We get to the tap room maybe once every couple of months, most recently last night. I know they've gone through some menu changes, and I've been told in the past that their Nazi chef is gone. With the menu as is, they have some mighty tasty treats available at decent prices. I've had the vegan hoagie, available at $10, a few times and each time I am full with food still left on the plate. The hummus plate for $8 was just enough to fill me up, and a great consistency, paired with some roasted peppers, cucumbers, olives, and warmed pita. Also delicious is the tomato lager soup, better than your average tomato soup. It's a great choice when you have a mix of omnivores and vegetarians (or vegans). This wouldn't be a true tap room if they didn't have a great selection of beers on tap, and boy, do they. They usually have around a dozen or more beers available, and the selection ranges pretty widely, with quite a few PA options (and usually a few Michigan ones too, which I'm always happy to see). Prices of the beers are great as well, usually ranging from $4 to $6 or so for most beers on tap. And if they don't have on tap, they just might have it available in bottle, with a decent selection. Don't come here looking for the majors, though. Their selection is all about the craft beers, and that's just fine with me. The only thing I don't like is the volume. Maybe my age is starting to show, but I hate having to talk really loudly just as part of my dinner conversation. I'm not looking for quiet dining here; I'd just like to not have to constantly ask someone to repeat what they said. Oh, also, the bartender / server is just a bit too impatient (even when not that busy), and lets it show with some passive-aggressive attitude. But if

This is my neighborhood bar. Interesting viewpoint on the draught selection-- i feel like its like when you go shopping and going into certain stores is touch and go; sometimes you go, and make a kill, other times you go in and things are okay, not really enticing but not at the same time. the draught list is the same, i either recognize everything on the list and am not really intrigued, or i'll get awesomely and pleasantly surprised, like when i went in for brunch and after gazing at the list mid my first bloody mary bugged out at seeing that dogfishhead hellhound was randomly on. yessssss. but seriously. Great time every time I come; thought that way for a while, but this point stands out in my mind especially-- came in for dinner, and ordered the seasonal heirloom apple and spinach salad. i'm allergic to nuts and since they weren't listed on the menu just did not ask if nuts were present. upon the salads arrival and with closer inspection in the famous and wonderful dark atmosphere, there appeared to be nuts in the salad. Asked the server, she said she wasn't sure, and would check to see if it was nut free. Came back, said there was a nut-free one coming out, no worries, and did i mind? and she then sampled the said nut in question because she couldn't believe that there would be unlisted nuts. we later confirmed that they were actually mustard seeds. (but hey, in the dark, i'm not about to take that chance.) but the fact that she was concerned and interested in finding out what was going on food-wise for everyone was comforting. it truly felt like my neighborhood at that point. a +++ sptr. i salute you and your tomato lager soup, fantastic bloody marys, and dirty bastards.

I can't wait to come back here! I came here last Friday night with some friends before heading to the Phillies game. Because I did not know that we would be stopping here, I managed to eat a fairly large bowl of leftover Chinese food when I got home from work, and was not intending on consuming anything other than alcohol. Of course, once I saw the macaroni and cheese on the menu, I knew it was over. I had 2 pints of delicious pear cider, and luckily we left after the 2nd one, because I could've drank about 20 of them they were so good, and light and refreshing and sweet....ahhhh!!! And, sorry to Misconduct, but the Taproom has the BEST macaroni and cheese. It blows Misonduct's out of the water! It is creamy and smooth and covered with fried onion straws and perfectly sliced green onions...it is amazing. My friend wanted to try the duck hearts, and I agreed to join in on the offal fun...they were okay. They basically just tasted like a slightly gamey steak....I wouldn't eat them again, not because there was anything wrong with them, but I don't really feel the need to eat any more hearts! I also sampled some of the scallop ceviche. I'm not a big fan of scallops, but this was very light and delightfully acidic...it wasn't too much. I wish I had room to have eaten more, but the small sampling I did let me know how good and creative the food is here. I can't wait to go back and try some more!

I'm falling hard for the South Philly Taproom. There were not one, not two, but THREE stouts on tap tonight. No lie. I also ate a perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned, juicy cheeseburger. It was cozy but spacious with nice music and nice servers. What more could I ask for?! How about a delicious pickled green tomato? Done. Really, such a thoroughly satisfying experience.

WILD BOAR TACOS!!!! I want to go back just to get them again. For $10 this is a deal if you just want something fairly light for having a drinks at the bar. They also have a great beer selection on draft and I enjoyed some Allagash white. It was a decent atmosphere on a Thursday night with people constantly coming and going. My only complaint would be there are not a ton of appetizers for sharing. However, next time I am in South Philadelphia I will be stopping here for those tacos!

All in all the Taproom is great. The people who have reviewed on here who say its expensive need to look at similar establishments in the city, and then make their judgments. The price of the beer is average if not low when compared to other local beer bars. The food is good but expensive, but it's not called the South Philadelphia Food Room. The beer on tap is as good as it gets, with a different beer on cask each week. The food specials usually stay the same with a small twist. Happy hour deals are lack luster, but once again ... a nearby beer bar on east pass has beer prices sometimes $2 higher than SPTR on a normal day. I've had the fish and chips, very tasty. Mac and Cheese, tasty. Tempeh Hoagie, good but light on "meat". Duck prosciutto with *insert fruit* snack, worth the $3 just to try once. To the point: Great beer at an average price, Good food at a premium, crowd isn't nearly as hipster as other similar bars in the area.

gosh i can't stand this place. i've wanted to like this place a lot, but finally have come to the fact of the matter that i'm not a hipster and since i'm not, i'll always get awful service at this place. we always try to get a spot at the bar, and once out of i'd say five times or so we have. our presence was not happily felt. i felt like I was bothering someone to order drinks and food. ugh. if we don't get a seat at the bar, we have sat at a table or two. once we sat outside after a phillies game, and had one beer served to us the entire happy hour. a few other times we have not only waited a REALLY long time to get noticed, we once sat for almost 20 minutes before someone even knew we were there. we got up and left. usual SPTR feeling. i know everyone else likes this bar, but why is it so different for me everytime i'm there??? sheesh! its so depressing!

Beer section is good and it has a nice vibe. Still, I'm always disappointed by the food. Just ordered the vegan pizza, which sounded good but ended up soaked in olive oil and tasting like straight, raw garlic. Too bad!

The only thing that kept me from 5 -starring this is the wait staff can be downright unfriendly bodering on snotty. I try to be compassionate, but honestly - its not the customers problem if you are short-staffed or whatever causes your attitude problem...seriously I live closeby and I have been there many times --- I mgiht have had one experience with a waiter (who was male) who didn't act resentful, annoyed, or resent me if I was only ordering two drinks and a snack....(and its the same 3-5 waitresses in there all the time, so...you can spot them and see for yourself.)

The South Philly Tap Room is a little on the pricey side, but food, beer selection and staff make it OK. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable about the beers and food they serve. The beer selection is great. The menu changes periodically, which I enjoy. However, the veggie selection seems to be getting smaller as time goes on. :(

I was in Philly for the first time a long time this past weekend and I had the pleasure of gracing the South Philly Taproom with my presence. After driving from Jersey in the snow and questioning whether a street named West Passyunk exists, we finally found the SPTR on a corner in the middle of a quiet neighborhood. Walked in a got a table right near the door- I really enjoyed the vibe... dark and intimate, with candles on the tables. Awesome beer selection!! Lots of belgian beers ( I believe I got a belgian stout, which I had never tried before... yum!) as well as some local stuff. But, what I was really impressed by was the food. I mean a place could have an awesome beer selection but sucky food, but not SPTR! Everything I tried was delicious. My friend and I started off with the wild boar tacos for an appetizer, which were very good- meat was very tender and flavorful, kinda tasted like steak! For my entree I got one of the specials- trout with horseradish sauce and potato latkes. YUM YUM YUM!!!! Fish was cooked perfectly and the meal included not just the horseradish sauce but a side of greens with the horseradish sauce on top of them, which I proceeded to put on top of the fish so I could eat them together.... AMAZING. Potato latkes were extremely delicious as well!! Perfect amount of crispiness. My friends got the grilled cheese + tomato soup, burger, and pork sandwich (?) Everyone enjoyed their food. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in Philly (which will hopefully be sooner rather than later) to try more unique beers and whatever they have on their specials menu. Overall I was very very impressed.

My buddy just moved into this neighborhood recently, we stumbled across this bar a few months ago, and we don't really go anywhere else if we go out around here. The beers are awesome, and cheap! That would be enough for me, but they decided to go out and make so seriously good food. The mac and cheese is insane, pretty much everything that I have tried here has been super. In the better weather months they do a mini bar outside and it becomes a little block party, but with great beer! As a brief aside, love the logo too, what could be better for a Philly bar!!

After hearing about this place for over a year, finally found an excuse to go: Founders Friday. There's nothing like drinking usually expensive Founders beers for almost 1/2 price. Walked in at 4:30 and the place was already full. Was imressed by the draft beer selection AND the bottle list. Server was attentive throughout the evening. As the evening sped along, the place got busier and busier. Ordered the southern fried chicken wings and an order of mac and cheese. The wings were seriously great. They were crunchy and had enough of a hint of salt to make the flavor pop. The side order of collard greens were spicy and cooked quite well. The mac and cheese was delicious. Definitely going back again. I shall never have to find an excuse to have to go, I will just get off my lazy ass and go.

I really enjoy SPT. I have had a few things off the menu and have always been satisfied. The majority of the bartenders are very friendly and attentive. I don't think I even need to mention the beer list as most realize its awesome.

Review is only for the beer an not the food. But it's a great beer bar with knowledgeable waiters that let you sample beers. And it's gotten me into south philly and away from the crowds of center city.

I wish I could tell you how delicious the food is or great the beer selection is but I wasn't able to find a seat to test said products as sadly, SPTR doesn't believe in a host to seat patrons. Instead, they seemingly believe that a true dining experience is fending for yourself, hanging out in a crowded bar, and lurking over tables like a vulture. Once you're seated, nothing goes with delicious beer like someone's butt right in front of your face as the spill-over from the bar leads to people standing right in front of you. While you hurriedly choke down your food, you're given the pleasure of having people stare you down while they wonder if you are going to get moving or what? Again, I'm regretful that I was robbed this pleasurable experience. Maybe some day.

One evening, when all hell was engulfing me, an old college friend who was on her way back to Paris gave me a holla to see if I'd wanted to hang. I was like sure. She wanted to go to Monks. I told her a bus drove through the front door. So we ended up at, you guessed it, South Philly Taproom. (Sorry you weren't first) My first time there and certainly not my last. A quality beer selection that was so good looking I soon forgot about my hellish ordeal . Other than the "green" server, everything else was on. Food: So I had the roast pork sandwich with blackened jalapeno and mac and cheese. Yum! My friend had the grilled p b and j. Both were out of this world. I liked meeting up with her, we both had much to talk about. Now I have a place to stay in Paris!

This used to be my favorite bar in the city. Great food, excellent beer selection, nice atmosphere... But the service is horrible. The staff is inattentive, not friendly, and acts put out when they are serving you. Every time I try to give this place another chance, I end up leaving disappointed. Last time I came here, my wife and I walked out after waiting for about 15 mins for someone to walk over and take our drink order. No one came, it was not a busy night; the waitresses were in eyesight about 20ft away, talking at the bar.

If you want terrible service and rude wait staff and bartenders, then this is the place to come. I have never been any place where employees were more inconsiderate to the customers. As a 10 year veteran of the service industry, I have never been so embarrassed of colleagues. I can also confidently say that it was not just our opinion; several customers left with us when we walked out and several more expressed their exasperation with being treated so rudely. I will never come back here and will make sure to tell as many people as possible. If you expect to be treated with respect, do not go here!

  • Lauren D.

I'm still keeping the 4-star rating, but only because the food and the service have switched roles. I come here a fair amount, mostly because it's kind of like my default first-date place and it's nice to get out of the whole Passyunk routine of gastropubs. The food here is always consistently good and improves with each menu change. I'm a huge fan of their open-faced turkey thing with mashed potatoes, and their tomato-lager soup remains to be the only tomato soup that I'll allow in my body. The gooey grilled chese that accompanies it doesn't hold a candle to Royal Tavern's but is still divine. Last night, though, I had quite possibly the best thing that I've ever eaten there: grilled brussel sprouts served with thick-cut bacon and an apple vinaigrette. Oh geez, I was seriously in heaven. Brussel sprouts are my favorite vegetable and the bacon was just crisp enough but not overly so and the apple vinaigrette provided a sweet balance to the rest of the dish. It was a special of the evening but if SPTR added this to the menu I would probably pitch a tent outside of the restaurant so I could eat it every day without having to commute to the bar. Oh, and the Mexican turkey soup was really good and tasty without being heavy. Full of yummy vegetables, too. I still have my qualms about their beer pours to price ratio but that's still just a me thing. Plus, Dogfish Head's World Wide Stout was on tap next to Pliny the Elder AND Mad Elf...with a tap selection involving those beers I'll just sit there pretty and shut up. Service though? Ugh, I don't know how the staff charmed their way into a job because it's gone WAY down hill. There's one server who consistently looks miserable and like she's about to cry, another who is all cute and peppy with her co-workers but looks annoyed as soon as she comes to your table, and ALL the servers seem to forget that checking on your tables more than once a night is part of the job. I really don't get it - it's not that hard. But I love the food and beers enough that I'll deal with shoddy service just like rest of you all so I suppose they can get away with it.

Been to SPT a few times, but only once to sit down and eat. Excellent and extenstive beer selection. Kept hearing they have a new chef and decided to check it out. We had the chicken wings and boar tacos for the apps. I'm not a wing person since I hate hot sauce but these wings were amazing!!! Actually, we were more impressed with the apps than the rest of the meal. My dining companion had the chicken sandwich which he did not care for. We were intrigued by the fried pb&j dessert, which sounds like a stoner's dream, so please follow up with some feedback! Lots, LOADS, of hipsters but in a cool, laid back atomsphere. A neighborhood gem that has inspired some imiatators and a coffee shop across the street.

One of my favorite bars in Philly. I live in the suburbs (about 20 minutes south of here) and still make a trip to the Tap Room once or twice a week anymore. The rotating tap selection always impresses me with something new and flavorful. The menu has changed (yet again) and is pretty damn awesome. I have never had Mac & Cheese like this, and it's relatively cheap. I haven't had it but my friends keep going back for some Meatloaf which they claim is out of this world (looks incredible too). The staff is great. They've tried the food and the beer and know what is good. They're pretty friendly as well. If you're looking to go out and drink a Coors or Miller lite, this isn't your spot. But if you want good beer, good food and a cool environment, I recommend the SPTR.

this place has one of the dopest happy hours in philly. half off a list of small eats i'd put up against any bars AND half off local drafts. while i wish they did half off all beers, they still got the hand pump that poured me the best victory hopdevil (which is nothing special under ordinary circumstances) and a nitro tap. their appetizers are reliable and the shit. the service is laisser-faire. if you are a needy customer, you should probably go somewhere else. came here the other day to try out the rest of the menu for a change. i ordered the vegan hoagie with marinated mushrooms and soy mayo. off the charts delicious. got an inoffensive side of mac n cheese that was subpar to stouffers - didn't have much to say at all. except for some deep fried shallot slices on top. yum. salads looked skimpy. burger was tasty but meh. do yourself good, stick to the happy hour, 4 - 6/M - F

Superbowl Sunday was a gloriously warm and sunny day so my friend Eric and I rode our bikes from West Philly to SPTR for a couple of nice beers and some food. I checked their website to see what was on tap and their list said they had PBC "Joe" Porter and Founder's Breakfast Stout but those beers were actually not on tap when we got there. It being around 1:30, I was looking forward to the coffee porter or breakfast stout but, alas, I had to make another choice. I went with the Lagunitas Brown Shugga, a strong, very sweet but lovely cask ale. To eat I had the Blueberry Cornmeal pancakes w/bacon which were unexpectedly delicious. The cornmeal provided a satisfying crunch and the bacon was very tasty, a little crunchy without being burnt. After the Lagunitas I had an Avery Reverend, 10% and 6 oz. which was plenty. Very strong beer, more alcohol taste than the Lagunitas which was 9.9% according to the beer menu, but nice nonetheless. I like this place a lot, and it's not too far from west philly, especially if you take Grey's Ferry, although some are intimidated by that bridge on a bike, understandably so. Hope to be back in again soon to try some of the other menu items now that they've changed chefs.

A local spot with delicious Inspired dishes with fresh local ingredients and reasonable prices and BEER! Had a great dinner here- ordered the cheesesteak sliders for app, grilled bluefish and my boyfriend had the grilled cheese and tomato soup (he claimed it the best ever). We will definitely be back!

The tap room use to be a great place to go. A few years ago I would have given it 5 stars without a second thought. These days it's a last option for the days we when are too lazy to travel for something better. The menu has gone from extreme and controversial (days of lion) to short and so boring its hard to find something worth ordering. I'm ok with the menu being short, but if you can't keep that little in stock and cooked correctly there is a real problem in the kitchen. The staff is never friendly these days. Everyone seems angry and bothered by everything especially customers. I'm sorry, but if I want someone to be annoyed at my requests for service I'll go to my mom's house. I'm not a fan of paying good money for eye roles and a snotty attitude. The beer list is just about the only good thing about the place. They seem to still be bringing in new choices all the time. It might just be my luck, but I usually have to switch my drink during the evening when they run out. Unfortunately for the Tap Room these days I can find a similar list of beer just about anywhere. Nothing special going on here. Some days are better then others, but when I go out I want to have a nice time.

I've been here a couple times and it's just okay. The Wild Boar Tacos are pretty good and the specials they run are decent. I had the New Jersey Bluefish last time and it was excellent and my hubby had the pork sandwich that looked pretty good, as well. I guess it's the atmosphere and service that brought this place down. The servers seemed nonchalant and disorganized on the latest visit, but the beer list is good and the food is good and that's what counts, right? At least I save money on an exceptional tip.

Vegan Hoagie with a side of mac and cheese is both an oxymoron and a must. Brunch burger is the perfect hangover cure, I mean, isn't anything dipped in hollandaise improved upon?

I spent the entire heat-wave-esque St Patrick's Day afternoon seated outdoors here, with good food (the wild boar tacos were meal-licious even though billed as appetizers), good drinks (I don't remember what it was besides that it was beer, and when is beer bad?), and good conversation. As such it deserves a special place in my heart.

My hubby and I came here for dinner and we both ordered burgers and fries. The food was okay. We ordered apple cider on tap, which was actually pretty good. The ambience was casual and inviting, and I look forward to a return visit, but I'll be sure to order something different.

I've been here once and they have expanded the place. I was surprised to see the back area upgraded. You can peek into the kitchen! I went here last night (Monday night) with my boyfriend around 7-8ish. It wasn't busy. The servers were around us constantly which is good but also made me feel like we were in their way (despite telling us to "take our time", just made me feel uncomfortable). Or that they needed stuff to do. They were friendly and attentive. They immediately cleaned up when my boyfriend knocked over his beer reaching for it. The menu is small and a lot more fancier than I would expect of a bar. I ordered the pirate roll (shrimp, lobster, avocado) which was an amazing $12 and came with chips. The roll was pretty small, like coaster size, while the filling went about 2 inches over the bread. It wasn't messy, though, I managed. I normally just order fries or chicken fingers, you know? But whatever, it was tasty. My boyfriend ordered the duck wrap which was also pretty good. I had water and a long island iced tea to drink. The alcohol was nice and strong. The seating is outdoor (with an umbrella), at the bar, a bench with tables opposite the bar, high tables, shorter tables, and a little raised area with more tables near the kitchen and to the right of the bar. We were seated on the high tables, which I'm not a fan of but is no big deal. The ladies room is very small. I'm a small skinny girl so this was no problem, but I was really surprised at how tight it seemed. This wouldn't be my first choice if I had to pick a bar because of the pricey menu, but it does have a nice atmosphere and the staff is great.

Everyone is familiar with healthy peer pressure. I have a similar relationship to South Philadelphia TapRoom except it's healthy. If there is a modicum of possibility for going, I will wholeheartedly say yes. I just love this place, any time of the day, week, year.

Let me make this absolutely clear, as to protect the innocent: Mom, I love you. And I L-O-V-E your homemade macaroni 'n cheese. And to the SPTR chef who makes his/her own version of the splendorous dish, I simultaneously love and hate you for it. It's way too delicious for its own good, and you've forced me to question my beloved mother's number 1 status for mac 'n cheese. You really should be ashamed of yourself. I'll be back for more. SPTR has an admirable array of draught beers, not all to my particular liking, but definitely hitting all the marks for variety of pales, lagers, barley wines and stouts. There's something for everyone. Unless you're a person who doesn't like beer. Or decent mac 'n cheese. Or good hearty food of any kind. Then you wouldn't be coming to a place called a Tap Room to begin with, would you?

My husband and I stopped by this quaint little bar tonight (Friday) and we loved it. The walls were exposed brick and the wait staff was great. The menu is limited, but the food we had was excellent. My husband had a 'white fish' which he said was wonderful. I had the Bourbon BBQ salmon sandwhich - it was great! We had a couple of drinks and found out way home ! We'll definitely be going back to this neighborhood tap room!

We go here sometimes to get a bite to eat cuz neither one of us are interested in making any dinner and we don't feel like going to a fancy dinner just cuz we're hungry. I am always slightly disappointed by the selection here and usually just settle for the 100% local grass fed beef, american cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato and secret sauce. The burger is usually just okay. I usually start with their chopped salad which has avocado, red onion, tomatoes, hard boiled egg and a choice of red wine vinaigrette, or buttermilk blue cheese, which was very good. I'm also not a drinker and usually settle for a cider so i can't really comment on the draft selection. It appears to have a really good vibe and they do tend to have fun events here, we had come one evening when they were having a fall festival which seemed like a good time, though i could tell from the kitchen staff running back and forth that the kitchen or the prep area for the kitchen is located in the basement of the establishment which the only access to is coming into the dining room and around to the staircase. i'm sure that the kitchen staff would appreciate access from the kitchen area however that is another story. The service is friendly though which perhaps is their only saving grace with me. Everyone is down to earth and everyone seems like they enjoy the drought selection, at least my husband seems to.

Great vibe to this place - the decor is spot on (not overly kitschy, but fun), the music is perfect background, not like the constant Michael Jackson/Bon Jovi/Journey bar mix I'm so sick of hearing. I especially love the service here - its just what I want - servers willing to chat you up like a friend. Maria and Renata - you're sweethearts. Laura Lee is a total character, and always has the man and I cracking up with some silly dance or story. Just the kind of environment I want when I need to kick back a few and relax. Food is quite tasty, and brunch is great. I did get a beet salad once that was so covered in kosher salt that it angered me, but I guess you can't win them all. Boar tacos rock my world. Oh, and the mac and cheese here is so good... they top it with shaved scallions and little fried onion slivers. Heart.

Wild boar tacos are excellent. Dinner crew also enjoyed 'real' Maryland crab cakes, open faced roast beef sandwich, ribeye sliders, and excellent burger with 'secret' sauce. Beer selection is deep and unique, although not served ice cold.

I love this bar. I've been going to the Tap Room since the days of Temple Tuesdays for the Quizzo and $2 lagers. The place has definately changed since then. It used to be GOOD BEER, cheap delish bar food, small space, and cool people. Then suddenly quizzo was gone. Then the cheap basic food. The wall was knocked down for the bigger dining room. But while taps rotate constantly, they've never wavered on the quality of beer. I'm not gonna complain about the newer, pricey menu...cause I love it. I really do. Those boar tacos, especially during happy hour when they're half price, are out-freakin-standing. And there's just something about that grilled cheese. yummy. The tap room also hold one of my favorite summer events...The Wheat Beer Fest. An all day homage to drinkin the wheaties. I wish this was more than just once a year.

It took me a while to decide but I think this is my favorite Gastropub in the city. They consistently have great choices on tap. I've been here a few times now on a Friday/Saturday night and I always had a great time. Its my favorite kind of place, busy enough to not feel weird but not too crowded as to make grabbing a beer or having a conversation too difficult. I really like the music on the jukebox which is a must for me, when I came for lunch last week it was all Booker T & The Meters. I've only eaten here once but food was excellent. All around this place has better food, music, and beer than the majority of the other gastropubs in the city. I love this place, now if they could only move it closer to where I live.

Holy fried chicken and cornbread heaven. After taking a bite of the huge piece of cornbread that came with four generous sized portions of crispy, perfectly seasoned pieces of fried chicken, my boyfriend declared that "this is the best cornbread I have ever had." After he said that, I pounced on it and tried to shove as much as possible in my mouth. He was right. It was moist (I HATE that word but that's the only way to describe it), full of flavor and had a bit of a kick. I also tried a bite of my friend's burger (delicious) and some fried pickles (also delicious). I love the atmosphere here - dark, warm, inviting, and a good amount of outdoor seating. I am told that brunch is just as good as dinner...I will be back for the cornbread.

The food, atmosphere, and beer are all top-notch. Wish the happy hour was a little later, but that's my only complaint.

SPTR has a great beer list that changes with the season, friendly waiters and bar tenders, and Mac and Cheese that is pretty much to die for. (Their Fried Chicken is also killer.) On weekends it gets crowded and a little overwhelming, but it's definitely one of my favorite weeknight hangout spots.

We just enjoyed the chocolate pretzel covered frozen banana and you cannot get that in San Francisco! The beers were somewhat local and somewhat from hella far. The pasta salad was not amaZing but the pork sandwich was OK according to my carnivore friends.

