This is where I like to go when I'm craving an enormous plate of Chinese food, none of which is good for me, but easy on the wallet. I'm a big fan of the hot and sour soup. Service is efficient, and my family and I have been coming here for years.

5 Stars 4 a SW Portland Chinese joint? Yep! Consistent taste, great service, and an inexpensive price for the quantity of food you are served. It's a 5'er. I love Hot and Sour Soup. Yen's has one of the best in town. I get the Twice Cooked Pork and the Subgum Chicken when I want to prepare my abs for the holiday's, The staff is sharp and very accommodating.Nothing fancy. No attitude. Comfort yes. xie xie

My family and I have been frequenting Yen's for years (in fact, it is my one "can't miss" place when I'm visiting them back in Oregon. We usually get family dinner A, which comes with BBQ pork, crab rangoon, egg rolls, fried rice, special chow mein (though we substitute chicken subgum, which is never a problem, fried shrimp and sweet and sour chicken. All of the food is really tasty, but what I find most amazing, compared to many other chinese restaurants, is that the friend chicken pieces in the sweet and sour chicken are all premium white chicken breast meat, rather than who knows what. :) I'd highly recommend them!

I've been going to Yen's since I was 8-years-old. This place is great! I love the food and atmosphere. The lunch specials are amazing and very reasonable. Great for groups and kid friendly. What can I say more...I heart Yen's

Freshest and the best tasting HERE AND ONLY HERE 5/5 STARS (:

MSG added to the food is a good sign of food not served fresh. We were 4 people going to lunch and everyone ordered different and no one was happy. The price of the food was low, but not worth stopping bye.

Probably the best in McMinnville. Ample portions, good service and fair price. Favorite dish is Spicy chicken and Pork Fried Rice

Great food and it comes out super fast.

Oh Yens. What has happened to you?. We have been going here for YEARS!! Last few years we noticed that the ONLY two ingredients in the pork fried rice was the pork and the rice. ?? NO egg, onion, nothing..ok, I can like with that..Then the last few times we have been there, the service was slow and all of the food was really really bad. YENS!! fire your chef and redeem yourselves. A Tigard landmark that we use to love and now are very sad that it has been going down hill.

I have been coming to Yans for over 15 years and it is by far my favorite Chinese restaurant. Pork fried rice is great and the dinner specials are cheap with HUGE portions. I always end up with leftovers when I visit, or we get it to go with a side of hot and sour soup. Excellent for a weeknight when you don't feel like cooking!

  • Bryan B.

we come in here about twice a month. The dinner specials for 8.95 are a great deal and the portion sizes are great! The crab cheese puffs are really cheesy and not over crabby. Highly rwccomend

Okay, I have loved this place through a lot of different managers. Fantastic spring rolls, sesame/ sweet and sour chicken, pork fried rice, bbq pork, lemon chicken and egg flower soup. Those are my favorite things there. The prices are decent. They do NOT deliver to the home, and sometimes they do mess up the order, you have to be very clear what you are asking for and double check. They are pretty fast though for take out and when you eat in the restaurant.

Love this place! My girlfriend introduced me to this place. Good Chinese American good. Driving there takes a little longer than I like but it's all worth it. We can have lunch for two people and have leftovers and only spend $11! It's great.

Yans or now Yens, has great food! I've been coming here since I was just a little kid. As I've aged so has my palate, and now I enjoy dining at some of portlands best restaurants. But let me tell you nothing beats this Chinese comfort cuisine.

I love this place, but I have to be very careful. I can't go in here and not really overeat. The Lo Mein is my favorite out in Tigard. Very yummy and old school Tigard. Clean and fast. Always delicious!!!!!!

Have passed this place many times, decided to finally try it. Typical Chinese decor, on the smaller side. Good service. Sweet and sour chicken was fresh and very good! Kung Pao beef was alright, good flavor but heavy on the veggies. Pork fried rice was disappointing, more like brown rice than pork fried. Helpings were big and prices were low. I think we found our new favorite take-out joint. Would definetly recommend.

