There is a reason why this place is empty on a Sunday during prime brunch time. My husband and I came here after seeing @EastPassyunkAvenue post an image of a griddle full of pancakes from Dante on Instagram. As one of the newer spots in our hood (and a die hard pancake fan) it felt like a sign (or at least that's what my stomach told me) so we decided to give it a shot. When we walked inside the ladies behind the bar were pleasant enough and instructed us to sit wherever we'd like. We were a little surprised it was so empty but were relieved to not have a 45 minute wait like some of the other local spots so we took a seat at a high-top table. After 2-3 minutes were brought some "menus". Ugh. Upon being handed them I regretted sitting down. It still baffles me that a restaurant that has any desire to be successful or appear professional would hand you the type of menu we were given. Three pieces of nasty white card stock stapled along the side--dirty from a dozen other people using it before me. Obviously made on Microsoft Word (without spell check enabled), I couldn't help but grunt at the "Papyrus" typeface littering each page. Stuffed inside was an equally ghastly "restaurant week menu" that someone scribbled the price and dates on with a (dying) brown crayola marker. How unappetizing. Design flaws aside--the biggest error was the fact that this "espresso bar" had NO DRINK MENU. Yup! No where on these three pages were any drinks whatsoever. I figure the server must have forgotten to give it to us...so I ask. Her response was "up there" as she points to a chalk board with half a dozen "special" drinks scribbled on the wall--not a dollar sign to be seen. She then proceeds to tell me she has some juice...but she's not sure what kind...and some teas...and coffee and stuff. Then she says "if you tell me what you want I can see if we have it". WTF?! How about a list of what you offer with prices next to it? I mean this is a restaurant, right? Right??? I decided to take the safe choice--coffee. I am not that picky when it comes to coffee and take mine with 1-2 sugars (in the raw preferred) with a bit of half and half. I figured it must be half decent since they are an "espresso bar", but alas, disappointment again. The worst is that it was served with those gross individual "shelf stable" half and halfs. I asked for fresh and the girl thought I was crazy. Oof. I could have forgiven all of this had the food menu provided something to look forward to. Everything on the menu was $10+. I ordered the pancakes (for $10) described as being served with "mixed berries or fruit". I wasn't given an option--but I sort of looked forward to the gamble. Husband ordered a BLT sandwich. $11. Annnnnnnd here's where this review went from 3 stars to 1. It took 25 minutes for my plate of 3 thin, measly pancakes drenched in powdered sugar to come out with a mere 2.5 strawberries cut up on top. Perhaps this wouldn't have been so bad...but apparently my husband wasn't allowed to eat with me--because my food was the only plate brought out. ............at least 7...maybe more minutes later his BLT arrives. In case anyone was unsure--a BLT is typically BACON, LETTUCE, and TOMATO on TOAST (aka rocket science). This one, thankfully for the $11 price tag, included Avocado and a Fried Egg. All I can say is--what a mess. For my husband to be angered by food is pretty much near impossible. But I honestly thought his head was going to explode. The toast was some type of dry grain bread that was over toasted--almost burnt. The lettuce was soaking wet romaine that pieces of it were wilted and black that he had to remove but the soggy damage had already been done. The egg had no seasoning whatsoever and was leaking everywhere. There was ONE PIECE OF BACON cut in half on either side of the sandwich. There couldn't have been more than 1/4 of an avocado between the two halves of the sandwich and a mealy tomato topped it all off. My pancakes were really unappetizing but I would have eaten rocks at that point we were so hungry. The waitress didn't apologize or ever come back to ask how anything was. I suppose because she knew it was terrible. A man--perceptively the owner--came by at one point and mumbled something about the bread from the aforementioned BLT falling on the floor prior to bringing it out. I couldn't help but laugh thinking about how this man thought this information would make things better. We ate as quickly as we could, then left. At the end of the day, the bill was $23.00 for a lesson well learned. Sorry Dante but we will not be back.

This is a quite alternative to green eggs cafe. but also CASH ONLY. The food is fabulous and the coffee is good. The staff is very laid back which can be a bit awkward if you are looking for a structured dining experience. I took away a star because their home fries went from being delicious broiled red potatoes to I think frozen deep fried chunks. Probably due to the lower customer volume the place gets. everything else is cooked to perfection. my boyfriend got eggs Benedict with one of the best hollandaise sauce I've had recently

My boyfriend and I are big brunch junkies and I should have known when we walked into this place and there were very few patrons inside during prime brunch hours on a Saturday that something might be up. The "fresh squeezed" OJ tasted off to me. Either it wasn't fresh squeezed or it was squeezed with bad oranges. My omelette plate came with wheat toast instead of rye and it was cold and felt like cardboard. Omelette and potatoes were good, though. I just wasn't impressed, and unless they get their act together, I don't see it staying open long. On the plus side, the service was really good.

