There was no one here on a Tuesday night. If you check in on Facebook you get free nachos and cheese dip. If you are looking for more traditional tacos, this is not the place. I had the Seared Mahi Mahi $8 "fire roasted corn and black bean salsa, pico de gallo, cilantro aioli". Comes with 2 and was pretty good but nothing special. There are also a bunch of different kinds of hot sauce on the tables for you to try. I only liked 1 of them .. all the other ones teasted weird to me and were not hot. The Duck Flatbread $17 "grilled pineapple, goat cheese, arugula" was very nicely presented but I don't think was worth the money. The food was nothing special for the price. The people were friendly but I don't think I'll be back.

My parents were visiting recently, so we happened to be driving around looking for dinner + landed here. We all got something different - seared mahi mahi tacos, regular fish tacos + dad got the 'Union burrito.' We also shared the strawberry habanero guac. Everything was really good, very fresh. In fact, you can see the 'chef' preparing the fresh fish, chopping veggies - it warmed my heart to see such dedication to cooking with real food + seeing the skill involved in making it. I take my food seriously!! The food was excellent but didn't seem to match the atmosphere ... It felt like I was in a Chipotle, but with WAY better food. Also, the menu was split between two walls at this location + was a little difficult to process ... I could redesign it in exchange for tacos? :)

Very nice Mexican on the fringe of NoLibs. at Girard and Franklin. A tad expensive considering the neighborhood is still dicey and hasn't yet attained a true NoLibs environment. For suburbanites please note parking is limited to street. Im sure you are thinking " what a snob". Not meant that way. Just a dose of reality. When the neighborhood catches up, and it will soon then 9 and 10 for tacos for tacos wont seem expensive. Suggest to owner to drop mainline prices in the meantime. With all of that said... The tacos were awesome. The decor of Union Taco is hip n fresh and the staff were overwhelmingly professional and friendly.

I ate here today, for the 1st time. It was terrible. I left uneaten tacos in the little basket to be thrown away. I had tacos: oxtail, pork carnitas, and pork cheek al pastor; chorizo cheese fries, churros, and mango guac. The oxtail and pork cheek were inedible, i had to spit the oxtail out in a napkin. I make oxtails and love them, this was a salty (I love salt!), dry crazy tasting mess. The best taco was the carnitas, which I managed to choke down most of the filling with a fork. The taco shells were thick nasty flour tortillas. Didn't notice the little note in the corner, on the wall, in chalk, that you have to ask for corn tortillas (presumably soft corn). When I saw the menu offerings, I presumed it would be authentic/traditional from the get go, with soft corn tortillas. The tacos had too much filling. They were huge over-stuffed messes. Due to the poor taste, I tried to fix with the buffet of hot sauces they have on the table. cheese fries: they were a mistake, but was given to us anyway. My friend liked them. they were OK, lacked chorizo. Guac: gimme a break guac. $7 for guac they purchase (not made in-house) and then slop toppings. It had the terrible store-bought taste and texture. like the guac from Mexican Post. Best thing: the churros. warm and crispy (maybe a bit ovecooked, not soft at all) but the flavor was good. the cinnamon sugar managed to get over everything and person, kind of like sand at the beach, but it was good, and you got a lot with the order. Drink selection was poor, you must be a soda drinker to enjoy. Staff was friendly and helpful. Flies were making a lovely habitat in the window and the floors and window sill were not clean, but the space overall was bright and looked like someone wiped the table at least. Overall: waste of time, money, calories. Would never eat there again on my own volition. If I found myself back there for whatever reason, I would order churros.

Union Taco Ordered On Jul 6 2014 at 5:17 PM 1 Union Burrito $ 9.99 1 Pork Carnitas Taco $ 7.00 Subtotal $16.99 Tax $1.44 Delivery Fee $1.00 Tip $2.07 TOTAL $21.50 It's not that the food was terrible, I just didn't care for it. In fact, I didn't think it tasted good at all. -- and it was expensive for what it was. It was just too dry and salty for my tastes.

Review based on Delivery order only!!! Located this place using GrubHub. Wanted delivery to my job located near Broad and Spring Garden. Wanted to try something different than the normal Chinese, Pizza, Hoagie and Salad places located around here. I ordered the Fish Tacos and Chips & Queso. My colleague ordered that Mahi Mahi tacos. The food arrived very fast. Was surprised when I received that call that the delivery guy was outside. Each taco order came with 2 nice sized tacos each. No too bad for the price. More expensive than I've paid for Tacos at other Mexican restaurants, but I digress. My colleague stated her tacos were pretty good (and she agrees with my upcoming TIP later in the review). The fish tacos I ordered were a bit soggy from the ginger soy that goes on the taco (TIP: have sauce put on side if being delivered). The flavors of the fish taco were great. I do wish there were a bit more veggies on the tacos. The chips & queso were my main issue. Although I loved the chips, the queso sauce was horrible. The queso did not work for me. I actually ate the chip plain, and enjoyed them. If it wasn't for the queso, this would be a 4 star review. I will go to the restaurant soon to review the atmosphere and more food. So this review will be updated.

