This is for the Winchester bay location as not on yelp. Food 3 stars, service less than 1 star. Longest wait I've ever had, made worse with 2 young kids. Took 20 min to order, another hour for food. Food was two fish and chip baskets and coleslaws. Asked for check 3 times, never got it. Many many people walked out. Had to go in and push to pay there. Was not that crowded and service did not apologize or make experience better. Real shame as great location and decent food. Nice to eat on water and see ducks, birds, etc. Real contrast to the service, food and speed of king Neptune up the hill (though no ambiance). They had the same volume, same amount of people working and were quick with a smile.

We had a wonderfully freshly lightly battered fried Captain's Platters and Fish and Chips dinner. The service was attentive, fast and friendly. We would come back when we visit Winchester Bay again.

We really wanted to like this place. It's a cute boat anchored in Winchester Bay. Ducks and seagulls provide entertainment and the boat bobs a bit with the tides. It's very cozy and looks like it would have really great fish and chips. The waiter was very friendly. Unfortunately, my wife's halibut fish and chips at $14.95 was 'fishy': her term for fish that's not fresh. My cod tasted fresh, but the herb seasoning was not what I expected. Not a bad seasoning, but perhaps it's an acquired taste. The chips were good. My wife's tea was good, but my coffee was watery. Cole slaw doesn't come with the baskets. Paper plates and plastic forks. The restrooms are the public ones in the parking lot. Understandably, the washing of dishes and disposal of dishwater and sewage would be difficult for a moored boat.

We tried to have lunch at Ungers in Winchester Bay on a Sat. . It was slammed with one waitress running crazy. Most tables had not ordered yet either. After 20 min wait we caught her to say we would come back another time. Monday we took some friends went back at 7:30 for dinner. A few people eating still, we ordered beer and placed orders for fish & chips. At 8pm the waitress said the propane tank went out for the cooktop! It would be a while there was an order before. 2 people came in & we're told 20 min wait to just order. At 8:30 she offered cups of chowder. 8:45 she said we were next the food was over cooked . We found out the owner has another place in Coos bay she takes care of. I felt bad for the staff trying so hard to please everyone. The food in the photos looks great however we have eaten here every summer and the food and portions are not very good any longer. Sharon B

Please don't read this... I don't want anyone else to know how really cool this place is. Otherwise I might have to wait for a table... So Only read this if you are a local and have been there before. No newbies... I absolutely love this place. How cool is it that you have to walk out on a dock and "climb aboard" your lunch location? They have a main barge that has the kitchen in it with some tables and chairs. Then there is a float with their storage and an outdoor eating area with glass surrounds to help you avoid the wind. Then a third float with more seating. They have appetizers and plenty of seafood options. I have a weakness for clam chowder, so the bread bowl called me out... it was buttered first, which gave the lid a wonderful taste as I dipped it in the chowder. Really enjoyed it. I ate thru 1/2 the bowl and loved every bite. The prices are really reasonable. Make sure you check the posted days as they do close during the week. I was there on Tuesday and it was open, but I think they were closed on Wednesday. The waitress was a bit slow to get to us and there was only 2 others, but the food came really quick. It was bread bowls, so i assume that goes quicker than other items. This is such a cool place that beats the heck out of other sit down or chain restaurants for a quick lunch. And you can even feel the barge rockin side to side, really adding to the experience. I stop here at least one a month, on every trip to southern coast. If I lived closer I would be here every week!

Great fish and chips and we love sitting right on the bay! Service can be slow at times but they are always busy and are doing their best. We come to the southern Oregon coast multiple times a year and always make time to stop here!

Excellent service. Great view. Loved the food. We can't wait to come back next DuneFest and visit. The captains platter was awesome.

Sadly, the first time we came here (a few months ago), they were swamped. We waited 20 min and finally left for we were never brought even menus or acknowledged. I vowed to give them another try ... so here we are. We came in about 1:30 in the afternoon a few days after Christmas thinking they wouldn't be busy - driving by we didn't see anyone seated outside - so we thought this might be the time to go. Sadly, this wasn't the case. As we were with my mom and she had her dog with her so we sat at an outside table. I went inside to the counter to order for all of us but was told orders would be taken table side. We waited a good 10 min - time enough to exchange a few gifts, in fact - before we were given menus. The waiter took another 10 min to return for our orders. We ordered simply ... a cup of chowder for everyone, a large order of calamari fries, an order of cheesy bread, and soda to drink. Drinks were brought out in timely fashion and food followed soon thereafter in expected time. We each ordered a small soda and were surprised that for $1.60, the soda was 8 oz only. Chowder was delicious and cheesy bread was pretty good, though my 10-yr old daughter (whose become quite the foodie) felt it had too much cheese. The calamari was a disappointment. I had ordered a large but it was served in a small size paper deli tray (the standard red & white paper bowl things you see everywhere at mom & pop diners). Portion size aside - which can be overlooked if the food is good - the 'fries' were overcooked. Had it not been so cold and the service so slow, I'd have sent them back. I won't be back.

