Love this great resturant. Everything is cooked to order. Small inside but it reminds me of grandmas kitchen. I have eaten here over a dozen times and not one complaint ever. Portions are large. Service is great. This is the one place I get excited to eat at.

A friend told me about Macera's, which is a good thing because I probably never would have found it otherwise. It's tucked into the back of a plaza off of Oak Lawn Ave I always use the Mardi Gras Club's palm trees as my location marker. This tucked away place is a world of its own, once you get inside. The decorations change with the holidays and depending on the time of year it may be a Valentine's theme or a patriotic salute to Memorial Day. My friend described it to me like this, "It's like they ransacked the party store." On to the food...I've enjoyed everything I've tried. I like to take my family here when they are in town. My grandmother and I were very impressed with their homemade spumoni, which if you've only ever had the Friendly's version like I had, you will be in for a treat. My sister and the rest at the table fell in love with their soups. The escarole and bean is fantastic, but vegetarians beware there is meat in here (pork?). The pasta fazool is equally delicious (eat with a sprinkle of Parmesan on top). One of the great things about Macera's is that they have a to-go area located on the opposite side of the restaurant, so if you want soup to take home you can grab that on your way out. When it's cold out, or I'm sick, I crave soup from Macera's! The only reason for not getting 5 stars? I've never found the servers to be very friendly. Some seem like they don't have enough experience and can't answer questions about the menu. Others seem like they are being put out because it's busy, instead of being welcoming that you've chosen to eat here, among all the other Italian places in RI. But since the chefs are great, I'll keep coming back.

This place is gross. While their soup may taste good, the amount of dirt in the place is a totally different story. And what topped it all off was when I was about to serve my kids the soup, there was a dead fly in it. The gentleman I spoke to, who was very rude and short, asked me to put it all back in the quart and return it with the fly..... Mind you its saturday and they aren't open again until Tuesday. And he says "sometimes we have a ladybug problem but I can't say it's our problem with the fly".

Great Italian food and reasonable prices. I ordered the lasagna and it comes with either a cup of soup or a salad. My husband ordered the chicken Italian with olives and requested the sauce to be mildly spicy. We both really enjoyed our meals and the portions are very generous, so we also had lunch for the next day! Their chicken escarole soup is the perfect cup of warmth and comfort. Their garden salad with the Macera house dressing is so good! I wonder if they sell the dressing by the bottle to go?! Service was good -- we had a really friendly waiter who definitely deserved his 20% tip. FYI, the place is very small and when you first walk into the vestibule there's a stand with a sign in sheet. You write your name down and how many are in your party and a hostess/waitress will be out shortly as tables become available. However, if you are ordering take out, you can go to the left side and place your order (the right side is the restaurant portion).

I can't say enough about this cranston staple. I have been going here since I was kid. The chicken escorole soup is THE BEST! The other food here is no different.I go here regularly if I want a nice italian meal. The only complaint I would have is that the restaurant needs a facelift. Other than that I love it. Check it out!

Went for a private party and they had the back room nicely set up for us with our own bartender and a buffett. It was mostly brunch food. There was some pasta and other dishes too. The best part about this place is in the name. SAUCE. Sauce sauce sauce! So many sauces to choose from! I forgot about the other stuff and tried 4 of the 6 or 7 sauces they had neatly laid on the table. Delicious.

Staff - Young, attentive, unaffected, charming Appetizers - Everyone raves about the chicken soup and they're right. Outstanding. - White chowder was reported to be very good. - All salads ordered were fresh and good. - Calamari was disappointing: lightly (beer?) battered, rings only, no tentacles no dipping sauce. Entrees: - Pasta dishes were reportedly excellent and portions huge. - My eggplant parm was disappointing: I was expecting/hoping that it would come in a casserole dish, layered tall with sauce and cheese and served bubbling hot. Instead it lay kind of flat on a regular plate with a slice of mozzerella just melted on top. Same with my sister's eggplant manicotti (though that was better two days later as leftovers). Desserts: - Chocolate cake was huge and reportedly delicious - Grape nut pudding was delicious - not too sweet. Order it cold. - Upsidedown pineapple cake was like a little donut and reportedly delicious Prices are good, portions are huge, and most dishes come with soup/salad/pasta options. The dining room is very small, the bathroom is right there, the decor is more Americana than Italiana.

Been here for lunch and dinner and both times weren't disappointing. Excellent Italian food at a very reasonable price. Its a small place tucked away from the main road and sometimes the wait can be stretched but its worth it. Sunday afternoons is a great time to pick up some sauce and soup...I've tried red and white chowders and the chicken escarole...by far I reccomend the chicken escarole. I will be going back to try more off the menu.

