Sometimes smaller is better! Not too many guys say that but we'll stay on the subject of hoagies! If you sell something for over 35 years and survive you've gotta be doing something right. 4 1/2 stars influenced a coworker and I to visit this postage stamp sized place for lunch this week. It's off the beaten track about two minutes from Lancaster Ave. Street parking was easy and a breath of fresh air. No meters! Wonderful aromas were spilling out the door as we walked in. All the usual hoagie suspects were there including hot roast pork or roast beef. Hoagies come in either 6" inch or 12' sizes and that is very much appreciated. Sometimes when I'm working and need a quick lunch I don't need a sandwich that will feed a family of five for a month. So I ordered the 6" Italian. I was stunned by what happened next. The lady that was making my sandwich proceeded to cut all my meats TO ORDER! I'm so used to seeing them pulled off a pre-cut stack I think my mouth dropped open. Now that is FRESH! I grabbed my sandwich and a can of soda from the cooler, paid about $7 total and headed back to the office. As you can see from my pic is was a fine looking sandwich and tasted damm good. Even better I could actually finish it without needing an afternoon nap, So for lunch, 6" really was better than 12"!

I was searching for a good hoagie place rather than doing Primo or Wawa for an evening bowling event at Devon Playdrome. I found this deli did trays so I ordered a tray and a few other different hoagies to accomdate the group. The woman who took my order was very helpful in trying to figure out how many sandwiches were needed to feed our total amount of people. The food was very tasty and a definite reason to stop there for a sandwich at any time. We'll be having more bowling events and will be sure to stop back again the next time or sooner.

All the 5-star Yelp reviews really set my expectations high, because places that get so many 5-star reviews normally have done a lot to earn them. We were excited since this place is so close to us. Unfortunately, I think they're overrated, as are a lot of similar places on the Mainline, which, in my opinion, is not a Mecca for good eats. We went several times for hoagies, to give them a fair try, but they were just okay. We kept going back because it would have been so convenient for us to like them, and because we were perplexed at how they had so many great reviews? Fresh roll? Yes, but that is pretty standard, not amazing the way other reviewers put it. That's pretty much expected as a bare minimum for anywhere around Philly. Quality meats and cheeses? They were decent, certainly nothing any different from everywhere else the delivery truck stops within 5 miles of this place. There was just no flavor or uniqueness from any other generic sandwich or pizza shop around. As far as how to describe the John's hoagie? I actually think the $3.75 deal on 11" hoagies at Major's (Major Wing Lee Grocery in East Falls) is comparable in taste and quality, but half the price. Obviously Major's is a "value hoagie" and not trying to do anything gastronomically fine. Which brings me back to me original point: John's hoagies are just okay. Hoped to like them better since they're so close. After trying all kinds of stuff along route 30, from Ardmore to Malvern, there are only a handful of places I'd stop, and none of those stops would be for a decent hoagie. So if all the people who rave about John's have ever tried is a Primo's, Wawa or this, then I am not surprised at their rating, but if any of those reviewers venture out and about the greater Phila area, I'd be astounded at 5 stars for John's hoagies. Maybe they're local collage kids who grew up outside Phila and haven't gotten to know what Philly has to offer, or maybe they're that cliquey group of Mainliners who never leave the R5 corridor to free their mouth from vanilla boredom? (All the 5-star reviews appear to be from out-of-state or Wayne itself, which kind of proves my theory.) It's a shame, but there is so much more offered in Phila by way of amazing cuisine, and 30 was not very blessed with any of it. I keep wishing and hoping that each place I try along 30 will redeem the others, but I have yet to find it for hoagies. Cut Above on 3 (Newtown Square) does a world class sandwich compared to anything on 30. We also regularly drive all the way to LaSpada's in Parkside for our favorite hoagies in the Phila area. I guess if you live in Wayne (like all the locals who gave 5 stars) you'd want a nearby place for convenience, and that might add a few stars for some people. There is also a pride for some people to have a highly rated place as their go-to weekend or takeout stop. I see the value in that (if the 5 stars are earned), but for me, I'd rather travel a bit for more flavor.

