Decent lunch. We had tostadas and they hit the spot . Not the best Mexican food, not the worst. Nice patios and dog friendly!

I went here for a nice meal with my parents, mainly because we have had ate at the Bend location and we were never disappointed, unfortunately after eating at the Sunriver location I have now had a river of gravy slosh flowing out my ol' brown hole for two days ...,we should have left this fine astablishment when it was completely empty and got ourselves a sandmich from the deli at the store only go here if you need to fast on a diet , you will lose at least 5lbs of waste from your body after eating here.... as of now i got to go ice my hemroid I got from this place after white nuckleing it on the toliet for two days.

We loved the outdoor seating and everyone in our family was happy with their order. Very attentive and friendly staff, just seemed unorganized which slowed down service a little, but they were busy-ish. We really liked the chips/salsa and guac. Nachos, burrito, tortilla soup and quesadillas were all a hit. Will eat here again for sure.

Stay away!! This place is ridiculous! We went in on Saturday evening with a large group (16) we did not expect to be able to sit together with this many people on a busy evening so we split up into two groups. After waiting over 15 minutes for someone to come to the table (no water no chips no contact) after being seated our server finally came over to take a drink order, we all had decided on our meals as well so we proceeded to place our order. After my family placed our order we said we would be on one check, the waiter informed us that they do not do separate check and in a very condescending way said "its printed right on the menu" we said okay we will figure it out. At that time the waiter noticed my daughter laughing. What he did not know is she was laughing with me because she is also a server and her restaurant tried the same policy and it failed miserably. When he saw her he took a step toward her and in a very confrontational manner said" what are you laughing at, if your not happy with our policy you can go somewhere else" he stood there and waited for her to respond. she was absolutely dumbfounded and just said she was fine. Then he proceeded to move down the table taking orders, when the other half of the party started to order and asked for a separate check because they did not see our little issue he restated the policy obviously very frustrated and just walked off to another table. We all looked at each other and said did that just happen? then preceded to get up and take our money to an establishment that appreciated our business. I do feel a little fortunate that we did not stay because the other half of our group was inside and did eat there said the food was marginal at best. One of our group did ask for the owner to talk about the server and his response was he was having a bad day and it was to busy for him to do anything about him. Well if he provides service like that he wont have to worry about being to busy!!

This is a very standard Mexican restaurant. The same menu choices, chips, salsa, etc. that you would find at most Mexican restaurants. The service was appropriately attentive. The food tasted fine and it was plentiful. Interestingly, they do charge for refills on the standard free chips & salsa. At 2pm, midweek, in the winter, we were the only ones there. It was neither great nor terrible. Our refried beans were not watery and we needed Tapatio (but I always do).

The food here is good. It is the typical Mexican restaurant. The service is a bit slow. Don't expect to get in and out in any reasonable time. Came for lunch at 2pm, sat down at 2:05pm and our food arrived at 2:50pm...just be prepared and you will be fine.

So with all the mexicans that live near Bend, why can't they find one who can cook and employ him/her there? Heartburn nonstop for a good 5 hours after dinner here. chips kind of stale, bottled beer was fine. They dont have Horchata, COME ON!, prices are fair, but the food is crap. you can do far better from a good taco truck.

Positives First - Good location, nice decor, authentic Mexican paintings and decorations. I liked the atmosphere due to the Spanish music in the background. The waiters were nice. Negatives - The person who can take lessons from the waiters is the manager, Carlos. He was rude and obnoxious!!! If he's having a bad day, he shouldn't take it out on his customers. He should be FIRED because this so-so business will be losing customers because of him! All the people who have rated this restaurant as having authentic Mexican food have not had REAL authentic Mexican food, most likely because they have not traveled out of Oregon. Their food lacked flavor and was tasteless. Their tacos had ground beef! Really?? Authentic Mexican restaurants use shredded beef!!! Despite the flavorless food, if I was desperate, I would still go there except I will NEVER step foot in there again due to their rude manager Carlos!