Easily one of my favorite gastro pubs in the city. Southern Fried chicken wings with collard greens are unreal! Draft selection is a mile long. The staff is decent if your from the hood, buy maybe a little brash for out of towners. Regardless it's easily the best stop in the city to make before a summer Phils game. I found their happy hour information on Philly2night.com

SPTR changes every time I come to Philly, with a different chef, a different menu. Regardless, I've always enjoyed the food, the selection of beers, the music, and the company. I love the local neighborhood vibe and it's a relaxed, low maintenance place for eating, drinking, and socializing.

SPTR tries to be different, but in the end it is really just a gastro with beer and angry service staff. Been here many times and although the food tastes good, I have been sick twice on it and do not eat there anymore. The beer selection is great, but again, for a place that has been around long enough to work out the kinks, the service is brutal and comes with a free snarl. The problem is, how do you enjoy great beer, when your server acts like you being there is putting them out? The overall vibe at this point is, rock-a-hipster-billy-bike-tattoo-like-meets-College and with that, often comes an attitude as well. I will say this, when it first opened, it was fun, but not anymore. Not a bad place to meet friends for a quick Happy Hour, as long as you don't mind crappy service. There are better options out there for sure, like Devils Den or the Royal Tavern.

This place is cozy and small. My boy and I went there on a weeknight. Not being much of an adventurous beer drinker, I just had Kenzinger while my boy got some crazy beer, but they had a decent variety on tap. We say at the bar and the bartender was very attentive to us, but we were still able to converse with relative privacy. WE started with the wild boar tacos, which were very good but nothing that most people couldn't make at home. I ordered a special for dinner - trout on a salad and it was great. The fish was perfectly done and the salad has just enough fixins to make it unique without clashing tastes to the palate. My boy had a barbequed pork or chicken sandwhich (i forget) which he said was ok. His main complaint was that the cole slaw on the sandwhich was too tangy to the point that it overpowered the flavor of the meat. Overall I would eat here again and just order things that sound solid and not too experimental for the sake of being experimental in their flavor combos.

One of my favorite places for bar food in Philadelphia, but don't expect cheese fries and nachos here, the food at this place is even better than its beer list - which is also incredible. The roast pork sandwich is huge and a personal favorite, the fries and long hot peppers that come with it are a great side. I have also had the burger, which is also a very solid choice. The wait staff is always friendly and helpful when it comes to picking a choice draft, the patrons tend to be more of the hipster crowd (no offense to anyone) - this place has a great vibe. Don't be fooled by the neighborhood, I brought friends from CT to this place and is blew expectations away.

I used to reside in South Philly and a piece of my heart forever belongs there. One of the perks was that I was located on the exact opposite corner that the Taproom was located, meaning I walked out of the apartment made 2 rights and I can stumble to and from the best hidden gems in South Philly. The beer selection has a good selection of domestic stouts and IPAs that rotated frequently. Many from PA and NY. Enjoy the Lancaster Milk Stout. The crowd is of the hipster variety and the jukebox is fantastic - (Radiohead, yeah yeah yeahs, vampire weekend, etc.) Unfortunately, what's lacking is the food and this equals minus one star. The fries are often soggy, some of the wings are acceptable but mostly sub par, also soggy. Everything other menu item was so-so, even the Poutine which I was extremely excited about but sogginess sucks. But for a great night out with a good beer atmosphere and beer selection this place is chill.

THE TAP ROOM IS BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER!! A few months ago, I wrote a scathing review of the SPTR, replacing my original shining review of this quaint neighborhood bar. I have been a loyal SPTR customer since 2006. I would frequent the Tap Room at least once-twice per week when the old chef was there. The original SPTR featured a delicious menu full of "bar food" that appealed to all walks of life -- both vegetarian and carnivore. The service was the best in town and the beer menu was incredible. The best part about the Tap Room is that it didn't cater to any one particular scene. As long as you liked beer, food, and good company you were welcome at the SPTR. Then something awful happened --- The SPTR hired a new chef that has delusions of grandeur and cooked like he was cooking for some hoity-toity five-star Center City eatery. Not to mention that he flipped the original menu upside down, adding too many meat-based dishes. The most appalling of this switch was that at one point, he added lion to the menu. LION. Why? Not only is this incredibly cruel but it's also incredibly ridiculous and unnecessary. The same time that this happened, the service got much worse. It got so bad that my friends --- also former fellow SPTR regulars --- and I boycotted the SPTR for almost a whole year. Only a few weekends ago, my friends and I were hanging out and looking for a place to drink, but we didn't want to go far from home. We decided to just suck it up and go to the SPTR. After all, we only wanted a beer or two. When we sat down at our table and the menu was presented, we noticed that the menu was yet again --- completely different and revised --- but in a GOOD WAY! Returned were the delicious staples that the SPTR was known and loved for and added were some new dishes, like the meatloaf and mac n' cheese that my husband ordered and was hands down the best meatloaf I have ever eaten. The staff was yet again happy to serve us, and they were as quick as lightning. THE SPTR IS BACK... AND SO IS MY FIVE-STAR RATING!!!

The Tap Room used to be awesome. Back when the prices were reasonable, the beer list had quirky (yet accurate) descriptions, and the owner cared more about supporting the neighborhood than stuffing wads of cash into his pockets. The food is uninspired and routine. The salads are downright disgusting. The waitstaff is moody and usually pretty slow. The only reason the Tap Room is busy is because its the only bar in the neighborhood. I recommend passing on this joint. Walk a few extra blocks and you can find plenty of other places worth spending your hard earned cash at.

I like this place. A beer drinkers bar. No apparent scene. Just lots of good beers and a nice little rotating menu. Fries are big and fat and real real good. I'm getting tired of those little "Belgian" Style shoestringers a lot of places are doing. Big fat steak fries are where its at this year. Had lunch there today and got a sample of Ommegang's Inauguration Ale "Obamagang" what a strong dark Belgian style that is. Got a nice little conversation about whats going to be going on for Beer Week. I dig the place, and if it was a tiny bit closer I'd be there more often. Some things are a little pricey though. But if you wanna drink the best stuff you are gonna have to pay for it.

I went here with a friend to get over my shitty Thanksgiving holiday. Being the weekend of a holiday, the place was quiet. I tried the Mom's Meatloaf which came with Mac and Cheese. The portions are generous to say the least. I'm a beer fan and enjoyed the offerings they had on tap. They have a good selection of your regular favorites and things off the beaten path. I would definitely go back and think the SPTR is probably good for groups of folks looking to get together. I also like that the staff seems relatively unpretentious. I especially enjoyed our waitress' amusing stories of the the whole chef saga.

I don't drink and I think the Tap Room is great. The food is awesome, the jukebox is sweet, the staff is nice and the atmosphere is friendly. I live within walking distance of SPTR and whenever friends come to visit we take them there and they love it. ps The Monster Grilled Cheese Sandwich is of my favorite items on the menu.

I realize this is a bar and I should comment on beer, atmosphere, or something of the like, but really I just love their 3 cheese grilled cheese, tomato soup, and mac and cheese. You say, what's so great about it? The grilled cheese is perfectly cheesy with a size of butter. The tomato soup is the perfect tangy to cut the grease, but complement the cheese. And the mac and cheese...oh the mac and cheese. They add green onions to it and perfect. I say try it. It's worth the hike.

Better than your average bar food, and has a really impressive beer list. The inside reminded me a cross between Royal Tavern and Devil's Den. I had the mac n cheese, steak fries, and some hoppy beer week special that was recommended by our helpful waiter. All were really good, and I will def be back here again.

I was a little bit let down on my first trip to SPTR, but plan on returning to hopefully improve on my first impression. On a fiercely cold Saturday afternoon I made my way here for lunch and a few drinks with a friend. Upon sitting down I was greeted with a beer list which led me to order the Ballast Point Big Eye IPA. Great beer. After about an hour of talking and relaxing at the bar with my friend, I ordered the grilled cheese. I love grilled cheese and actually made a point of coming on this Saturday to get this exact meal after reading a food/beer blog about the grilled cheese at South Philadelphia Taproom. It came out of the kitchen and was placed before me and wow, it looked good. The tomato lager soup that accompanied the sandwich was a chunky vegetable style tomato soup which was very good, although I'm partial to a creamy style tomato soup. The grilled cheese was, well, pretty blah. Not sure what the 3 cheese were, but none of them seemed to really bite with flavor and the bread that the sandwich was on was pretty much just heavily buttered texas style toast which isn't really something that appeals to me. I'm not telling you not to get this sandwich, I'm not telling you it wasn't a good sandwich, i'm just telling you it was kinda blah. I'll be sure to update this, but next time I'll be trying something different and probably won't be getting the grilled cheese again.

Having finally ventured down to the Taproom, after living around the corner for a couple years, I've now been back twice in the same week. Food is delicious, great atmosphere, phenomenal beer list...and my first trip landed me on LeftHanded arm wrestling night. Hysterical. Brunch is also great. Might I recommend the blueberry cornbread pancakes with bacon, and the bloody mary's which were also delicious though a bit spicy.

I had the breakfast burger....Hit the spot. More options as to brunch would have been appreciated, but the problem was that I had had eggs beforehand. Didn't want to double down on the eggie weggies. I liked sitting outside. My beer was beer.

The mac and cheese made the table swoon and the southern fried wings were crispy little things. Taproom is a gem of a bar in South Philly. The place was crowded even in the midst of the snowmageddon, but they have 2 rooms spacious enough for larger groups. On top of that, the happy hour specials are 1/2 price apps and local drafts, but prices are not too bad, so you won't feel guilty staying late. Our waitress had some 'tude, but maybe it was the night. The rest of the staff was great. Check it out if you're lost or found in souf filly.

Every time I have been to this bar I have had a good experience. The table service is efficient, the special events (especially the "wheaties" wheat beer fest) are well run and the food is excellent. I've had several great meals here. Plus, the beer on tap is always impressive. This is one of the few "destination" pubs in the city. If you like good beer and good food it is worth driving or taking the subway here even if you don't live nearby. There is also something to be said of the owners version of urban renewal, buying a bar in a rough neighborhood and hoping people will move in and clean things up. So far it is working even if it is slow.

This is my boyfriend & my go-to place. When we can't come up with a creative new place to go, we almost always end up here. Some seasonal menus have been better than others, but as vegetarians we always have at least two options to choose from. Oh, and the beer list is divine.

Two words: Homemade Ketchup. I don't even like ketchup that much but this was tasty. Plus I have to think if a restaurant or bar or taproom or whatever is making their own ketchup then they are putting some serious lovin' into all of their food. I wanted brunch but I didn't get out of bed and out of the house early enough today to indulge in it so we opted to try a new place and ended up at SPTR. I'm glad we did. I got the Vegan Hoagie, which boasts tempeh, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, onion and vegan mayo on a nice crisp on the outside/soft of the inside hoagie roll. It came with these amazing steak cut fries that were thin and crisp and just perfection as well as the aforementioned homemade ketchup. The tempeh had a nice fresh lemony flavor to it. Yum. My husband got the 3 Cheese Grilled Cheese Sandwich with the Tomato Lager Soup. My goodness that soup is tasty. He also gave me a chunk of melty cheese and I tossed it onto my sandwich. It was yummy but my sandwich really did not need cheese, and that is a big compliment from me. I do wish the sandwiches came with pickles. That's always a plus in my book. You can order a side of homemade pickles for $3 but I didn't. I think I will order them next time for a table sharing item. I also had a beer and I don't really like beer that much so the fact that I could find a beer that I wanted, a raspberry reserve. My husband has turned into a beer snob as of late and he also enjoyed the selection. Service was average and the food came out fast. The bathroom doors are rad and adorned with silhouettes of a man and a woman. I like the overall style/decor that includes lots of dark wood. They also have a jukebox and I heard The Pixies while we were eating so it must be a pretty good one. One day I will arise before noon and get my ass there for some brunch, one day.

Great food! I had the southern fried chicken wings and the steak fries I love the fact that the chicken came with a side of greens and that the steak fries came with homemade ketchup. Love it !!! The atmosphere was also workable (for a bar lol) would def recommend

The South Philadelphia Tap Room, west of Broad Street, just south of Center City, is one of the best bar/restaurants I've been to in a while. The beer selection is fantastic (and they are licensed to sell for carryout) and the food is really well done. My favorite thing on their menu so far is the Wild Boar Burrito. The meat is cooked to a satisfying shred, is well seasoned and the burrito is served with a side of salad. The plantain nachos are a clever spin on that traditional dish and the standard burger is piled-high winner. They are currently in the process of expanding the bar to include a dining room next door which will be a nice addition, as it can get very crowded in their at peak times.

If you are looking for a good stop while bar hopping South Philly, the Tap Room is the place to be. Great service by a friendly staff. A nice list of beers on tap and the food is amazing. I recommend the Wild Boar tacos. Although, you only get two, they are absolutely delicious.

I used to be there almost everyday before I moved. The beer selection is fantastic. The food used to be some of my favorite in the area, it seems to have gone down hill some what over the last year. It's still good, but not as good as it was before. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is great.

Just for starters... I was about to only give 4 stars to the SPTR, but decided that since it's so close to where I live, it deserved that extra bump to 5. Having lived in and just about all around Philly for just about 13 years now, the South Philly Taproom is one of the very few places that I've wanted to become a "regular" at. Currently, I'm probably just a few visits under that "regular" status, namely because sometimes the idea to go there pops into my head but then I end up being to lazy to just go! That said, I've (personally) yet to have a bad experience there. Be it the pleasant and knowledgeable service, the savory and fairly eclectic menu items, the general atmosphere or the combination of those three things...it's hard to not enjoy your visit there. Their draught selection is always top-notch and changes just often enough to keep you coming back for what's new. They've also got a great bottle selection as well, but let's face it...you're there for what's on tap, that's why it's the "Taproom"! But seeing as you're there to drink, it's also nice that they've got some great food to keep your belly full and to help absorb all that yummy alcohol! Their Dry Rubbed Rib Eye Cheesesteak Sliders are mouthwatering. The 3 Cheese Grilled Cheese (with a cup of their Tomato Lager Soup) is incredibly tasty and a fall/winter favorite of mine (probably spring/summer favorite too, I just haven't ordered it around then just yet). The 100% Local Grass-Fed Beef Cheeseburger is probably one of the most underrated burgers in the whole city...excellent in it's simplicity! Recently, I've tried the Porter Braised Short Ribs sandwich and it was nothing short of amazing. Their sides, specifically their mac & cheese and dish of pickles are all great as well. I will admit that I'd like to see more and better from their dessert menu though. Three dessert items at any given time is just not enough. And for brunch, I cannot pass up their Steak and Eggs Benedict! So again...combination of good service, tasty food, nice atmosphere (and location) all add up to a great spot!

The wild boar tacos are the best! Service is extremely friendly. It's got a hipstery/rockabilly edge to it but not to where it hits you over the head with outcast snobbery. Those days are over in most places anyway. It's a beatnick place with the begining element of inviting and refined sophistication that is now prevailing in the Passyunk East/Newbold neighborhoods south of Washington Ave. It's a nice investment for a good time and I think the owners know that too.

This place always has an incredible beer selection every time you go in there. The food is great as well as the atmosphere. The staff is always top notch. They combine sarcasm with knowledge of the beer they serve. They always have some kind of super rare beer at a very reasonable price. Make the trip down to deep South Philly to come here.

chintzy watercress salad--what a shame! because everything else we got was, well, actually everything else was pretty weak, too. i thought this place was supposed to be like, good er something? A+ for T. Rex on the jukebox, though.

I know I just wrote a review like two days ago, but I went back here last night and finally tried some of the food. Had an excellent dinner here last night. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer, which is described as grilled. It came to us in a lovely salad and was perfect for 2 people to share. Next I got the special which also had octopus in it, but I have to say that the texture was slightly disgusting at first, because of all the tentacles. I got over it pretty quickly but I think I liked the grilled calamari salad better. I ended my night by ordering the "pot brownie", which comes with a fried banana. That was soooooooo good. I got pregnant with a food baby from it. And 3 people shared that one. We had a great time, and I can't wait to come back for brunch. Although I do have to say, our server was easily distracted and kept floating away in the middle of sentences.

Up and down with this place, and right now it is up. I had the soft shell crab tacos, and they were filling and delicious. My friend had the fish and chips and that is always sub par. The fish has a weird taste to it, so you end up dowsing it in the malt vinegar. It is like a fish sticks taste... blegh. At least the beer selection is awesome always. Can't screw that one up to much!

Food is good, great draft list, awesome rotating short cocktail list. The best part is probably the servers. All very food/beer knowledgable and there's hardly any turnover, they've all been there for years and seem like a little family. Awesome, awesome neighborhood spot.

Had a chance to go here with a group of friends last weekend and I enjoyed this bar. The place was packed, but we were able to get a table in less than 10 minutes. Our waitress was extremely nice and answered all of our questions. The draft list had many great beers on it, and the food was freakin' delicious. I ordered Mac N Cheese and with jalapenos, as well as breadcrumbs on top, made that dish awesome! I will love to return here for a drink and some food.

This place was pretty great. I'm a picky eater so there wasn't much on the menu for me but I chose a burger and it was delicious. The restaurant is pretty dark. Looked like a fun place to go with friends on the weekend. Id go back.

Totally impressed by the menu. I came for the beer selection but I'm blown away by the totally-not-bar-food menu. I'm starting with Marinated Octopus on Wheat with pickled celery. I'm not sure where I'll go from there. Maybe a kale and apple salad or a wild boar taco. The beer, the reason I came, is amazing. It's a fresh from the cask, served at room temp, Belgian IPA DRY-hopped with ginger from Flying Dog Racing. The ginger is subtle and the hops are perfect.

This is a solid brunch and dinner spot. If you like royal tavern you should definitely visit SPTR. The space has a saloon vibe, beer at reasonable prices, and interesting beer cocktails. So far my favorite dish was the tomato lager soup, but I have enjoyed everything that I've had so far. Meats are always juicy, vegetables are savory. Most dishes come with expertly pickled vegetables including green tomatoes and cauliflower. There's plentiful seating, and the service is top notch. The neighborhood feels safe, so get over your neighborhood aversion and check this spot out.

In order to get 5 Stars, I have to make spontaneous "happy food noises". Check that YES for almost everything I tasted!!! Tempe Reuben: Mmmmmmmmm! Spicy Coconut Creamed Collard Greens: Mmmmmmmmmmm! Green Tomato Pickles: mmmmm! Other pickles: mmmmm! Cheeseburger: Mmmmmmmmm! Crab and Asparagus Dip: very Delicious. But no noises. Fried PB&J: Mmmmmm! Everything else: deserving of 5 stars.

I like this place a lot. It's like the clientele from the P.O.P.E grew up, got jobs, had kids but still needed a decent pub. The food is innovative without being considered strange. The service was really good too. The bar and beer list are also on point. There is tons of seating as well. If you're in south philly, looking for a good pub and some some food, but without all the crazy yahoos, this is probably a good bet. Good for a date, groups of friends, or hell, take your parents there.

Great food here and a lot of beers. Burger here is great. Juicy, well cooked, and well seasoned meat with thick, fatty, crisp bacon. Yum. Wild boar tacos were great too and very meaty. I liked the fried onions they topped on the Mac and cheese. Service was good. Will definitely return

Best overall dining experience I have had for quite some time! We just met friends here for the first time this past Friday. This is a favorite spot of theirs. The atmosphere was very comfortable - we had a window seat in the back room. I've worked in restaurants for years and quickly noticed how impeccable our service was. I wish I caught our servers name so I could compliment him here ! Our water was always full, beers came out quickly and were offered before the previous glasses were empty. We had 3 courses consisting of apps, entrees and dessert. The table was cleaned and new plates, napkins and silverware were brought out for each new course. The food was also fantastic ! I especially loved the Mac and cheese, tomato soup with mini grilled cheese and the chocolate panna cotta ! We will definitely be back !

Perhaps I came with the wrong set of expectations. For a gastropub, I was hoping that it would deliver on friendly service and "high-end" drinks and food. I personally think despite all the positive reviews, SPTP delivered on 1.5 of those goals which gives it a 3-rating. Our waiter was friendly and quick - providing just the right balance of giving us time and space to enjoy and not making us wait impatiently to check in. The beers were affordable and very refreshing - I got a summer shandy, and for a beer noob, I really enjoyed it. Now the food told a different story. I guess the menu descriptions threw us a curve ball, I expected to be salivating over our food, and I sure was when our plates came out...but not when I took a bite. We ordered a starter pork cutlet ($11) to accompany a BBQ chicken sandwich ($11). A starter for that price, I was expecting to be gourmet. The pork was significant...significantly disappointing - overcooked, super dry, and bland. If it didn't include a nicely dressed cucumber and watercress salad, it would have been too unappetizing to swallow. The chicken was tender, but didn't seem to be marinated or seasoned deeply enough so without the bbq sauce, it lacked flavor. The highlight of my lunch was the crispy fries and homemade ketchup. I would have gotten a few sides of the fries for my meal in lieu of the app and sandwich. Next time, I'll get more sides or more drinks to fill me up.

Location and size of the restaurant remind me of a neighborhood dive, but SPTR is far from it. First things first, I loved sitting outside on a summer night. The neighborhood is fairly quiet and unless it's a crazy busy weekend night, there is usually seating outside. I had the thyme lemonade, which I really enjoyed. If you like citrus vodka and something refreshing, this ones for you. My friends had the spicy margarita which you can't go wrong with either. For starters, 3 of us shared the shrimp ceviche. I recommend it! Great blend of spices and served with house made plantain chips! Mmmm. We also each had a head cheese taco which is pretty tiny. The size of one nacho actually but delicious! For entrees we all had the flank steak with Farro! We saw it on their Instagram and it tasted even better than I expected it would. Fairly healthy, as well! Will definitely be Back. Heard the burger is amazing!

Good. I had the cheeseburger, which was good, and split the fried PB&J for dessert, which didn't really impress me. Our waitress was great. My husband and I argue over which is best: SPTR or Sidecar. He likes this better. (I disagree.)

Cozy ambiance and amazing food but no parking. Staff was very personable. Food was timely. It was a weeknight and not too busy. Check out my pics for details on the food:)

This bar is on to something. Great food? Check. Good beers? Check. Super hot inside during the summer? Check. You'll come for the food & beer, but you won't linger because you're gonna go and try and find a cooler place. Those sneaky bastards. We split the peanut butter and jelly dessert that everyone raves about and they're right-- that schznit it delicious. It's like it's breaded and is like it's toasted perfectly. Also had the chocolate panna cotta which was also downright scrumptious.

You know... taste is important yet so is service.... Enter a large party Sunday morning for brunch.... May I point out this place might be better for lunch or dinner. They have a great draft list and yes their tomato lager soup is to die for. I tried their deep fried bread pudding french toast, which was yummy, yet the sausage it came with was very tough, and left me with indigestion for the entire day. Another gripe about this place is that it took an hour to get us our food. Mind you all of our courses came together, rather than staggered as they should. The decor is pretty spot on here, and I'd recommend trying it out. Not reccomended for large parties.

I've had so many things on the menu and only recall one average item...the BBQ sandwich. The fries and their own ketchup are phenomenal, other favorites include grilled cheese and tomato soup, wild boar tacos (holy cow these are good) and the fried pb&j...just try it. Beer menu is always solid. Brunch is very good. I'm glad I moved so close to such a cool spot but man...I feel out of place some days since I'm not a hipster.

South Philadelphia Tap room is a small bar with a dining room. Shortish menu serving dinner and brunch on the weekends. Everyone raved about the wild boar tacos so of course we tried that app and I did enjoy the flavors. Although, I would say they did not taste different from good regular beef tacos. For my dinner, I had the grilled cheese with tomato soup. I chose this dish based on the yelpers love of the tomato soup but perhaps my favorite part of the meal was the house made ketchup. The soup was tasty and the grilled cheese was what it should be but I had come in for dinner and felt regret over the simple dish for my meal.

The South Philly Tap Room is one of the better restaurants in this area. It had really great food and is a decent brunch spot. There's 2 rooms one is more of the dining area with a dim lit setting for a nice dinner and then the other is the bar that has tvs and Philly sports on. The Tap Room Has a decent selection of beers. I got the Winter Manhattan which was a really good cocktail that had a hint of cranberry. For dinner, we split a couple of appetizers, one was the wild boar tacos that were delicious. I got the burger which was pretty good, but a bit messy. The fries were really good here with their homemade ketchup. My friend got the Grilled cheese and tomato soup which was also a good meal. Price range for dinner was about $10 - $15 for each dish. Overall a good place and I would love to come back to try some other items.

This is one cool tap room. I had brunch there and enjoyed a delicious bloody mary (and I don't give these compliments easily) and some...absolutely....amazing....breakfast tacos. Yes, who knew you could get so excited about breakfast tacos? You can. Atmosphere is cool. Laid back, hip and comfortable. Happy to see a place like this a little off the beaten path of Philly.

Its not often.. actually never that I walk into a bar and haven't had at least one beer on the draft list. Well there is a first time for everything. A few of my friends and I stopped in around 1pm on a Sunday to pregame before heading to the Philly Burger Brawl. Brunch is very popular at the Tap Room and all the outside tables were full and so were most of the tables inside. The inside of the bar area has great woodwork especially around the vestibule at the front door. We found a seat at the bar and quickly ordered a few drafts. I chose Russian River Damnation, Allagash Interlude, Goose Island Lolita and Good Island Bourbon County Brand Stout. The bartenders were always available even though they were very busy. I didn't get a chance to eat during this visit but I will be back again soon to try it. I wish there were bars like this in the burbs :(

Tiny little restaurant with banging food! I tried the tomato soup, asparagus and the fried PB & J. OMG! Everything was amazing. The soup was perfect and have two tiny pieces of grilled cheese in it. Talk about soaking up some major flavor! Yum! The asparagus was topped with a fried egg. Amazing. And the PB & J was crunchy and gooey and perfect! And the awesome customer service was just the cherry on top!

