DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT host an event at Johnny Utah's. I called in to have a birthday party/fundraising event for a student film there and they completely screwed me over. I planned to have my open bar event from 9pm-12am, and the woman who I spoke on the phone with to organize it agreed on an amount to charge my guests and on an amount of money I would receive in return. This woman did not mention to me that a raffle would be going on the first hour of my event. An hour where the bar was completely overcrowded and there wasn't any music. When I went to ask the woman who organized my event why she didn't inform me of this, she replied by saying, "well it's over now." She also did not charge my guests the open bar fee that she and I had agreed upon. When I asked her why not she was once again rude and unhelpful. They overall did a terrible job.

Bouncer and bartender said sexist remarks to me and were very disrespectful I will never go back again, worst experience of my life staff did not respond to my concerns

Went in on a bar crawl and won a "free open bar!" which prompted my return since I don't leave in the city and it seemed worth a return. They are run down, the food was over priced and extremely poor quality. Service was not to standard and the quality of other patrons was not ideal. I will not be returning to Philly with this place in mind, I look forward to discovering more the city has to offer and a better place to bring my friends, spend my money, and have a good time.

I just would like to let everyone know that this place Johnny Utah's over charged my card 100.00. Thank god I had the receipt that showed I paid 37.50 and when I looked at my bank statement it showed 137.50. I tried to call them Friday and Saturday left 3-4 messages and not a phone call back! I tried again Monday I spoke with someone they told me the manager would be there shortly and give me a call well needless to say still no phone call! So to anyone that has been there I would check your bank statement because they are definitely trying to pull a fast one on people, and to the people that are think about going there use cash!

I prefer mcfaddens because I'm not really into "southern" decors, but the mechanical bull in here is pretty cool. They also share a cover with mcfaddens, so you get two cool bars for a fair cover price!

By far the worst bar I have been too in Philly. Went there for New Years Eve because it was the cheapest deal, biggest mistake ever. The over packed the place way too much no one could dance, let alone move. It has to be illegal or ignoring any fire codes. Between this and its sister bar next door, McFadden's. It manages to find the biggest D-bags in the country. Likewise, they let girls get on tables and bars to dance while you struggle to get a half-sized drink. Do yourself a favor and pass on this awful establishment.

I got a group together to watch a football game on Sunday. I called ahead to make sure they had Sunday ticket and could accommodate my group. They said yes, but when we showed up the bar was empty and they said they couldn't change the channel from the Giants game that no one was watching.

    (1)
  • Kurt C.

Very rude staff. Unprofessional manager. My friends and I were offended by the lack of respect and we will never be stepping foot in this establishment again. I would suggest to bring your business elsewhere.

Do yourself a favor and skip this place. I came here for my girlfriends birthday, (it was 11:30pm, her birthday was at midnight) and she went to the door with her ID and he told her it wasn't her. It WAS in fact her and her ID. The arrogant jerk then goes "I've been doing this for 30 years, this definitely is not you" and took her real ID away. Um obviously your "30 years experience" is bologna if you're silly enough to take away someones real ID. So my girlfriend spent her birthday in a Jimmy Johns trying to figure out what to do about her ID. I went in briefly for one drink (before all the drama went down) and the place was too packed, crawling with meathead bartenders who didn't seem to know what they were talking about.

    (2)
  • Jane M.

Rude bartenders!! If I could give less then one star i would! She pointed at us and stared so we'd give her the drink order get a clue!

  • Gandhus M.

The plan was to grab a bite here just to check it out, then head elsewhere. We stuck around and got drunk instead, here's why: They have a troupe of attractive female bartenders who periodically dance on the bar. Yeah that's a lame reason for staying anywhere, I know. We weren't aware of this phenomenon and the whole thing sort of took us by surprise. We'd just be hanging out and then it was like, "Oh, they're going to do it again." Call it shallow, sexist or whatever but they were mildly amusing. Plus, the drinks were flowing and we had no place else to be. The bar is a big square, with ample room around it. They have a cowboy western thing going on. The rear of the place is mostly taken up by a mechanical bull ring, with lots of room around that as well. A few booths are along one wall. They play country music with some 80's hair band/pop thrown in. If you're like me and would never actually ride one of these things, mechanical bulls really only have three types of appeal: watching people fall off, watching hot chick(s) ride them "provocatively" and to watch the bull operator fuck with people. Again, any of those are only mildly amusing at best. I could go on, but it's not important. I'll simply say this is a one and done kind of place for me. If you're over twenty-five, you really have no business coming here. In hindsight, it baffles me that I went here at all. Oh, I had the burger....if you do go, I'd pass on the food.

i actually had a great time here! I went last night with a friend that had a happy hour, although they could not find documentation of the happy hour and the bouncer got a little snippy with us the manager was wonderful! He helped us out wonderfully and even got the girl with the happy hour a free shot for the trouble! bar tenders were wonderful and very nice, drink specials with the happy hour made my drinks 3 a piece. Spending 15 to drink at a bar in philly for four hours is always a great night in my books! ill be back

  • Nathan G.

