This place was recommended to me when I moved to St. Johns. In fact, it was highly recommended. Since I'm not a huge pizza guy it's easy for me to not like a pizza place. Maybe too east. I think it is in part due to my not liking greasy/oily foods (every Thai review I mention something about oil) and pizza is usually somewhat greasy/oily. First of all the prices weren't too bad for the pizza ($16.50 for a large) and between the girlfriend and I we had 3 leftover pieces. It's not a HUGE large pizza so three people is probably the perfect amount to eat one. They also have beer on tap and the seating was ample since the weather was nice. The vibe of the place is very laid back and it is a cool setup with the old service station. Now to the food! We had the Willamette Pizza and the other people with us had a St. John's and a Cesar Sala. The salad was large and we actually all split it up. The crust on the pizza is thin which I prefer and it had just the right amount of crisp to it. The pizza was kind of oily but not terrible. The toppings were fresh there were a lot of them on the Za! They had this hot sauce to put on there and it was delicious. I'd highly recommend trying it! I'm a fan of the pizza. I was told it was the Greatest Pizza of all time by someone, which I can't agree with that statement. However it is pretty darn good and I will most certainly be back to try some more slices!

3.5 stars. Not the best pizza in St Johns, just average. I got to try the pepperoni (decent) and the "Saint Johns" (also decent). Prices were fair and staff was friendly, but the place was a little cramped, trying to fit in an old gas station. The crust/dough seemed low quality, even store bought, which hurt the pizza. The cheese and tomato sauce also seemed poor quality. It was a very average tasting pizza, with way better options elsewhere. Pizza was a B-/C+

Signal Station is a little underwhelming among similar establishments in Portland. Although the Gas Station exterior is way cool, the rest of the experience fails to meet expectations. The inside feels disorganized which makes it feel unclean. The decor is cluttered and disjointed. The service is rather lacking in enthusiasm and borders on rude. The Pepperoni Pizza I ordered was bland and cold. The sauce was weak and lacked any distinguishing characteristics or flavor. The pepperoni and cheese were greasy and generic. The whole experience left me rather cold. I was disappointed since this seems to be a landmark of sorts in St. John's. I would recommend taking the extra step to go to Sizzle Pie if you really want a unique Portland Pizza Experience.

Decent local place. Kids like it and they have ice cream. Nice outdoor seating. Too bad about all the cigaret buts around the place. Yuck

Not too impressed. Thin greasy cheese pizza did the job but wouldn't be something I crave go get again. Workers seemed super nice however but noticed there hair wasn't even tied up etc while they made pizza

Consistently really good. When I lived in St. John's, I was here about once a week. I always found it to be quick, the service to be excellent and the pizza very good. You wouldn't see many businesses explain why they raise prices but these guys did on a sign. And of course the place is extremely charming, in the old service station. A St. John's gem.

I thought this place was great! We looked over the menu and decided it was all good so we went for it. My boyfriend got a hot sub which was so tasty and full of chicken, bacon, pesto and cheese. Seriously perfect sandwich. I got the personal #1 Signal Station Special that had goat cheese, olives, sun dried tomatoes, and walnuts and wow, it was packed full of flavor. The personal is more than enough for one very, very hungry person or two people of medium to medium-high hunger levels.

Best pizza in town. Unique toppings and quick service. It's a little pricey, but I guess you have to pay for quality!

We've ordered 4 different kinds of pizzas to-go and they've all been good. Not stand-out amazing but super consistent and in my opinion, the best of the options in St. John's. Prompt and yummy. Will order again and again and probably again since we eat pizza like.. a lot.

I stopped to get a couple of gift certificates for an event. I was helped immediately by a friendly young woman. She apologized that she had no fancy envelopes for the gift certificates, but I said that would give me something to do at home by putting stickers and stuff on envelopes to house the gift certificates. Whilst I waited, I was nose to nose with slices. The price was right and the pizza looked terrific. My slice had pepperoni (great big old rounds of pepperoni and no stinting on them), beautiful ripe tomatoes, and sweet crunchy slices of red pepper. The crust was nice and thin and there was plenty of tomato sauce under the goodies. This made me happy because any more it seems like pizza never has enough sauce, just a mere scraping, and I love plenty of sauce. I took my slice outside and sat in the sun, ate my pizza, and drank my kombucha purchased elsewhere. Now, of course, I'm sleepy from the pizza and sun, but what a lovely day to have been able to do this. Signal Station does serve sandwiches and salads and lots of different "flavors" of pizza. All this is motivation to come back and enjoy other offerings. PS: I totally forgot to say how much I love the physical setting of Signal Station Pizza. It's in what was an old gas station all gussied up for modern times for restaurant use. The whole decor is geared towards nostalgia for the old filling stations and is lovingly decorated with vintage (vintage-style) decor from the classic era in the 1940s and 1950s. It's a real attention-getter as you drive through St. Johns and definitely helps to make you want to stop here. It is very clean. I can see how cozy it would be on a rainy day.

