Really great and inexpensive (for the quality and amount)

All of the staff was incredibly welcoming when we arrived. The chef had prepared an amazing brunch buffet with a variety that I've never seen. They had endless freshly made crepes, all you would like trips to the breakfast, sweet and savory items. My son will be attending PSU in Erie this fall and Bertrand's will be where we have brunch whenever I have a chance to visit.

This was my first time dining in a French restaurant and I have heard good things about Bertrand's however I was not fully impressed. Nothing really stood out and seemed "French" to me. I'm not an expert on French cuisine but I have had on many occasions great French onion soup. The French onion soup at Bertrand's however was not even edible to me. Cheese was not even melted on the top or hanging over the sides. And the broth had a strong herb flavor. The rest of the meal was just ok. Nothing exciting or worth the prices by far. I do however think the staff was very welcoming and friendly. I would personally not return here. I understand this city you don't have many choices but keep in mind that you may not be very impressed. Sorry this is a No for me.

Came here with a friend. It was a first time for both of us. It was a wonderful experience. I got the lamb, which was really rich in flavor and juicy! Our server Nicholas was very friendly and welcoming. I was impressed with how well he knew the menu and recommended a tasty red wine! Would definitely come back if I am in the area. Overall, food was great, friendly service, and very accommodating!

Best in Erie, bar none. Australian lamb shanks, pork shank, salad with warm goat cheese, escargots, Kronenbourg on tap, and mind-blowing desserts. Not a bad option on the menu, and fine dining at its finest. Our fifth visit, and our 20th wedding anniversary. Simply outstanding.

My husband brought me here for my 30th birthday. Our waiter was excellent and the food was great. The atmosphere was pleasant and relaxing. The waiter managed to pick the perfect wine for my husband and I each on the first try. We will definitely be back.

My husband and I wandered into Bertrand's late on a Friday night after an exhausting day of work and then 2 hours in the car. It had been a day full of disappointments and we were crabby and starving. We arrived in time for the last seating. The waitress was great (I can't remember her name, though...so sorry, great waitress!) She was polite and friendly and attentive, but not overly so. She suggested some wines and apps for us. The wine was great, but the app was not our style. It was a raw salmon plate (neither of us realized it was raw...oops). Hubby got one of the veal dishes and I got the steak frites. Everything was perfectly cooked and beautifully plated. It was 10pm and they were closing, so I wasn't going to order dessert. The waitress insisted we at least hear about them. She was so excited that we went ahead and ordered the crepe with apples and cinnamon and pecans. It was absolutely the highlight of the meal and it saved a totally crappy day. We will stop in to Bertrand's whenever we are in the area. It was a lovely experience.

On a return trip from Niagara falls and based upon Yelp my friends and I ate here. This restaurant passes as upscale for Erie but the food served here is nothing one couldn't make at home. The charcuterie plate we had was good, nothing special and could easily be put together after one trip to any Whole foods. The veal cutlets I had for dinner were as I said nothing special and something one with basic kitchen skills could make themselves. I was underwhelmed by the food and overwhelmed by the price.

My boyfriend and I came to this restaurant on a Saturday Aug 22, expecting a nice romantic dinner during our weekend getaway. The food was not bad, but the service was by far, our most terrible experience in dining out. When we first entered this place a waiter, rudely, shouts at us from far away (not even coming close to greet us): "Do you have reservation?". We say no. After a while she comes and sits us somewhere saying: " I'll be back with you in 5 mins, don't worry, and my name is Stephanie". All this yet with no word of greeting and welcoming. She comes back after around 10 mins, joking and laughing to our face, "By this time you've had time to memorize the menu by heart". And she doesn't ask if we want parts of the menu to be explained or anything. After we are done with the entree, we are waiting for Stephanie or some other waiter to come and either get us the check or tell us about desserts. We are waiting for around 15 minutes, then after attending other guests, she comes and makes a weird disrespectful joke along the lines of "oh, while I am here let me show you dessert before I forget." After few minutes she comes back and blankly stares at us, without a word, so we assume in her world this means: what you would like for dessert, and so we order something. When she brings the dessert, she rudely drops it on our table, again with no words. After we are done, we were waiting endlessly for Stephanie to come and bring us the check, it didn't happen, so we decided to just stand up and go to the counter, pay and leave. Sometimes having Ramen noodles is more delicious than dinning out and being treated disrespectfully, like at Bertrand's Bistro.

