couldn't rate lower than 1 star, have been to this establishment in previous years. The food and service prior was above par for Italian restaurants at the time. I visited the establishment on Saturday having made reservations earlier in the week. Upon arriving, we were informed that there was a large party in the party room, but service was not going to be an issue. Upon seating, drinks and appetizers were served very quickly. The bread was good, not as good as it was previously. The antipasto appetizer had the correct ingredients, the lettuce was a bit more wilted, but that might have been due to the number of people being served via the party. After 20 minutes, no main course, after an hour, no main course, no server was to be found. An hour and half, I asked for one of the water servers to find a manager to find out what was going on with our main courses. The water server did not know who the manager was. A person in a black shirt arrived at our table, smiling, and stating that due to the party food the main course was going to be delayed. It is one thing to come around 20 minutes, but an hour and half later. No excuse. If it was Ruth Chris or Morton's, then waiting an extra hour for food would probably be worth the wait. When the food did finally arrive, it was cold, and dry. Neither the waiter nor manager came over to stop by to ask how the meal was. When the bill arrived, the waiter stated they discounted the meal slightly. The restaurant has indeed cut corners in the quality and service. The vegetables were not fresh, nor was the main course. The food and service were very disappointing compared to the food and service it was a few years ago.

Authentic Italian food in a pleasing atmosphere. And left overs for tomorrow night and maybe the next.!

The best Italian food I've had in years, maybe. It's a seasonal tradition. Great beer. Great garlic bread. Fantastic service. I recommend any pasta dish, and the pork parmigania. The latter is one of my favorite dishes imaginable. This is my favorite place to eat in the greater Harrisburg area.

As of October 8th at least, they are open! I highly recommend this restaurant.

I went here for a rehearsal dinner. They had a small room set aside for parties. It was cozy with 4 round tables, but the space was ample for a family gathering. I asked for a black napkin, no problem! No white lint on my black dress. The service was exceptional. We had several waitresses who kept track of orders, drinks, salads, and appetizers. We had a nice selection for entrees; pasta, lasagna, steak, chicken, & fish. The dishes were nicely sized and tasty. The dessert selection was brought in on a tray. The actual dessert was twice the size and delicious. I ate it all! Overall it was a lovely evening.

Best Italian food in Carlisle hands down. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful inside and provides a nice setting for dinner. Perfect for celebrations and a nice dinner. The menu is extensive and everything is terrific there. Definitely worth it.

Rillo's is a large Italian restaurant that must have quite a history. Still, when it comes to pasta I am a fussy individual and my meal here didn't stand out among other contenders. The soup was very good and the pasta was OK too, however I don't feel it was worth the price tag. The nicest thing about Rillo's is the decor. It has that "I bet the mafia eats here" feel to it: with those rounded booths and elaborate table settings. It makes for a nice romantic setting what with the dim lighting and all, however if you are looking to be wowed on the culinary creations I have to warn you that it didn't happen for me. Service was good, meal was filling, but I don't see myself returning.

This was my first visit here in about 20 years. The reviews I read made it a somewhat complicated decision as to return or not. My friend and I decided to give it a chance. After being seated our server was quite helpful answering all our questions about the menu and the specials for the night. I ordered the seafood bisque which was quite tasty. For my entree I ordered the lobster and shrimp d'ablo over fettuccine. Again, quite tasty. The dish was hot and the fettuccine was not overcooked much to my delight. I'm a real stickler when it comes to pasta. I hate overcooked pasta and very rarely ever order it out for that very reason. The dessert special was red velvet cake. Unfortunately I had no room for dessert. Overall a nice dining experience. My only issue was the poor lighting. At my age a little more light helps reading the menu a little easier. Will I return here again? Probably.