This is some of the freshest best tasting Chinese food I have ever had. The address says Portland buts it's really in the heart of Tigard on Main Street. It been in the same spot since I was a kid. Lunch specials for 4-6 bucks and it's way more food than I can eat. The BBQ pork is out of bounds! If you get it to go, ask for the homemade Chinese mustard. Hold on to your hat !!!

Cantonese. Good wholesome and plentiful. And really crowded on Sunday. The portions are too big. The services is fast; hot tea and water fly onto the table when you arrive and the food is too hot to eat when it first gets to the table. The food isn't fancy, but good, consistent and reliable. The decor is from the fifties, but this is the chinese comfort food of my youth. Not mandarin or Sichuan, no chilies and hot pots, no dim sum but good egg foo young, barbecued pork, lemon chicken and fried rice.

I review restaurants based on best of their class, and if you are looking for down home country cooking, that is Chinese, check Yen's out, and you may discover why it's so crowded. The down home country cooking is amply healthy with all the vegetables, paired with a wide variety of meat, seafood and eggs. The sauces give their ample sized dishes that wonderful creature comfort experience. Why go for Pho, when you can make a meal of Yen's War Won Ton or Happy Family.

    1) didn't realize I ordered Half of my pan noodles to be covered in sweet and sour sauce, chicken was mushy. I didn't want veggies and they ended up giving me 3/4 veggies and 1/4 noodles. My mother ordered lemon chicken, that wasn't cooked all the way either. This was the worst. Sorry but this place is no longer an option for me.

  • Jeff S.

Walking in here I thought it would be a definite mistake as any Chinese restaurant that serves burgers and fries make me slightly worried. But the Chinese food wasn't terrible. The staff, albeit curt, got our order out quickly. Way better than a lot of other LO chinese restaurants.

  • Carmen O.

Big plates, but similar to Panda Express in taste and prices. In a pinch, is an okay choice! But Safeway's Chinese may be tastier. If you are trying to impress an Asian friend, don't take them there.

Since my regular Chinese restaurant closed in Beaverton, I was on the hunt for a new go to Chinese place. Yen's was the one. I usually have the dinner combo number 4 and crab puffs. Their food is delicious and is definitely a good replacement for my normal Chinese place.

Shit! I thought I had reviewed this place as I've been going here since the early 90s. Apparently, in my post 90s haze, I neglected to review a good old Chinese/American joint that satisfies my craving for seriously meaty hunks of BBQ Pork Ends! Their Egg foo Yung isn't bad either - nice size patties deeply browned with the right amount of stuff inside. Reminds me of being a little kid and my idea of authentic Chinese food - BBQ Pork and Sweet & Sour Spareribs (those tiny little ribs??). Now, I know better than to think this is representative of food actually cooked in China, but I still sometimes yearn for the Americanized Chinese food I grew up on. In the 90s my sadistic boss loved to take employees to lunch here then insist you clear your plate. What the...? He had some issues and so did I! I would get scared to eat here with him 'cause finishing even a lunch plate here is a big order. Please, you city folk, don't come out here to Tigard & eat here and expect any high falutin' genuine Chinese place - remember, this is the burbs and the place hasn't been remodeled (or modeled at all?) in decades (though, why?). It's clean and fast (unless you catch a huge rush) and reasonably priced. (Hint: If it sounds bland on the menu, don't be surprised it's bland when you get it). Besides, gotta satisfy my craving for BBQ Pork once in a while.

Revisit is what history tells us to do. I spent many years coming to this place when Ivy ran it and it was Yan's. Now Yen's is not my place anymore. Sad when history can't repeat its self. The Hot and Sour soup is still the same recipe and it's great I hate turning into an old bean curd, but it's worse when a good restaurant goes to ordinary.

