Definitely worth a visit to try the malasadas. Ma's version is light, sugar coated with a hint of lemon. Very delicious. A super-fluffy light version of fried dough. BTW, they are quite large 5-6" in diameter - a lot larger and no filling compared to the versions we've had in the past, but still delicious! Granulated sugar can get everywhere as feed yourself. Donuts and sandwiches are good as well, but the malasadas are the draw.

Coffe is hot and the donuts are awesome... Clean and fast! And the staff was friendly! There is also a quick and easy drive thru if you do not want to get out of the car!

I really want to like Ma's Donuts. The sign and name are charming. The employees? Not so much. On one occasions, the female who helped me was not exactly friendly but not snotty either. On my second visit, the male employee was rude, unhelpful, and gross. Customer service is not their strong point, or at least not late at night. Since I have only been in the evenings, I cannot extensively comment on their selection as it has been minimal. The malasadas are delicious. Their donuts all seem to be of the cakey-variety, no light and fluffy here. The most surprising thing about Ma's is their amazing ice tea. I would have never thought had I not tried it.

My favorite thing about this place is the fact that try are the only donut shop open at 5am. Working on base, it is often possible that I may work at 5am. Since most coffee joints open AT 5, that leaves me with little to no options. However, I'm not exactly sure how early Mas opens, but they are always a sure thing. Not to mention, the donuts here are excellent. When I bring a box to work, I can tell my coworkers are excited that I went here instead of 'funkin' blownose' which is a place I try to avoid. Needless to say, this place is really great and I'm happy I found it.

Delicious donuts, great blueberry cake donut! :)

YUM! Just got our desserts for Easter here and everyone raved about them. They were so fresh and delicious and obviously made with love. We were lucky enough to get some of the zeppole's (best cream inside!), and the chocolate silk pie. BEST desserts ever! And we love their donuts, AND the service, EVERY TIME. YOU CAN'T BEAT THIS PLACE and the great owners and staff!

We saw this place when we went to the vineyards yesterday. Tonight, after dinner, we decided to stop to see what it was all about. First of all, a 24 hour donut shop?! Awesome. This place is nothing like Dunkin. We got a half dozen donuts, a medium iced coffee and a medium regular coffee for $9.50. I get JUST a large coffee at Dunkin every morning and spend about 5.00. The coffee at DD isn't even THAT good. The coffee here was a little too sweet, but we did ask for it sweet. They have a ton of flavors - the banana was pretty awesome. We definitely need more places like this in the U.S.! I'd totally frequent Ma's if I lived in the area.

They are making Cronuts! While they obviously don't hold a candle to Dominique Ansel, they're still pretty freaking good. And they have different flavors.

Great selection, fresh donuts and coffee rolls. Excellent smoothies and ice coffee. Friendly and efficient staff. Open 24/7. Highly recommend a visit to Ma's.

This place was close to our hotel. We went here twice. The donuts tasted like donuts, but they were not very fresh. I will pass the next time around.

    (2)
  • Jim S.

We went over here because we heard that they were the only place around that made cronuts. They were ok, no big deal, I'd rather just have a normal donut. And they cost around $5 each.

When I saw this place I had to pull in and see what delicious treats were inside. I am a donut addict and was really tired of seeing dunkin donuts overpopulate the northeast like Starbucks does in the Northwest. I was escorted by my 3 yr old, who is infatuated with sprinkles. Lol its so funny to see him light up when he looks over the counter and spots the perfect donut for him. I on the other hand usually look for something in the glazed or french kruller category. But this fluffy Blueberry cake donut had my attention once I looked at the 3rd row of treats. I had to have it. We sat down and devoured our donuts like it was nobody's business. The blueberry cake was so fluffy. I believe that bake them throughout the day because we got there around 4 pm, unlike DD. I love mom and pop bakeries. They take pride in providing us with the best deserts humanly possible. Also, they have good sanwiches. I had the chicken salad salad sandwich once. But this is definitely a place to get deserts or breakfast. Lol

I absolutely love mom & pop donut shops. This one definitely did not disappoint. Definitely go inside on your first trip. You need to check out your options without the stress of being pushed through the drive-thru. There were a good 10 cars in the drive-thru both times I visited. Very reasonably priced as well. I got 2 donuts & a coffee for a little more than $4.