Just came back from a terrible experience at this bar. Excruciatingly slow bar service, meathead bouncers losing their tempers in front of the entire place, a terrible DJ (who played a total of 3 country songs before resorting to the old standbys of "Shots" and "In The Club". Seriously, dude, if you're gonna abandon country music at least pick some songs that are popular now... Anyway, this is just a terrible excuse for a bar, and there wasn't even any room to dance because they stuffed the place with people and had a huge mechanical bull in the middle of the room. Skip it and go to a respectable establishment like Silk City, which is right down the street. At least there you won't have to order your undersized drinks through a girl's legs.

Love this place! Get to listen to country all night and dance around! reminder people this is a COLLEGE bar! So for all of you who think it's too loud and "not classy" hate to break it to you but I'm betting you weren't too classy in college either! Haha just kidding but in all seriousness, come here if your looking to feel young and carefree.. Even if it is just for the night!

The most sexist bar I've ever been to. First of all, let me tell you all about the mechanical bull. If a girl gets on, they make the bull go extra slow, just look at the girl's rack to figure out how long she'll be on the bull. The stupid bull takes up most of the middle of the floor, and is just plain embarrassing to watch girls try to be "sexy" on... Did I mention the place was sexist? The bartenders wear short shorts and cowboy boots, and do an out-of-sync dance to some Poison songs for far too long for anyone to stand. Another humiliating sight. You can get up on the tables and dance, but only if you're a girl. Who wants to put their drinks and food down on tables that skanks have been dancing all over? The place is also overly crowded, and I have no idea why. I think people only come there to walk around in the crowd, because that was literally all that people were doing around me. Barely anyone was dancing because the DJ sucked so hard. Seriously, I've never been to a dance bar that had this little recognizable and undanceable music. I had to dance to whatever to make the most of it. Also, I witnessed at least two fights that went down that had to be handled by security. This place is the worst.

The NYC location is great but....I received some of the worst customer service I have in my life from the testosterone driven genral manage at the philly location. I am legally blind and am forced to wear dark glasses due to a rare eye disorder. The GM began interagating me for my glasses and continued to bully me and force out the door. Absolute discrimation! I will not t be recommending this bar to anyone or visiting any other domestic locations in the future.

Can I give half a star for the mechanical bull that throws people off at mach 10 speed? Otherwise absolutely horrendous. First and last time. The bartender served everyone around me for at least 10 mins after I first arrived with cash in hand almost throwing it at her. BLATANTLY ignored. Unbelievable. People came and left as I stood there glaring at her even though my group had the "open bar" (shots not included). The only places to stand are walkways where people keep bumping into and pushing into you to get by. Think McFadden's on a Friday night full of 21 year olds with a "country" theme. I'll stick to my local bars. I hope no one hosts an event here again anytime soon. Please just shut it down. Disgrace to Philadelphia.

Great food, great specialty drinks, great bartenders, cowgirls that dance, sexy cowboys.. the mechanical bull is insane and fun to watch. the dancing atmosphere is fun enough to dance on top of the seats and table tops. all you can eat popcorn and peanuts. great establishment to have fun, drink, eat, dance and relax.

I was there for the first time this weekend for a friend's birthday, it was also my last time. The drinks are cheap, but the thought of paying a cover to get into this place actually makes me nauseous. We waited a ridiculous amount of time for drinks, probably because all the female bartenders are too busy dancing on the bar rather than actually making drinks. The music is all over the place, if they're going to claim to be an authentic country bar, then why are they playing 50 cent? The coolest part about this bar was the mechanical bull, however even that it ruined by the incredibly sexist, rude, and incompetent staff. The operator is gentle with the prettier girls so they stay on longer, but is sure to throw anyone else off before they barely even have a chance to get on the thing. Also, if you and your friend are pretty enough, you can ride together, being pestered by the operator to make-out the entire time. However, if you're not at least a 9, you can forget it. This bar is everything a bar shouldn't be. Their business modal is simple, they objectify woman to please the men, who then buy more drinks. It has nothing to do with actually having a good time. If you're considering trying this place, AVOID IT. Try Lucy's or 700 club instead.