Everyone seems to love it here, I just don't understand why. My boyfriend and I decided that we would try out Bertrand's for a date night only to find out that half the menu was veal and they were out, the service was slower than molasses, and the food was just ok (definitely not worth the price). On a positive note they do have a huge wine selection and when the waiter finally did make it to the table suggested a delicious bottle. To say our dinner service was long is an understatement. We did go back for the brunch that everyone raves about a few weeks after. The food was good, especially since it sits in warmers, the crepes are made to order, but for some odd reason it takes forever to get served. We ordered mimosas and didn't receive them until half way through our breakfast. Brunch is good but I'm still not sure it was worth the money. The price is very steep for not including anything but orange juice as a drink. After everything we haven't really gone back, there are better options elsewhere for the money.

Another excellent meal. We come here every time we visit family and are never disappointed. Friendly, enthusiastic wait staff. Delicious and good size portions.

So accommodating and amazing!!!! We were in town for our anniversary weekend and heard of this place, but did not have a reservation. We went in anyway to see if we could be seated even though they were full for brunch. Tom was just great and made it happen for us! He managed to squeeze us in due to a cancellation and creative seating so that we could enjoy this brunch and experience Bertrand's. We will be back to try dinner and will make reservations in advance now that we know. The food was perfect and crepes were so yummy. I highly recommend this place and thank Tom and the owner for allowing us have such a nice brunch.

I went to a French restaurant and didn't get a crepe. My bad. But in my defense, when there's three tables worth of buffet food in front of you, the last thing you are thinking is... let's wait to order a crepe! I know, I know. Totally my fault, but seriously, put food in front of me and I'm gonna woof it down. For $19 it's not a bad deal, especially because it includes a mimosa or bloody mary. I was excited to see eggs benedict on the table, but thought it was weird they don't have hollandaise sauce out. They did bring it out to me when I asked them though. Most of the other options were a little bit disappointing and not necessarily "french themed" if you ask me. But I only took 4 years of french in school... so what do I know! But the bread pudding... dear lord it was good! Worth the brunch? Probably not, but pretty darn close. I'd perhaps come back to try the crepes, I'd definitely come back for the bread pudding alone though!

From the escargot appetizer to the main course of a French prepared seafood with monk fish the food was wonderful... Our waiter Nicholas was energetic and made the experience all the better....

Had our first experience at Bertrand's and will definitely be returning to try other menu items. We had a reservation and were seated at a quiet little table in the corner. Between the two of us we had: the escargot and fois gras appetizers, he had a filet and I ordered the lamb and we each had two glasses of wine. Everything was very delicious and our waiter was very friendly and helpful. ($$$)

Best restaurant in Erie, PA! Always amazing, masterfully put together culinary delights! Bertrands serves up the creamiest Creme Brule, a decadent Dacquoise, and blissful dessert Crepes. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the wine selection. It's my go-to place when I want to celebrate a special occasion with a four course meal or just have an espresso and dessert with a friend. Skip the chains and try one of Erie's greatest little gems in the city!

After hearing my boyfriend's friends describe the succulent chicken special they enjoyed previously in the evening this past Saturday, my boyfriend and I decided to enjoy a late dinner at Bertrand's Bistro. Neither one of us had dined here before so we were not sure if reservations would be needed, even though it was 8:30pm when we were ready to dine. Luckily, there were only two other tables in the restaurant at the time, so no worries! We were seated at a table by the window and quickly greeted by gentleman who brought over waters and menus and left us to browse. The wine list is very extensive and is all French wines (captain obvious-type statement, lol). Mostly by the bottle but they have enough of a variety by the glass that you should be able to find something for your palate. I went with an Alsace region Riesling, which the server described as dry, however, in my opinion, it was not sweet but wasn't really dry either-very light and refreshing though. While the chicken special sounded delicious (it was chicken stuffed with peaches, gorgonzola, spinach-and some other items that I can't recall), there was also a soft shell crab special, which we decided to share as our entree. I love soft shell crab so i was eager to taste Bertrand's version. My boyfriend had never had soft shell crab before but was game to try it too. It was "meh"-I've had better soft shell crab in NYC and Maryland but for a smaller city, this was acceptable. I wish I could recall exactly what the sauce was because it was amazing-not overly sweet with a hint of vinegar too. I loved the presentation of the lemon wedge in a pouch that you squeeze in order to release the lemon juice. The dish came with a veg and starch as well. We chose garlic green beans (over brussell sprouts) and garlic mashed potatoes (over new potatoes fried in duck fat. I let my bf pick the starch and he went all semi-healthy on me haha). The dish had 3 crabs and was the perfect size to share when paired with an appetizer. We chose the charcuterie plate to start with. I was not a fan of the venison, however, the smoked sausage was possibly the best charcuterie sausage I have eaten! The liver mousse and the pate were tasty as well, but the highlight for me was the sausage. It came with pickles and stone ground mustard. While bread (with balsamic vinegar and olive oil) was served prior to our meal, I wish there were crostinis or crackers paired with the charcuterie plate to round out the dish more. While they have an entire page listing of crepes for dessert (as well as a dessert tray), we were both too full to partake in anything additional, however, the crepes looked quite tasty, particularly the nutella crepe. The charcuterie plate was $14, the wine I ordered was $9, and the crab special was $32 so, in my opinion, this was a rather pricey meal and I don't feel the quality of the food matched up to the advertised prices. The menu is very heavy on veal but does also offer some fish, chicken, and steak dishes, in addition to their daily specials. I'm not overly familiar with French cuisine so I'd like to return to Bertrand's and try some other dishes and see if those are more pleasing to my palate than just "meh".