I have been to Ma's a few times since I moved to town last month. I agree with another reviewer, go in if it is your first time. We went in around 9-10 am and it was busy. We felt a little pressure to get in and know what we wanted. The customers were all really nice--the pressure was a bit from the cashier and I am sure from a personal feeling of, "oh crap, it is busy, hurry". The donuts are all good. We are actually picking up breakfast here this morning. And it is local! That got the final star for me.

Absolutely LOVED this place. I went with my fiancé after a lovely weekend in Middletown and I was so happy have tried it. They really do a great job with keeping up with the endless flow of customers both at the drive thru and inside. I was not too impressed with the flavor or quality of the coffees but they have nice, big sizes for a good price. The breakfast sandwiches were quite tasty though. The best part of this place was, obviously, the donuts and pastry. The bacon maple cream bar is OUT OF THIS WORLD. I thought it would be over-indulgent and sweet but it has perfect parts cream, sweat and savory. This place is worth the 45 minute drive every once in a while.

Ma's is the best place to get donuts on the island. I only go here in the mornings and the donuts are always fresh and delicious. They have a wide variety to choose from, but I always get the apple fritter. It's so yummy! It's too sugary to eat at once, so I usually save half for later. My kids love this place, too.

  • Mcmahon L.

Love Ma's. My daughter lives in Newport and found this little gem with her college friends. Now, every time she comes home to visit she has to bring home a box of Ma's donuts or muffins. I can't visit without stopping on my way home. My daughter is a huge fan of their coffee drinks, and says their sandwiches are very good (i have not tried them myself). Big plus, 24 hours and drive through. Wonder if they ship???

  • grace l.

Crowded on a Sunday morning, but manageable as long as you're not in a rush. Drive up menu does not list donut flavors, which is annoying if you don't know their options. Service was awful, even if stickers on the windows claiming they've received awards for excellent service. Staffed by lazy, annoyed teenagers.

  • Tonya P.

Driving by Ma's, it's the kind of local place that begs you stop! Malasadas on Sunday, I've only had Malasadas on the Big Island, that certainly caught my eye. Stopped in for a quickie donut, I can't remember what it was called but the icing was made with coffee syrup. Nice local place, simple menu, worth the stop!

  • Ace W.

DEE-LICIOUS! Fun fact: The "Ma" of "Ma's Donuts" is my wife Estelle! (1924-1997) On a serious note, this is a scrumptious little hole in the wall that is well worth your time and consideration. Rest in peace, my love.

    (3)
  • Carol Ann R.

Blah service, blah donuts, blah cronuts... checked it off the list of places to try...

    (2)
  • Brandon C.

This shop has a 24/7 eat-in dining room and drive through. Their donuts are of good quality and obviously made on the premises. Their apple fritters are the best. However, almost everything else on the menu is terrible. The iced mocha is water, syrup, and ice--no actual coffee or attention to detail paid like they do with their donuts. If they sold only donuts this would be a four-star establishment.

I'm on the fence.. I love their donuts. Glazed jelly is where it's at. I could easily eat like, 4 of them. Boston creme is super good too. I find the coffee to be overpriced and weak. I'd rather have Dunkin coffee; stronger and cheaper. Service has always been kind of crap the few times I've gone, from rude, disinterested counter workers to being yelled at in the drive thru for asking for a moment to decide what flavors to get. I'll only stop by once in a while for a donut or two, but that's it. Meh.

I have visited Ma's donuts once a week for years. Being in the area on my drive to work I order my large ice coffee w/ extra peanut butter, extra skim and sugar. The price has always been under $3. Recently, the total was now $3.88.. First time around I was in a rush so I paid and left leaving feedback on the website. I was informed the extra pump of flavor was the reason for the price increase. I'm pretty spend thrifty but nearly a dollar for an extra pump of flavor to brighten an over iced , watery coffee is ridiculous. Visited on 6/17 to be charged again for an extra pump of flavor at which time the manager informed me there is $0.50 charge. Not sure his math works but I didn't stick around to find out. Starbucks and even Dunkin Donuts coffee on their own do not need extra pumps but if a customer would like added flavor there is NO extra charge. If I'm paying almost $4 for a coffee it's going to be for a latte or cappuccino NOT at Ma's Donuts.