Cool vibe with the 50's gas station thing going on. Great location. We just moved into town and they were kind enough to mail us a coupon for a free large cheese pizza. We live within easy walking distance so we checked it out. Staff was super nice and everything seemed pretty good. I really wish the pizza had been great, because it would have been an all around nice experience. Sadly, it was mediocre at best. The crust was good, the sauce was very bland, and it was so greasy it took two napkins per slice to blot it all up. Not the worst pizza I've ever had, but really, can pizza truly be bad? I'll try their calzones next time.

OK this pizza is the bomb. Even if i didn't live in St. Johns I would come over to get it. You should too!

Called asking if there was air conditioned indoor seating and I was told I was soliciting him and he didn't have time for that and he hung up on me

We've Lived up here for 2 years now, but just recently decided to give Signal Station a shot. Maybe we made the mistake of not eating it there because by the time we got it home, which was about 10 minutes, it was barely warm. We ordered the St. John's combo - and while it was okay, it wasn't amazing. Dough has no flavor whatsoever and the toppings on the combo were fairly light. Service is what you'd expect: hipsters that barely know how to speak and act annoyed to be serving you. We'll give it another shot only because our options in St. John's are terribly limited right now, but they better step up their game soon if they want to stay in competition with all the new renovations in town that are starting to happen.

I went back and requested a refund for the salad I tossed. They were very polite and gave me my money back. Thank you.

The pizza was average nothing special. They have a full bar with lots of outside seating. The only reason why I didn't give this a five is that this place is pricey for what you get.

  • Christine O.

We just moved up here and I was craving pizza on Friday and ordered one. It was great. So much so, I ordered another on Tuesday. I don't usually eat that much pizza, but was craving it. Pretty darn good. Got to-go both times. Would give it 4 stars, but its a little cluttered inside and probably wouldn't eat there unless I was outside. If I went in the inside before I ever ordered, I probably would have left. BUT... ordered and had GREAT pizza. Look past the clutter :)

We stopped here because the two teenagers like cheese pizza. Yep just cheese! So by the slice works great for us. Not out of this world but I don't expect much from 1 slice of pepperoni pizza. The setting was really cool and memorable for our trip to Portland. The service was good for what appeared to be a one man operation.

  • Nicolette W.

We ordered a bbq chicken pizza (it's our favorite, we try it everywhere!) to be picked up and when we got it, it was cold and the chicken was super dry. Wouldn't eat here again. It wasn't the worst... But it wasn't worth our money at all. Go around the corner to the food cart Pizza Contadino, you'll thank me.

Great pizza .... i love their crust and sauce very good thin crust style pizza ... great service and menu ... cool building too

  • Summer L.

The pizza is good, I'll give them that. I can't even fault them on not delivering because no one in Portland delivers. I just don't understand how they get off charging over $3 for a slice of pizza in Portland (and St. John's of all places). Come on.

The cheese pizza never disappoints. (I think I spelled that wrong)

Best gluten free crust of anywhere!!! Love having awesome gluten free options in our neighborhood!! Great place for a sunny night with pizza and drinks outside!

Convenient pizza place in St. John's. I stopped in here on a whim one day and got two slices of pepperioni for about $3.50 each. The quality of the pizza was only so-so and given the quality and the size of the slices, I concluded that the pizza was a little on the pricey side. There were few places to sit inside, but given the proximity of the ovens, it was too hot to sit inside, so I opted to sit outside on one of their many benches. It's cool that they converted an old gas station into a pizza place, but the pizza just isn't good enough to warrant me coming back. As a matter of fact, given how cool the location is, If they were to really increase the quality of the pizza I could see this place taking off. As it stands now, it's just another over-priced, mediocre pizza place.

Great place to order ahead and get something to go. The small interior isn't conducive to eating there. The outstanding Mediterranean Salad, and decent quality slices keep me coming back for to-go orders.

Hands down the best pizza I have ever eaten! The employees are very friendly and the service is great.

  • S. G.

WOW..........wow. So delicious....we shared a large between us, and neither of us felt stuffed. I have to say this was the best pizza we had since moving to Portland. That includes Portabello Trattoria. We got the Edgewater with no cheese. We took it home and added our own vegan cheese. It was so amazing. We will frequent this place, for sure!!!! New favorite!!!!

  • Rachelle f.

I used to love this place but it has gone downhill a little bit, not as many toppings as previous ones I've had and the pizza itself didn't seem cooked enough. I'll give this place another try, maybe having an off day.

    (2)
  • Natalie B.

Two stars: mainly because of the crust tasting like a piece of cardboard and because of a particular employee. The past few times I've been here, I've noticed she is in SUCH a hurry to get back to her smart phone or her conversation with other employees, or god forbid, make a pizza, that she can't even put your change in your hand or make eye contact to say thank you. Yep. She just quickly dumps your change on the counter and scurries away. I've given it a few chances recently and it has been the same experience each time, so I know it's not just because she's weeded or having an off day. She's just rude. Today really took the cake though while I got to stand and listen to her conversation about how she caught something from someone and is going to zoom care tonight to get it looked at. Yeah I shoulda left then. Won't be back. It'd be one thing if the food was amazing but unfortunately it's just not anymore. Too bad.