My parents and I visited SPTR while in town for the night. Our waiter was friendly but food not as good as we expected after seeing this place on TV. We ordered: Amaretto Sour Whiskey- Way too much whiskey in the drink. Our waiter noticed I was not drinking it and asked if it was OK, I told him it was too much whiskey. He said he would get me another one but unfortunately it tasted the same. Way too strong. Sea Scallop Frittata was too salty and runny. Oysters nothing special Knocchi was overcooked- a bit mushy but the sauce was yummy. Grilled Cheese was ehh ok but the tomato soup was very good. Fries had way too much salt. Nothing to brag about.

We had a layover and yelp led us here. The beers and drink options are great. I had the wild boar tacos and they are delish, my wife had the breakfast migas and they were also very very good. The staff is awesome and attentive! Highly suggest

what isn't delicious here?! tomato soup and grilled cheese, wild boar tacos, and the fried PB&J... delicious! they have a great happy hour and beer selection. this restaurant is a little bit smaller, but we've never had to wait for a table. it's very casual and laidback.

For one of my few adventures into South Philly (so far, anyway), I loved SPTR. If Harry Potter was real, this is where all of the Gryffindors would hang out, as there is the absolute coolest wallpaper ever (red velveteen lions) and the crowd is loud and boisterous (especially during sporting matches). Loved the vibe here. Awesome draft/bottle list and the happy hour deals are exceptional (half off of a $3 pint of Kenzinger? Yes, please, I need to go back). Another cool thing they do is late-night $2 tacos with a rotating assortment of meat. I found the food to be a very solid four stars--delightful tomato soup with grilled cheese and the fries were standouts. I didn't like the ketchup, but my friends rave about it, so it evened out. It was also all reasonably priced for the quality so I was very happy there as well. Unfortunately, they completely understaffed the floor on the Saturday night I went (only one waitress that we could see) and as a result, it took forever to find her when we wanted to get more food, get the check, etc. She was clearly overworked because we had to ask her to adjust the bill due to being charged something we didn't order. Everyone was pleasant otherwise, and the experience would have been perfect if they'd had more staff on hand.

SPTR is good, not great. Lacks the warm "pub" feel. The food & drink are (once again) good not great. The service is good on their best day. It's exactly what 3 stars say, "A-OK."

As my sister says "I save the five star reviews for the exceptional", well here you have it. A random afternoon lunch with my Mom found us at SPTR. I explained my food allergies after my mom ordered a burger with no cheese because she was told the kitchen pre-portions and don't do substitutions (not even for staff). I ordered the pork sandwich that our waiter Michael checked I could eat due to my dietary restrictions. The pork came out with cheese on it. Michael owned up to it immediately and said it was his mistake. He took the dish to the kitchen, back to his station, then down to the bar where I think he may have set it aside to eat for lunch. A replacement sandwich was promptly dropped off and was quite delicious. What he did next was unexpected and very professional and courteous. He came to the table and said "I'm so sorry for the mix up. I bought your sandwich and drink". I said "you don't have to do that" to his reply "it's already done". I ordered an Orval. That's a $10 Trappist beer if you are unfamiliar! Not a $3 draft. They had Row 11, my Mom's favorite pinot noir so she was extremely happy. Cheers Michael for doing good by us!

I really like the atmosphere and the beer list at SPTR but I think the food options overall are a bit limited. I also think it's a bit pretentious to be denied an additional topping (such as a tomato on a grilled cheese) to your sandwich. I get it, it's the chefs call, but a little effort to make a customer happy goes a long way. Good jukebox. Decent service. Good prices. Be prepared to wait for a table on the weekends at dinner hour.

Food was absolutely delicious! My party & I ordered to share, the whole fried chicken, cole slaw, french fries, white bean & kale soup, jalapeño & cheddar cornbread and fried apple doughnuts w/hard apple cider caramel, and when I tell u everything was sooooooo awesome, I mean it! I felt like a glutton because I ate some of everything! I'm such a fat foodie! I will be back soon!

Just moved to Passyunk Square area and have been going to the bars and restraints around that area, and we wanted to try something new. We went to SPTR on a Monday night. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because of the beer. I had the burger, cooked rare. It came out a bit cold and there wasn't much flavor to the been. And for $13 it was not worth it. Fries were typical and were not that great. Honestly if I wanted a burger I would rather take my business to a different place. I also ended up having half of the lamb sandwich because my girlfriend didn't like it at all. We weren't sure if it was supposed to be a cold sandwich or not, but it was and because of that it wasn't the best. I think it might be better warm. Overall I was disappointed in the trip. We may go back again for beers and I'll try the burger again to see if things changed or I just had a bad one.

They crushed Philly Beer Week 2014!!! I wish I just camped out there for it. 420 / Lagunitas night: The menu was unreal! crazy awesome concoctions like: mac and cheese with hot-dogs topped with doritos, bacon cheeseburger chimichangas, and my fav- a quesadilla stuffed with pb&j, chocolate, pretzels, topped with strawberry and basil. If that kind of innovative thinking doesn't get your heart racing, I'm not sure what will. Their beer list always rocks, their food is amazing, and with out of the box thinking like this- psh I'm not sure what else they can do to top it, but boy am I excited to see them try!

My boyfriend and I found ourselves hungry for dinner at about 6pm on a Monday night. We were in the neighborhood, and saw that SPTR had omni and veggie options alike so decided to give it a try. The atmosphere is pub-y, our waiter was friendly and helpful, and there is plenty of table seating along with a good sized bar. But the FOOD. The food is the reason to go to SPTR. We started with the cold blanched swiss chard with pickled bean sprouts over local tofu. Wonderfully flavorful, perfectly blanched chard, and silken tofu underneath that made all of the components together a seriously satisfying bite. I eat a lot of tofu and a lot of greens and I've never had anything quite like this before. After the outstanding appetizer, we had high hopes for our entrees. My boyfriend got the burger, and said it was one of the best burgers he's ever had (and this guy knows a good hamburger!) A side of house made pickles and house made ketchup took the entree a few steps above a regular pub burger. I had a grilled eggplant (vegan), and it was absolutely one of the best vegan dishes I have ever had in Philadelphia. Three big, juicy slices of eggplant smothered in harissa and grilled perfectly. Over top was a tabbouleh-like salad of arugula, couscous, some chopped cucumber and red onion, kalamata olives and raisins. It was full of fresh mint and herbs that made it the perfect complement to the fiery eggplant. Overall a completely superb meal, light yet hearty, satisfying and great as leftovers for lunch the next day! I cannot recommend this place enough, for meat eaters, vegetarians or vegans. I would go back and eat this same dish over and over. It is the only vegan entree on the menu, but I don't count this as a negative towards SPTR because it is perfect!

This place is really dimly lit and cute! We had the burger and the fried pb&j. The fried pb&j was amazing! I hate hate hate ketchup but their homemade ketchup was SO good. I had the founder's raspberry ale. Okay, I had 5 of them. We'll definitely be back!

Awesome little gem in South Philly. Great beers on tap and amazing good. I had the wild boar tacos and tomato soup both were excellent and very filling. The crowd is awesome and friendly, easy to talk to even though it is kind of a local establishment. Parking can be difficult. So plan ahead.

Finally went to SPTR after months on my to-do list. So gald I finally experienced this gem! I saw the Diners Drive Ins & Dives episode on Food Network, and was impressed how great of food they had as well as the popular draft beer selections. I went during Philly beer week, and of course was impressed with the large amount of sour beers on tap. Several Russian Rivers, and other sours that I love. Also had some tasty barrel-aged stouts on the menu. I sat at a table (no room at the bar, it was packed), which is a small downfall. I wish it wasn't so crowded so I could have a bar seat. I think sitting at the bar is a better experience for this type of pub, but oh well, I took what I could get. Our waitress was sweet, super busy, but still very attentive to us. MAC N CHEESE was yummy! My favorite was the BOAR TACOS, wow, lots of boar meat and cooked perfectly. So tender and delicious, what a unique flavor. They do not skimp on the portion size of guacamole smothered on top either. My favorite part! My roommie had wings, which were not your typical wings... they were served on a plate with sauce drizzled over top, very fancy presentation for wings. He said they were really good (I dont eat wings, but they looked good!) IMO, this bar gets 4.5 stars because it was so crowded, but I'm rounding up because I was very impressed with the quality of food which was absolutely delicious, paired with the rare craft beers on tap. I will definately be back soon!

Love this bar and wish it were closer to our Point Breeze home, but I really can't complain since we are within steps of their sister bar, American Sardine Bar. They serve brunch from 11-3 on the weekends. We went with a sampling of items and the wild boar tacos blew my mind. The right blend of spiciness - these tacos are amazing. The apple ricotta donuts were a delicious treat that I would highly recommend. Snag some outdoor seating if you can, but even if you can't, there's a nice breeze that blows through the front door for those sitting at the bar. Can't wait to stop by again.

Second stop Ina Philly pub crawl. Our bartender at Standard Tap suggested this as a great local bar. Beer selection was good, decent selection. We had two appetizers: head cheese tacos and wild boar tacos. The head cheese tacos were bland compared to the wild boar, which were over spiced in my opinion. Scene was very laid back on a Monday night.

So I've just asked my friend what he would rate his experience and he asked, "Is there a negative rating?" We'll since it's Yelp I guess we're stuck. Let me start by saying: this seems uncharacteristic of SPTR. But today was fucking absurd. ABSURD. Barring the usual sssslllloooowwwww (laid back? Lax?) drink-to-food service, one instance stood out. The menu CLEARLY states that the burger at SPTR is cooked 1 of 3 ways: rare, medium or well. My friend and I ordered our burgers rare, naturally, as a grass-fed, hipster-dipster burger should be ordered. Upon our short wait from order to food, we were very excited for the excellent experience we were about to enjoy. Alas, my friends' burger was well done (you know...as far from rare as possible) He politely asked to have the burger replaced. Our servers' response was "oh...ok" and then she walked away...leaving the burger...wait...what? What seemed like 10mins later she returned letting us know there would be a replacement burger. She ignored the plate with the well done burger, yet again. We asked if she wanted to take it and we received the reply, "No, there's really nothing we can do with that now." Walked away. Left the plate. Fucking hell. The replacement was brought. Served rare as requested. Well done burger still left...pushed aside on our small outdoor table. Our server, a food runner and a busser returned on multiple occasions and ignored the well done, unwanted burger (very clearly) on purpose. So, in short, we were burger shamed for our entire meal. Absurd, as I stated before. It was rude, awkward and just unprofessional. Take the damn thing back and throw it away or something! Mistakes happen! Don't punish the customer. In closing, it was a harrowing experience for four fellow industry workers. Bummer, SPTR.

My friends and I came to SPTR on New Years Eve. We were expecting it to be packed, but to our surprise, it was actually quiet. Yay for us. We ordered drinks and basically all the food on the menu. We shared Wild Boar tacos, fries, mussels, mac and cheese, and burgers. We ended with the donuts. Everything was really good, especially that mac and cheese. The only thing I wasn't crazy about their mussels--half of them barely opened, which is a pet peeve of mine. Glad I got to check it out and would definitely return. Their brunch menu looks excellent!

It hurts to give South Philadelphia Taproom only three stars, but it's well deserved after my most recent visit. The brunch was great- generous portions of French toast, eggs, and sausage that left me wanting more. What made this experience not so pleasant was the cleanliness and customer service. The table and menu were extremely sticky. Perhaps some spilled beer from the night before that never really got washed off. Judging by the faint smell of stale beer in the air, the floors may be in for a good cleaning too. As far as customer service, the waiter was very nice, but it took an extremely long time to get us our food, all while multiple employees were setting up Christmas lights on the walls. All I can say is that South Philadelphia taproom needs to step it up, because they aren't the only kid in town with a great beer list!

I come here now and then during the daytime to see my favorite bartender, Candace. Tonight was particularly great though, as a large group of us came in to celebrate my boyfriends birthday. We were that party that trickles in slowly and kept moving around. Granted we were all industry folk and familiar with the staff, it was just a super great time and everyone was super friendly and accommodating towards our large and ever changing group. Thanks for dealing with us SPTR, you always make it a good night!

I had a wedding to attend to in Philly and this was the first place I stopped by once I landed. And I loved it! Pulled right up to the bar and picked from the generous list of beers and was told the special of the day. Mushroom tacos (baby portabella I think) with cheese in them. Got two of those and man, what a taco! Probably the best mushroom taco I have ever tasted. And of course to top off the evening I had the fried PB&J, best decision of the weekend for me. I had another beer and really enjoyed this bar and the service, oh and the food.

Being a vegetarian, I know fries. I know fries in the way most long term vegetarians know fries...because their loved ones know burgers, cheesesteaks, etc. The fries at SPTR are stupid delicious. They are creamy on the inside, and crisp on the outside. And the ketchup is pretty darn tasty too. Frankly, the whole menu is pretty awesome. I've been for dinner, brunch, and drinks, and always leave stoked to have good veggie food in the city. Mind you, the vegetarian/vegan selection isn't huge, but neither is the menu...if you're picky, check it out before venturing to this spot.

This review is painful to write, because this is my favorite bar in the city for pub food. We were so excited to go for the 10th Anniversary celebration, but it turned out to be a total nightmare. I knew it would be crowded, so a 30 minute wait wasn't a big deal, but what was a big deal was my bill when I saw we were being charged $6 a can for Yunkin' Punkin'! That's crazy no matter what the occasion. We get to our seats and the waitress tells us there's a limited menu, because they're trying to get rid of all the leftovers before the new menu....really, that's the intro? To top it off, she finishes with, "the cooks are really busy tonight so there's no substitutions on any item." I ask for waters, but unfortunately they didn't show up until dessert. We ordered burgers from the special burger list....cooked rare. Since I've been here about thirty times, I wasn't surprised to be asked, "do you want pasta salad, fries, or a side salad?" We asked for fries. I knew we were in trouble when the fries showed up on separate plates from the burgers. I asked why and was stunned to hear, "We're not serving any sides with the burgers tonight. Everything is a la carte." So a burger and fries costs $16 at SPTR now? Then to really throw me over the top, I cut the burger open and it's medium-well. Both burgers went back, and she offered a comped dessert, but when it comes time to order dessert, she informs us they're only offering fried PB&Js tonight! Needless to say, this 10th Anniversary celebration appeared to be nothing more than a money grab to pack the place, get rid of the old menu leftovers, and charge extra for what has always come with the meals. The excuse that "we took a dollar off the menu prices to make up for the a la carte sides" was a bunch of bunk. Oh, and Yunkin' Punkin' for $6....give me a break. HUGE disappoint from a diehard SPTR fan. It would have been nice to see some interesting specials or an all day happy hour to celebrate 10 years for longtime patrons, but instead we got this mess.

Visited this place with my brother for a late night snack and drink. Food (8.5/10) = Tried the wild boar tacos since my brother recommended it, and also since it was one of the most common mentioned items on Yelp. Meat with great flavor. Guacamole well made. Proportions for each component of the taco were perfect. You get two of these beauties per order. My brother got "My Mom's Meatloaf" (Mac and Cheese, barbequed mushrooms, made with country time pork). Simple. Comforting. Velvety from the mac and cheese. Savory meat. To the chef, I love your mom for creating and teaching you this incredible dish. All finished with Nitro Lancaster Creame Ale, and my usual go to beer - Allagash White. Service (8.0/10) = Just like the food, great friendly service. Ambiance (8.0/10) = Tucked away in a neighborhood in South Philly. Great wood finishes. Overall opinion = this place is a gem in South Philly, serving awesome food and great beer. You should definitely try the wild boar tacos. But don't overlook "My Mom's Meatloaf!"

The menu used to be good. Now its full hipster. I cant get into full out hipster somewhat vegan food. Or places that serve toast and ppl pay for it like its an entree. Had a great group lunch here for a retirement lunch. They sat us in our own area, and attentively waited on us. The beer selection was great, and the waiters helped us find what we liked. The menu seemed a bit eclectic at first glance, but everybody loved their lunch regardless of what they ordered. The burger was juicy and tasty. The fish (think it was trout) was flavorful and nice texture. Would definitely come back for lunch.

Great spot for brunch. Loved their menu during beerweek this year. Came back for rainy day boozen and found their (nonbrunch) menu pretty interesting with a few adventurous items on there. It's not often you see headcheese tacos... or really headcheese anything.

Been here couple times with friends. Always have a good time with good foods and beverages. But last night, i went there with my girlfriend who come visited me from out of country. We've planned to spent another good time in this place when the new waitress ( i've never seen her before) asked my girlfriend to show her id. As a tourist she didn't have any State ID on her so she gave her a copy of her passport ( she never bring a real one for safety purpose ) with clear picture, full name and Date of birth. But the waitress refused to even take a look at that. She just said that she has to be older than 21 to walked into the place. Well, my girlfriend is 26 and it clearly print on a passport's copy. We've tried to reasoned with her but she keep refused to hear us. We're so upset and decided to just leave. To make matter worse, me and my girlfriend been there for at least two times before. The other waitresses seems to recognized us but they're just keep quiet. It's a shame since we really love this place. But after this incident we will never step our foot on this place again. My girlfriend felt humilliated and embarrased. Thank you for the "great" service!

Good.. - best pancakes I have ever had and my wife loves the breakfast tacos - beer selection - service and staff were great - atmosphere Bad.. - limited menu - parking if driving All in all it was a good meal and we had a great time. Next time we are in the area, we will stop again.

We came, we drank, we ate, we laughed, we yelled, we had a pretty good time. The staff was friendly and were pretty good at keeping our drinks refreshed. The food was pretty good for pub grub but given the price tag of both drinks and food I will have to space out the frequency of return trips here. But on the whole it was pretty good.

South Philadelphia Tap Room was a little more expensive and a bit more upscale than I was expecting, but it satisfied nonetheless. A few small changes, and this would be a perfect 5. When I walked in last night, the music was unnecessarily loud, and I would have walked out were it not for SPTR's excellent reputation. Since it was crowded, my friends and I were seated underneath one of the speakers on the lower level, which didn't help the volume situation at all. I would have liked to sit upstairs or outside where we wouldn't have to shout at each other, but such is life! The beer and food made up for the crazy high decibel level, although we probably would have stayed much longer and had more drinks if it were just a tad quieter in there. The local beer selection was solid, and the food was surprisingly inventive. I had the tomato lager soup with mini grilled cheese, and it was one of the best takes on grilled cheese and tomato soup I've had. At 7-9 bucks (don't remember exactly), it's a bit steep for an appetizer but it was worth it. The onions provided a welcome crunch to the dish, and livened up a traditional staple. The soup was well-balanced and had a thick texture with large tomato chunks, which I loved. My friend had the grilled local asparagus, which was similarly delicious. The other vegetarian options looked interesting as well, and I'd love to come back and try them. Just turn down the volume next time! I'm hoarse from shouting at my friends. Sincerely, Grandma Spruce

This is a great local spot. I have been frequequenting Philly a lot lately and get to try out all kinds of new spots. Last night we came to the Top House. Menu is small but everything was very good and eclectic. The beer taps are extensive including one on cask and one on nitro. For the price you won't be disappointed with the quality of the food and beer in a good, local pub environment.

Went there for brunch. Pretty bummed out about the $13 runny eggs and $8 bloody mary. The service was good, but I feel like our waitress hurried us out- which is strange because there was no one there.

Let me correct myself now. The bartender I had the last time was Candance and she was great. My liquid marijuana was amazing. Today, I am in here celebrating my birthday by myself and Cassandra is an absolute doll. Making all of my personal drink request (Blackberry Mojito). Must check these two amazing ladies out for great cocktails. I might need a ride after my 4th specialty drink. Best South Philly bar and stays open late on a Monday night. My ricotta doughnuts are aww... So good. Sweet tooth probably has tons of cavity right now. Lol.

I saw SPTR on television and bookmarked it. I had some time to kill before I caught a flight, so my colleagues and I decided to hit up a place on my wish list. When we saw the menu, we were tempted by too much, so we decided to order various items and allow one another to try our dishes. We all began with the apple and ricotta doughnuts, which were to die for. The donuts were well cooked, and the accompanying carmel sauce was an excellent touch. My colleague actually grabbed one of the last two donuts in the order and told my other colleague and me to figure out what to do with the remaining one. The donuts are that good! I ordered the scrapple, egg, and cheese sandwich. The sandwich was my first experience with scrapple, and I cannot say it was bad. The sandwich was filling, and I left satisfied. One of my colleagues ordered the Mac and Cheese, which was simply delicious. We were warned that it was not extremely cheesy, but the flavor made the insight an irrelevant detail. Another diner ordered the French toast made from French bread instead of traditional white bread. The toast was not too eggy, but it had a wonderful texture and felt substantive. Aside from the food, the beer selection was wonderful and reasonably priced. I ordered a couple of their special beers and was not disappointed. Overall, SPTR was a great experience. I really want to return with some clients to show them what real Philly food is.

Great local destination for good beer and friendly service. They also have good food! Usually they carry great selection of seasonal micro beer from local brewery. They also have to go beer which I think is a bit pricey. Overall, it is a good destination to hang out and have a few beer or more.

I may need to go back but just in case i come to my senses and decide not to im give sptr 3 stars for now. Brunch club is always a cluster and since they were given notice of our arrival i expected more than one server taking orders and refilling drinks. She did a great job given the circumstances but larger parties should be accommodated differently, My cornmeal blueberry pancakes were ok. Plenty of blueberries which made me happy. I also tried the doughnuts and they were pretty good. I was anti there being no brunch drink specials but i guess since this is a beer bar they won that battle. Im glad i went ( finally) but was under-whelemed. Sad

I came to South Philadelphia Tap Room before a Phillies game and left full and satisfied. I had the Bacon and Jalepeño Omelette, served alongside home fries and wheat toast. For just $13, I thought that the portion size was more than generous; everything on the plate was flavorful, and before you know it, my plate was licked clean! One item that I was not a big fan of, however, were the Mexican Chocolate Doughnuts. I found them rather dry and not worth the $6 price tag. The service was somewhat attentive, but I would have liked to have been checked up on at some point during our meal. All in all, this is a great brunch spot in south Philadelphia. Great food, great prices, and the perfect spot to eat before a sporting event down at the AT&T complex.

SPTR BROUGHT BACK THE GRILLED CHEESE! I hadn't been here since December, when I was told that the only thing I ever eat here, the grilled cheese sandwich, was removed from the menu. No explanation was given when I asked my server about it, and she said that the kitchen could not make me one. My boyfriend and I finished our drinks then went to POPE, where I had, you guessed it, a grilled cheese. But over the weekend I happened to check SPTR's menu online and happily I noticed that my favorite menu item has returned from vacation. So, my boyfriend and I headed there right away to see if it was true. It was, I got one, ate it, and was very thrilled.

I may go as far as saying this is the best burger in the city...at least that I've had. The ketchup has to be homemade and you can tell it in the great quality. This is worth traveling out of center city for. The pickles are amazing, the mac+cheese is amazing, all of the food is amazing.

Many disappointments: 1. Home-made ketchup was not good 2. Fries are dry and tasteless 3. Burgers are obviously frozen, pre-packaged, and not well cooked. You can't even order medium-rare! 4. My beer was funky tasting and had no head. I could hear the bartender comment to a friend that the beer I ordered was awful, but she didn't say anything to me or apologize when I obviously didn't drink it. 5. Did I mention that this entire experience was over-priced for the area? Long story short - Stay Away!

The South Philadelphia Tap Room used to be the greatest gastro-pub in the city. Why was it the greatest? To determine this, we must first define what we want out of an excellent gastro-pub. There are two items that come to mind first and foremost with a few other peripheries. 1) A comprehensive menu with interesting items displaying a chef who is not afraid to take subtle risks in the right ways. Most importantly, these items must taste amazing. 2) A beer selection that does not include 12 IPAs and a Stout, but a selection amongst selections. In other words, I don't really want to drink Belgian Wheat Beers or IPAs anymore. I like Porters. I like Stouts. I want a selection of these selections of beers. Other things such as an excellent happy hour special has weight in our criteria for grading these kinds of places, as does menu prices, but they are antecedent to the two things listed above. Beer List and Menu. Philly is a beer city. Philly has plenty of gastro-pub style places. Standard Tap, Johnny Brendas, etc etc. I honestly do not know where this movement came from but I will say it once here: Belgian Beers are not the high water mark. I'm sorry. Accept this and you, too, can become a beer connoisseur. South Philly Tap Room used to have the best rotating draft selection and their menu was full of items from Boar Burritos to Escargot in a Pesto sauce to my favorite - the spinach and crab with pita dip. At some point, they lost all of this. I understand Chefs come and go - maybe they are cherry picked as other places wave larger amounts of money in front of them. Its a fact of life. Its business. Things are going to change. Unfortunately South Philly Tap Room has not been able to reassert its dominance in these areas. While their new menu is very interesting (Vegan Hoagie), their beer selection still flails about between mediocrity and acceptable. Their bottle selection once boasted an uncountable number of craft beers from a variety of brewers but it has now been paired down. I also understand that this is business too. Times are indeed tough and takeout is not exactly the money maker for a place like this, so I really cannot hold that against them. Beyond all my complaints, South Philly Tap Room still is light years ahead of everyone else in its neighborhood. I go there. I like going there. They expanded their dining section and it looks great. It fits the ambiance and aesthetics of the place. It was a smart move on their part. Even though I am a patron, I will still recommend this place to other people as well. I may be griping about things, but it is only because at one point in time they achieved a level of perfection - A menu that was par excellence with what I felt was an excellent beer selection done by a fellow who knew and loved beer. Its the loss of this that bothers me, but if you have not been there, it is beyond necessity to give it a try. Yes, It gets crowded. Yes, It gets loud on the weekends, but its a bar. Its prices are moderate and it still boasts a large tap system. Its dark, its intimate, and in the warmer weather there is outside seating. I've never experienced any problems with the staff whatsoever aside from forgetting a glass of water here and there but that is well beyond forgivable. Yes, you seat yourself. They are not pretending to be a fine dining establishment - its a bar. And still a damn good one at that.

