Bad pizza. Sauce with very little taste, and way too much of it. The crust was thick, but ok. The cheese was far too scarce for the amount of sauce. I am not going back, or I should say, taking out.

Tried it several times since we moved to Ardmore 3 years ago based on several recommendations. We were disappointed every time. The Pizza wasn't very good and other menu items were worse. It is usually packed and still seems to be a favorite with longtime fans. We found better options a few doors away

Marrones Pizza is the absolute best around! When it comes to good, old fashioned, hearty pizza.... look no further than Marrones! What I like most about Marrones Pizza is that it is not greasy! You don't need to soak up the oils like you do for most pizza's nowadays - especially chain pizzas. The way they make their pizza is with a solid tomato sauce - not too many crazy spices to ruin the taste of their delish crust! We always order triple cheese because we like the extra cheese... If you like cheese as well, I recommend! Theres something EXTRA SPECIAL about getting Marrones Pizza fresh out of the oven and eating it in the restaurant.... I never eat pizza with a fork and knife, but when we are eating at Marrones, I always cut it up like I am eating at a 5 star restaurant! Take out is also awesome, however they are always so jam-packed with take out orders, make sure you call with at least an hours notice for when you need your pizza! All-in-all, I HIGHLY recommend giving Marrones a try. It's a neighborhood place! If you don't like it - don't worry about it.... Theres plenty more of us out there that LOVE it! God Bless!

All I can say is - how very much I enjoy this pizza. My family and I have been loyal followers for over 20 years. Granted it is different and some folks don;t like the way its made but i LOVE IT!! The pepperoni is the best!!

Marrone's pizza is something that either you love or you dislike. It is very funny to read the reviews here because those that do not enjoy it, their resposne is typical to skip it. The crust is light and airy and the sauce is a tomato sauce where you get to add the oregano or red pepper. The pepperoni is small and a little spicy. Like another yelper wrote, f you like cheese, order double cheese or triple cheese. Also, I suggest you do not order the large pie but instead order a small pie as it cooks better. As for me, I am a fan. Have been since I was very young. Comments on the wait staff are again hit or miss. To me, the wait staff has always been friendly, polite, and helpful but it is a neighborhood place and if you think they are going to super-serve you and be a bubbly 22 year old then, yes, you will be disappointed because the people who work here for the most part have worked here for quite a long time and in my opinion are very good and comfortable in their job so you are treated more like family. The antipasto is good and their non-pizza dishes are average. You come here for pizza with a solid beer selection in a place that has character which includes the somewhat difficult parking (you might have to walk around the block) but again, it is in a neighborhood and not a large box or in a mall. It is a throwback. Try it and either you will enjoy it and want to come back or you will decide that this throwback eatery deserves to be thrown back. As for me, I eat here every time I am back in Philly and do so as often as I can get away with it.

I ordered take out last night and for the first time I actually picked the food up. The pizza is delicious but it is different. If you are looking for NYC style pizza in the area nothing beats Bella Italia, but Marrone's has great food and a great atmosphere. I never thought to go out to eat there but they have a decent bar, and the crowd was people in there 30's to a family of four, to a couple who looked around 50 yrs in age. Great group of people, great food, highly recommended.

I felt compelled to finally make an account to write what I think about the Main Line's most overrated eating establishment. Marorone's. I had been to the place 5 years ago, because of rave reviews from friends. I was ready to give it another chance this evening, but this time I was getting pasta. The last time I had pizza and ravioli, this time i had spaghetti. First off, its hard for me to give this a 1(total bust) because service was friendly, and the hostess made me feel welcome. Immediately we were told that there was a 1 dollar charge for eating in. Now how ridiculous is that. I've heard of semi bs charges for taking out. Since you're taking out sauces and they prepare it for you, but eating in is ludacris. Second they give u a tiny cup for soda, that doesn't come with free refills. Third-with my spaghetti dinner, i had to ASK for them to bring out bread. This is an italian restaurant. The Meal: 10.50 for some spaghetti and meatballs, and yay it came with a mini soup/salad. The fagioli soup came out first and was pretty bland. The next was my spaghetti and meatballs. It was also pretty bland/substandard. It came with one meatball that had very little taste. Overall i'd expect more from an italian restaurant. The 1 dollar charge for eating in is bs, and the food was mediocre. Wish i had tried the pizza this time though.