    (1)
  • Nick B.

pros: cheap drinks...although I was visiting from NYC so I was probably going to think drinks were cheap wherever I went in Philly cons: way too crowded with nothing but unattractive people for the most part, and the staff was extremely rude, unprofessional, and incompetent conclusion: I've only been once, and I probably won't be going again if I visit the area, plus the $5 cover, while not that big of a deal, was certainly not worth it...also, the bartender TRIPLE charged my tab at the end of the night, presumably because I didn't tip her well (which she deserved for being a shitty bartender and getting my drink order wrong 2 out of the 3 times I went up) following up with regards to the triple charge on my card, it seems like no one works here or answers their phone line, because I have called upwards of 20 times in the last four days and haven't gotten an answer or a call back yet, and then the phone number on my original receipt seems to be completely unrelated to the establishment and someone's personal line

This place is probably one of the worst bars in the city for a number of reasons. 1. They over pack the place so that you can't move (I'm pretty sure they completely ignore any kind of fire codes or laws). 2. The bartenders are awful. They have no system to how they serve their customers, and when they do get around to you, they are rude and careless with orders. It took about 30 minutes to get to the bar and order a drink. 3. If you can make it to the bar through the crowd and gain the attention of a bartender, you still have to talk through girl's legs (they let people dance on the bar). Assuming you get to order, you then have to maneuver your drink through legs and ankles and heels, trying not to spill the $10 drink you just ordered. 4. They give away open bars because their business is so bad. They have a hard time getting people to come back it seems, because I "win" a free open bar every other week, and each time I tell them no because their service is terrible! As much as I hate saying no to free booze, this place isn't worth it!

I was disappointed with this place. First off, they offer several open bar options for several hours at several different price points which is all fine and good; however, I specifically asked at the door what the open bar package I chose included. I was told, "mixed bottom shelf well drinks, no shots". Ok cool! That's fine with me I thought. So off I go to the bar to order my first drink of the night: a Long Island Ice Tea. Nope! I can't have that I was told because it wasn't part of the open bar deal. I've worked at a bar for the past 3 years and have had training as a bartender, and unless otherwise specified, a Long Island is made with bottom shelf liquors and would be considered a "well" drink. After speaking with who I suppose was the manager, I was basically told you could only select ONE liquor per drink. Well, that was completely the opposite of what I was told at the door. If I knew that was the case, I would have passed on the open bar deal and paid for what I actually wanted. I ended up drinking rum and Coke all night. Other than being deceived about what was actually included in the open bar package, I would say I had an average time. It's a decent sized bar, and the bar tenders that night were good overall. The longest I had to wait for a drink was maybe 10 minutes tops. Not bad. Other than having a mechanical bull, I would say this place would not earn a passing grade as a country themed bar. There was little to no country music and the DJ was not great. Overall, there are FAR better options for bars and clubs in the area, so do yourself a favor and pass on this place.

Saying that this place is Philly's only authentic country bar is like saying the Olive Garden serves real Italian food. They didn't even play country half the damn time!!!!! What the hell kind of country bar blasts Pitbull????? The kitchen closed at 9, the waitresses were wayyy to busy to take our drink orders. All in all this place sucks. The mechanical bull was the only redeeming quality and it wasn't that interesting. Save your $5 and go somewhere else. I had a better experience at Texas Roadhouse sans mechanical bull.

  • Sarah G.

This bar is exactly what you think it is. A good old fashioned, country western type bar where girls dance on the bar and drinks are over priced. Plus, there's a full size bull that all the drunk people ride and it's hilarious! Another fun fact is that women are allowed to dance on literally anything that they can stand on, tables, chairs, the bar, anything that will hold them. Men however, can only dance on the floor. If you're going with a group, reserving a booth is a MUST. My experience here was a good one, specifically because I was with a group and we reserved a booth for our friends birthday. So we had a place to sit down, dance, and keep all of our belongings relatively safe. The only way I'd go back is if we reserved a booth again. The bartenders are OK and the drinks are somewhat weak, but the ladies who dance around and sell jello shots are very nice. Overall I'd give it a 3.5/4 because I'll probably end up going back, but I will definitely drink beforehand.

