This place is just NOT GOOD, we stopped by because we wanted to have some good Mexican breakfast but first of all the neither the cooks nor the servers are Mexican, My friend asked for a coffee and the mean looking waitress said "I don't have any but I can make some" WTF?, then asked for a sprite and she brings me one which is flat, when I told her about it she just turns around and brings me a bottled sprite, not even taking away the one I didn't like. We order carne asada burritos and so far it was the worst plate I have ever seen and tasted in my entired life!! I'm not joking. DONT COME HERE! save yourself some money and a trip to the hospital.

This is a solidly good American Mexican restaurant. Bar is great. Lots of regular local patrons eating & drinking at the bar. Chips & Salsa server immediately! Service is prompt, and super friendly! I had the MEXICAN COMBO PLATTER: Pork tamale Chicken enchilada Chile Relleno It was a generous portion. It came with refried beans & Mexican rice, side of salsa & sour cream. I really enjoyed it. It wasn't fancy schmancy but a good solid American Mexican combo platter. No canned meat! Interior is *clean* & has great kitschy Mexican memorabilia! It had a very casual relaxed friendly atmosphere. The Margaritas were well made & tasty! I will definitely be patronizing this place when I am in Middletown area.

This place came highly recommended when I had to travel to Newport for some business. They are tucked neatly in on the Main Rd and parking is somewhat limited on their left side. I ordered the Baja Fish Taco platter and they were superb. Perfectly cooked fish over a bed of slaw with a nice pico de gallo. Came with some double fried crispy fries and I washed it down with one of their signature Root beers. The best part though was their salsa. Made home made along with their chips I made sure I took some to go because they were that GOOD. You could taste the herbs and how fresh the vegetables used were in the salsa. It had the perfect balance between heat and acid to counteract the saltiness of your typical salsa. I would definitely come back again for lunch next time I am in the Newport area.

Used to come often when I lived in the area. Excited to be back after nearly 10 years. The food - especially the salsa is as good as I remember. Friendly service and fresh ingredients. Every Mexican restaurant is different. Titos certainly has its own interpretation. Their food is different from all the other Mexican restaurants we go to - which is one of the reasons why we love it.

First off, I'm not actually from this area. I dined at Tito's when I was visiting my sister who works nearby. With that said, I'm not sure what other Mexican establishments Tito's is competing with. Overall, I thought the food was fine, but I had a couple issues. To me, the salsa had an odd taste to it, like something was just off. I can't really put my finger on it, but it's probably my least favorite Mexican restaurant salsa. I also thought it was kind of a ripoff that they charge you extra money if you want to have more than one type of sauce on your enchilada order (like having one red and one green instead of both the same color). I've had other restaurants give me whatever combo of sauces I want at the same price, and they are using the same amount of sauce, so why upcharge for variety? It just doesn't seem right. I prefer some of the Mexican restaurants in Providence, but that's a whole different neighborhood, so perhaps Tito's is as good as it gets in this 'hood. In any case, I think it's simply mediocre.

Always a great place to stop when on the island. There is such a nice variety of margaritas to choose. My favorite is the skinny with fresh lime juice. The fresh chips and salsa are terrific, but ask for a side of chipotle sauce for dipping. Such a great addition for dipping. The empanadas are fresh and plenty for two.

Over priced and not worth the trip, if you've had good Mexican food this place will let you down. Everything taste bland from the rice to the burritos. But they do have something's going for them like they're margaritas $12 but worth is they pack a punch and they're fries (yes they serve fries lol) are the best. If anything I'd come back just for those two.

More hit than miss, usually good overall, we eat at Tito's fairly regularly. Food quality is consistently good, portion sizes substantial and price point is reasonable. I usually get cheese enchiladas. Always a good call.

The absolute worst Mexican food I have ever had in MY LIFE!! I've had bad in other places but I can't begin the disgust of the food. PLEASE GO TO Taco Bell or get a Mexican edition hungry man frozen dinner! I had a shredded beef burrito with refried beans and rice. The rice was a covered in a cold tomato paste and crunchy. The meat (if you want to call it that) tasted like old microwaved smoked brisket. I guess in Rhode Island this must seem authentic. Wow maybe I should open a cheap taqueria and charge what they charge!

I literally made a Yelp account solely to review this dump. First impression was a weird smell that hit me in the face the second I walked in. Also noticed that the "breakfast burrito" menu mispelled chorizo and that should have clued me in to the fact that this place knows nothing about Mexican food or food at all, period. Further adding to my skepticism at this place was when our waitress informed me that the southwest mexi wraps we wanted to order came frozen, and therefore couldn't be made vegetarian. First up were the nachos, which are essentially the bagged and shredded cheddar cheese you can find in any supermarket over some runny beans and two olives (I counted) with a topping of some sad, old looking tomatoes (more yellow than orange or red!). Add this to the fact that the beans and cheese simply sat on top of a pile of tortilla chips aaaand...nope. We got two vegetarian combos, one with a side salad and the other with a side of Mexi rice. Rice was about 2 spoonfuls and extremely mushy and flavorless. I managed to eat my refried bean taco, but the shell tasted like supermarket brand premade shells, and the lettuce looked like the gross stuff that comes out of bags at Subway and sits there all day. Beans continued to be runny. I can't review the burrito because neither of us even touched it. We got our check and got out of there as soon as we could. At $38 for two meals and an appetizer, I expected much, much more. If I could give this rancid cesspool zero stars, I would! If you want authentic Mexican food for cheaper than this place, try El Perrito in Newport!

I thought the burritos would taste much better. My friend and I were not very impressed with the service. Our waitress forgot to bring us part of the order and forgot to bring our sauce to the table. Sorry but we would of been better off eating at the Taco Bell next door. Such a shame for an adorable restaurant. It seems they need more people at the front of the house for dinner time.

