This is pretty much our work happy hour spot since it's right across the street, and easily accessible to 30th street station. Missed the train? Stop by Slainte. Have a craving for fries? Stop by Slainte. The place reminds me of a classier Kildare's. At lunch time, you'll find construction workers to business professionals. Beware: can be a lengthy wait during the hours of 11:30 - 1:30 pm. This place has a pretty decent draft list that changes with the season. And a major plus for me - Mad Elf in the winter time! :)

A group of us stumbled upon this cool pub after a show at World Cafe Live (it's right up the road). Slainte has a decent menu (both drinks and food) and the Irish pub atmosphere I was expecting. Their cheese fries were good and I liked the free shelled peanuts available for the taking. They have lots of TV's too so I imagine it would be fun to watch games here.

My coworkers and I came here for a birthday gathering on a Friday night, and I was happily surprised at how everything turned out. Slainte looks a little skeezy from the outside (it's opposite from 30th Street Station, a bit of a rough corner with all the hustle and bustle there) but on the inside, cozy Irish decor mingled with the typical pub fluorescent trimmings and sports bar atmosphere. Plus, CLEAN. Omg, was it ever clean, from the seats to the tables to even the bathrooms. I didn't have a problem putting my elbows on the table, that's for sure! They have a wide beer selection and a pretty decent food menu. Though the food itself wasn't outstanding, it's a step above the usual deep-fry meals you find in lesser places. Definitely get the shepherd's pie with the mixed vegetables on the side! Our server was patient with our huge crowd and kept coming back to make sure we were settling in fine. All in all, a great place to come and celebrate after a long day at work, without none of the grubbiness of a lowkey sports bar and all of the fun. Whee!

Slainte is a modest sized venue across from 30th Street Station. We sat at the bar - the bar takes up a sizable portion of space, with flatscreens showing sports games. Reminds me of a less flowery Kildare's. It was busy and took about 15 minutes for our orders to arrive. We shared a large portion of chicken tenders and fries, a small Caesar salad, and cheesesteak egg rolls (why do restaurants feel the need to make culinary monstrosities - to be fair, they DID taste like cheesesteaks). Overall, we enjoyed our fill of bar food. Our friendly bartender and server (Mike) got us a Hoegarden and a straight shot of Vladmir vodka. Based on our service, I'd return to Slainte for more drinks - check them out!

I love this place. I used to come here a lot when I was in college at Drexel and now I make my way back with friends in that area. I feel like it is under-appreciated. Good beer selection, great specials, awesome bartenders. I really enjoy the mountain salad--fresh and delicious, and the burgers are good too. They sometimes have live music, which is fun whenever I happen to be there on that night. It's not a place that I would go out of the way for, but Slainte never lets me down when I am looking for a good meal and a low-key atmosphere. Free peanuts and darts :)

Came here whilst waiting for the megabus to DC. It is a dim quiet bar with a small crowd of regulars and travelers. I had the buffalo chicken wrap and fries for dinner. The fries were Luke warm and the buffalo chicken wrap was spicer than expected. A decent meal if you are hungry.

I returned to Slainte today for a business lunch with about 10-12 collegues - and I have to say my opinion has improved. For "bar food" my lunch was surprisingly fresh and wonderful. Our server was lovely, friendly, courteous and very efficient. (Having my firm pick up the tab never hurts!) I ordered the grilled salmon salad ($12.99) and they added extra cucumbers upon my request, The fish was delicious and grilled to perfection - not to overdone nor dry. The apps we shared included the aforementioned greasy-heavy-cheesesteak springrolls - that the guys seemed to love (I am not a big fan, I guess) and very tasty Chicken Quesadillas. Plus a generous Hummus plate. Good job, Slainte! A welcome addition to this nabe! P.S. My colleagues ordered the French Onion and "Loaded Baked Potato" soups and both looked excellent.

Gotta say I'm a fan! I visited Slainte for the first time for a business lunch. One of my coworkers had it before and the aroma it left in the office had me wanting to at least give it a try. I had a Slainte Burger which is really a cheeseburger made the way you like it, and it was good. It was fulfilling, meat was good and juicy, and fries were golden and crispy. I forget our server name but she did a great job, she was attentive without being overbearing and everything was served fast. I ended up going back about a week later, and order take out. They told me my food would be ready in 10 minutes, and it was ready in that time (although I got there in 20 it was still hot). No excessive line waiting, and nice quaint spot. You could easily do a happy hour or watch some sports here. Nice without being too boring or too rowdy. A lot of the windows show a nice view of market street and the center city skyscrapers

I am on the fence about Slainte. It seems sometimes I go there and the service is great, sometimes it's lousy. The food is pretty solid, though there was the occasional sweetpotato fry that was undercooked. Their prices are fairly expensive, owing to it's location, I would imagine, but you can get a good amount of food for under 10 bucks if you're trying to be frugal. So we're going with three stars. A little bump up because they have Harpoon IPA on tap. But all in all, Slainte is just fine, like when someone you don't know very well asks how your day is going. But when there are so many places you could go to that are fine like when you see someone smokin' walk down the street and and say to your self, damn you're lookin fiiiiiiiine, plain old fine just isn't as exciting.

I've been here twice. Here's how it went: Happy Hour: crowded. slow service. but fries were yum diddly delicious. we got every single french fry offered. cheese did the weird gross thing when it gets cold and congeals. in like 2 minutes. that sucked. Random Friday night at 9pm: loud-ass music could barely make conversation which is weird because there were like 10 people in the bar, clearly not there to start a dance party. One waiter. So service was slow. Waiter tried to make up for it by being good looking.

A good option in three situations. 1) You are thinking about going to New Deck but would like a better beer selection, better food, and friendlier clientele 2) You are waiting for a train at 30th Street and have enough time to grab a beer or sandwich 3) You want to hang out, have a good time, and watch some sports. The downside of Slainte is the location, but that is also what makes it great. It really is the only option within a few blocks of where it is. It's a classic Irish Pub with an impressive bar. It looks like it was pretty expensive to build this place. The food is pub grub but better than most places you'll go to. As someone else mentioned the bathrooms are also clean which is a big thumbs up.