***RACIST ACT*** Wow... the excitement we entered with quickly changed for the worst... My cousins Best friends decided to do something different yet exciting and interactive for her and her guest to enjoy on a Saturday night, so she reserve a table ahead of time for a intimate party group of 8. A few of us showed up in pairs at a time a little b4 10pm not knowing there is no food service after 10pm, So yes the 3ppl that showed up at 930 ate and the rest of us didn't get eat and we were told by the waitress that this policy (which is fine however I advised her to let whom ever books parties/table to make the customers aware of this policy) the wake in the lines for drinks we're ridiculous, the wait to ride the mechanical bull was even worst. Our 3hrs here for the night was spent on standing in line for the bull(which we know now was BULLSHIT) the asshole(guy) who was in control of the bull for this night which was the 5th of October was letting his personal friends and select girls cut us in line THE WHOLE NIGHT, the sissy boy who was to keep the line in order only did what the asshole guy told him (even though it was wrong and rude) As it was near time for our group who's been waiting to ride the bull now for almost 2hrs things changed drastically... The bull control i mean asshole gets up from his station to go have a drink at the bar, speak and hang out with a group of "his buddies" while our birthday waits for him to return he starts the ride and immediately knocks her off, same with the other 4ppl got on the bull- 2 of the 5ppl with our party left this night with bruised legs and feet, as i mentioned we stood in line for over an hour and watched this asshole coach 1st timers on how to ride the bull, let his friends cut the line, and even let his friends ride back to back as we watched patiently for our turns. I couldn't believe what was happening I asked to speak with manager that's on sight at this time and the 3 employees at the time act as if they didn't understand who or what I was asking as if they we're hard of hearing, drunk and/or high. I went outside to cool down from the rage and loud atmosphere an as I sat in the front of this building angry frustrated and disappointed for the way we were treated I was joined by the rest of our party and finally this terrible night out was OVER! ***RACIST ACT***

Disgusting place not worth the time to visit. I've been to other places with mechanical bulls and was expecting the same- a good time with some fun entertainment. The bull operator is a sick human being who has perfected the art of getting girls to fall forward with their backsides hanging out and then shakes the bull so that the audience gets a full view of her private area and the girl runs off the bull embarrassed. The operator would keep the prettier girls on for longer, moving them slowly and the less pretty girls would get thrown off right away. It's clear the guy was getting off on this and it was pathetic and disgusting to watch. There are so many cool bars in Philly. This is not one of them.

First off, country bar?? Not at all. It was my first and last time going here. Being into country music ,I was a a bit excited to check this place out. Only to find the music they played was everything but. 25 minutes to get a drink and while in the process I had 2 mixed drinks from two different people split on me. If your into the whole 'push and shove with creeps' this would be 5star.

Walked into this place with three friends. They told three of us to go ahead but made one friend pay a cover. I was DD so I asked for a water...the bartender looked at me and said, "Already?" while rolling his eyes. Walked down this ramp where two girls were sitting on a counter who talked to me. As I respond I get bombarded like I just stole something and getting pushed down the ramp as they tell me "You can't stand on the ramp and block it!" A friend of mine came over and was talking so he decided since he couldn't stand on the ramp he'd sit on the counter to talk. They did not like this much and immediately threw him down. He said he just wanted to sit there and talk...the man responded, "I don't care...I am the owner...Eff you!" Will not be going back...

Having never been here before I booked this place for my sister's bachelorette party. As we pulled up I almost puked in my mouth when I realized it used to be Tiki Bob's! Our package was $35/person from 9 til midnight and included a bottle of champagne. Decent spot for booze and debauchery when you don't want to keep it classy. Threw the bartender $10 in the beginning of the night which proved to be the best $10 I've spent in a while. Can't say the crowd was much to look at and some of the girls that work here need to lay off the drugs. But you can dance on the tables and I found the mechanical bull to be very entertaining. Must say I'm a little pissed that the girls didn't dance on the bar during our visit, who doesn't love those hot shorts?!?!

Such a fun time. The only place I know where you can ride a mechanical bull! Although, the operators get pervy when girls in dresses ride... beware what you wear ladies! The drinks are creative and delicious although slightly overpriced. The atmosphere is crazy and fun, and the bartenders dance on the counter coyote ugly style! Fun to watch and even join in on! although this slows down the already snail paced drink service.... I came here once with a voucher for a free birthday drink... by the time I got to the head of the line an hour later it had expired... I had to speak to three different people and a rude manager to finally have my free drink begrudingly served to me... It wasn't my fault, I was there in plenty of time... If the 4 female bartenders weren't dancing on the counters with guests the whole time, while one make bartender took over the insanely crowded bar.I would have gotten it sooner... on the other hand, the counter may be the only open space to dance... it sure is crowded! Be sure to get here early. To get drinks and a spot to dance!