I visited here once over a year ago and never returned. I remember that the booths were really cramped, service was slow, and food was on par with Taco Bell.

Just had a burrito and must confess that I had very high hopes for it. The staff were very friendly and the vibe in the place is great. Unfortunately, the burrito was very underwhelming. Being from SOCAL and having spent some time traveling in Mexico, there are things to expect from this common street food. They miss the mark on a filling burrito and over stuff with fried onions... Not something that usually appears in the Mexican ones. The 'Carne Asada' was not that. It was sliced steak. It was more a fajita than a burrito. I like local establishments so I'll probably be back to try a margherita but unlikely that I'll eat more.

Just finished dinner at the bar. Crunchy tacos and a mango margarita. Super tasty, super hot and fresh. I have had a taco that hot (temperature) before. Their salsa is to die for. Could have made a meal out salsa as chips alone. I also had a mango margarita. Kaitlin made it perfectly. I've been coming to Tito's for over 20 years. I have never been disappointed! And I will come back again and again and again!!

Very good Mexican restaurant. Margaritas are on point, you have to try one. The place is small and the decor is a little out dated, but the food will make you not worry about that. I'm not huge Mexican fan but I enjoy myself when I visit titos.

  • Matt P.

The wife and I should have just turned around when we walked in and I commented that the place smelled like old lady panties. This is not what you want your dinner venue to remind you of. Not that I have anything against old ladies and their undergarments...because to tell you the truth, I don't want to eat anywhere that smells like underwear from any age group or gender...But I digress. This place used to be good. Now it is bad. My burrito was overpriced and gave me instant indigestion. Wife had heartburn before leaving the front door. The food was old and just plain bad. Oh, our waitress was also unpleasant. Maybe she was angry because the kitchen had taken her panties. Tito, it's time to let it go.

Chips: straight out of an over salty bag. fajitas: chicken had no seasoning or flavor and steak well it wasn't carne asada, more like boiled roast beef. Applebee's fajitas are better...enough said! Oh and we waited to write this review so we would be more easy on them but we both had a horrendous case of "montezuma" as well. I avoid even making eye contact as I drive by this place so I don't catch something.

I went in for some margarita's and boy were they good!! I didn't get any food but had the chips and salsa. Those were very good too. I'll be back

Gross and over priced. Poor service, had to get our own silverware, had to ask 3x for water. Chip are warmed up store bought chips, salsa seemed to be from a jar and not fresh.

I don't know if there was some kind of management turnover but I walked away disappointed. I found the place dirty. The table next to us had a beverage spilled on the floor. The staff only put some stinky old dish rags on the spill and left it on the floor until the guests departed. The spill wasn't cleaned for another 15 minutes after they departed. On top of it all, the wall decor was dusty as were the lights. I ordered the Carne Assada Burrito a Mexican restaurant staple. How can someone mess that up? It left a lot to be desired. The meat was not chopped up to manageable sizes leaving huge chunks of meat that destroyed the entire burrito and then smothered in so much sour cream that the burrito turned to mush. The staff never asked why more than half the burrito was left on the plate. I used to love this place. I would be hard pressed to go back.

Worst food. Worst service. I wish I wasn't hungry when I drove by and remembered it was a dump the first time I went and its still a total bummer I did not want to put star because it sucked

Really really bad food. The most bizarre idea of an enchilada I've ever been offered. The beans had no flavor. The rice was over heated. Queso dip was shredded cheddar cheese melted with I'm not sure what else. Waitress was so nice. Service was fabulous. Great atmosphere for kids. Cocktails were great. I'd visit for drinks and chips, not for food.

I had joined the "email club" and received a birthday email with a coupon for "buy one meal, get one free", so we decided that was what we would do for my birthday dinner. When we walked up to the door, we noticed it was wide open....this "restaurant" is on a busy main road with traffic flying by, so that was kind of discerning. A strange smell greeted us once we were inside the building..kind of a cross between cleaning solution, dirty laundry, and sour milk. That should have been the second tip off to run for our lives! Thinking that perhaps they had just cleaned something before we arrived, we decided to stay. We saw the sign that asked you to wait to be seated and after about a minute, a member of the waitstaff walked part way towards us and told us we could sit anywhere. We found a booth away from the open door and looked at the menus that were already on the table. After about 5 minutes, we decided what we wanted and closed the menus, putting them at the end of the table...a usual sign that you are ready to order. All of the waitstaff were gathered in the bar area, talking with each other and doing their best to avoid eye contact with patrons. I should mention that it was a warm evening and it is possible that there were other patrons on the Patio, but we only noticed one other table with patrons in our area. 10 minutes after we had looked at the menu, we still had not been approached by anyone. Every time we thought a waitperson was leaving the bar area to come our way, they detoured towards either the kitchen or the restroom. 20 minutes after arriving, with still no service and the only visit to our table was made by the flies that must have come in through the open front door, we got up and walked out. Were it possible to give a - star rating, I would. There is another Tito's in Seekonk, but after this experience, we were afraid to go there..perhaps we experienced the best they have to offer.

I was craving Mexican so bad and my friend suggested this place. I knew it wasn't going to be authentic but I was hoping it would have hit the spot. Boy was I wrong. The place smelled funky when we walked in there. Long story short, service was ok but I honestly wished I had Taco Bell next door.

