Eating here was quite the experience. The whole meal was delicious, but my shoutout goes to the filet mignon. That was some of the best cooked steak I've ever eaten. We were there for restaurant week, which made it affordable to this poor grad student. The wait staff was polite and informed. The music was relaxing and jazzy. The seats were comfortable, and the place made me feel like I was dining in the 1940's. Awesome experience.

Amazing burgers at lunch for only $10.00. Service is typical Stephen Starr quality which means consistent and very good. We have been there once for dinner and it was equally as good as lunch. Nice atmosphere for a great night out. Drinks are pricey but food worth the trip.

Thank you for ruining my bday dinner! Lets start with service. We were seated in the worst spot ever. I got to watch the servers stand around and bull* and I stared at the kitchen. My boyfriend had to sit where they put the menus. Really weird spot for them. We sat down and waited for someone to come and bring us menus. Finally 15 mins later a women disheveled came over and asked us what we wanted a drink. I ask for champagne she hands me a full book falling all over the place with 3 options of champagne. I ask her the difference of them and she looks at me blink. Then finally answers which one is dry and which one is sweet. She then leaves. 10 mins later a boy walks over and starts explaining the menu. He doesnt ask if we have questions. I kinda had to stop him. So I ask how things are cooked so I knew how to order. He said that they cook things medium. Okay that is perfect. He goes I will give you a minute. 15 mins later the women comes out to take our order. I am beyond annoyed at this point!! The reason he walked by us 3 times and never came back. I even had my menu down to be like umm hello we are ready. I got my salad and my boyfriend got his and they were really good. I stopped eating bc I wanted to enjoy my meal so I ate half. They both walked by without asking me if I was done my boyfriend finished his and we stared at our plates for literally 15 mins and then our dinner came out and not by either one of them. So I now have my salad and dinner on a small table. Finally she comes over how was it? I wanted to be mean But held my tongue and asked her to wrap it up. We both got steaks. Our knifes would not cut the steak and they were literally raw! I like steaks on the less cooked side but this was so gross. I dropped my knife and I had to share my boyfriends bc I couldnt get the attention of them to get another one. I am so upset at this point she comes over with dessert menus. I dismiss her and ask for the bill. She comes over right away with that!! Then after with a plate and a little scoop of ice cream and said I know it is your bday so here you go. I literally wanted to say wait you knew this the whole time and you treated us like crap?!? Here my boyfriend called a head of time to make sure there would something for me after dinner. They both catered to they other tables and just forgot about us. Literally the guy never came back again. Still waiting for him to take our dinner order. I was so disappointed with our $60 steaks I gave them to homeless people. By the way the night before I ate at a pizza place and had the service ever! Should have went there, better food and service.

I love this place. The decor reminds me of a scene from a 60's movie or show like "Mad Men". It must be said that this was the best lamb or should I say mutton chop I've ever had in my life. Honestly, it was so good I went back 2x in one week, which is saying a lot considering the pricey menu. Besides the lobster mac & cheese, the rest of the meal was just ok...nothing to really rave about. I was very unimpressed with the limited cocktail menu, as well as my drink. The staff was great and very accommodating on both visits. The first visit I requested a particular booth that was unavailable but was given something very comparable. However, when I showed up the next evening, the hostess remembered me and gave me the booth I had originally requested (right in front of the dog mural). Pictures I've seen of the Baked Alaska had my mouth watering before I even got there; but I'm sad to say it was just ok. It was tasty but just not what I had imagined. I would definitely dine here again & recommend this restaurant for special occasions!!

Butcher salad was every vegetable your heart can desire with a light vinaigrette dressing. Perfect ambiance with the jazz music in the background. The veal chop came out with such an delicious smell making it so enticing. Have to mention that the bartender, Anthony, was great.

Visited Butcher & Singer during restaurant week. We had 8:30pm reservations on Friday night and were sat immediately upon arrival. Atmosphere was classy and relaxed. With a retro feel. Jazz playing not too loudly and we were able to hear each other talking without shouting even with the full restaurant. We ordered from the pre-fix menu and were not disappointed. Everything was perfectly cooked and spiced. The wait staff was very attentive and refilled water and cleared plates quickly. Food was delivered to the table very quickly and there was hardly a wait between courses. Clams casino not overly salty, tender not chewy. Sweet corn chowder was rich and creamy 8 oz Filet cooked medium - charred outside, pink to red center. Melt in your mouth tender. Each bite better than the last. Creamed spinach was the best I've had... Perfect amount of creaminess to spinach, not watery whatsoever and deliciously seasoned. Strawberry-lime sorbet made from scratch with visible strawberry seeds. Refreshingly sweet. Chocolate-salted Carmel tart was so decadent and rich, only wished we had one more to go! Perfect evening at Butcher & Singer - will definitely visit again!

The food is exquisite and the service was phenomenal. The staff was extremely attentive and very helpful with making selections from the wine list and menu. I had the Delmonico steak it was excellent. We had the shellfish, tuna carpaccio and the calamari for appetizers all were excellent. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu.

Excellent food, service and atmosphere. Grand restaurant. Everything was absolutely perfectly cooked!! My veal chop was the best I have ever had. We had the seafood towers and the crab, shrimp, oysters, clams and mussels were great!!

This place is classy. I loved all of the decor and the seating. We had Danielle as our server and she was great. The drinks came first and my friend got a sidecar, water and a coke. Lol. A serving of fresh baked bread and creamy butter. Our appetizers were raw oysters, fried oysters and shrimp cocktail. Raw oysters were west coast and east coast. Very good. Fried oysters were a little bland. Shrimp cocktail was good. The cocktail sauce was wonderful. They added fresh radish which gave it a nice touch. Main course was a demonico steak (medium well) and two filet Mignon (butterflied). All of the steaks were delicious. Our sides were cream of spinach and stuffed hash brown. Both were delicious but rather on the smaller side for the amount of money paid. We were stuffed and did not have room for dessert. I'd recommend this place for excellent service and good steak. I will have to come back and try out the desserts.

I rarely give out 5 stars, but Butcher & Singer deserves praise. I decided to take my wife here for her birthday. I noted it was her birthday on the OpenTable reservation. The host graciously said happy birthday to her as she completed seating us at our table. No further mention was made. That is until the very end when we finally decided to order some cheesecake (which was very good by the way). They took time to decorate the plate with Happy Birthday! written in chocolate and also had a lit candle. The dinner was extremely good. We opted to have a mix of east and west coast oysters followed by the Porterhouse for 2. The oysters were very good, but I must say the steak tasted great and was cooked to perfection. I can't believe it took me so long to finally try this restaurant. It is a great place to go for a special occasion or just to have a great steak!

Came here for a business meeting and dinner. Atmosphere is very elegant. The service is just incredible. Our server Brian was next level.... We asked him for red bull..... He said he does not have it, but he will run across the street and buy us a few bottles. Talk about white glove service! Just wow. We each ordered the steak that he recommended called delmanaco with crab meat on top and it was outstanding. We got mushrooms, brussels sprouts, and calamari on the side. All were awesome. We were recommended to Stratton lummos cabernet wine, it was probably one the best wines I ever had. The wine girl came out and gave me the names of the other wines that were recommended and told me where I should buy them because they dont sell them in PA. Our experience was wonderful starting, the service and ending with the amazing food. I look forward to taking my girlfriend here.

Boardwalk Empire. Came here for restaurant week and it was an amazing deal, 3 courses for $35. Started the night with a Old Fashion, $15 fantastic to the last drop. For the appetizer went with Oysters Rockefeller which were amazing and so classy. My entree went with an 8 oz. filet mignon, best piece of meat I have had in a long time, of course I has it medium rare. For desert, I went with a chocolate salted caramel desert. This is definitely a fantastic place to take a special person or a special customer.

Restaurant Week.. yey!!! Oyster, Filet, Spinach, Mashed Potato, Chocolate Tart... x2 please =) Service was great... Seated promptly. Food was excellent. Steak seasoned perfectly, the Chocolate tart was a bit on the sweet side, but was still able to finish..one =) This place definitely has a classy touch to it. Great place to take your other half if you're looking to celebrate a special occasion, or just because. Will return for their regular menu.

I had the pleasure of eating here last month with a few of my friends and it was one of the best meals I have ever eaten. On level competition with some of the best meals I had while living in Europe and right here in Philly. The steak was absolutely perfect in every way. Great char, great temperature, great flavor, and butter soft! When visiting a steak house I am focused on the meat, but the stuffed hash brown is worth mentioning as is made the perfect side kick to a perfect steak. Just a suggestion, don't waste your time or money on dessert. Just eat the hell out of the steak and sides and go to a dessert place after. The desserts were not terrible, but just not par with the rest of the meal and not worth the price. I will be returning over and over again.

this place reminds me of Gatsby--like a mobster would own this restaurant. Their drinks are expensive but delicious. I went there for restaurant week and it was definitely a good deal! I sometimes feel like restaurants don't serve their usual or good quality meats during restaurant week but butcher & singer delivered good food. I must say that the portions are on the smaller side but it was perfect for me. the place was a bit crowded and the table i was sitting in was very close to other tables.

Had a great experience here for dinner on a Friday night! They do a great job with the ambiance and service/hospitality were great. We were greeted and seated right away (with a reservation). Our server, Ricky, was great! He explained the menu options because we had never dined there before, pointing out the restaurant's specialties. He also checked on us just enough (didn't interrupt, but we never had to wait for anything we needed) which is a huge plus for me! Stuffed hash browns are amazing, and if you love a good steak, you can count on it! It's really pricey, but great for a special occasion or treat.

This place is THEE BEST steakhouse in Philly! Hands down. The Steak Tartare & Oysters Rockefeller were both great apps! The salads were delicious - The 4 of us at our table got a different kinds and we were all very happy. The Delmonico steak is in a word, incredible! Stuffed hash browns, mashed & creamed spinach are all good sides & DON'T leave with out getting the baked Alaska. Not many places offer this old school classic. And like just about everything there ... its GREAT!

I'm surprised to find that I haven't reviewed Butcher and Singer yet! It's been almost 3 seasons of restaurant weeks since I went to Butcher Singer. In fact, it was my first restaurant week restaurant I went to after moving to Philadelphia. I'm usually not a steak person, and steakhouses are never my first pick of restaurants, but I remember the filet mignon here was melt in your mouth delicious. Before I began the meal, I thought for sure I wouldn't be interested in finishing the entire steak, but lo and behold, I couldn't stop eating after my first bite. I'm eager to try the other steakhouses in Philadelphia, but it's good to know that Butcher and Singer will always be a solid option.

Long overdue review from restaurant week... This is a quality steakhouse and the decor and ambiance makes it even better! Ceilings, mahogany leather booths, and impeccable service! The place is amazing and really sets the mood for a great dinner ahead. I came with two friends, and while the menu for restaurant week was limited, the food was still delicious. To start off, I got the oyster rockefeller which were amazing. I ordered the 8 oz. filet mignon and it was cooked to a perfect medium rare as I requested. For dessert, I ordered the bread pudding. I am a sucker for bread pudding, and this one did not disappoint. It was fantastic! Butcher and Singer is definitely a place to take advantage of when Restaurant Week rolls around again. Biggest bang for your buck in my opinion. Quality food and dining experience combined. Highly recommended!

Love to come and enjoy a porterhouse and some good wine. The place is great and you feel like in a Madmen set.

The porterhouse was excellently prepared to our liking and the food was absolutely delicious! One of the best steakhouses in Philly, hands down! I took my best friend here for dinner and she said it was the best steak she ever had. The porterhouse for two was just the right amount of steak for two people. The atmosphere was elegant and awesome... our waiter, Ricky, was super attentive, outgoing and gave us a pleasant experience, the service was great and the food was great too. The only thing that I would note about this restaurant is that the bathrooms could be a little cleaner! With the atmosphere in the actual restaurant, I was expecting the bathrooms to be a little bit nicer and cleaner.

I feel like I'll just be reiterating what has been said in the countless other reviews before this one, so I'll keep this relatively short! My boyfriend and I came here to celebrate our one year anniversary after reading all the reviews about this being one of the best places for steak in Philly. My boyfriend is a big steak lover (aren't all men?) and I haven't had a really great quality steak in a long time so we figured this would be perfect. The decor is beautiful and the setting is dimly-lit and romantic. The restaurant isn't huge square footage wise, but the high ceilings make the area seem a lot larger than it actually is. The cocktails we had before being sat from the bar are very good and your tab can be directly transferred from the bar to your table. For appetizers, we got the wedge and butcher salads, both of which were good, but nothing amazing. We shared a very tender and delicious dry aged porterhouse for two which was the most tender filet I have ever had. Our sides were the hash brown and the green beans, both of which were quite good and easily big enough for two people to share. For dessert, we shared a baked Alaska, which was arguably my favorite part of the meal as I don't think I've had a dessert that delicious in a while. Service was quite attentive and our server, Zack, was very knowledgeable and polite. We had a great night and would love to come back again in the future. This is a great place for celebrations and romantic dinners.

I went to Butcher and Singer during Restaurant week, and of course opted for the Restaurant week menu. The appetizers (Corn soup & Arugula salad) were honestly very bad and deserts (Salted caramel chocolate tart & coconut cake) were just ok, nothing out the world. But I am giving 4 stars for the ambience & the entrées. The Filet Mignon and Berkshire Pork Chop were amazing and delicious! The place is very sophisticated but rustic and beautiful at the same time.

Butcher and Singer is a nice restaurant, with average 3 star food. I had the filet chared, and it was average. I also had the mushroom and hash brown sides, and both were much, much too salty. The asparagus if anything was under flavored, but I found that it was simple, and a welcome contrast to the other dishes. What I actually liked best was the shrimp and lobster salad. A close second was the baked Alaskan. The service was great, but though we asked for a chopped check for our party of 4, it wasn't done.

True to the reviews. Decadent without being gaudy. Service and food were both superb and without flaw. The only thing I can think of is that the wedge salad is served with Russian dressing. I prefer the traditional but could see if that others may like it. The steak couldn't have been better prepared. Not a single thing about it that wasn't perfect and I say this with all the gravity it deserves. My waiter Ricky was fantastic.

I'm a big fan of steakhouses, especially those that provide that true steakhouse feel. You know the ones I'm talking about: Dark wood, dim lighting, chandeliers, etc. It's just that overall feel of class that you should get when you go to a nice steakhouse. Well, Butcher and Singer did not disappoint in any of these areas. It's located in the heart of a posh area in Philly. It was within walking distance from my hotel, so I thought I would give it a shot after reading some of the reviews. Since I was eating by myself, I chose to sit at the bar. The bar area isn't huge, but the service there was great, and the bartender took the time to go over the various items on the menu. As with most steakhouses, they offer sides to share. They also bring out some bread before your meal, which I thought was great. I wasn't starving, plus I had filled up on some bread, so I went with the 8 oz filet mignon, with a side of their home made steak fries. The fries could have fed an army, so I barely made a dent in them. That said, they were great. The filet was tender and cooked perfectly. It even had some sort of sauce on top of it, which gave it a great flavor. Now, this place certainly isn't cheap. I think I got out of here for around $50-$55 including tip, but again that was just for one person. Expect to spend over $100 if you're coming here with your wife, girlfriend, etc. Overall, Butcher and Singer is a great steakhouse. I'm glad I decided to give this place a shot over the more well known chain steakhouses. I'll come back when I'm in Philly again.

Went for restaurant week, and it was delicious! I got the sweet corn soup, and it was flavorful and creamy. For the entree, I got the 8 oz filet mignon, and it cooked perfectly, very tender. They offer some sauces for the steak, but it really doesn't need anything extra. For sides, we got the creamed spinach and green beans, which were both really good. We also got an extra side of the lobster mac & cheese. Finally for dessert, I got the salted chocolate and caramel tart that came with cream on top and a raspberry sauce on the side. Would definitely come back here again on a regular night!

Wow what can I say? 5 stars this restaurant is definitely top 10 steakhouses in Philadelphia. I made reservations was immediately seated. The waitress was excellent explained everything about the menu even about the la carte style sides which are made for two people. So lets start with my appetizer which was the Rockafella oysters OMG perfection. My steak omg sex in my mouth I dont know how else to explain it Delmonico steak medium please delicious. I was on a date however I had secret admirers from the kitchen who sent vanilla ice cream & it was very rich & sweet.

They gave us an appetizer of our choosing on the house after waiting about 40 minutes for our seats, having made reservations. It was excellent! Service was very friendly and attentive, the food came out fairly quickly and was perfect. Overall, wonderful experience.

Exactly what it says on the tin: great steakhouse with an incredible ambience. Butcher and Singer is a restaurant that is designed for you to see and be seen in. My fiance and I were here for restaurant week and though the menu was limited, the food did not disappoint. The clams casino were salty and savory but with a pleasant lemon zing. The 8 oz filet (medium rare) was cooked exactly to temperature with the proper amount of searing. The green beans were tender but not soggy, though they were absolutely swimming in butter. That made them a little difficult to eat after the first few bites. The strawberry lime sorbet was the perfect palate cleanser. I paired my dinner with the Butcher Manhatten, which was a classic Manhatten with dark chocolate bitters. It was exceptionally smooth and sweet. Our waiter was excellent; he took time to describe each menu in detail and answered all of our questions. He was attentive to when we needed water and our drinks refilled but never intrusive. He was professional in his demeanor and appearance. Finally, the rest of the staff was polite and efficient from the hosts to the bussers. Though the cuisine is not adventurous or unique, the food was well crafted and the service excellent. It was a fun place to dress up and have a great dinner. I will return for a special occasion in the future or for restaurant week in a heartbeat.

Always a treat. Recently we discovered the baked potato which is served with bacon as well as butter and sour cream. Definitely worth trying if you aren't up for the hash browns! Always ask for Brian if he is working! One of my favorite places to celebrate!

A couple of the fellas and I went here for a guys night out dinner. We had a good time the food was excellent and the service was great. Their website says it a homage to old Hollywood and that is correct it is and I love that. I'm a fan of the rat pack glory days. There were three of us we skipped appetizers went straight to the main dishes. Our waiter suggested the Delmonico streak two of us had that and the other had Filet Mignon all cooked perfectly. We had Stuffed Hash Browns also suggested by our waiter it was very good crispy potato on the outside and creamy goodness on the inside we also had Asparagus. I will be returning and will go all out next time appetizers, nice steak and dessert.

The lighting in here is very romantic. I can not compare it to another Steak House because they do have a slight spin on some foods. There's no lamb but there's pork chops and swordfish. The swordfish was cooked very well. It was meaty and flavorful. I believe it was prepared in some type of oil because it was not heavy however it was seasoned well. They did lose points on the salad. The wedge was fresh with all the accoutrements but the dressings were very limited. Most places do not have blue cheese or ranch but offer peppercorn which is fairly easy to make. The oyster rockafella was tasty but a little over cooked My husband had the pork chop prepared over a fresh fruit chutney. This was honestly an award winning pork chop. Thick not dry and flavorful. Our waiter Zachary was very polite. He suggested the Moscow Mule which I declined because that could have went all the way left. Overall the food was tasty I would go back if Miss Tootsie was crowded. Sorry no pictures. Long Night.

First off, such top-notch service! I don't think I've ever liked a server as much as the gentleman who waited on us at Butcher and Singer. Thanks for making our night that much more special! It's lovely inside - definitely feels like you've time traveled back to the Roaring Twenties. They're shooting for the old-timey Hollywood classic feel here. The extra tall ceilings make everything inside seem so grand. We had the filet mignon, creamed spinach, mashed potatoes, and stuffed hash browns. Our filets were cooked perfectly medium rare and they were really nice when I asked for steak sauce (I know, I know. I'm uncouth!) - they actually make their own, which we really enjoyed. The size of the stuffed hash browns was a little too much for just the two of us - at least 4-5 people could probably enjoy one as an appetizer.

Had a nice birthday dinner Saturday night. Very clubby atmosphere. Great service. Large prices, but this is the high rent district and you expect $$$$$. Heck it cost $32 just to park for dinner. Overall the steak was good, not the greatest, but it was an enjoyable outing. The wine list is huge, and the $52 bottle we had would have cost about $10 at our local store. Would I go back? Probably not, because we have great steak houses here in Wilmington,,,, and the parking is free! (of course they did throw in a single scoop of vanilla ice cream for my wife's birthday) lol

I ate here for restaurant week. Please immediately note that I didn't order a steak, so take my review for what it is. The ambiance is gorgous. Its a throwback of mid century glamour, in the best sort of way. The waiter dress in full suits and are incredibly attentive. I found the food to be excellent but fairly safe and expensive. None of this should be surprising for a steakhouse of this sort. That being said, everything (aside from the dessert) I would order again. But if you asked me what I had in a month or two I won't remember (and I have a great food memory). I found the strawberry lime sorbet to be way too sweet. It was like a mixed drink mix with extra sugar added and then frozen. I took two small spoonfuls of it and waiting for the waitress to ask if I like it. She did not. She even bussed it with no question or comment. I ordered a $19 glass of wine which was stellar. Similar to the rest of the meal, it was great but certainly no steal. Good for groups and special occasions. You won't be disappointed. The ambiance is certainly its main appeal.

The inside of this restaurant is very classy and romantic. There is a very small bar next to the entrance for those waiting for a table. We came here for restaurant week and this place was packed. The tables were set pretty close together, not sure if this was done due to restaurant week but a high end place like this shouldn't be jamming tables to the point where the next table can hear our conversations. I could literally extend my arm and touch a stranger on the next table. On a positive note, our waiter was spectacular; very friendly and knowledgable. Our dinner began with oyster Rockefeller which is a baked parmesan oyster. My main course was the filet mignon (medium rare) which was absolutely delicious. Dessert was chocolate caramel tart, just ok. On a side note, I was expecting 2 waiter/waitress standing in front of the door lol.

We headed to Butcher and Singer for a dinner with a small group of friends for New Years Eve. I was so happy that they weren't doing a limited fixed price menu. First things first we ordered a round of fancy cocktails. Then we ordered a few appetizers; oysters, a wedge salad and calamari to start. Oysters were delicious, calamari was pretty good, and the wedge salad was good, but I wasn't a fan of the thousand island dressing on it, would have preferred blue cheese. For dinner everyone ordered steaks, duh. My husband and I split the aged rib eye which was buttery and cooked to perfection. For our sides we shared the stuffed hash browns, onion rings and the asparagus. The stuffed hash browns are ridiculously amazing and I would go back for those and a steak alone. The other two sides were fine, but nothing amazing. The winning course of this dinner (besides our steak) was the dessert. We shared carrot cake, baked Alaska, and a super-moist chocolate cake. All of the desserts were amazing! I've been to Butcher and Singer once before for their burger lunch special. It's a great spot to go for a special occasion dinner and the service is always top-notch.

One of the best dining experiences I've had! Not only does it have a beautiful atmosphere and outstanding service, but the food is amazing!!! I got the filet mignon, and it was so good! The sides were just as good. The mashed potatoes were melt in your mouth good, and the asparagus was perfectly cooked! Also, the cocktails were so good! I would definitely recommend this restaurant to a friend!!!

The service was exceptional which is what you'd expect from a high end restaurant. However, the steak was bland and not well seasoned. My experience with a well aged steak is that it has an intense flavor explosion the minute you bite into it. This wasn't the case and every bite left me feeling like I needed to add salt or some type of flavoring. Unfortunately, there are way too many good restaurants in Philly for me to come back.

