The Rib Crib has been a Germantown institution for decades and they sill produce some of the best southern style Ribs in the area. Rib Crib is one of the few places you can see the meats cooked in front of you and you can smell the smokey flavors while you sit there looking at all the photo's of famous African Americans meshing into a collage of black pride. The Ribs are tender, smokey and the barbecue sauce is one of the best i ever tasted. The staff is very professional and they get you in and out so you can go home and get down and dirty with your ribs- if they make it home that is!

Not much has changed about The Rib Crib. I used to get my hair cut as a child and teen at the barber shops on either side of it. Neither of which exists anymore while the Rib Crib is still standing. The menu is still the same, and the taste is as well. Their hours of operation are the same as well. 3 days on the weekends (Thurs-Sat). Really it is what it is. For some people it's a landmark of where to get some great Ribs in a southern style. They have a couple, and I mean a couple of sides. Some sodas and water. But, The Rib Crib is a bare-bones spot if you're just using size and interior volume as bearings. To most of us, the Rib Crib is a history of family. Not only the celebrities. But, your own family. Your grandma, mom and pops have been going to the Rib Crib since they came into existence. The Ribs are ok. They have short ribs, and normal length. They can season the them with a spicy sauce and a milder one. There really aren't any sides. Just Slaw, Macaroni Salad, and some white bread for that ass. Be happy. It's about the ribs. Are they fall off the bone??? Nahhh, they aren't. I'm not saying the food isn't good. But, I definitely have had better BBQ elsewhere in the city, and in the country. It's still home to me even if a little dated.

I have not been there in about 15 years and the ribs are as good as I remembered. The sauce is incredible, sweet and tangy with just enough heat in the 'mix' style.

I love the crib & really enjoy the food but somehow tge ambience of this place is awful. Uncomfortable seats, awful decor, apparently if you wear a tie in the Place they cut it off & hang it on the wall. What they should do is cater to guys that wear ties, make some money & remodel that dump.

As a kid I had this phobia of meat on the bone (ribs, chicken legs, pork chops, et al.) I know someone is going to turn that into a crass joke, but it's true. So, as I kid, the only thing I really ever ate from the Rib Crib was the macaroni salad. At some point my dad put his foot down, saying that it was just un-African American to dislike ribs. How can you ignore that challenge? The Rib Crib is an institution in Germantown and in our family with many a Friday night spent covered in barbecue sauce. I love that you can watch the meat being smoked right in the open pit as you wait for your order. At their best, Rib Crib ribs are smokey with fall-off-the-bone tender meat, and slathered in a sweet/tangy/spicy sauce. Unfortunately, you don't always get perfection, which is disappointing given the fact that they are open only a few days a week. I agree with Mark C. - the joint is take out only and it's frustrating to get home with your order to realize that it's been and "off day" at the Crib. In my opinion, the tangy macaroni salad can't be beat and there's nothing better than sopping up extra sauce with fluffy slices of white bread. The friendly staff can't be beat, though, and the owner has been active in the community for years. Of course, you can't miss the myriad photos of prominent black folks that adorn the walls of the small space. Those photos were some of my earliest lessons in Black History. For a biracial kid from the 'burbs, this is a place where I was actually able to connect with my African American heritage. The Rib Crib is worth a try if you're into hitting barbecue spots around the Philly area, but they may no longer be the best in the business.

This place is not as advertised. The meat is good but it's just a regular hood spot for BBQ. I asked for a pulled pork sandwich literally got two slices of white bread (that I could've bought from the store) with the meat squished in between. The most soggy sandwich I ever had.

Four starts because they vary... 3 to 5. The sauce here is banging. The ribs themselves are hit or miss. Sometimes they're not cooked long enough. 3 stars for them being a little too tough on the bone. But... when they do... they are perfect. 5 stars for succulent-ness-ess. The sides are nothing to right home about at all... I come here for the ribs.