Sauce is bland. Crust is terrible. Tastes like reheated cafeteria pizza. Skip it.

It's probably some of the best Pizza I have ever had. The Cheese is pure Mozzarella, the sauce is so thick that it tastes like meat is in it (it isn't), and it's bread/crust is almost like Italian bread. It doesn't really offer to many toppings (maybe pepperoni). but you don't really need anything more for it to satisfy you.

this is my favorite pizza.... ever. i have had them all- picas, gaetanos, Lorenzo's, etc.. double cheese is regular and triple cheese is double cheese, sauce on top is what you'll get if not specified... I'm from ardmore and and have been enjoying Marones since a kid.. taste has never changed and shouldn't. I've never gotten anything else bc honestly i don't want anything else. i recommend the large double cheese with pepporoni & I get a large double cheese on the side too lol.. people hate on marones and i just don't understand why..

Parking is terrible, servers are rude and the decor is out of the 1970's. And we love this place and have been going since before I was born (40+ years!!). As another yelper said, its what makes it Marrone's. The pizza is hot and fresh. Heats up great the next morning. You can't go just once. Great place to go with a large party. Call ahead for dine in and your pizza will be ready. Patty the owner will greet you and make sure you are well taken care of!

The way I see it, if a Martian came down and had a slice of pizza, then went back to Mars and tried to recreate it at home from memory without a recipe, it would turn out like Marrone's. The crust is dry and a little too thick to be called thin and a little too thin to be called thick, the sauce is kind of bland and I think they use provolone cheese. But... ...even though it's not exactly my cup of tea I know people who love Marrone's (including one of my relatives who calls it her "favorite pizza"), and since it's a family-owned restaurant that's been there for years and has a loyal following who am I to criticize? If you get the pizza, definitely get double or triple cheese. Single cheese doesn't cut it. (You'll understand what I mean when you get there.) If you like eating "where the locals go", this is it.

Thick crust tasteless pizza. Servers were delightful but the meal was terrible. The salad was bagged greens that weren't fresh though the croutons were scrumptious.

I agree with many of the reviews I read. After visiting the restaurant for the first time and hearing good things about it, I can honestly say it's nothing to write home about. I grew up with this type of pizza but my mom's was better. The pizza without toppings is not that good. The sauce is bland and if you need to order extra cheese, something is wrong. It's thicker, dough type pizza, my wife can't seem to make it anymore so they have it down but they need to improve the sauce. The menu selection is not that big and based on what I could tell, it's a little over priced. I always wanted to try it but now that I have, I have no real need to go back.

Hands down the worst pizza above the Mason Dixon Line. The staff in this place are VERY friendly down to earth people who make you feel welcome in their well-established neighborhood restaurant (since the 1940s) as you sit down for prompt service while watching the happening sports game and enjoying an ice cold brew from their well-thought selection. A good solid four-star quality experience. But for me, the overriding quality of any establishment is the bottom line quality of the food which gets 0.2 stars, because my personal reason for not using my own kitchen and save $ is to eat food that I can't make at home. This pretty much sums up their "pizza": If you told an intoxicated frat boy at 3 AM to make you a pizza from scratch in his dorm room oven with low quality grocery store ingredients the yield would be remarkably similar to what is Marrone's pizza. The oven temperature is obviously set way too low as can be seen when the crust comes out like foamy blandness, pretty much the complete opposite of artisan brick oven pizza prepared in a brick oven. If you don't order the cheese under the sauce as they recommend, it will come burnt. Their crust reminds me of my first improperly cooked home made pizza which was an epic fail because I didn't know what I was doing. The cheese is actually a low quality mass-produced grocery store provolone, so take it as you will. The sauce they use is definitely a step up from ragu or prego (probably in line with classico), but far below the quality you would expect from a business that does this professionally. If it were not for the well-established neighborhood following and friendly atmosphere, the quality of their food would put them out of business in very short time. During my life, I have lived in New York, Italy and Philadelphia. I can say that this pizza is Americanized, but certainly not in a good way like in Chicago-style or Jersey boardwalk-style pizza. This is by far the worst pizza I have ever had that wasn't previously frozen. If you go here, you can look forward to a friendly atmosphere to chat with the friendly locals and owners, but by all means stay far away from the food. their motto is "just a little different" . By different they must mean focusing solely on the quality neighborhood experience you get there and totally ignoring the quality of the food. Another cool aspect of this place is that you feel like you stepped into a vintage 1970s tap room encased by wooden paneling. I'll be sure to wear my aviators and members only jacket the next time I walk in for JUST a drink to socialize with the friendly folks inside and watch the game. I wouldn't even think of eating their pizza again unless MAYBE I was starving and it was free. I like the owners so much that I would actually be willing to offer them lessons/suggestions on how to make pizza the right way.