I'm not a meat eater. I don't like steak, and I never have. I don't like going to steak houses because, duh, steak is the main event. At most steak houses, there is this amazing display of meat-special cuts, aged steaks, huge slabs of meat. Apparently, this is a thing that most people, at least that I know, are really into. I don't get it. Butcher and Singer is the classic steakhouse-at least it looks like it. HUGE ceilings (three story?), elegant, massive brass chandeliers. Big maroon plush leather booths line the walls and a sunken center of the room contains several large round tables with plenty of space for all of the plates you will be ordering. The way that B&S surprises and excited me in a way that not a single other steakhouse ever has, is that there is actually substance to the menu that ISN'T steak. There are several seafood options and I got to sample three of them-all very delicious. I ordered salmon. I learned that they were serving wild caught Nova Scotia salmon and they would cook it to your preferred temperature. I had a very lovely medium cut of fish, served with lemony, buttery lentils and a citrusy/acidy sauce on top. The sides are where it's at, though. I could get by on the sides alone. Their signature potato pancake business is legit. Crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. The creamed spinach and mushrooms and onions were also favorites. I really enjoyed the dedicated service, recommendations and expertly poured cocktails. I came here with my family visiting from out of town because I knew my brother is all about aged porterhouses and the like. I didn't expect to like it. But like it I did-very much so.

Very good food and excellent service. Their famous hash browns were not that impressive but everything else was amazing.

I had to write another review because this place is consistently amazing! I love the calamari, butcher salad, and baked Alaska. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Bees Knees cocktail. Sooooooo good!

I went there on Saturday night and it was a big place that felt small and intimate. The service was good and the cocktails were tasty. The wedge and NY strip were very good and the steak was cooked properly. Also, the sides are very good as well.

Best steakhouse in Philadelphia. The scene is pure "big time" and the service is very good. I tried Brussel sprouts for the first time ever here and now I'm hooked (order them, you won't be disappointed). Make no mistake, it's pricey, perhaps a special occasion place for most. But it's worth it.

My favorite steakhouse in the city! Everything is always cooked to perfection. Absolutely loved the filet, green beans and butternut squash soup. While it is definitely upscale, it's comfortable and great for a date night.

Summary: * I am between a 3-4 star rating for this place. 3 stars for the porterhouse steak, but the excellent service and elegant ambiance makes it 4 stars. * Superb attentive, friendly service. The food is also better and cheaper than most NYC's fine steak restaurants. However, the amount of money required to dine here is still questionable for the steak. * This review is only based on the dry-aged porterhouse, drinks (cocktails and wine) and some appetizers and sides. Food and drinks: * The best "melt-in-your-mouth" steak in the PA/NJ area (to me) is at Elements, for the Wagyu beef, known worldwide for its marbling characteristics and naturally enhanced, flavor, tenderness, and juiciness. Thanks Elements for setting the bar so high and making it tough to appreciate other types of beef. * We had the dry-aged porterhouse (for two). Unlike wet-aged beef (usually found in supermarkets), dry-aged beef, on the other hand, produces more intense flavor and is the way the most high-end beef is aged. The porterhouse steak we had was seared well at high temperature since it had a nice crust and a soft, moist pink center. We both really liked the tenderloin side of the porterhouse. The NY strip side had more meat, but was chewy and didn't seem as flavorful. So, we recommend getting just the filet. * For the sides, I recommend the green beans which came with roasted almonds and was surprisingly good. The deep-fried oysters was above average for being deep fried since you can still taste the juice from the oyster. * Limited cocktail selection, although specific cocktails can be made per our request. The $75 bottle cabernet sauvignon wine that they recommended was an above average blend, which paired well with our steak for its higher tannins and savory character. Venue: Nestled amidst the lofts and retail stores that pepper the city's trendy Walnut street is this elegant, fine dining steak house. From the outside, this spacious steak house seems like nothing more than another retail space. I was pleasantly surprised by the high ceiling and warm elegance - and not over the top fancy. Service: Excellent, attentive service from all staff. We bought a bottle of red wine with the help of their wine expert, who took the time to provide us with some good suggestions of red wine.

Without a doubt, the best steak house in Philly (and dare I say on the Eastern US!). Beautiful space, courteous and professional service, and amazing food. Be ready to spend some money, worth every penny (or should I say every Ben!).

Double date dinner for Valentine's Day. YUMMMMY! Escargot was Mm..Mm..GOOD! Steak Tartare was my husband's favorite. We ordered the 50+ oz Tomahawk Bone in Ribeye Steak - we shared it between the four of us and it was more than enough. Do not even get me started on their delicious sides. We enjoyed it here and you will too. P.S. Shout out to our awesome server, Brian who is 6'7" from South Carolina. :)

This is not your typical steakhouse. An décor in tribute to 1920's Hollywood, with low lights and dark woods, my special date and I were instantly transported to a long-gone era. Have you ever walked into a place and knew you were going to love it? Well this was the case at Butcher's and Singer's. This is the story of my 90 minutes love affair with the best steakhouse in the city. We ordered the 28-days aged, porterhouse, medium rare for two ($86)- Cooked perfectly with precise temperature and seasoning. It had a sublime tenderness and mineral complexity that most steaks aren't able to execute. The contrast between the charred exterior and the warm, juicy center was mouth-watering. Worth every penny. Highly recommend the hashbrowns ($9). You have not lived until you've eaten this simple, but crazy delicious side dish. Stuffed with sour cream, more potatoes, and onions, I would come here to just to eat this. Save some room in your stomach because the BAKED ALASKA ($12) will take your breath away. It's essentially a meringue-topped dome of a baked Alaska hiding housemade banana ice cream and apricot compote. So heavenly...HMM. Our server, Amy, was professional and knowledgeable. Her smiles and positive demeanor were a joy to see. Impeccable service. So schedule your cardiology appointment, gulp away your lipitor, and spend your entire days at the gym because Butcher and Singer's quality of food will keep you coming back for more. Next to Capital Grill's, this steakhouse is good as it gets in the city of brotherly love.

I went with a few coworkers for lunch during the extended portion (thank you!!) of restaurant week. We made a reservation for noon, and even with a group of 6, we were seated immediately. Our server was super friendly and attentive. I had the butternut squash soup as a starter, and it was out of this world, easily my favorite part of the meal. It was so creamy, and the pumpkin seeds on top were the perfect crunch factor. I split a crab cake sandwich and a seared tuna salad with my coworker because we couldn't decide between the two. Both were fantastic. For dessert- a salted caramel chocolate tart, YUM! The caramel was ooey gooey, and the raspberries on the side added to it perfectly. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful. They have ornate chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, and the dark color scheme makes it feel cozy and fancy at the same time. I love the big booths; they're perfect to accommodate larger parties. The only thing I wasn't prepared for was the amount of time the meal took from start to finish. Especially with the three course restaurant week meal, it was an especially long lunch break. The regular menu can get pretty pricey, but this is definitely worth a restaurant week visit!

It's a beautiful restaurant with ambiance, and class. From the moment we walked into the establishment I had a smile on my face with pure anticipation. We were seated and our sever greeted us promptly. The food as full of taste. I had Bone in Ribeye and my date had Filet. We also had the mushrooms. Everything was made to perfection. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a perfect night out to dinner.

I was here as a first date on Valentines Day, so to be fair, I was more focused on the guy I was with than on where I was eating. We had a reservation, but had to wait about 15 minuets even still (though this is understandable since it was Valentine's Day and a Saturday). The staff was very courteous and attentive, and all managed to look upbeat despite working the late hour on such a day. The menue was simple and didn't offer much variety, but the food I tried was well prepared. We did order Caesar Salad and specified no anchovies, but mine still had a fishy smell, so I'm guessing the salads are not made fresh and just have a giant one from which they serve everyone (and I guess pick out anchovies for those who don't want any?) The chicken I ordered was perfectly cooked, very juicy and we'll seasoned. The portions were large and I didn't even finish mine. The decor I suppose attempted to have an Old Hollywood feel: very dim lighting, large couches for seats, sunken tables. Overall a pleasant experience

Review is based on restaurant wk menu, we stop by for weekday lunch. Shared butternut squash soup, Rockefeller oyster for appetizer. Soup was hot and creamy just I like. Oyster was delicious as well. We got burger and crab sandwich for entree. Burger meat was well cooked since my mother in law ordered well done but was still juicy. I thought was pretty delicious. Fries were salty but I found most fries are salty to me in Philadelphia so.. Crab sandwich was my favorite, perfectly seasoned and thin slice chips were delicious as well. For dessert we got carrot cake and I thought was little bland. Salted chocolate and caramel tart was very delicious. Good portion of food and great service. I would go back.

Bitcher and singer is a dinner place and it is in a perfect location on rittenhouse square. Perfect for any night on the town to Philly. I came here in August and wanted to rate my experience on this place. K- the place was clean, it is a top of the line steakhouse, the bathrooms were really clean as well! I- the hostess and the server represented the place well. They were all very professional. S- the service was decent. The food came out at a good time. However, they weren't very attentive with us as far as our drinks go. They didn't fill up our waters as much as we desired. S- I got the filet mignon and it was TO DIEEE FOR. It was a great steak and it was amazing. The sides were good too and for desert I had the baked Alaska and that was amazing as well. For a fancy steakhouse the price wasn't bad and it was actually much cheaper than Gordon's restaurant in Las Vegas. Overall a fabulous place to dine and perfect location to drink at bars after and have fun ;)

Beautiful restaurant and phenomenal steak tartare. The food overall here was good, though the steak tartare was the only thing that was truly memorable. We had the crab cocktail, steak tartare, porterhouse, stuffed hash browns, and the brussels sprouts (highly recommend these as well). The service left a lot to be desired. Half the time, we were waiting for our water glasses to be refilled because the service was extremely inattentive. The steak was well-cooked, however came out a little cold because it must have been sitting for a while before it was ever brought to our table. I would give this place 4 stars for food and 2.5 stars for service. I may try it again and give them a second chance, however based on my experience there are better places to spend this kind of money on a meal.

Butcher and Singer is so awesome! I've been here before, but came here again last night to try the Restaurant Week menu. Service: 3 Stars (or should I say... 3 Starrs? lol, jk.) We had a server who was good in general, but numerous times, our water glasses remained unfilled for a while, and dirty dishes were not picked up when our next course was dropped. Several staff members walked by without even noticing, and it was difficult to wave them down. I'm a bit more lenient in my review because of how busy the restaurant was, even on a Tuesday night, but all of this could have been avoided if they had picked up the dirty dishes as they were dropping the next course in the first place. Food: 5 Stars Everything was delicious. I didn't feel like quality was compromised as a result of Restaurant Week. The pear, walnut, frisee & blue cheese salad was delicious, and I felt like the portion was just right. The 8-oz. Filet was awesome as well - very tender, cooked just right, with a good flavor. For dessert, I had the chocolate caramel tart, which consisted of a chocolate shortbread shell filled with chocolate ganache and caramel sauce, topped with a dollop of shipped cream - a simple, yet delicious ending to a great meal. Cocktail-wise, I recommend the Brown Derby for those who like sweeter, fruity drinks (it's bourbon, grapefruit juice, and agave). I can't wait to come back again on a regular night.

I went during restaurant week in Philly, so you already know this review is going to be good! (Although it is extremely late) Butcher and Singer is classic, classy and has some serious character. This upscale steakhouse has the feel of 1940's Classic America. Though I was limited to the special menu designed for restaurant week, the steak was cooked to perfection. A perfect spot to take a date for a romantic evening. Review to be updated once I indulge in the full menu.

Visited during restaurant week. Unlike the majority of restaurants, B&S actually serves the exact same items in quality and portion-size on the RW menu as during the rest of the year and those items were superb in every respect.

Came super early for our reservation but was seated anyway. The interior feels like a movie set from the 40s. A traditional old school steakhouse with impressive chandeliers and a sky high ceiling. The seating was comfortable and spaced out so we don't have to hear our neighbors. We ordered a bottle of Napa cab, which went perfectly with our delmonico rib eye and New York strip. For appetizer we had a half dozen oysters and then had our steaks with the mushroom and onion sides and stuffed hashbrown. I thought the hashbrown might be too heavy but it's delicious with the steak. Add the onion and mushroom, and it makes the perfect combination of salt and texture to lighten the savory steak and crunch from the potatoes. The famous baked Alaska dessert is YUM!!! Get it, even if you're stuffed. Service is what you would expect from a steakhouse of this caliber. On point. You don't have to come here often but when you do, go all out!

Cool, beautiful ambiance; felt like the Rat Pack could be smoking cigars in the corner booth. Delicious filet, good traditional sides like Ceasar salad and creamed spinach. Just a real old school steak house which concentrates on simplicity and quality. Burger was great. Baked Alaskan for dessert was fun. I'll be back just for the strong drinks in the classy booths. It would be five stars if I could afford it more often...

I had the most expensive lunch of my life yesterday at Butcher and Singer, and I have to say it was worth every penny!! I was with a group from work and we were celebrating the end of the year. For starters our server was amazing, made good recommendations, and prevented us from ordering too many sides. I arrived before my party and decided to have a drink while I waited for the rest of my party. The atmosphere is classy and upscale, but maintains that good ole steak house feel. I can definitely see myself dining here again, but most of all, just sitting at the bar enjoying a glass of Scotch. We started out with the large shellfish platter. It was served with shrimp, oysters, clams, lump crab mean, and Alaskan king crab legs. There was plenty of seafood goodness on that platter for the party of six, well five, since one member of the party did not eat seafood leaving more oysters for me. My two options for lunch were the filet and the NY strip; I decided to go with the strip. BLT steak in NY is still my favorite steak house, but WOW that strip was extremely flavorful and cooked to the perfect temperature. In addition to be a good tasting steak, it was pretty generous for a lunch size portion. Of course we had to finish off the meal with sweet ending, so the guilty pleasure of choice was baked Alaska for the table. It was ok, but I realized I haven't really missed much. I am sticking with the apple crisp. Butcher and Singer is expensive; no different than any other great steakhouse. What you are paying for is quality and that is exactly what you are going to receive from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave.

Came here last night for a nice meal with my boyfriend for my birthday. It seemed that we had two waiters.. I'm not sure if one was training or they have different waiters greet and start the meal, and a different one finish it. The one that greeted us wasn't as friendly as I'd hoped, but our second waiter really made up for it. He was totally on top of our table and treated us first-timers with a smile. After we ordered our drinks, the brought out bread which was perfectly warm. I ordered a Caesar salad to start. My boyfriend and I both ordered filets (12 oz for him and 8 oz for me) and split an order of the fries. The fries were great, they were really more like hash browns or wedge potatoes. The steak was cooked perfectly and was one of the best I've ever had. I would definitely recommend this place for a fancy night out and a great meal. My only regret is not saving room for dessert!

Had a wonderful meal last night! Steaks were melt in your mouth delicious, definitely try the special. It's 1.00 more than the New York and filled with fatty deliciousness. The restaurant is loud but very beautiful. The 18.00 valet fee is steep as is the corkage but well worth it. I'm so glad we chose to celebrate a special occasion here. It was one of the better meals I've had in a while.

The steak and servers are always fabulous. For dinner you have to go with the delmonico and for lunch the burger is the best! Last night We had to wait over 45 minutes even though we had a reservation. And there was too much salt in the sides.

Came here while I was visiting Philly. Interior is nice and the food was good. The steak came out a little undercooked but it still taste great. Portions are pretty big so maybe next time I will share with my gf. Overall I would come back again.

I had dinner here last weekend, and it was a wonderful dining experience. The ambiance and decor are wonderful. The noise level of the restaurant did not rise to the level where you would have to start yelling in order to be able to have a conversation with your dinner companions. The steaks are cooked almost perfectly, to the requested temperature, but are seasoned perfectly. The side dishes are huge, plentiful to share between 2 to 3 people. The only dish that didn't wow me was the Fried Oyster appetizer. The oysters were breaded and fried perfectly...not greasy, but I found it difficult to eat with the way they're presented -- sitting in a half shell filled with tartar sauce, which the oyster is topped with a small dollop of creme fraiche. I found that if you have creme fraiche, then the tartar sauce is not necessary. It was also a bit difficult to pick them up and out of the half shell to eat. Otherwise, everything else was delicious, including a Baked Alaska dessert. The service was pretty spot on as well.

I will begin with the food is too salty. I will also openly state that sometimes that isn't necessarily a bad thing. They have the best burger in Philadelphia. Trust me here; i'm not going to eat somewhere else next week and swear that they have the best burger in Philadelphia and suddenly develop amnesia and forget about this review touting how good the Butcher and Singer burger is. This burger is 10/10 people and their fries besides the aggressive amount of salt are 10/10. Want a food coma to return to work with? This is your place. I'll say it one more time with my hand on a bible, this is the best burger in Philadelphia and it only costs $10.95 at lunch (not sure if pull some shenanigans and hike the price at dinner). IT IS THE BEST BURGER IN PHILADELPHIA. okay i'm done.

I recently went to Butcher & Singer for restaurant week with a friend. The food was perfection. The portions were huge, especially for restaurant week. The service was also amazing and everyone from the hostess to the server to the manager went out of their way to make sure we had a great evening and enjoyed everything. It's not cheap, but I definitely recommend coming here for a special occasion or a fancy dinner or just because you feel like treating yourself. Also, the drinks were perfectly mixed, and the wine list is perfect for a steakhouse, with lots of great red wines to choose from. Overall, I can't wait to go back!

Last night was the first night, and quite frankly the only night, I have eaten at Butcher & Singer. I will start by saying the inside of this restaurant is gorgeous. The interior reminded me of a place where Al Capone would eat back in the 1920's. The service was great and our waiter was very polite, knowledgable and professional. (I believe his name was Rob). That being said, the food ultimately did not live up to my expectations. I have been to many fine dining restaurants and steakhouses from all over the US, Morton's and Prime 112 in Miami to name a few. And I can honestly say that I was not impressed with B&S. The price range at B&S is the typical price range you would see at any luxury steakhouse. So you would think the taste and quality would live up to price. I was with a party of four, a couples night if you will. For appetizers we had ordered the tuna carpaccio and the calamari. The tuna carpaccio was well.... tuna carpaccio... Very basic and I guess what you would expect from tuna carpaccio. The calamari on the other hand was nothing special. I have probably had calamari from over 30 different restaurants and I would not put B&S's calamari in my top 10. I had also found that the dish had more fried peppers than actual calamari. For our entrees, three of us had ordered the filet mignon, and the fourth ordered surf and turf. We ordered the brussel sprouts and stuffed hash brown to share at the table as well. My filet specifically was a butterflied, medium well, 12 oz filet with a side of bearnaise sauce. Now from going to many high end restaurants I had expected my filet to melt in my mouth and remind me of why I paid $48 for a filet mignon. This steak did not meet my expectations and left me saying "this is okay." My friend who I was with had also agreed with my assessment 100%. Asking us if "the chef was checking his Facebook while cooking this steak," as his well-done filet was dry. TL; DR - Butcher & Singer is a very elegant restaurant with a luxurious atmosphere as well as polite and professional service. However in my opinion the quality of the food did not live up to it's price point.

Went here for my anniversary and birthday dinner.I was a little excited because it was given good reviews for the food and decor. Well... 1. The Hollywood theme was amazing. Such an intimate setting with nice low lighting. However, I was sat on the side in an empty restaurant so didn't see much of the paintings. The chandelier was nice though. (that was for Sia) 2. My waiter was amazing!!! He come off first as a douche bag but later proved to be such a genuine individual. I was having problems with my alcoholic choice and kept trying drinks till we found the perfect one. Didn't get charged for it either. #winning 3. The Delmarco steak which I shared with my fiancee was ok. Left side was tough to chew and a bit dry. The right side was buttery and had that melt in your mouth texture. Wished the whole steak was like that. Hash browns was our side dish. it gets tiring quick, that dry texture. Desert we had the signature baked Alaska. To be honest it was way too sweet and had too much whipped cream. It was not enjoyable at all. Overall for the price it's not the best place to go for steak. I spent about 140$ and left still hungry and had terrible seating. It's definitely not a place I would go back to. I've had great steak especially in New York, so this was a bit disappointing. Better off at another steak house cause here I felt like I threw money away.

Had a fantastic night with my fiancé here! I had written to open table to reserve intimate table if possible as we were celebrating a special occasion ( his birthday) they gave us a beautiful booth and overall a fabulous meal. Have been to many steak houses in the city , butcher and singer is fun, not stuffy and great food!!

You will NOT be disappointed! My husband and I go here often, and love it every time. While he is definitely a steak guy who loves the Delmonico, I do not eat red meat and yet enjoy the food just as much. The salmon is my favorite, and the sides are amazing as well. As for dessert, I am usually a chocolate person, but the Baked Alaska is a must-try! Service is always impeccable and the atmosphere is cool, you feel like you're in an old mob movie or something. Yes it is a bit pricey, but if you're willing to spend the money than it is definitely worth it. One of our top picks in the city!

Butcher and Singer provided a quality dining experience in all ways. Some friends and I came here for a nice dinner to enjoy each others' company with great food. The atmosphere is reserved, with dim lights and high ceilings adorned with chandeliers, and is a place that you should dress well for. Our booth was in the back of the room and circular, which allowed our party of six to freely converse without worrying about bothering the people dining next to us. Our waiter was also absolutely excellent. He gave suggestions based off of individual preferences, joked with us, laughed with us, and genuinely seemed interested in our lives and making sure we had a great experience. His interaction with us truly made this visit exceptional. That said, on to food. We all ordered steaks: the Delmonico for most, and the Dry Aged Porterhouse for three was split among others. The meat was seasoned well and juicy, while being cooked perfectly as ordered. I enjoy lean meat and did not expect the Delmonico to be as fatty as it was, but I still enjoyed every single bite of it. It was just absolutely delicious. The ones who ordered the Porterhouse were also very pleased and satisfied with the amount of meat that came with it. For sides, we decided on the brussels sprouts, creamed spinach, and stuffed hash browns, which were all amazing. The brussels sprouts were my favorite though, definitely the best I've had before as they were cooked with little bits of bacon and were soft but not mushy. To finish, we had the Baked Alaska which was well presented and tasted great. Not too sweet, and a great ratio of meringue to ice cream. I thoroughly enjoyed my evening at Butcher and Singer, and highly recommend this place for those looking for quality food and quality time.

I hadn't been to Restaurant Week since Winter 2011. I wasn't too impressed with my experience at Mercato and vowed never to go again. In September of 2013, I had the most amazing birthday dinner at Barclay Prime, and wanted to try out Butcher and Singer as soon as I could. I figured RW was the best time to do so without breaking the bank. We didn't break the bank (protip: do happy hour before dinner elsewhere) but I also felt a smidge cheated. Appetizers were oysters Rockefeller (3) and a green salad. Fine and dandy. The steaks were fantastic- 8oz of filet cooked medium rare. Sadly, Zack's was a little overcooked. Nicely seasoned nonetheless. Here's where it gets dicey: the sides were literally the sizes of petri dishes. Teensy, tiny bowls of mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. Do mashed potatoes really cost that much to make? Come on. Desserts were also miniature in size. The bread pudding was pretty boring but we pounced on the salted chocolate caramel tart. Good stuff. We were in and out in 75 minutes. You live, you learn with Restaurant Week. I'm glad I got to experience B&S (that ceiling! The booths! The service!) but I think i'm good on RW for another three years.

