I admit it's been a few years since I last went to Penn's Tavern. Still, I know it is still there, and there was not a review. People should know about this place, as the food is great, and it is off the beaten path. The restaurant is an old stone farmhouse right off of the road. Looks like a nice place from the outside, which is why I thought about trying it back when I was in college at Bucknell University. Inside it is a little dim, but you would expect that from an old house. The food was excellent - I believe that I had a steak both times I was there, and found it to be done very well. The people I was with also enjoyed themselves, and I have recommended the place to others over the years, and not head a bad review. I recommend dressing up to go, though I expect that you could get away with jeans and a nice shirt. The service was good, but, as I said, it's been a few years... Since it is out of the way, not many folks know about it - therefore, on those busy weekends at colleges (graduation, parent's weekend, homecoming), when it is hard to find a local restaurant, this may be just the place for you.

I've been to Penn's Tavern twice in the past year. Unfortunately I've been quite disappointed both times. I go for the German specialties as that's a real treat. But both times I thought the quality had declined. They seem to have forgotten how to make spaetzle, which is a major component of each dish...it's the noodles! While the environs are really beautiful, I'm reluctant to go back again. It's pretty pricey and the quality just isn't there. Overall they also just need to update some of their menu items too. Most of their apps and sides feel like they are straight out of 1985. Skinny strips of overly steamed veg medley is just not a tasty accompaniment. The sad part is, in each case we made a few small comments about something not being right and we felt really brushed off or argued with, even by the owner. The waitress was apologizing to us in whispers when no one was looking, noting as well a new cook with no interest in feedback. Too bad...hope they improve.

Food was very appetizing. The veal and lamb were made to order and to perfection. The cheese plate surprised us with the melody of aromas and flavor's.

I love this place. Great beer and great food. Some of the best crab cakes around.

I have not been here in many years,I always used to enjoy it. It is still really good, great atmosphere and really nice waitstaff. The building itself adds much to the dinner mood, dual fireplaces and a very rustic feeling. A little more expensive than most with similar menus, but it is worth it because of ambiance. We went with another couple and we all said we would like to return, especially since they now have an outside deck overlooking the river. The present owner has had it for seven years and comes around to all the customers to welcome them. I had scallops with roasted veggies and potatoes. Good, but some of the smaller scallops were a little overcooked. I informed the owner and she promised to let the chef know. One of us had a steak and it was really great according to him. One had chicken which was really overdone and an adjustment was made to her bill. My wife had stuffed flounder with crab meat which was great. They have s good selection of German beers. The menu has a German touch. We will come again with reminders of overcooked food when ordering. If all our order had been properly cooked I would have given 5 stars.

Second visit. Great service. Nice people. They dont seem to mind you walking around in other rooms exploring the 1703 structure. Great food. Wife likes it there. We will be back.

Food was absolutely delicious and the service was fantastic. What was very disappointing was the music was way too loud for the room. We had 8 in our party and had to yell to hear one another. The tab with tip was $325 and we'd pay it again if the music was played at an appropriate level. This is our third visit and each visit was the same...great food, great beer, music too loud.

Inconsistent. The soup was just warm, but the salads were fresh and the dressing home made. The duck was quite good but the Schweinrucken was dry. The draft Warsteiner a great surprise, but the brotchen (rolls) were disappointing.