I have been here three times. The first, because it comes highly recommended by many locals and I was new to the area. The second, because I wanted to give it a second chance because my first time there was such a flop. The third, was not my decision but I was along for the ride. All three times reinforced that I will not be coming back. Why? Staff is friendly but lacks proper fine dining training, which contradicts the ambiance of the restaurant. The food is consistently prepared under or over cooked. The garlic bread is basically white bread with a little olive oil and barely any garlic. The meat quality is lackluster, and the pasta dishes are served with a sparse amount of sauce, while the salads are served with too much dressing. Even the dark chocolate cake for dessert was dry.

Came highly recommended by family from that area. Place had a good old Italian vibe to it. Nothing on the menu or the plate really blew me away. I sampled various dishes off of many plates so I was able to get a good variety of meals. While mine (Salmon) was the worst of the lot, none of the others made me really salivate. Atmosphere and company made up for lackluster food.

This is a hard review for me to write but I need to write it up. Rillo's used to be my all time favorite restaurant. I grew up going here and I am now 29 years old. It would be a weekend favorite with the exception of going throughout the week as well. Let alone a weekly visit straight down to take out for lunch and dinner. When I was very little, I was allowed to go back into the kitchen to pick out my own ice cream for dessert. It was truly a family owned business with the atmosphere to match it. The busy weekends, parties, birthday celebrations, and times when we had to rent out part of the restaurant for funeral receptions after a sad day. My history goes way back with this restaurant which is why it's hard for me to review it as it is now. Up until a few years ago, this would have been a 5 star review. Because of my history with this restaurant, I know the difference between what used to be and what it is now. I have not visited the restaurant in almost a year. We stopped going September 2014. What did it for me was the grated cheese that is on the tables. I use this cheese literally on everything. I use to take quarts and pints of this home with me. However, something changed horribly with this cheese. I noticed it when we first got to the restaurant the one night. Yellow, grated more finely, and it tasted worst than Kraft Parmesan cheese. I asked for new cheese and they pull some from a different table. It tasted the same. Asked for some from the back. Still tasted the same. Even the Caesar salad tasted differently because of this. Our visit to the restaurant after this, same situation. I figured I would give it another chance. I even asked why the cheese was different. They insisted it was the same. The difference is that the original grated cheese was white, fluffy and tasted fresh. It had a unique taste to it and the kind they had out on the two visits we did last Fall did not taste like the original. Since I use this on everything I order, it kind of ruined the entire experience and meal for me. Because it happened for a second time, I did not want to try for a third. The last few visits my husband complained of the chicken parmesan being overcooked. We also learned why the sauce looked very dark and it is because it is not made fresh daily anymore. They reuse sauce that could be a week old. Now whether or not this is true, I don't know. But it would make sense since the it never tastes fresh anymore. I even noticed it with my take home meatballs. The food never seems fresh and well prepared anymore. It doesn't have that special touch that it used to. And yes I know the restaurant was sold a few years back but the past two years it just hasn't been the same. I've also noticed the lack of management walking around. Within the last year of our last visit, the owner never seemed to be around inside the restaurant. Managers never seemed to walk around like they used to and this may sound stereotypical but there were high school age teens behind the front desk that did not seem to have any clue as to what to do. This restaurant has severely gone down hill. I miss what it used to be with amazing food, amazing atmosphere and the overall experience. The restaurant is for sale from what I read in the newspaper. I just hope whoever buys it will restore it to what it used to be.. straight down to the grated cheese that is on the tables.

This is a family run business with no family members present and is unfortunately on auto pilot. Rillo's used to be the place to go. I have not been in years due to poor reputation but went with a large group mid week. The place was dead. The original room was as it was 20 years ago, the bottles of wine around the walls are awful, the music is awful and too loud. There is no atmosphere. I think this has always been dingy but it never bothered me before as the food was so good. The service was good and cheerful. With only a dozen customers it should be. The garlic toast was plentiful but cold before it reached the tabale. The red wine was served in a white wine glass. The Rillo's house oil and vinegar dressing used to be the best, no more what they have now is not a patch on how it used to be. The salad portion was larger but with out their dressing I did not finish mine. The calamari was bland, the peppers were few and far between, compare this with Left Bank in York calamari with hot banana peppers. My old favorite Chicken Venitiziana was good although they have cut way back on the prosciutto. No manager or owner came to the table. Unfortunatlely I remeembr the days when the owner (Nick I think) or someone from the family would bring you something extra to the table and say "hey try this". I would have been OK with the prices if the quality had been better. They have a pasta mania night on Tuesday for $9.95, a very good price. I need to try that with some meatballs and red gravy. Also a steak night on Wednesday night. Thursday is a prix fix for $25 / 3 courses.

