I'm so bummed. I was very excited about a local sushi place, and I ordered a lot and took it home to enjoy. But--it was really just awful. I know we're spoiled here in Portland as far as sushi goes--but this wasn't just okay sushi. It was really and truly awful. Maybe it was a bad night, but honestly, I've never had such awful sushi. The tuna was off and the rice was...I don't know, rancid? I would avoid this place. I'm sorry to say this, because I really, really wanted them to be amazing, but they aren't.

This little gem is fantastic. Great food, generous portions, and if you spend $20, they throw in extras! The owners and staff are really nice. We've had several different sushi, curry, "4 friends", all excellent and enough for leftovers! Highly recommend! Oh, and great prices!

We usually eat at Mio sushi which is awesome but this place is super close to our house. I was hesitant as well because this place is located in a weird location. I have to say the Tuna Roll and Tuna Nigiri are delicious! The helpings are double than Mio. It could be kept at room temp just for a bit because colder does not taste better. We have tried chicken pad thai once but will stick with thai ginger for that. This is our 3rd time and will come back!

Quality ingredients, hand made dumplings, delicious flavor combinations, reasonable prices. Very happy customer here. It is a small place, 4 tables. But if you are looking for authentic sushi, come here. I recommend doing a carry out order versus dine in with a group larger than 5.

I love this place. Sometimes the quaint out-of-the-way joints surprise you, and this one is great when in the mood for Thai, and, he does a nice sushi roll. One night the nice chef threw in a sushi roll for free, very cool!

Husband and I were visiting relatives in Portland and stopped here as I was craving Sushi and he was craving Thai. I got Spring Rolls (deep fried-I would have considered it a egg roll. I was expecting cold spring rolls with prawns) and Pad Thai and he got Pad Thai and Gyoza. We got a free cucumber roll which I wasn't super impressed with. The Paid Thai was more watery but sweeter than I am used to and I liked it a lot but the chicken tasted kinda weird. Overall I would go back. The Pad Thai was good. I like the chunks of egg in it.

Stopped by to look at the menu and ended up ordering the vegetable fried rice to go to check it out. Not sure about the rest of the menu but the fried rice is really, really good. A nice combination of flavors and almost sweet at times. Rare that such a simple dish can actually stand out this much. I will be going back - really glad a small hole in the wall is located so close.

This is a great place to eat. Wasn't sure at first about it just driving by but it is good food. And the waiter is very friendly and helpful. He was laughing and teaching the table next to me some native words of his. Although there is not allot of seating inside, there is some outside for nice days, but they have takeout and delivery.

I may be a little generous with that fourth star, but their Pad Thai earned it for them. Overall, this place is good. The exterior is unique, with a closed in patio and external picnic tables under a beautiful shade tree. The Pad Thai was amazing. The sushi was pretty good, but our rainbow roll had imitation crab, which was a real bummer. The spring rolls were not very good. The service was great, and we will definitely be back.

More like a 3.5 but rounding up is nice. This place is off the beaten path and a real live hole-in-the-wall. Thai ladies are running the shop and making food with love. I appreciated the fact that the tofu pad thai had heaping chunks of zucchini and carrots in it, however it was a little light on flavor, though, the citrus notes were strong. The pad se ewe came packed with veggies and chicken (for my husb), it was pretty spot on, but if you like it hot, you've got to tell them. The salad rolls were delicious and burrito sized (note, made with imitation crab) - with a lovely, sweet-savory peanut sauce. My only regret is the mixed order of sushi, one of which was imitation crab, the rest extremely thin slices of lackluster fish. I'd come back again for the noodle dishes and veggie roll.

Good sushi to take out and fairly cheap. We had California roll, and spicy tuna which were pretty good, not so impressed with their tempura shrimp. Wish they were colder-that's why I give 3 stars- but I liked it overall.

First off, don't let the exterior chase you off. For that matter, don't let the interior either. It is super tiny with indoor seating for about 10 and a picnic table outdoor. We ordered the chicken with green curry sauce and pork pad thai with a side of soft shell crab sushi. The curry was absolutely delicious with a great blend of flavors and the pad thai was served with the perfect consistency noodles, not at all mushy or overly sticky. I give it 4 stars because the sushi did fall apart although it still tasted good. With a $20 order, you get a free order of cucumber sushi. We will definitely be back during our next Portland visit.

2.5 Stars. From the reviews was hoping for better. The salad rolls were certainly not "burrito" sized...just normal. Basic flavor. The fried spring rolls, I'm not sure if they're made there, seemed like they might have been distributed commercially. Again, just typical fried spring rolls that any Asian place serves. The Pad Thai was actually quite bland. Had a fourth dish...forget what it was...but flavor-wise, it too was forgettable. So a completely unremarkable dinner. I've had better at The Decoy in Linnton and the Thai place in the food cart place a half mile east on Lombard. Really too bad as I drive by this location numerous times each week and was hoping it'd be my new go-to for take-out. Unfortunately, not.