In celebration of nurses week, what do you do but drown your work sorrows in a pint or two (or three).. So to help our nurses "celebrate" I found myself at Slainte.. Convenient if you're hanging out at 30th Street Station but not much else around... It might have been the fact that there were 20 or so cute nurses around but the service was pretty amazing.. Before you could place your finished pint glass down, it was picked up and another one was promptly served..I guarantee if this was a "celebrate your ER doc" event we would largely be ignored- thank you ladies!! Needless to say we were all pretty liquored up after a mere hour and thus found ourselves helping one of our co-workers karaoke his heart out to "Sex on Fire".. Added bonus- heard the Strokes and Phoenix on rotation on the jukebox. Love it!!! Maybe its not another generic Irish bar???

I recommend the following plates: -philly cheese steak rolls (addictive) -french onion soup (good flavor) -fries (I'm usually not a fry fan. These are good.) Good beer selection. Good happy hour specials. Lotsa "Slaintes" going on here!

  • ED W.

Love this place. food is very good, Bangers (sausage) and mash is awesome. Beer selection is decent, especially if you like the English and Irish stuff. The inside is nice, dark like a real pub. The bartenders are all nice as well. Sometimes it gets over crowded with the Irish drunks, (redundant) but thats to be expected. Cool place.

First and foremost- The bathrooms are cleanest bathrooms I've seen in a bar! Major points for that. My food and beverage experiences at Slainte have always been great. Awesome beer selection. Food is pretty tasty- better than your usual bar food. Staff is always friendly and welcoming and you can't beat the location. Perfect for pre/post World Cafe Live shows drinks and eats or when you have time to kill before/after catching a train.

Went here before a music show at The World Cafe which is five minute walk away. They had a $5 burger special that began at 7PM, so we ordered the sweet potato fries to stave off our hunger before our waitress could put in our burger order. They were good. The angus burgers were also good and we saved about $3 on each of them. They've got a really good selection of esoteric beers. Service was perfect on a slow Monday night. This place must get really noisy when it gets busy.

Lovely service, average or slightly-above-average food. My highly-recommended Salmon BLT was small and dry, but the cheese fries were pretty darn tasty. This is a good choice if you need to stick close to the train station and you're not feeling too picky, or if you just want a laid-back place to meet up with friends for a few pints and some pub food. If you accept it for what it is, it's actually pretty good (hence the four star rating). If you're looking for innovative gastropub cuisine, head elsewhere. PS: Pronounce it slahn-jah, not slaint.

LISTEN: Food's ok. Drinks are ok. Prices are ok. Bathroom? FREAKIN' SPOTLESS. Pristine, immaculate, spick-and-span, remarkable, exceptional, extraordinary, amazing, astonishing, astounding, sensational, stunning, incredible, unbelievable; marvelous, magnificent, wonderful, outstanding, singular, out of the ordinary, unusual, unprecedented; informal fantastic, terrific, tremendous, stupendous, awesome, out of this world; literally wondrous. Yes, I'm finished with the thesaurus now. I have NEVER been to a food establishment with a bathroom this clean. So help me God, but I felt tempted to put the cheeks directly on the seat. I'm almost ashamed that I didn't. I hope the same janitorial crew works in both the restrooms and kitchens. I want to hire them for my house.

Started going here when it first opened and when I was going to school at Drexel. The place is nice and the food was good - typical bar food. Nachos and fish chips are good. I would go back but its sorta out the way now that I don't go to school anymore. Give it a try if you're in the area.

Take note Kildare's: THIS is how you do an Irish Pub. Take note Bridgewater: this is how you do a PUB! As a frequent commuter into University City I have, on many occaisions, gotten to 30th street, looked at the schedule and gone "AN HOUR WAIT!?! What am I going to do?" That used to be Bridgewater. When I got tired of paying $10 for a single beer (after tip, admittedly) I decided to try Slainte, and I'm glad I did. The interior is gorgeous and inviting, with tons of dark wood and a station at the front for peanuts for those who want to snack on something while you throw a few back. Drink prices are extremely reasonable and they have a great happy hour (cheap apps and dollar off drinks)

A bit out of the way for a normal bite, but this Irish sister of New Deck Tavern definitely deserves some more attention. The decor in the place is eye catching with bottles, signs, and trimmings that really take you back in time and across the pond. It was nice and dim when we went, so the place seemed cosy despite the large size of the restaurant. The beer selection is also great. They have classic mixes like Snake Bite and Shanty, but they also do some other nice beer duos like cider and Guinness. Now you don't have to pick which beer you want, you can have them both! The food is very reasonable. The entrees and salads are good sizes, almost all under $15. Our fish and chips was light and flaky, and came with a delicious chunky tarter sauce. The mountain salad had sweet, ripe strawberries and grapes, despite the less than summery season. This is definitely a step above your average, run of the mill Irish pub and I will definitely be going back soon. Slainte!

Food was okay for a bar. Medium size establishment. Doesn't seem to be a bad place for a quick drink after work.

Probably my favorite spot near 30th St. Station. I have been here about 3 times and have always had a good experience with the quality of the food, the promptness of the service, and drink selection. The Roast Beef sandwich with Au Jus is my personal favorite. Served on a fresh roll with a slice of fresh provolone, this sandwich will satisfy your hunger pangs. The interior is pretty neat, some tables have large, vintage couches for seating. When we dine here, we usually are in a hurry. Thankfully, the servers here are very accomodating.

Cheap food and drinks, and everything is really good for bar food. It's a little off the beaten path, but its a great place to stop if you going to catch a train at 30th street. If you tell them ahead of time that you are going to catch a train, you can usually get in and out in about 30 minutes, which is pretty quick in my opinion. The hickory burger is my personal favorite, and I would even go so far as to say it is one of the better burgers in town (excluding the gourmet burger places). If you go during the University City restaurant week, you get a great deal.