I remember that my neighbors used to order the pizza from Marrone's when was just a wee lass. I never really enjoyed the pizza back then and the times sure haven't changed. Marrone's offers a very limited menu with pizza being their biggest seller (but I am not sure why). The pasta dishes are not too bad but I have had better at other Italian restaurants. I find the gravy/sauce to be very bland. The service is okay but I always feel rushed when I go there and the waitresses are not the friendliest. Marrone's used to only accept cash as payment. I am not sure if that has changed but I sure hope so. It looks like this place has a very loyal following so that is what probably keeps them in business. Oh and parking is very difficult to find in that area. My recommendation is to skip it.

They have their own unique take on pizza. Very unlike any other and is a bit of an acquired taste. Still, it's worth a visit, there aren't many family shops around where you and the family can sit down and relax with a pizza and a carafe of chilled chianti.

  • Sasha A.

This pizzeria has an old world feel with a friendly staff to match. I enjoyed the authentic "tomatoey" sauc despite the bland crust. I can appreciate their no nonsense family recipe. Maybe next time I will try their homestyle italian dinners like spaghetti or chicken parm to see if these make a bigger impression.

Marrone's Pizzeria is a veritable institution in suburban Philly. Their Pizza is unique, as they put the sauce on top of provolone cheese. They go light with the cheese. A lot of people order extra cheese, which is probably a good idea for a newcomer there. Extra cheese at Marrone's is still probably less cheese than you're used to. It has a different taste from most pizza, but it's very good. Service is usually good. Sometimes it's a little slow, but always friendly. The restaurant has a homey vibe. It's casual, but not a plastic-booth kind of place. Marrone's isn't a legend for nothing. Don't go in expecting normal pizza, but if you spend time in the neighborhood, it's the kind of place you have to try.

Possibly the worst pizza I've ever had. Ironically one of my best friends says it's her favorite pizza on earth. I guess it is taste specific. The fried Mac and cheese bites were decent however.

I heard so much about this pizzeria from people who grew up in the area that I had to give it a try. All I can say is Marrone's Pizza must be an acquired taste. The tomato sauce -- definitely the high point of the pie -- had a tomato paste feel and sat upon a cheese topped pizza crust that was so bland and tasteless it could have passed for baked play doh. On the plus side, the staff was friendly and attentive and the old-school interior was warm and homey and felt like a movie set.

I love their red sauce and pasta. Their raviolis and meatballs are my son's favorite. My husband loves their pizza.

Absolutely love this place! Grew up with it and so did my grandparents! Definitely order double cheese light on the sauce though!

  • Tara G.

Marrones pizza... The pizza is the worst I have ever had. The dough is tasteless, the mushrooms taste like canned raw mushrooms, the sauce is unseasoned tomato paste... The service is on the bad side... The workers just sit at a table in the front entrance and do nothing. There is only one waitress who semi helps and refills drinks. The rest just sit there. Honestly will not be going back again. Their salads are good though. The have a homemade dressing which is good but the need to offer more dressing options.

