hill. I was in my car by 8:50. If your idea was to move me along. You did !

How do you spell I-N-D-I-G-E-S-T-I-O-N? I never get it, but found out what it's like tonight after eating the bolognese at Angelo's. We stopped there on our way back to Boston on a recommendation from a local. Even if I didn't feel so uncomfortable, I would still give this restaurant one star. The sauce tasted like it was made with hamburger and a premade jar of tomato sauce. The sauce was very sweet and bland. The bread was tasteless, and the chianti wine was sour. I guess I shouldn't complain. Should I expect more from an $11.00 dish? Yes, when it's not even close to what I can cook myself at home.

I truly miss the old look of this restaurant. I know there are communal tables still in the place I think of as "some Italian grandmothers eat in kitchen". But I hate hate hate how the remodel makes you feel like you're eating in a TGIF. But the food is the food I grew up with. I love how french fries with meat balls is a legitimate meal. And eating the veal and peppers, while you sop it up with plenty of bread, is the best I've ever had

Is this a great place on Federal Hill to take a new date for a romantic dinner? No. Is this a great place for some great Italian food at very reasonable prices? Heck yes! I have been going here since I was a baby maybe that is why I love it so much. The eggplant parm and the veal and peepers are delicious. If you go hear and like veal you HAVE to try the dish (I'm not kidding)! I haven't been too impressed with the desserts here. But, honestly it doesn't bother me much since I am usually too full from the meal anyways. The Yelp summary says that this place does not accept credits card; last time I went they had begun accepting cards! Of course I'm sure they would much rather you pay cash. The free valet parking in the back of the restaurant is also very convenient for Federal Hill.

So my husband and I decided to cancel our fancy valentines dinner reservation because it snowed for the 50th time this winter ( I am beyond being over it). Stopped at Angelo's for take out dinner to enjoy at home. Yum. Started with my favorite pastene soup, so simple, so comforting and delicious. My husband had the lasagna and meatballs ( huge portion). I had 1/2 roasted chicken and fries. The chicken was moist and so flavorful. Best part is that Angelo's is giving patrons 20% off the bill for dine in or take out orders if it is snowing. Shows that they really appreciate our business. No wonder they have been around for 90 years. Great staple of Federal Hill.

Average food but consistent and priced well. Stopping in here for chicken parm and a bottle of wine for lunch is perfect.

Angelo's has been around since 1924. It serves very traditional Italian fare. There's nothing modernized about their entrees here. I could tell that it was "authentic" Italian because they had tripe on the menu, one of my Italian Grandma's favorite dishes and one that totally repulses me. The only thing missing from the menu was beef tongue -- the food that licks you back. To start, I ordered the house red wine, which was ridiculously priced at something low like $2 a glass. It actually tasted really good, too, and came in what looked like a juice glass. Wine = Italian juice! Growing up with Italian food, I usually like to try non-red sauce dishes when I dine out at Italian restaurants. So for my entree, I tried the Chicken Alfredo with Broccoli. It was good, and really covered/smothered in broccoli (my friends paid for it later). However, it was your basic chicken and broccoli alfredo; nothing special about it. Others at my table ordered red sauce items and they were literally smothered in tomato sauce. I tasted a little bit, and it was really good homemade sauce. Apparently it was so good that a woman at the table next to us ordered lasagna smothered in sauce with a side of spaghetti smothered in sauce. Talk about pasta overload. So...go for the cheap wine and basic Italian dishes with no flair. If you're looking for something fancy, Angelo's isn't the place. But they do good food.

If you're looking for fast, cheap but still delicious Italian food on Federal Hill, go to Angelo's. It's nothing fancy but the food is delicious, the price is right, and the service is super fast. Get the sausage and french fries, meatball and french fries, or the huge piece of lasagna.

It's like stepping back in time but I enjoyed eating here. Classic Italian fare that tastes pretty good. The food wasn't pricey considering the location is Federal hill. The waitress and the valet parking was excellent . The only thing I didn't like was the fact that they didn't have draft beer. Overall I liked it here.

