Is there a better choice for water ice in the Philly area? Absolutely not. Rita's easily has the best taste and most consistent quality than any place around. The Northern Liberties location also had the best selection of flavors when we visited on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend...watermelon, wild black cherry (delicious and highly underrated), watermelon (my favorite flavor growing up), blueberry, and Georgia peach (a tasty up and comer on my list). Yes...I mentioned watermelon twice. It's that good. If you're in town visiting or a Philadelphia area resident, stop by Rita's in NL. You can thank me later.

Disgusting employees. This guy was sitting on the railing right out front of the door, smoking a cigarette. I asked him if he could help us. He said I'm on my break, go in someone in there. So my 2.5 year old son and I went in and ordered. We then came out and went to sit on the bench outside. I asked the employee politely if he wouldn't mind moving so we could sit there. He yelled at me, I'm on my break and you want me to move? I said, sir you are smoking right near the bench. I really don't think Ritas would appreciate your attitude and behavior. So we moved rather than cause a scene with my 2.5 year old. This guy should be fired. Never will I go to that Ritas again until he is.

Before coming out to Philly I always heard how I had to try Rita's once Summer time hit. Figured Memorial Day Weekend equals the start of Summer so I should make my way to Rita's. Gave the Cherry Water Ice and Vanilla Custard Gelati a shot since I could try out both at the same time. Water ice was definitely not what I was expecting (coming from the West Coast I expected water ice to have a shaved ice consistency with that awful, awful too-sugary syrup that customarily goes with it). Water ice is surprisingly good, though it reminds me more of a Slurpee/Icee consistency than shaved ice. Flavoring is not as sweet (good thing), and includes little chucks of what I believe were fruit. Custard was a bit too bland and somewhat chewy. Slightly disappointed with the custard. Price seemed a bit steep for what I got, but I guess that's the price you pay to indulge in a Philly institution. Will I be back? Yep, as long as the heat and humidity stay I'll need a place to cool down.

it's 88 degrees and 41% humidity at 8:30pm- i have to get out for a walk! after sweating it out for 30 minutes, i decided to go a little further towards rita's. (that's right, i'm complaining about the heat. whether i am a wuss or not about it doesn't negate the fact that this weather sucks.) water ice. in hawaii it's called shaved ice. to me it's a lot like a 7-11 slurpee. not really my thing, but i can understand how it can become a summer time necessity. i always opt for the custard, which is soft-serve ice cream that makes me really thirsty. i don't know what they put in it, but i always need a couple of pints of water after eating it. the kids that work here are very nice and polite. it's definitely just okay, but in this heat it will do.

So I happened to walk into the Fairmount Philly Flavors *just* after the local soccer team and all their parents came in. Needless to say, it was going to be at least 20 minutes before I got to have a treat. So I hightailed it on my bike down to do some adventuring and ended up turning up 2nd street. And what did I see to make me smile? A completely deserted and sun-drenched vision. Although I'm not fond of the chain too terribly much, I could really use a gelato. Needless to say, service was way over the top - they even offered me samples, and gave me a coupon on my way out. They were out of fat-free, and their flavor list was shorter than other places, but for no waiting and excellent service this was great. And the treat was great (I like mango)

I usually get my water ice from the corner store, but I figured it was time to try a Rita's since it was there and since it was as hot as the devil running a fever out that day. One of the kids working in there was very suspicious of me. It was awkward. I know I'm a character and all, but you don't have to stare. I placed my order already go to the next person. So about the water ice... I've never seen "pear" so I ran with that and it was great and I ate it right in there despite all the kids. It was so hot out I would've gotten one for the road, if not for the price. It's not expensive, just more than what I'm used to down at the corner... eh. I appreciate they offer samples too. I've since tried another location and some other flavors and now that I've finally found my free coupon IT'S ON!

i really like this Rita's. -Friendly staff--sample as much as you want, they're nice about it -Clean -Space to eat inside -A couple of benches to chill outside (i.e. a great place to people watch and eat your sugary water ice :-) ) Definitely a needed staple in the libs for the summertime!

I haven't been to any of the other Rita's around town, but I have recently decided to stop in and try the place out. I'm not typically an ice cream or custard kind of guy, but I decided I'd give the water ice a try (new to the philly area, have only had italian ice before). I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The water ice has a very nice texture, and the flavor is much stronger than I would have guessed. I tried the Mango and Cookies n' Cream flavors, and both were delicious. This location in particular is a nice little corner shop down second street, great for popping into and picking something up on the way to shopping or socializing further up in No. Libs.