I'm basically giving them one star for taking my order and bringing it to the table. The downside was poor customer service, particularly in relation to assisting my father in law with a menu, when he asked them what beers they had. The waiter acted like it was such an effort to run down their beer list. He was pretty rude to a customer who has memory issues. Didn't score any points. Food was mediocre... Not as good as most taco trucks around, and with a $10 entree at the bottom on the cost side, too expensive for lousy food. Don't waste your money or your time on this place. My guess is since they have a relatively captive audience at Sunriver they don't have to care about customer service. My last time there, Wish I had looked them up on Yelp first.

I have read the reviews and anyone that has given this restaurant below 4 stars, I question their palate and sanity. My family has been visiting Sunriver for 9 years and El Caporal has never disappointed! Vinancio and his crew make the best food, drinks and provide the best service around; and we are not a small group (+8)! Thank you again Vinancio for the amazing food and exceptional service! See you again next year!

A large group of us ate here and found it to be better than expected. Exceptional salsa, chile verde, fajitas and mole sauce. Great flavor and quality ingredients. The guys working here also were super friendly and very efficient. We will definitely dine here again.

what an awkward experience. First we got in there and sat in the waiting area. First thing we notice is two rechargeable floor vacuums full of hair and food stuck all over them right at the front entrance where you sit and wait to get a table. One of our family members accidentally put there hand on it getting up. Then we final got our table after 5 minutes. We sat at the table for a good 10 or 15 minutes with nothing but water. There were at least 5 tables empty inside and 4 tables empty outside. A girl came over who obviously had no idea what she was doing and said we had a very busy day and we don't have any chips left but we are trying to make some more. We all smiled and said OK no problem. Another 5 minutes pass still just water. The waiter finally comes over and says can I take your order. We say can you please do separate checks. He says no I'm sorry the computer wont let me. We were all like what do you mean we have different forms of payment and we need separate checks he said no I'm sorry I can not do that. There was seven of us in our party. One of the other people with us say it states right here in your menu that you can do separate checks for parties of 8 people or under (we were 7). He says thats an old menu I can't do separate checks anymore and I'm very busy what can I get for you guys. I say I've never heard someone say they can't do separate checks in my long life on this earth. I say just pretend like some of our party is sitting in one of the empty tables outside, he says I cant do separate checks. I asked to speak to the manager he said I am the manager I said who is the owner he says I am the owner. It got so uncomfortable that we all decided to walk out and go over to Village Bar and Grill and spend our money there. And of course at Village Bar and Grill they said no problem doing separate checks with a smile. If that man was really the owner he needs some serious lessons in customer service. We will never go back there and we have lived in sunriver for 10 years and would have been regular customers for life Sunriver needs another Mexican restaurant so they have some competition.

The best guacamole ever!!!! Abby was so sweet and accommodating we loved her and the food! (Margaritas too!)

Decent Mexican food for Sunriver....(we are from San Jose and have a ton of Mexican choices) but it's good and the margarita's are good. We ordered the flauta's - one chicken and one beef, crisp and not deep fried. Tasty! With sour cream and salsa. Very good. Kids had tacos and enchiladas and burritos.... all pretty standard fair... and good.... margaritas are good! We always stop in - summer and winter - when in Sunriver and eat here. Big portions. Wait staff are nice.

Best restaurant in Sunriver and a favorite of mine anywhere. Service is fantastic and margaritas are sure to please. Salsa is spicy and shrimp diablo is my favorite!

We had a wonderful meal. All four of us were thrilled with the taste and presentation of our food. Service was great and on point. The seafood salad was phenomenal. Tres Caballos which my husband had was beyond great I had to steal one of his bacon wrapped prawns. The other two in our party had an enchilada and chimichanga and loved them. I am not sure why people gave bad reviews because we will be back!