This place is god awful. It looks like they took a Taco Bell from the 90's and made it less classy. The kitchen screwed up my order and didn't offer anything while I waited for them to remake it. The staff in general looked like they were attending an 8am class at college with yoga pants and dirty t shirts. They like to play the blame game and not take responsibility for delivering an order that was clearly wrong. The food was WAY over priced. There is a Taco Bell next door that I know serves higher quality product and I could have eaten like a king for what I paid for two small enchiladas. Normally the chips and salsa can save a restaurant for me but they were clearly a generic manufacturer with their name slapped on the bottle and bag. Ugh. Lets talk a little about the clientele, first there were screaming babies, totally fine, its a family restaurant, now how about an 11 year old yelling, making loud farting noises, and then saying "Mommy I farted! I love you!." At minimum you speak with the customer and asked them to control their child, at my establishment you eject them like any unruly drunk would be. They promote themselves "Since 1989" where it should be "Stuck in 1989." Eat at the diner next door or the Taco Bell.

Titos is what it is, nothing over the top but easy low key, inexpensive Mexican food. I can usually deal with not the best service but to watch your bartender and other servers just sit almost behind you and play on their phones while you could use a water or condiment is a little much. They would wait on you for a second and then disappear until you stare them down to move. We were even seated at the bar! Either way, some servers are obviously better than others but tonight's staff was not the "A team"

"Unappetizing." That was my fellow diners' impression of Tito's Cantina. That is why I am giving two stars. My words of caution here: order carefully and wisely. This was the tale of different experiences. If I was basing this review solely on my experience, I would give it three stars. I ordered the chicken and black bean quesadilla with a side of guacamole, and I may have gotten a little too excited when I saw Bacardi Oakheart behind the bar and immediately ordered it with Coke. My drink was strong and my food was good; however, I have had much better guacamole, and it is pretty difficult to mess up a quesadilla. The service would have prevented me from going four stars. We shadowed the doorway for a good five minutes without a hostess coming over to greet and seat us -- despite the "Please wait to be seated" sign. I noticed four stools at the bar, so we seated ourselves there. Every milestone of the meal after that was painfully slow, especially for the bar. And, there was a bit of confusion with the bill at the end of the meal when the waitress couldn't figure out how to split it between cash and a credit card. This seems like a great spot for a couple of drinks, but, again, be careful what you order off the menu. It will make or break your experience.

Truly, why is it not possible to give a place zero stars? After leaving Big Dawgs II because they told us the kitchen closed at 4 pm (what??), we decided to mosey down to Tito's because I love Mexican food, even though I realize this will not be real Mexican food. We decided to sit at the bar because that's the kind of mood we were in: a little sassy and two beers deep. It took a very long time for us to get the bartender's attention to order a drink, though he seemed to make a very good show of running around like he had a lot to do. Neither of us could figure out what things he was actually accomplishing during all this rushing about. I will say that once they were ordered, they came quickly enough. Fast forward another 20 minutes with the menus in front of us and we finally flag him down to ask if we can put in a food order. We got chili con queso which came out quickly and was fine. Nothing to be excited for. We struck up a conversation with the gentleman next to us who happened to be in the Navy. As a former servicewoman, and with El Husband-o currently active, these conversations, especially after a few beers, tend to get very animated and F-bombs get dropped. Guess what? WE ARE IN A BAR. That happens. Before we could even order entrees, we were told that we were rudely told that "this is a family restaurant and you need to stop swearing". Now, there are nice ways to say this. For example: "I hate to bother you, and I understand you're here to have a good time, but there is a family seated behind you and could you clean up the language a little?" SURE BUD! No prob. But if you're going to be a jerk, we're going to leave. So we did. And we definitely won't be back.

There is a full menu of authentic Mexican food from a la cart to large plates. The service is good and the wait is reasonably short.

Average Mexican chain type place. Prices were reasonable, service was friendly but not above average. I had a pork taco that was great but the chicken taco was a little bland; my Uncle enjoyed the fish taco platter which did look good. Chips tastes like cold, out of the bag chips, but salsa wasn't bad.

  • Jon S.

TIto's is solid mexican with a bit of a Newport price. With a takeout order, we tried a pork burrito (comes with lettuce, tomoto, sauce), chicken burrito (no sauce) and nachos. The main dishes were the best, but some of the accessorizing sauces did well. Particularly like the salsa. If anything else, go to Tito's for chips & salsa in the restaurant (nice decor, btw). Why does mexican have to be pricey? Yo no comprehendo. It's like rice, beans and flour tortillas, right? Must be the secret sauce, jaja. 2 locations for these folks, in Middletown, RI and Fall River, MA.

The wait staff are amazing. They are super friendly and full of recommendations. The redfish burrito is absolutely delicious and if you ever need a good pick me up the corona-rita is a great way to go. And with tons of delicious desserts you cannot go wrong by stopping by here.

This was by far the worst Mexican restaurant I have ever been to, and I've been to a lot of Mexican restaurants. First off, after about 25 minutes, a server finally came to our table. When we got our drinks, mine had this weird film over it, like it was washed with oily dishes. It looked like the BP oil spill. I didn't complain, just noted it mentally and went on. Once we got our food (another 30 minutes), we proceeded to eat, but guess what? No silverware!! As I looked around the restaurant, I noticed that we were not the only patrons wondering how we would eat our meals, without looking like neanderthals. I just got up, and got ours myself. Now the fun part. To say that this food was anyting less than disgusting would be a compliment. My food was mostly vegetables, like, whole onions, with about 4 pieces of steak, which I would definitely not describe as "tasty". After struggling through the meal, I notice that my fiancée is enjoying her meal as much as mine. She pulls out this gray piece of meat, and was puzzled as to what it was. I said it was a scallop, at least that was the form the gelatinous mess took. After eating, and paying, we went back to our hotel. About 30 minutes later, my fiancée had horrible stomach pains, followed by a painful, and sleepless night. I too had stomach pains, just not as severe as hers. The only thing that was decent were the chips and salsa. God how I wish I would've just stuck to the chips and salsa. Needless to say, we will not be returning, EVER. If you do decide to go there, it's your funeral.