  • Brian D.

This place was great but not anymore. The toppings used to be plentiful and delicious, now they are cheap and sparsely applied . Sorry to say it but Papa Murphy's has got you beat......and for half the freaking price. I have to ask you Signal Station owner, do you think we don't notice when you sacrifice your quality? Get a clue please!!!! I deleted the bookmark for your website from my browser and also your phone number from my phone.

Food is ok but the service was horrible! Called in an order for lunch and the woman was so rude. She made it seem like we were inconveniencing her by ordering food from them. This will be the last time we order from here. That is not the type of service one would expect in a friendly neighborhood like St. John's.

Sometimes wierdness but occasionly a great slice. Occasionally, but hey I guess I dont get the mvp treatment cause im not a Johner? Or...its probably St.Johns best it is actually lol!. Except for that teriyako joint close to pier park. In actuality I know the owner really cares and uses local ingredients but I haven't aways got the fresh slice im just never at ease there.

  • Oscar M.

Had it great had it bad. Just got a bad one. Dough was lacking that tad bit of semi crisp that we all so love and the Red sauce was bland. I do appreciate the fact that they try to support Local and Organic products. The sausage flavoring is amazing but the size of them basically limits you to one per slice. A couple years ago this was the best in St Johns now I can say that No pizza in St. Johns is good.... Damn.

This is a review by a vegetarian. This place looks great. The pizza looks great. The pizza is *not* great. Conveyor ovens with screens have a 3-star max so it's not surprising when they don't "wow". It's $2.95 for a slice that is 1/6 of a 16" pizza. It's not awful; I mean it takes away the pizza craving but that's as far as I'm willing to compliment it.

Yum! Good pizza and cool architecture makes for a fun funky and cheap meal. Check out kalieghs artwork in the restroom.

  • Jacob S.

It's good pizza! They also have a great Italian sandwich, and beer on tap as well. The owner and the workers here are also really nice, which gives the place a friendly atmosphere. It is cramped inside when they close the garage door, but pizza is almost meant to be eaten on the go!

I love this place. And I planned to take a picture of the pizza I got tonite but was too excited to eat it ...so maybe next time. Anyways, we've gone here a handful of times. We live in N Pdx but real close to I5 so driving down to Signal Station takes close to 10 mins...but it's worth it and surprisingly the pizza makes the trip back fine but I wouldn't go any longer than that. It's a thin crust but I've never had it be soggy like other reviews say. We always get the make your own and get pepperoni, an assortment of vegetables and tonite we got goat cheese. God it was good. The pepperoni was all crispy around the edges, (I love that) and the veges too. It was just the right amount of goat cheese and the rest of the cheese was not too oily either like others have also commented. I've never run into those issues and will continue to go to Signal Station.

For some reason I felt nostalgic on my visit with the family here. Maybe it reminded me of when I was a kid. Greasy (in a good way) thin crust cheese pizza might be a kids favorite meal, right? Totally. Now, I make pizza at home a lot. The homemade kind. The kind with "weird" (according to my kids) ingredients like goat cheese and chopped tomatoes and garlic. So when my kids go to a pizza place, they ONLY want cheese pizza. Needless to say, they liked the pizza at Signal Station better than my homemade version. "Mommy, you should make it like this at home!", they said. Aw. They're so cute. So, we get our pizza. The server places it on those metal pizza holder things in the middle of our table. You know... the ones that keep it up off the table so it can be "out of the way"? Well, it wasn't so "out of the way" apparently because when my 6 year old started shaking the parmesan cheese on his pizza slice, his hand hits the side of the pizza pan and the WHOLE pie goes sliding off onto the pavement. Oh crap. This is so typical. I just shrug and say, "oh well... at least we all got a slice!". BUT (and here's the awesome part), the server sees what happened, comes over and says she has another cheese pizza in the oven right now and that she'll bring it on over to replace the one on the ground! She totally didn't have to do this! But she did. She even put it in a box and placed it safely on the table next to us so that didn't happen again. This impressed me so much! I mean, if you drop your dinner on the floor, tough luck, right? Nope. Not at Signal Station. So what did I think of the pizza? I was surprised by how crispy the crust was, how tasty the sauce was and how gooey the cheese was. This pizza was exactly like it was supposed to be. It was a gorgeous spring day so we sat in the sun outside. They do have a small inside eating area for those rainy days, too. I will gladly come back here to try more than just a cheese pizza pie. There are so many other toppings that looked delicious. Plus the customer service goes above and beyond the call of duty. Signal Station Pizza has earned a repeat customer in me!