The portion sizes was good for the price. The price of the food was good. The taste of the food was alright nothing special. They are professionally dressed for a restaurant.

I have been eating at this restaurant when it was named Jade terrace.(in the 80s I had always loved the food, good quality, service. But this last time was different, We had egg rolls as appetizers, twice I had to discreetly spit out unchewable garbage.the first a big VEIN! second bite was something hard. The quality of the food has definitely gone down hill. I agree that it was way better when Ivy owned it. Also, my favorite waitress does not work there anymore. I heard that she has her own restaurant I would like to know wear. I give two stars. we seated ourselves, and the service was promt.

  • Jamie C.

Decent food, reasonable prices and gigantic portions. They are also located on the main strip in downtown tigard. Highly recommended.

    (4)
  • Ashlee M.

My only complaint: the wait staff are rude, couldn't be bothered with simple questions, and often try to leave the table before you finish ordering. Heaven forbid them for asking you if you need anything or if your food is good. Food: is awesome. If I didn't love it so much I wouldn't put up with the snotty waitress. I love the sweet and sour chicken. The egg flour soup is perfection. And Kung pow chicken has just the right amount of kick.

  • Anne L.

Really wonderful, fresh and consistently tasty Chinese food! We have been steady customers since we moved to Tigard in the late 80s. Yen's is a restaurant we can count on always for delicious food. The portions are generous and tasty. The ingredients are always fresh. Prices have gone up since our first visit back in the 80s but we don't mind....it's THAT good. We always order family style dinners A and C, plus extra side orders of Mongolian Beef and Sweet and Sour Chicken. The egg flower soup is "to die for!" Go for it...you will LOVE this place and become a regular like us!

  • Alex H.

For the love of god do not eat here! The food is disgusting. And it don't think it's because I've had amazing Chinese food readily available in the Bay Area. But passing through here on our way to Seattle we had stop because we were starving. Even ravenous we didn't get much down, hands down the worst meal I've had in my life.

  • Felicia B.

I placed an order over the phone and went to pick it up - they had misunderstood what I said on the phone and gave me the entire wrong order - which was considerably more expensive than what I had ordered. Had to wait for them to prepare the correct order - and they didn't even throw in anything extra for the hassle. The food was mediocre - not really worth going back.

    (2)
  • Raja S.

Huge quantities (for $6 lunch menu), but food not so good. I tried sizzling chicken... it was decent, but lacked much taste. The Kung Pao chicken was not great. And the chicken fried rice (ordered spicy) was just bland. Service not good.

  • Deborah H.

We love Yen's. It's our favorite Chinese food. The service is good, the food is great and you get lots of it!

    (5)
  • Rico R.

No hostess, we had an 8 people line for pick up and no hostess to look fit or orders. We had to keep waiving different waitresses to help us, they just ignored us. Food was less than good. Don't waste your time here.

    (2)
  • Conrad T.

Everything here is under alright and above nasty. Over sauced but the best things about this place is the price and quality of meat. The wait is okay, but the language barrier makes it hard to order sometimes.

I have eaten here a few times and each time worse than the last. The only thing my family enjoyed here was the rice....

This is convenient take out food if you're on Main Street. That said, it's not very good. My lunch partner summed it up well with this review, "Well, it's not the best Chinese food out there, but it is edible." :)

I went to visit Yen's today due to the overwhelming number of good reviews. I won't be back, and this is why: 1) The dining room was freezing cold. We told them about it, and they turned up the thermostat, but not enough to actually make it warm. So, we froze. My wife even walked over there and turned it up herself, and they turned it back down after noticing it. 2) The food was mediocre and not healthy at all. As far as the health factor is concerned, think no effort towards health made at all here. I ordered the Coconut Chicken with pork fried rice. The coconut chicken was good, but the chicken was dipped in batter and fried, and the coconut sauce was more like a dessert, super sugary. The Pork Fried Rice was below average, and in order to consume it I had to dowse it in soy sauce. My wife ordered Kung Pao chicken and Chicken Chow Mein. The Chicken Chow Mein was so bad that she only took one bite, and didn't bother to finish the Kung Pao Chicken. 3) The service was awful. We waited forever for anyone to do anything all night. When the food finally did come, they brought food to one person and waited another ten to fifteen while that person ate before bringing us the rest. They didn't bother to refill our beverages. The place was packed, and given our experience there, I have no idea as to why.