I have been going to John's Market for over 5 years now. Each time I get a hoagie, it is finger licking good! Best sandwich in town!

We ordered a meat hoagie around closing time that smelled and tasted stale - threw it away after finishing half - not impressed. This was about a year ago, and I see some positive reviews, so perhaps can give it another try.

This small family owned market has amazing hoagies!! I crave their hoagies all summer long! Johns Viagra market puts any body else's hoagies to shame. They are stuffed and huge! Great prices and friendly people. I easily go there 20 times a summer and some times winter when I miss warm weather and tail gaiting with hoagies and beer!!

I was hoping to be blown away. I heard about this place from a few customers and saw so many amazing ratings. I would in general give it 3 stars but using Yelps own desctiption of 3 stars is most acurate: "Meh. I've experienced better." compared to the description for 3 stars: "A-ok" It is Just OK. HUGE sandwitches for sure! I ordered the roast pork and had high hopes. It was just ok. I paid extra for long hots and broccli rabe. Sadly there was very little on there compared to the amount of meat. I showed it to my colleague and she thought it looked like there wasnt any there at all. To be fair it was also a great value. when I opened it up i was amazed by the amount of meat on the sandwich for less than $8 is great. They were also very friendly. My coworker got the meatball sandwitch and they liked it. Maybe i just didnt get the right sandwitch. In the end I didnt even need to finish the sandwitch which is rare for me. I would rather go to the place around the corner and get the pork sandwitch they have on Fridays.

Small deli located on a back street next the Wayne train station. It's one of my favorite places to grab lunch when I'm in the mood for a hoagie. I'm still working my way through their menu, but so far, I haven't had a disappointing sandwich there yet. Prices are reasonable and you definitely get your money's worth. Parking is all on the street, so it can be a little tight, but I'm usually in and out, so I haven't had any issues yet. If you're in the mood for a hoagie or sandwich and in the area, check them out! You won't be disappointed.

The best Italian hoagies IN THE WORLD! Always fresh with high quality ingredients. Made with just baked rolls, fresh cheeses and meats, and a great variety of toppings. We ate at John's growing up and now every time we visit from Dallas we stop here on the way in from the airport. And I'm such an addict that I always order a couple extra so we have leftovers to satisfy my cravings. After spending a week at the shore this summer we headed back around noon. Instead of getting a hoagie at the shore we waited the two hour drive until we could get to John's. Was totally worth the wait. Owned by the same couple for like 35 years, you'll find the personalized and friendly service that you might expect from a family run business. The owners kids have created a line of products that are now distributed around the area. We recommend trying the spaghetti sauce. One last tip... Grab a bag of Herr's BBQ chips on your way out. They are a fine compliment to the world's greatest Italian hoagie! We love you guys!

I've been going here since I was like 10, early 80's. 98% of the time I get the Italian hoagie which is the best I've ever had. I have traveled from Horsham, West Chester and the Media area just to get one. I have ordered other hoagies for other people who have enjoyed them. For a treat here and the I also purchase the Vespa marinara sauce which is absolutely fabulous! Family owned who remembered me after not going for several years. Always friendly.

You must try this spot as you will not be disappointed. Remarkable hoagies and steaks, homemade deserts, pizza. Worth the drive or walk anytime. John, Bev, and company love what they do and it shows. Since 1978 it's been John's, before that a neighborhood bodega from my youth. Another Wayne treasure.

When I was in high school this was a regular market with a meat counter and limited groceries. Now they specialize in take out sandwiches and I have to say the the quality of the rolls, meats and cheeses are top rate. The large hoagie is enough for two and they will package onions, peppers etc on the side so you can share and still get your half the way you want it. Our favorites are the Italian and the turkey with oil instead of mayo. Call ahead as they can take a while to make, especially if you order several (we had four on Saturday). Just wish they had brewed ice tea in addition to the bottled version.