Not going to lie... when the gal delivered our tacos and I saw the flour tortillas I was going "Nooooooooooooooooo!" in my head. You see, I just feel very strongly that excellent tacos come in corn tortillas. Or rather, I used to feel very strongly, because these were some excellent tacos. Now the pork tacos that we thought we ordered were not the ones we got, but I was okay with that because they were yum yum yummy. Who knew that pomegranate seeds could make such an excellent taco condiment? I'm sold. Mahi Mahi tacos - also delicious, but the pork ones were tastier and more unique in my opinion. The chips were just fair and the salsa servings are small. I'd save yourself $3 on those. All in all, a solid fusion taco joint.

The combo of tacos and Groupons made for a stellar, quick dinner last night at Union Taco. I found the place to be inviting, nicely decorated, and provided fast service. We grabbed a few beers, ate some guacomole and chowed down on some fancy (somewhat overpriced tacos). I've read in some other reviews that the strawberry overpowers the guac in Union's non-traditional appetizer, but we didn't have this problem. The strawberry jam was conveniently separated, and you could mix in however much suits you. Not sure if this is a new update to the dish, but it works well. We both enjoyed it quite a bit. The oxtail tacos were well stuffed, plenty of meat and bleu cheese, but that may have been the problem. They needed a little acid or spice to counter the meat and strong cheese. The flank steak version were perfection: tender meat, fresh toppings, and a nice kick from the accompanying sauce. The pork cheek version was a pleasant surprise with the pineapple. A little hot sauce on this one gives it the perfect sweet vs. hot mix that I like. Well worth a try, particularly if you have a deal.

Beefy taco stand: The goods: Low cost beefy tacos, yep if you're a carnivore, get here! BYOT!They deliver. The meat is where the love is. Braised short rib. Pork. Chicken. The meh: A bit of a wait. Tortillas. Beans and corn appear to be from the can. What makes it a taco stand: everything is plastic and flimsy, the tables, the chairs, the baskets, the flatware, the iRegister. The rant of not so good here and beyond: Almost 90 percent of all Mexican America restaurants mess up chorizo, and so they do here. Chorizo is not scrapple, it is not bacon, it's definitely not bacon bits. In fact it's like any other sausage, a tasty grouping of scraps and stuff designed to be best left in the link to harmonize. This place has also attempted to slice the link into a sandwich but left it too chewy to eat. Attempt understood but attempt failed. Conclusion, good eats for a taco stand.

First thing first, I came here for dinner with a friend who bought a voucher on Groupon. They only take printed vouchers, which we didn't have, but the girl was nice enough to let us email it and use their printer! LOL. On to the food: I got the mahi mahi tacos which were tasty. My friend got the Union burrito with pork. The pork is delicious but the burrito lacked layers - everything was mixed together with the pork and sauce so you couldn't really taste all the other flavors. My friend wasn't impressed. We also had an order of the "award winning" strawberry habanero guacamole. It was really good, although it's more strawberry than habanero. Also, they have $2 tacos on Tuesdays from 7-10! (Chef's choice) Overall it's a nice place for a walk-in taqueria. I'd probably go back to try it again.

Only been here once and got mushroom tacos to go. The ingredients were good in concept but it didn't really meld together well, and the mushrooms weren't particularly well seasoned. Was pretty expensive for 2 tacos ($9) so for all of these reasons I have yet to go back, despite living in the neighborhood.

It is only street parking availability. The establishment is wheelchair/handicap accessible. The single stall male/female bathroom is fairly large and also wheelchair accessible. Your orders are cooked on the spot so expect a little bit of wait time for them. The Chicken Union Burrito is bursting at the seams with Chicken, sofrito rice, Pico de Gallo, corn, pepper jack cheese and avocado. It was delicious and very filling. The Cuban Sandwich is spiced just right and they don't skimp on the filling. The bread is grilled and crusty. The Pork Cheek was equally filling and spicy. I noticed a tv hanging on the side, while there are a few tables and chairs within the establishment. They priced their menu on the mid-high. In terms of their location, sometimes you should price your menu selection on the demographics of that area. Nevertheless, I would return back again and try the other menu selections.