The restaurant has been around forever in Tigard but this Yens is terrible. It must have changed hands ? The food was worse than a food court steam table. We ordered takeout and 1/3 of our order was missing when we got home. Called and the restaurant offered to "add it to our order next time".. Really? No next time. If you want a good meal in or an accurate take out order don't go here - regardless of the price.

  • Chris G.

Heard good things about this place and was excited to finally go. That being said it wasn't very good. The General Tso that I had ordered was very sweet and was more batter than chicken it actually tasted like sweet fried donut holes it also arrived about 10min after the other dishes. The cashew chicken had hardly any noodles when we ordered it with noodles and the flavor was lacking, just like the sauce was poured on the chicken. The chicken fried rice was extremely dry and lacked much flavor. Four of us went and none really care to go back.

We've moved to this side of town, so we've been trying to find local places to eat and I have to say I think this is going to be our Chinese place. We use to go to Chinese Happiness in Gresham. My boyfriend is allergic to carrots and peas, so he would always ask for no vegetables. For some reason, even though we went there a lot, Chinese Happiness had a problem getting that right ALL THE TIME. We've gotten take out from here 3 times now and my boyfriend has not had any problems. I've only gotten BBQ Pork with no sesame seeds and I love it! There pork is juicy, not dry, and has little fat on it. We will continue you here a lot. Only 4 stars because yesterday we got my boyfriend Chicken Lo Mein and he wasn't happy with how soaked the stuff was with sauce. He'll probably stick to fried rice in the future.

I can't believe this place is still here. My dad used to take our family here 40 years ago. I looks exactly like I remembered and the food is still amazing. Hot and fresh from the egg flower soup to the veggies in the stir fry. I will be taking my family here now.

    (5)
  • Kiri D.

I order take-out from here regularly. It is close to my house and they have decent food. I usually order one of the soups and my favorite is the Won Ton Soup.

  • Stacy O.

I think there is something to be said for outdated decor in Chinese restaurants. Throw that aside. The food is good. Quick. Reasonably priced. Service is good, communication barrier aside. It's not fancy but it's good.

Christmas eve, all i wanted was noodles. I ordered veggie chow mien, so like every other Chinese restaurant iv been to, i expect noodles. What i got was sheer disappointment. Even the kung pow chicken i ordered taste limp. like the chicken was days old or something. I will never eat here again.

  • Donovan P.

This place is just ok. I have yet to find a really good Chinese restaurant near my home. The pork was ok, the orange chicken not so much, rice was also just ok. The worst part is the poor service I received with placing my pick up order. We called the order in and were told it would be ready in 15 mins. I thought, sure it is, so I gave them 20. My mistake, I ended up waiting another 20 mins while three different employees came up to me at 5 minute increments asking my name and exactly what I ordered. They offered no apology so I won't be going back ever.

  • Beth M.

By the way, they've changed the name to Yon's....don't know why. but the signs and menus all say "Yons" Funniest phone conversation ever when I called them: "Do you have a menu I can look at on line?" "Yes, chinesemenu-dot-com" "seriously? Chinesemenu-dot-com?" "Yes. chinesemenu-dot-com! Bye!" Well, you know I had to go there. It was under Yons....but it was there....their entire take-out menu scanned for my convenience. Go figure! This place is easily the best Chinese food in the Tigard area. I realize that is not saying much....but it was seriously good food. We ordered $60 worth of Chinese to go. it was amazingly fresh, hot, not overcooked and tasty. It even passed the leftover test.....meaning it warmed over in the microwave fine 2 days later..... I will go again.