If you work in University City or frequent 30th st station, this is a great location! They have awesome happy hour specials. The food's pretty good, considering it's standard bar fair. I've gone here for lunch as well, and the waitress was great--she brought our check out with the food as she knew we were on a time constraint. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood!

Let's start off with the worst service I have experienced in Philadelphia, thus far. Waitress took 10 minutes to get to my table for the first time, another 8 minutes to bring my first diet coke, etc. I did not get better from there. The host seemed to be either doing crosswords or something else at the front desk the whole time (my table was 5 feet from there and he offered no help!) I ordered the french onion soup and that was good at a good price. I ordered the turkey dinner. Now, I LOVE turkey, could eat it everyday, etc. My plate arrived (after a very long wait and no check in from the waitress) and it looked like a pile of slop like you'd see the troops on MASH getting in the old days. The turkey was tasteless, the mashed potatoes were unrecognizable and just a pile of brown stuff. I have pretty plain taste so it does not take much to impress me. This food was fit for a dog, at best! Between the absentee waitress, crosswording host, and slop for food ... I will not be heading back here and I recommend you not even waste your time either. I should mention this was a Tuesday night so no excuse.

Things this place is good for: -Johnny Byrne's Monday Night Irish Jam sessions -Happy hour -Beers before a train or Bolt bus Things this place is not so good for: -Lunch As long as you stick to what's good and avoid what's bad, you can have a great time here. But honestly, I am not a huge fan of the food here; but the happy hour snacks are tolerable when they are super cheap. And its super convenient location make it a no-brainer.

I went here for uni city dining days with two if my girlfriends. This is a place we all would pass by every day and not think twice about lol On their pre fixe menu I got the meatball sliders as an appetizer which was good; the roast beef sandwich which was soooo bland; andfor dessert the cookie dough eggrollz with ice cream. The actual egg rols were really good but they were hot when put into the ice cream so by the time the ice cream came it was almost all melted. But for $15 It was a decent experience. The ambiance is cute but the AC was very low and was uncomfortable coming from blazing heat outside. I would go again but definitely not a go to for food which is fine since its a bar.

Ordered the tuna, but was told, "I know it's on the menu but we haven't had it for months and probably won't get it back in." Then ordered the Cod sandwich, which was a daily special. Some reason the specials are more expensive than the standard menu items. For $10, there was hardley any cod. It was like eating a salad (lettuce, tomato, and onion) with tartar sauce on a long italian roll. Horrible. Told the waitress, she said she would let the kitchen know. No manager is ever present here. don't waste your time with the specials.....like most reviews say....stick with the burgers, fries, and beer.

I came here for lunch today (Sunday before St. Patty's) which was both a good thing and bad thing. I got there before the parade let out so there was virtually no one in the pub. That was nice, but that also meant that there was no one to seat you. I'm still not sure whether you're supposed to seat yourself or wait for someone to come seat you, since I've seen both happen. The waitress was very friendly and the service was great. My friend and I both had trouble deciding what to get since there was a lot on the menu that looked good. We decided to not go for the traditional burger and chicken finger food- but in honor of being in a pub for st.patty's we both got the Shepard's Pie. It was ok. Nothing spectacular. My friend described hers as too juicy and mine had barely any juice and was really meaty. However, the soda bread and vegetable side were delicious. They alone deserved 4 stars. After lunch we decided to stay since there was supposed to be a band and dancers. So we moved to the bar and decided we would enjoy happy hour. I've never seen so many kids sitting at a bar in my life. Actually, I've never seen a kid sit at a bar. So that was a first for me. I didn't know kids where even allowed But I surmised that they all came straight from the parade here with their parents. The band started late and by the time the music came on it was so crowded and loud (full of families) that we couldn't enjoy the music. Kids and their parents where pressing in on us and the bar was severely understaffed for the influx of customers. We eventually decided that it had gotten way too crazy so we left our money on the bar, since the bartender didn't come back to give us a bill, and left. Honestly, someone definitely could have left without paying, it was that congested in there. (We didn't of course, but they should pay a little bit more attention to their customers.) All in all it was okay. I definitely will come back to try the deck burger (for 7.99 who wouldn't?). I probably should have gone with that but the shepherd's pie filled me up so I won't complain.

I went here last Saturday and was pleasantly surprised. For some reason it reminded me of a more upscale TGI Fridays. Is that weird? We ordered some beer off of their ample draft list. My friend got the best cheese fries in the world (and I know my cheese fries). The service was good - we asked for a rather obscure shot (bong water - have you heard of it? It's good!) and they obliged us. There was a live band which was enjoyable. As another person mentioned in a review, it's a bit out of the way but a good place to go on the way to or from Center City. Plus it's right on top of the el so it's pretty easy to get around after stopping in.

stopped in here to grab a drink with an old friend. Live music, friendly bartenders. Cheap drinks, and pretty clean for an irish pub. open later than world cafe live, and felt pretty safe. two asian men, two black men, a white boy from ATL, and an asian jew in five inch heels walk into a bar playing Rob Thomas music... there's not punch line. That sums up my evening ;)

I am a bastion of useless knowledge and have a wicked competitive streak, so it is surprising that I had not gotten into Quizzo before this. I went to Slainte for their Tuesday night Quizzo (OK, their ads spell it with one "Z" but this is a travesty. I'm just gonna correct it for 'em). I had never been here and the location had me a bit concerned - I figured it could either be overrun with undergrads or a bit sketch - but it was neither of these things. I was pleasantly surprised, to the point that I'm almost afraid to talk about it on the internet for fear that the Uggs-and-skinny-jeans-wearing, bro-hugging undergrads are going to come take it over. Our waitress was super-friendly and quick to notice when we needed drink refills. She managed to compliment both of our drink choices, which always makes me happy - I feel like I've passed some kind of super-secret test. She also informed us that after 10p almost everything on the menu was going to be $5, which is PRETTY FREAKIN' AWESOME. Food was standard pub fare with a few healthy options, nothing incredibly awesome but it was all good. Check plus. Quizzo was just as fun as I anticipated. I was there with one person, I recommend bringing friends with esoteric knowledge and at least one person who has paid attention to pop culture for the past 10 years. Even if you fail utterly though (that would be us), you'll have a good time. It was a nice way to spend an evening while spending a reasonable amount of money for food and drinks.