I came here during restaurant week to try their famous steak that everyone raves about. After examining my 8 oz medium rare filet I carved a piece from the side and took a bite. Yes is was absolutely delicious! it was grilled to perfection, the outside was crisp with a smoky and peppery flavor and the meat was tender and juicy. I am highly tempted to go back and try a dry aged porterhouse. Now why do I give this 4/5 stars? because I have yet to eat at barclay prime, and this wasnt the best steak I;ve ever had. Its a damn good steak that will leave you happy for sure. This a a really good deal for restaurant week.

My quest for a steak experience started as I researched the top steakhouses in philly I came across butch and singer and the infamous barclay prime. I chose butcher and singer because of the wealth of reviews and the different styled menu. The parking in the area was easy to find but expensive with no validation costing around $30-40. As I approached the restaurant doors were opened and kindly greeted. The hostess checked our coats, off to a great start. Bread was served with butter. For appetizers, my girlfriend and I got the fried calamari and the oysters. The oysters were good the sauces made it great. But they were fairly small. The calamari breading was nice and light but seemed to lack enough seasoning, it came with a marinara sauce that seemed to be also under seasoned. For the entree a delmonico ribeye medium rare topped with oscar on a bed of asparagus, onions and mushrooms, and mashed potatoes. The steak was an average steak although cooked to medium rare had a hard time cutting through for the price of the steak. My girlfriend ordered the steak medium but came out more on the rare side. The steak wasn't trimmed well, pieces of char which left a burnt taste in my mouth. The Oscar was good but lacked depth of flavor, it tasted like crab tossed in water downed mayo. The asparagus was nothing special, maybe boiled. The mushrooms were awesome. The mashed potatoes were average, fluffy and whipped. I wanted to like the steak but with every bite the taste worsened. The waiter asked if I wanted to box my steak. I thought you want me to box up fat? I was nice to leave a generous tip on an already pricy meal. I have no qualms with spending money on a great steak, but when the expectation is high it is hard to swallow. I skipped dessert. As far as the service goes my water was always full and the manager stopped by to ask how we were doing, which was a nice touch. I have been to quite a few steakhouses, Lewnes, chop house, the Palm, Ruth's Chris, Morton's just to name a few, this place is best left as a gift to the unknowing out of towner as myself. Best to try barclay prime if I am ever in town again as they are ranked #4 in the U.S. Why didn't I tell anyone at the restaurant of my experience? It's best not to complain to the people that prepare your food.

Very nice and classy place in the city, perfect for business lunches. The inside is beautiful and it definitely feels more upscale and serious than Del Frescos. There was a bit of a wait for a table during lunch, so make reservations just in case! I don't eat steak so I can't judge it on that. My salmon was pretty average and dry, but the vegetables it came with were really good though. I sampled the crab cake, and that was much better! You can order half portions of the standard salads as a side, and it was a nice size, but not that great. Tasted like a cheap fast food salad. Overall this place is really beautiful but not one of my favorites.

Friends gathering! It was my first time there, but I really enjoyed the food there. On the other hand, the servers were servicing too quickly. The hand came randomly. I was shocked every time he came to put new utensils or plates. Other then that, awesome food and great decor!

This is the best steak I've had in Philly! Started out with a butter nut squash soup that was sooo good. The mashed potatoes were buttery and delicious. The rolls were served with the most amazing butter I have ever had. Can't wait to go back.

"Judgement Free Zone!?" My wife & I went here for our anniversary which I am not sure why they bothered asking if it was a special occasion because they did nothing special unlike (Del Frisco's, or Tulia's Garden) We have been to many high-end steak houses & this was our first time here. I have been to mostly all of the Steven Starr establishments but this place was a little different. I felt like we were being judged on what wine we ordered & how much food we ordered. We ordered a bottle of wine, 2 apps, 2 sides & 2 dinners. After we ordered it just seemed like we were just $ signs sitting at a table. It seemed the more wine you bought the better service you got. Even though we were already spending $200 plus on dinner!! The food was very good! Service just ok but again its all about racking up the bill to get A+ service. We had the wedge, crab cake, veal chop, filet, stuffed hash browns & creamed spinach. Everything was delicious & cooked perfectly!! I highly recommend the veal chop medium rare in the peppercorn cognac sauce!! The filet was also great!!! Ask for a sauce to go with your steak!! Overall: Great food but not it's not Del Friscos!!! No hurry to return!

If you're cheap, don't read this review. Point blank: this place is incredible. It's an experience in it's own. I'm not going to harp on the food, but it is delicious. This place is the advocate of steak houses in the city. Please do, however, let me harp on the customer service. It's impeccable from the moment you walk in the door. You are greeted with graciousness. Seated with suave. The cocktails are incredible. Come here. You won't regret it.

Perhaps the most beautiful steakhouse in Philadelphia, Butcher and Singer transports diners into a 1940's Prohibition-style space with high-ceilings and gorgeous chandeliers. If this were all flash and no substance, the restaurant would not be completely packed. My friend Chris W and I shared the Lump Crab Cocktail, a small portion of delectable jumbo lump crabmeat. We then set our sights on a medium-rare Porterhouse Steak for Two, a beautiful piece of meat dry aged for 21 to 30 days and charred to perfection. Our side was a potato hashbrown cake filled with onions and sour cream. "This is the best steak I've ever eaten," Chris commented. Indeed, this steak surpasses the Porterhouse at Morton's and the filet portions are as juicy and tender as anything you'll find at Smith & Wollensky, Capital Grille, Ruth's Chris, Sullivan's, and The Palm. The strip steak portion was equally delicious. The potato hashbrown cake simply elevates the experience into the ethereal. A steakhouse experience wouldn't be the same without a Manhattan, so I ordered a Butcher Manhattan (Bulleit whiskey, Dolin sweet vermouth, Vermont maple syrup, and Aztec chocolate). "I normally don't like Manhattans, but this is good!" Chris said. The food alone is excellent and the service is equally outstanding, but I'd expect nothing less from a Stephen Starr restaurant. It was three years since my last visit and I am still impressed. I've recommended this restaurant to several friends. Butcher and Singer is a first-class steak experience all the way.

I live for restaurant week for one reason only. That reason is Butcher and Singer. The RW menu is a perfect sampling of all of their deliciousness. The steak is juicy and full of flavor. The mashed potatoes are creamy . If you don't want to break the bank however, skip the cocktails. No matter when you go, make sure to dress classy. This is a classy establishment (think Mad Men!). No jeans, please! I always feel like my effort has gone to waste when I see someone in chucks. We did order a baked potato (off the RW menu!). It was worth the extra as it was buttery and salty. I felt like high society dining here and getting waited on by such a great staff. I can't wait for next time!

We have always wanted to try Butcher and Singer and so when it was restaurant week in Phila, we decided to try it. Made a reservation and all went well. This place is dimly lit and music is playing making it a nice atmosphere. The service is excellent, as you would expect. The food was good, but I didn't think it was the best steakhouse I've ever been to, and here is what we sampled: They start you with a hearty roll & butter. For restaurant week they had a limited menu to choose from and we had the potato leek soup, 8 oz filet, bread pudding and for the other selection the frisee salad, salmon and the chocolate tart. The coffee is excellent. Thank goodness for restaurant week because some of these restaurants are over priced.

Wow...my wife and I had an outstanding dinner here one evening after seeing a show. We started with the shrimp cocktail, which came with four large jumbo shrimp, which were absolutely fresh. We both went the Wedge salad, which was one of my favorite Wedge salads I've had. I really liked the Russian dressing with the blue cheese crumbles and candied bacon! For our entree, we went with the dry aged porterhouse for two, which has a filet on one side and a strip steak on the other. We preferred the filet side of the porterhouse better. For our sides, we got the stuffed hash brown and the creamed spinach, both of which were excellent. We ended the evening with the Baked Alaska and the New York Style Cheesecake. The cheesecake was good, but nothing special. The Baked Alaska was awesome! Service as you would expect, was top notch throughout our meal. Looking forward to going back one day!

Rib eye came out perfectly medium rare on a hot sizzling fucken plate. My rib eye was delicious and the waiter guided me through the whole menu. WARNING- the steaks are big. Sides are typical. I like the open space room. Bar are is really big too.

My hubby and I make a habit of checking out really nice steakhouses all over the U.S. when we travel, and I travel 4+ months a year. This is up there with my favorite filet. No complaints. I went with a group from work. The atmosphere was reminiscent of classic, masculine quality like what I would have pictures a 50's hollywood glam like a place I would picture Cary Grant walking into -- but it had a fun side with a huge mural of dogs at a gambling table along one wall. They had a great wine selection. I had the onion soup as an appetizer then the filet with a side of mashed potatoes. Comfort food at its finest.

Butcher and Singer is a great restaurant. It is a great deal during Restaurant Week, however the selections are alright. I ordered the oysters rockefeller, petite filet mignon, and bread pudding. The bread pudding was delicious and the perfect ending to the meal. The filet mignon was not the same light texture I would expect from a typical filet, I can't describe it, but it was weird. The oysters, were just okay. The price, awesome! My BF ordered off the regular menu, and I enjoyed the a-la-carte items a little bit more. The crab cocktail and calamari is yummy. The NY strip that my BF ordered though was amazing! He also ordered a side of the mushroom and onions and it was very flavorful! The service is good, as you would expect from a fancy place. I had made reservations on OpenTable and was immediately seated so that is another plus. Overall, it was a good experience. I think I would only return for a special occasion because it is pricey. It is your typical steakhouse items, simple and delicious. The best part, they have two dogs as their mascot.

A Sunday Night Dinner for our family was a wonderful event. Superb service by everyone from the manager to his assistants to our server and the waitstaff. The food was flawless. Delicious steaks and side dishes to share. And try to save room for a few desserts to share. It's nice to go with a larger group if you want to taste everything. The wine list is extraordinarily deep and wide. This place is not for the budget conscious as the prices are high. But the food quality service and satisfaction quotient are at the top.

This is an excellent restaurant and a great atmosphere. The Escargot is to die for. The steak and sides are fantastic. Great service and their wine guy was pretty good but I did not go crazy for the wine he suggested. The night my bf and I went we ended up with a late reservation and ended up shutting the place down. They did not rush us and everyone there was a complete delight. I can't wait to go back.

Beautiful decor

We came back here again in a regular day, and I had a even better experience. Butcher and Singer truly provides the best service and steak in Philly. Our waiter is one of the best I had (including Michelin Star restaurant). Highly highly recommend: Mushroom&Onions (a side) I compared this side in any other restaurant with Butcher and Singer, it always wins.

This is how a steakhouse should be, great service from friendly conversational people, an atmosphere that makes you feel like you are in an episode of Mad Men at a 4 martini lunch, and flavorful steaks that are cooked to your liking. The space is beautiful and really you just need to go and see if yourself. The bar is smaller and most of the restaurant is dedicated to seated dining. We started off with the steak tartare and the Butcher salad which is something like a chopped salad. I was not going to get the tartare until our server described it. B&S takes filet and chops it finely and then mixes in herbs with Worcestershire and Tobasco, it was the Tobasco that really caught my attention. This tartare is definitely in my top 3 now, it has just the right amount of heat from the Tobasco. The bread that they serve with the tartare is also stellar, perfect companion. For dinner my better half went with the 8 oz filet cooked medium (I know I am working on her with this) and I went with the dry aged porterhouse cooked medium rare. We also ordered the stuffed hash browns and the asparagus at the sides. The steaks were awesome, cooked to perfection, and had great flavor. The asparagus was very good, I mean either you like that or not, the bernaise sauce it came with was very good. The stuffed hash browns are awesome and absolutely huge, they stuff them with onions, sour cream, and a few other things, the point is get this. We ended the meal with a slice of cheesecake which was very good, it was not like eating a brick, it was actually kind of light and fluffy. Also did a couple Moscow Mules and I have to say that the housemade ginger beer is on point. I mean it's really hard to go wrong if it's a Starr Restaurant but B&S is a must go to if you are in Philly.

It just keeps getting better! Entering this restaurant is like stepping into a time machine into the glamour of Hollywood in the 1940s. This restaurant feels sophisticated and comfortable with an elegant glow set by the lighting. Wine specials for restaurant week are great to pair with the three course menu. For my second year at restaurant week I've enjoyed the seasonal soup appetizer, 8 oz. filet mignon, and dessert. Cooked to perfection my filet was tender, warm inside and nicely charred, seasoned on the outside (I love adding a blue cheese crust for some extra flavor). The creamed spinach and stuffed hash browns are hands down my picks for side dishes AND don't forget to save room for the baked Alaska for dessert!!! Every visit only confirms my belief that the staff here is trained to perfection and invested in their work. It was also wonderful to be greeted by the manager, Thomas Finnegan. Keep up the good work!

I might have expected too much after reading so many reviews from yelp. Had steak and it was just ok. Honestly I could have cooked better than that. The lighting inside the restaurant was just too dark and the service was bad. Couldn't grab the waiter because he was too busy.

Had dinner here the other night. Food and service were excellent. We had the porterhouse for 2, mashed potato, creamed spinach and onion rings. The meat was cooked perfectly. Some of the dishes could have used a tad more salt but we took care of that at the table. We shared a baked Alaska which I rarely see on menus. We are Rupaul fans so with each bit of dessert it was mandatory to say "Hiiiiiiieeeeeeeeee""

Eating there was a fantastic dining experience! When you walked in the restaurant, you would be attracted to the deco of this place, high-ceiling with crystal pendant, dark but warm lights and black/white uniform of the servers. My friend and I were seated at a booth. This place is kinda of packed on this Thursday night which I was a little surprised. I ordered fried calamari as appetizer, it was so good. I have tried friend calamari in many places, but this one is the best I have ever had, mainly because the calamari was very fresh. For entree, I tried the porterhouse, I was very impressed by how juicy and well seasoned and cooked of the steak. I would say, this is the best steak I have ever had so far! I also ordered asparagus as the side, it is designed to share, so usually for two people, one side is enough. For desert, I had macchiato coffee and shared cheesecake. The coffee comes in a tiny cup, honestly I didn't expect the cup of coffee was that small! But the cheesecake was awesome, it's original cheesecake with some blueberry jelly on the side. One thing I noticed was that two other tables ordered carrot cake as desert, and neither of them finished the cake, so I'm guessing maybe if anyone would like to order desert, it's better off skip the carrot cake. It was definitely a nice and high-end dining experience. Good for special occasion and romantic date night. Bring your girl there, and she will be very impressed! :) I'm glad that I finally found my favorite steak house in Philly! Will definitely go back there soon!

Came here for a business lunch, was really excited as I walked in. The decor inside is pretty amazing, very classy and old-school. I think I heard the waiter tell us that the building used to be an investment bank, and then it turned into a bank, and now it's a restaurant (the vault downstairs is their wine cellar!). I ordered a burger, cooked medium, but it was a bit rarer than I would have liked. It was a decent burger, but I came here with high expectations and was a tiny bit disappointed. Service was pretty decent throughout, and nobody at our table had too much to complain about. I may come back and do Butcher and Singer the right way, meaning ordering a steak instead of a burger, but for now I can only give three out of five stars.

I hate to see that some people had a poor/mediocre experience. My husband and I have been to a lot of restaurants and so we (of course) compare this one to others and can honestly say this is one of our favorites in Philly. We always have a great experience. Great service, attentive waitstaff, spectacular food, cool atmosphere. My husband has dreams about the Delmonico and the Baked Alaska. I guess I better take him back there soon. We just tried R2L last night and wish we had gone to Butcher and Singer.

Hands down the best steak house in Philadelphia. They really capture the old school steak house vibe with classics like the Delmonico rib-eye and the baked Alaska, and their staff makes dining a true experience. The restaurant itself used to be a bank which escalates the ambiance to another level with their high ceilings and dark features. I highly recommend the escargot!

This place is very specific. Very traditional. Very unique. Went there with 3 more people, some of them international meat experts. 1) design is very, very nice. 2) service: amazing. impressive. like in the movies (good movies) 3) meat: they do it in Americal classic fashion: blood stakes and much much much fat. This is not Brazilian steak house! This is America. So if you like American style: this is a must! 4) Desserts: some people said one may sell his mother for the Baked Canada... well, it is good, but I'll LOVED the carrot cake! It is a size of a small car, and it melt in the mouth. Price $10. Yes, $10. Funny price. I am not sure how they making money on this (B&S - don't you dare changing prices! I am coming to have this cake again!). 5) Noise: the place has HIGH sealing! Though when I was there the place was full, I did not hear my neighbors. So good. Verdict: for particular people with particular taste. If you know it's your style: you'll LOVE it. If you like Brazil, go to Brazilian place. Bon Appetite!

Love it. Love it. Love it. Butcher and Singer is an absolutely delicious experience. Here's a run down... 1. The service is commensurate with a Classic American steakhouse. My server Ed was a true professional in every sense of the word. 2. The wedge salad is better than anyone else's. 3. The steaks are cooked perfectly. 4. The atmosphere is so elegant , yet comfortable. Everything from the decor to the background is incredible. 5. The wine list is impressive. The cocktails are somewhat imaginative twists on classics. In conclusion, this place is how a steakhouse should be. Some places seem to be trying hard to be great, while others just are great. This place simply is great.

Our last evening in Philadelphia, so we wanted something nice. Our client recommended this as one of the best Steakhouses in the area. Absolutely everything you would expect. Attentive, and personable wait staff in a 1940's styled dining room. We were all pretty stuffed so passed on starters but selected a couple of nice wines from the good(not large) wine list. Several members had the Delmonico steak, which was done to perfection. A couple of lamb chops and Entree salads. As many noted, we had to try the stuffed hash browns and baked alaska, which did not disappoint. Pricing is what you would expect from a high end steakhouse, so that being said, it was not the Greatest meal I ever had, but definitely did not disappoint.

Love this place. Awesome decor in a converted bank. Beautiful columns and crown moldings. More open than many of the other steakhouses. The foods awesome and service is always on point. One of the better steakhouses in the city.

Nibbles @ bar; the main dining room was dead on a Saturday night. Steak tartar was tasty, 4 stars. First glass ordered was a Super Tuscan... made my way to the bottom of the glass but wasn't pleased bc it wasn't as hearty and tannic as you'd expect from this blend. Told bartender I wanted something else instead bc the ST didn't deliver. He was like, "yeah, I know, right? I don't think so either, it's not that good." Well then, WTH didn't you say so when I ordered the $18/glass ST in the first place? People don't order a ST bc they want a light-bodied, fruity Pinot. Grrr. This place was ok for 1 time, but not a repeater.

We were here for restaurant week. Had the oyster rockefeller app, the filet mignon along with creamed spinach entree and chocolate tart for dessert. The oysters were good. The filet mignon had areas of seared almost sand-like crunchy salt or charred bits that distracted from the taste. The creamed spinach was okay. The chocolate tart was very good. While service was attentive and friendly the meal was just okay. I expected much more in quality considering all the 5 star reviews. I think these reviewers are just swept up by the decor and forget to actually taste their meal. Maybe they held back cause it was restaurant week. I don't know. But I'm glad we didn't pay full menu price! My filet mignon entrees at DiNardo's Seafood and The Palm were excellent. Read my reviews on them!

Came here with bf for restaurant week. For our guest course we had oyster Rockefeller which was really interesting, bc it was cooked oyster with stuffing (used to having cold raw oysters) nonetheless it was delicious. Our second course we both had 8 oz filet mignon. Now on a regular day the 8oz filet mignon costs $35 by itself, so definitely take advantage of the restaurant week which is 3 course meal for $35. For our 3rd course I had the chocolate tart and bf had bloody orange sorbet. The chocolate was so rich and with great texture. We also ordered cocktails. I had the French 75 which was perfect with the food. It's not to sweet, the ladies will like this.

I came to butcher and singer during restaurant week and ordered the filet mignon. I'm normally a ribeye or a skirt steak kind of girl. I like thinner meats because I find they taste much more flavorful and are less "chewy." So I ordered the filet mignon to give it a try. I found it to be not as juicy and a little bit dry, probably as I expected. I feel like that could be because I personally don't have a thing for filet mignon and that I have to account for the fact that we came here during restaurant week. I hope to try the restaurant again when it's not restaurant week and order a different steak to see how they make it. Overall it was still a great piece of meat but it didn't fully do it for me. The ambience was lovely and had a very Mad Men feel to it. Service was great and I look forward to coming back for another try.

I was in town for a conference and happened to visit during a terrible rainstorm. It was the type of rain that compels you to stay inside. The only problem was, there was no fridge in the room and I did not feel like putting on my Sunday's best in order to travel a few floors in the hotel and eat (Club rules suck). So, a group of us got together to dine and enjoy dinner here. What a great meal. It was worth the two block walk in the pouring rain.

The SETTING: One (1) visit here for dinner last weekend The VIBE: 4 Stars - Very nice atmosphere, décor, and noise level. Seems ideal both for business and dates. Convenient valet parking. The SERVICE: 4.5 Stars - for the life of me I can't remember her name, but the young-ish brunette waitress that helped us was pretty much perfect. We never felt rushed or upsold and she had many recommendations. The FOOD: 3 Stars - Normally I would give this a higher rating, because we pretty much enjoyed everything we tried (we split a Caesar salad, which was VERY good, a filet, which was decent, mashed potatoes [so-so], and the mushrooms and onions). The reason this gets this rating is the price. Even though we split everything (and had two cocktails each) and had no dessert, the bill was $200. For that price, I want my food to wow me.... The Bottom Line - Coming here on business or a special occasion? Have the Caesar and the Delmonico. Just in the neighborhood? Better to seek a more valuable alternative.

Been here several times, and finally felt compelled to review it. The service is just so on point when I eat at other nice (expesive) places and it doesn't stack up I always lament "we should have gone to Butcher." Even on Restaurant Week when lots of places shove you out, they treated us as valued customers, with the floor manager checking in a number of times to make sure everything was as expected. And the actual venue is pretty amazing. Super high ceilings, very ornate. The Hash browns are great, veggie sides are pretty good, and steak I've found is cooked pretty close to how they describe it (medium rare seems to vary at every place, but they do a good job of explaining what their terms mean). Definitely not cheap, but never felt disappointed any time I've been.

This time around, my steak really disappointed me. I went back for the delmonico that everyone raves about, but I was thoroughly disappointed. The steak didnt have a crust on it, and it left the meat and little chewy. It was cooked to the correct temperature inside, but somehow the outside was a little gray and rubbery. I wasnt expecting this as the filet I had prior was fantastic and had a great crust on the outside. That being said, the stuffed hash brown and baked alaska definitely lived up to the hype. I also found the special salad I believe it was to be amazing. It had all kinds of Italian meats and cheeses in it with a delicious dressing and romaine lettuce as well. The moscow mule cocktail is absolutely delicious! I will order that over and over again. Our service was fantastic as well. I had to downgrade it a star because of the steak this time. I will go back and give it another shot to see if it was a fluke, but I was pretty disappointed.