I had read mixed reviews but this place was a winner to me. The omelette was perfect, the eggs benedict standard but tasty. Why is it so hard to make perfect home fries? It is very rare that you find perfectly crispy outside, soft potatoes on the inside...these however were perfection. The coffee was tasty and strong and the holiday specialty coffees were great (sampled the smores latte.) The service was very friendly although a bit slow considering the number of patrons. Either way, a good spot brunch spot with varied menu at reasonable prices. Come prepared...cash only.

Stopped in here for a quick bite. I was excited, too, since it looked liek a cute addition to the 'hood. Several people were standing around, apparently discussing the menu. No one paid attention to me and I got the sense I was intruding. Don't open the door if you're not open for business. I had to ask if I should sit, then where I could sit, then if I should take a menu, then if I had to order at the bar. Each time met with annoyed responses. The bartender was sent to take care of me and he was very nice but it was just an uncomfortable feeling all around. I ordered an asparagus and cheddar omelette and an iced coffee. The omelette was $9 and the coffee was $3. Meh. The omelette consisted of a flat egg pancake folded in half with tiny pieces of asparagus placed inside and then 1.5 slices of cheddar placed and lightly melted across the top. The potatoes were really good in flavor but very greasy. Actually, everything was very greasy. The rye toast was excellent, though. So, I will pass on this place in the future. There are way better and friendly cafes right around the corner.

This place is all old school South Philly love. Down to earth, friendly and just a little rough around the edges. On this my first visit, I with the classic Italian Tuna sandwich, served on ciabatta with a generous helping of crisp, fresh cut fries. The tuna was juicy, plentiful and downright delicious. The perfect little bit of comfort food for any day of the week. -SZ

Loved the food. The first night I tried, it was mostly just my table and I think the restaurant had only opened for a month or two. I went back a few more times. The quality of the food again was great. I had the sandwich with the broccoli rabe. It was so tasty! I really like the coffee as well. I do want to comment on the portion of the food though. Some of them should be adjusted. For instance, the sandwich was $9 that included the sandwich and fries. That's 2 meals for me. The mac and cheese was $5, but the portion was tiny and not quite all that filling. I understand that it was a side, but the cost and the portions just don't match. One last thing to comment on. The service could be picked up a bit. A bit slow and it seemed as if the waiter/waitresses didn't seem to know what they were doing. I mostly would go back for the food because it tastes great.

A friend and I ate here yesterday for brunch. The overall experience was ehhh, just ok. We both had the shrimp and grits. If you love grits, you'll love this dish. That's probably because 95% of the dish was grits, topped with three small shrimp, and what I would say was a sprinkle of sausage. It was still good. Dislikes: The amount of flies circling our inside table (all the doors and windows were closed in the front) made it impossible to actually enjoy the food. When we mentioned it to the waiter, who was very nice by the way, he said they were aware of the problem and that it was due to the neighbors putting their trash out early. My friend asked if they had any doors or windows open and he said no. Because of where we were seated, however, you could clearly see that the back door was open. It was also strange how so many of the employees were standing in the middle of the dining room (beside tables) having personal conversations and playing on their cell phones. Lastly, in the top dining area, next to the kitchen (where we were seated), the floors and bottoms of the walls look as though they need a good scrub down.

Popped in here for East Passyunk Restaurant Week with my work peeps, saw the everyday menu and decided to go that route instead. I went with the Cap'n Crunch French Toast and was very satisfied with my choice. It comes with 2 1/2 pieces of French toast, a few slices strawberries and is bordered by whipped cream. It was really good. Most places go a little crazy with their French toast, what with the thick Challah slices and all of the toppings. These were very tame and manageable. Had a great homemade feeling to them and I'll definitely be back for more. Prices are great for brunch too. $44 to feed three adult males is somewhat of a bargain these days. I'll certainly be back to Dante, plus I heard they hook up with Vanilya for desserts sometimes. And I'm a sucker for those Vanilya cookies!

2 Creme Brulee lattes and one christmas candy cane latte to go. Very good and satisfying. Family run and the vibe is good. Owners took time to tell us about the 7 month old business while our drinks were being made. Unable to dine in but the dishes we saw looked delicious. Plan on a return visit and updated review in January.

Tried Danté for Brunch today and had a sub-par experience with this relatively new addition to East Passyunk Ave. The space is clean and well maintained. I didn't care for the large murals of (what I can only assume is) Italy on many of the walls, but that is a mater of taste. The front area is set up with a bar for quick eats and coffee. The back room is laid out with tables - very similar in format I many other local eating establishments of this size. Out beverage service was pretty quick though the latte came out lukewarm. They offered to bring a second one and it was also lukewarm, though a little bit warmer than the first. The plain coffee was la Colombe and tasted good and was a reasonable temperature. We had been seated for nearly 40 minutes by the time we actually got our order taken. The food took another 35 minutes to arrive. The good wasn't that bad. I had eggs Benedict and aside from a perceived lack of hollandaise sauce, it was tasty. The potatoes seemed a tad under cooked inside but were a crispy golden town on the outside. My friend had 2 eggs with veggies substituted for meat. No complaints. We were notified that it was cash only when we went to pay, even though the bill folio said AmEx on the front. Not a huge deal since they had an ATM but could have been better advertised as most sit down places take some form of electronic payment these days. SUMMARY Food was average. This is a new entry Ina neighborhood with a high reputation for good food, so average isn't really a compliment. Service was lacking - Food and beverage delivery was spotty, issues with the bill, etc. This is my reason for not giving three stars. If the food had been really good it would have made up for the service. This place has a fair amour of potential, but would benefit from more experienced management for the front of the house.