It appears that the infamous Carlos, or another male acting with ultimate authority, has burned customers again with his rudeness and lack of customer service. A group of 7 of us (including 2 elderly parents) called about reservations and on learning they do not accept them, drove down realizing a large group would likely have to wait. We were told 30 minutes. While waiting we noticed that a family of 4 was seated at an 8 top while a waitress was folding napkins on a 4 top; I would have seated people differently but whatever. We checked in about 40 minutes into our 30 minute wait and were told that while there was a large booth which we could add a chair to, 'our' table was opening right up-5 minutes max. Sure enough the people left in about 5 minutes, happily raving about the food, and wait staff got right to cleaning up. Right as we started to stand up, another large family waltzed in and were greeted by 'Carlos' who led them to 'our' table, saying to them: 'Here's your table!' Seeing this happen, a couple of us said-hey wait, that's our table (having been told that by the waitress just 5 minutes ago) and one lady said: 'we called ahead and had a reservation!' Say what!! What about 'No Reservations'?! We complained but Carlos talked it away and essentially said these regular customers get special service. And here we had waited for over 45 minutes with an 86 and an 88 year old! While we stood outside in stunned indignation, the waitress who had been so nice came out and apologized. Then the manager, whatever his name is, came out with ONE margarita and tried to talk it away some more. Are you kidding me? I will never know if their food is good or bad because I will NEVER go back. Btw, the booth was gone by then but who cares? We left and we had a GREAT dinner at Marcellos across the street, where the service and food were both wonderful. Carlos, or whoever you are, you take first place in the idiot (I just can't bring myself to use the word I really want to use) hall of fame. And I'm only giving it one star because yelp won't let you post an unrated review. I'd prefer to leave NO stars

Just had an excellent lunch here with my husband. Delicious burrito, not too cheesy or greasy like at some Mexican restaurants. The meat was flavorful and tender. We got a side of guacamole and it was very fresh tasting. The service was good and it is a cozy atmosphere. My husband is a burrito fiend and says it was one of the best burritos he has had in a long time.

The outdoor seating in the summer time can't really be beat; the location is right in the middle of the Sunriver Village and gives you a perfect spot to listen to live music, people watch and enjoy the sunshine. Unfortunately the food is just not very good at all. I also ordered a perfect margarita and it was pretty weak. If you order bottled beers and visit the restaurant just to enjoy a nice day, your experience will be great, just don't come expecting tasty Mexican food. Even the chips and salsa were lacking flavor in my opinion.

My experience at El Caporal caught me completely off guard. My family and I have been plenty of times before and have been happy with the service and food. But this time was simply unacceptable!! I went in to grab tacos and rice and beans for my family of 4, to go. First of all, it took about 15 mins before the server finally came to take my order with only one other family in the restaurant. I ignored it... No big deal. Then it took almost an hour for me to finally get the food. When I was checking the food, there was simply wayyyyy too much rice and beans. I said for 4 people and it was two huge trays of rice and beans for a huge catering party. And the bill reflected it ( $30 for rice and beans for 4 people?! Ridiculous) so I asked the server (which I later found out was also the restaurant Manager, CARLOS) if I could get smaller portions of the rice and beans because I didn't need that much--- only for 4, not a party of 20. He refused and continued on about taking it or leaving it because he doesn't deal with "picky" people like me. His tone and attitude was completely offensive to a young woman like myself, let alone any human being. When I stated my discontent with his actions and attitude, he tossed the bill on the table and told me he doesn't care if I like it or ever come back... that they've been in business for so long that they don't need my business or any of my friend's, family's or patient's business. He continued on with such rudeness while I was on edge of tears. I was so taken back by the Manager, CARLOS that just left $30 less than what the bill was and left without the rice and beans. On my way out to my car, one of the cooks ran out to me and apologized for CARLOS's rude and disrespectful attitude towards me. He had witnessed the entire thing and said the manager gets like that sometimes. It made me feel a lot better but I was still very upset. I will NEVER EVER RETURN TO EL CAPORAL in Sunriver because of the MANAGER CARLOS. What a shame for the Caporal Owner to have such a rotten human being as a representative of their business.