Let me first start off by saying that the queso and chips were awesome. Nice portion and the queso was "slammin" and so were the chips. I wish I didn't order anything else, but... I ordered the Poblano Braised Chicken Tacos and was anticipating something flavorful. Unfortunately, the flavor stopped a the queso and chips. The tacos were incomplete, I didn't get, or at least I didn't see, the pickled tomatillos or the other ingredients. All I got was unseasoned chicken, a little bit of lettuce and some tasteless orange paste on flour tortillas. I needed all of the hot sauces on the table to wake up my taste buds. I really felt like I was eating boiled chicken on an Old El Paso pre-packaged tortilla. I was really hoping that I would like this place. Their menu seems creative and the place is nice. However, I was totally disappointed. And, for my infatuation with Mexican food, I couldn't believe that I said, "I will never pay full price for "this" Mexican food again in my life." Now that I see they have a Groupon, I may give them another shot because I so desperately wanted to like them. I wish them nothing but good luck, but please, for the love of tatse-buds, season your food. Hot sauce shouldn't be necessary...

tried this place for the first time last week after calling it quits at one of their competitors (shifty's). i ordered the fish tacos and man, were they good. they appear to be deep fried, panko coated tilapia or maybe snapper. the coating was EXTRA crispy and the meat inside was moist and tender. their homemade slaw was delicious and perfectly offset the fish. my only complaint is that there were only two tacos. i think three would be a better deal for $7. i returned there yesterday with a friend and again ordered the fish tacos and they were just as good as the first time. my companion ordered the mahi mahi salad and that thing was a beast. it looked awesome and she said it tasted the same. i will definitely try that next time around. so far, so good, union.

Used a Groupon for delivery only. Superb stuff! Absolutely loved the pico de gallo guacamole, although it could have been chunkier. The kobe tacos were super tasty with lots of filling, but greasy. I loved them anyway. Also had the chorizo cheese fries... delicious! Some of the best tasting fries I've ever had. The burritos were large and really stuffed with fillings. Great tasting too. The rice and black beans we ordered as sides were also delicious. I mean, I really just loved everything we had. Would eat here again in a heart beat.

I heard some great things about this place so was excited to try it. Once I did it was just ok. Store bought chips, meh guacamole.. Queso was super small portion and kind of a weird smokey flavor, not great. There are better Mexican places in the city!

Union Taco is great for some gringo-style Mexican food. Probably should be a 3.5 star since the prices are a bit expensive Worthwhile items: - Strawberry habenero guacamole - Carnitas tacos - Chicken tacos - Fish tacos (its an asian style with a soy ginger sauce) - Chorizo cheese fries

A group of us went for dinner last night. Atmosphere gets 5 stars, service gets 4, and food gets 3. Atmosphere first: small, light room, we grabbed the large bench table up front. Chalk board menus on the wall, some interesting art on the walls. Fun, laid back vibe, perfect setting for us to make our own margaritas and eat too much food. Service: Super attentive and helpful, though we're still not sure if it was table service or not. We ordered chips at the counter while we waiting for our whole party, then a waitress came by, later a waiter took our order, but to pay we had to walk to the counter. I'm sure this is just some of the opening kinks to be worked out. Food: Highlights were the chips with cheese sauce, the pork tacos (which come with 2) and the flatbread. Though the chicken on the pizza was really dry and the sun dried tomatoes felt like an after thought. The fish taco was over crisp and there was barely any fish. But do splurge on the chorizo fries! Amazing. We are excited to go back and watch union taco grow!

Terrible mexican food, on par with taco bell as far as quality. Do not order delivery it will be cold. Ive order twice from them and both times cold. Anyone who thinks this is anything more than mediocre needs to have to real mexican food cause this is not it.

I work near by the location in Manayunk and this is one of my favorite places to go for lunch. Two of my favorite things on the menu are their Traditional Tacos(maybe not the most traditional but really good), Brussel Sprouts y Chorizo and they have Jarritos sodas. The only thing that would be better is if they had a punch card for some of us that eat here regularly.

BARELY EDIBLE! Service was good. Girl that took my order was very nice & friendly. Ordered the oxtail taco, pork cheek taco, and chorizo nachos. Meat had barely any flavor and was salty (oxtail). Had to send back the nachose due to burnt tasting cheese sauce. Chef said he knew it was an older batch of sauce so he made us a new one, which was better. IVE HAD BETTER TACOS FROM A FOOD TRUCK! Had higher expectations from a new taco place in Fishtown. Maybe they're off to a rough start since they just opened, but I dont plan on coming back.

The tacos were pretty good, specifically the pork with pineapple. However, everything was a little greasier than I would have hoped for.

I read the other reviews people had posted and I really didn't want what they were saying to be true. I had already bought the Groupon, so I was going anyway. Pretty much everything that people had said was true. The meat in the tacos was dry and salty (ground Kobe) as well as greasy and tasteless (poblano braised chicken). The only reason I'm giving Union Taco three stars is the strawberry habañero guacamole, it was amazing! Their tortilla chips were very good as well. Of course it doesn't hurt to wash it all down with a Mexican Coke either. Sadly, the guacamole won't be enough to make me go back.