This place is garbage, If you are looking for authentic mexican food along with the quintessential atmosphere then don't bother. You have a better chance of finding your heart desires next door at Taco Hell! The food here blows! The service is down right shameful, and for God's sake they don't even play real Mexican music!! It's Columbian!!!! Trust me, you will gain more enjoyment and satisfaction by finding a vagabond and gnawing on his dry cracked wretched old feet for the time that it would take you to realize that this place is Jack Squat!!

I ordered the Fiesta Fajitas and they came wrapped in cold tortillas... which was strange since fajitas are usually sizziling! The sides were cold and the chips and salsa were from a bag. I was pretty sad since I really enjoy mexican food. The service was good though!

  • Richard L.

It's not bad. The food portions are generous and prices are decent. They are not an uppity place and you can get some good food and drinks here. There isn't much parking so it's probably not the optimal place for large groups, but for parties of 4 or families this wouldn't be a bad option. You're not walking into a five star restaurant but it is an okay place.

First time customer. Really enjoyed the food. Unfortunately, we had a bad server which made our visit only 3 stars. We were the first to be seated in an area that had 8-10 tables. The waitress did not write our order down and immediately took the order of a table that came in after us. 10 minutes later that other table got food, and five minutes after that the waitress came back to verify our two kids orders...which she got wrong. It was then that I believe she finally placed our order. By this point all the tables are full and many have received their good. Our waitress won't come by our table so I ask another waitress for the manager. Our waitress shows up and asks what the problem is. Mind you, all the other tables have their good now. She got an attitude immediately and said,"some orders just take longer than others". I asked for her manager again and one never came. If she had apologized and admitted she made a mistake, I would have been happy, but she acted like I was expecting too much. 30 minutes after placing our order the food comes. One of the children's order is wrong. When I notify her of the mistake she asks me if we want to keep it or pack it "to go". I told her I didn't care what she did with that food because it's not what I ordered. This really angered her so I had to tell get to just bring me the correct order. Very upset the remainder of the meal....and she acted like everything was fine. Will give it another shot and hope for a different waitress.

This place has lost it.. Not only does the food suck, but the service is now rotten. I asked for some time between our apps and entrees and was offered to have our food left under the heat lamps. Portions are now sorry and the quality is suspect at best. Time for Tito's to reload or go home because $15 enchiladas should be epic, not awful... Definitely taking Tito's out of the rotation. I can make better at home..

I have a great experience every time I go to Tito's. Tito's serves fresh, warm chips along with excellent salsa right when you're brought to your table. You can't go wrong with any of the entrées. One of my favorites is the molé. A must try is an assortment of Tito's Mexican sodas; my favorite is pineapple.

DON'T BOTHER! Bartender was so rude. It was Valentines day and we stopped in for a quick lunch on the way to Newport. The bartender was talking about her personal plans which I didn't want to here and laughing saying, "is this your valentines dinner"? No, but what if it was, who is she? The service was horrible. She had soaps on and was annoyed when we asked if she would put the Olympics on. I asked a question about the menu, she rolled her eyes, looked to my Husband and laughed. Then when the food came it wasn't what she said it would be, it was what I was asking about. And didn't want. I planned on drinking a couple of beers but when her friends showed up with TWO babies and sat in the bar I had had enough. What horrible service.

This is our favorite Mex restaurant when in Newport. However, this last visit was not up to snuff so it gets 3 stars (still "A-OK" ). We went for the nachos and picture of Margaritas, what a dinner!. The parking lot was almost full but there were still 3 tables left, so never let a seemingly full parking lot stop you from going. The chips were thick and just OK. I've gotten used to the very thin and hot chips that other places serve. The "famous" salsa was also just OK, seemed like it was basically tomato sauce with some herbs. Put them together for the nachos and it was truly "just OK". THe margaritas are about the best you can get in a restaurant, not acidic but on the sweet side, which is good and brought our experience back to A-OK. Service that night was not "A-OK" but "Y-uck". It was around 8:30 on a Friday and our waitress acted like it was past last call and time for us to go and she had better things to do.

Stopped in the other night for a late-ish dinner. (Well, later than typical dinner hours). Service was fairly quick and food came out fast. I had the Burrito/Taco combo plate. It was just ehhhh; can't put my finger on it, but neither had any kind of different, subtly unique, or freshness taste to them. My dinner was just Blah. I would have been happier with Taco Bell next door.

Not so good if you're used to authentic Tex/Mex or Mexican food. Good if you don't know any different. The enchiladas aren't made with good quality cheese. Rice lacks flavor. Also, never received our queso despite her writing it down. However, this place gives one free chips/salsa unlike others.

  • John M.

Hadn't been here in years - not since they converted to table service. We were greeted quickly and told to sit wherever we like. Fresh, warm chips and salsa were delivered within one minute to our table. They have a selection of sodas bottled for Tito's, so I tried the Tito's root beer and it was great. I had the Tito Burrito with shredded beef. It was very good. Service was quick and efficient - though not very personable - but that's fine with me at a taco stand for lunch. I don't agree with many of the negative comments in previous reviews. There was no "funny smell" and it was WAY better than a Taco Bell.

Worst service ever! Went for coworkers birthday, hardly saw the server, 2 of 5 meals were incorrect and we had to chase down server for any of our additional needs. Oh the place was empty, no excuse.

Really liked it!! My husband and I are both Hispanic and new in this state, yes some of the dishes are not authentic but I know it's as close as we are gonna get out here, not like Cali :) waaay better that taco bell thats for sure!!! Everything was good and fresh!! We will def be regulars!!