Ordered the Mongolian beef with steam rice. Unfortunately I received the pork fried rice which seemed to be dry and overcooked. As for the beef, it as well been Mongolian onion with some beef. 7/8 of my to-go container was Onion and there was some beef on the bottom. The Mongolian beef sauce tasted good, just wished there was more beef in the dish and they maybe would have gotten an additional star from me but they did not even get my order right.

    (2)

Not great foot at all the lemon chicken was brought out as a whole sliced chicken breast with lemon sauce dumped on top. The rice was bland and greasy as well. I Guess the hunt for great Chinese continues.

I have lived here for 22 years and Yan's (now Yen's) has been a staple for okay Chinese food at cheap prices. The food is nothing to write home about, but there was always lots of it and some of it was pretty good. Over the years, however, things have changed and now, I think, they may have just over priced themselves out of business. Yan's food was better, but Yen's has been okay. It has always been the prices that were the major draw factor. Last night I picked up my order and a new to-go menu only to find that they had raised prices again! Now their prices are competitive to other, much better Chinese restaurants in the area. I'm not going to pay almost $11 for, say, Kung Pao Chicken when it's cheaper and a whole lot better at another restaurant. Even the Senior meal has gone up to $7.25 and it's a very limited menu. I'm sorry because it was a nice place to go when the finances were low, but no longer. Last night was the last time I'll be there.

Great lunch special!! Make sure to try an egg roll they are huge and the best thing on the menu, the general tso's is also great. Avoid the chow mein unless you like pounds of celery

  • Megan B.

Omg. Despite all these other positive reviews, please, for the love of everything that's holy, don't go here. My first red flag should have been that there were only white people eating here. No Asians? Me no eat. Vegetable Chow Fun: The four gallons of "sauce" had this gooey consistency that I have never seen in anything considered edible before. Listen. I'm not a picky person and will eat just about anything when my stomach tells me to, but I literally wouldn't consider anything we ordered here even remotely edible.

    (1)
  • Cody W.

Pretty uninspired and subpar by either the authentic or Americanized standard. Kung Pao chicken lacked heat or flavor and was unexpectedly saucy. If it weren't for the periodic raw gingerroot landmines, the ginger beef would have been similarly described. Cashew chicken, but for the cashews, was very similar in taste and appearance to the kung pao. BBQ Pork fried rice was decent, and the egg rolls were crisp. Chinese broccoli & mushrooms were up to snuff. Overall, our impression was that everything was very similar, and all dishes were likely to be similarly "gravied." It was certainly edible, and prices reasonable, but for takeout we definitely had something else in mind, and can't recommend it.

  • Mat D.

Very disappointed. I heard many good things about Yen's and was excited to finally try it out. We ordered pot stickers, lo mein, orange chicken and egg foo yung. Pot stickers were frozen, but were the best part of the dinner. Egg foo yung was flavorless mush, orange chicken had orange juice concentrate for a sauce and the low mein had pork that was more reminiscent of a pork chop than the bbq variety. Will not return.

Slopping through bogs looking for pussy willows builds up an appetite I tell ya! You oughta see my boots! It had been a lonnggg time since I'd been here for food, but absolutely nothing had altered. I ordered cashew chicken as always, and I ordered as take out so I could go down by the railroad tracks alone and watch for trains like I did when I was 6 or 7. (I got lucky; saw two trains!) Had I been thinking I woulda brought a decent bottle of chardonnay, but the thought didn't cross my mind. I mean, does chardonnay cross your mind when you are going pussy willow hunting in Verboort? Right! I didn't think so. :)) I used to walk up to this location with my Grandmother in the mid 50's to buy toy soldiers. The location where Yen's is was a dime store then. This was way before Tigard was afforded one of those green city limits/population signs, before it became part of northern California. If you don't look at the overpass where Highway 99 is now (used to go down Main Street) you can almost hear Tennessee Ernie Ford singing SIXTEEN TONS from that 49 Buick that just drove by the old S.P.& S. tracks. Yeah, that's it, wigwag train signals and cashew chicken!

