The 5 stars is for the ice cream. Which of course, is why I came....and ok, the parking. As our car club descended upon this place with about 8-10 Sebring Convertibles. The service was top notch! Nice one scoop black raspberry on a waffle cone. Some people got more than one scoop. I think they are still eating those cones 4+ hours after they got them. LOTS of ice cream! One downside is no chairs/tables here, so you can take it outside and sit on the retaining wall. That worked for me. Definitely worth checking out!

I went to Rakestraw's the other day for some ice cream and it was absolutely delicious! It's a nice mom n' pop ice cream parlor practically inside in-town Mechanicsburg. When I was there, there was a constant flow of people coming in and out, primarily on foot. I purchased Cookies n' Cream with a chocolate-dipped waffle cone. The cone was fresh and the ice cream definitely tasted homemade. I honestly went inside to grab a quart of Moose Tracks before I left! Which was also very delicious (eating a bowl right now actually). Last, but not least, the prices were fair. For two single scoop chocolate dipped waffle cones (bought one for the roommate), it came out to a little over $11 after taxes. Don't forget that the special cone was a dollar something extra though! For the quart of ice cream, it came out to a little over $7 after taxes. Hope this review was helpful!

Pretty neat mom n pop ice cream shop. The choices are plenty, the cones are fresh and the service was nice. They give samples too! To describe the interior, lets go back in time, where cell phones, tablets and hover boards where a thing of the future. Where you wore your Sunday best to go on an outing for some ice cream. That is how I felt at this shop. I ordered the snickers ice cream on a waffle cone. It was very pleasant. The ice cream tasted clean and creamy. I am not a fan of artificial thingd. My teens had no complaints about portion since the scoops where generous. I will definitely return for a sweet treat again. As family of six we spent $23.00 on ice cream. The husband and I are pleased!

I absolutely love this ice cream store! The selection of ice cream's is fabulous and the homemade ice cream cakes are to die for. This is definitely the place that you want to come to get an ice cream cake for your special occasion. An added bonus is that they have yummy frozen dog treats. My little pooches just adore them. Don't miss out on this long time Mechanicsburg gem.

I love that there is an ice cream place like this on the west shore! But it is pricey $$$! And it could use a place to sit and eat your ice cream (like a picnic table or something). You can get the same exact ice cream way cheaper at turkey hill.

I am so glad I found this place. I tried two flavors and both were delicious. The ice cream was very creamy and full of fresh flavor. I also got some of the old time sodas. So far I have only tried the birch beer but that was very good too.

No place to sit. The grit in the ice cream is because of the fact it is made with milk and flavored powder. The powder separates when the ice cream thaws and re freezes. Not worth the money. Didn't they use to make their own ice cream? What happened to this Mechanicsburg icon?

I don't know what others are complaining about the prices for. A scoop is just over $2 and a descent size which I find to be a fair price. They have a ton of choices as well as ice cream sandwiches and prepackaged kinds. We got to sample a few and they were all pretty good. The location is great, its alot bigger and nicer than I expected and they have a huge private lot to park at. The girl working was nice, kids were playing outside, this is a great place to go with our family for a treat on a hot summer day!

I am liking this place more and more. After moving from an area that was known for it's ice cream, it took us a while to find this one. There are many flavors and cone options. They also make their own ice cream cakes. Everything they sell is from other local companies. There are about 20 parking lot spaces and is a good place to eat ice cream in your car. There is a wall that you can sit on to eat but the car is more comfortable. They might have a picnic table or two out in the Summertime, but i can't remember.

As mentioned above the prices are way too high. I like the off street private parking, but having a nice place to sit is more important to me. My wife and I generally go some place that we can sit and chat. We wanted to like it does that count?"

I'm visiting town for the week and after dinner tonight I suggested ice cream. We ended up at Rakestraw's because my mother is opposed to chain ice cream, the experience wasn't what we expected after quite a few years away. First of all, the ice cream was pretty expensive. I can get the same amount of ice cream for the same (or even less!) at ice cream shops in Boston. The first ice cream I requested was on the menu, but it wasn't available. So I asked if they had a vanilla peanut butter cup (instead of just chocolate peanut butter cup - I don't like chocolate that much!), and the kid said yes, but what he scooped for me was vanilla with a peanut butter swirl. It was tasty, but not quite what I was looking for. And the boy who scooped my ice cream onto a cone didn't do a very good job of it. Instead of making sure the ice cream was pressed into the cone (so ideally, I'd only be watching for melting ice cream) he let the ice cream rest precariously on the tip of the cone...so naturally it fell on me. I was not impressed. And now I have to wash the clothes I had been wearing. I kind of wish that we'd driven further to try Leo's, my mom's favorite ice cream place. Maybe I'll put it on the list for the next time I'm in the midstate.

Way over priced for the quality and the ice cream has a strange kind of sandy texture. This was a one and done stop for us. With Hans Frozen Yogurt so close by there s no way we go back to Rakestraw's.

A old school ice cream joint, I visit anytime I am in the area. Highly recommended! It is a little pricey but well worth the extra couple of bucks.

An old school ice cream shop that's been around for more than 20 years. Good flavors to choose from and none of the soft serve stuff filled with air.

Just tried this place last Sunday and it was pretty good. A little more expensive than Handel's (see my review), but good tasting ice cream nonetheless. They serve Garber's Ice Cream from Winchester, Va and have a decent selection of flavors. Definitely check it out!