The ONLY reason I am giving this place 1 star is because our waitress (Mariah) was pleasant. Other than that, well...... First off, the hostess had a face longer than a horse. What was up her ass??? She sat us, didn't say a word, then simply placed the tray of chips on our table. Second, the so-called chips and salsa were a good indication that the food was going to suck. I mean, these chips are straight out of a bag and the salsa was straight out of a bottle. Then my wife's margarita shows up. Holy shit!!! It tasted like crap, and they DID NOT use Herradura tequila as we requested. I ordered the Fiesta Chicken and Steak Fajitas. Now, when I usually order fajitas they come in a searing and sizzling pan. Mine came wrapped in a cold, flour tortillas coupled with very watery green peppers. The rice that came with my dish could have very well been straight from an Uncle Ben's pack of rice. Then, my daughter's rolled tacos came out. OMG. They are the type of frozen, pre-cooked tacos that you get from a supermarket freezer. All I can say that $45 for all of this was 1) a rip off and 2) an insult to us as customers. We paid decent money from extremely crappy food - we expected fresh food, not frozen lean-cuisine crap. Now, being Newport, I can understand that maybe Mexican food is not as 'authentic' as it could be, but damn, this food SUCKED!!! Anyone that says that this food is good certainly does NOT know what real Mexican food. So, a better description would be Mexican-inspired food.

Good food and pleasant decor. Friendly staff and prompt service. Better and less expensive and than many of the Thames St alternatives. The drinks were reasonably priced and while not overly strong actually had alcohol in them - also unlike some downtown alternatives.

Wow. I'm surprised to log onto Yelp and see such a low rating for Tito's Cantina. The last time I was in Newport in 2006 (before I knew about Yelp), I liked this place so much I think I ate here three times in one week. So when I returned to Newport this week, I didn't even bother looking it up on Yelp. I just went, and I was very pleased with my meal there. I grew up in San Diego, and Mexican food is a staple in my diet (if you can call it a "diet" ha ha). When I go to a restaurant that claims to be "authentic", I always search for things like mole poblano on the menu. Tito's has mole chicken enchiladas, which is close enough for a restaurant in Rhode Island 3,000 miles from the Mexican border. They weren't AS good this time as they remembered they were last time I was here two years ago, but they were still very tasty. They also have great chips and delicious salsa. It's a fairly small place with maybe a dozen tight booths. It might be difficult to squeeze a wheelchair between the column supports and the tables, but the atmosphere is vibrant. The service was prompt and professional. The price is reasonable for both the quantity and quality of food they provide. I'm certain I'll be going back to Tito's again while I'm here in Newport (and whenever I come back).

My friend and I wanted to have a mommy margarita night and decided to go down the street to Tito's. I hadn't been in a few years but what I remembered, I liked. When we arrived, it was fairly busy and the hostess told us we could sit at the bar while we waited for our table. We went to the bar and ordered two margaritas...very expensive ones at that. We waited about about ten minutes and had not received our drinks, though the people down the other end of the bar who sat after us already had theirs. The hostess came over and told us our table was ready. We told her that we hadn't received our drinks yet. She assured us that our waitress would bring them to us shortly. Another ten minutes later, the waitress comes over to our table with menus only. We ask about our drinks and she responds that they will be right over. Another ten minutes goes by and she comes back empty handed again to take our order. I'm thinking we should just cut our loses and get out if there but we stayed. She takes our order and before she leaves I ask her to get our drinks and put in an order for the next round as it surely won't be there for another thirty minutes. Our drinks FINALLY arrive and they were AWFUL! They clearly were made incorrectly and could have gotten the whole place wasted. They had at least five times the amount of tequila in it and we saw the bartender sniggering while we drink them. The rest pretty much the same...food was terrible and we were both afraid to eat it for fear that someone did something to it. The final insult was not realized until the next day. We had paid half in cash and have by credit. My friend added a tip on the credit card receipt and we left...a bit buzzed due to the horrible drinks we forced ourselves to finish..,they were so expensive! The next day, my friend looked at the receipt a d realized that the waitress only put twenty of the fifty dollars of cash on the bill and put the rest of the amount on the credit card. So, she got tipped twice for terrible service! She stole from us!!! Even worse is I know this girl! Will never go back! Ever!

Always enjoyed going here. Last time we had a fabulous waitress. Tonight I brought my kids in for Cinco De Mayo. Didn't warn us the drinks came in a bottle. That gets expensive. I asked for chips instead of fries in 1 of our to go orders. No fries and the cornbread was shoved between the beans. Not good. We went early so it would be better. Guess not.

Ehhh... the food was alright for what it was. Not typical Mexican fare- baked beans and cornbread with your enchiladas, chips and salsa fresh from the bag in the kitchen, bacon in the burritos. Not my style but maybe this is what you get with "Rhode Island-Mex". Probably won't be back.

Jalapeño poppers were good. Tortilla soup was decent- much better after I added hot sauce. The service was mediocre- forgot our chips and salsa and side of guacamole and she was texting on her phone most of the time.

Going downhill. Food is awful now and I knew the place from day one. It's expensive to grab a quick Mexican bite and just very blah. They sell enchiladas but do not know what enchilada sauce is. They don't even have it. We were starving after the beach and wanted to grab a quick bite and it turned into a too expensive crappy meal. Get on it you guys- do something better~

I should start by admitting that when we talk dinner I usually say, "I don't like Mexican." Of course, my fiance likes to make sad eyes and tell me he wants to go to Tito's. I'm the chick who opts for Mexi fries instead of beans and rice. No one seems to mind that I scoot the little piles of lettuce and tomato off the top of whatever I order (did I also tell you I don't do vegetables). I never dip into any sauce that's on my plate unless it's mole. The food is always good, I've never had a margarita I didn't love, and most of the servers are great. Two we have encountered have been exceptional. For me, that's always the kicker, I want great service. Anyone who pays attention to my little one generally scores extra points in my book (oh, and she indicates the chips and "sauce" (salsa) are great).