From the unigue and nostalgic building with the bright lights and neon sign, to the large floppy slices what's not to love? As for the whiners who fail to understand that the slice is so large and heavy in relation to the thiness of the crust you need to hold it with 2 hands or fold it lenghtwise. While not having ordered a whole pie yet I've tried about 7 different slices and so far I've loved the flavors and textures. The veggies have been fresh and tasty, the sausage a nice little bite to it. The sauce has been not overwhelming which is a good thing and so far always a nice balance of cheese. So many veggie choices, with so many non traditional toppings, and so little time. And though they won't make it my absolute favorite pizza, I'm looking forward to when I can finally order my first whole pie from them

For all the "best of" and "best pizza" lists I've read for Portland pizzerias, I can't believe I've not seen this one on any of them. Their pizza was delicious. I suggest the Chicago. The crust was nice and chewy and charred just enough and their meatballs were outstanding. The pepperoni pie my brother ordered was on the greasy side but looked perfect after a few dabs with a paper towel. The space is nice during the summer...plenty of outdoor seating. Next time I'm in the area and get a hankering for a slice, this will be tops on my list.

Unique place with creative pies. This is a small neighborhood joint with pies named for the community landmarks, rivers etc. You can get pizza by the slice or y the pie. For having only one refrigerated cooler they have a surprisingly strong array of drinks along with few beers and a cooler of Blue Bunny ice cream to finish. A strong point to this place is that they have pizza, salad and sandwiches; unlike many places, Signal has more than one delicious vegetarian option whereas so many places has just one. The only thing holding back a 4-star rating is that there seems to be one consistent and unfortunate drawback to this place. While getting pizza by the slice has always been a positive and pleasant experience, getting a whole pie has not been as much so. While the ingredients are the same, the problem is with the crust...the bottom of the crust to be precise. On a consistent basis it has much too much raw flour on the bottom and it overpowers and ruins the taste of the pizza. Because of this problem, my husband and I limit our patronage to just getting a slice which means we are limited to the types of pies they have made that day rather than their whole creative and interesting menu. If it wasn't for the flour issue we'd purchase their pies more frequently.

This place is awesome! I have been coming here for years and it keeps getting better... Great pizza and salads and a great value. The owners are community involved which is good to see. Cute, local and very tasty. Addressing "Brian D"..... He must have made a mistake, bumped his head or is just a misanthrope (look it up Brian) but my friends and I always frequent this place and totally disagree with his post. Hope he enjoys his half-empty glass of flat soda. ;)

Part of my review is an extra star for a free pizza coupon. New to the area and they gave me a free pizza coupon. Excellent! But that said, it was a damn good pizza and I have been back since then. Great pizza, have their own style and the decor is pretty cool. I love it. Great service! The only negative are that many of the pizzas on their menu just don't appeal to me as I am not a fan of some of the ingredients, but that said obviously you can order it without them. Kind of like when you walk into a coffee shop and they have a whole wall sized menu board and they ask "May I take your order?" and you reply with "Er, yeah. I just wanted a coffee..." I think they might have gone overboard with trying to build their own 'brand,' but I am also a middle aged fart who is resistant to change.

We eat here at least twice a month. I really wish they delivered since very few places do up in NOPO. But, we love the bbq chix pizza, the "Portland" and we recently had a good one with sun dried tomato, walnuts......i think it was the "signal special" and it was first on the list. Crust is awesome and they are fast and friendly and prices are fair. nom nom.

While on a recent jaunt to the St. John's Library, I saw that the Pizza Contandino cart was conspicuously AWOL--- I hope they're just getting it serviced or refurbished, and that they'll be coming back! Anyways. That meant there was no longer any excuse not to walk a block up and across Lombard, and finally give the Signal Station a try. [Note: after reviewing Contandino's blog, they are apparently moving over to the lot alongside the Fixin' To, just behind McMenamin's...] B/c I'm a crusty old fart, I can remember when the Signal Station actually was a quaint little fully operational gas station. Since then, it's spent large chunks of the last several decades being empty, or one failed, cutesy-type botique after another. The pie here was good, and their menu has strength and depth. So far, i've tried the #11 Cathedral ( veggie w/ garlic and olive oil glaze, along w/ mozzarella & provolone, spinach, capers, roma tomatoes, kalamata olives, & feta), their pepperoni, and the #1 Signal Station special (again, the white/olive oil 'n garlic sauce, topped with - mozzarella & provolone, red onions, black olives, walnuts, sun-dried tomatoes, & goat cheese). Superb. They offer only one crust (thin), which is fine, although if you do carry out these things get soggy fast w/all the oily sauce... Can't wait to get back there again, to try the anchovie pie, as well as the #16 and 17, which both have smoked salmon. Do you s'pose it would be considered "bad form" to smuggle this pizza into either movie theater there in St. John's--- each offering of course their own very special and interesting interpretations of pizza pie....

The best Pizza in St. Johns, period! My husband likes thick crust, I like thin, and we BOTH love this stuff. It's very, very good. No delivery, you must drive and pick it up. Pizza by the slice is also offered. Interestingly, they also have ice cream.

