Since they remodeled...AWESOME!! The floor plan gives you more room to walk to your table.. The services is a lot better, fast, great prices!! I love the clam cakes & chowda. I love Iggy's but the drive kills me, so they are the next best in my area. The service was quick and the waitstaff (all) were super. They don't hound you anymore (thumbs up). The bar area they have added is beautiful!! I can watch the games during dinner or hangout after work, which I have done a couple times... Must place to go with friends & family. I would recommend the back room, for more privacy, if you want to laugh and joke without bothering other diners...

Welcome to the newly renovated Chelo's! Would you like to have an immediate seat at the bar surrounded by TVs or wait it out for the few scattered tables surrounding it? They're recently reopened having just about remodeled the entire interior, same exact menu, oh and the same train tracks, for those who remember, are still alive and well. The bartender rotation had a good attitude and the service was quick. The TVs were a bit much, and with this new setup what was generally a more quiet restaurant has turned into Texas Roadhouse a few notches lower. And without throwing peanut shells on the floor too. Good thing is there's always another Chelo's location to turn to, having been slightly let down with the months closed to rebuild the restaurant. The kid friendly restaurant of old is much, much less. For lack of photographic evidence you'll just have to take my word for it that the bar is practically right there upon entrance. If none of this is an issue and you liked the food before, you'll be back.

The refurb helped with the old dungeon-like atmosphere which sadly carried over to the waitstaff. The attitude hasn't changed, nor has the ho-hum menu. The demise of the Warwick Mall location greatly curtailed my Chelo's visits since it was the best in the chain for my money. The cutesy train over the new and greatly expanded bar area is no longer a source of awe and wonder, as it once was. What nitwit put the one thing that made this location family friendly in the BAR area? The chowder and clamcakes were decent, but the booth was unbelievably uncomfortable which detracted from the quality of our visit sharply. Gone is the peaceful, pleasant atmosphere of old and the din is NOT a positive addition. Bottom line: many local restaurants offer a more enjoyable atmosphere and an updated menu without the surly servers.

Chelos, Chelos, let's here it fellows: can't cook? Go here. Want simple fare, here you go. Chelos is a RI staple like McDonalds is an American pastime. In fact, it's the RI equivalent of a fast food, home cooking chain. To me, it's all the same, no matter if you go near Lincoln or the Warwick or Cranston area. I'm not retired and not bored nor to the point where I avoid talking to my spouse as we stare into space waiting for dinner...but you get my point; it's that kinda place. You'll get what you expect; an iceberg wedge salad (eek), bad marinara, but palatable pasta dishes...blah, blah, blah. Hey, if it's open at 2am and I'm snookered I'm there! If I'm lucid, upright and any other time of day, you better be buying! Otherwise, what can be said? It ain't "gaaaagas" but it's sure Rhode Island.

We received a gift card to Chelos.. We were a bit skeptical but I have to say we were pleasantly surprised! A few St. Patty's day beers, Thai calamari, seafood chowder, clam cakes, and beef stew for the hubs. Food was better than we expected, friendly service, no complaints!

Chelo's is known for it's local RI fare. The Cranston location has recently been renovated and the space is very nice. The service at the bar was ok, the bartenders were more interested in catching up then serving. The food was ok and typical Chelo's food. Ok for a quick bite.

Great place, like the other reviewer states -good cheap comfort food. Specials daily, like 1/2 roasted chicken and ziti for 7.99 on Saturdays, great fish and chips, incredible burgers.... delicious steak fries that will make you lose your mind. this a great staple, perfect for families kids and anyone else. I always find myself having a late lunch here 2 or 3 PM... they're always open and seem to have consistent business all day... especially weekends.

Chelo's is a RI classic. You have to try it as least once. Their soups are amazing, the food isn't too shabby, and the drinks are worth coming back for.

This one of my favorite local chain restaurants. They have the best clam cakes and chowder. Nice bar set up with plenty flat screen TVs.

Sarah and Emily are the best bartenders that Chelos has they make the best drinks and always remember what customers order

I've always known Chelo's as an average family eatery with average food. However, I have to say that I was totally blown out of the water with the quality of the food here. I ordered the buffalo chicken mac & cheese and it was, by far, the best I've had anywhere. There were definitely several kinds of cheese in the sauce and it was freshly made, and the chicken was tender, flavorful and spicy. Also, you CANNOT go wrong with the $4 margaritas!

My husband and I have fallen in love with this Chelo's. It is remodeled and very updated. The food specials are amazing! For under $10 you get a salad, the special of the night and dessert. I have been ordering the chicken pot pie on Tuesday night. The crust is flakey and it is total comfort food. We always get the clam cakes, which are the best in RI. The staff is always friendly and professional. They have many food specials. Check out the menu, because there are specials for every night of the week. You can't beat the price, and the food is made fresh. I have many food allergies and have no problem eating there. This particular Chelo's has become our favorite restaurant!

Chelo's is always a great go-to place, for simple cheap dining. The family atmosphere makes a comfortable meal for my husband and I and our newborn. I like to stick to the basics here, burgers, sandwiches, and the occasional chicken or turkey dinner. Although the clam chowder is great, I stay far away from the seafood. I have gotten sick to my stomach on two different occasions after eating the baked scrod from this location. Desserts are the best.

