Very warm welcome upon entry and seated right away. We placed our order and food was delivered in a timely fashion. My daughter and I enjoyed a nice brunch. Smoked salmon bagel, soup and muffin. Her breakfast bagel and salmon quite a large portion. I just have to say I'm not so sure about the service. Our particular waitress was not very friendly, lefts out cups empty (I eventually asked the nice bus girl for refills), and somehow every one of the servers black uniforms were dusted with crumbs and hand wipe marks. It was just too much. It makes you wonder what else they let go (hand washing, kitchen cleanliness etc).

Checked Yelp for a breakfast place and went with Em J's. I don't suggest the pork roll unless you like it spicy. My companion had the Napolean omelet and loved it. Why for stars? Everything, including service, was great. Especially bc there was plenty of good hot coffee. Never had to ask.

Formerly known as Patty Mac's, this little eatery is under new management and now serves dinner, on top of breakfast and lunch. I've only been once since the change in ownership, but the menu at Em J's is certainly more adventurous than PattyMac's, yet all the favorites from Patty Mac's are also available. With items like ginger-bread waffles, crab and brie omelets, and lots of daily breakfast, lunch and dinner specials, Em J's offers a nice selection of entrees for any time of day. Generally the food is good, but I might suggest that the cook be a bit more detail oriented. The crab and brie in my omelet was ice cold. I'd have sent it back, but I was in a large group and didn't want to be the last one eating after everyone else devoured their breakfasts. Also we had to wait 20 minutes while they brewed coffee. I guess it's better than getting served coffee that had been warming for 2 hours. I'm definitely going to give Em J's another try and hopefully they'll be on point when I do. The ideas are certainly there, but a bit better execution would put them into a four star category.

Cute little cafe near the Chesterbrook area. I ate here for breakfast with a business partner. They offered a wide range of options to accommodate even the pickiest, health-conscious diner. The diner offered both table/booth and counter seating. It met that sweet spot of being quiet enough to have a conversation, yet private enough to talk business without feeling like everyone can hear you. One unique offering is real maple syrup, which they do not leave on the table (must request it). Service staff was quick and friendly.

Came specifically for breakfast after reading yelp reviews. The place was jam packed, which is a great sign. We didn't wait too long but decided to sit at the counter. Service was fairly quick. I had one egg, scrapple and a pancake and a toasted bagel. The egg was done a little more than I like, the scrapple was good, hot but a bit greasy, the pancake was very good and i asked for the maple syrup which they keep refrigerated. All in all a better than average breakfast. My partner had his eggs benedict. Eggs were cooked well, the hollandaise sauce was good, the potatoes were good, although slightly reheated tasting. Again, all in all, very good. This cafe has tons of choices. If we were drinking, we would most definitely try it again in the evening when you could byob. I recommend visiting this tiny, out of the way little cafe when in the area.

The food was great. Everything was fresh. It's a cozy restaurant & staff was very friendly. The menu had a lot of variety & fun items. I'm picky when it comes to food & customized my breakfast & they got everything right- which never happens. They actually care about their customers. I will definitely go back there next time I'm in Pennsylvania.

We were actually looking for Black Cat Cafe, but the Yelp directions were wrong so we ended up here. The food was good, and the staff very friendly. The reason it gets 3 stars instead of 4 is b/c breakfast for two should never cost $28, an that's b/f tip. I just can't justify that expense for breakfast. Maybe we'll give it another shot for lunch or dinner.

Cafe is really cute - but the overall experience was meh. The hostess (who I think was one of the owners) was super friendly, informative and helpful. Server was the opposite. The hostess promised the server would share specials when she came, the girl didn't even know what they were. She (the server) came over, said hello and what would you like order? I asked about the specials, she gave me a blank look. Brought our food out, didn't come back again until I flagged her down for more coffee and condiments, and when she brought those out she left the check. The food was okay, not great. And I know this is nit-picky, but I was a server for a long time and I always hated cleaning out the ketchup and hot sauce tops. But MAN was it nasty today when every sauce I picked up had a huge buildup of crust. Was hoping for better.

It was my second time to this cozy brunch place. The waitresses are friendly and service is prompt. Last time I had their Eggs Benedict, and this time was 2 pancakes, 2 eggs and 2 sausages. My friend got the Italian Omelet. All were above average. A few tips, parking is a little tight, you seat yourself when you go in, don't forget to check the specials written on the chalkboard, and you bring the check to the counter.

Nice and clean. Ordered my eggs over medium it was not quite medium. Food was warm but not very hot. Food was okay but nothing special.

So want to like this place and support it, but the last time I was there, water poured out of a bottle of ketchup. When we told the waitress, she just put it back with the other bottles. Never again.

Went to Em J's with some colleagues recently and we really enjoyed it. The owners are super nice and the food was wonderful... I had the most delicious veggie quesadillas - my mouth is watering just thinking about them. It's a little far from where I work. If it were closer, I'm pretty sure I would become a regular!

    (5)
  • Lani M.