I think it was great. I really enjoyed their cake donuts and donut holes. I recommend them for sure! Nice selection and fresh.

From the outside it doesn't look very special. Once you get in though it's a cute place. The gal at the register was friendly and got my order quickly. They are famous for their " Cronut" which is a cross between a donut and croissant. They had them way before Dunkin ever did. I chose the Boston cream one which had cream filling and chocolate frosting. Wow. It was delightful. Very very sweet so I could only eat half of one. The good part is that I covered it in plastic and ate the rest the next day and it was just as good. One caveat is that it's not a donut so it's not cheap. One will cost you about 2.50. However it's more of a pastry and weighs triple that of a donut. It was worth every penny. If you find yourself in Middletown it's worth a stop. :)

  • Kelly H.

These donuts are no joke - they are tasty and delicious in every possible way....but, when they are packed improperly by the counter worker, they turn into a giant hot mess in the bag and all the flavors and awesome-ness melt off so that none of them are distinct. (I just got home and realized all of them were placed in the same bag without being individually wrapped...can you tell I am a bit bitter about this?) So...delicious donuts. Just make sure they are packed properly so you can enjoy them!

  • Keith F.

BEST donuts and this is coming from a New Yorker who has had some of the best there are (Donut Plante, Peter Pan, etc). These donuts were doughy, soft in the inside crispy outside and great icings. We tried the big donut (big enough for 6+ people!) and we weren't disappointed. Do yourself a favor and drive past Dunkin Donuts down the block and head on in to Ma's! P.s they also offer a very generous yelp check-in offer that's worth enjoying.

  • Estafany F.

Got a hazelnut latte and a breakfast sandwich. It was nothing special. Coffee was cold but I was already on my way, highly disappointed. Maybe next time I'll actually try the donuts.

Can't make a visit to Newport without hitting Ma's! Open all the time -- donuts are insanely fresh, and the milk is COLD! Gotta try the coffee milk... And, for a change, try the bacon, egg, & cheese "roll" -- it's all baked into the amazing bread they make there and it's just yum.

    (5)
  • Nancy C.

Donuts and goodies actually made on the premises! Excellent smoothies and something I've never had before...a malassada. It's fried dough with sugar, and boy is it yummy! It's been awhile since I've had a baked good this delicious!

  • Chelsea C.

OMG so delicious and great coffee. I was surprised to find a place that makes one of my favorite doughnuts I used to eat in Hawaii. If you haven't heard of or tried malasadas then you you must go here and try them, you won't be disappointed.

Loved loved loved this place I normally don't write yelp reviews but this one needed it! First off I checked into mas donuts and unlocked the deal of 2 free donuts love that idea and really worked because sometimes I can be a little lazy when it comes to writing out a review, (I know it's bad but I'm trying to get better!) any how, we discovered this place on Memorial Day and as frequent visitors from Mass we are very disappointed that we haven't discovered this place sooner!! Before we ended up at Mas we actually went to Custom house coffee over on Aquidneck street HORRIBLE idea the people were rude, over priced food $22.00 for 2 breakfast sandwiches and 2 coffees that's it!! Oh and mind you I was already in the cafe yelping up anoth other option for coffee because our food and drinks were horrible (they use powder for their frozen drinks) my boyfriend and I instantly felt sick from there and tossed $22 worth of food away as we were parking at mas and let me say how refreshing it was to be there AMAZING staff very friendly it was so busy there the drive through was packed and I can see why! Food amazing, cheap, and delicious actual home made choices plus they're 24 hours! I'm so glad we found this place it's our #1 spot when we visit the Middleton/Newport area for sure!

The BEST chai tea I've ever had. Chocolate frosted donuts were very fresh and good too. Not as sweet as DD. Very glad the the DD line was crazy long, so I was able to convince my stubborn guy to drive the half mile to Ma's.. He was glad we did, as he said much better donuts and iced coffee- nice and smooth. 5 stars for that hot chai tea.. I wish I could find one that good here. Perfect example of how well the Yelp app works when you're on a trip-- never would have known of Ma's without it!