I found out about this place on this site. Anyone who down's that resturant is a loser. Especially if you're accustomed, or looking forward to the "ol' skool" atmosphere that the rib crib flawlessly delivers. I feel as if the rib crib is impeccable in it's service, and food, because I don't eat pork, and that's the stores main dish. The beef was just as good, and I feel as if anyone who loves meat, or just the aura of originality, the rib crib is surely the way to go.

While I love the Ribs from the Crib, lately it has been a 50/50 chance as to whether or not the Ribs would be extremely tough. It is take out only. It is disappointing to get home and have $70 worth of ribs that are almost unchewable. On the other hand, when they are tender, they are the best ribs anywhere. I also wish they were open more.

How do they make the sauce???????????????? PLEASE!!!!!!!

A couple of people recommended Rib Crib for BBQ. . Because of that I tried them and found to my misfortune - the ribs were not of the best quality, truely tough, lacking in flavor and highly overpriced. I purchased two slabs...and asked for sauce on the side. I was told "we don't do sauce on the side". So...its either purchase their ribs the way that they want you to have them, or no sauce at all. Rib Crib was a BIG dissapointment for me and my family! Need I say...never again!!!

This Place puts all other rib joints to shame, I've only gotten take out here, but the ribs here are so very tasty, words are hard to describe it, just go and check it out. You won't be sorry

I decided to try this place out. I was starving and recently moved to the area. I bought the half rack of ribs. The sauce (hot) was excellent. The ribs were okay. I've had better, but I may be unfairly comparing them to Memphis BBQ which I have had multiple times.

My family has been going to the Rib Crib since I was a baby. The ribs from this little hole-in-the-wall Germantown shop are very tasty to say the least. There is no dine-in option, only take out. This never poses a problem for me as I tend to get very messy when I order the Crib's ribs. The barbequed chicken is also delicious: very tender and expertly bbq'ed. There are two sauce options, hot and mild. I always choose the hot and it is delicious in itself. The only downside is this is not the place to go if you are looking for a plethora of side options. Be happy if you get a few slices of white bread on the side. Even with this, I'll still give the Rib Crib five stars!

Ok so I was hungry & hadn't had ribs in a while. I never been to the Rib Crib but I saw it as I was driving on Germantown Ave. The "doorman" greeted us & even took our hands as we exited. I ordered a 1/2 rib platter with mild sauce. I received the food fast and was on my way. Then I got home as was like wtf! A had a platter but it was wrapped in paper no styrofoam box, the sides were the size of sauce containers, and the ribs were mainly sauce. The sauce was tasty wish I had more meat on the bones they gave me! My cherry coke was good they had nothing to do with that. Even the sweet potato pie was meh. So it wasnt disgusting but it wasnt worth the money & i wont go there again.

I am so in love with the Rib Crib and actually drool thinking of them. I love the photos on the wall of all the different jazz musicians and famous Philadelphians. Great stuff!

I have to say this is a great place. I've been getting ribs from here since the late 70's. Many of the folks behind the counter are still there. Great ribs, chicken and sauce. They are opened Thursday, Friday and Saturday and closed the entire month of August (which I always seem to forget). My vote for the best ribs in Philly.

There's nothing fancy about the Rib Crib. I've been buying bbq all my adult life at a number of places both in Philly and across the country - Memphis, the Carolinas, Kansas City, Texas - and last night I had to once again admit it..... when I want ribs, I want ribs from the Crib! The manager there - Mae - has been cooking the ribs there for as long as I can remember (and that's at least 30 years) consistently and, to my mind, perfectly. I'll want ribs where the meat falls off the bone sometime after all my teeth fall out. Otherwise, I want ribs that require a little chewing. Lots of meat, tender, great caramelization, flavorfull, and with a choice of mild or hot sauces that are great. I don't go to the Rib Crib for the sides. Don't get me wrong.... if they had great sides - beans, greens, mac and cheese, etc. - that'd be wonderful. But .... come on..... the ribs make me forget wanting any of those things. Plus, how can you not be amazed at a place that can survive 41 years and only need to be open 3 days a week!!!