Okay so a group of friends and I went to Tito's for dinner not expecting much from a Mexican food restaurant in Rhode Island. The chips are not made in the kitchen and the salsa is unfavorable and mediocre at best. I ordered the Carne Asada Burrito and was very disappointed. The steak was not marinated in a traditional Carne Asada mixture, which means no spice or flavor. It was doused in sour cream cream and the vegetables were basic and also unfavorable. If you are vesting from the Southwest stay away from Tito's. Also my buddy got the Popey's casadia and took one bite and almost threw-up. The chicken was under cooked and unetable. The only good thing about Tito's was the servous. The waitress (Danielle) was nice and very understanding. I do not recommend the eatery to anybody.

Yeahhhh they're ok. Def best Mexican this side of providence... Wait. Scratch that. I kinda like El Sapo aka freaky burrito on broadway better. BUT I'm not sure if el Sapo has margaritas.. It's Tex Mex! ...GREAT SALSA... (but it ain't california)

Anything that isn't food is decent. I won't be going back unless I'm starving and I can't make myself a sandwich.

We tried to eat here but the staff (bar tender and waitress both made eye contact with me) completely ignored our family of four. We left with out even being seated . I guess we won't be going back.

Really, I never wrote a review for this place? I go here all the goddamn time!!! Anyway, Tito's is a Rhode Island chain Mexican restaurant that is goofy and fun and all that shit, while not being terribly "authentic" by traditional standards, but fuck it, who gives a shit, anywyay?!?! It is gringorific, but it's coo! I almost always get the black bean and rice burrito. It's $6 and change. There is just something goddamn good about that goddamn thing!!! Also, I dig the salsa. It's cilantro-y and onion-y, which is coo! Other meals consist of all the shit you would expect to find on a Mexican menu. They also have a burger and some other random specials from time to time. I've been going here for like 8 GD years and the service has always been good. And that's saying something. Usually places go in and out with service, but this place has nearly always been fast and efficient. No, it's not the BEST place in the world, but how often do you really want to eat lunch at the BEST place in the world anyway, man??? So, just kick back and kick it coo!!!

Very mediocre Mexican food priced waaaaay too high. At least the decor is nice. Took the family (wife + 2 kids) there for a Sunday afternoon lunch. No hostess, just a "Sit wherever you want" shouted across the restaurant. Waitress was somewhat friendly, but a bit rough around the edges--maybe this Southerner just still isn't used to the New England personality. There's a cooler full of "Tito's" branded sodas, topped with a bunch of Tito's branded bags of chips and jars of salsa. This seemed like a good sign. So did the framed "Best of Newport" award certificates from 2008 & 2009 near the front door. The menu prices seemed a bit high to me for such a small "family-style" Mexican joint, but I figured the food must be pretty good. After all, my daughter's friend's family LOVES this place, and the husband in that family is a local restaurateur. Then the food came out. I had ordered the Baja Fish Tacos with high hopes, but after having living in Cali for the previous 2 years, I came away pretty disappointed. Pretty run of the mill stuff for a not-so-run-of-the-mill price. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't worth the asking price. The kids are both huge fajita junkies. Imagine their disappointment when their fajitas came out already wrapped in large, cold, probably store-bought flour tortillas. For them, the sizzling platter and buid-em-yourself nature normally associated with cantina-style fajitas are a big part of the enjoyment. None of that here. The ice-cream-scooped spanish rice ball next to the fajitas was even less impressive, having a consistency somewhere between rice pudding and old oatmeal. The worst part is that the asking price for these boring premade fajitas was the same as the full-monty, served-on-a-sizzling-platter-with-all-the-build-em-yourself-fixins and in-house-made tortillas you find in most other Mexican cantinas. The wife ordered some fish burritos which she could only classify as "meh." And again, a very "meh" dish at a decidedly non-meh price. Service was also just "meh". Not bad, but not great. Suffice it to say, we will NOT be returning, and I can't, in good conscience recommend this to anyone, especially with Diego's in downtown Newport serving up FAR better lunch fare for about the same amount of $$.

I really want to love this place. It's Mexican food, it's close, it's relatively inexpensive, it has just the right amount of kitsch. I can say without a doubt I can get something I love every time I go. The fish tacos are slamming and seem to be on special every time I go. They are light and tasty and fresh. Aside from that though I'm really disappointed every time I try something new ( guess what I stick to more often than not?). Sides are meh, burritos are loose and plain, my wife's quesadilla seems to change every time we go and my daughter who loves soft shell beef tacos was fighting with us with every bite. The margaritas are tasty, and the beer selection is extraordinarily average. I don't think we've ever really had stellar service, but if the food was good enough to make up for it I wouldn't even focus on it. I think this is one of those places that gets by on its legacy. I personally think I'd rather go get takeout than sit down and pay for another ok experience. I'm a sucker for local business though, so ultimately this spot still has some lives left to change my mind.