This is my second time coming and I truly enjoyed the food. The wild Boar Tacos, and the special Lobster Roll was my dinner and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I couldn't say that about my dinner companion. He ordered the Grilled Cesar and did not expect to see a plate of grilled lettuce. Poor guy. Cest La Vie. I'll go back.

Great beer selection, lots of things on tap, many local and seasonal and things I haven't tasted before. Today I just had the mac and cheese, which they call a side dish, but is plenty big for a meal and a steal at $5. If I am really hungry sometimes I pair it with a salad, most recently one with grapefruit sections that was really fresh and yum. The specials menu changes a lot and they get really creative, today they had a chilled BLT soup that was tempting. The service here is a little off, I am never quite sure who my server is or if that even matters. I always forget that this place exists as I rarely cross South Broad st, but I am going to try to visit more often.

The Tap Room has homemade food with several hard to find beers on draught. Where else would you be able to get Maredsous 8 in Philadelphia? (This is a beer you can get at the Maredsous abbey in Belgium.) I had the Wild Man Clam chowder which was a Manhattan style soup with a bang. Nice and spicey. To finish that off, I had the Monster BLT. Very nice. My friend had the steak with beans and plantains. He enjoyed it. The service was good and fast. This was a nice break from the typical bar food that has all the character of dried out shoe leather. Would definitely recommend eating there and will return in the future.

Given that there is no other pub on the west side of Broad St, SPTR has become many South Phillyans' go-to pub. The staff: awesome. Down to earth and plentiful. The food: amazing. Had the Brussels sprouts, fries, and Grilled Cheese. The beer: ample. Reasonable and good selection. Yes, I will be frequenting here.

I have visited SPTR on several occasions - for drinks, brunch and even dinner. I particularly like their selection of beer and their brunch choices. If you have a chance, try their corn meal pancakes - so good! I've also had their eggs benedict and steak (you will be full for days!). During the day, it's definitely more family friendly then the evening. The music is decent and the wait staff friendly.

This place has been so good to me...they not only let me have my birthday party there, but they reserved me some tables, printed out "happy birthday Jenn" on the beer menu, and gave me a taproom t-shirt. They are loyal, funny, and deal with me quite well when I'm a demanding birthday bitch drinking tequila and yelling at their other clients. Me likey.

Rolling into the South Philly Tap Room out of the frigid January weather was pretty nice. It was very warm. The Tap Room claims to be a neighborhood bar with a great selection of beer. This is mostly true. The space is kind of small and cozy (although I was told by the bartender that there's an expansion in the works). And for a place called a 'tap room' I expected more draught beers. What they had was excellent. A great selection of local microbrews including Stoudts, Yards, Sly Fox, Victory and more. They had many Belgians by the bottle but they were a little pricey by what I consider to be South Philly standards. The microbrews both by the bottle and on draught were priced well, though, so there's definitely plenty to drink. The food was decent pub food. I had a duck and andouille sausage gumbo which was pretty good. TK argued that duck shouldn't be spicy because it destroys the subtle flavor of the meat, but I liked it. They had a fairly varied menu. And wi-fi. I might be back for lunch!

Maybe the cook changed? I'm not sure what happened. I've been here a few times in the last 2 months. The food has been amazing and the service is tops. I went for brunch recently and had the mushroom tofu scramble. DELICIOUS. As a beer drinker, the selection is great. I have also been here with friends and family that don't drink and it's comfortable for everyone. Good place to go on a romantic date or for an event.

Many great beers on tap, some good food, some good service for south philly. That being said it is a tad spendy for its location. Its real hard for me to want to venture down into the concrete jungle. The prices here surely aren't making me go out of my way to get here either. But if I end up here I am not going to complain. I am going to have them pour me a brew and I'm going to sit back and enjoy the people watching session.

having only been here three times, i may not be the best of judges, but i do try. i ate here once and the food was very good, i dont think the food is the main draw here though. the beer list is great, there are usually a bunch of the greats on draft and the bottle list is notable, they had three of the big bottles from lost abbey available. this place is definately a spot to hit if you are, in fact a beer fan. my only complaint, and it is a very small one, i suffered through this nice guy getting gouged all night for $4.00 yuengling lagers, though alot of the other beers were reasonably priced. i guess thats where they make the margin or maybe that guy shoulda been drinkin somethin else. i'm comin back for brunch!

My roommate introduced me to the tap room which is her fave hangout. I've been here twice, once for dinner and once for drinks, and had great experiences at both times. The menu is not what you'd expect for a bar - ie wild boar sandwich, moroccan chicken wrap (AMAZING), and even lion meat (I kid you not), and their selections on tap are quite impressive. I like the atmosphere of the place, and I look forward to coming back.

    (5)
  • Davide C.

Let me start off by saying that I love the atmosphere, I love the beer selection and the staff is friendly, helpful, reliable and attentive. Additionally, I refuse to pass judgement without patronizing an establishment several times over. This is not from a one-time experience, but the sum of each and every one of them over the period of several years that I've been frequenting this new local hotspot. If ketchup were all there were to rate, this place would get five stars. It's the best damned red stuff you'll ever dip a fry into. Oh, and the fries! My god, the fries! If you could deep fry heaven to a golden brown with a perfectly crisp exterior, it'd still be not quite up to par in comparison with SPTR's fries. The burgers are good and standard. The salads, particularly the beet and fennel one, are all quite wonderful! The NC-style BBQ chicken is fantastic and fairly unique for the neighborhood, but the menu should be clear that the coleslaw mentioned in the description of the sandwich is served IN the sandwich and not on the side. I hate coleslaw, but otherwise, the BBQ chicken is a must. My gripe, though, is that everything else is subpar to slightly below standard at best. SPTR's other dishes posture themselves to be something other than very very expensive pubgrub/diner food. The roast pork sandwich can be gotten around the corner at Nick's at 33% less of SPTR's $9 pricetag, not to mention that it's not that good to begin with. The mac and cheese is absolutely atrocious. To even begin to describe this horrible concoction as 'mac and cheese' is an insult to Southerners everywhere. It's quite possible the absolute worse 'standard' mac and cheese I've ever had, with The Abbeye in Northern Liberties a near tie (the two duke it out for the position). I'm not much a dessert person to begin with, but waiting forty minutes for the one time that I'd ordered one was a bit much, especially when it was as disappointing as the caramel apple bread pudding was. For something with caramel, apple AND bread, it tasted like none of them. In fact, that's what it tasted like: none. Nothing. No flavor at all. It was the blandest crap dessert I've ever had. Save yourself five bucks and wait for the dollar store to carry Betty Crocker microwavable brownies. The $6 for this bread pudding is absolutely not worth it. Onto the brunch menu, the egg dishes, save the cheesesteak omelette, are often overcooked or watery. The mushroom tofu scramble is watery beyond reason and the eggs benedict were overdone each of the three times I've ordered it, but I must admit that the sauce was pretty good to great. Then, once I realized that I paid $16 for it, I thought it was crap since I could get it for $7 in town or $6 at the Snyder Plaza Diner, albeit neither of those options come with overcooked, tough steak, so I guess SPTR has got them both on that! The sticky bun french toast can best be described as diabetic shock on a platter with gangrenous amputation gratis with the meal. Overly sweet doesn't begin to cover the syrupy goo that is this menu option. To try: burger and fries, cheesesteak omelette, beet and fennel salad, headcheese taco (when they have it)

The SPR is good if you want to have a beer, but the few times I have gone to eat dinner, the food has been inconsistent. The desserts almost always hit the mark, but the entrees can be only so so. I have also had pretty poor service and am consistently annoyed by one particular waitress. I think they put more emphasis on beverage service than anything else, and in that area they are pretty great, always an interesting beer selection.

I've been to SPTS many times, but felt the need to do a review after my experience last night. So, let's go through the major things needed for a great Saturday night out for food and beers with friends..... Food - I've never had anything bad here. I've never had anyone I was with here have anything bad. And the tomato soup & grilled cheese with fries is about the best damn meal this simple eater could ask for! Their menu is perfect - they definitely have some more creative menu items for the foodies out there (wild boar tacos or vegan eggplant pizza anyone?) and make excellent down-home staples for the simple and picky eaters like me (awesome burgers and the aforementioned grilled cheese). In short, everyone leaves full and happy. Beer - awesome list to choose from. Totally satisfies the beer snob in me (strong IPA's are my fave). I love going to a place that has enough selection where I can try a different beer with each round. Service - this is why I had to finally post a review. We had, quite possibly, the BEST service I've had in a bar in a very long time. I honestly didn't catch our server's name - she's got really short, light-reddish-brownish-blondish hair and glasses. She was super super friendly and helpful. One of my friends happens to be a picky beer drinker who also doesn't know a lot about beer, so she asked a lot of questions about flavors. The server didn't just answer - she explained flavors to her in plain English (instead of beer-snob speak) and ended up finding her something she really liked. She also didn't flinch when the size of our party doubled as more friends came to join us. And most importantly, she was on top of things - I never had an empty beer or water glass. She always seemed to check in at the perfect times. She even thanked us for entertaining her when we left (we were playing a fun twist on Bingo while we were there). Hands down - she rocked. So, SPTS - I was the only veteran in my group. None of the people I was with had been to SPTS before. They all loved it and started talking about how we should start venturing a little more south than our usual haunts more often. I think you'll be seeing more of us soon.

South Philly Taproom is in our neighborhood and a go to spot for dinner over these last few snowy weeks. Each time we leave there we agree it was another great meal! The mac and cheese is fantastic as it the vegan hoagie. The music and mood is right on - so glad it is 3 blocks from the house.

The crab dip there was my favorite thing ever, I used to fiend for it like a crackbaby, but then they took it off the menu. So now I just go for the excellent beer selection at reasonable prices (god i love the triple karmeliet YUM). While no crab dip, the poutine fries and jerk chicken wings are also excellent (I only tend to get there for the late night menu).

this place is usually my go to bar when im not in the mood to try something new. atmosphere is chill and the jukebox is always full of good things. the service at the tables is sometimes slow on a busy night but i tend to sit at the bar anyways. the outside seating is very limited. i think the food selection was a lot better before and the menu seems like it got smaller too. what i will recommend is the cinnamon bun french toast for brunch, although when i eat it im out of commision and overly stuffed for the next 8 hours. the beer selction is most definitely one of the best in the city but i think they could drop the price on a few by $1 or something. long story short, if you like beer as much as me then this is definitely one of the best local spots in south philly. trust me....there arent many

I gotta tell you...at first I was a tad overwhelmed by the crowd. After coming off a rather traumatic shift at my job I was less than amped to be sharing the air with so many people. Within minutes I was calmed and had a grand ole time, so much so, that I left my bag behind. The opening barmaid found it the next day and to her I tip my hat...and glass.

This place has probably some of the best bar food you'll ever sink your teeth into. The Monster grilled cheese sandwich is killer! Not to mention they have a fine selection of beers bottled and tapped. Even some seasonal stuff you'd be surprised. The service is very friendly and it caters to a fun crowd of all ages. I was even impressed with the selections available on their jukebox. Now they extended their place to a seating area for real dining, also upping their menu for more delites. So if you're new to the South Philly area and want to find a comfortable and affordable bar, this is it!

Way over rated! However the environment is very cool & laid back... Everyone seems to be there for the same reason... a drink lol; service was good. I myself am not a big beer lover but my date was and he was left very unimpressed w/the selection of Ale that the rated "NO. 1" by City's Best had to offer....

The South Philly Tap Room is great. Very few places in Philly have such a good beer selection without becoming pretentious (Monk's, Eulogy, etc.). The bartenders are friendly, but not overly so. Brunch is great since all drafts are half priced, though with so many strong beers its not hard to get inappropriately drunk on a Sunday morning. All in all, on of my favorite fall-back places in Philly.

  • David K.

This is a terrific beer bar with nice food. They have a fine array of domestic microbrews on tap and an impressive range of outstanding bottled beer, too. Service can be a little spotty. I would give it five stars, except one night they had a pro football exhibition game on the televisions instead of a crucial late-season Phillies game that I wanted to watch. The bartender wouldn't change the channel on one of the tvs to the baseball game, which disgusted me.

good food, good atmosphere, good service. nice homey inviting decor with dark wood everything and plush chairs around a table at the front (a nice touch i think). its been more crowded there lately, so its harder to talk over people. but thats no different from any other good bar i guess. i have friends who go there once a week and they rave about the drinks and staff and burgers. ive gotten the salads and hummus, both were great. as for drinks, i got a diet coke... perfect.

As a final effort to love sptr I took my parents and boyfriend here on a lazy sunday for linner (yes- lunch+dinner). Except for the bar, it was empty. Seriously I thought maybe i was getting terrible service before because the waitresses didnt like my face, or maybe the person with me was of an ethnic backround they didnt appreciate. I HAVE NO GOD DAMN CLUE WHY THE SERVICE IS SO MIND BLOWINGLY TERRIBLE. The waitress came over and hurried us through a drink order. She gave us two menu's to share between the FIVE of us. She never came back. The busboy delivered out drinks. We finished them while perusing the menu. When we were finished and bored the busboy came back and gave us the dinner specials- We asked for our waitress. We waited. After ten minutes of twiddling our thumbs, I was fed up and embarrassed. I paid for our drinks with the bartender and we went to another bar with the same caliber of food and beer selection with great service. You're not really one in a million SPTR, I'm over you.

Seems as if it just expanded, well at least to my eyes, the bar is a tight spot but the beers are worth the squueze. Need Room - go to the back for a table, there are a few booths too. Oh, want to eat Al Fresco - when warm - you may. And you're hungry...no disappointment here. Beer Geek kind or aspiring to be - come thirsty. Great all around.

Went to the place for food and drinks. Beer selection is ok but a pricier than some other locations that are closer to home. Ordered the tomato soup with griled cheese, tacos, and salad and found each dish to be missing something. Wouldn't go back on price of beer alone and lack of quality of food.

The SPTR is pretty great. It's definitely a neighborhood bar for people who don't live in the neighborhood-or live close to the neighborhood. The food is just OK-the grilled cheese and tomato soup is pretty tasty! I really like their selection of beers and it's nice to sit outside on the side walk. I like their waitstaff and they seem very knowledgeable about beer.

We tried the SPTR brunch yesterday, and it was awesome. Something that can make or break a brunch for me is the potatoes; these were a little more wedge-like than I normally prefer, but well-seasoned and the shape was MORE than compensated for by the FRIED ONIONS, which were not only delicious but seemed to be in some kind of vaguely vinegar-y sauce (?) I don't know what it was but the mouth-puckering flavor really made the dish for me. My eggs over easy were perfect for mopping up with toast, and the bacon was crispy but not too crispy. Also, mimosas. I am kind of glad I don't live in South Philly or I would be here all the time, and my waistline would not thank me.

Great beer selection...they even picked up a keg of dogfish head 120min IPA, but waited until after beer week to tap it (now that is class). Order the cheese steak sliders, fish n chips, bacon cheese burger. Off the beaten path, but doesn't get packed except for during world championship parades

Last night I enjoyed the evening with a stop by the South Philly Tap Room. The Tap Room is located on the corner of South 15th and Mifflin Streets. I was pleasantly surprised to be able to grab a small table without a wait. The place was nicely appointed with a medium-sized bar as well as a decent amount of tables. The menu offered many tempting selections and our meal was fantastic. I enjoyed a delicious burger and fries as well as the fried pickles appetizer. The South Philly Tap Room had fourteen beers and ales on draft as well as a fairly nice bottle selection. We sampled three beers with our meal, Sly Fox's Schmitten Kitten Kolsch, Manayunk Brewery's Red Rye, and Ommegang's Rare Vos. It has become the norm, to serve beer in the proper glassware and the South Philly Tap Room follows the norm. All in all we had a good time, the only downside to our visit was our server wasn't the best. I will definitely be returning to the South Philly Tap Room soon and would suggest you do the same.

I visited this place for the first time a few nights ago. The beer selection was great and the fried chicken special was delicious, with a nice taste of rosemary. The service was pretty good as well, not really a surprise considering I was there after prime dinner hours on a weeknight. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was the pricing, which seemed a little steep considering the portion size and the location of the place. For 15 bucks I'd expect at least one real side in addition to the chicken and one lonely square of (pretty good) cornbread. That said, I'll definitely be back to try some of the other things on the regular menu.

This review is by a visitor to the Philly area. I have been here for about a month and a couple times a week my wife and I venture out for lunch, or early dinner, and a couple beers. I really like the selection of gastropubs in the area and have to tell you that this place is awesome. My wife ordered the Tomato Lager Soup and Grilled Cheese Sandwich and I had the Wild Boar Tacos. I thought my tacos were very very good but man was I jealous of my wife when I tasted her lunch. The grilled cheese was delicious and the soup was out of this world. I love the chunky tomato soup. Not overly milky or creamy and really good tomato flavor. Don't get me wrong the Boar Tacos were very good but man that Grilled Cheese and Tomato soup are a reason to go back. The Macaroni and Cheese was ordered as a side dish and was good too.

an absolutely fantastic bar, the tap room has yet to let me down in any way. good food, good company, well-priced all the way 'round. plus, i can walk home from here, lickety split! there's another star right there.

i've been with this place through thick and thin...through good and bad chefs. the good one is back...so i'm happy. and you know what else makes me happy? the fact that i now know that Lager in tomato soup tastes GOOD. try theirs. it's...well...GOOD.

my goodness this place makes an excellent vegan sandwich thing with tempeh and homemade tofu mayo and grilled onions. definitely delicious. they also make their own ketchup, and the effort really shows. i hear that their meat stuff is good too, especially the head cheese tacos.

Awesome beer selection and delicious food. The tomato lager soup was a revelation. The wait staff has been very friendly both times that we've gone (Sunday breakfast and Saturday night dinner). There is ample seating, which is always nice.

My wife and I stopped in for a quick dinner and first thing I have to say is we felt pretty old. This is definitely a young person's bar, at least the main bar area and the outside seating. We sat up in the back and had the place to ourselves on a Tuesday evening. It has a nice Belgian Bar look, warm colors, lots of dark wood, and I wish I could say it was somewhat romantic, just the two of us up there, but the canned music was way to loud to hold a decent conversation and most of the time it was just bad music to boot. Some rap, some hip hop, some electronic noise, and finally I guess in a concession to us, some softer Dylan, which was still too loud. I'm not against loud music, I blast the ipod in the car all the time, I just can't stand hip hop and rap, especially when I am trying to eat. It's a shame too because the food and the beer were both pretty good. My wife had a burger and I had the roast port with fries. The roast pork can hold it's own against most any other place in South Philly and that;s saying something. It came on a great tasting crusty bread and the fries were real potatoes heavily seasoned and plain damn good. I would eat there again, but I wish they would adjust the sound system so it's just a few people in there because casual conversation was all but impossible. One last thing, the service was very good and the waiter steered me off my first beer choice and in to a nice light ale. Good job there young fellow.

I came here with a friend after she told me about an amazing cocktail they have - the gin gimlet. It's gin, lime juice, basil, and cucumber puree. You usually see mint in drinks like that so whoever thought of using basil is an herb genius. It didn't taste very strong but that could be because the gin used is rumored to be Hendrick's. If it is, the $9 price tag makes a little more sense. My friend got a drink with whiskey, lemon and fresh raspberries. I was surprised how good it was, coming from someone who hates whiskey. They had a pretty good beer selection and the prices were a reasonable $5-$7 per draft. We got a little hungry into our cocktailing and decided to split the grilled cheese and mac and cheese. Lots of carbs and cheese, I know, but what's better drunk munchies than that? The grilled cheese was solid - nothing crazy, just a good amount of melty cheese between buttery, crusty bread. I had asked for fries instead of the tomato/beer soup, but we ended up getting both. The soup was awesome, the fries were steak fries (meh) that tasted dry and flavorless. The mac and cheese was kind of disappointing. The sauce was thin and it didn't have much flavor. My friend said they recently had a change of chef and the food used to be awesome but has since fallen off. Maybe it was just an off night but if I went back it would just be for drinks. Service was quick and efficient, and friendly. Atmosphere was pretty standard for a beer bar.

My friends and I came here for brunch/lunch on a Sunday afternoon and we were pleasantly surprised by the experience. They were able to seat the 6 of us right away with no problems. Food was good with large portions. I ordered the brisket hash with egg and while there probably could have been a little bit more brisket, I really enjoyed it. The only cons are that parking can be a little difficult and its a tiny bit on the pricier side. But I think we all agreed we'd go back.

I had an excellent time here! It is easily accessible from the subway station but.more importantly the beer was delicious and affordable. A few of the ones I wanted to try were out of but I had the Corson Donk Christmas ale and it was amazing! The Christmas decor, music (at just the right volume), and the pleasant staff made my experience stand out. The bathrooms were very clean and well stocked. This is one of my new favorite places in Philadelphia so far! I already have plans for brunch and drinks there next week! It reminded me of a scene from Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia. GREAT vibes.

Just went here for the first time and it was spectacular, can't believe I am just now finding out about it. First off, the bar has a great ambiance, very clean, great lighting, not too loud but still lively to just the right degree. The bartenders were attentive and the service was solid. More importantly, the beer selection was very good with a wide array of draft beers and an even bigger bottle selection (my favorite was the Stone Russian stout). Foodwise, also awesome. We had the grassfed burger with what seemed like homemade ketchup (it was awesome whatever it was) and this awesome mustard. We also had the mac 'n cheese which was just amazing, it looked like something you would get for $30 at an expensive restaurant, it had this sweet mushrooms on top that really complimented the cheese very well. I'm excited to go back and try their grilled cheese (supposed to be the best in the city) along with their wild boar tacos. Additionally, the prices can't be beat for what you get. Overall, great spot to go for dinner, beers, happy hour, lunch, brunch, etc... I doubt this place can do a bad meal.

There's enough reviews of this place out there so I'll just hit up some highlights. 1.) Along with The Khyber, SPTR has the best mac and cheese in the city. The best. 2.) My favorite part of the burger? The house-made ketchup that comes on the side. I usually ration it so I can bring the extra home with me. 3.) Yeah, their grilled cheese is awesome, and gets props from national publications ( foodandwine.com/slidesho… ). 4.) Don't skip dessert. Especially not the pot brownie or ricotta donuts. 5.) Beer.

Awesome delicious quality food everytime I go! The burger and grilled cheese with tomato soup will not dissapoint! Also if you feel like trying something out of the ordinary the boar tacos are phenomenal! Good service, not too expensive, nice ambiance, will definitely be back.

Since our first incident (which clearly was a mistake and I apologize for that mistake) I have been to SPTR several times. The staff has been awesome, the beer is still as loaded and varied as it was our first time, and the food I've tried (I've only tried the boar tacos, fried chicken, and pickles) has been tasty! This place rocks, the customers are friendly, and the overall vibe of the joint is positive. Well done!

Don't come here, you won't like it. I promise, it's a waste of your time. The mushroom-tofu scramble that I tasted and was delicious is not something you'd want. The sticky rice dumplings drizzled with soy sauce which were downright amazing is not something you'd be interested in. I can't imagine you'd appreciate the enfrijoladas with the black bean sauce and queso fresco. I don't even think you'd like spicy bloody marys that they make or their awesome beer selection. Really, I'm thinking of you here and trying to help you out. Move along. These aren't the droids you're looking for.

This place is great for dinner but go ahead and skip the brunch. Brunch is a bit overpriced and i ordered a bacon cheddar omelet and the cheese was not melted. Instead of shredded, it was just a slice of unmelted cheese and kind of ruined the whole consistency of the omelet. They also give you toast but have no jam to back it up. Stick to dinner and beers at this place. The dinner and beers are awesome.

went here for the first time since i moved to south philly. i heard rave reviews about it so i was very excited! the drinks were absolutely delicious (a cherry blossom mimosa!) and the food was ok. def not the best brunch i ever had, but still yummy. my friends both said they loved their food so i guess i just ordered the wrong thing. i ordered the breakfast tacos. one friend ordered the eggs and another ordered pancakes. sometimes the classics are the best way to go! anyways, i didn't give them 5 starts because the service was REALLY slow. maybe they were understaffed that day? the waitress was super nice, just very, very slow. the atmosphere was the best part about this place. we sat outside on a beautiful sunday. i will go back again, if nothing else but for the drinks haha :)

I'm definitely a fan of their beer selection. Been here a few times; never tried the food. I always go here for Beer Week, especially the Lagunitas 420 celebration. So after hearing so much about how great Chef Scott's food is I decided to try one of the special things he cooked up for the Lagunitas fest. One of the best breweries ever; if you're into bold, hoppy beers. I had the mac'n cheesesteak tacos which I thought were just O.K. Mac n cheese a little bland, meat not really flavorful either. Needed something to spice it up, some salsa fresca, sauce, something! Seemed uninspired and thought to myself I could do better; why did I just waste $12. Amazing beer made up for it. I would return to drink here, but would be hesitant to try food again. I know he can do better; or so I'm told.