Have been looking forward to ribs for several days so today I drove over to the rib crib and bought a half a rack. It was about 5:15 pm, Friday, June 2015. Cost about $17. I was home eating the ribs about 30 , minutes later. I didn't care for the sauce being dumped all over the ruins, spilling out when I opened the package. Should have been in a separate container. The ribs were awful. They were VERY DRY and chewing them I found that at least half of the meat was so dry I had to be certain that it was not bone that I was eating. The sauce was good but I will never eat from there again. My thought was that I was eating what was left over from the night before, so the time that you buy your ribs may make a difference. Still never again, wasn't worth the money, not a good experience. One more thing, when the woman at oven pulled my order, my half rack was in pieces and not whole. Also the woman who took my money was miserable.

Was pretty excited to have some "real" ribs but was slightly disappointed with more fat than meat on them. The greens were a bit too salty for me and the mac was tasty but didn't blow me away. The staff as great though...very friendly. Not sure if if go back though.

  • Frankie D.

The staff was friendly and the food was very good! Take out orders are two weeks in advance or something like that. will do that because I can't wait in line that long anymore but it was my first time in austin so I guess it was worth it!

My go to spot for Ribs...you know when they are open and you know they have ribs that are grilled and smoked. This week I got a 1/2 slab- bread in...mixed sauce. Meat and sauce flavor is what makes the ribs and they've been pretty consistent for the past several years. Value for your money. Collard greens and Mac and cheese was decent...glad they added hot sides... Go in, say hi, take a number, place your order, sit down and wait for your # to be called! say goodbye and leave??? Brown bag with smoked BBQ ribs in tow...

This is my go to place for ribs, their spicy sauce is perfect and in 15 years I have yet to be disappointed with the ribs. Greens are also pretty good but the meat is where its at.

So, being a southern boy, I "loves me some ribs"(it's a southern thing). Since I moved to Philly I am always looking for good ribs. I always try to hit a place twice before I add a review. So after my recent trip to "the shack" i give them 3 thumbs up. It's what we would call a "hole in the wall" but that makes it authentic for me. Let me put it this way, the ribs are awesome. Really all you need is the meat and some white bread. Crazy enough this is based on my 3rd visit, but when i showed up the 2nd time, there was a sign on the door saying, "we are all out, come see us next week". You may look at that as a bad thing, i see it as a "sign" of how good the meat is. Now, i can only give four stars because I'm not a real fan of the sides. They're okay, but that's about it. The staff is cool; i had an extremely cute baby in my arms and they seemed to be really into him. So maybe that's it. Here's the truth, grab a number, order some ribs, take them home and CHOW DOWN!!! I'll be a regular. Pork is healthy isn't it??? Yeah, go with that. Don't eat all the ribs, save me a couple of bones.

The Rib Crib on Germantown Avenue is a tightly run operation. As you enter, you are greeted by a doorman, who cautions you to watch your step. Walk up to the counter, and you are told to take a numbered ticket. Order from the small menu (pork ribs, chicken) which is posted on the wall and on the counter. Wait a few minutes for your food to be packed up, and off you go (it is take-out only). Beware that the Rib Crib is not the most welcoming place to ask a question, change your mind, or take too long when you are ordering! However, it is good food and excellent value. When I went, I ordered the half barbequed chicken for $5 (your choice of hot or mild sauce), which came with two sides (coleslaw, potato salad, or macaroni salad) and bread. The chicken was exceptionally meaty and the barbeque sauce had a pleasant tang (although it wasn't particularly spicy hot). As far as atmosphere, it is mesmerizing to watch the ribs cooking and the staff slathering on the sauce with big brushes, and the walls are lined with autographed photos of famous Rib Crib patrons. Their hours are limited, so check that they are open before you go. I can't speak for the ribs, which I didn't try during my visit. But keep the Rib Crib in mind for a cheap, quick, filling, quality $5 chicken dinner!