My boyfriend and I were staying in the area for a little vacation and I was so excited when I saw this place on our way to the hotel as I thought it was a local stop...I used the deal for 2 free donuts... Unfortunately the donuts were not fresh and almost ran on the stale side. Honestly, I would just go to Dunkin for consistency.

Whoever is working on 22Feb15 at 1230 midnight needs to smile and greet customers. Never been here and it was our first visit since Dunkins is close for the night close to where we live. We drove 10 miles to be here and get this kind of customer service is unsat. I heard so much good things about Ma's donut but after tonight, I rather go here during the day may even the service is better.

Are you in Middletown? Is it 2am? Driving aimlessly around the Island getting old? Well, you need to get your dumb ass to Ma's donuts. Pull yourself a chair to an empty table, grab some coffee, and lament all the poor choices that you've made in life.

    (5)
  • Alexa C.

Maybe this place should invest in new cups their cheap styrofoam cups have been handed to me NOW TWICE and the bottom let go and a full medium iced coffee ended up on my lap and all over my car before work. Good food otherwise... Way better than dunkin

Havent been to Ma's in a while. I used to come by a couple times a month while I was living in Warren and working nights in Newport. My cover band played a show in Newport saturday night and I spent the night in Aquidneck so of course Ma's was on the radar in the morning. Step 1. If its your first time then I do NOT recommend the drive-thru. Take a minute to go inside and look at everything...and then struggle with your decisions instead of holding up other cars. Step 2. Say "Umm..." a lot when the girl at the register asks "How can I help you?" Step 3. Change your mind 15 times within a 2 second span...make a solid decision and then panic and go with a last minute change up. Step 4. After the girl at the counter asks "Anything else?" awkwardly place a 10lb loaf of they're sweet bread on the counter (impulse buy...totally worth it). Step 5. Sit, relax and enjoy. I had an iced peanut butter flavored coffee (since im obsessed with anything with peanut butter in it) and a chocolate cinnamon roll. The coffee was really good but not quite as peanut buttery as I was hoping. The cinnamon bun was soft and delicious. My counterpart for the morning had an Iced Banana Nut(?) coffee I believe and a lemon square. I tried her coffee...tasted like it sounds. Very good. I hate lemon or lime pastry anything so I will not comment on the lemon square since I refused to try a bite. Side note: the sweet bread can double as small bass drum suitable for small clubs or acoustic gigs. Very good toasted...might try to make some french toast with it later this week!

Came here on my way back to Jersey after a long weekend. Glazed jelly donut was stupendous, it was as good as I expected if not better. The iced pumpkin coffee was the perfect compliment. DD eat your heart out, if only Ma had one of these joints near us.....

Went in a few days ago in the morning. Overall a solid donut place. The dining area was dirty. staff was nice. Loved the honey dip and the apple crumb donuts the best. The apple filling was good and had a good light frosting and crumb topping, unique. Not a fan of the ones with cinnamon powdered sugar so this was a nice option. raised chocolate and jelly were pretty standard. plain donut is dense in the old fashioned style so thats meh. maple donut was ok but not as good as Allies. I am picky about the cream filling in the boston creams and usually find them to be average but this was more of a vanilla pudding filling, really good. looking forward to trying the honeydip with jelly filling. they have many coffee and muffin flavors so that's nice. open 24 hours with a drive thru.

  • Renay J.

Deeeeelish! I am drooling just thinking about the butternut donuts...We went there twice when visiting Newport for the weekend and I wish we got more donuts to take back with us. Their customer services is not the greatest, but I'm not going there to chat up the staff - I'm there for the food! Their breakfast croissants are tasty, iced coffee is good (if you ask for it sweet, they make it VERY sweet), and the donuts are wonderful. Honey dipped cronuts are awesome as well

  • Alissa D.