It is nice and romantic, feels like I am back in the '60s old fashioned steak houses. It is classy. They are big on the steaks and some seafood. It is located in a nice place in Philly next to other pubs. The waiters are knowledgeable about the menu. Overall nothing big really stands out great service though.

A cut above the rest. Butcher and Singer provides decadence to the simple American steak house. The menu is traditional American with a major emphasis on meat. Carnivores rejoice because this is where you want to be.... well if you have the money to blow or you're thinking of a deal for restaurant week. Hey, this place has the bone in filets, t-bones, etc. cooked to how you want it. They also have amazing sides such as the mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. And those mashed potatoes are just so incredibly smooth, buttery, and fluffy. However, this restaurant doesn't do their steak tartare just right. I prefer a raw egg yolk to be on top to be mixed it's what the French would have wanted. Overall Butcher and Singer do a lot of things right. Definitely a happy fatass camper over here. There aren't too many steak places (if you say cheesesteak counts... no) to eat at in Philly but this one definitely hits the spot.

My fiance and I went here on 12/27/14. We split the tomato and roguefort salad. I had the delmontico, and she had the filet. The steaks were cooked to the right temp, and the service was excellent. The waiter brought us a baked alaska on the house since we were there to celebrate our engagement! Some of the best steaks in town!

** This review is for lunch only ** So I'm on a neverending quest to find the best burger in Philadelphia... nay, the WORLD! But I'm starting with Philly. So Butcher and Singer has this burger that is supposed to be out of this world. Problem is they only offer it at lunch time and I rarely find myself in Center City at lunchtime hours. Luckily, the BS holiday of Columbus Day (sorry Italians) gave my husband and I the chance to finally check it out. I've never been in Butcher and Singer, but the decor/service is pretty stereotypical steakhouse. I'm always nervous about ordering the cheapest thing on the menu at a higher end place. I always feel like I'm all "I'm-too-cheap-to-order-a-normal-priced-item-on-this-menu-so-I'll-have-a-side-salad-and-a-water". Fortunately, our waiter didn't give us any dirty looks for getting the el cheapo item. While we are talking about being an el cheapo, can we talk about how great a deal the burger is here? It's like 11-12 bucks for a massive burger and a mound of fries (or side salad) with it. What a great deal! The burger itself was very good. It didn't follow the current burger trend of having 15 different obscure toppings on it, but what it did have on it was tasty and fresh. I got a side salad and my husband got the fries and we shared. I thought the salad was super delicious- I could have eaten that on its own. I wasn't blown away by the fries- I'd probably save the calories and get a salad. And then stop at 500 degrees for their truffle fries on the walk home instead. Overall, Butcher and Singer is a great spot for a nice lunch in Center City. If you are looking for a higher end experience and are on a beer budget, come here for the burger- you won't regret it!

I don't know of a better steak anywhere. Been here twice, and also love the transformation of this interior of a bank into a restaurant. I saw a swordfish chop on another plate and I have to order that next time. The joint is enormously popular and also enormously expensive, but it does this genre about as well as could be done. I would add that I have never been disappointed by any Stephen Starr establishment and welcome his group's expansion to Washington and Florida.

    (4)
  • Jason H.

Butcher & Singer is a Stephen Starr outpost occupying the former Striped Bass space. The decor is swanky 1940's style, and seems like something you'd see in LA or New York, with celebrities sitting at every other table...maybe Frank and Dean at the bar. It's a big place, and is clearly an old-school steakhouse that has the usual suspects of beef cuts, pork chops, lobster tails, and seafood platter towers. They also have some dishes that you don't see all that often: steak tartare, shrimp and crab louie, stuffed hash browns, creamed spinach, and a baked Alaska dessert. They used to have lobster thermidor on the menu, which I've never seen anywhere else. The food is very good and the service top-notch. Philadelphia has plenty of good steakhouses, but in terms of atmosphere, I think Butcher and Singer and Barclay Prime are two of the best.

Prix fixe menu review: I understand fully rating a restaurant upon a prix fixe menu is foolish. Expectations are to be adjusted, like meeting a first date after looking at their facebook profiles. Nonetheless, here it is. The decor is as described, mad men-ish and swanky, but overall fairly cramped. No appreciable bar area worth mentioning. However, given its location, I suppose this can be excused. Service is A + as expected. Crabcake appetizer was a bit creamy. Some may love this type of crabcake, however. It was paired with an apple slaw that was a nice counter. Wine and drink menus were extensive. Beer menu was underwhelming. Before you judge me for ordering beer at a steakhouse, some people just don't like red wine. Also, for every food offering, there is a beer that pairs well. Moving on to the 8 oz filet. A good, high end quality steak. Nothing more, nothing less. Cooked appropriately, finished completely. Stuffed hashbrowns were interesting, savory, salty. some people swore by it. I definitely enjoyed it, but really was just jonesing for some good mashed. Creamed spinach and mushrooms also met expectations. I would certainly return in a non prix fixe setting, and re-judge appropriately. However, judging a steak-centered restaurant by their filet is totally justifiable in my opinion, therefore, 3 stars it is!

If you are looking for a venue for a small party, this is the place. We had our "wedding reception" here after a small courthouse marriage. With 9 people, the service was completely flawless. The drinks were never empty, all questions about the dishes answered, and all of the meals came out quickly (and together). The staff was very friendly and all gave best wishes to us, even wait staff that wasn't assigned to our table. We chose B&S because they have a Chef's Table rather than a private room, so we got the ambiance of the restaurant with the added privacy. The shellfish platter appetizer was perfect in its simplicity, the steaks were cooked to perfection, and the drinks were on point (I tried several of their signature drinks, Bee's Knees was my personal favorite). The absolute best part of the experience was the cake. Wedding cake is always important and they did not fail us. We ordered a carrot cake, and it ended up being absolutely perfect. Not too sweet, dense cream cheese icing. They even called me the week before to find out which cake toppers we had so they knew how to reinforce the top so they didn't sink. I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. They have my business for life!

We made reservations 6 weeks ahead of time and were excited to try yet another Starr restaurant. After waiting for 30 minutes the hostess informed us that she wouldn't be seating us at a booth. She indicated that they planned to use them to seat larger parties unless we wanted to wait until 10:30pm. Our reservations were set for 8:30pm, so this was not an option. After we sat, we then watched the hostess seat multiple couples in larger tables, including one right in front of us. This was very disappointing. We had a phenomenal server named Zack. We ordered the Oysters Rockefeller, which we were told were new to the menu. For the first time, I actually didn't/couldn't finish something I ordered at a restaurant. They were extremely salty and probably need some tweaking. We also ordered the Escargot and Caesar salad. Both were great. The entrée, Zack offered to do a Delmonico and Dry Aged Porterhouse split for two. This was the best of both worlds. I wish the steaks were done a bit more as they didn't come out with my understanding of the correct temperature we had ordered. I'd highly recommend the stuffed hash browns and creamed spinach sides. For a $300+ dollar meal it missed the mark by far. The ambience/wait staff were phenomenal but would definitely recommend dining here during restaurant week as the meal didn't reflect the cost. This is the first time I've written a Yelp review as I've never felt compelled until this experience.

This restaurant is excellent. You'll need to make reservations well before hand unless you want to eat at 9PM. You'll need reservations even on a day in the middle of the week. All the wait staff is extremely professional and attentive. This level of professionalism is rare. There is a coat check. It is expensive here but you get what you pay for. I dropped thirty dollars on a martini and Manhattan while waiting for a table to open up. My wife and I got two surf and turf plates ($75 a piece) with a desert and couple glasses of wine the bill ran up to $250. I have no problem paying that kind of money for an excellent dinning experience. The restaurant itself is in an old bank so it has high roofs and large marble columns. The music wasn't too loud but the din of everyone talking was enough where you needed to raise your voice slightly to be heard. The dress is casual but I would not have worn jeans had I known what this place is like. I would love to eat here again next time I'm in town

I came here tonight for my son's 15th birthday. We are avid carnivores and have high standards for steak. As New Yorkers, we are pretty biased on our porterhouse and strips because we love Our NY hot spots. Anyhoo- everything was delicious- the ambiance, service, food, u name it! Perfect- it was like I was back in NYC. Try the porterhouse for 2, butcher salad and baked Alaska. The spinach and potatoes were not bad as well. Perfect place for a group to unwind as well.

This is the closest to Five Stars anywhere in Pennsylvania has come. The fine folks over at Holt's Cigars pointed us over this way, and, funny enough, while eating dinner, a friend from Penn State called me up to recommend this place. It was a great as everyone said. The service at the bar was exquisite. I had an extra dirty, extra dry Hendrick's martini, and Kristi had a 10 Cane and Diet while we got some excellent recommendations from the very friendly, but not overly so, bar tender. Despite the fact that I was wearing shorts, we were seated at an awesome table for a Saturday night. Our server was fantastic and applauded our choice to go steak-steak for appetizers and main courses. We started with the steak tartare. It came out as some of the most perfectly colored raw beef I've ever had the satisfaction of laying my eyes on. It was delicately blended with oil, capers, and all of the regular tartare accoutrement. It was buttery, without being greasy, and has such a subtle, complex flavor. For our main course, we went with a nice, thick Delmonico (Side Note: I really hate this designation. I promise I won't judge you for calling it a ribeye!), and Kristi had the 8 oz. filet mignon. Here's the money shot: they do au poivre! They COVER those bad boys in cracked black peppercorns and their au poivre sauce is fantastic; especially because they don't bitch out on the capers. We accompanied this with what is really the only thing I can complain about from the whole meal, two glasses of Duckhorn Vineyards Decoy for $19 a pop. Real talk? That's Paraduxx prices (but more real talk: no one's selling Paraduxx by the glass). For sides, we had the stuffed hash browns which were big enough for a whole table of people. The hash browns are crispy on the outside and crammed with potatoes, onions, and sour cream on the inside; it's a latke on steroids. We also had some pretty tasty creamed spinach, but STUFFED HASH BROWN. God help me if I didn't ravage its leftovers some hours later drunk in our hotel room. I hated the fact that I couldn't stomach dessert here, but I WILL BE BACK. The decor, atmosphere, and most importantly, service was exquisite; the food was fantastic; the drinks were pricey but excellent. I cannot recommend this place enough. This is the one time I've eaten steak in PA, and not wanted to stab the chef in the throat with the bone. It's phenomenal.

5 stars for atmosphere reflecting a 1940's fancy restaurant, but food wasn't all there. The culprit? Salt! Someone working over there please tell your chefs not to rely on salt so much! It was almost to the point of the food being inedible, and that's counting both steaks, the mushrooms and onions to go on top, and absolutely the fries. My friend and I both couldn't believe how the food ended up for such a popular spot.

Loved this place! Best dining room in Philadelphia, it's gorgeous. Super attentive staff, our waiter was excellent, extremely knowledgable, friendly and professional. Lovely drinks, extensive wine list. Great steaks, fantastic sides... Can't praise this place enough. Barclay prime still wins when it comes to the actual steaks (hence the 4 stars not 5) but in all other aspects this place is fantastic. Plus the steaks are a very close second.

For my 30th bday - the GF decided to take me to Butcher and Singer. All I asked for dinner was a steakhouse - and she delivered. 5 stars all around. The only hiccup? The fact that the hostess made us wait 15 min's for our table (we were 15 min early). There were plenty of tables open? We came at prime time? What the dealyo? We're not in NYC where we have to act snooty (I'm a NYer FYI so there's actually some self deprecation there). In any case ... the night went uphill from there. And it all starts with service (shout out to Bill!). Amazing, amazing. Everything you expect from a restaurant where you pay top dollar for steak is what you get. Constantly replenished silverware - respectful, attentive service without being overbearing ... and you'll see what I'm talking about at the end of this review. The ambience was very Mad Men - old school. I liked the mirrors on the top of the cavernous (though not on the scale of Del Frisco's) dining room. Made the room seem even more expansive. On to the food however ... We started with the tomatoes and roquefort for the GF and crabcake for me. The tomatoes and roquefort should have been named tomatoes/roquefort/onions since there were a beeeevy of onions (keep in mind the menu does not have any descriptions so feel free to ask your server)! I personally hate raw onions, but they clearly tempered their onions in some water so it didn't have that abhorrent bite that accompanies raw onions. In any case, the GF enjoyed it enough - just not what she expected. My crabcake was very good - no filler - just pure crab goodness. Came with a julienned bunch of Granny smith-like apples - quite delicious. For mains - the GF had the 8 oz filet medium - delicious. Had that pure beef taste that comes with a filet. She enjoyed it. I went with the 18 oz Delmonico (read: rib-eye). Medium. Delicious. Perfect pink center. Nice salty crust on the outside. Delicious rib-eye cap. Even I couldn't finish this monster. Sides: Hashed browns and mushrooms/onions. The Hashed browns came stuffed with diced potatoes and sour cream. It was a huge hub-cap sized plate for a side. It could have done with some cheese or something that tempered the starch. The mushrooms and onions - they were decent ... the balsamic onions were delicious, and there were a variety of mushrooms in there - including oyster I believe. Nothing too special, but still quite good. Most of this was taken home - to make a delicious dinner the next day. Now since it was my 30th Bday ... our server Bill decided to bring over a Baked Alaska, which we were coincidentally going to order. Clearly the service staff here goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome. It was definitely a nice touch - along with the candle (which I noticed kept blowing out so he kept going back to light it ... talk about perseverance!). Great dinner - we'll be back for sure. And it all starts with the service.

Loved Butcher & Singer - awesome steaks! The NY Strip was thick, gorgeously seared and shimmering golden with butter and the filet was perfect as well. The stuffed hash browns are a must - ate every morsel. The ambience is dark, rich and cozy. The service was impeccable from the moment we were greeted to the very end. Highly recommend. Only caveat - Patron on the rocks was $19 - a bit steep. All other prices were very reasonable.

Food is great. Butternut squash soup, filet, mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were incredible! So is the creamed spinach. Drew is the best server and Amy is so nice. Great date night!

The steak alone makes this place a 5-Star occasion. Seriously. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to the Delmonico at least once in your time in Philly. Heck, if you're visiting at least consider it. It might be the best steak I've ever had (the Delmonico). I apologize if some people who are more cultured in the world of steak take that as an offense, but I was literally blown away. With the sides, they were fantastic. The hash browns with the stuffing inside was just insane. It was so heavy though that I didn't eat that much...I wanted to get my money's worth on the steak. (By the way, this is a premiere steak house...expect to pay a pretty penny). We finished our meal with the Baked Alaska. Also I was extremely impressed with it. Overall, it was a great experience. We are not the type of people to frequent these types of places, as we're more casual. However, it was very worth it. Our server was great. He was friendly and on-point; what you SHOULD expect from a top-notch place. PS - The decor is very mid-century - think "Mad Men". Very cool. It's worth it to dress a little nicer when going. It adds to the whole experience.

what a great evening! started off with martinis at the bar (which were absolutely perfect). between the 4 of us we ordered asparagus, stuffed hash brown, brussel sprouts, baked potato, new york strip, filet and swordfish. everything was perfectly flavored and the service was great. this is a must go to spot.

When it comes to good steak, everyone has to put their two cents in as to where you can find the best piece of meat for the best price at the best location. Not typically being a fan of red meat, I was surprised to find I was hankering for some recently. When I suggested Butcher & Singer as a dining spot, all I had to hear in response was "fried oysters" and I was already hailing the cab. We split the Delmonico, and I must say, I have a newfound respect for steak snobs. This was decadent and cooked perfectly. The ambiance is that of one of the finest restaurants I've been to in Philadelphia. Very old-school, yuppy charm and top tier service. This is a special occasion type of place where I can confidently say I doubt to ever meet a dirty martini I don't like.

Price - $$$$ (High End) Taste - Steak speciality Good: Dry Porterhouse My girlfriend and I came here couple times. But I am going to common on their restaurant week menu today. Most people came to Butcher & Singer for their steak, so to us. The restaurant week offers $35 three course dinner with entry choice of Filet Mignon, chicken and Trout. I personally favor the filet. The sea salt with filet just match the right amount for medium. The trout has good portion and nicely cooked. Overall the three course meal has fair quality for Butcher & Singer. They didn't reduce portion or quality even for restaurant week. Furthermore, the appetizer and desserts are just more conventional compare to the entree. You can find better chocolate cake in Maxbrenner or better shrimp cocktail at Ocean Prime. So just focus on your entree when you dine at Butcher & Singer during restaurant week. Some people paid difference to upgrade their entree to Dry Porterhouse. I am not sure how that works but the table next to me did that way. I tried either Filet Mignon and Dry Porterhouse. Both are worth to try.

I had a party of 6 with reservations a few nights ago at B&S. The place is gorgeous! The Good: 1 Best Manhattan drink i ever had-hands down, and they have a bunch of variety's on said drink! 2 The waiter was informative, the bread was warm. 3. The meat in this place is outstanding, All six of us enjoyed every bite. I ate slow just so every time I looked at my plate i had more...The Lamb Mutton was also very good...not funky like it can be all to often... obviously prepared by an artist. The Bad: 1 Although the vegetables were prepared very ordinary, they were good enough, but the waiter asked if we wanted to go family style on the veggies, and we all nodded yes please. What we got were two cereal bowl sized portions of Brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes that would have barely fed my Grandmother, and definitely not (6) adults...The mashed potatoes had no identity at all, they were just mashed potatoes for better or worse, and not enough of them mashed obviously. The salad that I ordered was the butcher salad, and although the ingredients went together like a fine tuned orchestra, the dressing tasted like it can from a bottle! In closing, this would have been a 5 star rating if the veggies were treated with a bit more love, and a bigger ladle. I had to ask for more bread, after the tasty but small roll was gone with the Manhattan...For the amount of the bill that showed up for six and compared with what we got in return, it was not 5 start event. With that said if they repaired the aforementioned items it would be worth the asking price.

My girlfriend splurged for my birthday, and I was definitely not disappointed. Butcher and Singer serves up incredible food and drinks, and you feel transported into an early Mad Men episode. My steak was absolutely delicious, and the old fashioned and Moscow mule (made from scratch with homemade ginger beer) were incredible as well. I definitely hope to come back someday. There's no better place in Philadelphia to feel like Don Draper for an evening...

My beau and I came here for a fancy dinner out. We both got the single porterhouse, which is dry aged for roughly a month. I got medium+, which was cooked perfectly to my liking. It was delicious and not to mention... HUGE! Unfortunately my boyfriends porterhouse came out a tad bit too cooked. He ordered a medium rare and ended up getting something more cooked than medium. After telling the restaurant manager, he was very accommodating and made sure we were satisfied with our meal. Great steaks, great service and amazing baked Alaska!

I came here for lunch since I was wandering around Center City and was hankering for a good burger. When I walked in, I knew immediately I was under-dressed. I wondered if they would still seat me, and they did! You walk in, and it just looks like a swanky joint with its dark reds and brown interior design. They did seat me off to this side section and I watched other well-dressed diners enjoy lunch in the central dining area while everyone else in jeans was seated in my section. ha....... The Butcher burger had English cheddar cheese and fried onions on top. It also came with some sort of house sauce. I was going to order french fries on the side but the waiter informed me that the burger came with fries! sweet! I asked for my burger medium-well and the waiter raised his eyebrows as if to say, "really? come on!" so I immediately changed my order to medium and he looked more pleased. I was very pleased to see the cook on this burger. Nice and pink on the inside and a bit firm. The meat quality was great and very well seasoned. I especially liked the crispy fries. There was so much, I couldn't finish. I was very pleased with this meal and mental note: don't wear jeans into a steakhouse!

There are no words for Butcher & Singer. We first came here for my holiday party and came back to celebrate the end of our first trimester. The service is phenomenal. It's like taking a step back in time (very Mad Men). The waiters have on white jackets with bow ties and black slacks. Your water is constantly refilled (so's the bread). The food... oh the food. This go 'round I had the chilean sea bass served on top of a truffled vanilla sauce and mushroom trio. ..................................................... That's me drooling. The fish was PERFECT. The sauce decadent, slightly sweet, slightly savory. We split asparagus and the baked potato as sides (the potato was MASSIVE but so yum). My husband had the lamb chops. They're the lamb chops we hold others up against. We haven't had a lamb chop nearly as delicious since. And for dessert? Chocolate fudge cake. I died and went to heaven.

My hubby and I had dinner and drinks at Butcher and Singer to celebrate our anniversary. We were able to make reservations easily online and when we arrived, were seated promptly. We treated ourselves to a feast of feasts! We started with 1/2 dozen oysters and drinks. The oysters were very fresh and good...no complaints there. The drinks were also very good. They have a decent selection of signature cocktails and an extensive bar. We then moved onto the onion soup which was excellent...perfect! The escargot was also very delicious...just the right amount of garlic. Finally we moved onto our main entree. Given all the other food we had already ordered, we decided to share a porterhouse for 1 with a side of stuffed hash browns and brussels sprouts. The brussel sprouts left something to be desired...really nothing special, but the stuffed hash browns were really good. I definitely recommend those as they're something unique to B&S. And unfortunately the porterhouse was not really to our liking which is why this review is 4 stars. The meat was cooked to perfection but the seasionings that they used on the steak were not good. Each of us only took a couple bites of the steak because of it. I know B&S is known for their steaks, but if we were to return, we'd order something else on the menu or specifically ask that they skip the seasonings. Overall, most of our food was delicious and the service was on top of things. We had a very enjoyable dinner and left completely stuffed.

Took my boyfriend here as a surprise for his 28th birthday. We had an amazing experience from start to finish. I've never heard him say "mmmm" throughout an entire meal before! We started with drinks at the bar which were lovely. The atmosphere was dark and romantic and the bartender was very attentive. After about an hour at the bar, the hostess came up to me to let me know our table was ready. Once at the table, the waitress explained the menu to us since it was our first time dining. We started with the Calamari appetizer which was the best calamari we had both ever had, with peppers and onions as well. Delicious. They brought bread and churned butter to the table. I could have been done after both of those! We each had a salad which was cold and refreshing on cold plates. Next time, I would maybe skip this course but it was still amazing. For steak, I had the 8 oz. Filet which I couldn't even finish. It was cooked and seasoned perfectly. My boyfriend got the Delmonico which he said was the best steak he's ever had. It was amazing. We shared the mashed potatoes and asparagus which were perfect sides to our main course. We finished the meal with Cappuccinos because we were both too full for anything else. All in all, it was a perfect meal! This place is amazing for a special occasion, you feel special the entire time you are in the restaurant. I would highly recommend Butcher and Singer and can't wait to go back again!

Great restaurant week caption. Shrimp cocktail was great. Large sized shrimp! Ceasar salad was decent. Petit filet was amazing. Cooked to perfection. Well seasoned. You could tell it was a good piece of meat. Creamed spinach was delicious. Mashed potatoes just okay. Chocolate cake was not my favorite. It was an okay cake- nothing memorable. Coconut tart was a much better dessert. Service was good. Decor is old school 1940s which is neat. Would return for a steak!

Maybe it's the fact that I had an amazingly memorable second date here with my wonderful boyfriend but this place was great. Service was top notch and the food was enjoyable. We went near closing time so it wasn't busy and we had a spectacular time.

Seems like 5pm on Monday is the best time to go there. lol We got in right the way, the food was out it less then 15 minutes. The only complaints are that steak temperature wasn't right ( both ) and all the sides were waaaaaay over-salted.