Good for families. Food was not disappointing. Service was really good. THanks Tori!

If I could give zero stars, I would. The service was horrible. The hostess was rude and insulting. The food was mediocre at best and was served cold. Make sure you check your bill. They will over-charge you for items you didn't order or higher priced items. Angelo should be rolling in his grave. Guy, you missed the mark on this one. Diners, Drive-ins and Dives!

Good food. The meatballs were delicious. They fell apart in my mouth. I was confused when they came with french fries but they were good to. I ordered the chicken parm with the homeade fettuccine. The chicken was just as expected. The fettuccine was delicious. I really enjoyed the red sauce that they had over everything. Overall I left the place full and happy.

This has been my favorite restaurant since I could chew! Delicious, home style Italian food. Don't miss the broccoli, meatballs and fries, veal and peppers, or the Cindy special!! Never had a bad meal here. If you're in Providence, you HAVE to stop here for the real Federal Hill experience.

Very very basic menu but it is amazing! All homemade pasta and fresh food! I usually get meatballs and pasta or the eggplant, or the veal parm ha! Very authentic Italian plates! I like it all here and it is CHEAP! I shouldn't say that they may take a price increase! Excellent place!

Unlike most places on the hill, there is parking in back. Its valet, but tip the guy a dollar. And you don't have to get out in the middle of a busy street. The food is old school. And tasty. its classic. simple as that. Not fancy, but what your italian grandmother would make, just without the dirty dishes. i get the chicken parm, and have yet to be let down.

Been coming here since I was able to walk. Not much has changed and then again a lot has. Renovations have made the place much nicer looking and the new bar is the new bar. But back in the day this was the place where the waiters wore white aprons and they still do. They punched your bill on a ticket and you always paid cash. Back in the day when I ate everything under the sun this was my favorite place to go on Tuesday and Thursday;s because they served tripe. Not many people like it but I grew up eating and loved it. Still do but the cardiologist said no no. Anyway now I do the egg parm good and I get side orders of pasta and grean beans. The house wine is good but nothing memorable. But Angelo;s is memorable if you grew up on the hill.

Angelo's was always a staple restaurant as a child. While I don't go here often, I still recognize many of the dishes that I enjoyed growing up. Their snail salad, chicken parm and veal and peas have always been favorites. The restaurant has made some cosmetic improvements over the years so the ambiance is much more of a family restaurant than it was before. For restaurants on Federal Hill, I can say the food here is one of the most consistent and the prices are pretty average.

I would say this place is just average - not great, and not bad. I went with a group of 6 for lunch recently and I had the chicken parm and fries which was very good and filling. It wasn't superb by any means, though. However, others at my table were not that impressed with the portions, food quality for the price, and they had a variety of dishes, from the pasta to the pork chops to the tripe. The service was decent and friendly and food is ok.

Angelo's is a great place to get delicious classic Italian food fast and cheap. Servers are always friendly and service is always very prompt. If you are looking for a fancy federal hill meal this is not the place but if your a looking for great food at a good price it is. You cannot go wrong with the chicken parm with penne. Warning: Lunch portion might not fill you up, dinner portions are available all day.

This is simple Italian food done great!! I love the atmosphere, the staff we have been twice in the past three weeks and each time our waitresses were both great! We got to meet one of the owners and he was really down to earth . Another great thing they are doing is supporting the troops and they have something on each table. That made me love them more. So go and try them if you have not. We have had the tripe chicken parm stuffed shrimp meatballs and fries the veal and peppers and the homemade noodles !! A must to get the homemade noodles. I grew up with a gram that made pasta homemade and this reminded me of her!!!

If you're looking for something a bit more casual and on the hill then Angelo's is for you. If food is your main concern, you can certainly find better Italian a block away. The service was good, and I like the diner-esq ambiance but was less than impressed with my eggplant dish. It was my first, and likely last time at Angelo's, unless someone else is footing the bill of course.