SPTR just skyrocketed to the top of my pub list. I went here for lunch with a buddy of mine a few years ago, and I was so turned off by the miserable bartender, I sort of wrote the place off. Last night, one of my beer-loving comrades suggested we have dinner here. I looked up the tap list and menu online, found it promising, and decided to give it another go. I'm glad I did. We got there around 6:30. It was full, but not crowded. It was tough choosing a beer to start out with from the stellar selection. I went with the Allagash Fluxus, before moving on to the Duck Rabbit Doppelbock and Bruery Autumn Maple. For dinner I got the vegan hoagie. Lawd-a-mercy. It was enormous, and packed to the gills with tempeh, roasted portabellos, red onion, lettuce and tomato and slathered in vegan mayo. It was totally irresponsible to eat the whole thing, but I couldn't resist. The thick-cut steak fries where a nice change of pace. They had the perfect balance of crispy outside and soft potaoey goodness inside, and were generously (but not overly) salted. I also had a side of sauteed spinach with garlic and red pepper flakes. Our server was attentive, patient and friendly. A fine pub meal. Yeah, I'll be returning.

A cool place for a casual date. The menu is small, but everything I've ever had there was fantastic. The spinach artichoke dip is outstanding, and they're one of the few places I've found that gives you warm, soft FRESH pita, rather than rock hard baked or stale chips. It's not super loud, so you can actually talk to the person you're there with. The back room is a nice, out of the way section that looks cool and has a nice relaxing feel to it. The staff has never been overly friendly, but they were always courteous and on point with my orders, which is nice when you're trying to talk to a date and don't want to be interrupted. The prices and the beer selection are great. If I lived closer, I'd definitely go more often. The only knock against the place is the location. It's easy to get to from the subway, and the neighborhood isn't bad, but there isn't really anything else around it, so if you are planning a night out it doesn't really fit into the plans.

My roommate and I visited SPTR last night because we really wanted grilled cheeses and soup. We were so excited to go, especially because we were regulars there. We ended up having a very disappointing, awful experience. First of all, it was New Years Day and they seemed a little busy, so there were some things I could understand- like waiting 10 minutes for a server. My roommate ordered a beer, and I ordered a tequila sunrise and a water. I never received my water until later when I asked a different server who walked by, and It took literally 10-15 minutes for them to get me my tequila sunrise. After that, we finally ordered and the waitress informed us about the menu changed. She told us the grilled cheese and soup is now more of just a soup and small pieces of bread with cheese on them that are laid in the soup. We were pretty bummed out by this, and I ordered chicken wings because she told me soup would not be enough if I was hungry. We enjoyed the mac and cheese, and our soup wasn't bad, but it was really upsetting to just have 4 miniature slices of bread in your tomato soup. My chicken wings were unusually spicy and I only ate 2 out of the whole entree. I asked for blue cheese or ranch and they told me they didn't carry either. What kind of a restaurant doesn't carry blue cheese or ranch? We both sat there disappointed and unfulfilled. We waited what seemed like FOREVER to get our check. My roommate was really sick with a cold and just wanted to leave to go to CVS. We watched as our waitress was hanging out by the service bar talking to her co-workers. When she finally came back, I asked her if there was anything that could be done about my chicken wings that I did not eat, and will not eat. She explained to me, "unless the kitchen messes up, or I mess up- we can't refund your order and it says they are spicy on the menu." I was FLOORED. That is an acceptable response when I didn't even eat my dinner? She then said she would ask her manager. She returned and took off the $10.00 wings, which I was surprised about, but happy she did do it. I guess it is more important to be right that you didn't mess up, than to make your LOYAL customers happy. We were texting our friends that they completely changed their menu and no longer have our favorite items such as grilled cheese and fries that are now different. It really shocks me when I come across these incidences because I deal with them everyday as a restaurant manager myself. If my guest is clearly unhappy with the menu, service and dinner that they didn't eat, don't tell me there's nothing I can do because my server or the kitchen didn't mess up. Sadly, we will not back to South Philly Tap Room. So long grilled cheeses and prior menu that was way better!

I have been staying in the neighborhood so have been in almost daily. Chill vibe of locals, with comfy chairs, a tv, and then a more formal area to sit. I love the wild boar tacos, wings, soup, mozzarella salad. But the grilled cheese with lager tomato soup is the best!

The boar tacos are sublime. The poblano wings, however were messy and boring. Beer list remains strong. I keep coming back for those terrific tacos...

Lately, every time I reach the "sounds good, where should we meet up?" portion of the conversation, the answer's been "South Philly Tap Room!" I've been here 3 times in the past week, so these people are obviously doing things right. The drafts are well-chosen and diverse, with multiple and varied styles. The list changes all the time and always acknowledges the season (pumpkin cider in the fall, Christmas ale a little later in the fall, etc. etc.), and I love that. This is a good place to bring people who love double imperial hopmonster pales AND people who love malty chocolatey caramely coffee-y stouts AND adventurous types who just want to try something new. Vegetarians will do well here, and most of the food is priced well, in or around the $10 range, so you can eat and drink a couple pints without breaking the bank. The special potato tacos are super filling and they come with a salad that is basically barely chopped salsa fresca, with tons of cilantro (into it). The grilled cheese and tomato soup is my current favorite iteration of this comfort dish, with thick Texas toast, smoked cheddar, and a better-than-average side salad (I'm talking avocado) too. It gets a little loud on weekends, but I always seem to hear Iggy and Gang of Four over the din, which makes me feel right at home. The seating situation seems a little confusing when you first walk in, but it's spacious, so there will be enough room for you and your friends. Final note: awesome jukebox.

The food and beer selection are great. Our favorites specials have been the blue cornmeal pancakes, an open-faced chicken roasted sandwich and pan-seared trout. So far we haven't seen the pancakes or chicken roasted sandwich this past year, but we're still hoping... The two complaints (which makes it not 5 stars) are that it can get pretty loud- and as an old fart, I hate having to scream over the loud music and other people screaming over the loud music to hear my dinner companions. Also it can be somewhat annoying trying to get the "hostess" or servers attention that you seated yourself (outside tables) or to get a seat. But even with these complaints, the food and beer bring us back occasionally.

The grilled cheese is the main and usually only reason I venture to the sptr. It is the best I've ever had. Amaaaazing. I'm disappointed that it has since been removd from the menu. Now hey have the tomato soup with mini gr cheeses floating in the hot soup. They are more like large croutons. I'm not even sure if cheese was used. I remained hungry after my dish. Bring BACk the GRILLEd CHEESE!!!!!

I've been to the South Philly Taproom a few times. I don't think I need to write an extensive review. I believe that most people who are likely go there already know what I'm about to write: It has some of the best beer and food under one roof in all of Philadelphia. And a cool vibe on top of that. On one of the quite snowy nights this last week, I went out with my friend Danny for dinner. The beer list was great, as usual. I believe it was all American craft beer. There was a good selection of different styles, ABVs and regions in the country, which was awesome. I started with the Java Head stout from Troegs. This well made coffee stout paired well with the snowy evening. I had another drink, and tried a pair of Danny's, but I don't remember all of them. The beer list changes so often, that I don't really need to comment on what they were, because they're long gone. One annoying factor was how dark and loud this place can get. Granted, it was a Friday night, but we had trouble reading the menu and hearing each other. Partly that was due to the incredibly drunk table next to us, which went from funny to annoying a few moments. This place is cozy but not cramped, and I usually love it here, but on this evening the atmosphere could have been a bit better. Our server did a good job despite the fact that the place was pretty busy. The menu is a little small, but it's always accompanied with a nice amount of specials. We both ordered cheeseburgers for dinner. Before coming here, I've had the burger, and remember it being good. But it's more than that. It's excellent. Although paying $1 for the two small strips of bacon was a waste. Overall, it's one of my favorite burgers in the city. The bun and cheese are great, topped with lettuce, tomato and onion and special sauce. The meat is well seasoned and cooked. Overall, it's a great execution from every aspect. To boot, it's served with fries and pickled veggies. They serve it with a special "ketchup" which I didn't like, but you can get the real stuff by just asking. Bottom Line: I like this place for brunch, dinner, or just drinks. It has a great happy hour from 4 to 6. It's one of the best bars in the city. I just wish it was closer to my house. It's not getting the most outrageous lineup of beer, but I'd rather have a solid place that I can always count on. And that's exactly what SPTR is.

Wild Boar Tacos. Mmmm mmm good! Brunch on New Year's Day was awesome. Perfect place to stop in on my way to 2 street to relive the parade. The tacos were fab! The mac & Cheese extra fab! Cheesesteak sliders- delish, Pork Sandwich - flavorful ... I was with 6 people- I didn't eat all of this myself. Anyway, I'd def. check it out again. I liked the beer list also!

Remember when the apocalyptic destination in 'Shawn of the Dead' was The Pub? I think we can all relate to the very certain safety which lies in the bosom of ones favourite pub. I give the nod to The Taproom as my default Pub destination. Their beer list is balanced, and changes regularly. Someone behind the bar knows how to make a first-rate dirty martini, and some of the food is unexpectedly good. The cheese steak sliders and burger are both made with good quality meat, but the sauce (I suspect some nouvelle torison on a french dijon classic) which the chef has devised to accompany them, puts them in the 'remarkably good bar food' category. The tomato soup has a very controlled amount of heat, which makes it interesting and fun to eat. The grilled cheese is a modern (and tasty) variation on a classic. Most of the meals are accompanied by an array of artisan pickles. What a good idea to brighten up the palate with some tart pickled goodness. The Taproom is also agreeably affordable. $20 can provide enough food and drink for two people (during happy hour). With the only drawbacks being that it's a bit noisy and the chairs are uncomfortable, it's easy to give the Taproom 4 stars and a confident commendation.

Great spot! Being different can be risky, but do it right and I'll find it refreshing. The Tap Room was different in a very refreshing way, delicious home made ketchup (I think there's garlic in it), and I ordered a grilled cheese with tomato soup. Quick service, friendly staff and atmosphere. Parking is horrendous and it has a very "hipster" like crowd. Which makes sense. Hipsters are different and the Tap Room offers just that. Wide array of different beers, menu options and vegetables that all taste like pickles,

I love it here! Always an interesting beer selection. The food is amazing. The 3 Cheese Grilled Cheese & tomato soup is my favorite. The side salad is fresh and light, perfect pairing for any meal. Cozy atmosphere. So glad we found this place. We always take our visitors to SPTR and they have all loved it as much as we do :) Only reason this isn't 5 stars is that when they are hosting an event it is extremely loud.

Great beer list, solid menu with rare-misses. I can't say anything that hasn't already been said about this place. It's definitely worth checking out, and even going out of the way for. My personal favorites: tomato lager soup w/ mini grilled cheese, the mexican hot dog, mac & cheese and the cheesesteak 'sliders' (which are about the size of regular burgers on your typical potato roll) w/ sriracha mayo? (at least I think that's the sauce on 'em).

Actually I'm usually a fan of SPTR. I love so many things about it like it's great vibe, the beer selection and it's affordable menu. A few times though, I've had some problems with the kitchen's food that surprise me since this place has gotten quite a lot of props recently. Months ago my friend and I were shocked to have scarfed down (I was so starving) half of our burgers before realized they were salted at near toxic levels. It actually ruined my tongue for beer. The server was cool about it and offered another round but frankly I couldn't finish the one I had at that point. He took the burgers off our bill and that made us want to return. Last night we shared a few dishes and started with incredible boar tacos. They were perfect. The mac & cheese was just OK. The main course was the southern fried chicken platter. It was juicy, crispy and accompanied by a watermelon & mint salad. The problem was the chicken was really salty. It wasn't enough to ruin it or my beer but clearly over salted. Also, for some reason they salted the watermelon salad. I dont know if that's something you do to bring out the sweetness of the melon but frankly it was overdone and we ended up not eating it. Our beers were great and we really do like the quirky server, she's as weird as us I think. So in the future I believe I'm going to make a request for low salt on anything we order. Oh the dessert we had included a brownie, fried banana, ice cream and a bunch of other components. It would better be called the brownie disaster a friend that joined us said. The banana was breaded and deep fried! Ultimately the flavors didn't make much sense.... Did I mention how great the tacos were?

This place is THE best. The food is consistently amazing, the beer list is extensive with a great selection of bottles and cans as well as an ever-changing draft list, and the service is top notch. The pickles are probably my favorite, but the grilled cheese and tomato soup are great, the burger is awesome, and my bf and I went here for a special Valentines Day dinner and it was literally the best meal I had had in MONTHS. Seriously the only downside to SPTR is that I don't live closer (and believe me, I've considered moving closer). :)

Great draft beer list. Lunch menu is a little too short for my liking. Bad service however on my last, and final, visit. I stopped in for lunch, the place was empty at 1pm, mid-week. I was thinking of some food and several pints. The bartender working barely spoke to me when I came in an ordered and not at all after that. I had a fantastic sandwich and a great beer but a second beer wasn't offered until I had finished my food and had had enough watching tv with mute on. It got worse after that, I posted on twitter that SPTR has great beer and food but poor bartender service. Whomever runs their twitter account chose to call me out rather than ask what happened. They didn't seem to care very much about a customer with a complaint. I won't be back. There are plenty of places in Phila. to get draft beer.

  • Leonard P.

Brought here by some friends during a recent trip to Phila for a wedding, and I was duly impressed; the service was top-notch, and while every other joint in Passyunk was crammed to the rafters, they managed to find us a nice table for a group of eight with hardly any delay. The liquor selection was solid if not particularly creative, and the food, likewise, was better than standard gastropub quality but not enough to make it a memorable restaurant in its own right. But overall, it was very good, and really went out of its way to make a good impression on us. It's always hard to judge a place based on a single visit, but I'd love the chance to go back again and confirm SPTR is worth those four stars.

There are several reasons I am giving this bar my 5 star approval so Ill cut right to the chase: I frequent the bar 2-3 times a month on average. 1. They serve quality food, consistently. 2. The service even when busy is more acceptable than most bars. 3. They have a better burger than Royal Tavern (yes the Royal Tavern burger being the best burger is an absolute myth, anyone can make a better burger and they do) 4. They have the best grilled cheese and tomato soup. (And it rivals the Abbey circa 2006) 5. They are often times $1 dollar cheaper than the other bars in the city and their quality is a notch higher. That if you ask me is the deal maker in these economic times of hardship. I have to give a few cons only on deserts. 1. Rotate the desert menu more often or expand it. 2. Make sure the center of the pot brownie is hot! 3. You don't have to make the desert as big as the entree to make people happy.

I love this quaint little place located in an otherwise residential area West of Passyunk. The beer selection is always good and the grub isn't too bad either. Their joint coffee enterprise across the way isn't too bad either.

Have not ever been disappointed on any of my visits to this place. And it's been many. Even better is when they offer up a deal on restaurant.com . Yeah it has me comin back for more and more, So between all of my friends, i'd say we've tried the whole food menu. My faves? Tomato Lager soup and grilled cheese sammich, Wild boar tacos, if only they weren't the tiniest of taco sizes, but so good,,, the roasted beet salad... and of course the 100% local grassfed, beer braised bacon cheeseburger. Helllls yeahhh! Also the mac n cheese is creamy and delish too.

Whether it's an actual improvement or an improvement in my head, more recent visits have yielded much tastier food. Most recently I had the pork sandwich. The bread came out very soggy but it was really tasty. If you order the side salad it's a big portion with olives and all. This past spring on the specials they had a pulled chicken sandwich, recommended by the waitress, that was literally among the most delicious things I have ever eaten in a bar. For this sandwich alone as well as a continually impressive beer list and nice atmosphere I'd like to bump up to 5 stars.

South Philly Taproom is one of those spots that my friends always mention and I feel left out of the conversation. I hem and haw about how its located in South Philly--obviously--and I am usually not down there and blah blah blah, I have heard good things, whatever, one day I plan to check it out... Guys! I can participate in the SPTR lovefest now! I stopped by with a friend on a recent Friday night. The low-key atmosphere and immediate availability of a table created a good first impression. Service was attentive and remained so throughout the meal. For a place with "taproom" right in the name, I kind of expected to be impressed by the brews; I was not, but the selection was still more than satisfactory. A decent variety of beers were on tap, though it was mostly limited to beers/breweries that are widely available in Philly. (The bottle list could be deeper, but that is not really an issue.) Plenty of spots go to local brews. Prices range from $4-$7. For appetizers, we started with "Mexican construction worker" headcheese tacos ($1/special), because everyone loves getting brain. We also ordered a half-dozen oysters with a Dogfish Head Festina Peche sauce ($2 ea./special), because [another innuendo]. The tacos were prepared in a manner that might calm the nerves of any diner squeamish over the prospect of consuming headcheese. The oysters were perfectly shucked and the Festina Peche sauce subtle but complimentary. For entrees, I chose the fried chicken dinner ($12/special) and my dining companion opted for the tomato lager soup & grilled cheese ($9/regular menu). Not usually a huge grilled cheese fan, but the three cheeses piled on Texas toast-like seasoned bread was killer; the tomato lager soup I liked, but found a bit too booze-y. Came with a side salad, which was a side salad. New paragraph for the fried chicken! ('Cause it earned it.) This fried chicken was the best fried chicken I have ever eaten. Perfectly seasoned & crispy skin, moist & flavorful meat, just a real treat for my mouth. That would be good enough but it was also served with cornbread (eh), the porkiest/unhealthiest/most delicious collards in the world and mac & cheese that would be the envy of anyone's mama. If you go to SPTR and see fried chicken on the menu, GET AT IT. South Philly Taproom was a great experience on all counts. Even though its out of my way, I definitely plan to return here.

If the cook cannot man up and take some criticism, he should be replaced. The point of going out to eat is to have things cooked to how you want it. If a patron asks for a burger that is pink in the middle, you should fucking make it that way and not give your staff a hard time if it gets returned. Man up and cook what your guests ask for and not what you think they should have.

Wowza. We trekked down to SPTR a few days before New Year's Eve and man, was it worth it. We had a table of 12 and did not make a reservation (duh) so we sat at the bar. I had the tomato soup and chopped salad. The tomato soup was awesome and came with two mini grilled cheeses floating in it. The salad was also delicious and came with your choice of dressing. I am about 6 months pregnant and the bartenders were so nice and accomodating even when I was not drinking and taking up a barstool. My husband had grilled cheese and loved it and another friend of ours had a burger, which he had been talking about since he walked in. SPTR is cozy and the food is great. What a perfect combo!

Being a vegetarian, this was one of my go - to spots since I've lived here. Their crispy potato tacos, which were almost always on the specials menu, are AMAZING. Not to mention the grilled cheese!!! I was so disappointed to find out that they are no longer offering specials, just a limited menu that will apparently "rotate" every so often. Their prices went up, and you no longer get a choice of sides with your sandwich, only fries. The worst part? No potato tacos OR grilled cheese! They were known city - wide for their grilled cheese, why take it off the menu????? The only answer I got was "they'll probably be on the menu again at some point." SPTR, you've disappointed me.

SPTR made my day - wow. We stopped in to try the Kentucky Breakfast Stout during Philly Beer Week and make a brunch of it. First off - this stout was incredible. Like creamy chocolate/coffee. Wow. Too bad I have to wait till next year or drive to Michigan to have it again. I ordered an asparagus/tomato/ricotta fratatta special that was absolutely delicious. Their homefries are perfect and the ketchup served with them has a kick of something awesome mixed in. I was given butter with sea salt to spread on my toast that took it to another level. I tried some of the mac and cheese and that was also so so good. Everything was so fresh and flavorful. My friends loved their dishes - the wild boar tacos, the homemade sausage, and enfrijolatas. The regular beer menu looked killer, and I was struck by how large the place is. I felt like we had a lot of space and didn't feel rushed at all. The wait staff was friendly and efficient. Overall, such an enjoyable experience. I will def have brunch here again, and I hope to come back every other part of the day too!

We came down for the Wheat Beer Fest and stayed for dinner! SPTR pulled off their very cool annual event with many many wheat beers, music, and festive atmosphere. We headed inside as the fest was winding down for some dinner. They have a great beer list and a very inventive pub menu. We ordered the fried pickles - which I was pleased to see were in slices (ahem TRIUMPH) with a nice spicy dipping sauce. I had the BBQ chicken sandwich, which came on an onion roll and topped with slaw and a side of fries. This sandwich did suffer from the "cooked so long it's dry" mentality. Juicy flavorful chicken, tangy slaw, soft roll. It was really divine. If this were a bit closer to our 'hood it would be dangerous.

Finally made my first visit to SPTR thanks to yelp. It's pretty far from my hood, so although I had heard good things, I just hadn't made the trip. Now that I've been there, I hope to make the trips more frequent. I went with a headcheese taco, and the mac and cheese. The taco was good, although I thought the jalapeno overwhelmed the headcheese a little. The mac and cheese was awesome. It was very creamy, and had fried onions and scallions, that added a nice bright flavor to balance out the richness. I tried a wing as well, which had an awesome spicy, dry rub.

Imagine a restaurant insanely packed with dozens of overheated, hungry runners after the Broad Street Run. This was what we came across on a beautiful Sunday afternoon (with us being a few of those hungry runners). The staff was slammed but STILL SMILING. There is nothing more annoying then when you are not clued in to what position the kitchen and bar is in if they are really behind. The waitress was the SWEETEST and explained what would take awhile. She kept us hydrated knowing we were runners and brought out a bowl of water for our dog. The food was great! A post-run Grilled Cheese, "Poor Man's" Mimosa and a Vegan Wrap. If I wasn't so worn, I could have stayed there all afternoon. Dig it.

This place can get jammed. They had a really good selection of beer and the food was good as well. We came in very late with a huge group of 12 or so and they helped seat us even though they were very busy which is why I give them a 4 star. I had the slider plate which had 2 medium size sandwiches of chopped steak. The food prices though were rather high for a pub.

Wait... I LOVE THIS PLACE! My trips to South Philly are just going to have to become more frequent... I tried the burger last night and I can't stop thinking about it. We got a plate of the old faithful mac and cheese for the table- everyone loved it, obviously. The burger was well seasoned and came with fries or a salad. I love that this place doesn't skimp on the fries- they're huge wedges of potato fried to perfection and come with their house-made ketchup. Pair these with the burger and I'm dying happy. I know it's a good restaurant when I a.) can't decide what to order because there are so many awesome things on the menu, and b.) wake up craving the food at 8am. Seriously, who wants a burger at 8am? Me, as long as it's from SPTR. Next trip I'm going to OWN that fried PB&J. You best believe it.

In my eyes, this place is only okay. I have been there a bunch of times for lunch and dinner trying to make it live up to the hype that everyone gives it, but I just can't. This is not one of the best burgers in town. It is only okay. Along with all of the other food I've tried - which is not many things, since the menu is pretty small, and it hasn't rotated in a little while. The beer selection is very good. Service is spotty. I will probably keep going because it is close to my house and all of my friends like it and maybe one day I will figure out what everyone is talking about.

Came for brunch on Sunday. Place is very hipster cool inside. Jorjitos egg dish --- eggs, potatoes, chorizo, hollandaise sauce --- off the hook delicious. Wild boar tacos and mac & cheese were also top notch. Great beer selection, can't go wrong. Takes credit cards which is a plus.

I was in a mood the day I came to SPTR for the first time. I was like, "why do we have to come all the way out here?" "Why is this area so dirty?" "There's bits of Philly flying in my eyes!" "This better be good or else!" And so on and so forth. But DANG I loved this place! It's open and airy, inviting, with friendly staff and a nice looking crowd. We filled our bellies with brunch and some beers, while chatting with friends, listening to good tunes, and glancing occasionally at the Flyers game. I had the vegan hoagie with a side of pasta salad and a cup of spicy pickled veggies. My beau had the cheese steak omelet. We both very much enjoyed our food and drinks, and I cleared my plate like a good little eater. During our dinning experience, a friend texted me and asked how I could go to his favorite place and not invite him, after seeing my check-in. I had no idea he loved this place, but now I know why and I heart it too!

A friend & I dropped in for an afternoon beer while we were waiting for some work to be done at my house. He recommended the place for it's beer...the good food was a bonus. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable, pouring us a few samples before we decided on a pint...I had the Riverhorse Oatmeal Milk Stout (very good smoked flavor with decent medium body) and my friend had the Pliny the Elder Double IPA. When we asked about food, the bartender mentioned that some of the latino guys working in the kitchen had been sharing their recipe for handmade tortillas and my friend, being a fan of authentic Mexican cuisine jumped on the Boar soft tacos, served with a pepper sauce. I had the Seafood Springroll [picture above]...a crispy treat that was your standard GBD on the outside, but had a steamy soft inside owing to the the way the shrimp & I'm guessing crabmeat liquid had mingled into the roll as it fried. Served with a sweet/spicy peanutty dip and a more tangy fruity chop or compote, the two oversized springrolls made for a great midday snack. I'll have to come back to see what the nightlife is like, but SPTR made for a great mid-day beer-diversion. I'd have to come back and see if the same atmosphere & level of good service held up during peak times before I give it a fourth star.

My boyfriend and I come here on a regular basis (at least once a week) and we always enjoy the food, service and atmosphere. I'm a transplant from outside of Philly and honestly, I'm not a fan, but this place makes me look at the "city of brotherly love" with a bit more "love" than disdain.

    (5)
  • Jeff L.