I came here only for a Penn senior event, and am pretty sure I would never come here on a normal day...firstly, it is very isolated from everything else, so it's a complete hassle to get here. The space is spacious enough, but cowboy-themed bar with scantily-clad girls in 10 degree weather with nothing but riding boots and daisy dukes? Methinks not. I ordered a $10 mason jar drink, and it was probably one of the worst drinks I have ever had; it was supposed to be one of the bar's specials, but it tasted like ice and powder, which stuck in my throat and had a weird aftertaste. Most of all, very low alcoholic content! Strongly disappointing, I left after 10 minutes. It was slightly amusing watching people ride the mechanical bull...but this just isn't really my cup of tea, especially with so many other cool bars in NoLibs/even Old City.

Super racist bartender and believe me I am never the one to jump to race conclusions. This is not my first time but they always go off of the two bars, one cover thing, as the huge sign in the window said. Well last night, the walkway between was blocked so we were stuck in this shit hole. Mcfaddens is always more fun, by the way. Apparently they have a no hats rule. So my friend was told in a very disrespectful way to remove his hat or he would be kicked out. An hour later on the other side of the bar, two guys have on hats. When we ask the bartender about it he says they work here. I told him if it's a policy. Then everyone needs to follow it. They continued to wear their hats. Then the other bartender spills a drink on my Kate spade purse and mumbles sorry before going about her way.

This bar is not the type of establishment I would go to, and that is for good reason with my three strikes rule. I hate the idea of paying a cover just to walk in to drink, so that is one strike. The place is littered with bros and bimbos who watch too much MTV reality TV, so that is a second strike. I also find it sacrilege that they served Sarnac Pumpkin Ale in a plastic cup and that is the biggest third strike to me! It is nice that High Lifes are 2.00 bucks, but I can go to a chill dive bar for that. I doubt I will want to come back to this juvenile bar.

An extra star for the mechanical bull, because it's fun to watch your friends ride it. It's also fun to try, unless you're not wearing a low-cut top and pants that show your butt crack and don't feel like parading around your grinding skills in front of a crowded bar. Are mechanical bulls supposed to be sexual? This place is basically a feminist's worst nightmare. The guy who operates the bull takes it easy on the "hot" chicks so they can stay on for longer, and they let those girls ahead in line. Dudes and girls who maybe don't fit whatever aesthetic they're looking for (or girls who opt to ride solo, rather than straddling each other) get bucked off pretty fast. Bouncer was an asshole, bartenders weren't great, and my enjoyment of the place was diminished by the girls in skimpy outfits dancing on the bar. There are probably people who enjoy places like this. I'm not one of them, and I'm OK with that.

This is single handily the worst bar I have ever been to in my entire life. The customer service at this establishment is abysmal (manager probably doesn't even know what that word means because he is that uneducated). The manager assaulted my girlfriend, verbally degrading her - calling her a "white c*nt". I would never go here and highly recommend Johnny Utah corporate to fire the general manager.

This was by far the worst experience I've ever had at a bar. I came in with low expectations, but the experience managed to be worse than this. The general manager was a terrible rude and sexist person with his bouncing staff showing off similar qualities. They will do anything to give the bar a "sexy look", but anything besides for that will cause you to be asked to stop of leave. It felt much skankyier than sexy. The DJ played outdated and boring songs, with only three of them being in the country genre all night. I was excited for a country atmosphere, but didn't find that here. The bull operator was constantly hitting on the women that wanted to ride the bull. Anyone he didn't like was given a brutally hard and fast ride, while people he did like or that we're wearing revealing clothes had the bull slowed down. Attractive people on a bull is great, and I love to see it, but this man prevented an overweight girl from getting on the bull by every time she tried to hop on, he's buck the bull and throw her to the ground before ever starting. It was embarrassing and downright disgusting how poorly she was treated in front of the whole bar. She ended up not riding the bull because the operator wouldn't give her a chance to get on. Drink service was terribly slow. Honestly, this was the worst bar experience I've ever had. Once in a while, I'm all for hitting up that questionable location just because it might be fun, and usually it can be, but with such rude, sexist and inconsiderate staff at Jonny Utah's, this place will never be a good decision, no matter how low your standards are. The option for negative stars isn't on here, but trust me, that's what I would otherwise be choosing.