I'm underwhelmed, and not for any good reason I suppose. This Mexican restaurant is located in the Village Shops next to the Sunriver Resort, which caters to rich white folk (read: bland). The food was hot and not terrible, but severely lacking in spice (flavor) and the refried beans on the enchilada plate were incredibly watery. Table chips and salsa was... okay. The chips were a little stale tasting and the salsa is the kind that is cooked and jarred, then refrigerated, then served. Boozy drinks were a little on the weak side as well.

Hands down the best salsa I have ever had, crunchy, fresh corn chips. We ordered the Carne Asada, it was very good, and the portion was generous, rice and beans were standard fare. Nice touch was they alternated our tortillas, corn, flour, so one person didn't have to dig down. The service was attentive and friendly but not overly so. It's a touch expensive but we are in a resort so, we expected it. We were happy with our meal. They are new to Sunriver, have been here since 2010 but in Bend for many, many years.

The price point is okay and the food is so-so. However, a disappointment is the service. There were six people in our party, and only 50% of the orders came from the kitchen correct...mostly because the server didn't listen to our instructions (e.g., no meat, add sour cream, etc.). Furthermore, it was difficult to get the server's attention. Next year when we visit Sunriver, we will probably avoid dining at El Caporal as there are better options.

The "perfect margarita" is actually made from fresh squeezed juices, and the crab enchiladas were amazing. The Camarones Mexicanos were fantastic as well. The service was impeccable, attentive without being over-bearing. The restaurant was clean, and the staff were friendly. Anyone that doesn't like their food has to have some other reason than authenticity, because it was 100% authentic (including the piquito Sangría after the meal). The prices are very reasonable for what you get. I would recommend being a little more adventurous than tacos or fajitas here, and really explore the menu :-)

Best and only mexican restaurant in Sunriver. Great service. Good vegetarian selection. They need better signage, it's a little difficult to find if you're not familiar with Sunriver.

Stopped in off season and since we were the only people there, service was fast. We ordered two drinks ( a beer and a very sour lemon drop with no sugared rim) and an appetizer ( chicken taquitos that were more like flautas, which is better in my opinion anyways) which was pretty good. We looked over the menu and the prices seemed the same as any other Mexican restaurant. Pricing seemed more than fair for a resort. Not sure if I would go back, I can make some mean tacos in my own rented resort kitchen. If I had tried their relleno, then I would know for sure...as that is my ultimate deciding factor for any Mex place.

We ate here when the new owners first took over after the departure of El Pescador. The food was pretty good.... but it now it seems those days are gone. The halibut fish tacos were so cooked to death (maybe even microwaved).... you could not even tell it was fish; more like little pieces of rubber. The portions have also noticably dwindled in size. If you want your 2 Tbls. salsa bowl refilled, they now charge you an addional $1.50. This is the only Mexican style restaurant in Central Oregon that follows this practice to my knowledge. Wake up call !!!!!! People buy more drinks and eat more food when you keep the salsa and chips coming. The feeling you get is most of their business is from the tourist, so just mess them over because they probably won't be back anyway. El-Caporal don't forget that the locals are the ones who will keep you going year around. Also, must disagree with Portland, the Margaritas are low quality and weak. Good luck and good riddens. Salute.

Review of the Sunriver El Caporal: Friday lunch today. Was seated immediately, given water and took our drink orders right away. Lunch came in a timely fashion and friendly service. Menu offered only bowl of tortilla soup when I just wanted a cup. No problem and it was muy deliciosa! My husband ordered the taco and enchilada combo and I also ordered the fish tacos. The halibut was slightly over cooked, but was still yummy. We would definitely go back even if it's just for the tortilla soup!