The service here was very good. Waitstaff was attentive and willing to let me get a taste of some of the variety of craft beers. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed, but the food is the sad part of this restaurant. My wife and I like organic, grass-fed beef. SPTR menu had advertised that they had hamburgers with organic beef. Unfortunately, the chef knows only one spice...SALT. If you like salty food, you'll LOVE this place. The clams in broth were salty, my wife's pork sandwich was salty and my $11 Organic Grass-Fed burger was so salty, I could barely eat it. I would go here again, only if I were in the neighborhood, but only for beer.

I used to love you....done, over. I was excited to spend my afternoon having lunch with my husband who works way too much. We decided to go to SPTR...which is mere blocks away from our house. We walk in to find a very empty bar and dining room....but yet the staff seemed to be on methadone (as usual), moving at a snails pace with blank stares. Now onto the food....the wings were the size of pigeon legs, I have literally never seen smaller wings, I tried to order something that I was told...."we're out of". The food has gone down hill at this place, and the SERVICE STINKS, slow, unfriendly....bordering on "snobby hipster" which I am so sick of. The south Philly/Passyunk restaurant scene is blowing up...so SPTR if you wan't to keep your head above water you better step it up with the kitchen and with the staff. There are plenty of great restaurants within walking distance of our house, we won't be back to SPTR.

There is something unholy about the idea of such a trendy gastropub existing this far into South Philly. I just can't wrap my mind around the concept of 15th and Mifflin being a popular spot to be seen. Of course, this wouldn't affect my judgment of SPTR. It just feels weird. The beers here are good but that's not strong enough of an attractor for me to compensate for the decent food and horrendous service. The first time I came to the Tap Room, the waitress seemed annoyed that I had interest in watching the hockey game on TV. She told me I could not order the side dish I wanted, as it was not available by itself. Five minutes later, she carried the same item she denied me right by my face to one of her friends sitting at the bar. They chatted it up and ate the dish together. Really? That was my worst experience but I found few redeeming qualities in following trips. I can understand the appeal of the South Philly Tap Room but my ability to enjoy this bar has been marred beyond repair.

The venerable SPTR; the last frontier of the O.G. Phila gastropubs - built to last. Step into the bar and step back in time.. but not that far back. To like 2005. Kenzingers are $1.50 and Wild Boar tacos are $5 during Happy Hour. The bartenders are knowledgable, passionate, and, though confident, are friendly and want you to enjoy your experience. Ideal for any foodie, hipster, beer nerd, bro, ladies' night, early bird elderly couple, boozehound, folk band, hairdresser, power lunch, stoner, lawyer, etc., this place has got something for everyone; however, unlike some other spots in town, it doesn't try to be five things at once. It's an understated, casual, new American eatery that is better balanced and more likely to stand up to time, despite its location a bit farther south and west than some are used to trekking, than any other gastropub in town. I've taken so many different relatives and friends here over the past six or seven years and everyone always has left beaming (and usually inebriated). This is the most consistent joint in all aspects: if you want a delicious meal (the food keeps getting better) and a gnarly beer (PBC, Firestone Walker, and Founders are regulars, among several other local and domestic craft brews) at a fantastic price (especially during happy hour - but normal prices are reasonable too), just hop the BSL and make a night of it.

I just don't get it. I must have a mental block when it comes to South Philly Tap Room. Because, I keep trying to like it - mainly because everyone raves about it and I have some serious FOMO that I am missing out on a wonderful place - but every time I go to SPTR I find myself wishing I did not order food. The food is just not good bar food. Nothing is special, and I feel like my food is always facing the classic Goldilocks dilemma; i.e. under or over cooked, under or over seasoned, etc. It is never just right. All in all, I would never recommend SPTR to someone who wants to consume food - but maybe if they want to hang and go for a drink...or maybe not, because what if you get hungry???????

  • Rebecca J.

Great food, but the experience was soured by the waitress who refused to serve us for no reason other than we gave her a weird look? She glared at us from the moment we arrived. The other waitress's tried to serve us but she kept pulling them away, making a scene. I wish she would have personally confronted us so I could better understand what we were doing to piss her off. Anyways, two stars for their great pickles and the burger ranks alongside hawthorns in my opinion.

Been here for a late night and brunch and simply loved it each time! Their brunch menu is awesome and they give you so much food! Their fries are also amazeballz! Oh and if you come for brunch GET THE BACON! I just wish that this place was a little close to Old City...but I gladly trek across the city to come here! This place is great to just come and hang or come with a group of people!

Great, off-the-beaten-path gastropub. The homemade ketchup was great - as we're all of the other sauces on our burger and sandwich. The highlight of the meal was the wild boar taco starter. We started with them and then our second order came after our meal. We couldn't have just one. Yum. I'd love to return to see what the scene is like on a weekend. I bet it's fun - seemed like a good crowd with a good beer selection.

I love their draft selection. I'm always trying new & unexpected beers when I come here. Ginger Lemongrass Cider..yes please! Grab a seat outside if you can, esp if the weather is nice. The food is pretty freakin good too.. great burger and amazing fried pickles! Service can be hit or miss, but usually a hit. Awesome little neighborhood bar.

The one thing they were known for and they took it off the menu. The grilled cheese was the sole reason the SPTR was one of my lunch spot destinations. philadelphia.cbslocal.co… Rest of their food isn't bad but why do away with their signature sandwhich??

I really want to understand the obsession with SPTR but the experience was kind of lackluster after all the hype. It took forever to get a table and there really is nowhere to wait. The bar was crowded and it was snowing outside. What are your options? Be in everyone's way. The on point beer selection ameliorated annoyance here. Once we were seated, I guess I should have done more research because I was pretty shocked when we got our tiny menu. Luckily, everything on it looked good. We got sliders as and app and they ruled. I got a green tomato salad that was pretty good and my fellow diners enjoyed their respective dishes. The best thing on our table by far was the meatloaf that came with this amazing mac and cheese. Get that if you go. The service was pretty good, no complaints. I'm not dying to go back but the experience was fine. I still prefer Memphis Taproom. Have to give brunch a shot sometime....

went here for dinner last night! so good! the apps were 1/2 price during happy hour - until 6. wild boar tacos - really really good! mac & cheese is a must get!! bacon, jalapenopeppers & a corn bread crumble. YUMMM!!!! we also got the sea scallops frittata - that was also great! and a veg dish with black beans and other stuff. SO SO SO GOOD! so glad we went there! will def. be going back with the hubs!

Wild boar tacos! I could seriously end the review right there to justify five stars. Combining semi-spicy pork with some guacamole, cheese and a squirt of lime, all in two soft shell tortillas was a tasty and satisfying combination. They were so good, and it's just an appetizer! Of course, the widely noted beer selection is also phenomenal and the bar and restaurant are dark, warm and inviting. SPTR is definitely a South Philly gem that deserves its consistent citywide accolades.

I still like the ambience of this neighborhood bar. Last night however I experienced terrible service. I ordered soup. My friend with an entrée was finished eating before my soup even arrived. The waitress was completely unapologetic ans simply said she delivered it to the wrong table. I was not happy and I left hungry.

Finally had a chance to go here after seeing it on Triple D. We showed up after they had their wheat beer festival all day. The place was about 1/3 filled and i was expecting it to be packed. i'll preface this review by saying that i had an awful day, and really just wanted dinner and a beer with my fiancé. we went to south philly tap room, and really loved the atmosphere. the menu was pretty lacking for vegetarians (i understand this changes, but i'm reviewing based on this particular experience), the options were pricy ($9 for a tomato sandwich) and there were no modifications allowed to any orders (i was happy to pay extra to add cheese, which was available for other menu items, but no substitutions or modifications to the menu even with extra charges). i ordered a beer, and the keg proceeded to kick. i ordered a replacement and the beer was warm. when i ordered a follow up, i was given something that was "just like" what i ordered, that the bar had since run out of. all in all, i've heard really good things but i just had a series of negative components that led to this review.

Yeah, this place is pretty much as good as it gets. I travel far to get there and it is worth it. I really don't need to say much. Great environment. Great food. Great service. Great looking crowd. I stared at other patrons as much as I enjoyed the food O:). MEATLOAF Mac'n'Cheese. Dare I say more? Seriously, get it. Don't think, just order it. Don't look at the specials, don't eat ANYTHING before coming in. Get this now. I can't stop thinking about the meatloaf.

I enjoyed this little gem tucked away in the western side of broad ...south Philly. Don't get trapped in the few tables in the front. There are plenty more in the back. It has a quaint atmosphere with a family style charm. I had a nice dark beer and fries & my friend had the amazing grill cheese and lager tomato soup. There homemade ketchup really kicks the food up a notch and with reasonable prices and portions you won't leave there hungry or with an empty wallet. The atmosphere is like most Philly bars, laid back and chill. Definitely a good place to bring kids (as I saw a few munchkins milling about). Come for the chill atmosphere, stay for the delicious bar food that's kicked up a notch.

I've had very hit or miss food here. The service is great, but sometimes the meal just doesn't seem worth it for the price. I appreciate that they have good vegetarian options but this place is miles away from Royal Tavern. Great concepts, but just mediocre execution. They'll get their act together sooner or later! Also, not to sound like a hipster asshole but like, how can you be a bar in Philly without having PBR or some other $3 equivalent?

  • Kory S.

I'm not sure my love of this place is even in line with what they are hoping to inspire in their patrons. Let me make this expressly clear-this is our favorite restaurant in Philadelphia. For three years it was our go-to dinner spot for Sunday dinner. Then when we moved to DC it became our stop-off on the way to New York. It's perfect. Where friends were lauding the latest place with bacon-infused bacon wrapped in a bacon emulsion or the place with 100 beers and a fireplace, we were going to a place that had food so good we raved about ROAST CHICKEN... at a gastropub! In fact I don't think I even had brunch here for the first year as we waded our way through premade bloody Mary's and 1 hour waits for French toast elsewhere. The Food- it is incredible. It's not the big portions that make some popular. It's not the excess use of pork or gravy or vats of frying grease. It is REALLY well made food. It's the subtlety of tomato soup that has the acid of fresh tomatoes. It is the grilled cheese that has more cheese than I've ever seen but is still buttery and crispy enough to find its way into your soup every bite. It's THE BEST MAC AND CHEESE IN PHILLY. It's a rotating menu that forces you to try the chicken dish despite your resolve that it's a suckers bet at most restaurants. Wild Boar Tacos so moist it rivals lard cooked carnitas. The Beer- okay it's not the best beer list in the city. They are often out of bottles of stuff and the waitresses have a fairly green level of knowledge of their list. That's not why I'm here. What they do have are local beers from every genre with a focus on the staples you like. I could always get a Lancaster Milk Stout or a Left Hand Something or Other. There's even a nitro option most of the time. They also always have something you haven't tried yet. No it's not some Dogfish Head seasonal with anise and curry in it. It's a basic staple from somewhere new that wont disappoint. Maybe that's the overall point.... This place NEVER disappoints. Service- it's good not great. But in the world of Philly hipster gastropubs it's fine dining. We were far from recognizable faces so that didn't influence their likelihood of treating us well. We didn't have beards and I probably wore a button down more than once. Point is we shouldn't have had good service. They were always nice, generally fast-ish, but never jerks. I hate saying that a place is good bc they weren't jerks but when you go to Devils Den and have a waiter laugh at your wife when asked for a recommendation similar to Yuengling or you go to PoPE and never hear the words thank you or you're welcome it is nice to feel comfortable. One MAJOR criticism-- I WANT A TSHIRT. Make more. Please. Thank you.

SPTR has a really good and well priced beer selection. The food menu is small, and to be honest I am not a huge fan. I usually go with the beet salad, or vegan hoagie, both are good. The vegan hoagie is tempeh, marinated mushrooms, veggies and a "mayo" that tastes like tzatziki. The side salad is over dressed but has big chunks of avocado in it. I wish the bar had more snacky items to order while having beers, I think a fried cheese situation or roasted vegetable board would be great to have with the higher alcohol beers. I will probably keep coming here since I live so close and the beer selection is good, but I will avoid having dinner here.

South Philly Tap Room is everything a neighborhood bar should be- walkable from my house, plenty of seating, good music, great food, and of course, a great beer list. I've brought out of town guests here for years now, because there are always food and drink options that appeal to everyone. I love that they have so many veg-friendly options. On my last visit, I was craving some comfort food so I ordered their grilled cheese with tomato soup. The soup was one of the best tomato soups I've ever had! I think it's made with beer, so it lightened up the soup a bit, while giving it an awesome flavor. The grilled cheese was a fat stack of gooey, cheesey goodness. Yum! My husband ordered the falafal salad, which also was delicious. On my other visits, I've tried a number of their other options- all of which were great. Just be aware the menu is a bit small, in case you have picky eaters in your group. SPTR is a great spot for a casual meal or drink or both! Highly recommended!

I'm not sure why it didn't cross my mind sooner to hit SPTR for brunch, but now that I've experienced its greatness, my trips across Broad to some of my usual spots will become less frequent. The bloody Mary was everything I hoped for and more. While Royal Tavern still holds it down as my favorite, South Philly Tap Room's version came sodamnclose. Spicy, salty, celery-tinted deliciousness with a kick. Next up was an app to share: southern fried chicken wings with blue cheese dipping sauce and collard greens. As I've said before, this is some of the best fried chicken to be had in this city. We were also surprised by a round of oysters from the chef, which were super refreshing and tasty. Deciding on mains proved quite difficult, but I eventually went with Jorjito's enfrijoladas, a lovely plate filled with an egg-topped tortilla, black beans, queso fresco and a slivered red onion salad. Delicious. A dining companion ordered the Philly cheesesteak omelet, which was huge and topped with shreds of iceberg and diced tomato and accompanied by a side salad, breakfast potatoes and toast. Ridiculous. I'll be ordering this to reward myself after a long run or a stint on American Gladiators. That is one manly meal right there. SPTR just skyrocketed to the top of my brunch picks.

The food was okay -- overpriced drafts and brunch/sandwiches. Pretentious hipster staff that could not be bothered to wait tables makes it difficult to get a beer. I'm sorry but if you are in the service industry, try to leave the "Oh God, I'm so anti-establishment" attitude at home in Fishtown.

SPTR was the first stop on my birthday bar crawl extravaganza, and we had a nice time here. It was actually the second time I've been here, making it twice that we enjoyed our experience at SPTR. The beer selection here, as the name suggests, is quite good. The thing they get most right is getting beers that fall outside the current usual suspects, even for beer geeks. I know that the following sentiment will sound obnoxious (and it is), but please bear with me for a minute. As a total beer snob, one grows ever so weary of looking at a beer list and thinking "I've had all of these. Why can't places get something outside of what all of the rest of the craft bars are serving." Well, at SPTR, you have a shot at not feeling this way. The two times I've been here, I've had some fantastic beers outside of the current trends. The first time I was here, earlier in the year, I had the Springhouse Gruesome Chocolate-Peanut Butter beer, which is fantastic. Last time I was here, I had a great brown ale from Saucony Creek. Great place if you're a beer geek and want a shot at trying something new. The food is also quite tasty. I had the vegan hoagie (and then proceeded to de-veganize it by adding the delicious sharp provolone chunks to it). With grilled eggplant, broccoli rabe (which tasted like they were properly blanched to remove the bitterness), and other veggies. They also use a spicy mayo which adds a little heat. Very nice. My wife got the wild boar tacos, which she loved, and we shared the awesome homemade pickles (def get these). Service was OK. The bartenders were not the most ebullient crowd, but they were efficient with our food and drinks. All in all, I'd recommend a stop here.

So I heard great things about Philly tap room. My friends from la came to town to visit me and I decided to try out brunch with them for the first time. The mimosa our lovely waitress made was amazing and everyone was very attentive. I got a basic breakfast two eggs over easy home fries and scrapple. The over easy eggs were very runny and not in the good way in the egg white is raw way. The two stars all come down to one thing, the scrapple. An abomination of scrapple. My friends heard about our native scrapple and waned to try it now they will never try it again. You fried my scrapple and that, that is just wrong disturbing even. I'll go back for drinks.

They continue to execute and improve on the model. Menu continues to be varied and very well executed. The tomato soup is one of a kind. The grilled cheese is gooey lichous . Now with mixology menu, they are rounding out the offering. I am of the SPTR family....

Went for the first time last week, this place is great! We arrived in time for happy hour, great specials apps and select tAp beer are half priced, Brussel sprout app and Mac n cheese are to die for! Fries and homemade ketchup were also yum, great atmosphere will definitely go back!!

Went here yesterday for the first time in about a year because I was craving the tomato bisque. The soup was fantastic, but the service was awful. The server was disinterested and acted as if we were bothering her the whole time. Our draft beers and waters tasted/smelled like incense. The bottle beer my friended ordered was warm, and when we told the server we were using the ice for the warm beer, the response was 'Gotcha." All 4 of us at our table have worked in the service industry, and 3/4 of us still do. We're easy-to-please and are great tippers (usually), but we decided to leave and eat dinner elsewhere just because of our service. Great soup, but not worth the trip.

Stopped for a pre hockey game casual dinner at this small corner bar during happy hour. Ended up just doing apps and snacks for myself while the hubby got the pork sandwich. Everything was delicious, most surprisingly the head cheese tacos which sounded scary gross but were really tasty! Don't fear the pig face!! Featured cocktails were nice, and plenty of good beers on tap with one on nitro and one on the beer engine. The roasted Brussels sprouts were crazy good and the fries were actual potatoes, not those hideous, breaded, fake, extruded things. Bad fries are a deal-breaker for me, and theirs were hot and crisp and worth ordering on their own. They had several items clearly marked as vegan or vegetarian even though the menu is small, so there really is something for everyone. As an added bonus the Christmas decor made the whole place seem extra cozy. This place is going into the rotation, I can't wait to go back and try more stuff.

We came here on a quiet afternoon because of the rave reviews on Yelp, but meh. The wild boar tacos are worth trying; they are very yummy and spicy. We also ordered the cheeseburger-very underwhelming, smothered in their house sauce that looked, smelled, and tasted mostly like plain mustard. Not sure what the fuss was about there. Also, I asked for the burger to be cooked medium well, and I was told they only cook burgers rare, medium, or well. Nothing in between. I asked for the meatloaf with pasta salad, instead of mac and cheese (dairy allergy). Nothing doing. They make absolutely no substitutions. Which would be fine if it in some way compromised the vision of the food, but this is not high-brow fare. Its at best so-so pub food. But if you like spicy, come here. They don't seem to flavor with anything else but cracked pepper and red chili.

This has become my go-to gastropub for a really slammin meal. I have only been here in the early or middle afternoon, so the service has always been great. They always have a solid draft list and the servers are quick to offer their recommendations if you are torn. Many restaurants seem to have a hard time when preparing dishes with tempeh but SPTR doesn't belong on that list at all. The vegan hoagie is super good and HUGE. The 3 cheese grilled cheese with tomato lager soup is what dreams are made of. Additionally, I am a mac & cheese snob and this is one of the best I've had in the city. If there is a slight chance you have room for dessert, definitely go with the lemon pudding with black pepper cookies.

I recently stopped by the SPTR on a thursday evening before a concert at well fargo. The place was pretty much empty except for a few patrons at the bar. THis is about my 4th time here and the other 3 times were 5 star experiences. For food, service and price, this has gone down to 3 stars. It seems that whenever a place get a buzz going or is featured on some food network show, they stop trying. Maybe this is the case with SPTR. First, it's very rare that I don't find a beer that I like from the 12 or so on tap but this was the case tonight. THey seemed to have too many novelty beers, like super dark flavored porter or way too expensive 8 oz. funky belgians with very high alcohal content. I ordered a luke warm founders pale ale and it was adequate but didn't exactley provide the escape that a good first beer does. But, the attitude from our too cool waitress didn't help either. I was here with my mother and girlfriend and my mom had a alot of questions about the weird beers on tap and our waitress either seemed annoyed to have to answer them and when she did answer, just kind of said it was good or bad. she just wanted us to decide and shut up. Sorry but my mother is fussy about her beer. My girlfreind decided on an overpriced belgian, which came out in a wine glass and cost $8. Somehow, that just isn't right. THe waitress exuded her I'm cooler than you attitude the entire evening with her sassy, impatient answers and slow ass service. I asked for a glass of water 3 times before I got it. NOw for the food, I ordered the asperagus melt, My mom had the vegan fritatta and my girlfreind got the cheeseburger. All in all the food was quite tasty , a good portion and well seasoned. and everyone agreed on that. My biggest problem though, was the lack of choices. I was used to seeing the vegan hoagie and other vegetarian items but they were not there . The menu seems to have shrunk . I hope our waitress was an anomoly because I havn't experienced that bull**** attitude here before. THe bartender was friendly as was another man who worked there who thanked us for coming. But, because of her and the selections of food and beer, I give this 3 stars. I hope SPTR goes back to its classic dishes because that is why I had great experiences here before.

Been here multiple times. The menu doesn't excite me at all. Once the burger was great now it's just a normal burger AND you have to pay extra for fries?!!? Great great beer selection tho.

A friend and I stopped in on a Wednesday night and it was packed. One whiff of the food and a glimpse of the beer list and I understood why. You know when you walk into a place and have a good (or sometimes bad) feeling as soon as you put your foot down? That's how I felt here, in the good way. People were just chillin' and I got the sense that everyone was so satisfied. We walked past the content crowd and grabbed a two-top in the back, by the kitchen. MISTAKE. I couldn't stop staring at the food in the window. Bummer that I just finished a sizeable dinner. Anyway, I forced my focus to the suds selection: about 12 taps and a firkin with another 30ish bottles available. Winner, winner, wish I didn't already eat dinner! Okay, enough. I ordered two great beers, enjoyed great company and mentally plotted my next visit.

I really just wish they had sausage links instead of sausage patties. And the servings are a little small. But i do like this place, it's got good vibes and everyone is friendly. The brunch was really good.

I've been there twice for dinner and got the meatloaf. And twice the serving was so big that I had enough for lunch the next day. Great beer selection too. I need a hoodie from this place.

I have grown a little wary or maybe weary of brunch. The hair of the dog seems to be less a cure and more a temptress leading to useless napping, or on my thirteenth beer by halftime Steve. I have also become tired of the "It's brunch" so service is out the window gig. Even my favorite dinning spots have come up small for brunch. The problem is my Wife loves it. The solution is the South Philly Taproom. I have been to the Taproom once before and found it to be adequate, but forgettable. The kind of place I find difficult to review. I am glad i didn't until now. Brunch was great! The bartender was friendly with a smile. the servers were quick and pleasant. it wasn't crowded, but the mix of folks who were there was interesting. The food was very good, simple and tasty. The eggs were a little dry, but lots of people like them that way. I am embarrassed to tell you what I ordered, but it was delicious, arteries be dammed. The TVs were on and tuned to the pregame, but the music was also loud enough to hear. As in Alexandra W.'s review, they get points for playing The Smiths. Heaven knows I wasn't miserable then

SPTR is what a local gastro-pub (I know that term is getting played out) should be. Great food that's better than many 'proper' restaurants. A recent highlight was Saturday brunch. Had the most delicious tomato soup with mini-grilled cheeses in it. Then the steak and eggs benedict. Outstanding! Great beer selection, and just as important, they know about the beers/cocktails they sell. Another highlight, at least for me, is the excellent music. It's not a music venue but the ambient music is terrific (think XPN2). Last time I was there I neglected to look, but I seem to recall a non-commercially stocked jukebox that illustrated the incredibly good taste of whomever loaded up the music. Sadly, I live in Jersey where nothing like this exists. Pub mediocrity thrives over here. It''s always worth the trip to SPTR. Top quality and no pretensions at this neighborhood (and city) gem.

Came here on a rainy Saturday, took in some beers and a hockey game and some grub. Food was good enough. Interesting fair, but like so many 'gastropubs' I almost felt like it was interesting for the sake of interesting, but not for taste. I honestly can't put my finger on it, but nothing blew my socks off. Good beer list for sure, but in this city, that is becoming less of a selling point. Everyone has a good beer list. Atmosphere was lacking. Nothing special. It's a bar in a somewhat nothing neighborhood. Service was just fine. Nothing to razzle dazzle you, nothing to disappoint. I'll go back, I'm just not running.

I've been putting off writing my review of SPTR for a while now. I wanted to approach it with the proper attention it deserved. I love this place. Maybe it's the food, the lighting, the staff, the look of the place....or maybe it's the beer? Maybe all of the above. The beer menu is always up to par with any of the best in town. They had a bluefish special for dinner once. It was the kind of dish that whisked my mind away temporarily. Was I really sitting at a bar in South Philly? Wow. Also, as far as food is concerned....three all-important words: WILD BOAR TACOS. I could be having a discussion be it face-to-face, via email or text about politics, relationships, work or sub-atomic particles when myself or one of the other participants interjects with: "...wild boar tacos?" Focus shifts, priorities realign, agendas are altered. These things have become the stuff of legend between myself and those closest to me. The mere mention of them can be a conversation stopper. SPTR does something unique, I feel, in that it incorporates many of the great aspects of quality gastropubs around the city into one place. - Avant-garde menu - Excellent selection of craft beers. - Great staff. - Coziness factor. - Attracting a chill crowd which fosters a laid-back vibe. SPTR has a warmth and charm that few other places match. (No place's name looks cooler abbreviated either.)

I love SPTR! Their beer selection is excellent and their food is great. The only complaint that I have is that their menu isn't a little larger or that they don't change it a little more often. I've lived around the corner for the past year and a half and half come here on a number of occasions. The food that I have had has been delicious (cheeseburger is THE BOMB) I only wish that there was a little bit more variety now and then. SPTR please switch up your menu, your subjects are looking for a little change!