Nice little restaurant with a great Bar with a bunch of flat screens. Certainly a place to catch the game. The food is good though, don't get me wrong. Friendly staff. Turkey Club, Meatloaf, Clam Chowder all great selections! :)

Good, reasonably priced family restaurant for burgers and basic home-style menu items -- chicken, burgers and pasta. The clam cakes, by the way, are still the best. I hate walking into a restaurant near closing with a large party, but that's what we did on a Sunday night. The staff reacted well, and both the service and food was very good. I enjoyed a steak sandwich, loaded with mushrooms, onions and cheese. Others in our party ordered the French meat pie, baked scrod and burgers with no complaints. My only criticism -- and maybe it's a sign of the times -- was the portions at Chelo's seem to be shrinking. Even the sundae's we ordered for dessert (though very inexpensive at $3.95) were lost in the big sundae glass.

I ordered the Steak Tip Salad. The menu said that juicy steak tips would be served over "mixed greens" with grape tomatoes and red onion and gorgonzola cheese. The dried out, flavorless, unseasoned steak tips were served over ICEBERG lettuce and there was maybe 4 grape tomatoes, an onion slice and the gorgonzola. Just a huge disappointment. No way will "mixed greens" ever equal iceberg lettuce. YUCK.

Ah, Chelo's! When I moved away from RI one of the things I missed the most was the incredible (and award-winning) clam chowder and clam cakes. At the very least, you should visit this place to try them! Unfortunately for all of us, they only serve their white chowder on Wednesday and Friday (unless you go to the Waterside location where I believe they serve it daily). The other food is pretty standard, but the chowder... oh the chowder. If there were six stars I'd give them six for that chowder. The best you'll ever have! I promise :)

  • Jamie S.

My favorite place to go for a quick meal. It looks fabulous since it was redone. I always get takeout here, and I love how they show me my food before I leave to make sure its right. Been a favorite since childhood!

  • Howie B.

This will be short and sweet...burgers are among the best we've ever had. Great server, Miranda, and family-friendly atmosphere to watch Sunday football. Oh... and 1/2 price apps all day Sunday.

    (4)
  • Jacqui G.

Menu is not vegetarian friendly, and honestly mediocre at best even for a meat eater. There are so many better places in Cranston, but I give them 3 stars only because my husband likes the rotisserie chicken deal on Sundays. But again, very basic stuff here.

  • Diane M.

I had friends visiting from Cali and they wanted clam chowder. So where else is there to go but Chelo's? I love the service, the booths and the food. I opted for seafood chowder but they were very happy with the clam chowder. The seafood chowder is wonderful and I may never go back to clam chowda. Additionally we got the appetizer sampler. That was okay. I just kept thinking " I don't need this!" for all the calories.

  • Lea W.

Same food they've always had and consistently bad service. I've come to the new and improved version a few times for drinks and bites after work. It is pretty much guaranteed that if you sit at a table in the bar area instead of at the actual bar you will be completely ignored for the entire night. Need menu's? Have to get them yourself. Want to order something? Have to walk up to the bar and order with one of the bartenders because they are too busy chatting with friends to come to you. Want more drinks? Again, walk to the bar. They make no apologies for their service and will even blame you for not "flagging them down" when you want something. Why, you ask, do I continue to sit there knowing the service is terrible? Because I work long days and I like beer. Bars are beer. I leave it at 3 stars for the $2 drafts.

Been going to this Chelo's location since I was a little kid and they always seemed tired and bland. In early 2012 they suddenly closed down and construction sites surrounded the place. Later in 2012 they reopened with a full interior remodel and some very cool tweaks to the menu. When you walk in there is now a 25 person bar as the centerpiece, surrounded by the tables. It's open, airy and well lit - no more vinyl seats from the 70's, no dinky 5 person bar at the entrance and they got rid of that way too retro glass desert case. If you haven't been in a while, head back and try it again. p.s. the train is still near the ceiling and rounds the front dining area and bar.

I've seen Chelo's all over the state and have stayed away since moving here five years ago. It looked like the kind of greasy spoon I wasn't interested in. Recently, family members wanted to meet there, so I was forced to go to the Cranston location. I don't know if it is similar to the other locations, but I was pleasantly surprised; I liked the place! It was clean and bright, the service was friendly and attentive, and the food was pretty good. I went while pregnant and was craving fried food. I had some of a shared fried appetizer sampler with the regular fried goodies and had a cheese steak and curly fries. The cheese was all melty all over the shaved steak, just as I like it, and the bread was nicely toasted. All the fried stuff was done right...nice seasoning and the right amount of crunch (not soggy). I'd go back.

Hit and miss. First, there Chili, not the best. It claims that Texas Truckers say it is the best. I think it must have been a trucker that passed through Texas. The stuff has beans. If you are from Texas, that is a no no. Anyway, it is not bad stuff, but Hormel does not need to be concerned. Service is, well lets just say you are not really going for the service. It seemed like it was young ladies in a job they really did not enjoy and could not wait to get out the door. Their Corned beef sandwich was really good. Lots of meat, the rye bread was grilled nicely. Their burgers are pretty good as well. So if you are there for a lunch combo, you are in good shape. They are good prices. Stay away from the deserts, at least the Blueberry pie. It was some of the worst crap I have ever had.