Nice people, poor sushi. Second time I've been here and been disappointed by sushi quality for the price. This restaurant is the only sushi option I've found in St. John's, though, so if you're in a sushi pinch, Thai (&) Sushi will work.

I'll admit it - I was afraid to eat at a restaurant specializing in both sushi and Thai. Usually I go for a one or the other but not both in the same place. I was wrong though. They did a great job with both. My benchmark meal of all Thai restaurants is the yellow curry - if they can't get that right, I don't go back. Thai Sushi did a superb job with it - not too sweet or heavy or thin but just right! Our friend who dragged us there raves about the Ginger and Basil meat-based dishes served with rice. The tempura was a bit greasy for my taste and skippable. We were surprised by how good the cucumber roll was - free with a $20 purchase - it was a nice bonus. Don't be turned off by the restaurant's exterior or limited seating - great for takeout or dining in - you should definitely try this reasonably priced St. John's offering.

I was really hoping this place was going to defy expectations. Could St. John's really be home to a decent sushi restaurant? Not yet, at least not based on what we ate tonight. The interior was not clean and I could see the sink dripping into a dirty bucket on the floor...gross. The food wasn't gross, it just wasn't good. The tempura was soggy but still tasty, and the fish in the sushi wasn't bad, it just wasn't that good, or cold enough. The rolls fell apart when I tried to use chopsticks - we ended up just picking out pieces of the "good stuff" inside the giant rolls. Everything about the sushi was just too big - the fish slices, the rice, the overall size. I would give this place another try in a pinch, but for the Thai food only.

We love Thai sushi! The service is really friendly and sweet. The food is great, and we love that it is only a walk away. Quick for take out, and extremely affordable make it even better.

We had driven by this place numerous times on the way to the airport from Skyline, wondering if it would survive. Finally ate there last night. I just love tiny places like this! The salad rolls were HUGE, fresh and delicious. Pad Thai cooked perfectly. And they threw in a plate of free cucumber rolls since our meal was over $20. Our server was sweet, fast and attentive. Although the room could have been a little warmer, I appreciate them conserving energy. We will definitely eat here again.

This is a great restaurant for lunch or dinner. Even though the restaurant is in a neighborhood and doesn't look that fancy, the customer service is excellent and the food is really delicious!! I have experience reformatting and designing menus for restaurants. When I saw the menu, I was in disbelief on how poorly the menu is designed. The menu looked very plain and I know I could advertise this menu better than them. But I give them credit when its due for at least having their business open in this poor economy.

You would never even guess on your way to Thai Sushi that a restaurant is just around the corner. But if you eat here once you will surely get to know your way around the neighborhood in no time. They serve Thai and sushi and do both beautifully. The rainbow roll, and really everything I've had here, are divine and made with what tastes like quality ingredients. Absolutely worth the trip.

A little background for y'all, I drive by this place every day and I was worried, I ain't gonna lie. The building is run down and you can tell it's a struggling business. It has been open and closed three times in the three years I've lived here in St. John's. I don't know if this is the same business owner or not. Anyways, they have been struggling. Well, I tried them out this last week and I've been back, TWICE. They are soooo good. My sister's favorite is the JB Tempura Roll (it is delicious) and my favorite is the Salmon Lover Roll - so much salmon, so good. YUM! I possibly could have given them four stars because the wait can be a minute (and by minute I mean 40 minutes; we were behind two other large orders). So, if you are in a hurry, I guess you can go somewhere else (but where can you get wonderfully made sushi here in St. John's?). Take your time and enjoy going out to dinner. The inside is super tiny with four small tables. Or call ahead, order and come and pick up. The photo shows how finally packed our containers were. They included wasabi, ginger and soysauce packets in our bag. Ya gotta try the sushi. It is delish! (Side note: we haven't tried anything else on the menu. Just sushi. YUM.)

Ok so we went in on a Sunday, their hours stated they were open from 12-9 and we got there at around 1:30 - the open sign was up and the door was unlocked. Upon entering and sitting down, they told us that today was our lucky day and that they were ACTUALLY CLOSED because they were having a party soon but we were welcome to sit in and eat. We ordered a soup and a couple plates of sushi - the soup was absolutely delicious but the sushi was terrible. Too big, the fish wasn't cold enough and didn't have good color and it was generally tasteless. I would be tempted to go back for soup only but never ever again for sushi.

Special drive to get here only to find them closed! It's 1:30, on a Friday. Disappointed!