I've been eating at Angelo's for a long time. Any Yelpers remember when it was one room and family style? The decor has changed and the prices have gone up, but still one of my favorites for basic Italian on the Hill.

Angelo's is what it is. Good cheap red sauce Italian food. Where else can you get dinner for 3 including 3 appetizers and a carafe of wine for under 100 bucks including the tip. Angelo's earns it's 4th star for what I consider the most tender, melt in your mouth veal I have ever had at an Italian restaurant. Apps- meatballs and fries ( I have had better meatballs ) just ok. Braciola was tasty and fork tender but lacked stuffing. Homemade cavati pasta was solid Entrees - veal and peppers was best I ever had! Had a special veal and eggplant with sweet peppers over homemade fettuccine also excellent. Lastly cavati pasta with diced eggplant tossed in a vodka sauce which was also wonderful. We had one carafe of cheap jug wine which gets the job done. When in Rome ..... I would highly recommend Angelo's.

Great friendly people. We were looking for food on a raining day and some restaurants didn't take us because we were soaking wet from the rain. A gentlemen from Angelo's welcomed us to come in. We said let's try it and we were glad that we did. The staffs were so friendly and warm. We ordered veal & pepper, chicken Broccoli alfreddo and we decided to get braciola because it was featured on the food network "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives". I would say that I felt in love with their veal and pepper dish. You must get if you never been there. It was tender and very well seasoned. I would go again and try the other dishes.

Fantastic home cooked Italian food! The homemade pasta, chicken parm, antipasto, soups, calamari, are all excellent. BUT, I could never go to Angelo's without ordering the veal and peppers, absolutely the best I've ever had (and I'm Italian). The prices are so reasonable, actually cheap, for the huge and delicious portions that come to the table. With many items on the menu, 1/2 orders are also available, which are big also! The staff is wonderful, it is a wonderful place to bring the family, great food, and great prices. Mangia!!!!!

Andrea the waitress behind the bar is terrible. We got there 20 minutes before closing time and she was so frustrated and miserable to have serve us I'll probably give this place a break for a few months.. I've been coming here for almost 20 years, it's a place I usually come with my father. The food is great and the service is usually great but I have to take a star away for Andrea...

It was lunch so I had to hold back or I'd be asleep for the afternoon! I went with the spinach salad (dried cranberries, walnuts, vinagrette) and needed something small. I picked (2 large) meat balls and fries. Others had the cold italian sub. Old school, simple, no nonsense good food.

I took my mom and sister to lunch here. My mom works in the area, and all of her office mates rave about this place. With its rich Italian history, Providence has dozens of restaurants serving food quite similar to Angelo's, so for this place to be regarded above competing establishments made me look forward to visiting. Parking was atrocious, but the rear lot of the building had a valet attendant who was able to take care of my car. We arrived at about 12:30, and the dining area was already filled. The interior looked like many other Italian restaurants, wood-finished walls with garish photos hung everywhere. The maitre d' asked if we would like to have lunch in the lounge instead. I walked over and saw a large bar in an area that seemed cleaner than the main section, so I didn't mind. The waitress was very attentive at first, but that wasn't going to last as the lounge filled up. The menu was limited and didn't include descriptions for the Italian-impaired. I ordered the baked pork special with cavatelli pasta. My mom ordered a meatball with fries, and my sister had the Emilio's Special, penne pasta with broccoli and olives. The food arrived quickly, and my mom was content with her lunch. Mine on the other hand wasn't very good. The pork was both tough and dry, and it was difficult to chew. My pasta was overcooked, too mushy, and the sauce was flavorless. My sister disliked her dish, saying it was too bland, so she ordered a meatball a la carte to spice it up. It took a long time to get the waitress' attention at this point. Unfortunately, her meatball was hard and lacked any taste. By the time we were done, the bar was filled with local regulars, and they were quite boisterous. Their vernacular, shouted at an ever-increasing volume, reminded me of colorful dialogue from a typical Sopranos episode. I winced every time my mom heard an F-bomb. Ultimately, I was not impressed with Angelo's. With so many other fine establishments within walking distance, this place needs to raise the level of their game. Considering this was a lunch, prices are not inexpensive, as some of these other reviews suggest.