Hands down the best chicken soup in the world. It should win all soup related awards. When I am sick, this soup is all I want. When I am not sick, I compare any other soup to their's. They have truly mastered the art.

When I go to a place based on the high marks (4 stars or more), I expect good food. I have to say in this case I was very disappointed. I had the chicken parm with tomato sauce and pasta. The chicken parm was fair, the sauce tasted like it was out of a can and the pasta tasted like it was cooked in dirty dish water (yes, the pasta). If it is any consolation, I did enjoy the salad with the house italian dressing and the bread.

I come here often for lunch, and I've enjoyed almost everything I've had. Their tomato sauce (gravy) is interesting, and the soups are great. The first time I visited, I was surprised at its improbable location. The restaurant is a hole in the wall, situated in a basement in the back behind several other unrelated businesses in a large building. The interior is cozy and inviting, and the servers are friendly without being overly chatty. My only complaint is that I feel the prices are a little high for what you get.

Wasn't feeling well so I went there to get soup to go as I heard it was great. The service was quick and the chicken escarole soup was amazing. I have had other restaurants' soup to go and this by far exceeded my expectation. There was so much chicken and it was all fresh chicken shredded. This soup hit the spot and I can't wait to go there for dinner. Only reason why I didn't give them a 5 is because I didn't know that I had to bring my own container to get soup or they charge....

Seriously. The chicken escarole is what you NEED on a chilly winter's night. Order it by the gallon - or half gallon - so you can eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the next two days (like I just did). This soup is brimming with fix-ins - chunks of carrot, celery, onion and chicken. You can tell the escarole is tossed into the pool during the last moments possible. It still has a palpable crunch...even after a good reheat at home. Oh - and the itty, bitty star pasta is finished to al dente perfection. I think I'll go reheat another bowl.

Tucked secretively between Mardi Gras and Phred's in Cranston stands the tiny Italian safe haven that is Marcera's. I didn't even know this place existed, and upon entering through the doors into a sign-in book and a tiny waiting area embellished with innocent, homelike antiquity and flair, I was immediately a fan. It felt like a roomy, fallout shelter, only with no sense of approaching danger or inevitability of canned food. It felt as though everyone who was standing loyally and cramped waiting to be seated had been here before, and kept on returning for good reason. The truth is, I'm not even all that big on Italian food, but the arugula, roasted reds, and prosciutto pizza topped with three cheeses was one of the best I've ever tasted, and I've had my share of pizza. My girlfriend and I found it to be comfortably cozy in the dining area. Unquestionably secluded and quiet, with a surrounding aura of good cheer and fulfilled bellies. The waitstaff were friendly, down-to-earth, and attentive enough on a bustling Friday night. Something may be rotten in the state of Denmark, but all is delicious in the nook of Macera's. I'll be back on a rainy night to try their soup that everyone's talking about.

Seriously this place has yet to fail when it comes to a no disappointed night of dining. I've brought in guests from out of state for dinners and they always comment on how wonderful their meals were in comparison to Italian restaurants at their hometowns. I've been coming for years and I always have my favorites but their daily specials are definitely a big hit as well. Love the carafe of lemon ice water for the table. A must try restaurant.

Macera's Restaurant is filled with ambiance and a menu of great food. We invited a couple who had never been there to join us for lunch. They were delighted with the good food and reasonable prices. The lunch menu offers a wonderful selection of entrees which include a salad or soup. The four of us opted for the salads and each one of them was crisp, fresh, and accompanied by tasty dressings. Our delicious entrees of eggplant parmigiana, chicken parmigiana, and veal parmigiana were accompanied by pasta or one could opt for vegetables for a small upcharge. The veggies consisting of a medley of spinach , roast peppers, and sliced mushrooms were fabulous. A very kind prompt waitress took our order and checked in on us periodically. One small occurrence of having a main course arrive while still eating one's salad was the factor which stole that last star from the rating. The waitstaff was gracious in holding the entree at the diner's request.

Last time I ate here I had the chicken parm dinner and chicken soup. The chicken soup and bread were very good. The chicken parm was not fully cooked (chewy/crunchy and pink). I told the waitress about the chicken and she took the plate away without apologizing at all. She later came back with the check, telling me she only charged me for the soup and was sorry. I assume the late apology was because they saw the chicken was pink when they looked at in the kitchen.

The food here is excellent. It is always fresh and the portions are big. I usually go for lunch and take home leftovers for dinner. The soup is the best. I have often taken out for parties. The atmosphere is like going to grandmas. It is decorated with a theme that they change seasonally. The staff is friendly and the service is good.