Was just in Slainte the other day for Happy Hour and had a pretty decent time. My only complaint is really that 1 dollar off draft and some 5 dollar apps is a kind of stringent happy hour menu so I think if they really tried something greater could be taking place. Other than that my waitress was nice, my food was good and my beer was cold (except you always put orange with a Blue Moon, I mean is that something you should really have to ask for ever? really?) The bar definitely is an interesting mix of clinetele, you have the Drexel kids who don't want to walk all the way to New Deck or are fearing it will be overpacked, you have the commuters on their way to the train from work or play, and then you have the randoms, and what in the work is that guy wearing. Certainly a good place for some wings and people watching.

Stopped by to pass some time at the bus station, and found this quaint Irish establishment. I wasn't there long, but enjoyed a good beer selection and $5 appetizer menu. The place seemed cool and if you have some time to kill next time your waiting at the station, drop in and have a pint.

CROOKS!!! Went to Slainte for happy hour. There were happy hour specials advertised multiple places on menus and printed daily special sheets. Apparently the servers were not aware of these specials. From 5-7 there were $5 appetizers, $1 off all drafts, and I think $0.50 off wine. Also all day on Wednesday there was a special drink for $3.50 for some black cherry Jim Beam. Got the bill and no happy hour prices were used. Everything was full price from apps to drinks. Asked the server to fix the bill because of this error, comes back with $3.50 off the tab - when at least $12 should've been taken off and had already run the tab on my friend's card. Really wanted to like this place because of its convenience, but will never go back when someone literally steals money from me.

I went in here to grab a quick bite before the Son Volt show at WCL. Slainte is located literally right next to the 30th Market/Frankford entrance/exit and across the street from the 30th St Amtrak station. It's also right down the street from Drexel. So it seems to be at the nexus for commuters and students. As such the crown inside was fairly diverse, ranging from students, professors, business guys, to the construction guys sitting next to me. I ended up sitting at the bar, since the host did not deem to acknowedge me after standing around for at least 5 minutes. The bald headed bartender/Mr. Clean took my order for beer promptly and gave me a menu. The Sam Adams Oktoberfest was nice and crisp and tasty. The Guinness he poured for me was perfect, not too much head, just enough. Since I came after 7 I thought I'd get charged full price, but he gave me the happy hour price for both beers. Sweeet. The California wrap I had was ok, but nothing special. The fries were decent and plentiful. Service from the bartender was excellent. He was attentive without being intrusive and was very fast at pours. He also knew his crowd and talked to some of the regulars. I could see coming back here for a happy hour and to get some of their $5 appetizers. I"m not sure I'd come back for the food though.

Good honest really tasty food that sticks to your ribs, some great Guiness mixed drinks (yes you heard right) homey relaxing atmosphere, great location and nice people. I have had fish and chips in London (where admittedly it is harder hese days to get a really authentic slab) and these are very simliar. Price is really low especially for what you get. An all-time favorite.

Visited on a Sunday night, 8:30-11. 9-11 is Yuengling $2 pint drafts and $3 bottles. We came in a group, a Yelp after party, if you will. You were wonderfully accommodating, and I promised I'd mention that server Dan P was especially attentive and accommodating of our crowd. I think the drinks came perfectly balanced, which is very nice. Sometimes you love when drinks come strong, but they're not necessarily delicious. Here, you get booze, but also scrumptiousness. You treated our group to kamikazes--- thanks, they were great! Also, in addition to a plethora of drinks, we got the nachos and the "awesome fries." These were fantastic, like over-the-top perfect for satisfying grease cravings while drinking... DELICIOUS. Even without happy hour specials, this was a great night for service, food, drinks, and the game- thanks for having both soccer and football on screens all over the freaking place. :)

Slainte has become the de-facto "Need to grab a drink before my long train/bus ride" destination. Better than the pub in 30th St (and less desperate in pricing), and more satisfying than the McDs and Taco Bell nearby. The beer selection is decent, and the food is everything you'd expect and want out of a pub atmosphere. You like nachos, wings, and burgers? Good, because they've got that in abundance. The service has been okay- not slow by normal pub standards, but it may just feel slow if you're supposed to catch a train. It's probably a best bet for Drexel students who are ready to welcome the weekend and need a place within easy walking distance. (And not loaded with Penn students)

Went here before a show we were seeing in the University City area. It is just across the street from 30th Street Station, and just down the street from Drexel University. We we able to get street parking about 2 blocks down the street, so that is always a plus. Service was sufficient for dinner. We tried the mac and cheese appetizer that had just the right amount of breadcrumbs on it. It was served hot, but with average taste. We also tried the cheeseteak egg rolls - decent, but not a lot of meat in them. Some of the bites I had of the egg roll were merely the fried dough without getting to any of the cheese and meat. They were served with ketchup and a special mustard that had some horseradish in it for a bit of a kick! I must say, it is a neat thing for a Philadelphia Pub to have on a menu. For our main entrees, we both had the chicken pot pie. The vegetables were plentiful, and the chicken was all white meat, though there was not that much of it. The crust was somewhat flaky, but there was a section of my pot pie crust that didn't seem like it was cooked all the way through. Dessert portion sizes were huge! We had the bread pudding which was average in taste, and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The brownie was served ala mode with vanilla ice cream as well. The brownie was definitely dry and lacking in taste, though I consider myself to be a brownie snob, so maybe I'm being overly picky.

Good food at reasonable prices. I'm surprised at how good it was, given the proximity to the train station. Bartender was great. Very prompt and courteous. Food came out exactly how I wanted it, and fairly quickly too. Good beer selection. Plenty of whiskeys and other liquors to choose from.