If you're not from around here, or a "regular" to this cafe, don't bother with this establishment. It's obvious that the regular diners to this cafe get preferential treatment. Upon entering nobody greeted us or seated us to a table, so instead we just seated ourselves. I observed other people who were probably regulars that walked in and were seated immediately and warmly greeted. The prices are absurd for just a regular omelette, and while it tasted okay, it didn't justify the cold atmosphere and being treated like second class citizens just because we weren't "regulars". Come on now, this is just a small place to eat brunch, certainly not on Rodeo Drive. Next time we visit the area I'll be sure to avoid this place.

Great first experience. The flat iron was perfectly cooked as was the salmon. Seems desserts are made onsite. Loved the rice pudding. :-). We will be trying this out for breakfast soon.

Excellent service! The food was outstanding and FRESH! Wonderful gluten free choices from pancakes to waffles to bread. We met the owner John who was a real pleasure I will definitely be back!

My fiance and I live in West Chester, which has awesome brunch spots, but we were meeting up with some friends so this was a good middle ground. This cafe had good reviews, so we figured to give it a shot. We were seated right away and the menu had a ton of options to choose from. The food was mediocre breakfast food and affordable, but nothing out of this world. We probably would have considered to go back if it weren't for the service. Immediately after our food was brought to our table, the check was placed down, never asking us if we were going to want anything additional. We sat down at 11:00am, the food came out pretty quickly, but by 12:00pm we were getting kicked out of our seats by the owner. There were about four open tables for the older women that wanted to sit down, but for some reason it had to be our table. I could understand if we were holding up the table for hours while there was a line, but there were several open tables and only 5 people (not groups) waiting to be seated. We were meeting up with friends we had not seen in a while and it was unfortunate to be rushed out after only an hour. Needless to say, we will not be back!

We stopped in here for breakfast on a Saturday morning. It was busy, but not packed, and we were seated immediately. The service was attentive and friendly, and the food was very good. I had eggs benedict, and the hollandaise sauce was really tasty. My wife tried the special of the day, which was a pumpkin omelet, and she enjoyed it. My only complaint is that the food was a tad expensive and the portions a little small, but delicious nonetheless. We will definitely stop in again when we're in the area.

I like this place. I went to Patty Mac's a few times before ownership of the place changed hands, and definitely like this food a little better- it's little more original and upscale. They have a few interesting options- for instance, the Napoleon omelette, which features brie and berries and was really good. I don't feel like I'm doing my health a disservice by eating here like I would with a lot of other breakfast places whose only interesting options are super carb-heavy. The waitstaff seemed pleasant and the service was reasonably fast; my dad apparently comes here with his friends every week and has inside jokes with the waitstaff, which shows that they're nice people with a sense of humor. The food wasn't too expensive (although it could be a few dollars cheaper). I would definitely come back when I'm in the area. For me, its competition is Nudy's, which has locations in Wayne and Paoli and has different items on the menu, but a similar feel. However, this place is definitely solid and I would like to come back and try something new in the future.

Overpriced diner food. The food was just ok and the service was pretty bad for us, but the locals seemed to get better service. Will not return.

Excellent food - fresh and tasty breakfast! Good service too. Found on yelp on our way to a soccer tournament in the area, went back again the next morning too!!

Best breakfast place around. Service is great and the food is better. However, prices are a bit high. For me, my wife and 3-year old daughter breakfast can run $40-50 when all is said an done. You get what you pay for though. Great seasonal specials as well.

Quick service, delicious food and hot coffee. Can't ask for too much more than that on a Sunday morning. I got the sweet potato hash special with poached eggs, bacon and spicy hollandaise sauce. The sweet potato was soooo good. I would love to know how they prepared it. If I could change one thing I would make the sauce a little spicier but all the flavors were great overall and it was a perfectly filling portion. My friend got the hangover breakfast sandwich which was bacon, eggs, potato and caramelized onion on a long white toasted roll. He said it was really good and it was an awesome size for the price. Coffee was good too! The servers were very polite and you can pay up front so that was convenient. Small, quiet and quaint atmosphere.

Em J's Cafe is fantastic. The wait staff is attentive and knowledgeable, the owners are friendly- and often working there which is nice to see and recognize them after 7 trips! Any meats you eat there- the homemade corn beef hash (NOM), bacon, homemade cured lunch meats, etc- phenomenal. You can tell all their food is fresh and well made. Besides my one burger (plain and not cooked well), every other meal I have enjoyed. BYOB dinners All gluten free options: waffles, pancakes, french toast, bread (both plain and cinnamon raisin) along with hash browns You cannot tell their gluten free options from the gluten-filled.

Their slogan Good food, Done Right. Is an understatement! Fast and friendly servers who seem genuinely interested in their guests needs, unlike some local joints. I recently enjoyed a delicious breakfast of poached eggs and Canadian bacon. The toast was not too buttery and the breakfast potatoes were nice and crispy. The perfect Saturday breakfast! The only reason I give this place 4 stars is it's real estate. The strip mall environment just lacks character that an old diner or small cafe has. Their signage is a bit hard to read - although real effort has been made to warm up the interior. I have been bypassing it for awhile because of the location, but now I know the food and service is so good I'll make more of an effort! Also not very busy for a Saturday - a pleasant surprise!