Disappointed. Meatballs bland. Service was awful. Server never checked on us until we were done and no where to be found when time to pay the bill. Will never go back.

Have always passed Angelo's when I go into Federal Hill. Why? I don't know just did. Then one night I saw Diners, Dives, and Drive In's with Guy Fieri and they featured Angelo's. Well after watching I was sold. Family and I went tonight. Nice casual dining on the HILL. Grabbed a booth and was help right away by a friendly waitress. I all ready knew what I wanted going in, the BRACIOLA, It's slow cooked beef served over HOME MADE PASTA and topped with GRAVY. Sauce for you NON ITALIANS. Wife got Chicken Palm kids got Meatballs w/fries and chicken tenders. Everything came quick and EVERYTHING I mean EVERYTHING was perfect. The Braciola was just like my Nana used to make and it took me back 20 years. Thank you thank you. The GRAVY is very plain, that is the way I like it, that is the way I grew up. Tried all of the other meal and they were so good. My daughter loved the idea of Meatball and Fries. The Chicken Palm was fresh not frozen and the prices were very reasonable bill was under $45 for four people... I am a FAN now, and I will no longer pass you by Angelo's. I am sorry. I will be returning soon.

Have been going here for many years but this will certainly be my last. The owner should be embarrassed by the SWILL they serve. We started with the pastine soup. I didn't know "pastine" means incredibly salty broth in italian. There was literally a thimble full of pasta in the soup. The broth was as salty as sea water if not more. After that disaster, I moved onto the chicken parm. This place used to have the best chicken parm around. Not any more. The chicken parm was about a millimeter thick (no word of a lie). It was all breading & sauce. The chicken had to be about 3 days out as well. Thin & tough. This is typical as this restaurant serves nothing made to order. Everything is made long before you order it then reheated. Look elsewhere if you want something better then reheated leftovers.

Headed to Federal Hill for dinner on two different recommendations. Hadn't picked out a particular restaurant so went here based on our cab drivers (he deserves his own yelp review) recommendation. Turns out his nephews girlfriend works there but place was still excellent. It's a good thing we didn't know it had been on a Guy Fieri (I don't care I can't spell that, don't really care for his shows) show or we would have missed out. Staff was very friendly, the place is obviously well run, and the food was terrific. Side salad is nothing more than some lettuce and a black olive, which we kept trying to pawn off on each other, but some pepper and cheese and it was edible. I had the veal and peppers, one of the only gf options on the menu, and it was so so good. Ned was torn between the baked ziti and veal parm so the waitress said get the veal since it comes with pasta and she'd melt some cheese on top and basically mimic the ziti. So nice! It was a great place with a down home atmosphere.

Well to be honest here on this review I am up in the air between "A-OK" and "eh I have had better" Like my profile says I am the internal man of mystery. I have traveled the world and I have been to Italy 2 times so if I was going to compare the restaurant to what I have had in Italy yes I have had better. For an American style Italian restaurant it was ok. One thing that was confusing was the parking they have a small lot behind the restaurant with a parking attendant you give your keys too. Don't park in the lot next to the building on either side. Once we got inside it was like around 1 pm and it wasn't busy so the establishment was pretty clean. Now here is what gets me, the restaurant was on Diner's Drivens, and Dive's. For anyone that has seen this show knows that Guy really talks up how great everything is. Now here is where it was really interesting. They weren't very busy but no one acknowledge us for about 15 mins. The older lady that did seat was very nice and interacted with my girlfriends son. After we were seated our waitress was Lori. She seemed very bothered to be our server. We all had questions and excited to know about how the show was done and what Guy ate and made even though we saw the show. She was not very interested in answering the questions so. We told her we needed a few more mins. She came back like 10 mins later and we all ordered the meatball sandwiches, and 2 orders of fries. The sandwiches were tasty and the fries were a little cold, but I didn't want to complain because the service was already slow enough. The bill came it was fair price for 3 sandwiches 2 orders of fries, a coke, ice tea and 2 water it came out to $33.40 for the horrible service that Lori provided I gave her $3.60 for a tip, just a little above 10% I use to be a server so I think what I gave her was fair, for fair service. The we in my group was My brother girlfriend and her son.