Three stars?! All right, all right. I'm only rating this place based on its happy hour deals; namely, $5 appetizers -- HUUUUGE appetizers! generally leaving me so full especially after having downed two or four beers that I can't, or shouldn't be able to, finish my burger but do so anyway because my stomach can stretch to unbelievable proportions even if it means having to waddle for hours after that... [inhale, exhale, calm down] Music? TV? I'm only ever in a bar for the booze and the food. And it's so stupid good. Are you kidding? I love bar food.

Pretty much your standard Irish bar. Nothing really to write home about.....this place caters to a lot of travelers waiting around at the 30th street station. Beer selection is decent, good selection on tap. Food is okay, it's your standard bar food. I'd say overall the place is slightly above average versus the average Irish bar, but just by a hair. If I could, I'd give it 3.25 stars.

As other reviewers have said, this place is best for its convenience and not much more. The food is pretty average--I had the barbecue burger, which tasted all right, with some pretty crunchy fries. The drink specials aren't bad, making it a decent place to visit after work, especially given its proximity to Penn, Drexel, and 30th Street Station. Don't expect anything too great and you won't be disappointed.

decent nachos.. from what I recall also I think they were very accommodating of all us yelpers who stormed in post the JGD elite event.. the waitress was attentive... and I like that... also it's right across from 30th street, and the football game was on . what else could I have asked for at the time?

Considering the area around Slainte(across the street from 30th st station), I was surprised how nice it was inside. This is a nice clean pub with a decent beer selection and a nice seating area. The bar is pretty big, and there's also plenty of seating in the adjacent dining area. The service was good and the prices weren't too bad. It's not a sports bar, but there are plenty of flat screen televisions around the bar and dining area so it's not a bad place to watch a game. All in all I'd say it's just a good place to have a Guinness with some friends. Oh, and in case you were wondering, Slainte is Gaelic for 'cheers'.

Its really quite a parallel experience to something like Tir Na Nog or Fado. The differences between these three Irish-style bars is only location, configuration, and size. Slainte' is as big as Tir Na Nog and feels even more roomy, somehow. All three have solid, reliable food --large portions--and sizzling drink service. What makes Slainte pretty great is that it is a genuine haven for travelers arriving weary and drained from 30th St station. Its a godsend in that regard. You come shuffling in loaded down with baggage while you collect yourself and get your plans together; call your friends to come pick you up and in the meantime just enjoy that beautiful, great and wonderful 'feel' of Philly. That sound of peace and quiet; gentleness; a sound of relaxation and calm. On a weekend afternoon Slainte will likely only have a few customers but you listen to them and realize they're not dangerous; they can't be anything else but harmless. This is Philly. In fact they will probably sound pretty courteous even if they're sports-bar louts or college kids. Order a burger, it comes out perfect. Sit there with a tall stein of amber beer...thats the way I've enjoyed Slainte and I hope it stays there for a long time. GREAT addition to West Philly. I bet it rocks with hot, smart co-eds on weekend nights.

From the people who brought you The New Deck, it's another average Irish pub. Slainte is a lot cleaner than The New Deck, a little classier looking and less pub-y. It also attracts (when I am there -- I have only been for happy hour) more of a professional crowd and less college kids. The beer selection is not bad, they do have Dogfish Head 60 minute on tap. As Meredith mentioned, they do know how to make a car bomb. The food is average. The servers are decent. The prices are OK; the happy hour deal is not great. The location is certainly not conducive to a night on the town, but it is convenient for coworkers who take the train home and right by the El stop. It gets a little crowded for happy hour but we have been lucky getting tables right around 5:00.

Quite spacious and somewhat out of busy Center City district. But the atmosphere clean and pleasant. I got a free beer glass when I was there. Cool, chill happy hour time on weekdays. I liked it.

The food was pretty good and the beer selection was good, just pricey. The 2 stars are for the lousy service we got. The hostess just stood around and did nothing while the 1 waitress was preoccupied with watching Tim Tebow all night. Her loss since she just cost herself tip money, but her poor serving skillz took away from our night just a tad.

Very cool pub with authentic Irish bar and great burgers. Beer selection is extensive and they have my favorites - Smithwick's and Guinness. Live Irish music on Mondays also.

came here with some classmates for the last night of University City Dining Days. nice place, rather unassuming entrance, and free, self-serve peanuts at the door! i had their french onion soup and an order of their old bay fries. i was pleasantly surprised by the soup--i LOVE french onion soup and typically get it whenever i go to a new place. Slainte's is definitely up there: cheesy, oniony, beefy, hot, nice consistency, and under $4. but, alas, it all went downhill from there. i do not consider myself any sort of food snob. i know good food when i have it, but more importantly, i know BAD food when i have it. simply, the old bay fries were inedible. the amount of salt used was insane--it was like eating a salt lick. i had my friends try some, in case it was just me, but they passionately agreed that they were disgusting and inedible. as well as not being a food snob, i'm also not a dick when it comes to complaining about crap in a restaurant. but, on principle, i felt it necessary to notify the back to take it easy on the salt next time (unless this was an isolated incident). when we paid for our bill, i politely suggested to the server as such. i didn't necessarily expect to get comp'd or anything, but i certainly did not expect sass. i tell him to try one, he declines and proceeds to tell me that "well, you know, fries usually come with salt and pepper." thanks, jackass, i know that. "and, old bay seasoning has salt in it and stuff." um, yeeeah, i know what old bay tastes like--that's why i ordered it. one bonus star for the french onion soup and peanuts.

Stopped here for a few Yuenglings after a show at World Cafe Live (see earlier review - I didn't want to give them any more of my money after their stunt at the Gurus show). The place was packed, as it was Game 2 of the playoffs, and the Phillies won. The bartender was getting pounded three deep, and he still managed a "How are ya?" when he took my order. Really enjoyed it!