The breakfast was great. Came here the last two days and the food was awesome. I had eggs, toast, corned beef. The first day the register was out but the service was made up for the malfunction. The next day great service and breakfast. I plan to return whenever in the area.

The waiters were very friendly and put up with our ridiculous order that was filled with substitutions. The portions were big and the food was utterly delicious. This is a really great place to have breakfast!

Our family comes here regularly for breakfast and lunch. We prefer it to Nudy's because we think the dishes are more inspired and the value is better. There are always new specials and a wide variety too, even GF options and salad specials. One of my favorite lunches is the roasted veggie quesadilla, the tortilla is nicely grilled to a crispy perfection and topped with guacamole and fresh salsa. The only downside is the ventilation. Sometimes the kitchen grill smells are a bit strong but we still keep going cause the food and service never disappoint. If they'd enhance the ventilation I'd give the place five stars for lunch and breakfast.

Great breakfast and service. We went to a spot that was closed and locals recommended this place. They put powdered sugar on the pancakes. It was a perfect find.

This place has been a godsend in my learning about Celiac Disease and gluten free. Before Em J's Cafe, I had come to the conclusion that life with this disorder meant not being able to enjoy great pancakes, waffles, French Toast - you name it. These guys have blown that supposition out of the water. I would go so far as to suggest that the gluten free pancakes are better than the regular ones.

I love this place. Great food, good prices, plenty of seating with enough room. The variety on the menu is great too, with new things cropping up occasionally. Very good!

Dear Emily & John, We want to thank you for helping us to host a wonderful rehearsal dinner where we were able to bring our two families together to help celebrate the start of a wonderful wedding weekend. You and your staffs' attention to detail really led to a great experience, right down to the linens coordinating the colors of the wedding. We loved that you matched the cupcake frostings to include the wedding colors. We were wowed! The food was exceptional (great appetizers, salads and chicken marsala and awesome salmon....not a drop left of anything.) A great time was had by all! Thank you for everything! Fondly, Felice & Gary & Steven & Samantha

We're fortunate to be within walking distance of EmJ's. Most of the things we loved about the former Pattymacs are still there (except we miss the quirky coffee mugs that were contributed by various patrons, and the cool art prints Patty had for sale). There have also been various upgrades to the menu and decor. I have been to EmJ's for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I like the breakfasts best--they have all the standard morning fare but I usually go for one of the interesting specials and enjoyed every experiment. For lunch I like their quesadillas. For dinner the prime rib is excellent (and we appreciated the complimentary glass of malbec to go with it). The new owners, Emily and John, are terrific hosts--very friendly and make everyone feel welcome. EmJ's is a gem as a great little neighborhood eatery. If you live in the area, it's definitely a place you need to check out.

What a Main Line find! My fiancé and I have been coming to MJ's since it was Patty Mac's. We didn't think it could get much better but it has. The breakfast and dinner menus are ultra creative and ever changing. Pumpkin arugula salad, need I say more? Food is superbly prepared and beautifully presented. We're always extremely satisfied no matter what we order. The owners and chef are so friendly and always make a point to come over and chat. The ambiance is unassuming but don't let that fool you. The food is on par with what you can get down the road at Nectar, if not better. And it's a BYO with no corking fees. We're foodies and have been to some of the finest restaurants, and MJ's food is up there with the best.

Our favorite place to eat breakfast! The food is amazing & the service is friendly. The breakfast potatoes are real roasted red potatoes, not the shredded mess or weird orange squares most other places serve. Tons of delicious & unique omelette options plus always 1 or 2 extra choices on the specials board. Same for the pancakes -tons of choices from healthy triple berry to unique specials Apple & Bacon (my son loved it!). I recommend this place to everyone & usually get a follow up call thanking me for doing so. ***they have gluten-free items on their menu.

I got really bad food poisoning at this place. The front looks ok, but the kitchen must be disgusting. I have a strong stomache but I was vomiting just an hour after eating there. Definitely not a fluke. Anyone raving about this place is probably just a friend of theirs trying to get business. This place is basically just a very expensive way to get salmonella poisoning. Do yourself a favor and just eat out of a trash can.

I exited my car to a surprise this morning. I expected to walk into Patty Mac's Cafe, and instead was confronted by Em J's Cafe. I don't live in the area anymore, and only get here a few times per year. Apparently, right around the time of my last breakfast here in March 2011, Patty sold the cafe to the current owners. I let my moment of sadness pass, then went inside for breakfast. The basic layout is unchanged from Patty's, and it is remodeled with earth tone colors, has a nice chalk board for specials, and overall the same homey atmosphere. I had my usual breakfast (see photo) of Belgian waffle, home fries, and bacon. I asked for the home fries well done, and didn't bother to ask for the special whipped cream Patty used to make, though I think I should've tried. The food was excellent, and it came out just a few minutes after I placed my order - FAST. The home fries were well done and not overly salty. The waffle was soft and fluffy, and the bacon - well, it's bacon. Perfect by nature :) Come here for breakfast. It's excellent.