My kids surprised me for Mother's Day by taking me here. I can honestly say at first, I was very afraid that this was a very bad idea just by the outside. But I am so eternally thankful for the other reviews that said don't let the outside fool you. Moving on to the food... The best! We had Vegetable Pad Thai and Chicken Pad See Ew that was flavorful and filling. The Beef Massaman was rich and delicious. My Chicken Teriyaki was the best I have ever had. Slightly spicy, deep flavors, moist chicken, crispy veggies. We had squid rings and spring rolls for appetizers and those big were huge hits too! The gal even gave us a surprise dessert for Mom's Day. Not sure what it was called but it was like a doughnut in wedges with chocolate, powdered sugar frosting and strawberry syrups drizzled on top. Absolutely beautiful and amazing! We are definitely huge fans and now life long customers of this hidden gem! Give it try! You won't be disappointed.

Really enjoyed the special. Garlic sauce pork ribs served on fresh greens, and sweet thai chili sauce. Had dumplings that were quick and hot...wifey had the salmon lovers roll which was nice and hearty If you spend over a certain amount the even give you free cucumber roll. They have decent Thai selection as well Would defiantly go again.

Our Laotian neighbor recommended Thai Sushi to us, and I'm SO glad he did. A thai family owns/runs this place = food is authentic and unbelievably delicious. I grew up in SE Asia, and this is the best. Its worth driving to, and if you're in St John's, and love authentic ethnic food, it'd be criminal not to go. Unbelievably friendly/kind thai personalities? Check. Will cook with thai chilis (not jalapenos!) on request? Check. Family eats fish head soup together in corner? Check. Outdoor seating with a nice atmosphere? Check. While the menu is the usual items (red curry, basil stir fry, etc), don't expect it to taste exactly like Americanized thai food, but if you have an open pallette, and you like fish sauce, this will make your day! My only complaint is I see the family eating lots of things not on the menu (the things NOT on usual american-thai menus).... I wish these less common dishes would show up on the menu too!

Sub par place, I had the curry fried rice with chicken, which made it obvious that they were using old rice, oddly it also lacked flavor, and had no spice at all. I also had the JB roll which is just a big philly roll, the fish inside wasn't too fresh as you could smell and taste that it was a few days old. I'm usually wary of sushi places that don't prepare it in front of you, and rightfully so.

    (3)
  • Laura S.

Salmon in the fried JB roll was not great quality. Pad Thai was okay, but not worth going back for. Was hoping this would be a local spot for sushi or Thai food but it turned out to be neither.

Thai Sushi may be a misleading name: there is Thai food (curries, pad thai, fried rice, soups, satay, spring rolls etc), Japanese street food (yakisoba, udon, tempura, gyoza) in addition to Sushi and Sashimi. The vegetables are fresh, the meats are perfectly cooked. Sushi is fresh (I love Unagi!!!) Atmosphere? Tons. I absolutely adore the low-set, cinder block building. Is it adorned with Japanese or Thai decor? No. It's absolutely unassuming. Prices are competitive with St Johns main strip on Lombard. Staff are friendly and helpful. Please, give it a try, these folks deserve your patronage.

I was really excited on eating here with my girlfriend because we read good reviews and then we were really disappointed. The rice way so over cooked and soggy, I didn't know it was possible to mess up rice that bad, and the dragon rolls were incredibly gross the shrimp was really soggy as well. My girlfriend ordered the pad thai noodles with tofu and it was pretty good, I also ordered the guioza dumplings and they were good too so the place gets 2 stars. Maybe we just went there on a bad day, but either way we were very disappointed.

Fantastic sushi addition to St. John's. I haven't tried the Thai yet, but I'm guessing it's even better. I'm a sushi snob a little bit, and I can't recommend that you drive across Portland for it, but am I super stoked to have this place down the street? H E double hockey sticks yes. Faves included spicy scallops that could compete with any I've ever had, and tempura cheesecake.

A tiny spot serving up the freshest tasting spring rolls and yummy ginger sauced dishes. It's one of my top five - taking the number one slot.

This place is great! A lot of Thai places confuse flavor with spice, but the dishes we had here were just the right combination of subtle flavors that made it delicious and not overpowering in spiciness. We haven't had any sushi yet, but the rolls we saw next to us looked very good, as well. The indoors eating area is quite small, but they do have take out available. If you can eat there, do, because the service is great and very friendly.

Wow! Tonight we ate at Thai Sushi for the second time ever. We had some coconut milk soup with mushrooms and shrimp that had an excellent flavor as well as a few rolls and pieces. There was hamachi, eel, salmon, tuna, and yellowtail - all the fish was fresh and delicious. The server was super down to earth and friendly. I honestly can't wait to eat there again!

fantastic food in this tiny gem in north portland. Had two curries...lots of flavor in both. Sushi was delicious, service friendly. everything was excellent including the prices! Support this spot!

My husband and I went here last night. This place is small but great! We had a little of everything. The coconut soup was to die for. We asked for the curry to be spicy and it was perfect! The sushi was yummy. Everything came out in a timely manor. It couldn't have been more perfect! I am a very picky eater so when I say yum I mean it!

Good curry if you like mild, but ordered a 4/5 on spice (I like my curry super spicy) and tasted no fire whatsoever....might try their sushi, but will go to other restaurants to get Thai food.