Dinner March 7th 2009 The parking lot was full so maybe this place is pretty good? Maybe not so much... As soon as we made our way in we were quickly dismissed. The group of 5 or 6 that came in before us was still waiting to be seated. We asked to be put on the waiting list for 3 while we waited at the bar. A small table for two cleared and the hostess/waitress told the group of 5/6 they could seat themselves there... One of the individuals in the party had to actually explain why they were not going to be able to fit their group into this corner... After about fifteen minutes the waitress walks by and tells our group that a party will be leaving soon and after they get up and the table is cleaned we can have their table. (keep in mind their is a divider blocking our vision) Ten minutes later I ask if the table has been cleared and am told that another waitress must have given it away. The Bartender calls the same waitress over and asks whats going on. She tells the waitress that she marked us off because she had told us to sit and we never did? The polite Bartender apologized to us and dismissed the waitress as being batty. She had been present for the waitresses and understood we had never been sat. Pros: The food was not bad. Better then I was expecting for Mexican Food in RI The Black beans were tasty The Bartender was friendly The only Mexican sit down restaurant within 15 miles? Cons: The Hostess was terrible Both Waitresses wanted nothing to do with serving us The Salsa and Guacamole dips were lacking in both flavor and definitely in size. The kitchen was really dirty. My stomach wretched a little as I walked passed to use the FILTHY bathroom. The side door was open and 35 degree breezes kept the atmosphere less then tropical. I really want to give Tito's 1 star but the Bartender is bringing it up to 2

I happen to like this place for take-out, I've had better Mexican food but this in my book is better quality than Taco Bell. My usually is just the three pack of hard shell ground beef tacos with sour cream on the side. Their salsa and chips come with take out and it's really delicious!! If you are going to call and order keep in mind they don't start making your order until you get there which is annoying when you're on a time crunch but I guess that means it's more fresh, right? There are better tasting places on the island if you're willing to venture deeper into Newport though but it satisfies my taco cravings!

  • Mary E.

Food is awful. Think Taco Bell with a margarita. The margarita was Ok but nothing special. No accounting for taste. With so many people there I thought it would be good but no just cheap. At least my bad meal wasn't expensive but considering it tasted worse than Taco Bell guess it was expensive. Seriously, Taco Bell is better.

  • Erick M.

The food was not authentic at all, and a bit pricy. The portions were okay, I guess, but not compared to an authentic Mexican restaurant. The taste was not that great...family complained about the smell of the beef. I wanted to like it, but I won't be coming back.

Went here for the first time a couple nights ago. My boyfriend grew up in Newport and raves about this place. I ordered the chicken and spinach quesadilla, cheesy and delicious in my opinion. Decent Mexican, goblet sized margaritas and thoroughly enjoyed the chips (though in all honesty I've never met a tortilla chip I haven't liked).

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I went there with my girlfriend and my parents about two weeks ago. We got the jalapeno poppers for an app, different entrees, and a pitcher of margarita. Poppers were hot and spicy, but no too spicy. We make them for family events now. The best entree was that fish quesedilla (cod and spinach). I have had it multiple times since then. The margarita pitcher was AWESOME! You get 4 margaritas for the price of 3. I don't know what tequila they use, but it makes a huge difference. My mom really liked it, if you catch my drift. Haha. GREAT FOOD, DRINK, SERVICE, AND ATMOSPHERE!!!

Living in So Cal all our lives, we know our Mexican food - it's almost a daily staple in our house! In some restaurants it's just spicy-hot with no nuance, but our shrimp fajitas for two were just right. Flavorful, plenty of shrimp and the peppers and onions still a bit crunchy. Our margaritas were very good too. Alyssa did a great job as our waitress. We will definitely be back.

The only reason I'm not going to say this was the worst Mexican restaurant I've every been to is because our server was very friendly and helpful. Upon seeing the chips and salsa that tasted like they came straight from a bag/jar, I decided to keep my selection as basic as possible and ordered chicken tacos. Anyone can make a taco, right? All I can say is the meat in my taco was bizarre. First it had absolutely no flavor. It was marinated in something that gave it a little sauce, though - It kind of reminded me of the filling from a chicken pot pie, only pot pies tend to have more flavor. I ordered the tacos "ultimate" style which means they add sour cream & jalapeños. Thank goodness I did because the jalapeños were the only things on my plate that tasted like Mexican food. My husband was equally disappointed in his burrito. It had the same weird chicken pot pie filling, only in his case there was barely any chicken and the filling included peas which he dislikes and was not expecting in a chicken burrito. I think we would have had a better meal if we had gone to the Taco Bell next door.

Excellent nachos, fanTASTic margaritas, good salsa & salty tortilla chips. The entrees are typical un-authentic Mexican fare, but good! As Tito's is the only place for sit-down Mexican on the island, it's definitely worth checking out!

  • Chris K.

When you go here, you have to know that this isnt authentic mexican food. This is American food with some mexican inspiration. If you go here hoping for something other than a half pound of cheese on top of ground beef and tortillas than you are at the wrong place. That being said I don't mind this place. Nachos, salad, burritos, enchiladas are all as they are described on the menu and nothing more. You aren't going to leave saying wow but at the same time it is fairly cheap, large portions and one of the few non take-out only american-mexican places around. I would choose this place over applebees.

Titos...Well I have mixed feelings about Titos. To sum it up, I think I have to say " This is not authentic Mexican Food." For starters: EVERYTHING IS COVERED IN CHEESE. If you know anything about real mexican food, you'd know that in Mexico they hardly put cheese on anything. Yeah, you're probably thinking " So what's wrong with cheese?" Well, I'm lactose inttolerant, and almost everything on their menu is improved by adding cheese.Sadly, I can't even justify taking one of my 'lactaid' pills when I go here. It's just not worth it. The Cheese isn't added to give it extra flavor, no no. .It's added for the sake of making it taste good. Which is bad. So yes, this is a great "Mexican" resteraunt if you've never stepped out of Rhode Island for real mexican food. ( I've had some in NYC, and from what I was told by my Texan Friend it's close, but not as amazing as real Mexican food.--So I can hardly imagine how amazing -real- Mexican food is). Anywhoo. . This is a great resteraunt to go to if you want fast and speedy service. Certianly a "Bring your kid" resteraunt, but not a "Bring your screaming bratty kid resteraunt" --if you get my drift. I like the Salsa a lot, but It doesn't taste as good as some of the salsa I've had over the years while living in NYC. Oh and the Ice Tea they put in the bottle is totally sweetened Lipton Ice Tea, or brisk. Jerks aren't fooling me. Now, don't get me wrong. Tito's isn't bad food. It's just not authentic. The food is good, and I've had a few good burriots here, it's just sad everything seems to be so dependant on cheese.