If I could give this place zero stars, I would. These people are racist. Being Asian, we go in and are told to wait. We waited for over 10 minutes and they never took our order. Then another family comes in and they took their order right away. Don't come to this place if you are not white.

This is one of the highlights of our dining experience when we visit Winchester Bay every year. TClam chowder bread bowls has to have the right combination of tasty clam chowder and the right sourdough bread. Unger's makes the perfect combination of the two. Although I enjoyed it more last year (more buttery and toasted sourdough), it's still great. The fish is very tasty (fish and chips) and fresh and the oysters (fried and breaded) are obviously local and the best anywhere (on the skimpy side). It's better than anyplace I've tried on the wharf in Monterey, CA. I'll definitely be going back in 2015.

As picky people when it comes to good seafood, I would have to say this place is on top of its game for fresh, tasty, and filling food. Its not a fancy 5 star restaurant, but its exactly the kind of place you would expect when you go. Its houseboats in the bay set up as a restaurant! The kids thought that was the coolest thing ever! The Halibut and chips were to die for, perfectly seasoned, perfectly breaded, and perfectly cooked, as were the shrimp, clams, and scallops. Even the non-seafood fare was good! My daughter had the steak bites, and if you're not in the mood for seafood, I highly recommend them! Not only that, but the portions were HUGE! We will most definitely be back again!

The location is cool. A little floating fish and chip joint on the marina docks. We stayed at the rv park and rode our bikes over. The view of the sunset was amazing. My girls liked feeding the ducks while waiting for our food. They have a coin operated feeder. The food was good. Just picture a floating deep fryer! The poor waitress was slammed. Just her and 1 cook for the entire place. They handled it perfectly with a great attitude. They even let us bring in gf buns for my child with allergies. Could do with a few more beers on the list ;)

    (4)
  • Lora L.

I have a gluten allergy. Many restaurants to not know how to cater to allergies. Our waitress was knowledgable on what foods were gluten free, friendly and personable. The food was tasty....I had grilled halibut and sweet potato fries. We also played a scrabble game and played past closing time and did not feel rushed to finish our game. What a great small business! The location was lovely as well. Right on the water in a boat. Really fun spot.

  • Steve F.

Here's what we liked about this place. Its close enough to ride your bike from the RV Park over to this on-the-dock restaurant. I guess I can call these Cons: Very Small, Very limited seating. So, that being labeled I will say the food was "OK". We got Fish and Chips and Razor Clams. Nothing stands out about the food. But then noting to complain about. All in all a place we will use again when staying in Winchester Bay. Our takeout was done and ready very quickly. Decent menu with good quantities of food items. Convenient to the marina, and different rv and recreational venues close by saving a trip into Reedsport.

One of our favorite places to eat when we visit Winchester Bay. We love the chicken, fish, and chowder. The only thing we didn't care for were the steak strips.

  • Donna M.

We came here on "DuneFest" weekend. Good service and the food was excellent. Three clam chowder bowl was really good and full of fresh clams. The Halibut was delicious and the captain's plate was great. I loved the fresh seafood. Fresh Cod, scallops, shrimp and oysters . All yum! We'll be back of course!!

Since my last name is Unger when we traveled right through Winchester Bay I just had to stop and try out this little floating restaurant on the water. My hopes and expectations were quickly dashed when I noticed they were using frozen fish fillet's to make the fish and chips meal. Being right on the coast and literally located right in the marina you would think they would have fresh fish every day. That they would tenderly bask these fresh fillets in some kind of delicious spiced beer batter and then fry them to Golden perfection where they melted in your mouth. The result? A typical, mediocre, run-of-the-mill fried food joint and there was nothing special about the clam chowder either. On our next coastal trip we will be sure to miss this place.