I've only been to maceras for their soup so that is all I can comment on. Best soup in RI!

Everything at Macera's is delicious, the dining room is adorable and perfectly intimate, and the gnocchi are the best in RI by far! This well-kept secret of Cranston is always serving up some of the most delicious chicken soup in the state as well as mastering the art of the pink vodka sauce that they serve over handmade gnocchi. Although these are the obvious choices, the menu also includes a pizza that is topped with arugala, prosciutto, roasted red peppers and some grated cheese... out of this world! If you're looking for food that is not just italian, but also comforting and will keep you coming back on a regular basis, I highly suggest Macera's.

Ordered take out on New Years eve ... the place was very busy as you would expect. The woman waiting the take out area was very courteous and efficient. I had a large order and everything was accurat. Prices are reasonable, portions generous, and the quality of the food very good. We eat here often ... highly recommended!

The take out soups are perfect for a cold winter day. The chicken escarole is by far my favorite. I also like the pasta fagioli. The lines can be long so be prepared to wait and space is tight but we'll worth it. I've eaten lunch here once, all the food was great. Service does take a while but that is because everything is made fresh to order!!! Well worth the wait.

Today was my first time at Macera's. I ended up at Macera's after searching online for Chicken Soup in the warwick/cranston area. I could see it got mixed review online, but I decided to try it anyway. When I first arrived I wasn't sure exactly where it was until I drove to the back of the plaza and saw a sign for Macera's take-out , and dining. I can't say much for the actual restaurant itself, but the take-out area is very small, but homey. The service was average. I ordered a 1/2 gallon of chicken escarole soup, the price was kind of steep. After tax, it came out to $10.25. The soup was pretty tasty. Nothing beats making it at home yourself, but that takes a decent amount of time out of your day. There was plenty of vegetables, and chicken in the soup. The only bad thing I would say: there was too many mini stars in the soup, and not enough broth. I would probably go back and get some more soup or try something else on the menu.

Best Chicken Noodle Soup...Ever Yeah I just made a bold statement. Macera's Soup & Sauce has a chicken noodle soup that rivals all the competitors out there. Every once in awhile, we'll order a huge tub of it for takeout which will last for no more than a day (because it's awesome). While most of my experience is takeout, I have dined there one evening. There aren't many tables (maybe around 8) but it never seemed to be overly busy. We received our food in time and it was very good. Looking for a quiet dining experience with your significant other? Check out Macera's and if you're looking for a side dish...try the chicken soup.

Portions are huge! Average dish was $15 or so...well worth it for the amount of food you get. Most entrees also come with soup or salad. We were a party of 5. I had the chicken escarole and my husband had the white chowder- both were very good! I ordered the shrimp primavera. Tortelloni cooked perfectly, huge shrimp (cooked perfect!) and summer vegetables in a parmesan cream sauce- yum! My husband ordered the chicken parm- also a hit! 5 dinners (all served with soup or salad as well as a bread basket) came to $88- pretty inexpensive in my opinion. We will certainly return! P.S. I noticed the description said it was not good for kids...maybe not little ones (under 5) but it is certainly fine for older kids!

Decent prices and the chicken parm is excellent. Not very much seating so you may have to wait a bit on busy nights. It has a very nice atmosphere that makes you feel right at home.

Love the food! Everyone raves about the chicken soup (which is totally fantastic) but I like to rave about the pasta fagiole! Its the best I've ever had (including my own, which says a lot ;) Macera's is always on the top of our list when choosing a date night spot for my boyfriend and I.

Service was slow and uninterested in being there that day...ambiance was quaint in this small family restaurant. The chicken Francaise was moist and tasty while the penne was overcooked...and they dolloped out sauce with an eyedropper. Read a great review in the paper and it didn't measure up.

Don't listen to these people. They don't know what great food tastes like. If you want a great meal at a good price go to Macera's. The food is excellent and you won't be disappointed.

We went to Macera's tonight. Wow, that was absolutely the WORST Italian dining experience I've had in Rhode Island yet! The 'sauce' is bland, the squid in my squid pasta was as chewy as a rubber band, and the prices were frankly at least 25% more than the 'ambiance' and location deserve, especially for such an obvious lack of quality and effort. Presentation and ambiance are literally on par with your average weenie joint. I would avoid this place like the plague.

Macera's has turned into my favorite restaurant! Every meal that I have gotten has been absolutely fabulous! I have tasted the different soups they offer and they are all equally good. My favorite is the Chicken Escarole with the Escarole and Beans coming in a close second. The waitstaff are always friendly and ready to help. Macera's is Federal Hill quality food without the high prices. Everything is very reasonable for the portion size you get here.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