I definitely had high expectations walking in to Slainte, having gone to Drexel I am a huge fan of Slainte's "sister bar" New Deck Tavern. It was definitely an after work happy hour crowd. They had decent specials on beer but the food specials were the real highlight. they had several appetizers for just $5 and didnt skimp on the portions. I ordered the Nachos and it was easily enough for four maybe even five people. I was almost embarrassed to have the plate in front of me. Overall everything was good, service, food, beer, etc but it was just that.. good. It didn't knock my socks off and I'm just not sure I'd make the effort to go back.

Haven't eaten there, but a great place to grab a beer after work. Bartenders are helpful and nice.

Went here with a couple people on a Friday night. The place was surprisingly dead. Maybe it was because the Drexel students were on winter break? But A+ on the finger foods, especially the cheese fries! Extra crispy fries are my weakness. Had a Guiness and Mad Elf with my fries and it was perfect. The only reason I dont give it 5 stars is because they werent serving their special martini menu that night, and I was really looking forward to that. Boo!

  • A S.

I've been there a few times. The prices are Ok but the service really isn't that good. Awesome fries though! I have no problem going there if everyone in my group wanted to go. I certainly won't be taking my girlfriend there on a date though.

Ate here as an alternative to 30th Street Station fare on a two hour stop-over. Cannot recommend at all for the food. Turkey dinner is more like 3-4 smal pieces of turkey on one piece of toast. The turkey was good, but was less than an appetizer portion. The waitperson also got my order wrong as I ordered the additional ceasar, but she substituted the salad for the mashed. The salad was over dressed with way too much vinegar in the dressing; and the roll was stale. I then ordered the mac and cheese, which looked ok and the crumb topping was hot from the salamander, but then the center was still refrigerator cold. At least the iced tea was good, the staff was helpful and the beer selection looked good, but all in all, a culnary disaster.

Despite my 3 star rating, I actually do enjoy Slainte. Their problem is everything is completely average from the crappy karaoke selection to the overpriced and bland fish and chips. They do pour a really good Guinness though and the service has always been friendly (although sometimes a bit slow). It is definitely an escape from the Penn and Drexel undergrads who yearn for an Irish style pub over at New Deck. (Slainte is actually owned by the New Deck people.)

    (3)
  • Michelle S.

Nice place. I went on karaoke night, which is never my favorite night to be anywhere. (Thursdays at Slainte). Luckily I arrived a little bit before it kicked off, so I had time to enjoy my Red Breast, 1 cube please, in relative peace.Decent and reasonably priced Irish Whiskey offerings. Average beer selection. Worth a trip whenever you find your self on the other side of the Schuykill.

Unassuming exterior with some nice woodwork interior. Slainte has been very accommodating for several large group happy hours we've had there. Capable staff, average unoffensive bar food (I like the bag of steak cut fries/chips better than the cheese fries (smaller, coated)), variety of cocktails and interesting things on tap. Good place to drink, snack and talk to your friends without having to yell; maybe not the best place to meet people or eat fantastic things.

This is a place to be! They are quiet during the week, so if you just want to chill out and watch some TV, then this is the place to do it, with good pub food, good beer, and friendly service. But if you enjoy life a little louder, I'd try a Saturday night- a great atmosphere and fun people. And did I mention good bartenders? They make the carbombs right, and don't charge too much for them. The location is less than ideal, given that the only thing close is the train station, which is especially irritating if you're driving in, but don't let that stop you!

    (4)

Decent cheesesteak but the meat was dry. Decent pub close to the train station so I can't complain.

Decent. This is essentially a classier New Deck located, for some reason, roughly six blocks away from New Deck itself. The service has been pretty good when I have been there. I am mainly there for the $5 late night menu which contains the norm: burgers, chicken fingers, etc. The beer selection is alright. The menu seems pretty much the same as New Deck and the quality about the same. There are a number of TV's in this bar/pub so it is a pretty nice place to watch games since they have the late night food special. The jeopardy on Monday nights is a pretty good time. This place has been pretty empty when the majority of the time I have been there, definitely a different crowd/atmosphere than most of the University City restaurants/pubs.

we were here for a late lunch on a saturday.. the beer list is ok...there were hardly any patrons at tht time given the time of day..... the food was tasty pub fare... the service was good..their happy hours is not too cheap..but all in all its worth a visit if you are in the area.....their location is kinda in a bare area with nothin else around....

Pretty good Irish pub, There wasn't too much Irish food available, but what I ate was pretty good. I had a salad with candied nuts, grapes, strawberries, and chicken. The chicken was spiced well, everything paired well. I would have liked the salad a bit larger, but it wasn't bad at all. The fries were terrific. Large enough to have a soft interior surrounded by a crisp exterior. Well cooked. Moscow Mules were good, well made. The second round that we ordered didn't come in a copper mug and was significantly smaller due to the glass. Good enough to come back to, check it out if you're in the area.

Stopped in here for lunch around 1pm. I ordered a soup and salad special ($7) and my friend ordered a burger and fries ($9). My food was good, nothing spectacular, but hey its only soup and salad. My friend's burger looked awesome, and he said it was great. They also have free peanuts which I loved. Our waitress brought over our check as soon as we were done eating but we wanted to stay and chat (esp. since it wasn't at all busy). The waitress came by at least 3 times for our payment within 10 mins. You would think she would have been nice considering we did not tip yet. I look forward to stopping in again, hopefully I'll get a different waitress.

Full bar, plenty of tvs and huge portions on the food. It's a great spot to stop if you're at 30th St. Station or just looking for a good sports bar. The bartender was welcoming and nice, although not the most attentive, but the drinks were delicious and the food was perfect. Definitely a place to try.

Typical Irish Pub. Nice beer specials and awesome burgers. The location makes for an interesting crowd. A mix of commuters/travelers from 30th Street, a few college kids from UCity, and CC folks. Not sure I have much else to say except that I enjoy this place.... You can also select your own music from a machine near the bar. Which can be a good or bad thing! Good for cazzh (casual) drinks after work or a low key night with some friends. I'm a fan.