Its a family owned pizzeria shop thats been around for years and will always be here. You can't mistake a Marrone's pizza.. its different than the others. They have 3 different ordering methods, and it depend what or how you ask. Single, double, triple are the cheeses' (Provolone is used). Their tomato pie has one layer of cheese and tomato sauce ontop. The dough(pizza shells) are fresh, hand made everyday and placed in the freezer for later use ( I used to work here i when i was in high school.. knowledge bomb) along with their other dishes from veal parms to their meetballs. I have basically eaten everything here and know when to get a pie and when not. They have several people who run the kitchen and everyone has their own touch to it. If i know of a certain "guy" who is making it that day/night I pass. I don't know why, and i can't explain it, but when a certain "lady" is running the show it is different. Sometimes the crust has no taste to it.. kinda dry/bland-ish, and when you mention "light sauce" he would use his judgement compaired to actual. This place is a great family place.. it does get packed friday nights and the atmosphere is home like. They do make good food.. call ahead for pick up though... they do get slammed on weekend nites. The staff people are nice and they do accomodate to you. Another plus is they do package their meals/dishes for you to buy out of their freezer. So if you liked their veil, or lasagna to anything, they offer it to you to also purchase. Good stuff

Our family's favorite pizza. Remember they serve tomato pies. Get double cheese If u like a traditional pizza. We like pepperoni, too

  • Mike S.

Horrid pizza - crust was worse than Chef boyardee, and sauce was unseasoned tomato paste. Cheese may as well have been store bought, certainly wasn't quality. My wife's Lasagna was more like lean cuisine. The Server was nice, and competent, unlike their cook. The ONLY people who would like this place are either the elderly, or smokers, as their taste buds are completely shot. Complete waste of $$ How this got rated at all by Philadelphia Magazine, well, their writer must have grown up on this junk. Won't ever be back. Oh, and parking is a dark small lot.

Let me explain Morrones is the best ...it's a pizza you have to have every so often or you bust and that's it a treat for your taste buds and what ever else is wrong.... Been coming here 30 yrs

[[[Shudder!]]] I moved to Ardmore from Philadelphia and, like others, had heard so much about the great Marrone's. To be fair, I gave it a couple of chances, but OMG people! This is like REALLY BAD homemade pizza made by a REALLY BAD cook using the old Chef Boyardee pizza boxed mix. Seriously! Canned mushrooms, CANNED tomato paste sauce with no seasoning. I did try their pasta dishes too and was similarly unimpressed. Bland bland bland. I gotta wonder about the taste of peeps who cite it as 'their favorite pizza.' Compared to what? Dominoes?

Bad Pizza. This is a nice, family place. The decor is outdated, but a little homey. The staff is not extraordinary, but friendly and knowledgeable enough. Good beer selection too. But God, the pizza is not good. The crust is incredibly bland. It reminds me of stuff you used to get at birthday parties at roller rinks when you were 8. It's been around forever and has obviously built a following. I had high hopes after hearing great things, but it was very disappointing. Unfortunately, my first visit was also my last.

Can't believe I haven't Yelped Marrone's (muh-rons) before this. As a kid, I used to go to Marrone's several times a month; with the family, with my friends. Going back now with my family 40 years later, I still see the same darn folks. Talk about loyalty! So this pizza is different. It is a polarizing force. You really like it or you really don't, not much in between. Yes, the crust is dry and the cheese hides under the sauce. parking is pretty horrible. Wood paneling and decor right out of 1975. That is what makes it Marrones. Not too many decisions to make. No floppy crust and toppings sliding off onto your plate. Try a large regular pepp and sausage - delish. No need to change out of your sweats and t-shirt. That is what makes it Marrones. Come as you are, eat some pizza, relax, go home when you are ready. I've been in with parties of 10+ twice this month, and barely spent $150 each visit, including gratuity. Very, very kid friendly and family oriented. Great value. Super nice neighborhood feel where people remember you and make a fuss when you walk in. You can call for a table and pre-order your pie - really great when you have kids in your group! They do serve other things - pasta, hot roast pork, chicken parm - but I have never ordered any of that in 40 years.

Literally the worst service I have experienced on the main line. The waitress ignored us after we ordered. We had to go to the bar to get our next round of drinks.

I have no idea how anyone could eat this pizza. Definitely the worst pizza myself, my husband, my daughter, and my grandmother have ever eaten. I didn't even finish a slice before throwing the entire pie away. To the point that I felt robbed. The dough is dry and chewy. The cheese is bitter and nasty, tastes like its gone bad. Sauce tastes like generic canned, but worse. I am sure this will be the worst pizza experience of my life. They should be ashamed of themselves. Honestly. Avoid at ALL costs.