Great food, great service! If your a son you will understand this. You go to your moms house to fix something and she asks you when your done are you hungry. Then you get a great meal all to yourself at the dinner table. That is the experience at Angelo's!

Wow so disappointed ! Me and my fiance came here especially after seeing the restaurant on DDD and also on the Phantom Gourmet. First of the decor was dreadful but that didn't bother us as we were sure to be in for a treat with the food. No such luck! We ordered the meatballs which came recommended , and were left more than underwhelmed, so bland! The chicken parmigiana was the same , super ordinary, the sauce was watery and tasteless. The only decent thing was the Pinot Grigio!

One of my favorite places on Federal Hill. Low Key good food for the price. Everyone I know that goes there has a favorite dish. Mine is the veal and peppers, you can get half orders which are nice. Today I had Lasagna which was also very good. If you haven't been there give it a try.

    (5)
  • Joni B.

The eggplant parmagiana is prepared in an unusual way (egg batter, versus traditional breadcrumbs) and it's outrageously good. You can get homemade pasta that takes 2 minutes to cook, so you know it's authentic and fresh. The simplicity of the food stands on its own...it's is a refreshing change from the overstyled and overpriced Italian joints dotting Federal Hill.

Jenn C's review below hits the nail on the head. Angelo's did change and went a little upscale in the past decade by expanding their dining room and adding a very nice bar area, but it's still by far the best value on the Hill, and the food is terrific! This restaurant makes this native Rhode Islander quite proud. My first time at Angelo's was Summer 1987 when I was stationed at the Newport Navy Base. My date was a woman Marine who hailed from Long Island and of Italian heritage. I wanted to impress her with my knowledge of Italian cuisine and Federal Hill as a whole even though I had no clue about either. Anyway, once you drive up Atwells Avenue from 95, Angelo's is the first restaurant on your right, and I told her "that's the place" not really knowing if it was or not. The maitre'd seated us at a long table with chairs sitting next to people we didn't know. "Oh boy, I'm in for it!" I thought to myself. Well, I needn't have worried as the food came as did the wine and my date exclaimed "Neil, I just love this place! It's like being with family!" Whew, what a relief, and thank you Angelo's!

Came here for a staff event. A merry meal, but never will I return for the food. I ordered the grilled vegetable lasagna, and my tablemates ordered Eggplant Parmesan, veal cutlets, etc; everyone's order was surrounded in a basin of flat, one-dimensional, salty red sauce. The texture of my lasagna was fine. The restaurant seems to make a big deal about their eggplant Parmesan not being deep-fried, but I think we all realized that it was pan-fried, which, really, isn't a humongous difference. The waitress was a consummate professional, memorizing our 10 orders, customizations and all; we saw her repeat this at the table next to us. This was pretty cool.

I have lunch at the Resturant as often as I can with friends and the service and food are always great. I also am a huge fan of the staff and owner. A great place to check out the locals and to be seen. You never know who will walk in the door.

Went here because Guy Fieri from Food Network recommended it. I also thought being it was in Federal Hill area of Providence which is their Little Italy it would just as good as New York's Little Italy. Service was good and waitress was trying to be helpful in recommendations. Food was okay, I wouldn't say as good as Italian restaurants in the tri state area but decent. Selection was good, however. Sauce on my chicken parm was just okay, nothing special and not much mozzarella. Place was busy for Saturday night, don't know if these were tourists or regulars. I think Guy Fieri may be losing his touch a little bit. Next time, I will try another place in area for comparison.