Been going here since I was a kid growing up in Germantown. The sauce is top notch, the meat is sometimes hit or miss, but overall Rib Crib is great comfort food. Plus it's iconic in Germantown. I do miss the famous good evening number...

Bad food & bad attitude. I had such high hopes for this place. Black-owned business, great Yelp reviews, & close by! Those hopes were dashed rather quickly by the surly counterperson (an older lady) whose demeanor was that of a prison cook. We ordered pulled pork sandwiches. It was awful. It tasted like microwaved pork chops smothered with generic BBQ sauce. I'm sure Philly has much better BBQ joints to enjoy!

I love this place, well really I love the ribs, they are addictive and very tender. I always buy a whole rack of ribs. The sides are wack but they come with the ribs, but the coleslaw is kool. Im going there today, thats a fact. Can only do it once every two weeks, too much red meat will kill the body lol. There isnt a place to sit down and eat, its a stop n go to its very definition, thats why I give it four out of five stars. The ladies are very nice once they get used to seeing you they open up and chat more with you, uf you want bangin ribs, this is thee place !!!

The sauce at the rib crib will stay with you. Someday after you first have it, you'll be reading a particularly boring passage in a book and realize that for the past 10 minutes, you've actually been thinking about the sauce at the rib crib. I had these ribs growing up, and went back again recently- it's still the same. I don't know what they put in there, but it is something special. Just don't forget to take a number.

Lord, the sauce on these ribs make me happy. I didn't even mind getting messy, they were that tasty. I tried the long ribs, short ribs and the chicken. Highly recommend the short ribs as there was more meat on the bones and it was easier to eat. But really any kind of ribs here will be dee-licious. If you're craving meat, you can do no worse than Rib Crib. I will say that the prices seemed expensive and I'd probably not want to pay if I had to pay or myself. With that said, I think it's good to support African-American and locally owned family businesses like this one. I'd skip the sides and go straight for the meat tbh. Priorities!

These are by far the best ribs in the northeast. I have been coming here since I was nine years old and even after moving away, trips to Philly were planned around whether we would be in town during open hours at the rib crib. Its a hole in the wall and possibly the best kept secret in Germantown. The staff is caring and dedicated. i have never been disappointed - except to see a rack of ribs not deemed to par thrown out. Keep it up rib crib, I want to be able to share your food with my kids one day! PS Do not go here expecting an eat-in experience. This is a grab for you and the people you love to eat with and go somewhere you love to chill with it. Great for groups but not because you can eat there - because everyone will be beyond satisfied.

My family and I have been going to the Rib Crib since I was a little kid and I hope to be able to continue going to the Rib Crib throughout the rest of my adult life...That's how good the ribs are! The BBQ ribs and the sauce are truly the best I've tasted on the East Coast, and the staff is always efficient with service and friendly (or at the very least just as friendly as you are to them!) The sides, admittedly, there's room for improvement here, especially with regards to the freshness. But they do offer more of a VARIETY now than they did years ago. Overall, the Rib Crib, its staff, and its owner(s), both past and present, are consistently the best. My only wish was that there was a Rib Crib in Washington, DC where I live...people would go crazy down here if there was!!!

Ok so the folks that work in this place are rude. I didn't expect that on my first visit and inside the city of brotherly love. ... The food was just ok, small portion and overpriced. Although I will say if I need to fulfill a rib craving - they will do.

The Rib Crib is a basically a hole in the wall little storefront in Germantown that serves southern comfort food, primarily Ribs. I was first directed to it by one of the Dining Hall Cooks at Philadelphia Univ. when I commented to him how much the BBQ Rib's they were serving sucked while I waited for him to grill me a burger. He told me to go over to the Rib Crib if I wanted good BBQ, and he was dead on. When you want great BBQ Ribs and/or Chicken, I would definitely recommend going to the Rib Crib. Quite honestly however, I didn't find any of the sides to ever be all that good. So my recommendation is, don't order anything else, just go in, get some ribs and leave. Take it home and enjoy.