My first time was celebrating a co-worker's new job. The appetizers were okay, but I decided to try the fish and chips, beer battered with steak fries. The steak fries were okay, but the beer battered cod was great. Actually, it was wonderful, and more than I could eat. So, what did I do? I made a repeat attendance with a friend a few weeks later, and we both ordered the fish and chips. Same good quality. Same excellent taste. And the beer and hard cider selection is "intoxicating." Will return again. Next time I will take my wife and take a few photos.

Let's just put it this way: I won't go out of my way to come here, but I won't dismiss it altogether. It's just so-so. I work at the Cira Centre a block away so coworkers and I came here a few weeks ago for a Thursday night happy hour which then turned into all of Thursday night (you know how that goes). If it wasn't so close to work and we weren't so sick of JG Domestic being our only option, I probably would have never picked the place. Overall, we did have a good time. I will attribute it to our several rounds of drinks and the Stoli vodka girls handing out free jugs of spiked lemonades for free, which is always nice. The service is a little slow. It was fairly packed during the hours of 5 to 7, but after that it died down and I still felt like I had to wait a while. Our server, though very congenial and helpful, did disappear for quite some time (it seemed more like the bar was backed up, rather than server issues). The food left little to be desired- we ordered a couple appetizer samplers for our table and everything felt either dry, overdone, or bland. The spinach and artichoke dip lacked flavor, the chips were overly salty and stale, the chicken was mehh. The only thing I enjoyed was some type of cheesesteak spring roll. That was tasty. The selection of drinks and food is pretty expansive and they DID execute my whiskey sour perfectly, so maybe I would give this place another try during the fall or winter when the outdoor happy hour spots close down for the season.

Came here after midnight, little disappointed at their banger and mash dish. This had a little green shamrock next to the item on their menu which means it's one of their specialty. But it wasn't great at all. The bangers or sausage tasted like breakfast sausage right from a frozen box. Under my four sausage they loaded up on mash potatoes that cover up my plate. I think the dish was to come with side of vegetables, but it was late and they probably ran out. But anyways, basically it was terrible, I should just stick with a burger. The bar was kind of neat, had that old tavern charm and you can get numerous beers from tap. It's right by the Amtrak station on 30th street in Philly and right next to Drexel university. You can stop by here for a drink while waiting for your train ride or order food but don't order their bangers and mash! Lol

Right by Philly's Amtrak/bus station so if you are looking to waste some time and get a good drink, stop by Slainte. Food portion size is huge. I ordered a burger and fries and I couldn't finish the whole thing. Burger was cooked perfectly. No complaints whatsoever. And the place was relatively cheap. We had food and drinks for 2 of us and the bill was around 40 dollars. Everybody was cool from the bartender to the locals. Will stop by again.

The place was fine, but really nothing special. Good place for a happy hour. Good beer selection. Good service. Good food. Nothing really stood out to say I'm a fan. Fish on the fish and chips were good, but the chips were plain fries.

  • Amanda G.

We came here for dinner because there wasn't really any other option for us; there isn't a lot in the way of nice restaurants within walking distance to World Cafe Live. The happy hour specials are good - lots of $5 apps, of which we got three. The hummus platter was great, but I wish they would give you more olives and forget the diced tomatoes. The pita bread was really delicious. The spinach and artichoke dip was good, but you could tell from one bite that it was loaded with mayo and cream cheese or heavy cream or just generally fatty stuff. I mean, it was thick, thick, thick. Rich. Intense. Borderline overwhelming. The rest of the food was just OK. My chicken tenders were pretty blah and the French fries were edible but nothing to get excited about. I wouldn't make any effort to go back, but if you're in a pinch and need somewhere to eat within walking distance to WCL, it's a decent choice.

This place is really cool for a quick eat or a happy hour! It's one of those bars with a great energy no matter what time you go and is usually filled with grad students and people around that age.Occasionally the crowd is a little quirky since 30th street station is across the street so you get some randos waiting for trains and such. Food and drinks are reg, but their selection and variety is great! Underrated bar that you should def check out for hh!

My favorite pub in all of Philly. It's a place where I can kick back with a few brews and just zone out. My secret getaway from the regular pretentious center city spots. Great beer selection and killer burgers.

The French onion soup is my new favorite food. So many places make it with Swiss cheese (gag) but Slainte does it right with provolone and garlic bread. Just amazing. Their potato soup is good too, but I had to have two bowls of the French onion.

The food is not very good. I took a burger and it was exactly like the ones I buy frozen at the grocery store to cook them in the microwave for 1.5 minute. Price was fair for the quality. House wine was really good!

Great French Dip and tasty fries. Met my cousin after getting off Amtrak and before going to a Penn wrestling match. I had no idea what to expect. The food was fantastic. It's too bad I live so far away or I'd be going there at least once a week

I have no complaints about the drink or food selection here. Most of the things I've had have been great. The manager was the definition of cold and aloof. As my friends and I were sitting down at our table the manager comes over and says "you can't do this" in a sharp tone. He said we were blocking traffic, but if he would have approached us in a different manner then he would know that we simply moved the table so our friends could squeeze into our seats then slid the table back. His "cleaning of the table" consisted of wiping a few peanut shells off the table. He left the rest of the peanut shells and drink marks on the table. I went up to him and asked if he could spray the table. He said that we didn't allow him the chance to do so. My main issue is the tone he used. It honestly seemed like he had a bad day and was taking it out on the customers. He took no accountability and sat on his phone in the corner the entire time. I should mention our waiter, Mike, helped save my disaster of a night. He was beyond kind and on top of serving us. Didn't feel respected or welcomed, sadly.

Slainte Pub has a great selection of beer with decent food, but their staff is a little weak. Came here after taking the megabus. Met up with a few friends and we sat down to have some food and drinks. Only thing of note that was less than stellar was the girl that took care of us. She didn't know what was on tap and didn't take our orders properly. I ordered a chicken ceaser salad that came sans chicken. Another gentleman in our party ordered a turkey melt that came sans turkey. Maybe she was helping us to see the benefits of vegan diet? I don't know, but at least the beer was good. Stop in on a Tuesday or Thursday for trivia and karaoke respectively. Otherwise you're gonna be greeted by a dead bar and the B-Squad server.