By far the best bang for your buck. Wow, great ingredients equal quality. Where else can you get tripe anymore. Some people just don't get it. It is traditional with quality. Old school. I remember the old look inside but it looks good now. I LOVE the veal. My three year old eats the veal, meatballs, sausage, and actually tried the tripe. She didn't think it was the greatest. I love the gravy and it is always consistent. It's a nice Italian atmosphere and makes me feel at home. This isn't a fancy foo foo Italian restaurant where you get a strand of pasta over an olive with olive oil a sardine and a piece of carrot. It's the real deal.

Angelo's is a solid 3 stars (3.5 if they allowed it) . I've never had a bad meal here but at the same time it's nothing spectacular. The food is inexpensive and comes out quick. It's great if you're in a hurry. Not so great if you want to have a drink and relax before eating. You could realistically order your drink and food and be done in 30 minutes. Good place for kids since it's quick and inexpensive. Staff is very friendly and they have valet parking.

There's many restaurants in Federal Hill, and we had heard this was one of the better ones, so we tried it out. We also heard there was a hit here once, and no one saw anything! (probably because the food was so good everyones heads were down). Very simple menu, typical paesano fare, very low prices and good quality food. I had the veal and some pasta, couldn't complain about either. Added a nice bottle of wine, and bada bing bada boom, you've got a great dinner for less than $50. I'd certainly go back, I even made some friends! (well, friends were made).

    (4)

Reasonably priced and consistently good. I'm a huge fan of their meatballs and french fries (it sounds weird as a side dish to pasta but it works). They're good for both dining in and takeout.

  • Edward B.

Overall it was a pleasant experience that could of been better. I would still return but not as a regular customer. There are a lot of options on Federal Hill for Italian Food making it tough for a restaurant to stand out. I enjoyed that they had complimentary parking behind their building and the history of the space and also how clean the space was. The decor reminds us of the history of Rhode Island and was really cool! When I was looking at the lunch pricing I could not believe how cheap it was! Chicken Parm and Penne for $8? Spaghetti and Meatballs also for under $10! The portions are small but it was still a good deal for the price. My guest and I asked the server for a cup of soup and she forgot we never received the soup throughout the meal and she only approached us to deliver our other food never really checking up on us. The calamari was overcooked but decent and the entrees were both delicious with a great sauce! Cheers.

First, this restaurant is better than the Old Canteen nearby. Sure the food isn't as fancy but they're good at the core items and that's better than a big average menu.

I have been going to RI for years, and always wanted to eat on Federal Hill. Never knew where, but during the summer we were in a store on Federal Hill and met Guy Fieri in a store. He asked the owners where he should eat, and they said for old style Italian, go to Angelos. Well that was good enough for us, so we decided to take the plunge. This was just not good at all, and if this is the best on the hill, that is scary. Very limited menu. The antipasto was very small, with very little meat on it. The garlic bread was like 6 slices. Not many sides to choose from. The veal dish was OK, and the sauce was tasty. My son got the lobster tail for dessert, and that was just bad. Seemed to be frozen then thawed, you could barely cut the pastry. The only saving grace, it is dirt cheap. The bottle of wine we got for $16 I know I pay $14 for in the store. Each dish was under $15. If you are looking for cheap, this is the place. If you are looking for good, this is not.

I read all the reviews and have to say its not what I expereinced. I live in NH and dating someone that has lived in RI all her life till she moved to MA. One night we were thinking of an Italian place to go eat. I said to her" I just want to find an Italian restaraunt that can make the best spaghetti and meatballs to die for". She recommended Angelos. We drove this past Saturday for over an hour to dine at Angelos. She ordered the chicken parm which was amazing. I ordered of course the spaghetti and meatballs with sausage. PLEASE! PLEASE if you are the owner or chef reading this, taste your meatballs and sausage. If it wasnt for the sauce this would of been even worse. The meatballs had no taste and as for the sausage you need to go to fenway to see what a sausage is. Both tasted frozen and no flavor. It was my first time to federal hill and my last time to Angelos. There are so many other restaraunts that may have better meatballs/sausage than yours. With all that competition I hope you take my review to heart. This is the first time in my life I have ever written a review for anything. The drive to your restaraunt was worth writing this... BTW. Being an owner of a seafood market in NH you should look at the customer service in your restaraunt. I would of fired 2 people that night. Yours Truly Very unhappy elvis.graceland@yahoo.com