  • S S.

You either love it or hate it. I LOVE it. "It" being their pizza. I've never actually tried anything else in the almost 30 years I've been ordering from Marrone's. The people on here who don't like it have described it accurately (in terms of the cheese going beneath the sauce, etc), but there is SOMETHING about it that I happen to love. And I know I'm not alone.. this place has been in business foreverrrr and only just started accepting credit cards very recently! Oh, and no delivery. So obviously they're doing something right to remain in business (and busy) for so long. Again, it's love or hate. For me, it's true love. Gotta try it to know!

    (5)
  • Stephanie F.

I could make better pizza than the stuff they have here. I want to say I liked their food since it's a family-owned business. I know that the people who come here are loyal to this place and have been coming here forever. I want to prefer this to a chain.. .. but the pizza is just so bland... Both the sauce and the crust. If you end up here, I would say get loads of toppings to add some flavor.

There are great restaurants, good ones, average ones, bad ones, and at the very bottom of that list is Marrone's Pizzeria. Their tag line on the sign outside is "Just a Little Different" and its true. No other establishment in the entire world could suck this bad and still be open. It's obvious that this place makes their money on the bar, and serving poor seniors $11.75 utterly flavorless, truly worst in class, borderline disgusting plates of pizza. What's wrong here? Everything. Decor is from the 1970s, your classic wood paneled walls, smoke infused carpets, and a few bowls on the wall. Specials likely never change and are written on ripped pieces of yester-years mail and sloppily tacked to a bulletin board. Service is uninspired. But really its the food. Holy hotdogs I am blown away! Being a pizzeria, my family ordered two large pies regular (not extra cheese) which means when they come out after 30 minutes (the waitress says all pizzas take at least 25 minutes) you will be greeted by a plate of steaming "sauce" ie canned crushed tomato without a hint of added seasoning. It's very close to a tomato paste. What a stupid gimmick to put the cheese under the sauce, but they do it to hide the almost undetectable layer of some kind of cheese (undetectable as well) Anyhow, if there was a recipe for this pizza it would be this: 1. take completely unseasoned dough (matzoh has more flavor) and place in a 1" pan. 2. lightly sprinkle on "mystery cheese" 3. open can of sauce. Slop on. 4. place in fifty year old oven at 350 degrees (no chance they use pizza ovens) 5. relax while pizza turns to cardboard. 6. attempt to trade for customer cash. Anyone who thinks this pizza is good is out of their minds. As a matter of fact, it is the worst pizza i have ever eaten bar none. I will never be back. My friend thinks they must drug their food to get return customers "addicted" to it b/c no one would ever come again. I felt so bad for the table behind me who ordered the same thing as we were finishing up. It was obviously it was their first time and definitely will be their last unless they are as out of their minds as anyone giving this place a good review. It's impossible to think any sane person would return for this army food. Seriously, this place is a total joke, except it's not funny, and no one's laughing. Unless you are drunk or have entirely lost your sense of taste, left your glasses at home, and have a stuffed nose, it actually makes one mad. Yes, mad enough to write a 1 star review as so many other folks have done. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. It's like burning money, quite literally, which is illegal. Yes, truly, it should be illegal to go here.

  • Bob R.

I love this place. My wife has been going here for over 40 years (Damn!) I have been going here since we met 28 years ago. Yes, it is different from most of the pizza you may get but it is great and they would not be here all of this time and have such a following if it were not! People are real nice and it is always a great experience.

This is one of the two best pizzas I have ever had- the other one being in Ocean City, NJ, by the name of Mack and Manco's. Marrone's pizza is like no other with a crisp, light crust - not chewy like you typical NJ/PA/NY pizzas. Also, they come with less cheese than typical pizza- so they offer double and triple cheese, but triple is more like traditional pizza. Go with the single cheese and add your own parmessan cheese and I promise you it is like heaven. The place itself is a bit of a dive and parking can be difficult, but they allow for takeout.

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