I have wasted too many hours of my life in this "Irish Pub". It's basically a place where dumb business people, stranded travelers and suckers go to eat standard pub food that is overpriced and underwhelming. I was unfortunately a stranded traveler on Monday and instead of standing out in the blistering heat where the streets reeked of steaming garbage, I decided to suck it up and head into Slainte. Oh? You want a drink? I hope you have 25 minutes to wait for it. Oh, you want some Whiz Fries? I hope you like fries that are still frozen in the middle. This place has two redeeming qualities. Clean bathrooms and proximity to 30th Street Station.

  • Abhishek Y.

My one real gripe with Slainte is the location. It's located right near the station and the bus stand, which makes it rather convenient for travelers, but at the same time, is kind of disappointing since it really could be doing a lot more business if it was located a few blocks in either direction. In any case, standard Irish Pub fare, definitely on the higher end of prices, but good solid food and decent portions. The atmosphere is decent, and on the average weekend, you can catch some rugby and soccer matches here, which is nice if you don't want to make the trek all the way down to Center City and live in the UC area. All in all, it's a decent place, but there's other better places in the area for less money, and there's nothing that would make this any better for a traveler than Bridgewater's, which is located right inside the station.

Pop in for a meal (a very early dinner, which was around 4pm) before catching the train back (this establishment is located across for the 30 Street Train Station) home. Had banger and mash with drinks for my meal, which was good. Liked that the mash had some chuck and thickness to them. The staff was very friendly and nice. Got a kick that the there was a saying in Gallic on the bill. My only complaint was the bathroom. It was in good working order and clean. It was the size of the regular stall. If you are are person under normal size, you will not have an issue. I am not one of these people, so it was a bit of a challenge to get done what I needed to get done.

Came to Philly for the day and ended up walking into this bar, we were looking for a place to sit and grab a bite to eat. The second I walked in I loved the vibe and feel of the place, it's a true authentic Irish bar with a nice fun low key young college crowd. I sat at the bar and ordered a burger and a Stella on tap. Bartender was super friendly and she had a fun happy vibe about her. Food came rather quickly and the burger was pretty good. Reason I'm only giving this place 4 stars is because the burger was good but not phenomenal. I've def had better, but it was still a great lunch and perfect break in the day to stop in. Would def go back

We stopped in to check the spot out since it was on a TV show we watch. Grabbed some food and drinks. Was a really quite afternoon so not sure of the crowd post 5:00 but we had a very good experience. Cold beers, good bar food, and really nice/attentive staff. They have some good specials during HH and games and good sized portions with the specials too!

Standard Irish pub with reasonable bar food and decent drinks. Given the convenient location, this place is frequently crowded. Drinks are reasonably priced and the food is neither good nor bad. Service tends to be a bit slow but thusfar I've had no negative experiences with the staff. Interested in Irish imbibing? Cheers.

My friends and I were waiting on the Bolt bus back to New York so we decided to stop in. It looks like any typical Irish sports bar. Very spacious. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. That was a huge factor for the 5 stars They have $3 Yungling light bottles which was pretty nice. The hummus platter was huge and for $9, it was pretty worth it. I ordered the Salmon BLT. It was good, nothing special. Max ordered the Shepard's pie (which he loved). Denise got the chicken fingers which were also pretty standard but, the Old Bay fries the accompanied them were delicious! All in all if you're waiting on a bus or just in the area, stop on in!

Came here purely out of convenience, since it's so close to the 30th Street Station and the Megabus pick-up/drop-off. Food was completely fine, not extraordinary, but pretty good for bar food, and the bar/restaurant itself was very clean. Unfortunately the waitress we had seemed to be new and super forgetful (i.e. left my friend's bloody mary sitting at the bar for like 10 minutes in plain sight after the bartender mixed it), and the bathrooms were in terrible condition (I remember some duct tape on one of the toilets).

Great happy hour, convenient from 30th Street Station, and friendly service. Its obviously not an authentic Irish Bar, but its good if you are in a pinch and looking for something simple. Its great for pre-PSN drinks for the Penn Fields.

Cliiiiche. I do love irish theme pubs, but this reminded me of the Olive garden of irish-themed pubs. No real standouts, the same kitchy things stuck around the place as most other places like it. The only benefit I can see is that it is the fastest place to get a drink prior to getting on a train.

The ambiance was actually not bad. My husband enjoyed his burger and Imperial pint. I ordered the chicken pot pie. It's one of my favorite comfort foods and I was fully ready to indulge. It was really disappointing. It tasted liked canned chicken soup reheated with a slab of puff pastry slapped on top. It made me sad. I'm not saying don't go here; the service was generally friendly. Just stick to the burgers, I think.

I LOVE this place. They have an excellent selection of beer on tap and delicious Irish foods to accompany said beer. I believe I had the Sheppards Pie (from what I remember!) A great place to go and watch some Footy too. Finding parking may be your only challenge. Take a cab and indulge!

Stopped in for a burger and beer before the Cracker/Camper Van Beethoven show at World Cafe Live. It's an easy a 5 minute walk away. We were seated right away and the waiter was right there to take our order. They know how to pour a Guinness right and that's saying something. The burgers came out quickly and were quite good. My medium rare burger was actually medium rare. Only complaint is we had to ask for napkins. Prices were very reasonable for the quality and location. Will definitely make it our go-to site when we see shows at WCL.

Came here hungry and wanting food. Stand in the front not one give me a table. They all had an eye problem tho. I was so hungry i wasnt in to the games cause everyone was eating and drinks. It was a snow strom and i did call ahead to see if the kitchen was open cause that i was that fucking hungry. Sat at bar while everyone got drinks and food. Got up to leave the waiter comes over but to be sure i am leaving. Fuck this place.

Slainte!

Boo!