The grilled cheese, meatball sandwich, burger, and vegan hoagie have all been tried and all get rave reviews from this Yelper. By far my favorite is the meatball sandwich, but be prepared to not feel hungry for approximately 20-24 hours. Second on the list would be the burger, but mostly because of all the pickled accompaniments that come with it (pickles, peppers, green tomatoes..all available for your salty enjoyment). I've also sampled both the steak fries and the salad as sides, and this salad is one the best side salads out there if you love olives and onions. This place is great for a lazy Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

This must have been an off day. It had to be. Came in this morning for brunch with some friends. The seating situation is a little hairy. Do you seat yourself? I have no idea, but we did. Everything was just. so. slow. today. It took way longer than it should have to get water, to talk to our server, to get our food. When the food did come out, some was undercooked, some was cold. We were all too starving to say anything about it because it took somewhere around 40ish minutes to get our food, so we didn't even want to risk sending it back. The server was nice enough, but really inattentive. She came by about 25 minutes after taking our orders to tell us our food would be out shortly. This was not true. Eh. Oh, one star is for the fact that they were playing the Smiths.

I had a nice little run with my silly rhyming review below, but it was accurate about two chefs ago (the one before the lion scandal chef) and now the time has come for updating. The first time I went into the South Philly Tap Room it was with my mom, an ER nurse at St. Agnes at the time. Her boozy nurse, cop and fire-fighter comrades would gather at the new SPTR to celebrate the end of another shift saving lives. We ate crab and artichoke dip, among other, not-at-all-memorable items, and I favorably reviewed the meal and upstart beer selection for my Temple News column. In the intervening years, SPTR has gone from a beer oasis to one of the most consistently tasty and different gastropubs in town. The fried chicken that is being served right this minute --an orgy of wing, thigh, breast and drummie-- is one of the best I've had north of the Mason-Dixon. "Mexican construction worker" headcheese tacos for $1 was our go-to cheap appetizer of summer 2009. Aggressively gilded with jalapenos and superhot salsas, the tiny, rich tacos were weird, provocative and quite simply delicious. Even the fries, which are more like a British chip-style, are extraordinarily enjoyable. The beer selection is still outstanding, and the service, while not perfecto, has certainly improved. Many of the staff are extremely competent in addition to being friendly and unpretentious. I'd recommend SPTR to anyone looking for a memorable, upmarket pub dinner. Ask the servers and bartenders for beer recommendations -- they know their stuff more often than not.

Our friends that live in the area told us about this place. I really love the vibe in there, it's very chill. Their brunch is just plain wonderful. I got an omelet and was extremely pleased with. I was happily about to dig into my omelet when all of a sudden, I saw it. Almost trying to hide in a little silver condiment dish. I dipped my fork into the reddish mixture and to my delight, it was homemade ketchup. Did you hear what I just typed? HOME MADE KETCHUP. Then the omelet became something very special my friends! It's just one of those crazy little things that make this place so awesome. The servers rock, the food rocks and the craft beers rock (or so I'm told since I don't drink). I'm so glad that my friends are booze hounds because they show me these little gastric gems that they find. And I reap the benefits.

Make sure you ask for ranch dressing they love to tell you that they don't serve it the juke box is great the chef is top notch (I even follow the dude on twitter) The babes are hot and the sports talk is not constant Thank God because I hate Philadelphia sports almost as much as New England sports. The menu changes often Dont be an asshole and you will did just find Ask the bartender Adam what he thinks about Neil Young and you will find yourself having a fantastic 4 hour conversation

It is almost embarrassing how much I love the South Philly Taproom. I'm not sure I'm old enough yet to reach such Cheers levels of comfort with and reliance on a neighborhood bar (as in, I think we might have a table). WHATEVER THOUGH. Screw convention. I have found my niche there and I'm happy to stay in it. Why, you ask? The beer list is ALWAYS solid (sometimes even "super") and chef Scott does not mess around with the dinner specials. I don't even order off of the normal menu anymore (boar tacos and the occasional tomato soup being the exceptions). In the sea of things I have tried for the first time at SPTR: bluefish, duck hearts, soft-shell crabs, blood clams, beef hearts...more. All delicious. Really delicious. Honest and f-king flavorful. Note: I'm lying about the blood clams being delicious, but whatever, it was cool to eat something called a blood clam. He does a wicked ceviche and a stellar trout - and you cannot go wrong with the burger or the amazing spicy pickled green tomatoes that go along with it. I'm a horrifically high-maintenance bitch of a patron, but SPTR has sat quiet, patient and unmoving through all of my requisite pissing and moaning, refusing to yield and confident in its dismissal of my stupidity. Thank god for that, because now that I've calmed, I've realized that I've found my Cheers match. Whether it's just me and my man or a whole shit ton of us, there's no where else I'd rather dump a paycheck.

One of the best happy hours in the city. Half off local draughts and apps which makes those amazing wild boar tacos only $5 instead of $10, so yea I got 2 orders. The sliders were equally amazing, best I've had in a while. Also tried Great Lakes Nosferatu and loved it, a great beer for the season, so get one before they disappear. Our server was good but a little smile and person-ability would've been nice. Why do hipsters think smiling will make them less hip? He would have gotten a much bigger tip if he'd shown some interest in being there.

The food first. Vegan pizza is a bit oily, but almost tart with salt and so very delicious. Hot dogs are filling when you're hungry! Great beer selection and a sweet happy hour. Portions here are huge (except for the hot dogs, aw well), so you won't leave hungry. It's a bit pricey for the quality of food, but people here are friendly and service is great. Don't know if I'll stop by again in the near future since it's a couple miles from me, but I'd definitely suggest it as a go-to place to hang out if I'm in the neighborhood.

This place has gone to a corner bar that kept us alive on $5 quesadillas (6-7 years ago) to a bustling neighborhood staple that's ALWAYS open. It's amazing to have vegan/vegetarian options and a crazy drink list within close walking distance. So happy these guys are here!

I found heaven.. & it's in South Philly on Mifflin St. Garlic bread grilled cheese sandwich, fried chicken with mac & cheese, & jalapeno corn bread, & wait for it.......... Deep fried PB&J sandwich. It was love at first bite. I've never had a deep fried PB&J, but after I had one, I'm determined to have one at least once a week. (Hopefully I don't end up having a heart attack mid PB&J bite.) They also have my favorite beer ever, Lindeman's Framboise Lambic, which makes this place a win for me in my book.

This place is epicly sweet! Friendly servers, bar tenders who actually know about the crazy indie beer selection they are selling and food that actually defines this place as a gastro pub and not a want to be gastro pub like Cav's somethinghouse. Thanks to the Yelp reviews and a friends recommendations I had the southern fried buffalo wings with collared greens and both were exceptional. Also they have homemade ketchup wich the waiter was kind enough to give me a side to take home since I liked it so much. If I lived around the area I would make this my regular watering hole. Anyways, I tend to ramble so here's my summary: GREAT Food GREAT Staff GREAT Beers Do you need anything else?

I did the PBC Fried Chicken Run last Saturday, and want to thank SPTR for putting up with me and a bunch of other sweaty, loud, smelly runners and providing excellent food and service. Many of the folks who participated in the run hadn't been to the SPTR before and everybody seemed to love it. Since I obviously don't eat fried chicken, I arranged to have the vegetarian option. I assumed it would be either the tempeh hoagie or the grilled cheese, but was pleasantly surprised to be given an AMAZING veggie burger. Seitan and some kind of batter, made into a patty, served on a brioche bun with their super spicy pickles and all the fixins. I am crossing my fingers that this burger gets added to the menu- it was without a doubt one of the best veggie burgers I've ever had. Pretty pretty please???

This is a great little bar deep in South Philly. My friend and I spent several hours at one of the sidewalk tables. It is in a lively, busy neighborhood, and there was a steady flow of people going in and out of the bar throughout the evening, but it was never crowded. It looked like a lot of them were local, as many of them arrived walking. Excellent beer list. The Apex is delicious. And the Kenzinger is only $3.00, as a Kenzinger should be. I had the wild boar tacos, which were just delicious. My friend, who has celiacs, was easily accommodated (and goes there often herself; they can always accommodate for her), and enjoyed her meal as well. Very nice atmosphere, not a kid bar, most of the people looked to be around 30. I prefer dive bars myself, and this was a nice alternative, non-pretentious, but not a dive; not too loud, but not boring. Great place!

HEAVEN IN SOUTH PHILADELPHIA. This was my favorite place about living in this neighborhood and I miss it more than anything (even greasy hungover breakfasts at the Melrose) If you like food or (good) beer you should go there. If you like both you should drop everything and go there right now! They make their own ketchup - you'll want a doggie bag just for this.

This place was busy, mid-day on a Saturday. Service is very friendly. Mac and cheese is excellent, spinach as well. The beer soup was very good, but there were too many hunks of onions. A recent google search found that the following people liked eating chunks of onions: Ted Bundy, Pee Wee Gaskins, and Joseph Goebbels - definitely not the type of crowd one should encourage to patronize one's joint. Cut those fuggers up! The burger is excellent, but the fries are sub-par (please invest in some skinnier, raw-cut gastro-pub fries), and the pasta salad is lame, so next time I will go with a salad on the side. Excellent beer selection!

A gem hidden in South Philly. We found this place via Yelp during the Mummers Parade. We stopped in thirsty and hungry and left very happy. Good service, great beer selection, even better food. They put care into their menu and use local and home made instead of prepared whenever possible. We had the burgers which were special. Home made ketchup, excellent buns...you get the picture? The chef here really thinks about how to do the best within the constraints of the neighborhood and pricing. We would go back in a heart beat if we were local. Definitely a keeper.

Looking at the menu online, I was excited to go to the Taproom and grab some food and drinks. After and unsuccessful attempt at left side of the street parallel parking, I drove around the block and found a spot just down the street. They had some outdoor seating which was all filled, so we decided to see if there were available tables inside. The interior is more of a restaurant and larger than I thought it would be. There is a long bar area with some tables when you first walk in, then it opens up to about 10 tables with seating for about 40 or so people. Walking in, we were seated immediately at a table and ordered some drafts. They have a decent draft selecting (Kenzinger being their "normal" draft), they also have a huge bottle list. After browsing the menu we decided to order a few things and share between the two of us. We ordered the following: From the specials menu: Oysters - Not very good, they were covered in sauce, and there was hardly and oyster there. Head cheese tacos - First time I have had head cheese, its different, so i can't really judge these. Branzino - This is what the waitress suggested to order (maybe because it was the most expensive thing on either menu). When we ordered it the waitress explained that it was a whole fish, and she could have it fillet it if we would like, but having too much pride we of course said no. When she brought the fish out, I told my girlfriend I have never had a whole fish, and she said she never has either, so we picked it apart the best we knew how. We made a massacre of the poor thing. It was very good, but would have been more enjoyable it we knew how to eat it. From the regular menu: Wild boar tacos - This is the item that everyone mentioned in their yelp reviews. I didn't care for them, they were greasy (not what i expect from wild game) and there wasn't much added texture to them. It was basically a greasy lump of pork on a taco. Grilled zucchini - It was awesome, salt, pepper and oil, grilled to a slight char. Cooked just the way I do at home. I liked the Taproom, but will order differently next time I am there. I like dour food, but other people's orders looked so much better. TIP OF THE DAY: If you order a whole fish, there is work involved (bones, skin, etc.), make sure you or someone you are with knows how to go about eating said whole fish. From the regular menu:

A friend from out of town was visiting, who has seemed to learn more about Philadelphia than I have. So, I wanted to take him somewhere new, somewhere he'd never been, and did not know about. I decided we'd try the brunch at SPTR. I've been to SPTR before . . . but not for brunch. Brunch is my entire motivation for reviewing (they have great beer, but everyone knows that, no need to tell you here). We started with the boar tacos and the brisket tostada. I'd read a lot about the boar tacos before we tried them. They were very good and even sparked a lively brunch debate about the size of a boar. I preferred the brisket tostada . . . but out of town friend loved loved loved the boar tacos. For our entrees, I can't even remember what out of town friend ordered because I had the enfrijoladas. Holy enfrijoladas!!! It was quite possibly the best brunch food I've had in Philadelphia. I could eat that dish every day of the week. Out of town friend actually had the scrapple sandwich . . . I couldn't pay attention though because my food was too good. Will I be back? Of course. And, of note, they have several vegetarian options . . . which has proved to be a challenge in Phily, finding a veggie friendly restaurant that carnivores love too!

I really like the taproom. Hell, I almost have to being that its less than a block from my front door. They have a constantly rotating selection of very decent beers. The burgers are delicious and the mac and cheese is to die for. I'm not a huge fan of steak fries but when coupled with their specialty ketchup I have no qualms finishing the whole plate. My main complaint, however, is the inexplainable inconsistant serving sizes/prices of their beer menu. Should a Fluer de Lehigh ever be served in a 12oz glass instead of a regular pint glass? No. No it shouldn't. And don't even try to tell me its because the beer has a high alcohol content. I can see right there on the menu in front of me that it weighs in at whopping 4.5%. Sometimes you just want to drink a big beer, and they tend to be hard to come by here.

Hands down, one of my favorite little restaurants in Philly. I've yet to have a bad meal there, however I went Friday (6/25/10) and had the best experience ever, prompting me to write this review. I went there with my boyfriend and we got the hummus and flat-bread appetizer and some ciders. The hummus was prepared chunky, which was really good, the flat-bread was fresh, fluffy and warm and it came with a side of roasted (grilled??) asparagus that I could have eaten a whole plate of and olives, which I didn't eat, but I just don't like olives. My boyfriend ordered the roast pork sandwich and I went with my favorite, the wild boar tacos (sans onions...yuck). The boar tacos were, as usual, amazing. The boar is the perfect mix of crispy and juicy and the spice in it is perfect. Not nose running-ly hot, but but it creeps up on you and stays after you're done eating. The guacamole is fresh made and with a perfect texture and the sprinkling of cheese is light and the perfect ending texture. The pork sandwich had me stealing bites of it the whole meal. The pork was SO tender and flavorful and the sandwich was on GARLIC bread! Why have I never thought of that? It was amazing. The fries were perfect and I love that they make their own ketchup. So the food is always good there, so what made this trip so awesome? The service. Our waitress (I really wish I knew her name) was wonderful. It was fairly busy there (The Phillies were playing and winning) but she was always outside asking us if we needed anything at the right time. Not overbearing, but attentive. She helped me pick out a beer and then made suggestions (even brought out a bottle from their cooler to show me what I was looking for) for the specialty beer store across the street. The only thing I could complain about it is the service is kind of hit or miss. Our waitress was fantastic this time, but the last time I was there, the waitress seemed a little annoyed that she had to wait on me. The time before that our waiter was amazing. So it's a gamble, but the food always makes it all worth it.

So to start off, I will say for some reason Yelp uploaded the bf's pic and not mine. Anywhoo, Im a woman, he's a man, the pictures are misleading, lol, doesnt matter, just clarifying. This was not my first experience at the Taproom. My boyfriend lives two blocks away so we occasionally go for happy hour, but not that much because many happy hours in the hood are much cheaper and have a better selection. On this occasion, we went for dinner because we had a Restaurant.com coupon and thought we would be able to splurge a little. We ordered our meal, fried chicken, some pork and potato appetizer (can't remember the name, it was spanish), and a side of mac and cheese. I mentioned to the bf that he should tell the server that we had a coupon, good thing because when I did she said they did not accept that coupon any longer and were in dispute with Restaurant.com over the whole issue. Thinking that our lovely experience was slowly going downhill, I was worried. My bf was pissed off and stewing in his chair so I knew that he was about to blow at the fact that we purchased the coupon, but were now being told we could not use it. About 5 minutes later, the manager came right over and said she would comp us $25 off the bill. What a pleasant surprise to be compensated without any prodding from us. The problem was corrected immediately in a courteous manner and we were able to continue eating our delicious meal and drinking our tasty beverages. A minor glitch that could have turned us away completely has actually made me have a greater respect for this establishment and the professionalism under which they operate. Kudos to you SPTR!! SPTR is a great neighborhood that is worth travelling to. The bar has a great selection of beers that will serve any beer drinker's palate. Additionally, going there to watch sporting events is a ton of fun. The food is delicious (especially the grilled cheese / tomato soup combo), and makes you feel warm and yummy. There is really nothing that can go wrong with your experience here!

Why? Why? Why? Saturday evening I went to the SPTR with the BF and this time our waitress was excellent and attentive but guess what? NO FRIED PICKLES! Come on you guys.... Seriously? Everyone loves them! A table along side of us couldn't believe they were no longer on the menu either. Listen, You are doing a lot of things right at SPTR, but the fried pickles need to come back! But as Always the pickled veggies were delicious too, keeping my disappointment at bay, at least during dinner.

Dear Mac & Cheese, I love you. Seriously though, the first words out of my mouth after trying my first bite of their Mac & Cheese was, "Wow." Just that one bite had SO much flavor. Classic elbow pasta, smothered in white cheddar cheese. Mixed with onions and scallions (giving the dish awesome color and texture). As for garnish on-top, there were little fried onions that were SO good. Tips: let the mac & cheese sit for a little when it arrives at your table, let the sauce get nice and thick. ALSO, beware of ordering this on a date... when I say, "flavor," I mean, "FLAVOR." -Try the Dogfish Head Olde School (Brandywine beer): Normally I stay away from "darker" beers. But this one was just really fruity and light. -Also I definitely recommend the boar's meat taco's and philly steak sliders too. Mmmm, good eats!

Until two weeks ago, I had all but given up hope of ever eating brunch anywhere south of south street ever again (or at least until my kid turns, like, twelve years old or something). Anybody who has ever waited in line for forty-five minutes for a mediocre meal at Morning Glory knows what I'm talking about. That wait is annoying enough when it's just you and your spouse/significant other/group of girlfriends...add a toddler to the mix and it's a recipe for disaster. But I was meeting up with an old friend, and when her friend suggested SPTR as a destination, I shrugged off my concerns and decided to give it a shot. So glad I did! The food was quite good, with abundant vegetarian options, and the wait time? Nonexistent! I also liked the clubby, old-school decor. I liked it so much that I was even willing to overlook the lack of changing tables in the restrooms.* If I am ever able to make it happy hour on a regular basis again, I plan to check out their specials, which sound like a great deal. *Kidding, I am so kidding. Although given modern parenting trends, I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't quite a few Philly bars with changing tables and kiddie menus.

SPTR, how I love you...and let me count the ways. From a stellar beer selection, to a menu that goes above and beyond the normal gastropub fare, and the rustic living room atmosphere....you are perfect. Came here last Friday for dinner and left perhaps far too stuffed. We started the night with a couple half-price local beers (me: a Sly Fox Chester County Bitter on cask; him: a Sly Fox Imperial IPA) at Happy Hour, half-price rib-eye cheesesteak sliders, and a couple oysters. All of which were, without a doubt amazing. The little Shemogue oysters were on special for the night - and served up Asian style, which were out of this world. The meat in the sliders was tender and delicious. Next course, I got the Eggplant Parmesan on special, which was huuuuuge; and a Sly Fox Imperial IPA. The eggplant were fried perfectly and layered with a spicy marinara sauce and fresh mozzarella. My boyfriend got the grass-fed burger - which he didn't like as much as he thought he would, but then we realized that maybe we are spoiled by the amazing burgers over at the Royal Tavern. He still enjoyed it - and those yummy steak fries they serve with their homemade ketchup. Last course - yes, we went for the dessert - was their "pot brownie" - a decadent brownie served in a mini cast iron skillet topped off with vanilla ice cream. It was nothing short of amazing. Our nightcaps were a Lagunitas Cappucino Stout and a Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout. Great service, amazing beer, and incredible food. ';Nuff said.

I've lived in the neighborhood for over a year now, so I've had the chance to try a lot of bars on and around East Passyunk multiple times. Of the several bars I frequent, SPTR is my least favorite. When I can go to Devil's Den, the POPE, Watkins, or Royal Tavern, I see no reason to go to the Tap Room. The food is truly mediocre and often a dollar or two more expensive than other area bars. The burger ($12), for example, is bland and the toppings are often disproportionately large compared to the burger itself. They also refuse to cook the burger in any mid-range temp - no medium-rare, for example, which, for me, is the only way to eat a burger. I've never been to a place that will only do rare, medium, or well, and it's a really weird move on their part. The veggie sandwich was just a bunch of cold, mushy roasted vegetables on a very tough roll - not easy to eat or tasty. The vegan hoagie is a pretty lame vegan option as well, especially considering the vegan variety at some other local places. Fries are pretty good, and the doughnuts are tasty but definitely not worth $6. SPTR also has one of the worst happy hours in the area. While Devils Den, the POPE, Hawthorne's, and Watkins have half-off all of their drafts (including flights at Devils Den), SPTR only has half-off local drafts, which usually means only a couple of them are discounted. It doesn't help that the draft list here is small and often full of very average options - I've almost never been really excited to try more than one offering on the list, and I generally have to settle for something I'm not all that eager to try when I come here. Service is fair to poor. Servers can be friendly, but are more often either flustered or cold. Atmosphere is fine - it's an ok place to hang out for a couple hours - but nothing special. With so many other options within just a handful of blocks, I don't see the point in coming to SPTR anymore. Other places have better beer, better food, and better prices.

Really wish it could be 5 stars... truly I do. Beer selection and menu are great, well-rotated, and well-complemented, and the atmosphere is really nice. The burgers are excellent. Only problem is the very spotty service. Sometimes "on", but often "off". A little grouchiness, a little inattentive, a little slow. If they ever care enough to fix this this review will certainly go to 5 stars, but honestly at this point I had to push myself to NOT make it 3 this time around.

This is a (mostly) brunch review.... Came in to grab a nice quiet brunch with my fiance. Unfortunately for us, SPTR had the same thing in mind, since it seemed like our server didn't want any part of talking to us. Our morning started of by walking in to the stone silence of the staff, no greeting. We sat down and asked for coffee. Repeat, WE asked for coffee, it was not offered. When it did arrive, It was cold. No water was ever offered. There were dirty dishes sitting out and it smelled awful in there. As if I had a party at my house and had neglected to clean up. Stale beer. Yuck. The food was aight. The grilled cheese was standard fare. Tomato lager soup hit a little too close to home much considering the wicked scents already wafting around. As for the side of mac n cheese, well that was cold. I would have sent it back, but our server never spoke to us again to see if we needed refills, check on the food or anything else. We've also been to the Tap Room a number of times during different parts of the day. Our other experiences haven't been as bad as this, though none were ever particularly good either. The servers, again, have always had a snide attitude. Once a beer snob server didn't want to serve me a Sea Dog that I ordered. I understand that gastropubs aren't exactly renowned for their service, nor should they be expected to, but must I feel like they are doing me a favor by taking my order? Whatever. I tried to like the Tap Room, really, I did. I gave it 5 or 6 chances in the last few years, with experiences ranging from minimally acceptable to downright awful. It just hasn't worked out. Basically, I'll never step foot in here again.

I'm constantly re-shuffling my "best burger of Philadelphia" list but South Philadelphia Taproom remains one of the best. A friend urged me to give SPTR a shot after learning of my winter quest for great burgers. I had been starved for one after living in the Caribbean for a year and a half where even mediocre burgers are nearly impossible to obtain. Well cooked, well seasoned, and well balanced. No major frills or surprises were required to get their burger to linger in my memory. The accompanying appetizers and sides are just as delicious. Oh, yeah, and they've got a lot of beer. A great, warm atmosphere as well.

I'm not familiar enough with this area of the city to compare it to other local pubs but this place rocks my socks enough to venture back regardless. In all honesty, I hadn't the time to do a thorough scouring of all the offerings (ie beer menu) but I was super pleased with the food menu and draft beer selection. To the right of the bar is a standing bottle fridge with a wide variety of bottled beer selection. Candy for the eyes of any beer lover! The menu was great. I wanted to try everything. Gastropub comfort eats are what you're going to SPTR for. Wings, Mac & Cheese, Cheesesteak Sliders, Open Faced Roast Chicken Sandwich (what I had), Salads, Fried PB&J! I'm really anxious to go back again and spend some time here. Our meals and drinks were delivered quickly and the courteous wait staff was quick to offer refills and remove our cleared plates. My only negative criticism would be the food prices. I'd be happier if they were able to chop off a buck or two on some of the menu items. The apps were priced at entree prices shunning my desire for an app and an entree. If I lived anywhere near SPTR, this would be my neighborhood spot where you'd find me 2-3 times a week at least.

Two word: Ostrich Kebabs. I've only been there a few times but every thing was great each time. The food, the beer selection and the waitstaff. If I lived a bit closer I'd definitely be there a lot more often.

There's not much to NOT like about this place. Get yourself a coupon from Restaurant.com and check it out. Great beer selection and menu w/ daily specials. I can say that I do not dig the homemade ketchup. I've had pork belly, alligator and some other unconventional dishes here, all were bangin. Give it a shot.

Expansive bottled beer list. Eclectic food offerings on the menu, ranging from wild boar tacos to fried PB&J. Went out with a group of friends on a Saturday night. Enjoyed a nice Ommegang (draft) and the wild boar tacos. Not that it was overly crowded, but you would swear the servers doubled up as bartenders and/or cooks because it wasn't often that we saw our server. Might have enjoyed a few pints of beer had she been more attentive.

Stopped in on a Thursday evening and the place was full, which is usually a good sign. Got a table quickly and had great service from Laura Lee, Millie and the other bartender with the amazing beard. The food was great i recommend the open face chicken sandwich unless ou are afraid of awesome. The beer list was an excellent mix of varieties and brewers. I had the Lagunitas Double IPA, then a Troegs Hopback Amber on the cask, if they have it go for it the Hopback was singing on the cask!! Highly recommended if you are in the neighborhood or even not in the neighborhood get over there, thank you Philly for having so many great beer spots!