The best mexican on the island, not even close. The chile rellenos are the bomb so are the chips and salsa.

Eh... Ok food, huge portions. Not very authentic. Nice server. The chips weren't homemade or warm. Salsa was ok, ultra-mild. Tried the Mexi Combo (tamale - not good; chicken enchilada - good; chili releno - ok, not spicy at all). The refried beans and rice were fine. I don't love a lot of heat, but it was all too bland for Mexican food.

not very impressed with the food. Maybe we ordered the wrong dishes. The veggie burrito just had beans and lettuce. The chimichanga was fried but my wife did not like it much. The wrap seemed a bit raw.

Chips & salsa were good but the taco salad with chicken was kind if blah. I might go back but I'd try beef on the salad or a chicken quesadilla. I like that they had their own Tito's gingerale.

In a word: HORRIBLE. We should have turned around as soon as we walked in...the old gas station bathroom odor hits you like a strong wind in a bad storm. But no, we persevered because we were starved and pushed for time. The salsa comes in small plastic, coffin shaped plastic "bowls". The salsa is sweetish and has little depth. The chips are thick, hard corn out of a bag...a stale bag. I ordered a shredded beef burrito. It was edible but just barely and tasted off. Not mexican. My co-worker ordered a seafood enchilada. His was cold in the middle and he was sick a few hours later and was restricted to a bathroom for the better part of 10 hours. He is a big man and did not finish half his plate. My recommendation is to go to the Taco Bell next door. It would rate a 5-star ranking in comparison.

Worst, most inedible Mexican food I have ever had. I got the chicken nachos, the chicken tasted canned. I ended up sending them back because of how awful they were. My friend and I also got sweet potato fries which were soggy and flavorless and my margarita was watery. Needless to say, I will never go back.

I stopped at Tito's for a quick bite while I was in the middle of wrapping up my shopping on Christmas eve and it was nice to find the place as good as I remember it. It's been several years since I last got food there (aside from the salsa and chips, which you can find in some Massachusetts grocery stores) -- and about ten years since I last lived on the island -- and the way that businesses seem to be folding there nowadays, it was truly refreshing that a small non-chain like Tito's is still open. I hope they continue to thrive; I consider Tito's a symbolic middle finger to the Taco Bell that operates next door to them. I had the chicken burrito. It wasn't loaded with toppings -- lettuce, cheese and that was pretty much it -- but it was hot, lightly seasoned (I kicked it up with some El Yucatero red habanero sauce), and the chicken was tender and delicious. It was a good quick fix, and the handful of chips and small container of salsa that they always throw in is a nice touch. I ate it in the car, but there is table seating as well as a full bar, which I don't think was a feature when I was living in Newport. The service was quick and the staff was warm and personable. Total pros. Give these folks your business next time you're there.

Tito's fifteen years ago was great, earlier this year it was good, today it was terrible. The Tortilla Soup was bland at best and could have been served at a retirement home. My Chicken Tacos, even with a pile of hot sauce still had no flavor and no texture, just mush. My husbands Chimi was barely fried, looked like it was filled with cat food and had peas in it. Peas, really? Chips and salsa were fine, so was the Margarita. Not sure who was in the kitchen but they might want to go find a nice latina to teach them how to cook. We won't be going back.

  • Jonathan R.

This is not fair to Titos, coming from LA this place feels like a huge chain. The margaritas are the best in town, the mexican food hits the spot if your REALLY craving mexican. That being said, the food is not memorable and isn't authentic. I will continue to go when I need my fix, the place has a monopoly on mexican in the area located between every imaginable chain.

    (3)
  • Gary S.

This is the place to go if you want a Margarita. They are excellent. The burrito I had was stuffed and tasty, but as another reviewer noted, everything was covered in cheese. Not a bad thing, only an observation. Everything was very fresh. The chips that were served seemed like they were from a bag and not made fresh. The salsa tasted the same way. The taste was okay, but nothing to rave about. Service was fast and courteous. I didn't use the bathroom, but don't think I will after seeing the pictures. I intend to return again. BTW, I found Jonathan R.'s review to be the best one.

This place has good Mexican food in suburbia. It's next to a Taco Bell, so it creates a choice between "cheap & fast" and "sit-down good."

I went to Tito's with hesitation, based upon reviews that I had read both here and on other sites. My daughter was hounding me to go, so we did. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. There weren't many people there, so it wasn't very noisy. The service was so-so; there were 4 of us at the table and only 2 place settings. After our food came we had to ask for 2 more place settings and it seemed like an after thought to the waitress. Not the worst, but not the best. The chips and salsa were very good; warm chips and a nice chunky, not-too-hot salsa. My only complaint here is that I wish they put it in a decent sized bowl and not a small plastic container. I got cheese and spinach enchiladas which I really liked. Came with refried beans (very good) and rice. Had a pomegranate margarita which was very tasty and very large! My one friend had a burger and it was way overdone, but she chose not to say anything or send it back, so I don't know how they would treat a situation like that. All in all, I wouldn't necessarily rave about the place, but the food was decent, portions large, cost reasonable. Improved service would up my rating.

Tried Tito's for lunch, no suggestions by the waitress when asked and after a completely disappointing lunch and margarita we are still trying to understand how they could get the peoples choice award for best Mexican restaurant and Margarita? Taco Bell is in walking distance.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