I make my own pizza at home and at the risk of dislocating my shoulder I pat myself on the back because it is damn good! Hence, finding good pizza is a little bit of a problem for me since hardly anything compares to homemade. Occasionally you get lucky and find a place. This is a great place. Post Yelp Elite Event at Salty's on Marine Drive the Wife and I felt the need for a bite to eat since the people who helicoptered the food tables got all the good stuff before those of who were enjoying the view. But I digress... The Wife used to live in St Johns, we moved in together there, got engaged and married while we lived there and always appreciated and loved our St Johns neighborhood. We cruised the whole area deciding on a place to eat and didn't really feel motivated to hit the St Johns Pub. Suddenly a neon glow acted like a beacon from around the corner. "Wasn't that a flower shop", I asked, "No, that went out of business, then it became a smoke shop, but look it has tables." A sign stated "Pizza By The Slice", and that sounded like the ticket. We parked. As we walked in the front entrance we noticed a Yelp sticker on the window. I love irony. We approached the front and the two guys behind the counter were busy with whatever it is guys do behind a counter, they gave us some space while we looked over what we wanted, which was nice. As we placed our order for a cheese and a pepperoni slice with some soda just the smells of the place were making me even hungrier. Only complaint is my usual one, these guys went to a lot of trouble making a cool, hip spot with canned soda in a cooler instead of the old eight spout vender, and still they had only two diet options, Coke and Pepsi. If you are trying to be hip and trendy try mixed it up with the low cal options! Diet Dr Pepper, Diet Mountain Dew, Diet Root Beer... go nuts! Two huge slices of pizza came up from behind the counter. We took seats outside the roll up doors and enjoyed the night air. The first bite told me everything about this pizza. Scratch crust, good quality cheese and a kick ass sauce that tasted of olive oil and oregano, the way it should be. It capped off a perfect night, and make no mistake about, we will be back... often.

The Pizza was real good and the salad was tasty... The beer while waiting for the my pizza was very good too. The biggest problem was that I took the pizza to go and it was cold when I got home. I stuck in in the oven and a few minutes later I had double baked pizza. Well, at least it warmed things up a bit. Its all good. Of course this place is unique with the 50's decor. A very nice conversion.

Used to totally dig this place, but the quality of the pizza has suffered lately. Been disappointed a few times over the last six months, then last night wife orders the bridge (hawaiian). "Fresh" pineapple obviously canned. And we had a laugh and literally counted the pieces of pineapple on the pizza. There were sixteen tiny chunks of canned pineapple on a large pizza that costs almost twenty bucks. And go hit up Gartners Meat Market for the "fresh" canadian bacon. That stuff looks like you grabbed it at Freddys on your way to work...Man, Dominos is more liberal with their toppings than that for 6.99. Im over it.

I struggle with Signal Station, and I struggle with it because of its consistency. Sometimes, they make the tastiest pizzas in Portland. Other times, the pie I take home is a cheesy grease bomb and heart-burn inducer. Quality at Signal seems to go in seasons--this spring was a particularly good season, but the pie I picked up last night was so laden with grease it oozed from the cheese and gathered in thick orange and red pools that my toppings floated it. I'm awarding Signal 3 stars as an average---when they're on, they're easily a four-star place. When they're off, a two-star rating is generous. Signal serves artisan pizza (whole and by the slice, carry out or dine in) and salads, an assortment of sodas and beers (including a couple on tap), and Blue Bunny ice cream. It's a great summer place as there's ample outdoor seating and the "garage" atmosphere is pretty cool. Prices are reasonable--in the neighborhood of $17 for a whole pie, $3 and up for beers, and so forth. It's worth a shot.

To me, Signal Station pizza pie is about as good as it gets. Weather im wanting just a slice, a whole pie or even the best calazone I have found in Portland I know just where to go. This pizza reminds me of being back home and getting thoes great size slices that you HAVE to fold up!!! You can tell they use fresh toppings and they never skimp. I love that they give you the option of turning any pizza into a calazone. The place is an actual old school defuncted gas station. So if your looking for great pizza you must try Signal Station in St Johns.

  • Michael F.

Way out here in St Johns it is nice to find a great pizza place that is inventive with the toppings and the taste always hits the mark. Slices are moderately priced around $3 and whole pies will set you back near $20.

You can use Hot Lips to kiss my ass because this place takes the pie. Yes, its my neighborhood pizzeria so Im a little biased, but I am a freedom loving American and biased is what you're going to get! The pizza is great and prices are reasonable too. They also have a happy hour with lowered beer prices and occasionally you can get two-for-one slices when they are clearing out the trays before closing. If you go there twice and both times you get the mud butt, maybe you are lactose intolerant or you have a weak ass stomach and should be on a special diet. Dont punish this fine establishment because you are inferior. This is a solid four star joint, very close to a five.