Yet again another Birthday breakfast that was amazing!!! As always food was delicious staff attentive and professional!!! Fresh fruit available w chocolate fountain-yum! Chef created dishes, fresh menu...always have new items on buffet so you never get the same buffet twice!! Never leave without a smile and full tummy! The restaurant is small so it's better to make reservations to ensure a seat ... By the window is best!

Excellent! So, I love brunch and while visiting the town of Erie for a wedding I found a place to kill time while waiting for my flight back to the DMV. All of the food was delicious! There was a great selection of food items which included: scrambled eggs with pepper jack cheese, red potatoes, french pancakes, chicken and spinach lasagna, breaded fish, quiche, mini pizzas, fresh fruit bar, salad bar, and the list goes on! Must haves are the crepes, the creme brûlée, and the bread pudding. Beverages offered included fresh orange juice, mimosas, french pressed coffee, and bloody Mary's. The orange juice is included the awesome price of $22 with all other items available for an extra charge. My drink of choice was the french pressed coffee which was to die for! The staff was friendly and the food was hot and yummy! If you're ever in Erie, PA you must visit this place for Sunday Brunch!

Had the Chilean sea bass. It was excellent, light, and bursting with flavor. Really a well balanced dish through and through. Our server nick was full of information about the preparation of the food and excited to share his knowledge with us. I can appreciate someone who cares about the details of what comes out of their kitchen. Great experience and I'll be back again.

Did the Sunday brunch. Wow...just, Wow. Deliciousness. Also had the Easter Brunch. I am now ruined. Although I've been to brunch buffets that had more, they certainly didn't have better. A don't miss for those who love food.

I discovered this restaurant while looking for the thai restaurant down the street. It was intriguing, so we said we would return. I had an enjoyable experience and the food was pretty tasty, but we likely won't be back. First, the decor tried too hard to be "French." There were posters of various wine regions in France, many Eiffel Towers and other touristy type stuff. It was a little too overdone and they would be much better off with just a few accents. Our server did not speak french. I guess that isn't the end of the world and may have been a high expectation for a restaurant in Erie, but it sort of turned me off because I expected that the servers would know French in a French restaurant. I found the menu to be a little disappointing. It was pricey for what it was and not that creative. I expected more from a trained French chef. That being said, both entrees we ordered were very tasty and well prepared and the portions were larger then you would typically get in a fancy restaurant. Service was good, food was good, but prices and decor not up to par.

Mediocre experience. The whole dining time totaled over two hours. They forgot to bring any bread out with the fromage. The food took over an hour to arrive. Then, they informed a member of the party that there was no veal. She ordered something else which magically came out in five minutes. They did make it right however which was nice. I ordered shrimp which there was three small sized shrimp with crab mixture on the plate. The shrimp was overcooked and tough. The Brussels sprouts were great. The other member ordered steak which looked amazing. Dessert was good. Waiter was courteous.

I tend to give higher ratings to restaurants that try something different, even if they miss their goals. The food was actually the highlight. Portions were ample and done well-enough. However they lacked much of what would strike you as "French". The most awkward part of the experience was the service. I had to wonder if any of them had even dined in a restaurant before they started to work in one. Slow, inconsistent, and just downright weird, our server left us baffled for most of the time we were there. An example: taking half full drinks off the table and stating that most customers simply preferred a refill on a glass that was already 'broken-in'. Now... just how is a glass 'broken-in'? For a Martini?!? Seating was arranged by her pointing to the dining room in an unspecific direction that may as well have been a gesture to the Thai place down the block. With only two tables seated, she couldn't have been too busy. The in-dining entertainment was only remarkable in the fact that there shouldn't have been any. For 30 minutes the other server, for the only other table seated, continued a loud witty banter with the date of the man at the next table. I couldn't understand how two servers could be so thoroughly clueless. We may have forgotten the dining experience completely except for the staff who appeared to be setting us up for a completely unfunny prank. Best of luck to the place. I've dined there twice, and I typically reserve my opinion until eating there at least that many times, just in case my first experience was an "off" night. Update the decor, change or train the staff. Otherwise you have an an expensive restaurant, for Erie standards, that offers a completely awkward and uncomfortable dining experience.