I love Butcher and Singer, and look forward to visiting the restaurant when I come to Philadelphia. The ambience is classic, yet a bit more modern than a traditional steak house. This gives the place visual interest and makes it feel new and exciting. I met friends here for dinner and we had drinks at the bar while waiting a few minutes for our table. I had a dirty martini on a whim, and it was delicious! As a table, we tried a variety of things. I absolutely love the onion soup. It was decadent, but not too too heavy. The tomato and roquefort salad was delicious, and the creaminess of the roquefort paired nicely with the crunch of the ripe, bright red tomatoes. I had a filet, and it was perfectly cooked to medium with a nice char-not buttery, not greasy. Thank goodness. The fries, stuffed hashed browns, mushrooms & onions, and brussels sprouts were fantastic as well. I would recommend getting a few of these options to go with your filet! Enjoy!

We went to Butcher and Singer during Center City Restaurant Week for lunch. I'm giving them two stars for food and treatment. Service was okay. The menu included: -- 1st course: Choice of a potato leeks soup, salad and oyster something (Rockefeller?) -- 2nd course: Choice of burger, salad and a chicken sandwich -- 3rd course: Choice of blood orange sorbet, bread pudding and one other dessert I chose the soup, burger and sorbet. The service was ok. A little forced. I kept expecting our server to click her heels together. I don't recall the server giving us her name or else I would've used it. I liked the guy who served our food. He was cute and came across a bit more authentic. He would've made a better server, in my opinion. The potato leeks soup tasted just ok. It lacked some flavor. I only took two bites from the burger. It came with french fries, which were tasty. By now, we were feeling like the restaurant wanted to free up our table for another seating. They were expecting more than 300 covers for lunch. As we picked at our entrees, the bus person came by to ask if we were still eating. Yes. The manager came by to ask if everything was ok. Yes. The server came by to ask if we were still working and if everything was ok. Yes. (Hence the two stars.) I asked them to wrap up my burger to go so that we can move on to the third course and leave. The sorbet was good. Really sweet, though. I'm not interested in eating there again.

After mulling over a couple of restaurants my husband and I decided to go here for our anniversary dinner and man are we glad we did. Hands down the best dinner I have ever had! Highly recommend the crab cake appetizer. Had the delmonico steak and fried shrimp, stuffed hash browns and creamed spinach. Even the butter here is phenomenal. Everything was delish! Definitely upscale so dress accordingly. They even gave us a complimentary dessert for the occasion. The only weird thing was the bathroom was so plain compared to the rest of the place. Lovely experience all around and would give them ten stars if I could! If you're confused about where to go for a special occasion stop looking cause this is the place!

    Amazing "Dry Aged Porterhouse" steak!!

  • Jeff F.

Pricey yes, but as good as any steak I've had in a top quality steakhouse. I took my Mom out for a night on the town and we shared the aged Porterhouse for two, medium rare. It was a delectable, tender piece of meat. The creamed spinach side was excellent, though a bit on the small side when they say that the sides are "enough for two". Overall ambiance was excellent, though we were seated near the kitchen which wasn't great. But we were 45 minutes late for our reservation on a Saturday night and still got seated, so that made up for it!

I will start by saying we have always had a great evening at Starr restaurants. This however is another story. I will start with the hostess, who told us it would be a few minutes before our table was ready. No big deal as we informed her we would head to the bar for a cocktail. We placed an order for drinks, only to be interrupted by the hostess who stated that our table was ready. I informed her that we ordered cocktails and would be just a minute. Now this is a first, she looked at us and said sorry, although we do not look busy now, we have to adhere to the reservation time and you cannot sit at the bar and wait for a drink. REALLY! OK, so we informed the bartender of the change of plans. We are then walked over to a table in the upper left hand side of the room, but were told the chairs and couch we were to sit in cannot be moved out for us to fit since the adjoining tables were touching the backs of the chairs. We reluctantly sat down and waited a few minutes for our server Ricky to come over. He happened to be the only bright spot of the evening. We asked him if the small table across from us was his and after he relied yes, we asked to be moved. He had to go check with the hostess if that was OK, and came back and said yes. When we asked him why the tables were so close together, he responded by saying that for Valentine's weekend that they squeeze in as many additional tables as they can. Needless to say, after ordering our first cocktails, we waited approx 15 minutes for them. Had we stayed at the bar for our original order we would have enjoyed them without the wait. Now for the food. While my wife was looking forward to surf and turf and I settled on a dry aged porterhouse with Oscar topping, we also had a shrimp cocktail and oysters. Nothing special by any means. The wedge salad was actually our high point and for $13 for 1/4 head of iceberg, just a tad overpriced. When the entree's came out, they looked wonderful. The lobster tail was a nice size. The filet was raw, cold, raw center not the slightest bit warmed or cooked. We asked for it to be redone and within 2 minutes the manager brought it back over. He barely apologized as he slid it back onto my wife's plate. While the outer was now char coaled, the meat itself was still raw. However, the manager never made eye contact, now did he come over to see why the steak remained untouched. The porter house was nothing special and for the price was way too much. We have had better steaks at many steak houses and lower budget restaurants. SO, this magical evening that should have been came with a $300 bill, no apologies whatsoever, and leaving us pretty disgusted that we wasted our time and money in this place. So not the experience we thought we would have!!!!

Excellent Butcher Salad. Perfectly cooked filet. Friendly and timely service. 4 stars. Remember that $6 burger throwdown happening in Philadelphia a couple years ago? Yeah, they don't do that any more but Butcher and Singer is producing fantastic burgers at sub-stratospheric prices. If you're not feeling mass quantities of meat, the Butcher salad is fantastic and very filling. You're able to add chicken, filet, or shrimp as you wish, though it does make the price less reasonable for a salad. Service is excellent, decor is ornate. Pretty much what you've come to expect from a decent Starr restaurant. Lunchtime did seem under-staffed with waiters but we also went during a minor snowstorm so not the standard day. Admittedly, this isn't my favorite burger in the city, but it's surely worth the trip. Meat meets my mouthwatering mores. (stretching for this one, I know) Cheers.

This was my first time at Butcher & Singer and I was very satisfied. Overall, amazing amazing steak, and that's the most important factor for me which is why it is getting 4 stars instead of 3. The bar isn't exactly user friendly for eating. Not saying in a negative way since most patrons don't eat at the rather small, quaint bar, however there is about an 8 inch bar edge molding that puts the plate itself significantly further away than you would want. You have two options when you eat at the bar. Either you hope your food doesn't drip on you or fall on the molding, inevitably falling on you, or you stretch your vertebrae in a giraffe-like fashion to properly eat over the plate. Steak? No problem. Brussel sprouts? I took my life in my hands with every bite. The wine list is tremendously overpriced and I'll just be honest about that. As an example, $90 for half bottle of Duckhorn Merlot, $165 for the full bottle. The going rate for this bottle in every single steakhouse that I have been to has never topped $100. $10 less for a half bottle? Laughable. Sorry, I know I'm being blunt, but that is laughable. Come to think of it, alcohol in general was very expensive. I always take a look at how expensive the scotch list is, wines by the glass, etc. I only had a glass of wine, and it was $15 for a bottle that I know can be purchased for $9. I had a side of the brussel sprouts. They were good, but definitely over salted, and I do enjoy dishes properly salted. There was a fair amount of bacon in them, so I think any additional seasoning was definitely not necessary. Lastly, I had the Delmonico, cooked perfectly to med-rare. Top 5 steaks easily. This steak is prime, but not aged. It was bursting with flavor, it was perfectly seasoned, and when i say perfect, i mean spot on perfect. It needs nothing. To get very technical, I'd say 95% of the crust of the steak (top, bottom, sides included) was perfectly charred. I have never inspected a steak as closely as I did this. Literally, they charred it right to the point where you had this beautifully textured, golden, dark brown bark that gave nothing short of an amazing salty, rich, perfect bite of steak. For $44, it was a steal. The other 5% of the crust was actually charred too much, but luckily, the marbling along the cap of the rib-eye easily saved those two bites from being the only negative thing I could possible fathom on that steak. I will definitely come back again. That steak was mesmerizing. Its just a shame that the other half of the dinner (wine) is going to cost you a lot more than what its worth.

I just love butcher and singer. The decor was really swanky and kinda retro. I felt like I was eating at a old timey bank building haha. Service was great :) I had the NY strip steak and it was delicious! It was juicy and kinda had a slightly crispy outside but didn't taste burnt at all. Intense flavor. The mashed potato side was good but I think I've had better at some other restaurants. For dessert, i had the baked alaska... So good! Overall, it was a wonderful experience. However, it's really pricey :\

After being to Butcher and Singer and Barclay Prime, I'm comfortable to say that while Barclay Prime's food is to die for, Butcher and Singer's service and ambience are to die for. A great friend of mine and I came here as a "we survived the sophomore slump" celebratory dinner. We both love steak and going to steak houses. As it almost seemed meant to be, I originally booked for a French restaurant, but for some reason, it didn't go through on Yelp. I booked this place 15 min before our reservation as we checked Barbuzzo's, Chifa, Fogo de Chao (the wait was almost 3 hours!), and as it turned out, Butcher and Singer popped up. What I had: Crab cake - delicious, fresh, nicely crisped on the outside, creamy on the inside. I'm still thinking about the crab cake, and it's been almost two months! New York Strip - I wasn't really fond of porterhouse cuts to begin with, but after being impressed with how amazing the ambience turned out, I figured I should try my luck. To my disappointment, it was a bit overcooked (I asked for medium), definitely over-seasoned, and uncomfortably salty, and slightly burnt on the sides. Creamed Spinach side - well, creamy and has a spinach, irony aftertaste. Good portion, a little bit heavy on the cream Mushroom & onion side - Savory, fresh-tasting, helped me with my steak a lot as this helped balance the somewhat over-seasoned taste of the steak. Coffee - I loved the ambience, so to stay here longer, we agreed on coffee as our "dessert." Had a nice conversation as always over coffee! Ambience: To die for. I love old, classic movies. I loved learning and reading about the Golden Age of Hollywood, and having lived in LA until I came to Philly for college, every part of the old Hollywood dining theme was fantastic. The chandelier was beautiful. The music was to die for. I felt like a weird combination of Gene Kelly and Julie Andrews coming into the restaurant ever so happy with a red umbrella. Dimly lighted, and appropriately so. The restaurant was nearly full, and the ambient noise was spot on - not so loud like a Brazillian steakhouse, and not so quiet like a fine French place. In all, I LOVED THE ENTIRE THEME! Thank you for this unique opportunity. Service: Given our last-minute circumstances, we were originally seated at a four person table for the two of us on the side of the restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised that we could switch to a two-person table overlooking the bottom tier of the restaurant, at, I would say, my favorite part of the restaurant after asking the waiter.

The best steak (NY Strip) I've ever had. Crisp on outside, soft and moist inside. Can't be better. Period.

I thought they were overrated, but my friends insist it was just a bad chef/experience. Steaks were rarer than we asked for, and the delmonicos was so thick that it was difficult to cut through. I've heard the whipped/mashed potatoes are the best around, so maybe I'll come back for those. Excellent service, comfy booths, and quiet.

The misses: "I wonder what a $42 steak tastes like..." Me: "It tastes like an $8 steak." After eating here, I may have to rethink that assessment. We were here for a friends bday dinner a few weeks ago and I can honestly say that it was the best steak I've ever eaten. I had to knock half a star off of this place because of the prices, and service was SLOOOOOOOOW, but seriously, the steak was AMAZING. The side dishes of stuffed hash browns, string beans, creamed spinach, etc, all went over well and the appetizers of oysters, calimari, etc all hit the spot as well. The restaurant itself was standard mahogany, bartenders in white jackets and bow ties, dim lights, and what not, but it was all still very elegant. The servers were present without being obtrusive and my water glass never got below half empty. Seriously, they did almost everything right. Its a steakhouse, and the STEAK (12 oz filet mignon) was absolutely PERFECT. I know, I know....I'm drooling all over this place, but no 5 star review. I just have a hard time giving my highest rating to a place where a steak (albeit a delicious, perfectly cooked steak) will cost you more than an entire meal somewhere else. Fogo De Chao is $50 for ALL YOU CAN EAT of various succulent meats and salad bar, served with actually more pomp and ceremony. It doesn't help that Butcher and Singer seriously took over an hour to get our orders out, but at least what we waited for was stunningly good. Its an awesome steak house, but so is Mortons, and they are virtually indistinguishable from one another. Its a damn good steak, but its a damn bit expensive. I think the CHEAPEST steak on the menu was somewhere in the neighborhood of $37 dollars. My bill for a steak and a few shared sides (split up between about 8 of us) and a glass of wine was over $100. I would, every day of the week, recommend you do Fogos instead of this place, but if you were dead set on going here, I wouldn't talk you out of it. You will enjoy your meal, you'll just pay out the nose for it.

Came here for restaurant week lunch. Well worth it!!!! Our waiter was super helpful. I had the oysters, the burger, and the blood orange serbet. Food came out relatively fast. The oysters came in 3 half shelves. They were really tasty, but I wish there was more!!!!! The burger was really delicious. Portion size was huge and tons of fries if you like those. The burger wad very juicy and bursting with flavors, but I wish it was cooked a little longer. Mine was border line medium rare and rare and I wanted medium... the orange sorbet was very flavorful. Overall goo restaurant tp go too. Next time ill head here for some of their steak.

The food and the service were both excellent. I expected no disappointments, given the atmosphere and the price, and I got was I expected. They made me a perfect Manhattan and my wife was totally satisfied with the martini that she ordered. I was here with 7 people, so we were able tried several of the appetizers and sides. Everything was delicious. The stuffed hash browns are great, they're very rich though and pretty large, one is definitely enough for 2-3 people I had the Delmonico steak and my wife had the porterhouse. Both were delicious and cooked perfectly. We were too full to try desert but we'll be going back soon to check out the baked Alaska. Butcher and Singer isn't cheap, but you get what you pay for.

I brought my girlfriend here this past Saturday night for dinner. We are frequent guests of the Capital Grille, but I wanted to take her somewhere different. If you have never been to Butcher & Singer you should make it a point to go. The prohibition era theme really sets this place apart. When you walk in, the first thing you notice are the high ceilings. The décor is very dark, with candles on the tables. The staff are dressed in black tuxedo style jackets that adds to the feel. The drink menu has quite a few old school choices, as well as a decent beer selection. We started off with the calamari. It had a good flavor, with just a little too much batter for my taste. The dipping sauce was good, but it could have used a little more spice for my taste. We split the porterhouse for two, ordered medium rare. The steak was perfect. It had a nice char on the outside, and was so tender; you barely needed the knife to cut it. We ordered the stuffed hash browns for our side dish and they were excellent as well. Just a hint of sour cream in there. For dessert we split the chocolate cake, and that was excellent as well. I feel that this is a great place to come for a more romantic dinner, compared to the Capital Grille, where people go to be seen. Another great Starr restaurant.

It was truly one of those times when expectations were exceeded. Great single malt to start followed by steak tartar. Blue cheese with tomato slices was highlighted by great tomatoes - in March!! Porterhouse for one was perfect medium rare. The hash browns were as great as others have already said. No room for dessert.

I treated my Mother to dinner here in 2010. Getting around to reviewing it now. Setting is cozy and dedicated to recreating the refined simplicity of a bygone era. She said her steak was delicious - commenting specifically that she enjoyed the "flavor" of the meat. Not a steak eater, I don't know what this means, but it seemed important to her. I had the onion and tomato salad with blue cheese as my meal. There's plenty of it. The onions were sweet, the tomatoes juicy and the creamy blue cheese pulled it all together perfectly. We shared the creamed spinach. This was a particularly cheesy version, and thickened as it cooled. It was tasty, but I prefer a preparation that is more creamy, less viscous, so I can taste the spinach, not cheese. I've eaten at Del Friscos. I prefer it here. I like the quiet atmosphere. It seems more respectable.

I am in love with this place! My friends and I came here for restaurant week, and it was definitely worth it. The waiting area was cozy while we waited for our last friend to park. He was about 20 minutes late, but they didn't mind. We got a bottle of red wine along with dinner. For the appetizer, I ordered a mozzarella with Italian meat. I was expecting something like prosciutto, but it was disappointing... I'd liken it to plain ham from the deli. My friends were happy with their butternut squash soup and beet salad, though. We all had the filet mignon for our entree and everyone was wowed. All conversation stopped because we were too busy eating! It was definitely one of the best steaks I've ever had. For dessert, I ordered chocolate bread pudding and tasted my friend's blood orange sherbet. Both were phenomenal as well. The food was amazing, the servers and hosts were super friendly, and I really like the atmosphere. This is definitely the best place I've been to for restaurant week and is one of my favorite restaurants in the city!

Went here for dinner last night. I would probably say that I would try other steak houses before going back. The best thing I had for my meal was the crab and shrimp Louie. Had a ton of flavor. Onion soup has a very strong flavor that we chouldn't quite point out what it was. There were four of us for dinner and we didn't finish the soup. For dinner my boyfriend and I shard the porterhouse for two. I know it's a steak place and you should appreciate how the steak is cooked but when my boyfriend who loves a good steak couldn't finish because it was so rare towards the bone, that's something not to go back for. I did take the steak home an once we got it in our kitchen under the light you actually saw how rare it was. His mother ordered the delmoncio and loved it while his father was just ok with his pork chops. The sides were great for sharing. The singer fries were on point. Tons of flavor. We also got baked potatoes ad creamed spinach The desserts were awesome. The chocolate cake was decadent and the sorbet was perfect to cleanse your palette

Restaurant week in Philly so we decided to head back since we loved the place before. Love the place but meal just wasn't what we remembered. My steak was too salty and everything else was just average. Disappointing however being restaurant week it's understandable. May be an off night but food just wasn't that good. Service was terrific as usual. Will try one more time. Hope this was a fluke.

Our experience was very good. Their salad selection does not include a simple mixed greens salad. When I asked about it, I was told they could not accommodate...but to my surprise the chef did so anyway...and it was a damn good mixed green salad to boot. We ordered a mix of appetizers along with a dozen oysters. The server never brought out the oysters...later claiming the computer had been down and they were submitting everything manually to the kitchen- thus the oysters were left off. Not sure that we fully bought into that; however, to make up for that the server offered complimentary dessert and coffee after the meal. The main course with sides was exceptional on all levels. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their selection. While our experience definitely showed the "human side" which can produce errors...the professionalism of the staff more than made up for everything. Overall, this place definitely deserves a 5 star rating, and I would definitely return again.

Well another Steven Starr restaurant...and another great review...as is standard for Starr...the ambience, decor and service is excellent...as to the the food...that too is excellent...you don't go to butcher & singer for the seafood...so of course we had the aged porterhouse for one...we were told it was 22 oz...frankly I dispute that...but the quality and taste were fantastic...since everything is ala carte...we had the shrimp and crab Louie as a salad...very good...albeit a bit on the small side...then with the steak we had the stuffed hash browns...which are a lot better than they sound...for dessert...of course the baked Alaskan...once again excellent...bravo Steven Starr...we will be back

My BF and I decided to go out to a fancy dinner for Valentine's Day, so we picked Butcher & Singer since we've both heard such great things about it. The restaurant is beautiful with high ceilings, huge chandeliers, and a hilarious wall painting of fancily-dressed dogs (perhaps my favorite part of the restaurant). For drinks and appetizers we started with the singer collins and rum and ginger. Both drinks were fantastic - flavors were delicious and well-thought out. I have but one small gripe that's barely worth mentioning, but we're all family here, right? Why oh why are your cocktail straws just a smidgen taller than your cocktail glasses? Annoying...but I mean, it's just straws, so really no big deal. We also got a dozen raw oysters and the shrimp and crab louie salad. The salad was one of my favorite parts of the meal, believe it or not. I'm not sure what kind of creamy dressing they use, but it's sent right from heaven. All of the fish was super fresh. For dinner, we ordered the special filet with king crab legs, the delmonico with oscar compliment, stuffed hash browns, and mushrooms & onions. Both of the steaks were hands down the best I've ever had! Everything was fresh, cooked to perfection, and perfectly seasoned. The steak melted like butter in your mouth...mmm. The only thing I didn't enjoy about the meal was the stuffed hash browns. I'm really not sure what all the buzz is about this side dish! It's like a deep fried hashbrown "pie" barely stuffed with some sort of indeterminable cheese stuff. Definitely not a fan! Sadly, we didn't have any room for dessert, but we've already decided that we'd come back at some point for just the appetizers and some dessert (that is, unless we win the lottery and can afford to drop some moolah on a great meal). All-in-all, our meal was absolutely fantastic! The food was delicious, the service was the best I've ever had, and the drinks were spot on. I'd definitely come back here, but only for special occasions as this place is $$$$$.

I'll start with first impression, which was a ten! Beautiful space, perfect lighting and attentive and knowledgeable waitstaff. We were seated promptly for our reservation on a Saturday night. Had a very expensive cocktail at the bar first. Appetizer of calamari was different and perfect for sharing. We ordered the porterhouse for the table and lobster tails. Honestly, I was under impressed with the steak. I mean it was good, and tasty. Nothing special. The lobster however was a big disappointment. The texture was chewy and tasted bland, would never order lobster here again and was disappointed because the server raved about it. Guess it is a difference of opinions. The star of the night was the hash browns. Out of this world, do not miss them! After not being wow'ed by dinner we opted for a walk to a local gelato shop. Probably wont make the trip back unless I have a craving for those hashbrowns!

Steak was incredible...slightly rarer than I expected, but I'm glad it was prepared this way. The sides were ok, as if not to outshine the main star of the show... Apple cake was slightly crisp and chewy on outside and moist within. Perfect place to go if you need to look beautiful but woke up puffy and zit-plagued-- the lighting covers a multitude of sins! Seriously, the dim light, lush decor, and impeccable service reminded me of a scene in a 1950s flick. Best part: see what happens to any crumbs that unfortunately miss your digestive track--- your waiter will artfully whip out a tool designed just for that!

This was the perfect spot for a quite romantic dinner for two. We walked in what felt like the roaring 20's and were totally transformed. I ordered the pinot grigio, and my date just ordered a simple beer. Starting with bread we chose to do the steak for two medium rare, with asparagus and the mashed potatoes. I had read on yelp that someone really disliked the potatoes and being a potatoes fanatic I had to try them. I have to say they were wrong, they were very delicious and accompanied my steak perfectly. The filet side of the steak was mouth watering perfect, I felt the new york strip side was too tough for my liking. The steak was over all seasoned perfectly. I did not care for the asparagus at all, I would definitely not order them again. I was looking forward to dessert, but being too full and not seeing anything that really pulled me I skipped it. We had a reservation, and were quickly seated, servers were on top of their game, and location was superb. This is quite the spot in Philly, glad I tried it out.

Many of the reviews are accurate. Nice ambiance. Normal steakhouse menu. However, portion size has been drastically downside with the same prices. Steakhouses are never a bargain place, but for the money, this restaurant is no longer acceptable.

Great great place. It's a fancy steak house but they actually try to be nice. After the requisite wait 5 minutes for your empty table reservation, everything else is snappy and good. Our waitress Jenn was really great. Not stuffy or mean, funny efficient. Delmonico steak was delicious just a tad to salty. Porterhouse was solid and perfectly cooked thanks to solid understanding from the server as to how we wanted it. Crab cake was unexpectedly amazing. Crunchy on the outside moist on the inside. They even volunteered to accommodate dietary issues. When did that happen to you at a fancy steak house. Baked Alaska is even good for someone that prefers chocolate. Its worth the money.