WORST SERVICE EVER! El Caporal in Sunriver has hands down The worst service I've ever received in a restaurant. Not only did it take more than 20 minutes before we could place our dinner order, their Mojitos were watered down, and when we asked for them to be remade, they took the drinks and never came back! We asked again for our drinks 20 minutes later and we're told "sorry, we only make our mojitos one way. If you don't like them, we can't help you." Our waiter walked away mid conversation and never brought us our drinks, or offered us the opportunity to order something else. Our food when it finally came was mediocre. We also tried to ask for extra napkins and silverware, but our waiter was in such a rush to move to the next table, we never were able to. The lack of service in this restaurant was unconscionable. For anyone headed to Sunriver on vacation, STEER CLEAR of El Caporal!!

Wow! I'm surprised at all the low reviews. Coming from Portland, I have access to pretty damn good Mexican. I didn't expect much from this place, but the Prawn Fajitas were EXCELLENT! The flavor was great, the servers were prompt and attentive. The margaritas were delish! I wouldn't expect mind blowing mexican, but if you choose things other than 'beans and rice' dishes, you may be pleasantly surprised!

90 minute wait for other places. 10 minute here and for a reason! Worst service I've had in years. Drink refills? No. Chip refills after being asked? No. Dinner was not ordered at all, but I ordered? Margarita comes out with no salt when I asked for salt? Then to top it off our bill is $95 and she tries to charge us $190! 20 minutes for drinks, 35 for food. To survive in Sunriver village you have to be on it during peak season. This company will close within a year because they don't know what service means. I asked for the manager and I got our waitress, and then some guy behind her staring me down. Then when we complained she blamed it on us. Absolute joke of a business. Whomever is running this restaurant your days of owning a successful business are over. Might as well throw in the towel now. You've failed miserably. If I could compare this experience to dislocating my shoulder. I think I would take the shoulder.

Sunriver location - My 2 young daughters and I went in for dinner and were seated right away. Our order was taken and our drinks were brought promptly. However, it took over 40 minutes for our food to arrive! In that time, no one came to check on us or refill our chip basket. I am SO glad I let the girls bring books with them into the restaurant. It took their minds off of being hungry. I can't even call the taco salad I ordered mediocre. The picadillo was so plain, covered by some iceberg, a little cheese and a slice of tomato. That's it. The kids' said their meals were okay, but with the time we waited for that meal, I wanted something that tasted good. I don't need San Diego Mexican food, but I want something better than Taco Bell. I was truly disappointed.

I've probably eaten worse Mexican food; I just can't remember when. Bland. The rice of the "rice and beans" was crispy. The salsa reminded me of canned tomato soup. At least we got seated right away.

This restaurant review is for Sunriver restaurant. There were 9 of us for dinner and everyone was pleased with their meals. We had yummy (and perfectly potent) margaritas. I had the tacos camorone that was super yummy and fresh. This is one of the best restaurants I've been to in Sunriver. It's nice to not have to drive into Bend to get a good meal. Great service, great for kids.

I would give El Caporal in Sunriver zero stars if I could. Go across the village to the Brewhouse and have a good meal. I agree with the other reviewers, that this is just a pathetic business, and they figure you're tourists and won't return anyway. My friend owns a restaurant and I've worked in many, so we are easy diners. We understand if a restaurant's having a bad night. This was not the problem. We waited over an hour for our food, and when we inquired (no-one came over to say anything) of the manager, he literally yelled at us, and the waiter thereafter gave us dirty looks-the manager never emerged again. Several tables that came after us had been in and out prior to us getting our food. The manager said, "the other tables ordered simple food." Huh? We ordered quesadillas, a tostada and fajitas. After we complained, an undercooked quesadilla came. Five or six minutes later, my tostada (not appetizing, mostly lettuce, yucky beef, a few tiny pieces of diced tomato). My husband's fajitas didn't come until after I was almost done. No apologies, no query if everything was okay (they knew it wasn't). One steak fajita for one son came out, the other came way later, and the two looked very different. All in all, the food was some of the worst we'd ever had, and the rudeness, apathy and horrible service made it noteworthy enough to write a review on vacation.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