    (2)
  • Marshall K.

My wife and I both had the clam chowder and thought it was average but it was thick which we liked. Also, we both liked the fish but thought that a thicker, crispier breading would have been better. I liked the fries. We stayed in an RV on the dock so it was very convenient.

  • Pam C.

Left us waiting at least 45 minutes with no contact, we left. I do not leave places, but these guys were awful. Do not go there..... Terrible service

  • Gwenyth F.

Unger's is a favorite stop of mine. It's basically a floating restaurant connected to the dock. They have really good seafood.I like the clam chowder in a bread bowl. What makes it special are the little touches. Some of the seating is outdoors, and it's nice. There is a little area with tables where you can look out over the bay. They sell duck food for 25 cents in machines by the entrance, so bring your quarters. You even get a gummy worm with the bill.....

    (5)
  • James B.

A Great place to have lunch or a snack. The prices are very reasonable and the food is very good. They even have a happy hour with beer coming in at $2.50. The smallish restaurant is floating so if prone to sea sickness you might want to pick a calm day to eat there. A very friendly and fun place on Winchester Bay.

    (3)
  • Roger W.

Not sure about the poor reviews. Maybe because we were the only ones there. It is so cool to eat on a rebuilt houseboat. The fish-N-Chips were outstanding. Very nice waiter and quick service. Keep your eyes open or you will drive right on by. It is tucked down the dock and kind of hidden but the food is great.

Good fish and chips. Portion is small but good for a light lunch. Tasty clam chowder too. Glad to have found this place. Would definitely come back for more fish and chips.

An anomaly, phenomenon, complete shocker. Here we are, in one of the most scarcely populated locations I've experienced, and we enter this cute little fishing boat restaurant to find it PACKED! Literally every table is filled. So we eat at the outdoor picnic table, which is really no inconvenience since the already spectacular view is only enhanced by the outdoor seating. Menu was typical for a Fish and Chips place but food was great. The fish and chips were crispy, clam chowder creamy, and sweet potato fries crunchy and fresh (well as fresh as fries can be). The service was perfect. Everything came quickly and correctly and the waiter was pleasant and polite. Sooo... next time you're crabbing, fishing, or simply relishing in the sights of good old Umpqua, stop in and try some chowder!

    (4)
  • Jessica S.

The clam chowder was good and that was about it. My husband and I got the Captains platter which is 19.99 each and bye the time we got our food a hour and a half after we were seated our food was over deep fried I couldn't eat half of it due to it being deep fried to a crisp. We ended up hitting McDonald's before heading home. Very disappointed!! Avoid this place.

  • Juli G.

Decent fried foods, Hubby's grilled fish was over-done. I chose the chowder bowl, it was EXCELLENT. Freshest bread I've had was eaten down to the last bite. The waitress was very sweet, tho too harried for even a smile. One waitress for 3 boats and an outdoor area was stretching the poor girl too thin.

  • Sher R.

Good food. Unfortunately, we were behind a large group & our order took forever. Our server was rather sassy, not a pleasant experience. However, the food was very good. Probably won't go back. Glad we tried it. We has a long trip ahead of us & the delay of food & then getting our check was very inconvenient. Had the server been pleasant instead of sarcastic, the experience would not have been so bad.

we regularly find their cart at all of the South Coast fairs and festivals. Their Fish and Chips are truly the best. They use a batter with fresh herbs in it, and that makes them so tasty. Fries are really good, too! Find the restaurant at Winchester Bay, take a left once you come down the hill coming from Coos Bay, and all the way down to the waterfront. If you want to find the food cart at the festivals, it's called Unger's Aquari-Yumm, even though the G in Unger's looks like a C. For the longest time I thought the name was Uncer's.

Not very fair for someone who doesn't eat much seafood to review a seafood joint, now is it? But... they do serve chicken strips and burgers for those of us who don't care for fish. I have to say, the people were wonderful when we ate there. The food was pretty good, but nothing to write home about. But as stated... I don't even really care for the SMELL of fish! Loved the concept of the location! A boat in the harbor, with "wings" to choose from for your floating dining pleasure. Often a harbor seal will come right up on the walkway next to the window as you eat! Great fun! For me... I'd go back likely again and again, if for nothing else a little bit "different" dining experience. And... I have to say nice people can make all the difference between an okay place to eat and a really great pick! Such was the case at Unger's.