I've eaten here about a half dozen times for breakfast and lunch and always have a great meal. Usually not too crowded, just enough diners to be comfortable, unlike a lot of small places that get packed and really noisy. Best burger on the ave which you wouldn't really think so since an espresso cafe. Staff is very friendly, and service is great. Last visit, I ordered a BLT with avocado, but the owner said the shipment wasn't fresh so he took 10% off the bill which I thought was really considerate.

Dante is a new espresso bar and cafe on east Passyunk! Grand opening was yesterday April 5! By far the best food I ever had !!!! Excellent cappuccino too! The owner and his wife and super friendly along with the rest of the staff :-)

The food was good with the one complaint that the Crunchy French Toast had no cornflakes on it at alll! The chicken and waffles is the same quality of Green Eggs (love that place!) But even after being open for several weeks, the service continues to be terrible. The hostess, whom I'm sure is a sweet person is terribly shy and isn't terribly welcoming. The rest staff seems inexperienced as they are slow, inattentive, and do not follow standard dining customs. For example, the will not willing refill coffee or water. They will not clear plates or bring the check unless they are flagged down and explicitly asked. I hope the service changes as the food is worthy of Passyunk's brunch scene.

I also had their lemon ricotta pancakes. Delicious. Food is reasonably priced. The atmosphere and the decor blends well with East Passyunk Av. A wonderful new addition to East Passyunk. Great food at a reasonable price. Dante blends the coziness of a true neighborhood hangout spot with class and sophistication, minus pretense. The staff here is warm, familial and amiable, very engaging in creating a unique and meaningful experience for me whenever I stop in. I find that to be a most wonderful change after years and years of impersonal overpriced hipster cafe "snobbery and robbery" in San Francisco---so yay for Dante, yay for Philadelphia!

I've been to this new Cafe every day since it opened a few weeks ago. The food is eclectic, delicious and presentation is total food art. Thankfully, the chef doesn't drowned your food in sauces; I'm able to order extra on the side for my daughter who is a "dipper". The staff is so sweet, and personable- by the time you leave, you feel like you're part of the family. Coffees and lattes come out just like I like them....piping hot. Dante' you were the missing funky coffee shop, lunch and light dinner spot the Avenue needed. I'm a solid new customer!! Congrats and best wishes.

We walked over to Dantes for Saturday breakfast only to find the door open and someone on the phone looking for the owner. It was supposed to be open at 8 and it was 8:25. He asked us to wait ten minutes and someone should be there . No thank you my time is valuable. One and done. Went to Chaya and enjoying a delicious breakfast. They were open and waiting to serve

Looking at this place as i walked in, i didn't expect much. Well, let me tell u....my socks were officially blown off. Food does not reflect the simple cafe feel. The food is simple but magnificent. Best chicken and waffles (brunch menu) I've had yet. The waffle's crispy to spongy ratio was perfect. The flavor was classically familiar. The sirachi sauce on the side was a interesting pairing to dip my buttermilk fried chicken into. My bf's chicken cutlet was awesome, according to him and the prosciutto de parma was one of the most exceptional to date, he claims. I got an Italian tuna fish for the road. Far from home but of u find urself in this area be sure to check this little treasure out. Yumz

Whenever I am in the neighborhood I make sure to stop in! There is a wonderful light, airy feel about the place which helps temporarily take you away from the city and escape. Adding to the amazing atmosphere is the extremely friendly and helpful staff. An excellent espresso combined with pleasant people in an effortless atmosphere makes for a perfect lunch getaway! Can't wait to try out the food!

It was the second time my husband and I visited Dantè's Cafe.I had the best French toast I have ever eaten. My husband had an omelet with broccoli rabe and provolone. Went for brunch today. We were seated and given water quickly, and that was the last thing that was done with any sort of speed. Ordered a latte that came room temperature, they replaced it no problem but the second wasn't hot either (though better than the first). Probably another 20 mins later our food order was taken. The food took a while to come out and was good, but nothing you can't get somewhere else. I ran into friends that were also there, and their grits were so overcooked they stuck together in a ball, and the bacon was overcooked as well. I know this place is new, but they need to get it together. They should hire an actual chef and a barista if they want to compete in this neighborhood. Giving them 3 stars as the staff was super nice, but the food and speed of service was just average.

He said it was on par with the version at the four seasons. This wonderful cafe has me thinking of moving from Princeton. This place is AWESOME!!!!