I decided that I would finally try tempeh, which has been on my to-do list even though I am not a vegetarian. The vegan hoagie was a great way to do this. The hoagie was delicious and extremely difficult to eat because it had so much stuff in it. Perhaps fewer onions and less lettuce? Whatever, it was still really tasty. The beer list is great too! All of the staples are there and more. Also, I have been to the Wheaties festival a few times and that has always been enjoyable. As Philly gastropubs go, SPTR is pretty much as good as it gets!

Yesterday I sat outside at the Tap Room and felt like I was in a Harmony Korine film. A terrifying family of fat children sat next to us with a woman whose skin appeared to be falling off. The woman, who was wearing a clear plastic bra under her sun dress, kept waxing nostalgic about the plantain nachos the Tap Room used to serve. "They were so different, but they took them off the menu and I'll never know why." All the while, what seemed like the entire management team was outside trying to decide where the new bike racks would go. Said racks looked like they were made by Catherine O'Hara in Beetlejuice. There was also a mini traffic jam which caused an old asian man wearing blue matching clogs and knee wraps to jump out of his van to scream and yell. Amidst this surreal south philly scene, I sat in a drunken daze and thoroughly enjoyed the perfectly salted and crunchy southern fried chicken wings with collards and a classic chopped salad. I washed it down with a Founders Pale Ale and Lancaster Cream Ale. Delicious.

I RECOMMEND: Burger = amazing. No seriously, amazing. Beer selection = solid Salads = unique and well executed STAY AWAY FROM: Guacamole Appetizer = is a plate of onions coated in guac. Not what I was expecting nor what you should expect when you order "Guacamole Appetizer." Service = Minor air of "Waitress toughened by life" so you may get a little attitude but service is always expedient.

If the SPTR wasn't so conveniently located just three blocks away, I really wouldn't make much of an effort to come here. I think I like the owner and what he's done for Newbold more than the Taproom itself. Its been in a while since I've sat outside, but when I used to go with my dog the service was painfully slow. My first round would be empty for a long, long time before I'd get my second and by then my buzz was gone. But they sure loved my dog. Also, if you hate scallions, beware. They put them in EVERYTHING. I'm not kidding. Fucking everything. Even to garnish the mac and cheese. I recently ordered the grilled cheese that came with tomato soup and choice of salad, fries, or I think pasta salad and asked for no scallions. Thankfully there were none in my soup, but lo and behold, there was a lovely pile in my salad. The grilled cheese is actually pretty good (next to the P.O.P.E.) but the tomato soup had more diced onions than it did tomatoes. Aaahh, I want to like this place so bad. I really do. Their beer is good at least. There's usually really good local, craft, and Belgian beers on draught that changes quite often so you can always try something new. I think they also have 100 bottled beers if you nothing on tap tickles your fancy (which might be hard because I think the have 14 taps?) They have beer to-go which is my favorite and I would go there all the time for that, but now that Ultimo has been live and kickin for some while now, I think that's my new favorite place. Again, another great addition to the neighborhood by the owner of the SPTR. I can't wait to see what he does with the Wander Inn.

I went to meet some friends on a Friday night. It was surprisingly empty (might just have been an off time) Decor is five stars, bottle list is 4 stars (although, they were out of the saison du pont. bummer) but for a place called "tap room" I felt their draft list was lacking terribly. Very typical beers (alot of Bells?) and no real rarities. All in all I got a nice vibe in there, but I don't think I would go out of my way to go back

So to be clear, I rate based on how good a place is for what they have to offer... and SPTR is a 5 Star neighborhood gem. Beyond having a comfortable and still spacious environment to get together with your friends, they offer consistently pleasing selections in both beer and food always incorporating the seasonal cravings. I've been coming to this spot loyally for quite a while. The staff knows their beer. They are always helpful when you have questions about their selection- and maybe it's partially due to the fact that my friends and I are good for many things, but above all we are good for drinking and eating- we are not part of the crowd that likes to sit and chat over pints of Schuylkill punch for 3 hours on a Friday night. I have also been to private events here and it's always a good time. There is a vibe of family within this establishment that makes it a comfortable place to relax and hang out, or come to for brunch on a weekend. I have brought visitors from outside the city here before, and turned many friends on to making this part of their neighborhood rotation and SPTR never disappoints. I love all the food here for sure(they also offer lots of veg/vegan friendly options if that's your deal). I don't know how he does it, but the chef executes one of my favorite mac and cheese sides, ever. It's straight to the point creamy deliciousness. While others are beer snobs, I am a mac and cheese snob. So, well done...and YUM. To make it all even better- the prices are so fair for what you get.

The South Philadelphia Taproom is a great place to eat, drink and relax. I always forget about it, but on Sunday, my roommate reminded me, and we met up for drinks and dinner. The atmosphere is very cozy. We sat a table with seats made from barrels. I could have sat there for hours had I been in a drinking mood. I had a Kenzinger and the tomato lager soup. Delicious! The soup was served with mini grilled cheeses in it. It was hearty enough to make me feel full too. The only downside was the service. Our server was a little bit weird and spacey. We waited about 20 minutes for the check, and only got it because I asked someone else who was clearing our empty glasses. We missed the beginning of Curb Your Enthusiasm as a result! Blasphemy!

Food = 4.5 Stars Beer Menu = 4.5 Stars Atmosphere = 4 Stars Brunch = 5 Bajillion Stars There's little I can complain about from South Philly Taproom. Foods good, beers good, atmosphere and service are (you guessed it) good. I want to discuss something very dear to my heart. It's called... the "Black and Brown". This is a drink I first had at the SP Taproom, and I constantly crave it on the reg. It's 1/2 Porter, 1/2 Root Beer and 1/2 Amazing. It's my favorite brunch drink and is the perfect compliment to the............... BREAKFAST BURGER. Seriously folks, the breakfast burger is ridiculous. It's a burger (just needed to establish that) with bacon, and a fried egg. Now I know this might have been done before... but SP Taproom just does it so damn good. I've also had the Cheesesteak Omelet, also very very good. The brunch at SP Taproom is just greatness.

Their food is so good. I love their new, or rather not sooo new, buffalo wings. AND their burger...well, it is amazing. It's like the best hot dog you could ever hope for in a burger's body...you'll understand after you eat it.

I don't really hang out in South Philly often but I'd say I've been to a decent amount of the bars down there. Somehow I just never got around to SPTR. This all changed on on Monday night and I don't think I'll ever be the same. The space is comfortable. I didn't expect it to be so big! Definitely liked being there. The Beer list was pretty good. My mind wasn't blown but I had a couple drafts which were delish. The food was craaaazy good!! I was all "Oh, I'll try this grilled cheese, no big deal"...brain explosion! It came with tomato soup and a side of macaroni & cheese for $1 extra. All three elements together made for a trifecta of perfection. Euphoria washed over me with every bite. Yum.

Stumbled upon this place when a friend moved into neighborhood, we were going to eat as well so I looked up the menu... poblano mole wings! Got to try them! Being a wing connoisseur I was excited about this. They were very god and lived up to expectation! Now I say "were" because they removed them from the menu. I went there specifically for the wings! Not a beer drinker and not "hip" on vegetarian food not much else grabbed me, but the poblano mole wings were great! Last night went there with a large group (me just for the wings and wine of course) and they were gone. Replaced by a dry naked fried wing served sparingly with some fried jalapeno and onions. No flavor, no taste and very dry! I told the waitress if I didn't like them I wasn't coming back and that may be true because they were terrible! I gave a few a try with no sauce then needed some hot sauce or something... they gave me their homemade hot sauce which wasn't bad (kind of salsa verde not really hot sauce) but was a saver to the dry crippled wings (they NEED a sauce). Wish they would bring back the mole wings, just saying! Until then probably won't suggest SPTR again! Otherwise atmosphere is good... but why change a good thing!

I love SPTR, especially their brunch. It never disappoints, until this past Sunday. This is not a complaint per say but as I stated above, a disappointment. I went with friends and as always ordered the JORJITO'S ENFRIJOLADAS.-my standard fare- only to find out the menu had been changed. I was broken hearted- I still am. It was the perfect brunch item and I crave it often. While what I ordered was superb as was my bloody mary, I know going back there won't be the same. Please bring it back, I beg you. If you have yet to brunch there, go. it's stellar and since you havent had the JORJITO'S ENFRIJOLADAS you will not be disappointed.

I have been coming to this bar for years. Every time I come here I get a smile, good beer and great food. The service is always awesome and the staff are great at making me feel welcome. Quality beers for under $6? I can sit at a table during dinner service even if I just want to drink? The bartender is (*gasp*)....smiling?! I'm clearly not in a NY beer bar anymore. This happenin corner joint encompasses what I seek in a place to get my Friday drink on....It was packed but with a subdued crowd that were preoccupied with personal conversation as opposed to the loud and rowdy exclamations of drunkenness I have come to expect on the weekends. The staff was busy but not in a way that made you feel like conversation was out of the question, and the jukebox was fantastic---and it didn't light up, download from the internet, or cost an obscene amount to indulge in...YIPPEE! I enjoyed it so much we returned the next day for brunch, which was not as thrilling of an experience (the server was clearly either drunk or hungover to an extreme that impaired his functioning) and pretty much made every mistake possible. I won't hold it against you, SPTR...this time. On a side note I left my wallet on the table and it was returned to me, with everything inside....including cash. Yea, I'm not in NY anymore.

Just far enough from the center that you probably won't run into anyone you know. Kenzinger is 3 bux. Plus a wide, revolving selection of other beers on tap. The men's room is painted in blackboard, and chalk is provided. The women's, unfortunately, offers nothing. The food is excellent. The tomato lager soup come with mini grilled cheeses sitting in the bowl. The wild boar tacos are gourmet and may be the best i've ever had, even better than late night san francisco mission super tacos for 2 and half dollars. The fries are amazing, too, and the ketchup must be homemade. It's nice and dark and not too crowded during the week. It's clean and well kept and not quite a dive. It's a new favorite.

Easily one of my favorite South Philly spots. I live around the corner from here so I find myself here somewhat often. The draft selection is excellent, all micro-brews and they change them about once a week. They have hand-pumped selections as well. The food is incredible, the southern style fried wings are a life-changer and the cheesesteak sliders made me want to hug the chef. The staff is always friendly but not over-the-top. They're very knowledgeable and always are there to serve you for YOUR convenience and not theirs. The only thing keeping this bar from five stars is that the bar is pretty small. I would rather them have a longer bar and fewer tables.

Went this past Saturday before the Philly's game. What they have in beer, they lack in wine. 4 choices by the glass, and only one can you purchase by the bottle. we had two serviers, one was really friendly and the other very unfriendly. Food was so-so. Mac and cheese was good.

I have been living above the SPTR for over a year and a half and have gone in more than a few times. I have noticed that they have changed little things over that time that I like, one example is their housemade ketchup it used to be horrible but their new iteration is actually quite good. The one thing that I am happy with is their burger, just awesome and get it medium rare. They always have good spicy pickled vegetables and hot sauce. I have had some good apps here like the tacos and the tripe tostada when they had it. They always have a good selection of beers and liquors and the staff is definitely friendly. My favorite thing though is the ricotta apple donuts, they are just awesome and I have to get them everytime we visit. This place has become a major destination for people in and out of the neighborhood and that is cool and it's nice to be just a flight of stairs away from it all.

Nice work, SPTR. We came in for lunch on a Saturday. The staff were casual and friendly. The service was prompt and accurate. I had the tomato lager soup, which was very good. It was thick, tomato-ey, and a little tangy. It also had two tiny grilled cheese sandwiches on it! That was a very creative touch! My dining partner had the gazpacho, which I tried and liked as well. It had a smokey taste, but I still think it was veg. I also had the salt and pepper wings, which were a simple winner. It was wings that were seasoned with, well, s and p, and then deep fried. Deliciously simple. The dishes were reasonably priced and had good portions for the price This is a tiny complaint, but it drives me bananas. We sat at a high bar table. It wobbled constantly, along with the table next to ours. It is a simple fix. I wish restaurants would check that stuff daily. Other than that, it was GOOD!

This is hands down my favorite place to eat in Philly. The chef is a straight up freakin genius, fun menu to order from. Cute inside and super friendly staff most of the time. Their mushy pea toast and Mac n cheese will change your life forever!

I probably never would of ended up here if it were for my goal of hitting the top 50 bars of 2012 all in 2013 but I am so glad I did, South Philadelphia Taproom was an awesome bar. The bar tender was very friendly as was the other patrons around me. Loved the high ceiling and large windows in the front area of the bar made the place feel vibrant. They have a decent draft selection to choice from. Its a little far away from me but I'd totally consider coming back.

Sought out this place based on DDD and can only say I think the show went to someone's head. They have a minimalist approach to everything. Small but adequate beer list, so no real complaint here. Now the menu is another story. The menu was missing many things that fellow yelpers raved about. My date and I split the wings as an appetizer and we're left wondering how they found the world's smallest chickens and then coated their wings with the most basic hot sauce available...less than impressed. Let's move to the most bizarre thing I've ever heard in a restaurant; they don't cook burgers medium rare. ..they'll do rare, medium and well done, but not in between. They claimed the thickness of the patty precluded this temperature. When I suggested the obvious of spliting the the time between the rare and medium they looked at me as if I had 2 heads. I can only assume it was just easier for an unskilled cook to prepare food this way. The good to the bizarre is that the rare burger was quite delicious, definitely not too thick to cook to order, but quite tasty. The fries were good as well as the hodgepodge of pickles on the plate. The staff was attentive when it didn't come to burger doneness. Overall it was a strange experience and one I won't need to repeat with all the good choices in Philly.

Just as Yelp suggests...this is truly a "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" review. A few years ago--back when we lived on the "other" side of Broad--the Tap Room used to be our regular spot. In those days the Plantain Nachos were a part of our dietary food pyramid and craft beers made up the rest. At some point or another, management changed (or at least a chef or two) and our favorite meal went by the way side--as did consistency in general. Needless to say, the Tap Room slowly became a place we visited with less and less frequently. Since then, they've renovated from top to bottom--a new dining room, chef, waitstaff, and menu. Fast forward to the the other night when we both came home from work CRAVING a burger. Since we're all about second chances, we made the spontaneous decision to head across the great divide to see what our old favorite had to offer us. Although this is a very well intended 5 Star review, I will offer one suggestion--if groups of 2's, 3's and 4's are filing in and awkwardly looking around it's a pretty good bet that they probably want to be seated (or at least have someone ask). For us it wasn't a "thing" since we waited all of about 6 minutes before we were seated. Some of the other folks around us were a little less easy going about which is why I'm offering the suggestion. :) Upon getting settled at our table for 2, we were immediately greeted by Candice our server. She was polite, SUPER personable, and patient. My biggest pet peeve is impersonal waitstaff that rush you through your night. Candice should teach classes on how it's done. She's 5 Stars all on her own. A table near us ordered Wings and the intoxicating scent of buffalo sauce meant that we absolutely HAD to have them. They were extra crispy and, to my delight, an entire plate full of drums. The only downside is that all of the condiments are homemade which means there wasn't a substitute for the Bleu Cheese (I'm usually a ranch-and-wings kind of gal). The "piece de resistance"? THE BURGERS!! 100% Grass Fed Beef with TWO 1/4" Thick Slabs of Bacon, American Cheese, and "Special Sauce"--a combination definitely worth writing home about. Typically if I see American Cheese on the menu I'm quick to see about substituting it for something less "American". I'm SO glad that I forgot to ask. It was delicious. Another honorable mention goes to the BEST homemade pickles I have ever had--which were part of a spicy pickled vegetable salad that appeared on each of our plates (in addition to a mountain of fries and a pasta salad side dish). These pickles were SO good that I actually pulled Candice aside to ask her to go pat the guy responsible for this salad on the back. Literally. 99% of the time homemade pickles just taste like wet cucumbers. Gross. I would honestly go back to the Tap Room just to eat their pickles. YUM. All in all, we are so glad that the Tap Room has won our hearts back and we can't wait to go back and do it all over again. Also I am secretly crossing my fingers that the plantain nachos make their way back to the menu....Hey! A girl can dream, can't she??

I am super confused now....why, why why do they keep changing perfection! This place has been one of my favorites for years...staples like the Mac one cheese is now some weird tasting truffle thin non-cheesy macaroni. I use to go there once a week at least. But the last few visits I didn't enjoy the New menue. It reminds me of American sardine which I don't enjoy (just the beer I do) I hope they get there traditional staples back, keep them...and maybe add specials. Not change the menue.

This is my favorite spot for dinner in the neighborhood, I go as frequently as I can afford. Food is awesome (I've gotten the brussels sprouts twice and they were even better than I remembered the second time), beer selection is well-rounded, and everything is well-priced. Went tonight, and our waitress (smiley blonde, wish I caught her name to request her next time!) was incredibly sweet and thorough about helping my date figure out the beer he wanted. Great table presence, didn't hover, and walked straight to the kitchen and straight back with an answer to the only question she wasn't sure about (of many questions!) Will be back very soon, I'm sure.

The cheeseburger is excellent!! The bread, thick bacon, thinly sliced lightly pickled onions, and secret sauce go so well together! Best burger I've had in a while! Also they bring it out with some really good fries and homemade ketchup and an assortment of pickled vegetables that are oh so good. Service was excellent as well. Definitely will go back.

The service was slow until the shift change, then things improved considerably. The warm beet salad is lovely. The amish chicken is delicious, although the meals lacks a vegetable. The tuna was over done, and the second try was only slightly better. The donuts for dessert are really nice, especially the dipping sauce. Of course the taps are very good, diverse and well informed staff on a description of the selections. The menu is small, but except for the tuna, it was all done very well.

I can get used to this place. The beer and wine list is pretty great (any place that serves a $3 Kenzinger is a place I will frequent), lots of different drafts to choose from. The food menu is small but it is mighty. My friends both got the lager tomato soup and allowed me to try it...I think I just found my new favorite soup. A light tomato broth with some carrots (and maybe beans or peas?), not a lot though- the carrots do not overpower the soup, and mini grilled cheese sandwiches on top...perfection. I had the wings. i was so confused when they came out because they did not look like wings, but damn...they were good. Served with jalepenos and onions and drizzled with sauce (maybe a blue cheese or ranch), these wings are something to write home about. On my next trip, I am getting the burger. And the soup.

The first time I stopped by here was for a work function. I was not disappointed, I couldn't believe a bar in South Philly looked like this! Happy hour is the best, half priced local drafts and apps. I love the boar tacos, yum yum. I enjoyed sitting on the second floor close to the big open windows. This is one of my drafts location. I love the drafts list is always changing.

Beautiful atmosphere, but not good for a veg friendly dinner. I'd hit this place up for beers - if someone else was suggesting it - but I don't think I'l return on my own. The deal? Well, the service wasn't bad - just inattentive. It wasn't terribly busy, so I don't really know why. Also, the veg options (the vegan hoagie and vegan pizza) are just disguised salads -- the 'pizza' was veggies on essentially pita bread, with lots of oil. That was good, if you're in the mood for that. The hoagie, however, was 50% iceberg lettuce on a ginormous roll. We didn't even touch the thing at the restaurant (it was ginormous! and didn't look very good!) ... still my frugal nature made me take it home. When I ate the leftovers, getting rid of the lettuce and moving the good stuff into part of the sandwich left me with 1/3 (or less). One third. Wow. Just make a smaller sandwich that's better. I had high hopes for this place, so quite bummed by the disappointment.

Above average draft and bottle selection, and a nice decor, though a tad dimly lit as for the food, nothing to brag about. White bean hummus was bland, and the flatbread it came with was completely burnt. Pasta salad comes undressed, which seems like a poor choice. Pork sandwich was dry and gristly. Not bad, but confused by all the rave reviews.

Good food. Great beer. Marvelous pickled things. If only the briny waitresses didn't all cast themselves as the lead in a suburban scenester tragedy. Excellent veneer though. Almost looks like a really decent pub. Gourmet snormet.

After a fab dinner at Circles, our nice waiter guided us to SPTR for a nightcap There was a great beer selection & we got to try some things we normally wouldn't have chosen - fun to experiment! Awesomely nice waitstaff! German birthday buddy tried his first IPA.....a SF IPA.....he wasn't a fan. I'm not an IPA fan either & warned him but I thought it was awesome he at least was adventurous enough to give it a try I tried their Apple Cider & it was okay - tasted kinda vinegary at first but left a somewhat sweet aftertaste. Don't think I'd get it again Next tried a Royal Porter - kinda too hoppy for my taste - I like a smoother finishing beer So although we didn't find our fermented nirvana we had a great time perusing the menu & taking a stab in the dark & that makes for an A-OK joint to me Joy Division playing inside - I knew this place was way cool! Their menu looked extremely Pub-like & promising w/ lots of veggie options & I expect a star upgrade after we get to enjoy their foodie wares!

My favorite bar in South Philly. Their mac & cheese and mole wings are amazing! Also, they always have a fantastic selection of beers on tap. My boyfriend is in love with the meatloaf as well. Can't say enough about this place. Edited down to reflect the menu changes--no spicy vegan hoagie, no mole wings, no more meat loaf. Still the best beers on draft, however.

South Philadelphia Taproom is that really great friend who moved to another part of town that is just barely out of reach for convenience. You keep missing each other when you try to make plans and every time you bump into one another on the street, you vow to hang out(but it just doesn't seem to happen). It's almost a running gag between you two - bump into one another, try to make plans, fail, then run into each other again 8 months later randomly at a show. You know you'd be better friends if you were just...a little...closer, geographically. SPTR has no weaknesses that I can think of. The menu is solid pub fare with a dash of creativity. The beer selection is diverse enough to please most human beings who like beer. Also, this place has SPACE, which is totally awesome. There is ample seating room. This allows you to have pleasant conversation, food, and beer without being packed into embarrassingly close quarters with some jerks. The fried pickles are very good. They are served with a delicious dipping sauce. They will satisfy your craving for vinegar and fried at the same time. The crab tacos are good. The eggplant parm is OK. I kinda wish I had tried the boar tacos because I love the idea of eating anything that could probably kick my ass in a one-on-one fight. I suppose this means I will be returning. On the action-movie-parallel-satisfaction-scale, this place is Willow(damn right, I liked Willow).

After a few solid visits I'm happy to dub SPTR easily one of the favorite bars of my hood. And that's before I give it the essential brunch test. If Happy Hour didn't start during the unheard of time of 4PM, it would hands down be a candidate for my top 5 in Philly. But even still the 1/2 off local draughts and appetizers manage to make itpretty legendary. small plates like the oysters, and even the head cheese tacos for the curious, can be pretty slamming. and appetizers like the wild boar tacos and tomato lager soup 9with mini grilled cheese bites!) are near impossible to resist. and other winners include the huge grass fed bacon cheese burger, and the tantalizing vegan hoagie with grilled tempeh. the rotating and well rounded tap list features plenty of local brews (The Hop Phanatic is sounding like a new must try!), but tosses in plenty of surprise hits that will win any beer lover over.

My favorite part in South Philly. This is a place that ranks with the top five in Philadelphia. Not just because its constantly pours great beers. And not because the bar itself is amazing and inviting. But because SPTR took the risks, established itself, and did so in a part of South Philly that is so much different that the gentrifying corridor known as Passyunk Ave. (east of Broad Street, anyway). SPTR has a good presence about it and will likely be pouring great American craft and Belgian classics too. The food is sometimes a wild card, but it's undergone a lot of changes recently. And as it continues to move through its evolution, SPTR remains a consistent, reliable place to drink and eat. Highly recommend the burgers and grilled cheese, too.

The bartender was too busy talking to her friends to pay attention to empty glasses.i had three beers and had to wait for all of them. The a/c barely works. Worse, some visibly drunk guy who smelled like sweaty balls and ass came and sat right next to me. When I told the manager and she gave me attitude and did nothing about it. I left the bartender a polite note and she came out after me and gave me attitude as well. She said she gave him soda, but gave me shit anyway. Two stars are just for beers on tap. Fuck this place. I won't be back.

Saw this on a Triple D show and my mouth was watering so, I had to try it. (I live 25min. away) We ordered what was on the show - fried p,b&j, ricotta donuts & boar taco's. OMG - so delicious!! But the show stopper and truly the most delicious flavour I have ever had (and now crave it often) was the Tomato Lager soup that came with my 3 Cheese Grilled Cheese. If you go, you must, must order this!!!! It's love in a cup. I can't stress this enough. Get it. You will thank me. Oh, and they are really nice and have a fun, large beer selection. I would live here if it were in my neighborhood! Ok, stop reading this and just go there....

Overall it was a great and fun place. Great beer selection. Decent prices. I would definitely return. I had the mussels and burger with a side of mac and cheese. All three were awesome. The service was very team oriented, although our individual server is the only thing holding me back raving. very hard to track her down. Definitely a nice low key spot! Check it out!

One of my favorite places in South Philly to eat and drink. If you're a beer drinker, they have a wide array of beers from almost everywhere. I always go with the Alagash White which is light and very yummy. As for the menu, the menu is limited - which is what I like. I hate going into a restaurant and have to flip through a novel of a menu. My favorites: the strawberry/greens salad, the grilled green tomatoes and homemade mozzerella salad (which is pistachio oil, aged balsamic vinegar, toast), the macaroni and cheese (you MUST try their mac and cheese - it is EXCELLENT!), the tomato lager soup which comes with pieces of grilled cheese in the soup, and the eggplant parm. (I'm getting hungry just writing this and am tempted to walk down to the Taproom for dinner!) This place will NOT disappoint!!