I cannot complain about the delicious pizza made with fresh ingredients and dough that Signal Station creates. My husband and I moved to NoPo about a month ago and drove past their location while house searching. We agreed we must try them once we settled in! The atmosphere is comfortable, like having dinner at home and I bet you will see your neighbors there. I can imagine the outdoor seating area being packed once Summer finally arrives. Not to mention you can order a beer or a glass of wine. I like the thin crust they make and the variety of pies is amazing. The best part is that they are only a 5 minute walk from our place. Goodbye to commercial pizza places for us! Calling ahead and walking over will be faster than waiting for delivery!

Ok so here is the complete dealy-o. When I first moved to St. Johns, I went here it was the summer and I bought a slice solid 5 star experience. I wrote such a review, after 3 visits back, I deleted it completely. Super stoked to go back, I buy the whole pie...EEEEEK hello toilet meet my hindquarters and make yourself comfortable. This pie was soooo greasy. The cheese slid off of the crust and formed a puddle of muck on my plate. Maybe it was the night, maybe the staff working there. Free coupon in the mail welcoming me to the 'hood. After a month of it being magnatized to the fridge I finally indulge in what I hope would be the great redeemer in the pizza spot so close I can smell. Fool me twice and reunite me with the can. I didn't leave for a day solid. I really wanted to like you signal, I really gave you more of a chance than most other places. And honestly your sandwhiches "may" be in my future. The beer and people working there is what earned you 2 stars and me typing this. Your pizza however owes ME the other three.

After recently moving to St Johns, I've been eagerly looking for those tiny tucked away gems that would become my mainstays. To be direct, there aren't a lot of options for anything out here, and the absence of a reliable pizzeria may be the most glaring. Signal Station stands out, being a quirky gas station renovated with a friendly (if slightly crammed) interior that retains the gas pumps outside. It really looks like a perfect find for a drop-in slice, and upon first impression you're likely to get that "Ah-ha!" vibe that will convince you prematurely that you'll be back again and again. Sadly, the food doesn't hold up. Although the pizza is properly cooked, the crust is soggy and limp underneath, making for an unappetizing bite. The ingredients are poor (I admit I liked the sausage a bit) and don't provide much depth of flavor. Pizza doesn't have to be top-shelf quality throughout to be a fun, but when it becomes a chore to finish (who wants to chuck a half-eaten pie?) it feels more like a bad investment than a good time. I've previously confessed that I'm not a fan of cheese in general, but the cheese on our pizza was greasy and unappealing enough that it served better as a glue for sparse toppings than as an ingredient. Now here's the funny thing: I've eaten here twice with similar results, and I expect I'll probably go back there again. Unfortunately, there just don't seem to be quality options in the area that match up. You want convenience? Signal Station is will tide you over. If you're looking for good food though, you'll thank yourself for taking a small trip around town to someplace else, like Flying Pie or Dove Vivi.

Very good pizza and fun atmosphere. A nice little N. Portland joint.

Best pizza I've had in Portland since moving here last August--and I've had a lot of pizza. I got two bacon/onion slices and a beer and it hit the spot just right. This place blows Oasis Pizza and Sizzle Pie pizza, both on Burnside, out of the water. I also love that it's about a 5 minute walk from my apartment--that certainly doesn't hurt, and I totally dig the old timey/divey type vibe. Good pizza. Beer. Wine. Ice cream. Awesome. I will definitely be back many times.

Aaaahhhh, family in for the holidays. Nothin' like it. It never fails that the first couple of evenings go easily. Everyone's excited to see each other, and holiday nostalgia rules. But, all good things must (and do) come to an end. By the fourth and fifth nights, personalities inevitably start to revert to back toward childhood (for the record, I was NOT pulling my sister's hair). On the last night of the visit, we all needed to get out of the house, and we thought a jaunt up to St. John's would be a good remedy for our collective cabin fever. Signal Station Pizza looked really promising, so we gave it a whirl. First things first: the folks who dreamed this up deserve kudos for their inspired reuse of an old filling station. This place is an aesthetic gem! From the bell that rings when a car pulls in to the super cool neons, they've really gone all-out on the details. We got a large pie and a couple of beers, and we sat in the main dining area. Things were a bit cramped, and winter seating capacity looks limited to no more than 15-20 people. We got our pizza in about 15 minutes, and it wasn't bad. The crust is the hand-tossed variety, and the toppings were all pretty good quality. The pepperoni was a little greasy, but what the hell... it's pepperoni! This ain't gourmet pizza, and the dining experience was pretty average. That said, this is a local business run by hard working people. Why does that matter? Because if you are in the neighborhood and you go to Pizza Hut, you suck. Give the Signal Station a shot!

Note to self: Next time you are wondering around St. John's with a ten spot burning a hole in your pocket, don't walk into Signal Station Pizza and order a couple of slices and grab a Snapple out of the drink refrigerator. You'll have to put something back and it will make you feel like time when you are 10 and saved up for that cool Daisy BB gun... but didn't budget for the BBs. The pizza slice(s) were good, albeit a bit pricy at like $4.50 a pop. I had some kind of chicken and peppers with a creamy white sauce. Eating in the old gas station was pretty cool, with all the glass making for a nice green house feeling on a cold but sunny Portland winter day. Additional note to self: Quit wondering around St. John's. No good can come from it.