I dined here last Restaurant Week but am just now updating my profile, so I apologize in advance for the delay. First of all, Butcher and Singer set the standard for how not to treat a group during restaurant week. From reservation time to getting our coats, our entire meal was ~40 minutes, which is insanely fast for a 3-course meal. The moment one person finished their meal, someone was over to take the plate and drop the next course off. I don't know if we just had a particularly bad server or not, but we just got the vibe that we were "not wanted" as RW patrons. So, it was hard to savor and enjoy the experience as we were rushed throughout... The food was good not great, nothing really sticks out. The steak, to be honest, was a bit overcooked for me and the other people in our group. Again, this was a Tuesday night, but I was surprised that it wasn't top-notch.

A good friend and I were here for dinner during Restaurant Week. Overall, a great experience. Here are the highlights: 1) Monday night dinner reservation was honored. We were seated promptly. 2) Waitress was friendly. Gave us ample time to decide on drinks (we went with the $8 wine pairing off the RW menu) 3) Really enjoyed the bread (which is hard to say for a lot of restaurants) Perfect amount of crunch on the outside and soft on the inside. 4) 8 oz filet mignon was impressive. This is where I put pretty much all my stars for this rating. I haven't been to a steak house in a while; this blew me away. Nice char on the outside and juicy medium rare pink on the inside. Well seasoned. I asked for the steak sauce (which is not A1!) but it would have been fine to eat it without the sauce. I posted a pic of my RW three course meal. bon appetite! Also, there is a parking validation for RW!

Restaurant Week Review: Had the $35 prix fixe dinner menu in January. The meal was great and solid, but not too interesting. Everything was done well but I have to admit I left a bit hungry and I'm 5'2"... I don't think that should be the case at a steak restaurant. If you're in the mood for a reliable restaurant and a steal for restaurant, come here. But don't expect something very inventive. 1st course: Oysters Rockefeller They were good, but my portions were 3 very tiny oysters! Some tables around us had bigger oysters. Any relation to the fact that we are were poor grad students who only ordered one glass of wine? Main: Filet Mignon cooked medium rare with creamed spinach Melt in your mouth good. Flavor was normal, not amazing, but that's perfectly fine when the cut and sear is that good. Dessert: Caramel Chocolate Tart Fairly good, plain chocolately-caramelly dessert.

Another steakhouse in Philadelphia but this place is LEGIT. Throughout my first experience, the staff was a class act all the way from the bartender who tailored the cocktails to make them less sweet for my crew of dudes through our waitress who was always there just at the right times. This place is not cheap but the quality of the justifies the price. I have no idea what bottle of wine my boy ordered but it was good enough to order seconds and thirds and not drinking red wine with red meat is sacrilegious in my book. In the appetizer department, the calamari was very average; breaded well but the dipping sauce was a little thin to hold the breading. The fried oysters on the other hand, WOW - these things were huge and topped with the perfect aioli. I'm also a big fan of their "butcher and singer" salad even though I'm not sure how it qualifies as a salad. It is basically an antipasti plate in a bowl, meat city. The steak gets its own paragraph. I was part of the porterhouse for 3 which meant we got a sliced up hunk of cow that was perfectly cooked. The image of how beautifully rare this thing was cooked is burned into my brain. Juicy, moist, succulent you name it this monster piece of meat was worth every penny. The sides on the other end were a nice complement but an afterthought in the grand scheme of this feast. The brussel sprouts have bacon so +1 and the creamed spinach was a hit but the asparagus was on par with what I make at home and the stuffed hash brown they are apparently are famous for were nothing special. I couldn't taste any "stuffing" which was the consensus of the table. Didn't get a chance for dessert but already planning another trip here (but probably during restaurant week to give my wallet a break).

Solid restaurant week spot. Every year I get together with my oldest friend, Lindsey G. from Philadelphia, her mom, and my mom for a girl's night out. Due to my yelp prowess it's my job to pick the restaurant and make the reservation. Butcher and Singer seemed like a good pick because of it's central location, and red meat options. We are all steak eaters. None of us had been to Butcher and Singer before, and we thoroughly enjoyed the meal. I went with the fresh mozzarella with eggplant for my appetizer. The mozzarella was very fresh, and pleasantly salty, with some acid cutting though the creaminess creating a very well balanced dish. For my entree I had to do the filet. I really only get this when it's offered at RW, and it was perfectly cooked to medium rare, and very well seasoned. The mashed potatoes were creamy, but not overly rich. For dessert I had the chocolate bread pudding. Bread pudding is a favorite dessert of mine, and this one was only okay. It needed to be warmer and more chocolatey. The bananas on top were a nice touch though. Service was good. The waitress returned several times to ask how things were, and to refill drinks. I went with the $8 cabernet that was on special. It was very fruity for a cab, but still went well with the meal. The interior is very dark, and we were seated on what seemed like living room chairs. Very comfortable, but kind of low to the table. It was also a little on the loud side. The ceiling is very pretty. I wasn't sure how I felt about dog murals at restaurants, but the dogs here are dressed so nicely, and look so dapper, that I have to give it two thumbs up. Second favorite decor item was the steer head in the center of the room. It signals to me that this is a place to order steak. Winning.

$11 burgers and $15 Manhattans? Sure why not. It all seemed to work out just as it should in this place. Definitely feels like a throwback restaurant, even though it's only a few years old. Food, drinks, service were perfect. The waiter even have us a history of some of the more interesting features of the place. For $25ish, it's a very memorable lunch experience.

The atmosphere was idyllic for group and intimate occasions. The porterhouse was extremely light, flavorful and delicious. We had to wait 45 minutes for our table but that didn't matter because we commenced the party at the bar and still had a great time. Service was not impeccable but they were genuine and polite. Nice experience - would recommend all day long.

It is amazing what a difference a year can make. While my experience in 2011 was horrible, my visit this past Sunday was amazing. Reservations were made to take advantage of Restaurant Week, and my guest and I were extremely impressed with our experience from start to finish. We arrived 15 minutes before the restaurant was even open, but we were politely greeted by the hostess with a smile, and offered a seat at the bar. Once there, the friendly bartender made me their version of a dark and stormy, complete with homemade ginger soda..which made for quite an incredible cocktail, definitely worth the $12 price. Once seated, butternut squash soup was ordered as an appetizer. It arrived quickly and well flavored, The soup was smooth and creamy and the perfect temperature. The presentation of the entree was sub par, but the taste made up for the terrible presentation. (The salmon was served on a huge plate by itself, and the green beans almandine was served in a side dish - while I know the theme of this restaurant is family style, I felt that in a party of two, the presentation could have been better). The salmon was flavored in a lemon caper sauce that was to die for. The garlic and butter blended with the green beans almandine was perfection. For dessert, my guest ordered a chocolate carmel dish that once you stuck your fork into it, the sight of the gooey goodness was enough to let you know that it was going to be quite amazing...which it was. For myself, I ordered an apple cinnamon tart cake that was flavorful, perfectly portioned, and indulgent. We completed our experience with a regular coffee for myself, and a decaf espresso for my guest...which we both enjoyed to the last drop. If you are looking for an overall experience in dining, this is the place to be. It is elegant without being extravagant, restful and enjoyable, as you are not rushed through your meal and the service, and the atmosphere and architecture is enough to keep you mesmerized and talking about it for the rest of your evening.

One of my favorite steakhouses in Philly. Being my wife's 30th birthday, I decided to take her here and enjoy the amenities. The service was excellent as we were always attended to with courtesy. Food was amazing; shrimp cocktail and crab cake was of decent size and portion. The wine selection was decent as I opted for the Cab. 7oz filet was cooked medium and was a tad bit over cooked but still delicious. We had the apple crum to celebrate and a bday presentation was brought out (I had noted this on the open table reservation.) This dinner will break the wallet but for special occasions, it hits the spot.

WOW. Butcher and Singer is my favorite steak restaurant in Philly now. I got a filet mignon and it was cooked exactly how I asked and wanted it to be. The sides we got were the asparagus and stuffed hash browns. We got the hash browns because our waitress recommended it and good thing we got it! I wasn't sure what exactly this would be or how it would taste but it was reallyyyyyyy good. It was slightly greasy for me but all hash browns are greasy so I won't complain:) It seemed like more potatoes stuffed inside potatoes but the right amount of saltiness and mushy texture went well with my best steak. If I ever steak again, I am coming here! The vibe of the restaurant works well to go with families, friends, gf/bf, business and everything. Def recommend !

I was looking for a place with a romantic atmosphere and great food, and Butcher and Singer delivered. The ambience was excellent with lowered lighting, high ceilings, and giant chandeliers. We were both impressed the moment we walked in. We hit a snag as even after I had made reservations, we still had to wait over half an hour in the bar/lounge before getting a table. We were not happy, but the house manager made up for it by sincerely apologizing, providing us with free champagne and checking on us throughout the night to make sure we were being taken care of. We started with the butcher's salad. It was very similar to an antipasti salad and was one of the more delicious salads I've had. Though they have a lot of entrees, the star of this restaurant is definitely the steak. I had the dried porterhouse steak. It was as good as the reviews said, and one of the best steaks I've had. My date (read: fiancee) had the filet mignon and agreed that it was one of the best she'd had. The steaks were perfectly cooked, seared on the outside with a cool red inside that was delicious. We also ordered the stuffed hash brown, and found that we were way too full to finish it. Our server pointed out, though, that it makes for the perfect breakfast with a fried egg on it. She was not wrong. Altogether the service, ambience, and quality of food were better than what we expected, aside from the wait for a table. We would definitely go again.

When you walk in, the ceiling are massive and the room is large. Not much to break up the noise when the restaurant is packed. The steak is good but a bit salty. The brussel sprouts are so great. The drinks are average. However, I did not have the wine.

If I want a part of a dead cow to be heated up and served to me, I want it to be prepared at Butcher and Singer. While some species of animal develop keen senses or other defense mechanisms to keep themselves alive, the cow has developed delicious meat, insuring that humans will always make their survival a priority. Butcher & Singer is added proof to this theory that I just made up right now. Their 8 oz. filet mignon is excellent. There were much fewer frills here than you'd expect at a Starr joint. Medium rare is ACTUALLY medium rare. The middle is not warm at all and the cut is virtually devoid of fatty chunks. Their Brussels sprouts(with bacon) are fantastic. They clearly outshone the potatoes and creamed spinach. Even the before-dinner bread is great. I've also got to give props to the baked Alaska, a surprisingly original dessert.

Beautiful ambiance and great service. But making a reservation is pointless bc walkins got seated before us and we waited a half hour past our reservation time. Moody boyfriend (hungry, irritated) equals not so much of a fun date night. Oh and the food was okay. Nothing spectacular.

If you are looking for an amazing dining experience, great ambience, attentive service, and quite possibly the best steak you will ever have, I would highly recommend making a reservation at Butcher and Singer immediately. It definitely ain't cheap, but my wife and I agree that it was worth every penny. We split the Dry Aged Porterhouse and a Delmonico and they immediately became 2 of the 3 best steaks we have ever eaten (Especially the filet half of the Porterhouse). The only other steak I have had that is on par with these was the Dry Aged Ribeye from Barclay Prime, and we have eaten at many of the high end steak houses in and around the Philadelphia area (Barclay Prime, Union Trust, Del Frisco's, Capital Grill, Morton's, etc...). The sides (Stuffed hash browns & creamed spinach) were good, not great, but we still brought most of it home along with some steak, and had an incredible leftover lunch the next day. As for the service, the front of the house staff and our waitress were friendly and attentive, they sat us a few minutes ahead of our reserved time even though it was a busy weekend night, and we never had to ask for a refill of a drink, a plate to be removed, etc... this is definitely a well oiled machine. We were too full for desert, but hopefully we will try that out on our next visit...and we will be back soon.

I went here last week for Restaurant Week. We were lucky to get a reservation, although it was at 9PM. Upon entering, it took a while for my eyes to get adjusted to the dim lighting, but the vibe was so fancy and upscale, more so than other Starr restaurants. We were offered coat check and seated in a nice roundabout booth. We were hungry and ready for meat! We each ordered pretty much everything off the menu. I got the beet salad, filet mingon, and bread pudding. The salad was pretty tasty and I loved the varying textures. Also, the cheese was so stinky, which I love in salad. Although the beets were supposed to be the feature of it, I felt like they were a little underrepresented. The filet was delicious and cooked exactly the way I love steak (red/pink on the inside) and it was so tender, easily sliced. The steak was lightly seasoned and had an overall savory taste. It was paired with the creamed spinach, which although the portion was very (emphasis on very) small, it was a good compliment to the meaty steak and it was very creamy. Lastly, the bread pudding outshone everything else. It was still warm when served which is a plus. It was so creamy on the inside and was topped with some fresh fruit and these delicious mini chocolate covered wafer balls. Surprisingly delicious crunch! Overall a pretty good dining experience. The only thing I was only really surprised by the bread pudding. The salad and steak was good, but nothing exciting. And DEFINITELY not worth normal prices, especially the portions. Pros: atmosphere, variety, dessert Cons: prices, slow service, portions Dishes to try: Bread pudding, blueberry cheesecake Dishes to skip: Beet salad

I would definitely give them a 5 star for their service, Ambiance and food. The only thing they can improve is the greeting when we arrive. The lady who welcomed us was not sure which tables are booked and she made us move around a lot, which was a little annoying since we really wanted to have our lunch Quick! Wonderful ambiance, complete cutoff from the outside would in the middle of the day.

I decided to try Butcher and Singer to change up my normal Del Friscos routine. We came here for my boyfriends birthday. Before dinner we made our way to the bar, unfortunately the bar tender was rude as he did not make our drink correctly, for a 14$ drink the menu stated that the whiskey used should be Bulleit Whisky and not the cheaper Maker Mark. After pointing out the mistake to the bartender he tried to argue, when he looked at the menu he saw he was wrong, but still charged us the full amount for the drink without making a new one. After the bar we took our seats, I do not know if there was a coat room because no one had offered to take it. We started with the shrimp cocktail and the ceasar salad both very good, the shrimp cocktail was extremely fresh! For dinner we both got a glass of red wine and the 8 oz filet mignon- I must say it was good however I believe it lacked seasoning! For the sides we got the mashed potato which was very creamy and delicious. Dessert was delicious- we had the salted chocolate caramel tart and the apple cake which came out warm- be sure to note that there are pecans on the apple cake. This was lacking in the description, since I am allergic to pecans I just had a small piece. One thing to note was that the tables are very close together... We had heard the conversations on both sides of the table. Service- it started out good at dinner but after our appetizers it diminished, They waiter had brought out our desert with the birthday candle to the table next to us... which kinda ruined the suprise for my boyfriend, as the male at that table said it is not my birthday... All in all I would try it again, but Del Frisco's would be on the back of my mind.

Butcher and Singer, truly an homage to old Hollywood where low lights and dark woods evoke a feeling reminiscent of a bygone era when women donned full red lips, men wore a suit and tie and post-Prohibition liquor flowed freely. I stole that verbiage from their website. Plagiarising? A little. Spot on? You betcha. Butcher set the stage for an utterly fantastic - and purely gluttonous - group dinner worthy of the most discriminating steakhouse connoisseur and seasoned libation aficionado alike. From my expertly crafted Manhattan sipped on a leather banquette aside walls dripping in mahogany, to my raw bar platter runneth over with lobster, crab, shrimp and oysters, this is THE quintessential supper club affair. Of course the goods don't stop at booze and crustacean, no Sir, buckle up for an evening of delightful eats that ooze overindulgence and shun moderation. Ahhhh, just how I like it! Think classic wedge salads, perfectly charred steaks and chops galore, whole juicy roasted chicken, sides of gloriously cheesy stuffed hash browns, luscious creamed spinach - oh! - and desserts so phenom they'll haunt you in your dreams. Mmmmmm, Mmmm.. YES!! With so much to choose from, figuring out where to start can seem a bit daunting. Allow me to present a no fail guide to doing Butcher and doing it right: (1) Well chilled bottle of Veuve Clicquot // Begin with Bubbles, always (1) Shellfish Platter // You gotta love them swimmies (1) Wedge Salad // Never deny yourself sweet, sweet Bacon (1) Dry Aged Porterhouse + side of Bearnaise // Meat-a-palooza Fabulosity (1) Order of Stuffed Hash Browns // ToDieForGoodness (1) Baked Alaska // Purrrrfection on a Plate Honestly, you can't help feel a little (ok, plenty) sexy in these well-appointed digs and the stellar service accompanying all those tastycake items are just a bonus to boot. Take a Butcher and a Singer for a ride soon... I think you just might like it.

I've only been to B&S for the lunch deal - so keep that in mind while reading the review. Butcher & Singer has the ideal lunch deal in town for anyone. Business lunch, lunch with friends, family in town - it doesn't matter. Great historic atmosphere with excellent service. Quiet and spaceous. This may be my go to nice but reasonable lunch spot. The $10 burger and fries deals take other local upscale burger joint for a good run. Yea this a one of the Star locations. Don't forget this *was* the beloved Stripped Bass. This also was the old time Butcher and Singer location where the ticker ran around the crown modeling of the location. Interested in history? Lunch covo lacking? Ask your server for the history - its an interesting story and it buy you time to think of things to talk about or even helps building off the restaurants history.

I went here with my husband this past Saturday night for our anniversary dinner. We have dined at tons of steakhouses in the past, and I was truly impressed with this one. The service was impeccable and the food was delicious. I had the petite filet which was cooked perfect and had amazing flavor. My husband had the Delmonico steak which our waiter recommended and he loved it. For dessert, their signature Baked Alaska is a must! They even put a little "Happy Anniversary" white chocolate sign and a candle in our dessert. I thought that was such a nice touch. Everything was spread out perfectly over the time we were there and we never once felt rushed at all. I loved the décor of the restaurant as well and I really liked that the tables were not right on top of one another. I am looking forward to going back the next time I am in Philly.

Top notch dining experience. The aged porterhouse, is one of the the best steaks I've ever had. The sides are of high standard as well. Excellent table service tops off a satisfying night.

Incredible. Everything was perfect from the moment we walked in until the time we left. We had the oysters, French onion soup, porterhouse steak for two, hashed, and spinach. Everything was prepared perfectly and the staff were more than accommodating. We were celebrating my bf's job offer which we only mentioned briefly and they surprised us with the apple dessert on a plate that said congratulations (John only briefly mentioned that the apple dessert caught his eye too)! Such a delightful place and best steak I've ever had!

I dined here earlier tonight for restaurant week. Unfortunately, Butcher and Singer left me feeling mostly underwhelmed. I ordered the filet. It was under seasoned and came with mashed potatoes which were nothing special. It seemed to me to be a lower quality filet. I'm not sure if they did this just for RW or what. The dessert and salad were very good and made up for the poor entrée. I've eaten at most of the other steakhouses in Philly and this one is close to the bottom. It wasn't terrible by any stretch but I just had higher expectations. I might have to try this again in the future, but for now I'm not running back.

I came here for lunch because I've heard so much about the burger at Butcher and Singer. That's what I got. Unfortunately, they only offer the burger at lunch on weekdays, but if you happen to be able to go, try it out. It's a very solid burger with cheddar and fried onions in it. It's quite heavy and large, but sometimes that's exactly what you want from a burger. It is a little bit on the salty side though. The ambience in the restaurant is beautiful. It's the lobby of a grand old bank, and the vault of the bank still stands in the center of the restaurant. If Stephen Starr knows how to do one thing right, it's the ambience. I look forward to trying out their dinner sometime.

Dined here on a Sunday. Menu is a la carte style. Prices are on the higher side. Everyone was happy with their meals. Drinks were extremely inconsistent, ordered a Bloody Mary that came out perfect, the second one was pink and had so much horseradish I had to chew it, and had lemon and lime..... Don't fruit a Bloody Mary please, the 3 olives that came with the first one were perfect, even celery would be acceptable but fruit is outlandish. For dinner I had the filet it was a perfect cut and cooked perfectly, my boyfriend had the porterhouse which he said was "alright" and another guest said her salmon was delicious. The Brussels sprouts are great, the asparagus is boring, the baked potato sucked and had a rotten end. Overall my experience was great which is why 4 stars. To be 5 star, EVERYTHING must be perfect. Staff was friendly service was good. All in all A good place to go. And the atmosphere is beautiful, but very very dimly lit. Some of the waiters even had little pen lights and were lighting the menu for guests to read- possibly excessive.

You cannot go wrong with Restaurant Week lunch at Butcher & Singer. I returned once again for the three course meal during week 2 of RW, and everything from the greeting at the front door to the water glasses that were constantly being refilled was great. I enjoyed a mozzarella and tomato salad with chopped pistachios and olive tapenade followed by a cobb salad with a generious portion of juicy sliced chicken alongside. I was somehow able to turn down the dessert course, although the spiced pear sorbet was sweetly calling my name. I can't believe I've never been for dinner but it's something I continue to look forward to!

Came here for restaurant week because it is usually expensive. The food was good, but nothing too memorable. At least the restaurant week menu was in accordance with a steakhouse's menu. The ambiance was quite swanky and the crowd's definitely older than yuppies. Very high ceilings and dim lights.

WARNING: THE STEAKS & CHOPS ARE H.U.G.E. AH!! Came here to celebrate a 4 year anniversary with the boyfriend. The perfect restaurant for the occasion. So put on your fancy pants and celebrate with a mean-looking piece of steak. The steak was GOOD. A MONSTER, but good. One piece of steak would have been enough for the both of us. He got the Delmonico & I got the Dry-aged Porterhouse which were both recommended by the waiter. We both got medium-rare, and the meat was not too dry and just enough juice. The only problem was we ordered WAY too much food and ended up basically eating ourselves to death. Wished the waiter would have stopped us before we ordered up a storm, and doomed our stomachs: 2 appetizers, 2 steaks and a stuffed hashbrown. It's not the best feeling when you have to take a "break" from eating and the last few pieces of steak feel like you're running the final stretch of a marathon. Neither of us could finish so the last few pieces of meat went to waste and we ended up taking the half-eaten hashbrown home. Service was excellent. Ambiance was romantic, the right amount of dim lighting (can't take any pictures without flash so it may be wise to not whip out the camera), nice decor with the deer head, candles, and dangling chandeliers. Overall, great place! Worth the visit, if only I wasn't so bloated afterwards.