Went there about a week ago. Walked in not knowing what I felt like eating. Just had a hunch about the veal and pepper sandwich. It slaughtered me, (sorry). Chunks of veal that needed one or two chews. Peppers also delicious and slightly topped with a nice red sauce. OMG. I will make the trip just for that sandwich soon.

Love the place. Don't miss the eggplant parmesan and the spaghetti aglio e olio with olives. We're also fans of the desserts, specifially the spumone (the real thing with claret sauce) and the sfogliatelle ("lobster tail" pastries stuffed with a thick egg custard subtly flavored with almond and lemon). All this plus a choo choo train going around the ceiling. What more could you ask for?

The prices tempt one to rate this place a bit too highly. Dinner for three with six drinks and dessert came to about $67. A nice atmosphere and a server who worked hard. The antipasto I'd probably skip if I did it again. The pearl onions were almost offensively sweet. Too much pickled and preserved vegetables in general. It is hard, as I noted, to complain over a $9 dish. A satisfactory compromise would have been 1/2 the size at the same price with better ingredients. I was more satisfied with the homemade pasta, as well as the desserts. The apple dumpling was good, and the cannoli was very, very good. Narragansett in tallboy cans completed this evening nicely!

Angelo's you lose a star because you changed! Damn it, don't you realize this is Rhode Island, the state where no one ever leaves or just when you think you're out, they pull you back in? I miss the old cafeteria style of this place. Its too glossy now. Give me 50's pea soup puke green anyday. But still, this is my favorite, favorite Italian resaurant in RI. Whenever I come home I must make pilgrimage. The best homemade macaroni and meatballs ever. And it used to be super cheap but now everything on the menu is just a bit more expensive because apparently someone has to pay for those big ugly booths :-( No matter though, I will always return. I dream of you in my sleep. Keep it real, Angelo's.

  • Sugar G.

Damn, where the locals at in reviewing this restaurant? Angelo's is a classic RI joint. It was renovated a few years back to give it a warmer feel. The former look was great: waitstaff wearing white w/ aprons, old style wooden chairs, menu on a board in middle of room, sharing tables with strangers, loud booming conversations. Today, there's a carpeted room in the back, cozy booths, cushioned seats. Heck, I still love it. For years, it was not open on Sundays which was so disappointing, but alas now it is. The main room still has the menu in the middle of the room (on four sides of a brick pillar). The food is still great: classic Italian goodness. Nothing fancy. It's a great option for those of us who have an Italian grandmother who "thinks" she can cook pasta and make sauce, but really can't. So I go here to capture what I think my grandmother should be making. Sorry, nonna. Everyone gets a basket of crusty Italian bread with butter. My favorite dish is the meat ravioli. Not many places offer it so I always order it here. Ask for the chocolate pudding for dessert. The presentation is just right: a big scoop in the middle of a small metal dessert dish with a dollop of whipped cream. YUM. The homemade pasta dish is always a delight. There are a few different soup offerings. Noodle soup is red during the week, classic on the weekends. Sometimes they run out of things like chicken or a daily special. So, get there early. I like the addition of valet parking at Angelo's. They have a private lot in the back. The attendant is usually pretty alert. Always tip him/her. S/he'll remember.

Solid basic Italian food, you will not see anything fancy on the menu, nor would you want to. Their gravy is excellent, as well as most of their dishes like Chicken Parm, meatballs and fries, raviolis, and Lasagna. The prices used to be real cheap, but have crept up over the years, still a good deal though. They put in a nice Bar area when they remodeled a few years ago. Whiskey pour is just OK.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