YUM! They've got very tasty pizza and lots of great variety. I can only imagine how glorious it would be to sit at their outdoor seating in the summertime. The re-use of an awesome old time gas station has a fun, retro feel! Minus one star for a being more than I'd like to spend on a pizza.

Cute building with old skool gas station pumps. The girl that works there with the cute gray/purplish blue hair was professional and friendly. Pizza was Prettyy good

I LOVE SIGNAL STATION PIZZA. I moved to St. John's 6 months ago and found the pizza place of my dreams. I'm sorry to say it but, pizza in Portland is pretty awful. Being from back East, I have spent three years in Oregon trying to find some good East coast pizza. Signal station has it. Thin homemade crust, delicious sauce, not too much cheese; pick up a slice, fold it in half, put it in your mouth...and some grease should drip...maybe not healthy...but delicious. And for those of you out there who don't like the grease, use a paper towel. So, I have been going to signal station 2-3 times a month and have always been happy. Last night I called in my order and when I went to pick it up they were having some sort of trouble with their oven. They said that they thought they could fix it and offered me a beer while I waited. About 10 minutes later I was informed that the oven was not going to be fixed anytime soon but, I could take my pizza and bake it at home. So, I ended up with a free beer, half price pizza, and delicious pizza at home. They even kept my pizza on the pizza tray/rack for me and told me to return it when ever I'm in the neighborhood. One would never get that kind of service at Hot lips or Pizzacato. The only thing that I wish they had was Birch beer...it's pretty scarce in the Northwest....and there is nothing better than birch beer and pizza.

I think everyone has covered the "cute/kitschy/etc." architectural gem portion of the review for Signal Station, so I'll refrain but just say "YES." So far I have only ordered a few times, but each time I've had the pizza it's been delicious. The crust is crisp but not too thin, the toppings are fresh and actually taste like it, and the sauce is good stuff. This place makes me wish pizza was a bit more on the healthy side of the spectrum so I could indulge more often, but if you're going to eat it, you might as well go somewhere owned and run locally that uses fresh ingredients and charges reasonable prices. Right? I'll take Signal over Dominos or Pizza Hut any day.

They have great pizza, I love the University Park pizza. The lady that works there, Anna, is so nice and soooo pregnant, I keep thinking she'll be gone the next time I go by, having actually had the baby, she's amazing, always a smile, always on here feet and pregnant as can be.v LOVE the pizza, way better than anything else around.

The pizza is pretty good and you can get it by the slice. It's not my ideal pizza. Something is lacking. I'm not sure what. It does have good flavor though. Maybe the texture is just off somehow. Everyone in there seems really nice. They have ice cream, sandwiches, and salads too. I think it's cool that you can turn any pizza into a calzone.

After spending a lot of time on the East coast, I am one picky SOB when it comes to pizza and cheese-steaks. When Signal Station opened, I called them and interrogated them on the quality of the menu items to make sure it was worth ordering. After all, if I wanted cheap pizza, covered with processed meat product, I could go to Pizza Hut. The owner patiently explained that they spent a lot of time checking out products to ensure that the sausage, cheese, etc was vaguely authentic and of very good quality. (No Sysco dog-food-esqe sausage balls here.) Well, the original owner has moved on, but the new owners have maintained the same quality. I recommend my usual....pesto base (instead of tomato sauce), mushrooms, Italian sausage, and extra Romano cheese. Fantastic. The meatball sandwich is great, as is the Italian. The meatballs actually seem somewhat close to home made. I do not recommend purchasing one slice, as there is no telling how long a pizza has sat around. Also, the ice cream in the case looks like its been sitting there for a long time. How about some flavors that actually move.

I just moved to St. johns proper but have lived in North portland for over 3 years. I really wish Hot Lips would buy out this business so we could have awesome pizza in the neighborhood. Have given Signal many chances cause i really wanted to like their pizza. Service was always friendly. The pizza though was always covered with a thick layer of grease. And crust could not hold up against all that wetness. Even a simple cheese pizza was inedible. Sorry Signal but St. Johns deserves better.

I don't know if it's the best pizza I've ever had, but it is by far the best pizza I've had by the slice. You can stop by whenever it's convenient and in short order obtain a reasonable portion of the daily carnivore, vegetarian or cheese pies. In my mind that places Signal Station ahead of the scores of other artisan-yet-unapproachable pizza joints littered about this area.

I love Signal Station pizza! The crust is crispy and delicious, the sauce is obviously made in house and the people are always great. I also got the free coupon when I first moved to St. John's and I've returned many times. I wish they would deliver though. There are several pizza places around this area that deliver and they don't hold a candle to Signal Station.

This place has the best design aesthetic in St Johns. I love how they preserved the integrity of the cool 50s gas station without cheapening it with a cliche 50's Americana theme. Excellent for lunch or dinner. Very comfortable atmosphere. The employees are nice and helpful. I'm not a big pizza fan, but it is good. The sandwiches are excellent!