This was the worst dining experience you could imagine. We left without being served our food. We had been waiting about an hour. There is no reason for a fish & chips place to be this slow. On top of this the waiter was rude and did not apologize.

I had the clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl and it was so delicious! From the clam chowder to the the yummy bread. My parents had the Captains platter with clams, oysters, scallops, halibut, shrimp and yam fries. They let me try theres and it was so delicious! I would definitely make the drive from Florence again to eat here.

Follow the signs to T dock. It's fun having lunch on the water. The view is beautiful. Started with a cup of clam chowder-very tasty with chunks of potato and some pieces of clams. We'd give it 3 1/2stars for the flavor and creaminess. They didn't have any fish that wasn't fried but we decided it was worth a try since the view was so nice. My husband had the fried oysters since they were local. I had the half & half which comes with fried fish & your choice of shrimp, clams, oysters or scallops. I chose the oysters. My husband absolutely loved the oysters. My fish was good-Alaskan cod & had a very light breading (so it still felt kinda healthy) and was very flaky. I liked the oysters (the squishy part was more than I could handle) but think next time I would try the scallops or clam strips. The fries were very good-thin and crispy and plenty of them. There was one waitress and it wasn't super fast (wasn't super slow either though) but she was friendly and the view was beautiful. Relax, enjoy the view of the water, the boats or feed the ducks!

First of all, anytime a restaurant's address is "T. Dock Off Salmon Harbor Dr", you know this formerly landlocked fella is going to geek out. Yes, this boat probably hasn't actually been out on open water in a decade plus, and yes the service was a complete cluster-eff, BUT YOU'RE ON A BOAT! Oh, and the food is pretty dang good, too. The place seems to be known for fish and chips At our table of 6, we had an order of the default cod, plus the upgraded halibut. Both were tasty, with large portions and nice breading that wasn't at all soggy, but you'd be wise to pay the extra couple bucks for the halibut. I opted for the halibut sandwich and thought it was awesome, and my buddy let me snag a popcorn shrimp and it too was delicious. Maybe I just like fried seafood? And thank god the food was good, because everything else was chaos! The place was hardly busy and was still horribly understaffed. The poor two women working the entire operation were running around like crazy, but they still weren't able to cover all the bases. Rather than do so at the table, we had to walk up to the counter to place our orders and request checks, get more drinks, etc. They really need to keep more people on staff! But whatever. Everything here was kind of a hot mess, but I'd still totally go back for another one of those halibut sandwiches.

    (4)
  • George S.

Food was good. The batter on the halibut was light and left room to taste the fish. Chowder was mostly potatoes but decent. The service, however, was simply awful. Ordered drinks....15 minutes later I had to go and ask for them. Another 45 minutes for our fish and chips. Brought the wrong order (happened to the group next to us too). Bill was incorrect as well. With many other options in town, i would definitely pass on a return visit.

We ate here 1 year ago in late June 2014. The service and food was excellent, also good ice tea. Will definitely return. The chowder excellent. OK so we are back again it's July 12,2015. The halibut fish and chips are amazing, not greasy and the chowder just like last year, Yum O. The waitress was amazing so friendly and brought our food in a timely manner. We are foodies and picky I would highly recommend.

My wife and I have taken my parents there many times. We have never had bad service. My wife loves the Cole Slaw, and the fish and chips. I love the Clam Chowder in the bread bowl, and fish and chips. It appears to me, that others that are dining there at the same time as we do are enjoying good service and food too. I am sure at times you might get bad service or food that you can't eat, much like any other restaurant where every you go. I have never had that experience here. We have been eating at Unger's for over 6 years. We were there in November with my parents. It is always the place we go to when we are in Winchester Bay.

The Halibut and Chips were amazing and the atmosphere and service were great! What a wonderful experience!

One of our favorite places to eat when we visit Winchester Bay. We love the chicken, fish, and chowder. The only thing we didn't care for were the steak strips.

My wife and I both had the clam chowder and thought it was average but it was thick which we liked. Also, we both liked the fish but thought that a thicker, crispier breading would have been better. I liked the fries. We stayed in an RV on the dock so it was very convenient.

Left us waiting at least 45 minutes with no contact, we left. I do not leave places, but these guys were awful. Do not go there..... Terrible service

Great fish and chips! The fish was delicious and fresh, and the batter was perfect! The chips/fries were good but plain (could have used more seasoning). Cute and funky location :)