Fish tacos were made with what were basically fish sticks. The cabbage was brown and the fish had some kind of teriyaki sauce on it. They did not deserve to be called tacos. Cheap ingredients, horrible preparation.

Staff was friendly and tacos were awesome. While the cheso and guac were good, I didn't care too much for the chips, they seemed a little over cooked. Thinking about going back for $2 tacos on Tuesday.

I love Tacos and as a card carding member of the ACLU, I love Unions, so I thought I would love Union Taco, but sadly that was not the case, Union Taco is like all the Woody Allen movies in the 1980's, just okay something boring. The service is slow, the people are nice, and the food is okay but nothing special. The strawberry guacamole had some promise but the flavors were underdeveloped, and everything needed more flavor. If your sober pass on this place, if you drunk, head to Taco Bell

Overpriced and mediocre. Being from San Diego, I've been on the look-out for good Mexican food. After reading the description in PhilyMag, I thought that this place would be it! Sadly, it was a HUGE disappointment. I am completely okay with the fact that it is not authentic Mexican food and that the ingredients include arugula, pineapple, and caramelized onions...the flavors just didn't come together well. I had the carnitas taco and the strawberry guacamole...both seemed unusually sweet for Mexican food. I was with friends who had the steak and mahimahi tacos, which also seemed mediocre. It's unlikely that I'll be back!

Meat on the tacos was super salty. I also tried a burrito but it tasted like the threw a whole bunch of cheap taco seasoning and salt on everything. Service was nice.

  • Dee J.

I'm from Arizona, and while they aren't authentic tacos, I find the Kobe need and oxtail taco pretty damn delicious! I love tacos! And I find this place to be a great addition to the neighborhood. All the people I see giving this place 1 star.... Come on really?

  • S P.

The only reason Union gets two stars is because we did enjoy the guacamole and chips. Hubby and I used a groupon to try this spot since we love tacos and had already been to Shiftys and Taco Reindos often. On to our visit.... Placed two orders for fish tacos, only enough fish for one order, so got braised chicken instead. braised in what? Water? Chicken was tough and bland, no hint of tomatillos or anything that would add flavor, really we could not believe how awful these were. The fish taco, at least the fish was crispy, but soy ginger overpowered entire taco, house slaw was mediocre. I rarely write a bad review, but Union needs to step up their game, there was no hint of Mexican flavor or any flavors in our dinner. Really disappointing.

Just got done with my first meal from Union Taco and everything was great! The queso and chips were exactly the way I like! The chips were golden brown, and the queso was slightly spicy without being overbearing. the 'kobe' ground beef tacos were perfectly spiced and slightly greasy just like a taco should be. The chicken tacos were good, but I did put on some course black pepper and sea salt. Service was fast and everything was pretty straight forward. Overall, I'd get the same thing again and it's good to have a great new place in the neighborhood!

I got delivery here last night, it took them an hour and a half to get my food delivered. When it finally got here, the flatbread was squished and the toppings were everywhere in the box. Also, the fries were cold and soggy. I don't recommend getting the duck flatbread but the fries were okay. When I called to complain, the employee was of no help and did not know what to do. I will never order from this establishment again.

Food: my husband and I split the mushroom tacos, fish tacos, and pulled pork tacos. Each comes with 2 tacos. The mushroom tacos were our favorite (the goat cheese on top was amazing). The pork tacos were a close runner up. The tacos were great and would get them all again. Sides: the guacamole was average but there was a good amount for the price. The cheese and chips were my favorite out of the 2 and cheap. Service: the service was scattered and disorganized, but to their credit they did seat 5 tables at once when we got there. We had wine so the wait wasn't horrible.

Waited 20 mins for food. Heavily salted tortilla chips. Disgusting chicken that tasted like cream. They gave us the wrong tacos!! I don't know what to say. Worse food I've had in Philly so far.

Please up your game Union Taco, I want to like you so bad and you deliver to my work. My tacos were soggy, not moist, but soggy. My carnitas was not traditional and was more like what I consider pulled pork. The guacamole was good, but the presentation was lame.

  • Charles W.

Order for delivery and was very disappointed. Was told 20 minutes but in came in 40. Still not too bad but then the driver didn't have a pen. The Kobe beef tacos were soaked in sriracha but tasted good. It was a very messy experience though, too much meat in there. The chorizo fires were cold and pretty bland overall. The fish tacos flat out sucked. Bland greasy over fried fish stick quality fish with some weird condiments ( one red pepper slice). Hopefully the owners can fix their game and deliver some quality Mexican food (I'm a big fan of Rojos in ocean city).

Really fun place with a great staff. They were out of the tequila mixers, but the owner went and mixed up something for free that was very solid. Affordable and delicious Mexican. Great addition to Girard ave.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