My husband and I made reservations at Butcher and Singer for our birthdays. I had read previous reviews and was really excited to go! I have to say that the restaurant completely matched my expectations. We arrived a few minutes before our actual reservation time, with the intention of having a drink at the bar but were seated immediately. The service in the beginning was a tad slow while we waited for our drink orders to be taken but nothing outrageous. A prior review commented about the cocktail straws being too small for the glasses. I mentioned this to my husband and we laughed because it is true. It made my vodka tonic just a little awkward to drink. Our server, Alison, explained the menu briefly but we had already settled on our order before we set foot in the restaurant. We ordered the porterhouse for two cooked medium, and the stuffed hash browns. We were going to order a crab cake appetizer and a side of asparagus as well but at the last second decided not to. Funnily enough, we were offered for an additional $15 to have our steak "Oscar" style, which was topped with lump crab and served over asparagus and covered with a bernaise sauce. It was fate. Our food was served timely and let me say that steak was the most incredible steak I've ever had. It was cooked perfectly and was so tender and the perfect color. The spice rub gave the outside a nice crisp that we both loved. My husband ranked it the second best he's ever had, only beaten by a steak he had at the Chop House in Chicago. We were both a little surprise at the stuffed hash browns after all of the stellar reviews here. We found them a little bland, and I thought a tad salty. My husband liked the lump crab and we both enjoyed the asparagus, if only to feel a little less guilty about all the rest. The house made steak sauce was tangy and a great compliment to the perfectly seasoned steak. We had planned on ordering dessert but ended up too stuffed to even consider it. Butcher and Singer was an incredible meal for a special occasion and I look forward to a return trip!

The food was good except the salmon very bland and just make sure if you take any food home, make sure they put it in the bag. The sides also are very large- family Style. I gave it three stars more or less for the service. Our waitress wasn't informative of the menu. It was another waiter from the next table who noticed we weren't being waited on who told my husband and I the history Of the building and great recommendations.

My 100th review needed to be something special and I just had a meal at Butcher and Singer last night so it's kismet. First and foremost, the place deserves five stars just for the building. It's absolutely gorgeous inside and it's hard to not stare at the decor while you eat. My roommate and I went over for Restaurant Week, and I know a lot of city and foodie people hate restaurant week but you know what? I'm in grad school and broke so I'm not going to pass up a good deal. I'm only going to describe my meal because my roommate is on Yelp too and I know she'll be posting her review soon. I started out with the caesar salad which was fresh, creamy, and had a nice peppery bite. I took a quick look around the room to make sure no one was looking before using the bread to clean up the remaining dressing and cheese on my plate. Then they brought out my steak. An 8 oz filet mignon. This was so perfect I could have cried. It had a crisp, salty crust and was cooked right to medium rare. I got the green bean amandine side dish and they were also out of this world. For dessert, I got the apple streusel cake with dried cranberries and candied pecans. The cake was moist and flavorful and had just the right amount of cinnamon. With our meal, we went with the bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon that they were offering for $29. It paired well with every course. Sometimes during Restaurant Week, you can feel rushed by staff or feel like service isn't what you would get if you had gone any other time of the year. This was not the case with Butcher and Singer. Our waiter checked on us multiple times, always topping off our water and wine glasses and making sure everything was good. There was an issue with the bill where we were charged for a glass of wine from the bar that we didn't have so the manager took the check and walked away. A few minutes later, after talking with our server, he came back with an apology and two ways of fixing the issue. The waiter also came over and was apologetic. This meal was absolutely fantastic and I will definitely be back, especially to try that burger everyone on Yelp is raving about.

I was asked to arrange a dinner for our site leadership team and selected Butcher and Singer to host. I have no regrets and received strong positive reviews from all 15 of the guests (myself included). I started with oysters, I mean hey its on the company, right? They were fresh and sizable. We moved on to the Butcher Salad, which saw everyone clean their plate! I followed with a perfectly cooked Delmonico as we shared mushrooms, onions, and asparagus around the table. I made sure to save room for a dessert sampling which capped off the night. While I am sure it is much easier for me to rate them higher since I didn't have to pay the bill, everything was top notch and worth a visit! How could the night be topped off? By seeing Mayor Nutter enjoying his meal for the evening at B&S as well!

I dined at Butcher and Singer during restaurant week, and could not have been more delighted by the experience; the space definitely lived up to it's self described Old Hollywood ambiance (and then some), the service and attention was impeccable, and the food was absolutely delicious - it was one of those rare dining experiences where everything not only lived up to my expectations but surpassed them!

I was tasked with taking my sister's fiancé out for a "guy's" night a few weeks prior to the wedding. Her only advice was that I should consider a nice steakhouse. Butcher and Singer is indeed "nice." There is a timeless elegance to the interior decorating, music, and lighting choices. Our waiter was engaging and knowledgeable about all items on the menu and several drink selections. My guest ordered a caesar salad, creamed spinach, and the Delmonico steak. The steak in particular was quite large and perfectly cooked. My guest remarked that the steak was only lightly seasoned, but the inherent flavor of the meat was wonderful. Now, I happen to be a vegan. Since I was treating someone else, I wasn't very concerned with finding something on the menu. Additionally, the prices are definitely on the high end for a person in my tax bracket, so I was actually open to the idea of only ordering a salad for myself. Still, our waiter was able to immediately make recommendations for me. I ordered the Butcher Salad, Singer fries, and asparagus. All were delicious and sizably portioned. Butcher and Singer is a great restaurant, though also very expensive. My frugal nature causes me to crinkle my nose at $10 asparagus or $3 coffee. Still, the service and atmosphere were such that I definitely do not regret spending the money. For special occasions, I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Came here for the $11 burger lunch special and was absolutely blown away at the price of such a juicy beautiful burger and perfectly fried fries. I was so blown away I returned a few days later for their dinner and grot the 8 oz filet. Although the steak was flavored perfectly, I also expected the same perfection in the cooking level. However, my steak seemed to have a lesion so I got a medium when I ordered medium rare. This normally would have dropped the rating to a 4 star, since I am paying ~40 for a steak, but since everything else was just absolutely positively wonderful, I will keep it at a five. Awesome decor, superb service, and (almost) perfect food.

Their dry-aged steaks are absolutely phenomenal. They are expensive, but worth every dime. Easily the best steak I have ever eaten, and so tender I could have eaten it even if I had no teeth. Additionally, their stuffed hashbrown is a must! One of the most delicious dishes I have ever tasted. This is the place by which all other steak houses should be measured.

Oh so very baller. We went for Jack's graduation celebration and were prepared to pamper ourselves. Though Jack was all geared up for surf&turf, we watched an aged porterhouse as it was delivered to a nearby table and revised the plan. A porterhouse for two and one lobster tail for him. Plus stuffed hash browns and green beans. Oh and to start, half a dozen oysters for me and shrimp cocktail for him. And wine. Lots of wine. The service was stellar. Our waiter, Ed, was a breath of fresh air. A generally awesome and accommodating dude. The general manager noticed us noticing how incredibly clean our wine glasses were and came over to make sure everything was ok, and he touched base with us throughout the night. Oysters were delicious and frrrresh. The steak was cooked absolutely perfectly and the sides were awesome. My only minor complaints are a lack of wines less than $40, and a fairly uninspired bathroom. Like I said. Baller.

*Restaurant Week Review* I usually am so disappointed at the food during restaurant week. I feel like quality goes down exponentially as the restaurants tend to overbook reservations. I still end up being convinced to go somewhere though. Walking into Butcher & Singer, the place was clearly packed and noisy. It was also really dark in the restaurant. I guess if you have an ugly date, this is the place to take them. Our server was extremely nice and gave us a thorough run down of the menus. For the first course, I got the Fresh Mozzarella, Tomato and Olive Tapenade, Pistachio. I love mozzarella so there was really no way for this to be bad in my eyes. The corn chowder was lackluster. But I was so impressed that our server gave me an extra spoon because he heard that I wanted to try my friend's soup. For the entree, I order the filet, medium rare. Here is where my extreme disappointment kicks in; my filet was overcooked. It was really just so dry that I needed to coat it with the mashed potatoes. The creamed spinach was underwhelming. I know this is where the 'well it's restaurant week and this is what you get for the bargain' comes in. Okay, this is my consequence of being cheap. Fine, thanks for the dry filet. For dessert, I ordered the chocolate cake. This tasted like boxed cake and frosting on a plate and it wasn't even plated nicely. The spiced pear sorbet was gross. The Butterscotch Crème Caramel on the other hand, was probably the best thing of the night. It was a delicious creamy custard, perfectly refreshing. Based on this experience, I see no reason to come back. Definitely put up the extra money and go elsewhere (Barclay Prime).

4 stars for the steak though not so much for the ambience. I also didn't like the idea that we rsvp 4 days before and my bf specifically asked for a little more private section then they sat us down 1 table next to the middle. I was a little upset because of that but I did have an ok experience .

My boyfriend and I went for Restaurant Week.. I saw that this restaurant was rated well on open table and we decided to give it a shot. I was excited, but unfortunately I did not have the best experience. They try to fit so many tables in, and we were seating at a table that was actually touching the table next to us.. it was like we were dining with the two people at the table next to us. I could clearly hear everything their whole conversation the whole time.. we couldn't have a private conversation whatsoever. The only time our server talked to us was when he asked what we wanted to order, and then said thank you when we paid our bill.. unfortunately I am not even exaggerating!! I'm sorry, but if I'm going to be going to a top rated restaurant, I expect to have a good server. He didn't even introduce himself! I enjoyed my butternut squash soup for my appetizer, but that was about it. I had a filet and mashed potatoes for my entree, and I ordered my filet medium rare.. but both mine and my boyfriends came out completely undercooked.. it still looked purple inside. It was to the point where I was scared to eat it. When the people next to us received their filets, they had the same problem (because I could hear everything they were saying)! The mashed potatoes came in a small bowl, which would never be worth the actual price. The entree was just as bland as could be, I had to add a lot of extra salt and pepper just to get through it. The dessert was alright, I just personally did not like it. I am not one to ever write a review, especially a poor one, but I felt like I had to share this experience, as I feel you could find a much, much better place for a much better price.

I've only eaten there at lunchtime and have always ordered burgers because they're so good--and affordable. If you want to dine out in a beautiful space, get exceptional service and eat the best burgers in Philly, I highly recommend Butcher and Singer. I've sampled the steaks which are also exceptional, but I'll probably stick with lunchtime burgers, fries and onion rings.

We stopped by the small bar in this elegantly dark restaurant for a quick drink before heading to the Philadelphia Theater Company. I ordered the Ginger and Rum cocktail, which was very tasty, although not very strong. I also sampled the Fried Oysters (a little overcooked) and the Stuffed Hash Browns, which were nice snacks at the bar. Our server was attentive and quick, which was greatly appreciated.

Holy smokes! Of all the fancy and expensive steak houses I've been to this one was THE BEST - hands down. We ordered the Shellfish sampler platter to start. It had chilled shrimp cocktail, jumbo lump crab meat, crab claws (the size of your head), delicious shrimp salad, raw oyesters and clams. Everything was fresh and delicious! For my entree, I ordered the 8 oz filet mignon. It was delicious and seared perfectly. I can't tell you which sides to order because they were all amazing. The mushrooms were so rich and deep in flavor - not watery at all - almost a dry caramelized mushroom; asperagus with hollandaise - typical steakhouse fare BUT the hollandaise was the best I've ever tasted. We ordered the green beans amanine (very good but if we had to sacrifice one side next time, this owuld be it.). We also had the mashed potatoes, which tasted like pure butter and the stuffed hashbrowns which were spectacular. For dessert, we split the chocolate cake and the cheesecake. They were huge and delicious. I look forward to going back the next time I'm in Philly.

Food is absolutely amazing. The staff is really pleasant and nice. The food is expensive, but it's worth it. I always get the fried calamari which is so tender and served with this really good aioli. I've been here a number of times and everything tastes great. Save up some money and EAT HERE

This restaurant is INCREDIBLE. I've been here twice so far and each time the food and service were superb. French Onion soup is delicious, with a nice thick layer of melted cheese covering the pot. Calamari is low on the calamari but sooo tender. Filet Mignot, perfectly coooked. The large size is enough to share if you are ordering an app and sides. My dad ordered the pork chops and says they are the best chops he's ever had. Sides: all sides were superb. Mash potato was smooth and creamy. The hash browns were different and crunchy. I wouldn't order them again, but definitely something to at least try. All the veggie sides were great too. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to indulge in a great meal. One thing I'd like to note is that each time we were there, we had two servers. Waters were always full and we never had to wait to ask for anything. Service is superb.

Just moved to Philly and had Christmas Eve dinner here. Absolutely amazing. I had the chicken and would eat that meal everyday. Great experience.

We had drinks with friends last evening in the lounge - although the decor and drinks were amazing, our server was rude. Truly ruined the nice atmosphere by walking away while in conversation and replying to questions with very curt answers. The Butcher Manhattan was tasty and the wine menu extensive, but certainly turned off by the service, or lack thereof, from the bartender/server.

So is it really fair to give this place a Yelp review when I only stopped in for a drink and an appetizer at the bar? Well, I don't care anymore about what is fair. They're getting reviewed by me because I said so and that's it! Don't worry owners of this fine establishment, I'm giving you a positive one. I figure if you bother to make one small item on the menu well, then you probably do a lot of things on the menu well. And I will say your French Onion soup is excellent. Not as good as the guy across the street makes it (hey, he's Georges, what do you expect), but pretty darn good nonetheless. Only complaint is that one of the gentlemen behind the bar said to me as I sat down that my bartender would be with me in a moment. That moment turned into about 10 minutes because the bartender who was supposed to serve me was busy schmoozing with two gorgeous women who were also at the bar (the one who greeted me seemed to be in charge of drinks for the tables instead of the bar). Hey, I'd choose them over me too. But would it kill you to get my drink a little quicker?

Nice atmosphere and great service! The filet mignon was excellent! The mashed potatoes were a little disappointing (they tasted and looked like instant mashed potatoes). The coconut tart dessert was overall very good but the chocolate cake was very dry (surprising bc they supposedly have an award winning pastry chef)

The worst lunch and not sure why every 6 months that I give this place my money! Ordered appetizer which came as dessert after we reminded waiter that he forgot it. Burger requested med+ with no cheese so got rare and cheese. Yet still billed for it. Call me an idiot for visiting once again

Amazing atmosphere. Very retro vibe which I love. My hubby and I were celebrating my new job. We ordered the crabcake appetizer which was one of the best crabcakes I have ever had. Next up was the wedge however I had read on previous yelp reviews that their wedge comes with thousand island dressing so we both requested the blue cheese dressing. The wedge was decent I would say 4/5. The best wedge i've ever had was at flemmings but this was still good and I was happy. I only got one bread roll, which is a good thing for my skinny jeans but I had wanted another execuse to stuff my face with bread! I ordered the delmonico (rib eye) and so did my hubby. It was very good as well, I only eat steak and steakhouses so it was a treat. Our sides were the creamed spinach, yumm and the stuffed hashbrowns which I had seen all over the yelp reviews. This was wonderful and a much tastier and more exciting choice than fries or mashed taters. For dessert we tried the baked alaska since that was their signature dessert. It was good I would give it a 3.5/5 I tend to like chocolate desserts but when else would I ever get to try a baked alaska. yolo. I felt like the banana ice cream tasted a little too frozen if that makes sense. But i am happy we tried it! Oh yes and I had two Palmyra #9 drinks, it was similar to mojhito I think but it was vodka based. Those were divine I would go back alone for that drink and the hashbrowns! Lovely dinner.

An RW success story! The wife and I stopped in tonight. We had Open Table reservations for 7:45, showed up on time, and were seated immediately. The place was packed! We were seated at a beautiful table on one of the upper side levels. I'll get my one complaint out of the way now. It was noisy. There were no tables super close to us. It was just the general noise level that made it difficult to converse. I'm not sure there was anything that could be done other than to show up on a very slow night. Now for the food. I opted for butternut squash soup, 8 oz. filet, mashed potatoes and the cherry chocolate bread pudding. The wife went for beet salad, salmon, green beans and the same desert. In a word, or four, we were blown away! Beautifully plated, correct temperature, and delicious. It's not often that we both rave about every course. This was a seriously impressive meal. There was not a hint of RW skimping. Or waiter was Mickey (like the mouse) and he was perfection. He was a little humorous and attentive at just the right times. We couldn't have asked for anything more. Some folks say that RW week is a lesser experience than a normal week. While the menu was certainly limited our experience was stellar! We will be back.

Atmosphere and staff spectacular! We were walking by and did not have a reservation around 5:30. The hostess suggested one of the two lounge tables on the right side of the entrance. The table was great not in all the traffic of the bar area! Our waitress Kira was fantastic and was extremely well versed with the menu. Twin tails prepared perfectly, my wife and daughter were in the mood for burgers and they were spectacular with the addition of a little truffle oil. Frys were excellent as well. Atmosphere, staff, and food was a terrific Philadelphia experience! Highly recommend

Hurts me to do this, but: I had high hopes for Butcher & Singer though I would not come back. Overall, the food was great but with some notable exceptions. Also might be missing the mark value-wise given the steep prices. Yes, I know it's B&S, but it didn't live up to the price like other top notch places in Philly. The best part about this place is the atmosphere...high ceilings, huge chandeliers, marble columns...very impressive. -Butternut squash soup - great but under-seasoned -Calamari - terrible, under-seasoned with some pieces cooked and others uncooked and the 10:1 ratio of tempura veggies left me thinking I was at a Chinese restaurant -Braised beef shortribs & filet mignon were excellent and cooked perfectly Mashed potatoes-delicious -Blood orange sorbet and vanilla creme caramel were also good but underwhelming. The main reason for the 2 stars was the server. Our server was horrible...he consciously got nicer at the end, but it was too late. I know you might read this thinking "maybe it was crazy busy", but that wasn't the case - even so, I wasn't paying this much to deal with piss-poor attitude. I've never had worse service in Philly. Go to Davios...

I went here with the bf's family and it was pretty good- although nothing too spectacular. We yelped and found Butcher and Singer and I was very excited to try it out for dinner last week. I got the calamari to start and the delmonico rib eye steak. I am a huge calamari fan, but to my disappointment, the huge plate of calamari was really disguised by a ton of tempura fried vegetables- there was barely any calamari! My steak was delicious. I ordered it medium rare, but it came out more on the very very rare side. Good thing it tasted so yummy! We also got a few sides, but none of them stood out either- except the soupy out-of-the-box looking mashed potatoes.... Our service was a bit slow, but still good, while out meal was delicious, but again, nothing out of this world.

There is no better steak than the Delmonico at Butcher and Singer. It's my favorite steak in the world. And I have eaten more than my fair share of steaks. Perhaps you think I'm exaggerating. I am not. The Delmonico is crispy and salty and intensely flavorful on the outside... but with a tender, heavenly center cooked exactly how you like it. Unbelievable. The hash browns, served family-style and made with sour cream and vidalia onions, are also out of this world. To be honest I'm not sure why they even have other items on the menu. The service is impeccable, the decor classic and elegant. Butcher and Singer drips with class.

My name is Bill McThrill Esquire the Fifth (well at least some of that isn't a nom de plume). Yet anytime I step foot into Butcher and Singer I can't help but be whisked away into the time of Don Draper and the era of Mad Men. Seriously though how priceless is the interior and every step of the service in this piece of luxury? If you think for a second that you've experienced a second of the classy high life of Philly without stepping in and sampling the meat mansion that is Butcher; then you'd best be thinking again fool. Although it does manage to deliver just fine when I walk in on the business casual front during lunch time for that extra gold star. But the main purpose of this silly review is to cover the one key ingredient of Butcher and Singer that no other piece of the Philly luxury delivers so successfully. The Butcher Burger is so simply done, yet executed with a simple (read: not overboard) amount of the finest ingredients to make it perfectly flawless. And that makes this top of the line steakhouse (I actually like a Starr restaurant?) one of the best places to grab a burger in Philly!

What a great experience. Ordered the Esgargot, which was phenomenally prepared. The filet mignon was like silk. Delmonico like velvet. The stuffed hashed browns were very nice. Steak and hash browns for breakfast the next day from the leftovers was just as good as the night before. Great experience, just extremely expensive. $250 for 1 app, 2 steaks, 2 sides, 1 bottle of red, dessert and tip.

I went to Butcher and Singer when my cousin was in town travelling with her neighbor and his family. He offered to pay the bill, so I can't comment on how anything relates to prices, or if anything got comp'd but here's the general break down. We had a bit of a wait before we got our seats (although we were on time for our reservation). Not a big deal on that. While the wife and family waiting in the waiting area (which is pretty nice btw) me and the dad went to grab drinks from the bar. When ordering a pricey wine, the bartender did, while specifying he means no disrepect, the price of the wine, which I thought was odd. Either they get people in there often who don't know what they're doing, or he was being presumptious about the dad. Either way, it wasn't really called for. The food was very good, albeit served "family style" (except for entree's obviously), which isn't that bad, just something to note. But here's where it broke down a bit. While leaning over the table to pick up an empty dish, the waitress knocked over my beer (he was drinking yuengling since he's from out of town, and I joined) and it got all over my shirt/pants. While she was apologentic (and I learned she got quite a drilling from her boss later--- I heard about it from a mutual friend), and to be honest, I'm not the kind to get irate or anything like that... they didn't seem, to me, like there was any done to rectify the situation (I had to ask for extra napkins). While this might be expected at the local pizza shop, I would have thought a place as classy as Butcher and Singer would have somehow been more accommodating. I do realize too, that this is a very isolated incident, but I'm just letting you know that if you were to get hyped over either of the things I explained, you might want to go someplace else more fitting.

Talk about DELICIOUS! What a perfect place. Have been here a few times and have always been happy. Drinks are great, service is great, so is the inital greeting at the host stand. The first time I came i had the crab cocktail and the wedge salad. My god was that amazing! They perfected the wedge salad to where It was jsut so perfect combination of bacon, tomatos and the blue cheese dressing was not overpowering jsut perfect. Crab cocktail, full of crabmeat and delicious! Second time I was here I got the filet and my friend got the swordfish. WOW. both were right on point! So much flavor to the steak and the swordfish was seasoned so perfectly. MY GOD. My mouth is watering now. Even the mashed potatos were just the perfect combiantion of smooth, and creamy. DELICIOUS. worst part of the meal was when it was over! It was so sad. They have some talented chefs back there! could not have been happier with anything there. I cannot wait till I go with my fiancee! ;-)

Great steakhouse. Our group had a few different types of salads and seafood for appetizers. All were very good. We had the filets and one of our group had halibut. Very good. The wine list was thorough with a wide selection, particularly with American wines. Fantastic ambience and setting. Great restaurant.

I went to this restaurant with two others on a Friday night. We had a reservation, and we arrived twenty minutes early. We were told by the hostess that a table was not ready and we could wait in the bar area, which was full. There were many empty tables in the restaurant , so I went back to the hostess and asked if she was sure she couldn't seat us. She assured me that all tables were reserved and ours was not ready. We had a drink standing in a crowded bar. At our reservation time, the hostess informed us that our table was ready. She then escorted us to a table that had been empty since we walked into the restaurant!. Is it really worth a restaurant trying to get patrons to buy a drink in the bar prior to sitting down for dinner? For this reason, I can only give this restaurant three stars. The food was very good, and our server was excellent. But would not patronize this place again for refusing to seat us before our reservation time.

Very nice restaurant. The night we went it was very busy and the waiter served us at a bar table, due to the dining tables being reserved for the next 2 hours. But when we ordered our food and got it, he accommodated us by bringing another table over to us for more space. Even with how busy and crowded it was in there, he took care of us the whole night and made sure we were satisfied. I ordered the New York Strip steak and it was delicious. The steak sauce wasn't A1 and I never had it before but it went good with the steak. For a side I had fries which were also delicious. If you want to bring someone to a fine dining restaurant with great ambiance, bring them here.