If there is one thing Pennsylvanians don't know, it's how to cook seafood correctly. Seafood eateries in the midstate slaughter the prep and the finish of most seafood dishes. Scallop entree at Rillos? Cooked PERFECTLY. For the price I would expect nothing less, and yet I was still impressed. Entrees were very unique. I've never had a marsala dish topped with provolone cheese, and it was very good. Why not four stars? Price was high side Central Pa (would be lowish for NYC). The decor was nice, but the "mood music" cd on repeat on volume level 8 (of 11) was a bit loud, and the carpets were a tad worn and could use a good cleaning to get rid of the faint but noticeable 'dankness.' Staff? Holy crap. When did fine dining establishments start hiring people under 20? Dammit, why does my hip hurt... why can't I hear the music anymore? Why is it so dark in here? ...where are my teeth...?

This place has really went down hill in last couple of years. If you happen to have a problem and ask to speak to a manager; a server will lie to you and tell you to hold on and another server will come talk to you. This was the most unprofessional response I have ever encountered in my life. When I asked why she sent a another server up to my table she replied, " we don't have a manager." The owner just lets the servers run the restaurant. The food quality is sub-par and this was once one of my favorite places to dine in Carlisle.

Decent but wholly unremarkable family Italian. Pricey for what it is and an 80s decor that's nearly wince-worthy. Chicken parm, salad, spaghetti and cocktails all ok but nothing to run for.

I have been to this restaurant a few times hoping for some improvement. Generic and unimaginative Italian food in a dated atmosphere with unenthusiastic staff. Just nothing special here but one of a handful of restaurants in this nice town. Plenty of parking. keep your expectations low and you wont be disappointed. I don't understand why Carlisle doesn't have better quality restaurants.

I've been here several times in the past. I've had some ok meals and some pretty good ones. The wait staff is usually very polite and helpful, sometimes they are too busy and they don't have enough people and you wait a very long time. We eat here once in a while. It is ok, but it just never seems like it's quite worth the money you spend. If you're looking for that magical evening and wanna spend some $$ to impress someone, not sure this would be the best place to go.

Went here a few weeks ago, very good appetizers, such as the prosciutto on crusted bread. I liked it, felt more elegant and fancy inside.

Food is great. Staff is very friendly. A nice relaxing atmosphere. We came on two occasions- beware of car show weekends, the wait will be long. Any other time both the wait staff and the bar service were excellent. Food is classic and not overdone or kitschy American-Italian. We came for happy hour and stayed for dinner. I can't wait to go back.

Filet mignon was great, duck special was great, and our waiter was great. A young guy that acted very mature and made an excellent evening for my birthday dinner! The blue cheese dressing on my salad was amazing too! Romantic atmosphere that's perfect for special occasions. The wood paneling is a little out dated, and my roasted red potato side wasn't amazing, but overall it was an awesome night!

This is probably the best restaurant I can think of. Notice how I didn't "Italian" restaurant, because this includes all restaurants. The food is so good, always has good presentation, and is prepared with the finest ingredients. I know this, because I worked there for 5 years, and despite having some bad experiences with the staff, it's my highest recommendation to friends or those looking for a fine dining experience. They're always blown away by how delicious the food is. It's way more than just pasta, in fact some of their best entrees, like the Veal Misto and NY Strip for instance, aren't pasta or necessarily even Italian dishes either. Try the crab al forno appetizer, lobster bisque, or any of their salads. All their entrees are delicious, it just depends on what sounds good to you. Yes, it is a little pricy, but you get what you pay for, and this is a high end restaurant where these prices are to be expected. In closing, I highly recommend this restaurant, for any occasion, date, or just to treat yourself to a night out to eat. You will be glad you went there.