I like the pizza here but sadly they stole from me. I signed a debit card receipt for $16.15 for a takeout order (Tuesday 10/23 around 6:15pm) and it show up on my account this morning as $20.00. If you're going to help yourself to a tip (which I don't leave on takeout orders) at least make it reasonable, not 24% on a takeout pie. I guess the lesson is to pay cash or pay twice at Signal Station.

Ordered 2 meatball subs to go (hubby also tried a slice of pizza) - and really enjoyed my meal. Sure, it's not like the meatballs can compare to your little Italian grandma or anything - but they were decent, not to dry and were really good with the bread and cheese on the sub. The pizza was also pretty good - not too greasy, with fresh ingredients for toppers. I would have given this place 4 stars based solely on the food, but the service was pretty lackluster. Not only did the 2 people working NOT acknowledge our entrance into the establishment, it took a good 5 minutes to get them to face the front and do ANYTHING. They were nice enough once they stopped talking to each other and paying attention to us, but the interaction still left a bad feeling. We were the only customers in there and it took so long to just pickup and pay for the food...weird. I'll definitely go back and try again, perhaps it was just a bad day. Nevertheless, the venue is pretty cool looking and if you are in St. Johns, this is a great place to stop for food.

I was worried when I moved here I would never find a pizza place to compare to mine back in philly. but what do you know, the first place I tried, that happens to be in my neighborhood, and in an old gas station- was AMAZING. love love love. They don't deliver anymore, but luckily it's in walking distance to my house. I've had the veggie and plain cheese. dellllllllllicious.

I come to signal station a few times a month, and every time I'm here, everything tastes amazing. I was attracted at first by the building, and was willing to try the pizza, though I had my doubts (pizza from an old gas station??). Wow, I'm glad I tried it, because now I'm addicted. My favorite is The Cathedral. The variations on their pizza are amazing, with interesting combinations that I wouldn't have thought of before. The service is prompt and courteous, and since I usually order the same thing (though it varies), the staff there dubs me as a regular, and knows my order from the get go. The slices are decent, but I would go out of the way to order a whole pie. Love, love, love this place!!

As a former patroleum distribution engineer, I really appreciate the setting of this cozy little pizza place. It has an indoor/ outdoor setting, full with the gas pumps still remaining outside. The girl working there was quite friendly. The pizza was pretty good, I'd say about Schmitza level, though not as flashy as Hot Lips. The setting is chill, the pizza is decent and they have some good beer on tap. I believe that I saw pilsner urquell, but I could be mistaken. Overall its definitely a cool place to go if your in the St Johns area. The first gas station that is both aesthetically pleasing and free of brain-damaging oders.

This is a great spot to go for a slice in the center of St. Johns. This isn't the cheapest pizza you'll find, but you also get what you pay for -- good quality hand-tossed pizza with good ingredients. I tend to go for the tried-n-true cheese and/or pepperoni, but they also have more adventurous fare (both vegetarian and meat options). The service is friendly and never off-putting, which in Portland can be hard to come by. The interior is definitely cool and inspired, although it does not lend itself to groups larger than 4. St. Johns residents would do well to support Signal Station, an asset to the neighborhood. (btw, I selected "Moderate" for price because if you are indeed really hungry, it's going to probably set you back more than a tenner)

So the pizza isn't the very best in the world but they do have unique combos of toppings that make it special! I have always found everything to be fresh and a good value. We ordered a salad last time and found that too was delish! The pizza has a not too thin crust which is nice and really love going to the 'shop' in the summer when you can sit on the corner and watch all the shenanigans that is st. johns. Also they have blue bell ice cream! Yum!

Pizza is ok here and I like places that do slices but the customer service is often lacking a bit. Several times I have just stood there to the point of feeling uncomfortable while staff finishes conversations or decides they feel like talking to me. Lots of new places in N Portland but to me service is what keeps me coming back to places and here not so much sad to say.

In my book, the fact that this place is in a converted gas station makes it cool. The pizza was really good. The crust is on the thin side and really crispy. They have a variety of sauce bases and unusual ingredients. We got the Cathedral pizza which I highly recommend. We got it to go, but they do have a few tables to eat at. The old garage doors roll up, and they have open air seating. The people running the place were really nice, and you just can't beat the cute building.

Pizza is good, but the atmosphere is great! Decent selection of beers and fabulous service! Good for groups of 4 or less (not a whole lot of space to sit). Surprisingly kid friendly.

I love this pizza. Every pie we have gotten has been super tasty and the crust is to die for. We tend to do take away and it is still hot and fresh when we get it home. The ingredients always taste fresh and the staff has always been wonderfully friendly. Is one of our neighborhood favorites for sure!

Would only give it 3 stars (pizza is just OK) but they have decent beer on tap, cute outdoor and indoor seating, and gorgeous design sensibilities (and neon).