Wonderful restaurant and charm. I felt I was living in Europe again. The dinner portions are large. Will go back.

Dinner tonight-11/9/13. Entire experience was very good. Server was very attentive. Didn't quite get my special order right , but came close. My wife had the grouper - excellent. I had the vegetarian entree. They forgot to leave off the cheese as requested, but did leave out the butter. Both soups were excellent. Wines were excellent. Pricey , but overall a very good experience for a special occasion.

I love french food and I love brunch so my Sunday brunch visit was very pleasant. My boyfriend and I went in not really knowing that it was a prix fix, meaning that the price was set for all brunch. So we ended up paying about $19 a person. When you walk in, everyone is dressed semi-formal, which was very cute. We were underdressed but no one seemed to mind. They sat us in a room and I was asked immediately what I'd like to drink. Drinks aren't included in the brunch, FYI. We got up and had the option between eggs benedict (Yum!), sausage, fish, veggies, and some other food that I can't recall at this time. All were delicious. The highlight was by far the dessert. They had a chocolate fondue fountain!!! How amazing is that!? I think I had one plate of normal food and then 2 plates of desserts. I had the bread pudding, the creme brulee, the cookies, and I made 3 chocolate croissants with the fondue fountain. Then I also had a custom made crepe (included, so its definitely worth it). My crepe had blueberries, strawberries, vanilla ice cream, and Nutella. It was made perfectly. My bf had the orange marmalade with Grand Mernier sauce on it. He loved how light yet rich it was. I was a huge fan of Bertrands and I can easily say it was my best meal in Erie. Bon Appetit!

This was our first stop of dining in Erie and the recommendations my friend received did not lead us astray. We ordered the charcuterie and frommage plates which were accompanied by nicely toasted bread to kick off our meal. I then ordered the scallops for my main entree. Everything was delicious and Bertrand's has a nice selection of wines. You will not leave Bertrand's hungry! I would hands down go back. This is quite the gem of a place!

This is the best place to eat in Erie. Everything on the menu was absolutely incredible from the onion soup to the bread they serve with meals to the delicious entrees themselves. Average entree is in the mid $20's and the portion size makes it really well worth it. The crepes for dessert were a great ending. Overall incredible food!

Bertrand's is excellent. I've tried other "fine dining" establishments throughout the area, but not one of these would survive in a larger city with a more competitive restaurant industry. Not so for Bertrand's. They're on a different level entirely. I've been once for dinner and once for brunch. Each experience was an absolute joy. Everything I ordered was excellent, so I'll only comment on dishes which stood out as truly exceptional. Cream of Mushroom Soup - The best I've ever had, and I consider myself something of a soup gourmand. Order it. You won't regret it. Charcuterie Plate - Each of the selections was lovely but the smoked duck and pate were most enjoyable. French Fries - Fried to perfection in goose fat. Very possibly the best I've ever had. Bread Pudding - Without question the best I've ever had. By a large margin. After eating this I was unfit to drive for the better part of an hour. The bread pudding at Bertrand's is wildly good. Crepes - I'm not a crepe expert but these were subtle, delicious, and wanted for nothing. Apologies for the repetitive comments... but when something is so good as to be the best, to describe it at length would feel pretentious.

This review is for Sunday Brunch only, We had a lovely time at Bentrand's Bistro. When we walked in I felt like we had been invited to be a guest in someone's dining room. This place has warmth, character and charm; not cold, shiny, newness. There are a ton of items on the buffet, fresh fruit, bread pudding, eggs, bacon, and lots of other french offerings that sadly I can't spell. Crepes are made to order and you can try as many as you'd like. They were offering one savory crepe which was delicious and a few of the sweet standard french such as Crepes Suzette (yummy!). You could also get about 5 other types of sweet crepes with ice cream. Come hungry because at $20 per person it is a bit of a splurge however the price is fair for what you get (drinks not included). I'd also recommend making reservations ahead of time and taking an earlier time slot vs. a later one. We went towards the end (1PM and it ends at 2 PM) and while we were not rushed and quite a few people were still dining, I felt a few of the items weren't as hot as I'd like. We can't wait to see what dinner here is like!