Excellent excellent atmosphere. came here for restaurant week lunch with my friends. the service, despite us being late, was impeccable. the large shrimp in the shrimp cocktail was delicious and refreshing (it was hot during rest week). i had the ahi tuna salad, which was startlingly bland! it looked delicious and colorful and the tuna was well seared, but in total, the salad really was quite bland. i had a bite of my friends burger, which was good, but not life-changing. its regularly $10 (without restaurant week), and its a good burger in a nice atmosphere. rouge's burger is better though. ill come back for dinner and then review!

My boyfriend and I had a romantic dinner at B&S. He ordered a Caesar salad which they brought it out in two plates for us because we told them we were sharing it. (Great service point). My bf ordered the surf and turf: an 8oz lobster tail and 8oz filet mignon. The lobster was delicious and the filet was not bad. The outside was a bit over cooked. I ordered the porterhouse, the filet portion was a bit over seasoned and over cooked. We shared a side of mushrooms and onions. We ordered the right amount of food. Sadly we were too stuffed to have any dessert. The bartenders definitely know how to make great cocktails. Must try their signature drink the butcher Manhattan. The decor of the establishment is beautiful! Gorgeous over sized chandeliers and murals of dogs on the walls. The leather chairs were comfy too.

My dearest Stephen Starr, I am writing to inform you that although you have successfully managed to empty out my alligator skinned pocketbook, and while my finest pearls are now in disarray, my love for your creations has not lessened. No, dearest, I am afraid that I have succumbed to your sensuous steakhouse environment in the worst of ways. I have given myself so entirely to your succulent steak tartare, which lit up my plate as the red harvest moon casts its glow on the autumn fields. Your fried oysters induced nerve titillations mimicking peristalsis throughout my body. Crispy, fresh, and smooth, I've yet to experience another such dish. And the roe, those delicate red dots be-speckling the shellfish? A wonder in presentation and texture that architects and aspiring chefs could appreciate alike. That stuffed hash brown would have made my old Jewish grandmother quiver - never before has a latke been disguised so gracefully and in such a large portion so as to dupe even the most staunch of WASPS into enjoying its delights. The Baked Alaska gave me reason to smile - for even though at the end of this meal, I am in as much ruin as after the crash of '29, I cannot frown. A witty dessert for the daring - for those who love vintage music so much that they are inspired to purchase a gramophone after dining at Butcher and Singer - the Baked Alaska presented a paragon meringue (crispy on the outside, creamy, frothy and smooth on the inside) encompassing soft ice cream resting on a spongy cake. Sincerest regards (and truest regrets that it will be yet another 80 years before my oil stock so rises again that I would be allowed to dine at Butcher and Singer again), Ettya F.

Last Friday, April 20th was my first visit in almost one year. (See last year's review.) Unsurprisingly, I thought the high standards in the Steven Starr, high-end food and restaurant experience still remain. The maitre'd, manager and server I met were courteous and great listeners. Also the pricey medium-rare New York Strip, French Onion Soup and the Apple Crumb Cake were tasty. Well worth the price. If you plan to eat steak, I highly recommend that you ask the waiter for their tasty homemade steak sauce. It's not A-1, but this original recipe is slightly sweet and tangy. I'll definitely come back to celebrate for another "important" lunch.

Went out for a special occasion at Butcher and Singer (15th anniversary). We had high expectations, and somehow, they exceeded them! The decor was classy old school. (And you can't go wrong with the setting of the old Striped Bass.) The wine list had great options: nice high end bottles, as well as $40 +/- options. The cocktail options were very creative. The manhattan was amazing in particular. We both had soup, and I have to say the French onion was one of the best I've ever had. Our entrees were the cod (they were out of the halibut) and the delmonaco steak with a side of the home fried potatoes. Both were outstanding. Hoping to go back soon!!

We decided to take my mom to Butcher and Singer for her birthday after she, my wife and sister saw a show on Broad St. We had a reservation and we're immediately seated. The interior of Butcher and Singer is high end and on par with the other Top Steakhouses in the City. As we started to review the menu we noticed something that we hadn't seen on the website earlier, Porterhouse for 1, 2 or 3. (It is there if you open the .pdf version of the menu). Considering that, along with me, my dad and future brother-in-law made up 3/4 of my party at Peter Luger's, we quickly decided to let the girl's fend for themselves and order the Porterhouse for 3, medium rare. The steak came out out perfectly cooked and tasted incredible. The meat so flavorful and tender, we completely devoured it. We even picked at the bones, much to the dismay of Amy and the Moo waiting for their doggy bags. For sides we ordered the mashed potatoes and their Signature Stuffed Hashbrown. The mashed potatoes were very good and I'd definitely recommend them. The Stuffed Hashbrown is heavily recommended in other reviews on Yelp and I had very high hopes for it. Unfortunately, I didn't think it lived up to the hype. For the rating I'm conflicted. I'm bouncing back and forth between a 4 and a 5, a 4.5 star rating just sounds right. However since Yelp won't let me do it ... I'm going with 5 stars. It wasn't Peter Luger's, but we had the conversation and made the comparison so that's why I'm rounding up. I'd definitely recommend Butcher and Singer for a Steak in Center City.

I love this place! I've been there a few times and everything from the decor, high ceilings, service to the food is amazing. I've had a full blown steak dinner complete with the stuffed hash browns, asparagus, and creamed spinach and the porterhouse was very good. I've also taken advantage of their cheap burger deal for lunch and the burger is very delicious. The salads are good as well (I tried the seared tuna one) and the raw bar is not as good as Oyster House but still very good. The lunch service is just as good as dinner service but it's definitely more of a power lunch feel. Dinner is easily accomodated for a romantic date or a big group and the restaurant is enormous. I've sat at the bar as well and it's separated enough from the dining area to create a more casual feel. The cheesecake was delicious as well!

I came here for Restaurant Week and was not impressed. First off upon arrival, I was not offered coat check. The booths are small and my father had his large Eagles winter jacket so I am surprised. I really only point this out because at some point in the night I thought I saw 2 stuffed animals walking through the restaurant but closer observation, it was 2 ladies with fluffy fur coats. They must not have been offered coat check either. With a party of 3, we each sampled a different appetizer, entree and dessert. Nothing was spectacular, not even the filet mignon. The creamed spinach was too salty. The filet mignon ordered medium well came out medium rare. Service was spotty. Wine never came out until we were half finished with our entrees and that was after I had reminded the waiter. His response was that they were still making it at the bar. Hmmm...making wine. Funny. I was very excited to try this restaurant and I'm glad I did get the chance to but returning again?...I don't think so

I have been to Butcher and Singer several times, the service and food have been impeccable, I would say better then any other Starr restaurant in the city! Considering that one of these visits was during restaurant week, which notorious for a hit of miss experience. The portions are generous. The jumbo cocktail shrimp are plump and actually 'jumbo'! Also, the steak tartare comes out in a tasty heeping pile of perfect little cubes, and the oyster selection is always nice and fresh. I am a creature of habit when it comes to steak and order the filet mignon everytime, and it never disappoints, it always comes out the way I enjoy my cut of meat, in a cool red rare, the asphargus are the best I've ever tasted. My husband who usually always goes for steak at every steak house, wisely chose the Colorado Lamb Chops, and loved it!! How did I know? He did not say a word until he devoured every scrap of meat, nor did he ofter to share!! Be sure to save room for the baked alaska, I'm not normally a dessert kind of person, but it was a delicious work of art. Food aside, the ambiance is great- I feel like I'm stepping into a time warp every time, (in a good way) it has an old Hollywood supperclub, kind of feel. You'll have to see for yourself.

Came here for restaurant week and between the 5 of us, we ordered everything on the menu. We also ordered extra from the raw bar. Food was delicious. My filet mignon supposedly rare, was overcooked. The desserts were good, not too sweet. Our final bill was also reasonable. The place used to be a bank, so the decoration was neat. I would try it again after I make my way to Barclay Prime.

Could it possibly be that one pays a lump sum to devour delicious steak, delectable sides, and classic cocktails while still being treated like a normal human being rather than a "yes sir," "by all means, madam" upper class snob? Yes. This place has the goods without the stuffy, old money pretension. And thank god for it. A note to those who like their meat more medium and less medium rare: the correct way to state your preference is "medium rare plus."

We went here for my boyfriend's 30th birthday. The atmosphere was so cool...reminded us of boardwalk empire! the waiter immediately asked if we were celebrating an occasion and i let them know it was his birthday. We ordered wayyyy too much food. started off with the calamari which was amazing but way too big for two people. We always get the fillet whenever we go to steakhouses but decided to expand our palates for once and get the Delmonico. What a great choice!!!! Best steak i have ever eaten! Steak was perfectly cooked with a nice crust on it and perfectly seasoned. Don't forget the mushrooms and onions! For sides we also had the hashbrowns (massive and awesome) and creamed spinach (could have done without). We were so stuffed we couldn't order dessert but the waiter brought out a scoop of ice cream with a candle for his birthday which was nice. Overall A+ experience. Next time will be requesting a booth!

I decided that this would be the first upscale restaurant on my Philly burger tour so I made a lunch reservation and came in.As it usually is with these places the service was exceptional and everyone was really nice and the place was mixed with both well dressed and casually dressed people here's the breakdown Bun-- the bun was good and nicely toasted Meat--very high quality but not seasonEd Toppings--the fancy cheese and gourmet onions were adequate good but not outstanding

Went here for lunch, but still feel like I can judge the quality of the steak house based on what we ate. For lunchtime, they offer a $10.95 burger with cheddar, grilled onions, and thick cut pickles is quite the steal. It comes out tender and very juicy. Definitely a top 10 burger in Philadelphia if you are willing to dress up for lunchtime to get one. Also tried the rib eye steak sandwich, which was also good and came with onions and light horseradish on there. The sesame seeded bread was a nice touch, and very soft. The two came out already cut in half, and split between our plates. A very nice touch indeed. If the steaks are anything like the burger was, cannot wait to come back.

Wow. This place truly looks like it's out of the 1920's, and by that I mean, it feels like old school luxury. Dark, high ceilings, intricate chandeliers, and bow-tied wait staff all add to the atmosphere. It's also located right in the heart of downtown Philadelphia, and attracts some of the big names in town (Mayor Micheal Nutter was sitting like 5 feet from me!) So, here's how to enjoy this place. Don't be in a hurry, and don't be cheap. Seriously. Savor the extensive drink selection, pretend you're rich for a few hours. Have a scotch, or a vesper, and make conversation. Try the appetizers, all good, but save room for the piece de resistance: The Delmonico. This is the best steak I've ever had in my life, and I've had a lot of steak. It's a ribeye styles cut, but perfectly aged and cooked. I am still thinking about it and it's almost three weeks later. I'd rave more about it, but I'm not writing a thesis here, so I'll stop. The baked alaska was good for desert too. Go, spend some money, have a drink and enjoy the steak, this place is what dining out used to be.

One of the best steaks in Philadelphia, by far. The service is fantastic, the menu is simple, the food is extremely high quality, and the specialty cocktails are very unique. Try the Philly Sling for a spicy, sweet brandy concoction. The delmonico is definitely the most flavorful cut, but my filet mignon was excellent, too. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the ingredients in the dishes and accommodated my many food allergies with ease. Most of the foods are naturally gluten free and they take cross-contamination very seriously here. Definitely a "safe" spot for those with celiac disease. The decor is old-world steak house, which I love. I could find myself here on an evening, sipping port after a delicious meal. The brussel sprouts (with bacon, sauteed in butter), the Singer fries (roasted potatoes with onion, not traditional fries) and the Butcher salad (typical italian salad with lots of goodies in it) complimented my incredible filet very well. Definitely give this place a shot, even if you frequent other steak houses around Philly. It is slightly more intimate and simple than Del Frisco's (which is equally as good, in my opinion), which I love as well.

I had such high hopes for this place, but ultimately was let down. I went recently for restaurant week and had the steak. Since they are known for steak I was hoping to be blown away. Maybe it was just my steak, but I was not impressed. I was hoping for it to be juicer and have tons of flavor, but something was lacking.

So how good is this place? well im willing to pay 50 dollars in gas to drive there from NYC (and we have some good steakhouses here), spend another 200 on hotel cause I know im not going anywhere except the bed after im done with this place. Seriously good meat, with very good sides. And the seats were cozy and all in all, it made for a very romantic dinner. service was very good, and i cant tell u how good the Filet and the Bone in Rib Eye were. Highly recommend this place to anyone in philly!

Absolutely amazing. Those were the first two words that came out of my mouth when my friends asked me how it was. The place is beautifully decorated and definitely a great place for a romantic dinner. Our waitress Suzanne was incredibly helpful and friendly. Keep in mind that if you go here, you're planning to spend money so comments about the high prices are superfluous, and high expectations of food and service are mandatory. We started with the tuna sashimi which was absolutely divine - I would definitely order it again. The butcher salad was crisp and flavorful but nothing to write home about. I got the 12 oz filet mignon medium well but I would recommend going medium or rarer. Regardless it was still delicious. I preferred my boyfriend's dry aged porterhouse (very rare) which was probably the best steak he ever had. The random greens on the side seemed to be more for color on the plate than anything, but I think they should remove this altogether. The mushrooms and onions were so tasty, I wanted the recipe. The stuffed hash brown was impressive but heavily dairy based and the crispy edges were my favorite. We finished our meal with a baked alaska which was as delicious as everyone promised. We enjoyed our leftovers the next day. I heard their restaurant week is good too, and man is it tempting to go back this week just for that.

One of my wife's and I favorite restaurants on the east coast. Atmostphere is awesome, tall ceilings, dark eloquently lit. Great food, professional service. A bit pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Came here for my 30th bday. The staff was friendly and the food could not have been better. If you enjoy steak this is your place. Also try the stuffed hash browns they are amazing .

Excellent meal...just a bit overpriced for me! Dry aged Porterhouse had great flavor, hash browns and green beans are a must for sides...and Baked Alaska...even coffee tasted great! No complaints with food at all...just a little bit on the pricey side.

It was as if Homer Simpson was guest starring on Mad Men, but here I was, enjoying lunch at Butcher and Singer. I think, if I hadn't been with a regular B&S pro, Id have been turned aside quicker than a Giants fan at the Linc.- I kid, i kid,- they were an extremely friendly and accommodating group, from busboy to manager. Our server was as efficient and competent as she was adorable. It was a treat to be regarded so warmly. The decor was like being on a movie set for some fabulous movie directed by Orson Welles. Lots of marble and wood, with a charming mural of dogs, that would have been at home on both Al Bundy or Don Drapers wall. Im something of a burger connoisseur, and I can say with inflated authority, that B&S serves up one of the best burgers in Philly. I had heard that there was a burger special, and at under $10 , I thought it was a good deal...until I was told that the special is over and it used to be $5. That is as unreal as I can imagine for a place of its stature, who could easily charge $20 for that gem. The fries were just OK. I prefer them larger, but with a burger so intense, I consider them an above average garnish. We needed a little sweet to offset the large smack of savory, so we settled on a slice of chocolate cake. Its hard to impress a baker, even a bad one, but this was a pretty decadent slab of dessert. It only took a few bites to satisfy and it was equally as good leftover ( *cough* 45min after I got home) I wonder if Ill ever get the chance to go back. Based on the quality, and the relatively cheap prices, I think its a given. I think my usual lunches of the drive-thru variety just got their walking papers. This place is Homer Simpson approved!

Went here before we went to see a show at the Academy of Music. The staff accommodated our time restraint. The food was fantastic. Steak melted in my mouth. The side dishes are big enough for 2 to share! I would definitely recommend this place to people and I can't wait to go back again!

I eat at steakhouses a lot on business trips, from NYC to the Mexican border, and this is by far the best. It's very pricey but worth it. Try the steak tartare (don't be afraid to ask for some diced jalapenos in it), try the Delmonico, try the chocolate cake. You will not be disappointed.

I've been here for happy hour and restaurant week. This steakhouse is top-notch. The decor is straight out of the 20's era with dark wood, leather couches, dim lights. It's a great place to grab a drink near the bar and relax with friends in any of the lounge couches. Dinner here is also incredible. I've ordered the steak with mashed potatoes and to-die-for baked Alaska (yumm!). Another Starr restaurant that knows what they're doing!

Porterhouse for 2 was remarkable.. somewhat unorthodox Brussels sprouts. Sides were enough for 2 and balanced the meal. Excellent wine selection, friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great place to be scene and enjoy the best of Center City.

What a cool restaurant. Really loved the decor and the vibe this place has. Really cool high, open ceilings with 2 huge chandeliers that hang above the main dining area. I originally had reservations at Osteria but we missed them due to my late arrival to Philly. I called around and every place was booked until about 930 or 10pm. We walked by Butcher and Singer, and since ive heard of it before, felt like trying to get a seating anyways. Sure enough we were about to get a 9pm reservation... but i think we were lucky as the place was jam packed. Since it was about 1 hour early and B and S bar was too packed to get a drink, we walked to another lounge for cocktails. Came back at 9pm for a great dinner. Had the wedge salad, which was very good but different. Im used to Blue Cheese dressing where this had a kind of creamy thousand island-like dressing (still very good). For entree had the 12oz filet with onions and mushrooms as a side dish. By far one of the best mushroom side dishes ive had. Overall id say this place ranks above places like Ruth Chris, Mortons, and Flemings. Its right on par with Mastros with everything except the filet and dessert. The 12oz filet was very good, but mastros is still a notch or 2 better....and without butter cake you cant compete! I highly recommend B and S for a great steak night dinner.

I ate here last year and everything we ordered was great! Dry aged porterhouse was one of the best I have ever had. Great bernaise, big sides...everything you would hope for at a steakhouse. Also I loved the interior/atmosphere and wait staff was top notch. Very Philly.

I absolutely love this place! Two thumbs up! Perfect for a "grown-ip" night out on the town. Everytime I walk in I feel like I'm Marilyn Monroe in the 60's. The old Hollywood decor is arousing. They play a mix of Jazz & Frank Sinatra. The food is outstanding & the staff more then personable. I just wish it was closer to me! Love it!

Another restaurant week review...I know I know... This was a special evening for me and the beau. It was our 1 year anniversary and even though our pockets have been a little light, we knew we could properly celebrate thanks to Restaurant Week. Our server was amazing. The entire staff was pretty great. We tried to order different things so we could get a good sampling. I had the beet salad and he had the corn chowder for the first course. Both were pretty solid, though we both agreed the chowder was better. For the second course, we both got the filet, but he got the mashed potatoes and I went for the local squash. Both sides were ok, not really flavorful or memorable. I ordered my steak rare and he ordered his medium rare. When we were brought the steaks, they got switched even though we restated what we ordered. We didn't figure it out until we had already started eating. I feel like that is a mistake that should not happen here. Am I being picky? Maybe. He didn't seem to mind. I think the way people order their steaks is so personal, so it should be correct. I was also underwhelmed with the steak itself. The flavor was ok, but I have had better from my mother's kitchen. It wasn't the melty buttery flavorful bite that filet is supposed to be. Dessert was pretty good. The beau got the chocolate cake and though he loved it, I thought it was so so. I loved my creme caramel, though you had to eat it with the ice cream and not as separate elements. It was a romantic night with great company, but the meal itself was a bit underwhelming. I expected more Mister Starr. I don't want to say who, but somewhere around the corner is serving a better piece of meat...and that place rhymes with frel disco's...just saying.

Steak Heaven - My WW Co-#1 One of the greatest presents from my best friend was a recommendation to Butcher & Singer 2 years ago when my daughter started at school in Philly. Butcher & Singer is the complete experience. To me, it's all about the food. Every time, the steak is perfect and almost without compare. The ambiance is perfect - the old "club" murals and overall feeling adds to the experience. We order the Delmonico medium rare; they don't miss. I've also had fish in the past that was superb, but I missed the steak. My daughter and I went again last Monday. It was outstanding. Get the hash-brown side. It's wicked bad for you but so good. The same friend and I go every year to Charlie's in Celebration, FL. I realized Butcher & Singer is co-#1!

You're a man. You like meat. You understand the importance of a well marbled cut of meat and anything above medium is just offensive to you. Butcher and Singer will appeal to your inner Mad Men fantasies minus Don Draper's shady past. The dining room is dimly lit from the massive brass chandelier hanging from the impossibly high ceilings. There is a bar to the right of the entrance lined with candles and a small but impressive liquor selection. The dining room is lined with rows of tufted banquettes on two floors with tables and very comfortable chairs well spaced in between. A giant gold bullhead is mounted on a focal wall in the back of the dining room pulling together the traditional elegant steakhouse concept. It's a bold statement but you can't go wrong with anything you order here but I will share some personal favorites. The wedge salad is one of the best I have ever eaten. The shrimp cocktail is enormous and fresh. Oh, if you like French Onion soup get it here, but break the top and give it a few minutes to release some steam. Your tongue will thank you for it. Obviously it's all about the steak here. The filet is a very good safe bet but I would recommend the Delmonico. The Butcher Delmonico done medium rare is one of the finest steaks I would dare to say in the Mid-Atlantic. Sides are served separately so you will have to order them if you wanted something to go along with the meat. The hash brown is enormous and easy to share but do not skip on the Brussels sprouts. Your mom would blush for have ever served them any way other than Butcher prepares them. If you don't think you like them think again. If you somehow have room for dessert go for the Baked Alaska. It's a rare dessert to find these days only due to how much goes into the production. It's a fun balance of warm and cold with varying flavors and textures. I have sampled all of the desserts over the years I have dined here and can confidently say they're worth saving room for. Go to Butcher with clients you want to impress, to treat yourself for being an awesome person, to prove to your parents you're a grown up, to ask your lady friend a life changing question, the list goes on. Enjoy the impeccable customer service and a meal that makes you feel like you're a bigshot on Madison Ave in the 50's.

Great place. Food is delicious - they know how to cook steaks. Also had the stuffed hash browns which were yummy. Had the iceberg wedge salad, and their variation includes Russian dressing along with the bleu cheese crumbles/bacon bits/hard boiled egg crumbles - very cool! Service was attentive and knowledgeable and the decor is old-skool steakhouse. Highly recommend!

Oh Butcher & Singer. I am not a Starr hater, but I'm going to sound like one. All atmosphere, no substance. Other reviews have pointed out that medium rare is closer to rare, and the waitress said the same thing. I wanted normal medium rare for my Delmonico so she said go for medium. I received a steak that was 1/4 medium, 3/4 medium well to well. Glad I spent time pointlessly splitting hairs on how I wanted it done. My wife's halibut was also dry and overcooked. Baked Alaska was extremely mediocre, as I should have guessed when it had about a 10 minute turn around time. No fun table side finish to be had.

If you're into your steak - and in Philadelphia - this is the place. I was taken here by relatives and the entire dining experience was top-notch, making it a great place to take a date or to celebrate a great occasion - but not for the budget conscious. From the minute you step into the door, you are taken back to the 1920's with dim lights, high ceilings, black and white tiled floors, red booths and soft jazz. It is an amazing setting and the service is just as good. You won't feel like you're not being looked after here. Food gets better. Would recommend the Porterhouse Steak (Signature) as well as the hash browns which are amazing. Excellent food isn't hard to find in Philadelphia - but great experiences are and Butcher and Singer has some great old fashioned top-notch service. This pips Le Bec Fin for service, size and ambience with similarly awesome food.