I came here for my boyfriend's mother's birthday celebration. When we first drove down the dark, creepy road to get to the restaurant, I thought my Harrisburg born and bred boyfriend was going to send me to my final resting place. Instead, we drove into a parking lot with what looked like a semi truck limo parked to the side. That was when I realized I was very far away from DC. The restaurant's decor is cozy, inviting and great for big groups. There is also a bar with a tv where many people were sitting, drinking, and enjoying the game. We were seated quickly in the backroom. The service was fast and friendly and the food was enjoyed by all. The fried mozzarella was really good and everyone enjoyed the fried ravioli. Personally, I am not a big fan of Italian food. I ordered the Smoked Salmon and Smoked Pepper Trout. It was a big plate full of pieces of toast, some kind of whipped cream cheese salmon mixture which was pretty flavorless, generous portions of smoked salmon and smoked trout, along with red onions and capers to make little open faced sandwiches with. I was told the creme brulee was delicious as well. Though I probably wouldn't willingly come back here because I don't like Italian, this restaurant is great if you do.

Food was very good. I had Linguini a la Nick and it was delish. Good service, waiter was very good. My fiance has been going to this place since he was a little kid. He says the food is consistently good.

Best Italian in the area for sure!!!! If you like cream sauce try the Chicken or Pasta Veneziana. It is delicious! Love all of their red sauce dishes too! Seafood Bisque is really good and just love their house salad and garlic bread! YUM!!!

I think this is a pretty good restaurant overall. The girls greeting at the door weren't the most polite, but we got seated quickly so it didn't matter. Our waitress was fantastic, and our dishes were cleared from our table quickly when we were finished and our drinks were refilled constantly. I haven't tried a lot of the dishes here, but I can say their spaghetti dishes are good, and the desserts look amazing! I had the home made linguini and it's fantastic. Their traditional sauce is usually pretty good but a bit runny. I haven't had any other dishes but everything that came to the other tables looked and smelled delicious. The ambiance is ok. There is a small bar in the area, but I personally have never found it to be a loud restaurant as it says in the description. Low lighting and comfortable tables. If you are in the area, give it a try!

I was at Rillo's for a large group party, and I had a great time. There were a few waiters/waitresses working the room, and they were very attentive. The food was delicious and came out hot. I have been here before for dinner here and there, and I have never been disappointed. The food may be pricey, but it's very good and I can never finish the meal, the portions are so large. I will definitely come again!

We visited this restaurant for Mother's Day. I have been here twice before, but this experience was the worst. The food has always been mediocre(I do not believe it is homemade), but on this occasion one of our party was served cold haddock with very hot vegetables. My own pasta was warm, but I was never offered parmesan to go with my plain spaghetti with Marinara. The service was incredible slow from our server and we rarely saw her, but there were about 10 busboys that constantly visited the table. Will not return.

Not bad...I am guessing the gnocchi was not homemade. Don't go alone, servers are uninterested in a single diners tip. Otherwise not bad.

Will not return. While there are a handful of edible entrées and some good desserts, overall it is not worth the money. Margarita pizza was the worst I ever had. The tomatoes were pureed, barely had any color and tasted like water. They are definitely cutting corners with frozen not fresh ingredients. Our waitress was fantastic but bartenders were awful. When I was finally served at the bar, they actually questioned why I wanted to keep my tab open (um...because I want to drink more and maybe eat at the bar rather than wait? But never mind). We usually eat at Anelie's in Boiling Springs but we wanted wine with dinner. It is a bit of a dump and no wine but it is at least homemade and good. Will keep going there until we find an alternative to Rillo's.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