  • Kristine P.

We called ahead to see if they prepare their food with MSG (I'm really sensitive to it). They said that they do, but would be happy to prepare our take-out order without MSG. REALLY? Wow, I was amazed that not only was the food delicious but it didn't have any MSG! Thanks Yen's that is what I call great customer service!

I love this place...so much so that even though their practice of charging per can of soda is a huge pet peeve for me, I'm still giving them 5 stars...I ordered a combo of sweet and sour chicken and kung pao chicken...damned if they didn't give me enough for two meals...and it was the absolute best chinese food I've ever had...the pork fried rice was simply heaven...and it was only 6.95 for the lunch special...I will continue to go here because it simply can't be beat....

I'm pretty tough with my reviews, & was TOTALLY surprised that I'm able to rate Yen's highly. We went in expecting boring, run-of-the-mill, American-Asian fare, but our suspicions were aroused when we saw a steady flow of take-out orders being carried past us. When our food came, it was a more than pleasant surprise. Now, this isn't what you might refer to as authentic, gourmet Cantonese fare or something you'd find at fine-dining Asian establishments. At Yen's what we got were VERY generous portions of freshly made, tasty, well seasoned, dishes that consisted of fresh, crisp vegetables & properly cooked meats (Shrimp & chicken this time). Even our pot-sticker appetizer was nicely prepared & presented. Sauces were adequate & didn't drench the dishes such as I experienced at Wu's (I just HATE having to hunt for pieces of food that are drowning in cornstarch-laden sauces). I'd prefer to see more Asian veggies in the dishes. Our dishes had nicely prepped celery, zucchini, and carrots with some water chestnuts, snow peas & bamboo shoots. Some bok-choy, long beans or loofah might give the dishes a more authentic feel. Still, what was presented was of good quality & nicely done. I'm not sure of how or what reviewer Marie was experiencing during her visit. We sensed no foul or musty odors, the place was very clean & well maintained but certainly DID have the amusing decor to which she referred (Kinda added to the charm of the place). OH, BTW, Marie, there must be as many variations of Gen.Tso's chicken out there as there are Chinese restaurants, and breaded is the norm in most of them... not all,... just most. And "Most" of the dishes on the menu are NOT breaded. Those that are seemed to be noted as such, so I just avoid them (Although I'd REALLY prefer to order them... damn cholesterol). The place got really crowded by 5-ish with what seemed to be many regulars. I won't be a "Regular", but I'll certainly come back when I have a taste for this style of food.

This is one of those places... and in Tigard this is that place; you know the one. That old fashioned Chinese food place that serves a massive amount of decent food, without a massive dent to your funds. Is it perfect food? No. But you know that going in. What it is, is a perfect experience of those Chinese food places that seemed to be everywhere in the 90's. It seemed that back then every family had "their place" they went. And most of those places aren't there. But this one is. This isn't super gourmet food, nor is it fast food. This is middle of the road food that has a good flavor and is disguised as trashy. You get exactly what you pay for. So yeah, I'm sold.

  • Emma H.

If you're looking for a restaurant that has great food for a great price, then you can't get much better than this restaurant. The servings are large and tasty. The only reason why I didn't give this place 5 stars is because the some of wait staff don't speak well enough English and it's hard to understand and be understood sometimes, but if you don't need anything special, this won't be an issue.

Amazing food. Best eggrolls in the world and make sure to give the general tso's a try. Such an incredible deal a ton of food for roughly $6

Standard reliable old school Chinese. I walked in and ordered take out. I received my order, in what seemed like 3 minutes. I'm not sure how they are delivering food out so quickly..?.. I will be back for a second visit.

Pork fried rice was really good but the orange chicken was off today, other than that its always pretty good.