Like Captain Noah and Jim O'Brien (weep), John's has a special place in my hometown heart. One of the best places to get a hoagie and, obviously, they have lasted a long time.

These hoagies are the real deal, old school style. I went for an Italian and it reminded me of my childhood. The hoagies are very big, the meats are fresh, and the onions on the Italian were strong.

I live in the city and work in Radnor. One of my favorite parts of working out here is that I get to enjoy John's. They just do everything right here - it's a place where you are proud to give them your business. I mostly stick to hoagies so I can't speak to the whole menu, but you can tell that the ingredients are fresh and that care is given to every order.

I was in Radnor looking for a mom & pop place to get a hoagie...I didn't expect to find anything spectacular on the Main Line and I certainly didn't want a Primo's. I found John's on Yelp and apprehensively gave it a shot. As soon as I walked in the door, I knew it was a good choice, something about it is cozy. It appears to be a family business that remained from the era when Italians first ventured out to the Main Line. I ordered a turkey and corned beef hoagie (sharp provolone) with everything on it. I was pleased that they accept debit and marveled at the coke can collection. I opened the hoagie and took a bite as soon as I got in the car, I took 3 more bites before I wrapped it up, called my husband and headed home. This hoagie had the right balance of veggies and meat and everything was fresh, including the roll. I saved a piece for my husband and he hasn't stopped talking about it...he's planning to stop there to bring sandwiches home for dinner tonight.

I won't go anywhere on the mainline for a hoagie, unless it's Johns. I always have the mixed cheese hoagie but also know the special Italian (at Berwyn location only) or the cheesesteak (best made at Wayne location) are other sandwiches to rave about. The bread is always fresh. Highly suggest to anyone looking for a quick and filling eat.

  • Amrit S.

John's makes the best hoagies around. All the hoagies are excellent. The cheesesteak hoagie is one of my favorites. Instead of the typically grease-steak where the meat is cooked on a griddle, the Johns location in Wayne broils the meat. Something I have never seen done before and it is amazing. Just wish they were open on Sundays for my own selfish reasons.

Decided to check this place out based upon the reviews and friend's suggestions. Boy am I glad I did. Every thing there is fresh and made to order. The hoagie was huge I couldn't even finish it in one sitting. Very delicious sliced when you order hoagies.

I have been going to John's for Hoagies since the early 80's. I can honestly say that John's Roast Beef Hoagie is my favorite sandwich anywhere. The bread is delicious and the hoagies are filled with excellent meats and vegetables. I now live in Northern Virginia and I make sure that I get my JVM Hoagie whenever I am in town.

John's is the best sandwich shop on the Main Line. Their deli meats are fresh cut and their bread makes the sandwich true perfection! It is the only sandwich shop in the area my husband will order from.

A 5 star rating is not something you want to come to lightly. I always hesitate because you really want the restaurant to prove it to you and you don't want to be one of the people who will give it out like the transit authority gives out parking tickets. But this was easy. I've been coming to John's for lunch for about a year and have almost run the gamut in their menu, choosing mostly between BBQ pork, chicken salad sandwiches, tuna sandwiches, tuna melts and Italian subs. Everything, all of it, fantastic. I even got the pizza once just to see if I could get a bad meal. Not even close. It was better than one of the pizza shops down the street. The prices are reasonable: You can expect to pay between $4.50 and $6.50 for most sandwiches with pizzas running you a little more. Parking can be somewhat of an issue and the inside crowds up quickly, but this place earns its 5 stars for how well they do so many sandwiches.

John's is a small chain of hoagie/sub shops, not really markets, in the west Philadelphia burbs. They have two other locations. In nearby Berwyn and in Brookhaven. I've never been to the Brookhaven location. John's offers a standard array of hoagies, cheesesteaks, chicken cheesesteaks, etc. They are consistently good, fresh, and reasonably priced. The one in Wayne has no frier and no real seating, except a tiny counter with 2-3 stools. In all- a reliable hoagie!