Since they've recently redone the inside of this little coffee shop it makes me want to stop there more frequently. It's much cleaner than it used to be! They have an array of flavors for coffees like Snickerdoodle, Pumpkin, Chocolate Milano. All of which are tasty. They do not use syrups, the flavor is roasted in the beans. I usually have an iced Mocha Java (half coffee half chocolate concoction). On a good day, similar in taste to Honey Dew's Mocha Madness. Their donuts are better than other places around here. I tend to go in the afternoon when they aren't the freshest (go in the morning to ensure a non stale donut!). They also have breakfast sandwiches and lunch. This location is also open 24 hours so stop on by if you're on a road trip or out on the town late!

  • Sean M.

Ma's is pretty much a Dunkin Donuts clone. Earlier in the summer we tried some donut-holes at a party. We got a dozen this past Sunday. Nothing blew us away. Two or three bites before you hit filling on the Boston Creme. They did clone everything about DD including the bad service. This location has a drive-thru.

    (2)
  • Susan R.

Pretty good bagels, pretty good coffee, pretty good donuts - though slightly greasy on the outside. Seems very popular with the locals.

    (3)
  • missy l.

nothing stood out at ma's for me. the doughnut was.. a doughtnut and the coffee was.. a cup of coffee. i did like the drive through - nothing like getting my glutton on as fas as possible without even stepping out of my car.

    (3)
  • Cailin B.

The donuts are pretty great, and I'm a sucker for mom and pop donut places! Wasn't a fan of their regular coffee, but their salted caramel coffee was awesome.

    (4)
  • Amanda P.

I'm always up for an independent doughnut joint, but I couldn't tell the difference between these and Dunkin's. Not worth the calories.

    (2)
  • Seth M.

Ma's doughnuts and more. the best ever. Well almost. As with most doughnut places, depending on what time you go (they are open 24/7) they could have a lack of doughnuts or they could be stale. Normally they are awesome though. The coffee is good but not consistantly good.

    (4)
  • Jeanette H.

Dunkin doesn't even come close to Ma's donuts.Mas donuts are bigger softer fresher and they have twice the selection!Plus all the cookies, pastries, bagels and the malassadas hot on Sunday's are amazing!!Plus the service and consistency is worth going back any day over dunkin!

    (5)
  • Sarah S.

Ma's- I love your coffee, your egg and cheese on bagels, and the fact that you are open 24 hours a day, thus ensuring that I am awake enough to pull the inevitable late-to-all nighters during finals.

    (4)
  • Dani G.

I do not understand the reviews drawing parallels to dunkin donuts. The donuts and coffee at Ma's are NOTHING LIKE DUNKIN DONUTS. They are prepared with what must be the old fashioned recipe consisting of special lard and a true deep fryer. Soooo tasty. The calories are not something I am prepared to talk about but I will say if I am going to splurge on a delectable breakfast pastry...it will only be with Ma. Message to Ma: Please consider expanding to off island locations. If you build it...we will come!!!

    (4)
  • Sara B.

This place was okay. I had looked forward to coming here after reading all the great reviews and seeing The yelp check in deal. We ordered the honey dipped donut, Boston cream, and Ma's donut. The honey dipped was good. It is a yeast donut so it was nice and light. Ma's donut was a cake donut and it was a little heavy. It had good flavor, though. The Boston cream was average. Looking back I should have tried the malasadas since I think they are pretty popular here. The customer service wasn't very friendly, and my daughter reported that the bathroom was so gross it made her bladder dry up. I probably won't be back.

    (2)
  • Mitch K.

Ma's Donuts is a dying breed...unlike Dunkin' (and Honeydew and...) where the donuts are made in a facility and trucked all over, they make their donuts in-house and the quality shows. The donuts are definitely larger than what you'll find at Dunkin' and they have some great varieties, from chocolate butternut (I never see this one at Dunkin' anymore) to a jelly-filled glazed that melts in your mouth. Their coffee is pretty spot on too. When I head to the island to visit my parents I always make stop in for a couple of donuts and some coffee. And oh yes, they have malasadas on Sunday!

    (5)
  • Winter D.

Ma's donuts are DELISH! Customer service not so great.

    (4)
  • Megan W.

If you've ever had a real malasada don't get one here.
